Stay Dry and Stylish: The Best Waterproof Dog Coats for Fashion-Forward Pups
Does your furry fashionista hate getting wet? Don't let the rain dampen your pup's style! Introducing the best waterproof dog coats that will keep your four-legged friend dry and looking fabulous. Dog coats aren't just about fashion - they're also highly functional, providing ultimate protection against the elements. With innovative materials and expert craftsmanship, our selection of waterproof dog coats ensures that your pup stays cosy and dry, no matter the weather. Whether you're strolling through the city streets or exploring the great outdoors, these stylish and practical coats are a must-have for any fashion-forward pup. So, say goodbye to soggy fur and hello to the perfect blend of fashion and functionality with the best waterproof dog coats on the market.
Why do dogs need waterproof coats?
Dogs, just like humans, can be affected by rain and wet weather. While some dogs have naturally water-resistant fur, others may not be as lucky. Additionally, certain breeds are more prone to getting wet and cold, which can lead to discomfort and even health issues. That's where waterproof dog coats come in. These coats provide an extra layer of protection against rain, wind, and moisture, keeping your furry friend dry and comfortable. Not only do they help to prevent your dog from getting wet, but they also help to retain body heat, ensuring that your pup stays warm even in wet conditions. Whether you have a small or large dog, a waterproof coat is a practical and stylish solution to keep them dry and cosy.
When it comes to choosing a waterproof dog coat, there are a few key factors to consider. The size and breed of your dog, the climate you live in, and the activities you and your pup enjoy are all important considerations. Additionally, the quality of the coat, including the materials used and the overall design, will play a role in its effectiveness. By understanding these factors and taking them into account, you can ensure that you find the perfect waterproof coat for your furry friend.
Benefits of waterproof dog coats
Investing in a high-quality waterproof dog coat offers numerous benefits for both you and your pup. Firstly, these coats provide protection against rain, snow, and wet conditions, keeping your dog dry and comfortable. This is especially important for dogs with short hair or those that are more prone to getting wet and cold. By keeping your dog dry, you can help to prevent discomfort, potential health issues, and the need for frequent baths.
Secondly, waterproof dog coats can help to regulate your dog's body temperature. They act as a barrier against the cold and wind, helping to retain body heat and keep your pup warm. This is particularly beneficial in colder climates or during the winter months when dogs are more susceptible to the cold. By providing insulation and warmth, waterproof coats allow your dog to enjoy outdoor activities without feeling chilly or uncomfortable.
Another advantage of waterproof dog coats is their durability and long-lasting nature. High-quality coats are designed to withstand wear and tear, making them a practical investment. They are often made from durable materials that are resistant to water and other elements, ensuring that they remain functional and stylish for years to come. Additionally, many waterproof dog coats are easy to clean and maintain, making them a convenient choice for busy pet owners.
Factors to consider when choosing a waterproof dog coat
When selecting a waterproof coat for your dog, there are several factors to consider to ensure the perfect fit and functionality. The following factors will help you make an informed decision:
Size and breed: Different dog breeds come in various shapes and sizes, so it's crucial to choose a coat that fits your dog properly. Measure your dog's length, chest girth, and neck girth to find the right size. Consider the breed's characteristics, such as long or short hair, to determine the coat's length and coverage needed.
Climate and weather conditions: The climate you live in plays a significant role in choosing the right waterproof coat for your dog. If you live in an area with frequent rainfall, opt for a coat with a higher level of water resistance. For colder climates, look for coats with added insulation to keep your dog warm.
Activity level: Consider your dog's activity level and the types of activities you engage in together. If you enjoy hiking or outdoor adventures, choose a coat that offers more coverage and protection. For less active dogs or those primarily going on short walks, a lighter and more breathable coat may be sufficient.
Material and construction: The quality of the materials used and the overall construction of the coat are essential for durability and functionality. Look for coats made from waterproof and breathable materials, such as nylon or polyester. Pay attention to features like reinforced stitching, adjustable closures, and reflective strips for added safety.
Comfort and mobility: A waterproof dog coat should not restrict your dog's movement or cause discomfort. Ensure that the coat allows for freedom of movement and doesn't rub or chafe against your dog's skin. Adjustable straps and closures can help achieve a comfortable and secure fit.
By considering these factors, you can narrow down your options and find the perfect waterproof coat for your furry friend.

How important is the dog coat?
A dog coat is an item of clothing that keeps your puppy warmer. Dog jackets are normally worn by dogs who reside in cold climates, particularly individuals with thick fur. This sort of garment is fairly proficient at maintaining a cushty body temperature.Dog coat will come in many different styles, but they all belong to 1 of 2 groups. Short-haired dog jackets and long-haired dog coats are examples.In the wintertime, it keeps your pet dog warm, and in summer time, it keeps your pet dog cool. It can resist such things as dust and dampness while simultaneously attracting such things as humans and other canines (as it transfers chemicals from skin to the air). The dog coat may also be a great predictor of its general health.
Tumblr media
A dog coat aims to keep your pet warm and dry. A top-quality woolen garment should provide enough protection from the current weather, along with long-term warmth and comfort for your dog. Dog jackets are ideal for dogs who spend a lot of time outside. They can provide practical wind and rain protection, retaining your dog's fur dryer than they're walking on naked. Coats for dogs come in a variety of styles, including jackets and sweaters. Some jackets include hoods to keep the rain and cold off your dog's face. Sweaters are longer cloth pieces that go during your dog's head, letting their front paws free.

Dog coats are employed not merely by dogs, but in addition by humans who would like to keep their canines warm in cold weather. Dog coats are commonly used because they're composed of materials that assist maintain heat, such as for example fleece. Things to Do on Ice
I adjusted the heat shawl against my neck, tugging my collar over it to keep out the chill breeze. Heatseekers sure knew what they were doing when it came to warming devices. A regular scarf had nothing on this. It was almost enough to let me forget the snowy temperatures on this alien planet.
Not that I could fully forget, with the snow drifting down into the streets anywhere there wasn't a storefront with a heat-field umbrella. The city-goers were from a range of species, and anyone who didn't have heavy fur was bundled up against the cold in some way.
Even Zhee, who objected to coats on the grounds that they covered up his glorious purple exoskeleton, was sporting a range of scarves and bracelets that radiated heat. It seemed like an inefficient way to keep warm to me, but that was his business.
Speaking of business, there were hours left before our ship was due to leave, and everyone was taking the chance to see the sights. Zhee and I had volunteered to scout out the tourism hub. Several others would be joining us shortly.
“Is that the sports arena?” I asked when a wide building loomed ahead.
“Yes.” Zhee pointed out a sign with his pincher arm. I'd missed it because of all the burly, yeti-like locals milling around in front of it. “One building, many sports, all open to anyone.”
I was more than a little curious to see what sort of sports were played here. “Let's take a look! Paint and Eggskin will probably come here first anyway; it's bound to be warmer in there.”
“A valid point,” Zhee agreed, stepping quickly. His clicky bug feet had the most adorable little booties on, for all the world like something a toddler would wear to keep from slipping on the kitchen floor. The sparkly thread woven through the rim probably meant they were high fashion where Mesmers were concerned. I hoped they were waterproof.
I tromped through the slush in my normal human boots, and soon enough we entered the arena doorway to a much more comfortable temperature. I found the control tab for the heat shawl and turned it off, though I left it draped under my shirt.
Zhee deactivated several bracelets. “A respectable range of sports,” he observed.
I scanned the signs. “I don’t recognize the names of any of these.”
“The viewing areas are this way, Zhee said, padding off down the main hallway. “Perhaps you will recognize one if you see it in action.”
Surprisingly enough, I did.
“Is that hockey?” I asked a moment later, staring through the big window at the ice rink where two mixed teams of local yetis and offworld Smashers careened around in chase of something small. The full-body thumps vibrated through the floor.
“They’re calling it ‘puck chase,’ Zhee said, reading a sign.
“That’s amazing. We have this exact sport where I’m from.” I looked for differences. The puck looked bigger and heavier, and the sticks were a different shape. Judging by the amount of violence going on, the rules were probably different too. But it was very much the same on the surface, with goalies in front of nets and everything. “I suppose it’s an obvious sort of game to think up when there’s a lot of ice around, but still. I know a few people who would have loved to see this.”
Zhee sniffed. “It’s a bit pedestrian.”
“I suppose,” I said with a smile. “Not your style?”
“I’ve never been one for the more feminine sports,” Zhee said with a flick of his antennae.
“Feminine?” I asked.
He pointed with a pincher arm, keeping it carefully folded. “All this ‘protect the nest; steal the enemy’s egg’ nonsense.”
I blinked. “I guess that’s one way to think of it.”
“Judging by that sign though, there promises to be something more masculine down this way,” Zhee said. He headed off down the hallway.
I hurried to follow. The sign in question had another name I didn’t recognize, though I could guess. I dodged around a trio of yetis — which smelled like cinnamon and herbal tea, with none of the wet-dog scent I’d been subconsciously expecting. I reminded myself not to make unflattering assumptions, and caught up with Zhee just as he turned the corner.
“There we are!” he said in satisfaction. “Now that’s a sport. Even Trrili would have to appreciate this one.”
Figure skating. Aliens of a variety of body types and clothing styles glided around on the ice, leaping and spinning and generally being as flashy as they could. Somebody with wings was even doing a high-speed series of flips that were almost certainly a mating dance. Every skater moved past the others with elegance and grace, a far cry from the violence in the other room.
“I’ll be here for a while,” said Zhee’s voice, already farther away.
I turned to see him gliding toward the entrance to the arena, reactivating his heat bracelets and pulling a currency card from a belt pouch. A vending machine just inside the door looked like it sold force-field ice skates to fit any foot.
“All right, I’ll keep an eye out for the others,” I called after him, though I doubt he was listening. He disappeared through the door in a gust of cold air.
I looked around at the passersby, some of whom were watching the action with recording devices. I quietly got out my phone. I had a suspicion that seeing a praying-mantis-shaped alien strut his stuff in the manly art of ice dancing was about to be very memorable.
I was right.
~~~
Shamelessly inspired by this post.
These are the ongoing backstory adventures of the main character from this book. More to come! And I am currently drafting a sequel!
what does the grooming process look like for stellina and kep?
my 'process" for grooming is very much what i would call 'poor man's dog training':
get a silicone lick-mat
apply peanut butter very generously
slap that bad boy onto the front of the fridge/kitchen appliances at dog eye-level
groom while they're distracted
i start this process day 1 as puppies and continue it through their whole lives. should i actually be putting in the effort to actually train them to stand still and quietly for grooming without the need for food distraction? yes. do i? no i'm lazy.
or if you're asking about like, what grooming i'm actually doing:
hair: i do an all-over brush at least once a week (should do twice but again, lazy and not needed). takes like 20-30 mins. my 'schedule' for brushing is basically this:
Tumblr media
red areas (behind ears, arm/legpits) are high-friction and very prone to matting. these you have to brush out at least once a week, no exceptions, or you will get mats. this is also very sensitive skin so it's good to desensitize them to brushing as much as you can.
yellow areas should be brushed at least once weekly to comb out any tangles and debris, but are less prone to matting.
and then the rest of them i'll brush through but that's about it, that part pretty much never tangles.
i normally just use a pin brush and slicker brush, and a metal comb for the yellow/red areas. sometimes an undercoat rake if they're very sheddy.
collies are 'dry' dogs - they don't really drool, and they don't have the oily waterproof coat that breeds like a lab or hound does, so they're naturally low-odor without much of a 'doggy' smell. i'll bathe every 4-8 weeks depending on what the weather's like and if their skin seems like it's getting cruddy. 2-3 times a year i'll take them to a groomer to have them do a 'deshed' treatment where they really blow out the undercoat, because this makes a huge difference in keeping them comfortable in the heat, and in how much hair i have to vacuum.
for stellina i've also been getting an outline trim (shortening up the yellow areas on the pic with long feathering) in spring and fall, it just keeps things cleaner and it makes a huge difference in the amount of time i have to spend brushing.
feet: i dremel nails every week, same PB-mat method as with brushing. every week is probably overkill but i think it's good desensitization and also i hate long nails on dogs so i'm a bit anal about it. collies tend to get long hair on the feet/between the pads, some people like the 'grinch feet' look but personally i fucking hate it so every 4-6 weeks i just take round-tip scissors and clean them up.
other: the rest i do as needed, e.g. if i see any wax/debris in the ears i'll do a clean with OTC ear cleaner and a cotton ball. one of stellina's eyes tends to be teary, so about once a week i take a warm washcloth and wipe them down to prevent tear stains. and then i vacuum my house weekly, sometimes every 2 weeks if it's not too bad.
honestly i'm writing a lot but what i've listed here is way less than 1 hour a week on average, collies IMO are not particularly high-grooming needs dogs (compared to, say, a doodle or OES that needs daily brushing and regular professional grooming). i find the grooming and hair totally manageable. i honestly prefer dealing with long hair because it tends to clump together on the ground, rather than short hairs that fly and scatter into everything. people tend to see roughs and go 'oh no way too much hair' but like, it is super manageable as long as you've got half an hour at some point each week to brush your dog. i'm very obsessive about my pets being 'neat' and i do fine.
sorry for the incredibly overly-long answer to your very simple ask lmao
Modern farmers and landowners, however, are prejudiced against scrub because it is considered unproductive. As a result it has been almost entirely eradicated from Britain. Scrubland is almost ubiquitously described as wasteland. It was not always so. In medieval times, scrub species were highly valued, and scrub was anything but a dirty name. The iron-rod stems of blackthorn were used for walking sticks and its fruit – sloes – for medicines and flavouring wine and gin. Brambles, like elder, produce edible berries that were also useful for dyes. Hawthorn makes good walking sticks, as well as tool handles, and was used for stock-proofing, and produces hawberries for preserves and sauces. Hazel was for hurdles, thatching spars, basketry, furniture and charcoal; willow for charcoal-making and basketry, cricket bats and medicine. Charcoal from alder and dogwood made gunpowder. Broom, of course, made excellent brooms. Juniper was for smoking meats and making pencils, its berries for distilling oil, and flavouring game and gin. Spindle was for skewers, toothpicks and baskets. Wych elm made bows, furniture and threshing floors. Birch provided cotton reels and bobbins, firewood, brooms and roofing thatch; its bark was for waterproofing and tanning. Birch wine, fermented from sap, was used as medicine and young birch leaves were a diuretic. From the dog rose came rosehips – which we now know are exceptionally high in vitamin C – for syrups, sauces and jellies. Gorse – known as ‘furze’ in Sussex – was fodder for animals and fuel for kilns and ovens. A buffer of thorny scrub was often encouraged around woodland to prevent the ingress of grazing animals. Place names like Thorndon, Thornden, Thornbury, Haslemere, Hazeldon, Spindleton, Hathern (hawthorn), Hatherdene, Brambleton, Barnham Broom, Broomhill, Broompark, pepper the map of Britain. Our own field names at Knepp recall the days when scrub was an asset – Benton’s Gorse, Broomers Corner, Broom Field, High Reeds, Cooper Reeds, Faggot Stack Plat, Bramble Field, Rushett’s, Rushall Field, Little Thornhill, Great Thornhill, Stub Mead, Barcover Furzefield, Swallows Furzefield, Coates’ Furzefield, Greenstreet Furzefield, Constable’s Furze, Pollardshill Furze, Old Furze Field, Furzefield Plat, Great Furzefield and lots of Little Furzefields.
Hello! I'm moving to the north of France in a few months and my property has ample space and a barn, so I am considering getting a donkey. Is there anything that you didn't know before buying donkeys or any big obstacles you faced that you didn't expect, even after doing your research? I know you have talked about how finding veterinarians that really care about your donkeys is hard. Is there anything else a potential owner should know?
That's really exciting news! The only donkey-specific advice I can think of is stuff you've probably already encountered if you started doing research, like make sure you find a farrier who is familiar with donkeys, as their hooves are different from horse hooves and should be trimmed differently. And make sure your donkey has a shelter—the llamas hardly ever use the shelter I've built but Pirlouit often spends entire days in there if it's raining. I've read somewhere that unlike horses who have waterproof coats to some extent, donkeys who have evolved as desert animals just get soaked to the bone. But other than that they're quite hardy and can live outside year-round, no need for blankets or anything.
Also a donkey really needs a friend. When I sent the llamas away for a few weeks Pirlouit was miserable and brayed constantly, even though I live right next to his pasture and he sees me every day. A fellow herbivore is probably best for company—I’ve seen chickens amongst the species recommended online but Pirou barely seems to notice my chickens’ existence, I don’t think they’re closely related enough to have any interest in one another. I've also read that donkeys can be hostile to dogs and that's not been my experience, if anything Pirlouit shows saintly patience with Pandolf ! But he's known him since puppyhood and Pan basically lives in the pasture most days, which probably helps.
The biggest ongoing Pirlouit challenge I face concerns his weight, donkeys are really prone to obesity. So unless you get an elderly donkey, make sure you don't feed him the richest type of hay in winter (and give it in small quantities at a time). I recommend using a hay net with small holes so he'll eat more slowly. I've thought of getting a hay ball for Pirlouit, but his pasture is so slopey, the ball would probably end up rolling away at unfair speeds and make him feel persecuted. He's dignified, I don't know if he'd enjoy having to run after his food like some common carnivore.
Other than that donkeys are pretty low-maintenance animals in my experience. My recurring expenses for Pirlouit (other than hay, but he doesn’t need much of it compared to a horse) are a hoof trimming three times a year, a deworming twice a year and a new salt lick every so often, and that's about it. Donkey ownership is only time-consuming in the spring when I have to figure out how to keep him from overeating. Limiting his grazing area by penning him works okay (he just gets a bit lonely)—it helps that he is respectful of fences including very lightweight ones. Which immediately places an animal in the low-maintenance category for me!
Unlike humans, ghouls are covered from head to toe in a layer of fur. Fur texture will vary from ghoul to ghoul depending on genetics and type, but pretty much every ghoul has at least a fine layer of fur.
They also go through shedding seasons just like dogs and cats do, which leads to very grouchy, itchy ghouls during spring and autumn and the abbey being coated in a layer of ghoul fur.
Earth and Quintessence ghouls tend to have the thickest coat and often have a double coat to help provide extra insulation. They normally have the worst time with shedding due to their coats and sometimes can even get matted if they do not pay enough attention to their coat. Some ghouls choose to just get clipped to a shorter length but this can affect coat texture long term.
Air ghouls also have double coats to help them survive in the cold mountaintops they tend to live in. Their coats are short and dense but they still shed ridiculous amounts during the shedding season. Air ghouls can also have feathers instead of fur, in which they don't undergo a shedding season but instead moult all their feathers once a year. Moulting air ghouls are even more miserable than shedding ghouls. They are often very tired and miserable with all the energy being put into regrowing their feathers and will feel colder than usual during this time.
Fire ghouls usually only have a short coat of fine hair that is hardly noticeable unless you're looking directly for it. they have very little issue with shedding due to having such light coats, and sometimes fire ghouls don't even have a generalised period of greater shedding and will instead just gradually shed over the year. They also usually have areas that are more sparsely covered with fur to help them avoid overheating.
Water ghouls often have frizzy coats with densely packed guard hairs that help provide thermal insulation while swimming and provide natural waterproofing. These guard hairs stick together when the ghoul is underwater to wick water away from the ghoul's skin and keep it dry. water ghouls only moult once a year. The moult usually starts around the ghoul's face and will reveal a darker-coloured coat as the old hair sheds out. During this time most water ghouls will remain on land to help conserve the energy they need to moult. They will often become irritable and in the pit, Water ghouls will often lose great amounts of weight due to not hunting during their moult.
Multi ghouls will always have great variability in their coat type and texture due to their mixed heritage so it is hard to predict what coat type a multi ghoul will be. They can often have a harder time moulting due to not having the 'proper' coat type and can be more prone to matting and coat impaction.
Campus Romance
Pairing: Art Teacher!Sex Demon x Writer!Gender Neutral!Reader
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1786 words
Summary: You stumble into an art lecture while around your new college campus. Luckily, the hot professor doesn’t seem to mind
Request: UH BELZ HELLOOO???? You can’t give this gay anon a He/They art professor sex demon and not expect them to request a fic??
Anyways- can I humbly request a meet cute fic of Belz with a reader (GN or Male either or) who’s a writer? Maybe they meet on the college campus Belz works at or they meet over the phone cause of Belz’s night job, whatever floats your boat I just want flirty demon pls (/lh)
A/N: For those who haven’t read it, heres the piece where I introduced Belz!
What a perfect first day. No rain coat, no umbrella, an open campus and a downpour of rain. You hold your (hopefully) waterproof binder over your head as you race across a crosswalk, just avoiding getting splashed by a campus gardener.
This is what I get for waking up early. This is a sign from god.
You had meant to peruse around the college today, taking a note of the building you’d soon be teaching out of and the general layout. But the rain has turned everything into a blurry mess and you end up ducking into the nearby arts building. Your future office is technically only one over, but you’d rather not spend that extra 5 minutes and have your jeans get soaked through.
After shaking off like a dog, you begin wandering down the halls trying to find a bathroom, at least to see how much of a mess you must look like. The building is heated, thank gods, but only few of the classrooms are occupied. You’d guess most people decided to ditch or cancel their 8 AMS after seeing the weather outside.
You’re shrugging off your damp sweater when you see a propped open door, a vivacious voice and the sweet smell of incense luring you in. At first you intend only to peek, maybe ask where the nearest restroom is, but what you had expected to be a dull lecture room ended being much more interesting.
Numerous paint cases and student exhibitions line the wall, the tables well loved with paint splatter and pencil scratches. In the center of the room is a giant marble statue of a man in a rather artful pose, surrounded by multiple students and their easels. They all sit hunched over, charcoal smudged on their fingers as they sketch the form in front of them. But what really catches your eye is the lecturer, standing right next to the subject.
“Now, I want you pay special attention to the movement lines of this piece.” They say, running their fingers down the statues upturned arm. Long, black nails trail down the side of the figure, tracing the defined side and the hip bones. “Notice the flow of the Contrapposto stance, how it positions his limbs around the slight twist in his torso. If you want to come and see up close, you may.” The lecturer smirks, “Starting next week we’ll have live models, so this will be the only subject you can get flirty with.” The lecturer slaps the statue’s butt, a general murmur of laughter coming from the students.
The lecturer steps off the stand and brushes back their shaggy hair. Their billowy shirt exposes a lean clavicle and several necklaces. Their blue skin is complimented by the dark red of their boho pants, only adding to their relaxed air. Their gaze wanders around the classroom, observing their students before landing on you, the wet stranger lurking in the corner. You give a wave, hoping it doesn’t look too awkward.
Their eyes go wide at your soaking wet form, briskly walking over. You’re able to catch the small name tag pinned in their shirt.
Belz (He/They)
“Howdy.” They mock salute, eyes wandering down your wet clothes. “My goodness, you’re drenched! Here-” They reach over, grabbing a smock from a nearby hanger, “It’s not much but hopefully it should warm you up some.” Before you can protest they’ve thrown it across your chest, ducking behind you and grabbing onto the laces. You feel the faint brush of their claws as Belz quickly ties up the back, cinching it tight to your waist with a few precise movements. The fabric itself may not be particularly cozy, but you feel a warmth covering your body nonetheless.
“There,” Belz mutters, rubbing some imaginary dust off your shoulder. “And look at that, it fits perfectly.” He mutters, his chuckle at his own little joke just as inviting as the classroom itself. “Now, what can I do for you, stranger?”
“Oh, nothing! I actually was just escaping from the rain when I saw the door open. I guess I just got…drawn in?” You straighten out the front of the smock, realizing now how random this encounter is. “Just thought I’d observe. I hope I’m not intruding.”
“It’s no problem at all, my lessons are for all, as is art itself.” Belz brushes a stray hair back before sticking out their hand. “I’m Belz.”
“____.” You shake their hand, “I-I’m actually a new literature professor, I was supposed to be touring the campus today, but, well….” You gesture outside, an ironic crack of thunder echoing as you do. But Belz isn’t dissuaded by the storm, a big smirk coming across their lips.
“Well, I’m happy to be your welcoming party, Professor ____.” Belz wraps their other palm around the outside of your fist, enfolding your hand in theirs. Their warm palms feel refreshing against your icy skin. “Now, do you like muffins?”
“Oh, yeah, I guess so-”
“Perfect!” Belz keeps your hand in his as he leads you to his desk, a big tray of different muffins sitting right by his laptop.“My mom always said the cure to bad weather is good food, so you may have the pick of the lot. Though my students have probably pilfered the best ones. Can’t let your mind work on an empty stomach, after all.”
Belz sits down in their chair, giving it a little spin before grabbing a chocolate muffin from the basket.
“Thank you! These look delicious.” You grab a banana-nut muffin, shocked by how warm it still was, like it just came out of the pan.
“I get them every morning from that bakery right near campus. It’s to die for, you have to check it out.” Belz takes a big chomp out of their muffin, immediately swooning at the flavor. Their noises are almost..erotic.
You take a bite of your muffin, trying not to think about that. But Belz is right, these muffins are delicious, you can almost forget about your waterlogged jeans.
“So, you’re a banana nut fan, huh? Underrated flavor in my opinion.”
“Agreed. But I think my favorite is blueberry.”
“Hmm, good to know.” Belz laughs, tapping their cheek as their eyes elevator up and down. You take another bite of your muffin, hoping he can’t see your cheeks flush. Instead you look around their desk, multiple knick-knacks and smaller art pieces scattered all around. Right near their laptop is a framed picture, one of those cheesy ones with a photoshop caption from the early 2000’s, of two rats. The caption reads “Benny and Jet <3”
“Are those your pet rats?”
Belz gasps, excitedly nodsing before holding the photo proudly up to his face.
“Yes, these are my babies, the loves of my life, my platonic soulmates. I would’ve brought them to class today, if not for the weather.”
“They’re really cute.” You point towards Benny, who is almost all white except for the brown spot on his hind. “I had a rat that looked like Benny when I was a kid. She was an absolute sweetheart, though my friend would freak out whenever they saw her.”
Belz tuts, “I don’t trust people who disrespect rats. It’s my ultimate judge of character.”
“Well, one of those friends did throw a pudding cup at me a year later, so I’d say it’s pretty accurate.”
You both laugh, Belz throwing his head back. He’s got a pleasant laugh, resonant like a bass guitar. His countenance is infectiously friendly and when he smiles your way, you can't help but feel a little more giddy.
“Well, good to know you have great taste in food and in pets, Professor. Hopefully that good taste rings true elsewhere, hmm?” Belz leans on their palm, giving you another wink.
You find yourself stuttering, rubbing the back of your head as you try to come up with a funny retort, but then-
“Professor? Could I ask for some advice on something?”
Belz stands up with a flourish, their billowing clothes making the motion seem extra elegant. “Well, it seems my people need me.”
“Of course, I’ll let you get back to work.”
Belz places a hand on your shoulder, that flirtatious smile making the contact feel even more electrifying. “Feel free to stay as long as you like, I have a kettle if you’d like some tea to warm you up.”
“Thanks again, but I probably should go and find my office. Be brave and face the rain.”
Belz smile widens, their eyes wandering down before locking you in with a sultry gaze. “Well, feel free to holler if you need anything. And you can stop by my class anytime.”
Belz begins ti walk away, but keeps their hand lingering on your shoulder. Their fingers glide across the back of your shirt, only loosing contact only when they’ve walked too far away.
Goosebumps rise to your skin, and you know it’s not from the wet clothes.
“Who knows, maybe you could be the model next time.” With another sultry wink, they walk away and to their student, immediately shifting into teacher mode as they look over the sketch.
You scurry out the door with a weak goodbye, hoping the cold rain will help your burning blush.
—-
Its your first official day of teaching and you're leaving the lecture hall with a pep in your step. Your students are much more engaged than you thought they would be for a morning class and you have a nice hour break before office hours. A warm lunch waits for you in your mini fridge, though you’re slightly regretting not grabbing those cookies you had back home; You were really craving some sweets.
You’re fiddling with the keys to your office door when you notice a small bag sitting right outside. It might have been mistaken for garbage, if not for the sticky note with your name and a heart stuck to the outside. You pick it up, nudging open the door with your hip as you walk inside, opening the bag with two fingers.
The first thing you see is paper wrapping, the thin kind all bakeries use, and then you the sweetest, most delectable looking blueberry muffin. It’s still warm to the touch, with a tasteful amount of sugar crystals on the top.
You place the muffin down on your desk, noticing the note underneath it. You unfold and read it as you sit down in your office chair.
You’re favorite, hope you’re having a great first day <3
-Belz
The smile that creeps up on you is a giddy one, quickly tesring open ghe muffin and taking a large bit.
Damn, this is delicious.
A Story of Another Us- Chapter Two
Tumblr media
Summary- Dahlia was no longer in the business of hurting her own feelings but when spending break from University on her best friends family ranch she finds more than just some veterinary experience.
Warnings- Swearing
The leather black suitcase hit the wet pebbled floor with a thud, Dahlia was just thankful that she hadn’t pulled the rest of the boot’s contents out with it. The rain had stopped while she had a short few hours sleep, it was still too cold for the thin gym leggings she had adorned on her journey. It took all her strength to try and pick up the suitcase with both hands, she just about managed to get it a few centimeters off the floor but it was enough for her to get it to the doors that led into the kitchen.
‘Oh here’ Haelena’s nephew Jace jumped out of his seat to help her.
Dahlia was not the only house guest they were having this break, Haelena had mentioned that she had a half sister from her father, she had moved off the farm and bought her own land just after Viserys’ passing. It was her sister’s two eldest boys that were joining her in vacationing with the Targaryen family, Jace and Luke were roughly the same age as Helaena and her siblings if not a few years younger, as were their girlfriends Baela and Rhaena who had joined them on their visit.
‘Thanks’ Dahlia breathed, letting Jace take the case from her and watched him struggle with it a little.
‘Right go and put some warmer clothes on and then I’ll take you on a little tour!’ Haelena grinned giddily.
‘We could look for the dog too if you wanted’ Dahlia suggested as she opened her case searched through it for her fur lined leggings.
‘Maybe yeah, I think Aemond had already searched the farm, here you’re size five right?’ Haelena queried as she handed her a pair of dark green wellington boots.
Dahlia took the shoes and slid them on her feet after she had slipped the thick leggings over the gym leggings she had on. She also pulled her thick waterproof coat out of the case and threw it on. She followed Haelena out into the cold morning air, shoving her hands into her pockets to keep them warm.
‘These are the chickens, that’s the stables and the training yard, we have three palfreys and two Stallions at the moment. Aemond mainly cares for the horses but I’m sure he’d be happy to let you help and show you the ropes’ Haelena started to inform her as the two girls began down the small slope that led to the large section of land that lay behind the house.
‘These are the small trough beds we use for our crops; we can’t grow a lot but what we can grow saves us tons on shopping, these are mainly for like small fruits, cabbages and stuff, the greenhouse is for bigger things like artichokes and pumpkins and stuff’
‘I had no idea you guys were so self-sufficient, this is so cool Hel!... what’s that building?’ Dahlia asked referring to the old run-down building that sat at the very bottom of the garden.
‘Oh that was a cottage my sister used to live in, it’s been empty for a long time now but mum keeps speaking about having it renovated, come on… I think she’s planning on letting one of us move into it when we get a partner or something but for now it’s just full of old equipment’ She informed her best friend while she led her down the length of the land and through a small arch way in the tall thick hedges.
Dahlia made sure to shut the gate securely behind her before continuing over the grassy land and onto another dirt track. Haelena went on telling her about how many fields that had and what animals resided in them. They had cows, Heifers and Bulls both. They had Ewes, Rams and were hoping to start lambing for the first-time next season. Dahlia could have listened to her talk about the farm and the animals all day, she loved how Haelena’s face lit up when she could show off her vast knowledge of the farming life.
‘Oh there’s mum come and say hi’ The silver haired girl pointed across the country road to where a brunette stood on the other side of the field, two tall figures with matching shiny locks as that of her best friend.
They both plodded through the wet mud and through the fence that led onto more wet mud and grass. As they approached the group Dahlia caught the pale purple eyes of Haelena’s younger brother, his gaze burnt into her like fire in a way she didn’t much enjoy.
‘Hi, mum this is my friend Dahlia that I told you about, Dahl this is my mum’
‘It’s a pleasure to meet you Mrs Hightower’ Dahlia smiled, shaking the extended hand of the stunningly beautiful young woman.
‘And you sweetie, Haelena has spoken so highly of you, have you met my sons? My eldest Aegon and one of Haelena’s other brothers Aemond’ she introduced her to the two men who were both also stunning.
Dahlia smiled at both of them and mumbled a quiet ‘hello’, too scared of being received with another ice-cold comment from Aemond. The three of them had been stood next to what looked to be a young heifer, one that seemed to visibly be in discomfort. It’s belly was extremely swollen, her hind legs were regularly kicking at her stomach and stomping into the soft wet surface of the floor.
‘Right well we’ll have to get Criston out her to have a look at her… there goes another four hundred dragons’ Alicent sighed looking the animal over, her hands on her hips.
‘Mum, I told you to just sell them to Nyra, they’re more hassle than they’re worth’ Aemond huffed, a slight glint of distaste as he watched his brother pat the animals side like she was a pet.
‘Is it trapped wind? I know something that might help if you don’t mind me trying’ Dahlia asked nervously, noticing the defeat in Alicents face.
The woman looked at her unsure before nodding and waving for her to give it a go.
‘Erm does anyone have like a nail or knife? Something sharp?’
Aegon began rifling through the deep pockets on his fleece jacket, he pulled out long loose nail and handed it to her. She moved closer to the cow, avoiding her jolting legs and stroke her side soothingly. Finding a spot towards the back of the hard bloated stomach, Dahlia used all of her strength to pierce the thick layer of skin, the cow let out a long loud sound of relief when she removed the nail and the hot smelly air began to release from her stomach.
‘That should do it’ Dahlia huffed wafting the horrible smelling gas away from her face as she stepped back and the animal visibly relaxed.
‘Really? That simple?’ Alicent asked astounded.
‘It’s a trick I learnt from someone I studied under in the capital; vets don’t tell you about it because they can charge you hundreds on medication. Just need to keep an eye on her for the rest of the day and make sure she’s eating properly and that wound will heal itself in a few days as long as it’s been cleaned’.
‘Dahlia almost has her master’s degree in veterinary care for agricultural purposes’ Haelena bragged nudging her best friend.
‘Really?! Well you let me know as soon as you have that degree, I could use somebody like you working with us’ Alicent grins at the girl, admiring how the heifer had returned to business as usual, grazing at the grass.
Aemond had began to head off the field before the rest of them, Dahlia was unsure of whether she had heard him scoff or not before he walked away from the group. As the rest of them walked back towards the house, Aegon chirping down her ear some of the small hacks he knew and how he could teach them to her sometime, Dahlia couldn’t help but feel a bit uncomfortable. She had only had two interactions with Aemond yet both times he seemed to be inpatient with her. Had she done something wrong? Something to make her seem strange. Perhaps he just wasn’t keen on being around new people or perhaps he was just a complete dick, either way she had no intention of spending a lot of time around him.
It was heaven when Dahlia got to crawl onto the soft mattress later that night, her stomach full from the meal Haelena and Baela had cooked for everyone. Her limbs melted like butter underneath the thick warm blanket and her head sunk into the pillow like it was a cloud. She had decided on an oversized shirt as her pyjamas and shoved her long copper her on top of her head for a good night’s sleep. Her room was on the very top floor of the house, at the end of the landing. She had watched Aegon go into the room next to hers and she was sure Aemond had disappeared into the room opposite hers not long after. Dahlia must have fallen asleep in seconds, her body finally giving up the fight, because the next thing she knew she was rolling out of bed. Despite having less than fifteen hours sleep in the last two days, her body clock hadn’t gotten the memo. She had lay in bed refusing to get up for twenty minutes, hoping to fall back asleep but to no luck.
Usually she was up at 5am for an hour-long jog before beginning her day but not being able to navigate her surrounding area Dahlia decided it was safer to pass on it this morning. She had managed to sleep in a little but even at 5:45 the house seemed to still be asleep. Dahlia padded down the stairs in her fluffy socks and entered the kitchen, she flicked the switch on the kettle planning on a nice hot cup of coffee to start her day.
Dahlia stood against the counter waiting for the kettle to boil when she noticed the light glowing through the windows of the stable. She wasn’t the only one awake apparently, deciding whether or not to go and offer any help she settled for making breakfast for everyone. She was familiar with Haelena’s sleep routine so knew she would be appearing from her basement bedroom in the next 30 minutes, just enough time to make pancakes.
Finding everything she needed in the pantry, Dahlia set to work measuring, mixing and flipping until she had enough pancakes for at least five people, fresh fruit set out on the table along with syrups, sugar and fresh squeezed lemon juice. She was in the middle of whisking together another batch of mixture when a small whine and scratching noise caught her attention. Dahlia placed the bowl on the counter and opened the sliding glass doors of the kitchen.
‘Hello little one, you must be Vhagar’ Dahlia smiled down at the soggy ball of fluff, standing aside to let the poor girl inside.
Vhagar was a breed of sheepdog that was no longer bred commercially, an old breed originating in Valyria that was almost impossible to obtain. Dahlia watched the poor dog walk straight to her food bowl and sniff about, gulping down water. Unsure of where the dog food was kept, Dahlia began snooping around the cupboards, Vhagar following her every step, sticking her head in every cupboard and sniffing the contents.
‘Mind your head nosy hole’ Dahlia laughed, not hearing someone step through the door that she had left open.
‘Excuse me?’ Aemond questioned, making his presence known and making Dahlia jump out of her skin, hitting her head on the draw above her.
‘Gods…I was speaking to Vhagar’ she breathed calming herself down.
Vhagar ran around the table to Aemond’s feet, wiggling her tail with so much excitement her bum rocked from side to side.
‘Hey you, where have you been? I’ve been looking for you everywhere!’ Aemond cooed, kneeling down to pet her tatty damp fur.
Dahlia couldn’t help but smile watching the interaction between man and his best friend. How he let her stand against him, front paws on his shoulder licking his face affectionately. Dahlia returned to her cooking, pouring small circles of batter onto the hot baking pan.
‘I was trying to find her food, figured she was going to be hungry’ Dahlia mumbled to Aemond over her shoulder.
She was received with a ‘hmm’ and the sound of his feet walking to the pantry, followed by a bag rustling and biscuits hitting the metal bowl. Aemond gave a satisfied chuckle watching Vhagar scoff down her food and look to him for more.
‘I didn’t realise anyone else was up and out already, I’ve made pancakes for breakfast so help yourself there’s-‘
Dahlia turned around to inform him of all the condiments she had laid out but was met with the image of him retreating out of the room, plate of pancakes in one hand and another bowl of dog kibble In the other, Vhagar in tow. She stood astounded, no thank you or good morning or anything.
He was really starting to piss her off.
It was meant to be simple, you’d done one hundred and one of these raids in your time as an police officer, as back up, on the front line. You were used to the surge of adrenaline beforehand, the thud of your heart in your chest as everything became more saturated, more focused. There was a clarity in what you’re doing, a sense of satisfaction. You know who the bad guys are, what they’ve done, you’ve seen the fallout. All that’s left is this, the apprehension.
You know they are in there, the Dewoski brothers. Leon, Mickey and Pete. Holed up in their dead mother’s house, hungover to fuck. Munson had sold them out, for immunity and a bid in the witness protection program. The fence didn’t have the stomach for the violence, he’d been selling off the Degas so he could get the hell out of dodge. Selling stolen shit was one thing but murder was a whole other ball game.
“And there’s our delivery girl.” Sinclair said from the shelter of the sedan as the two of you watched a moped pull up alongside chain link fence.
“I’m telling you McMuffins are the way to go when your hungover.” You told him, opening your car door and stepping out. “That and a Vanilla Milkshake.”
“Hm…” Sinclair shook his head. “It’s Strawberry all the way.”
You rolled your eyes before approaching the delivery driver, your badge clasped in your hand as you flashed it at her.
“I need to borrow your hat and jacket.”
It wasn’t hard to convince her. A cool story to tell in a bar over a couple of mojitos and she was sold. The jacket was baggy, fitting loosely over your bulletproof vest and sidearm. You slung the delivery bag over your shoulder, before tipping the peak of your cap to Sinclair and striding towards the front door. The burgundy paint was peeling, and the front yard had seen much better days, whatever they were spending the money on it wasn’t the upkeep of the house.
“Team Two is in position at the rear at the building.” Paul’s voice sounded over the ear piece. You ignored the way your nerves jangled at the timbre of his voice in your ear.
Sinclair and Lou followed you up the garden path, taking up residence on either side of the door. You could smell the weed permeating through the walls of the property as you stood before the door, preparing to knock.
“Team One in position.” Sinclair’s voice sounded before giving you the nod.
Your knuckles rapped on the door, scraps of crimson flaking onto your skin as you waited patiently. There was a shuffling on the opposite side, a slow shift as the locks were drawn back and Mickey’s face appeared. Bloodshot eyes, five o’clock shadow marring his jaw. His clothes looked slept in, the stench of pot clinging to him. He held the door wide, snatching up cash from the sideboard as you unzipped the waterproof coat, revealing your badge and bullet proof vest. Your Glock was already in your hand when he turned his attention back to you, his gaze falling on the gun pointed at his chest.
“NYPD.” You announced. “Put your hands on your head.”
You stepped into the building as Mickey complied.
“Team Two breach.” Sinclair uttered into the radio. You heard the back door slam open, smashing against the wall so loudly it practically vibrated through the house. A shout went up, an exclamation of surprise from another room.
Lou was already fastening the cuffs on Mickey’s wrists, his fingers curling in the guy’s collar as he yanked him towards the door. You pressed the button on your radio.
“Target One secure…”
You released the button as the gunshot rang out, cutting through the air like an explosion. Your gun swung up as plaster erupted from the wall behind you, spewing dust into the air. Sinclair was already beside you, hand on your shoulder and gun levelled at the oncoming threat. You weren’t sure which one of you saw the letters first, they were barely visible in the haze of plaster dust. However, Sinclair’s his grip relaxed almost as simultaneously as your gun dipped.
“It’s Russo…”
The first bullet impacted. A blossom of heat roaring through your chest as it smashed into you, sending you careening into the wall. Your right arm went numb, your Glock slipped from your fingers as the second one slammed into you, knocking the air right out of you chest.  Your ears were ringing like crazy, black spots speckling your vision as your knees buckled.
You didn’t remember hitting the floor, only the explosion of light behind your eyes as your head bounced off the laminate. Excruciating pain lanced through your ribs as you tried to suck in a breath, a choked rasp leaving your lips. Sinclair’s face appeared in your vision; his lips were moving but you couldn’t hear him over the rush of blood in your head. He was trying to remove the vest, you felt it loosen as he unfastened the Velcro but it didn’t seem to make a difference. You still couldn’t fucking breathe.
The darkness was charging in, enveloping your vision with every stuttered gasp.  You tried to fight it but you could feel yourself slipping backwards into the abyss.
Your fingers grasped Sinclair’s sleeve as you sank into oblivion, a final weak attempt to anchor yourself before you suffocated. There was no reprieve, no comfort, just this agony searing through your body as the shadows closed in.
