#also the whole the gods never did anything for me thing that keeps happening#not to be rude but did you ever try to contact them or did you just think they would randomly intercede#if you avoid their spheres of influence don’t be shocked if they also avoid you
these tags by @wackachewbacca on this post reminded me of a German saying/joke I’ve heard in Cologne once. I didn’t want to derail the original post too much, so here’s my own. Anyway, the joke goes: “A man prays to God everyday, ‘please, God, let me win the lottery.’ Every day: ‘please, God, let me win the lottery.’ Every week, every day: ‘I didn’t win the lottery again. Oh why, God? Please, please let me win the lottery!’ One day, finally, he hears a voice answer his prayer. It sounds very tired as it says ‘Come on, pal, give me a chance. Buy a ticket.’ ”
And this feels very much exactly like what is described in the tags and I agree completely. Pointedly not talking about Deanna and her understandably complex relationship with the Dawnfather (which is very very delicious and I love every second it’s onscreen) here, because that’s not what I mean. Complicated relationships between Gods and their followers are interesting and a great exploration (also see pretty much everything re: FCG since they started following the Changebringer), but those are decidedly not the people ever going “What have the gods ever done for me?” It’s so far mostly been people that say themselves “Oh no, I don’t really have anything to do with the gods”. If they indicated that they worshipped one or some of the Exandrian gods for a significant time and then felt snubbed when they asked for help and didn’t receive any, I might understand their point a bit more (even if the matter would probably be more complicated). But as it is, it’s like if the guy in the joke wouldn’t even pray to his god to get a lottery ticket, it’s just a person randomly going “Well, the gods certainly never helped ME win the lottery” after hearing that someone wants to dispose of the gods.
And yes, they’re engaging the whole thing in the show with a bit more nuance than I probably give them credit for here, but combined with the number of times the same arguments get brought up without anything new (or even old valid) points to back it up, it gets a bit much for me. Especially with how exhausting the fandom can be about this topic.

Ngl I can see why people favor the Mighty Nein over Vox Machina. A lot of the stuff VM suffered as a group MN seem to have that down pat within the first ten or so episodes. I love VM but they’re mortals trying to be gods trope has nothing on the MN’s found family vibe. I think it helped that I hadn’t watched MN before starting VM so I had no idea of how great VM could have been if they followed the same route as MN
(Apologies in advance for the late night rambles.)
Honestly, most of my IRL friends have seen campaign 1 but then got bored during campaign 2, so I had no idea that ppl preferred the M9. I think the “mortals trying to be gods” thing is a p on the nose description of VM. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with that! Especially for like typical D&D. We all want to make believe that we’re much more powerful and impactful than we actually are.
But goddamn do I love me some found family. Maybe it’s just cuz of my upbringing, but found family just hits in the sweet spot. I can see myself joking along the M9 (albeit minus the intense backstory and general badassary) in a way I can’t really envision with Vox Machina. Which again, isn’t a bad thing. VM has a hella compelling narrative. It just doesn’t sit in the same emotional space that campaign 2 does, which is a thing I’m getting used to.
To be fair, I also think that the M9 fit differently together than VM because of the practicalities of the Critical Role show itself. The CR cast sit down and consistently play for hours every. single. week. to progress their story and find how they slot in with one another in real-time. I’m sure VM started out as your typical D&D game: sporadic, passionate, and wanting to accomplish so much in so little time. With the Mighty Nein, we get to regularly follow them as they work out the kinks in their relationship, which is something we never got with VM (and the cast didn’t totally get either, what with the Twins’ and Pike+Grog’s backstories starting out as siblings).
At the end of the day, Vox Machina is absolutely fantastic, but they’re just a whole other ball game than the Mighty Nein. I’m honestly incredibly excited for the Legend of Vox Machina even though I’m not as emotionally attached to the VM characters as yet, because I know it’s going to be a kickass story, just like everything the Critical Role team produces. However, I think the Mighty Nein’s clear and gradual progression of relationships in campaign 2 makes it a better entry point for newcomers—at least, if that latter tone is more of your cup of tea.
