the fundamental thing is that militaries suck very bad in general and we should get rid of them but mandatory draft militaries and “voluntary” enlistment militaries are equally bad and fuck up society in different ways where one isn’t actually better than the other

Edible Arrangements v. Green Thumb Industries: Voluntary Dismissal, For Now
Edible Arrangements v. Green Thumb Industries: Voluntary Dismissal, For Now
By Jihee Awn, Attorney at Harris Bricken We regularly cover intellectual property disputes on the blog, and the Edible Arrangements v. Green Thumb Industries trademark infringement case is one we covered two years ago when filed. Since then, this case appears to have been moderately active, with the parties engaging in the usual discovery and related motion practice. However, things did take a…

I don't remember how old I was when I first picked up on the fact that nobody in my family wants to be a part of this family. At that point I just figured that this is just what some families are like, not all families can consist of people who actually like being around each other. As a matter of fact, I don't think I was aware that such families even exist. That was a clear distinction - friends are people who are in your life because you want to be around them, and family is people who are in your life because you have to be around them. And our parents were just as unhappy with this as we were.
It was only as an adult that I actually understood that for my parents, every single part of this arrangement was voluntary. Nobody made either of them get married to someone they don't like. Nothing prohibited them from going to therapy or just getting a divorce. Nobody made them have kids, they had us on purpose and mom would have wanted a third one too, despite of it being clear by then that dad didn't like children and didn't like the first two either.
Nobody made them do any of this. They chose to grit their teeth to play house for literally no reason and nobody's benefit. They taught that resentfully enduring the life you're forced to live is just what being alive is like, while completely neglecting to mention that they fucking chose to live like this. They lived in a prison of their own construction, that they would have been free to leave at any time, but instead opted to create people who had no choice but to suffer it with them.
I don't resent them for thinking they deserved to live in the kind of misery they chose. What I can't forgive is never thinking that their children wouldn't deserve any better.

˚₊‧୨୧˚ SWEET ENCOUNTERS !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[૮₍ ˃ࡇ˂ ₎ა]: meet cutes with your favourite bllk boy ! but of course, in a high school setting bc i’m a sucker for high school romance >:)
tags. isagi, kunigami, nagi, kaiser, reo, rin x gn!reader (separately), 1793 wc, idk what genre but no sad stuff hehe, first interactions, uh idk why reo and rin’s ones are so long lol, reader is called ‘pretty’ in kaiser’s, ooc mb ??, somewhat proofread ig
Tumblr media
ISAGI YOICHI — (deskmates)
it was monday when your teacher decided to switch up the seating arrangements, and she scribbled all your names on slips of paper that were thrown into a hat. one by one, your friends were getting paired together, and you were pleasantly surprised when your name was called with isagi’s name.
you’ve never really talked to him before, and the two of you didn’t have any classes in common. but, you knew that he was popular amongst your female classmates—they often giggled over his smiles and compliments.
you acknowledged that he was handsome, relatively popular, and a charismatic individual, but in all honesty, you didn’t find anything special about him.
but when you brought your belongings to your allocated desk, isagi graced you with a smile that reminded you of the violet petunias in the school garden as he motioned to the empty desk besides him.
“you can take the window seat. enjoy the sight when it’s raining—i think it’s quite pretty.”
in this particular moment, you were beginning to understand why your friends have always appreciated his character.
like a flower in spring, something about isagi made him...
“thanks, isagi. i’ll make sure to.”
...alluring.
Tumblr media
KUNIGAMI RENSUKE — (voluntary assistance)
given that your school’s volleyball coach had recently sprained his ankle and was now on crutches, your heart couldn’t bear to see him struggle to bring the equipment into the gym. so, as manager of the school’s volleyball team, you didn’t even have to think twice before providing the coach some assistance.
but now it was your turn to struggle. to save yourself some time, you stacked two crates together and carried them to the gym at the same time. admittedly, it was a little hard—you were peering past the crates to see.
“h-hey! i’ll help you!”
confused, you looked behind you to find that kunigami was running towards you. behind him, you can see his friends following him from a distance, and he quickly removed the crates from your hold, taking them into his hands instead.
“o-oh wait! i’ll take one.”
kunigami simply let out a friendly chuckle as he shook his head. “it’s all good. they’re not heavy. heading to the gym?”
considering that no one else has helped you bring the volleyballs, and you were just a couple steps away from the building, you genuinely appreciated kunigami’s chivalry as he waited for your answer.
“yeah.” you returned his smile. “thanks.”
Tumblr media
NAGI SEISHIRO — (project partners)
unfortunately for you, nagi was placed in your group for the upcoming group project.
“nagi? we’d appreciate it if you could also help us research.”
initially, you were rather excited to work on this new psychology project. but with nagi seishiro in your group, who’s only ever been seen sleeping in your classes, you’re not so sure anymore.
“i’ll do it later,” he mumbled, nestling his head into his arms. your friend besides you rolled her eyes, jokingly raising her fist towards him once nagi had closed his eyes.
it was infuriating that he was unwilling to cooperate with you and your friend, considering that this was a group project, and not a solo task. what put you off even more was that your teacher has decided to assess you all as a group rather than individually.
you weren’t going to let nagi seishiro’s idleness bring your grade down.
“we don’t have time to research later, nagi. we actually have to carry out the experiment next lesson,” you stated firmly. your vexation was stained in your tone, yet the boy refused to read the room.
adjusting his head to look at you, nagi yawned. “stop stressing out, [name]. this isn’t even worth that mu—”
“it’s worth forty percent of our final grade, nagi. just because you don’t care about your marks doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t care about ours,” you hissed bitterly, snapping your laptop shut.
as you slapped the briefing paper before him, nagi stared straight at you. “i hope that you’ll come to realise that a group project requires everyone’s efforts—and that includes you.”
Tumblr media
MICHAEL KAISER — (money’s on the line)
for him to win the twenty euros that were on the line, the condition was that kaiser must flirt with the next person who walks into the classroom for a week, strictly.
and it was you who happened to have walked in after the bet was established.
“hey, [name]!” kaiser jumped off the desk he was sitting on as he approached you with a look on his face that clearly meant he was up to no good. “what class do you have next?”
you thought for a while before you returned to your seat, with kaiser tailing behind you. “history, i think.”
the boy simply nodded his head as he dragged a nearby chair besides you, comfortably inviting himself to be near you. “cool. want me to walk you there?”
considering that he offered to walk you to your next class, which is something completely out of the norm (you’ve hardly ever talked to him before), you gave him a confused look. with his tie loosely hung around his neck and the top buttons of his shirt deliberately undone to reveal a tiny portion of his physique, his appearance was enough for you to identify him as someone you shouldn’t associate with.
“...what?”
kaiser leant in closer with a smirk that was a trademark of his persona. “i’ll walk you to history. just in case you get lonely, y’know?”
“uh, no, than—”
“i’ll walk you. it’s not every day that i get to walk someone as pretty as you to class.”
Tumblr media
MIKAGE REO — (playing messenger)
you failed to contain your sigh when your female classmate asked you for a favour—to give her confession letter that had little pink hearts littered over the envelope to mikage reo.
when you said no to her request, her only rebuttal was that you seemed to be acquainted with him (you weren’t). but you’ve watched her hesitate to give the envelope when he walked past her before, and since you still had some sort of compassion in you, you finally acceded. of course, you asked for something in return: the most expensive drink from the vending machine.
and now, with her letter in your hands, you peered from the classroom door as you located your target. the fact that he was surrounded by a relatively large number of his peers made you choke on your own saliva. and god—you were going to look like one of his dumb fangirls who usually confess with a bag of heart-shaped cookies or a love letter (you’d be in the latter category).
slipping the letter in your pocket, you approached him and grabbed his attention by patting his shoulder.
as reo turned around, waiting for you to ask your question, all his friends grew silent, gazing at you with disparaging eyes.
“could you come out for a second? i just need to give you something.”
and he nodded his head as he left his friends with you. scanning the hallway left and right, you and reo stood behind the classroom door.
“here,” you murmured, passing the envelope to him. ignoring the amused spark in his eyes, you cut him off with a raised hand before he could speak. “let me clarify—this is not from me. a classmate asked me to pass this to you.”
reo chuckled as he flipped the envelope over. “you don’t have to lie, y’know. i’ve received many confession bef—”
“since it seems like i wasn’t clear enough before, let me say it again—i’m not interested in you.”
and with that, you turned your heel to retrieve the drink your classmate owes you as reo hopes to see you around these halls again.
Tumblr media
ITOSHI RIN — (athlete meets artist)
as a prominent member of the school’s art club, you were in charge of welcoming guests into the art room that the art teacher had meticulously decorated. even if you were slightly embarrassed to have some of your artwork pinned up on the walls, you took pride in your pieces as they were all a product of your passions and desires.
while the art room was not as popular as the plays and cafes that were set up in other classrooms, there were still a few people who visited with the intention of appreciating the intricate sculpture made by the captain of the art club.you expected your friends to visit (and they did), as did some of the second-year students you were acquainted with, but you definitely didn’t expect itoshi rin to walk in, mindlessly observing the room.
as you got up from your seat, you greeted rin with a polite smile.
“are you interested in painti—”
“no. i just have nothing to do right now,” he said curtly, passing you. as rin roamed around, browsing the drawings with one quick glance, his eyes landed on your painting. it was displayed right in the centre of all the other artworks, with a colour scheme that was much different from all the other paintings.
you struggled to hide your grin when rin paused to examine your art piece (you were happy to see another person acknowledging your art). “do you like it, itoshi?”
you pretended to brush off the awkwardness that embraces you as you’re met with silence. rin doesn’t respond for a while as he’s seemingly studying the brushstrokes on your painting. “what’s the point of doing this?”
you pondered over this question for a brief moment before you responded, tracing your fingertips over the edge of your painting. “because it’s fun, in my opinion. you can tell a story by creating an artwork using different colours and mediums, so it’s great for someone who might not be great with their words.”
“but doing all this...” he said, hovering his finger over the details on your painting. “looks like a lot of effort. i wouldn’t be bothered.”
“i suppose,” you shrugged, turning to face rin properly. “itoshi, you play soccer, right?”
rin finally looked at you, responding to your question with a terse “hmm”.
“it’s like you with soccer, i guess. every day, just like you, i’m also refining my skills so i can prove to my family that i’m an exceptional artist. then maybe they’ll let me fulfil my dream of going to art school.”
reaching for the tidy pile of art brochures you organised, you handed rin a copy as you spoke. “for you, all this may seem tedious. but for me, this is what i love. and i’m willing to spend years on this if it means that i can be one of the best artists in japan.”

okay the thing abt housing communes is the same thing abt sober houses and similar, you lose the voluntary participation element when you start looking for new roommates but expect your agreements to be the same. you're opening up the arrangement to the social forces of capital b/c people need housing and it's commodified. and if you offer them cheap housing on the condition that they follow your community's rules or expectations, they're in a position where the basic coercion of capitalism is pushing them to agree to things they might not otherwise agree to. which is how u end up with adults who live at sober houses and have to hide their personal drug use like a high schooler for fear of losing their housing. which sucks. the pre-existing bonds of friendship are what make these arrangements work when they work, but it's the reign of the autonomous commodity that often makes them fail

Jumping on the moo cart 🐮
Instead of conquest, the catpeople come to the cow kingdom for mutual aid and an alliance - the cowpersons need strong martial defenses, which cats can provide and catpeople need an additional (voluntary) nutritional supplement, as they are experiencing a long term drought.
The Endless Royal Cat family is willing to marry second son, Prince Dream, to Crown Prince Robert of the Royal Cow family. And as both Dream and Robert have sons, there is little concern for heirs at this time.
To encourage cats to drink from the cowpersons who choose to provide that service, part of the marriage ceremony is Dream carefully lapping at (the hoboobies ahm, cough, cough) the royal breasts of his new husband.
OOO a great new take on this whole concept! A mutually beneficial arrangement, I like it!
Hob is so nervous about this whole thing. He wants to do his duty, of course, but he feels so shy and awkward. He’s met Prince Dream before on a few brief occasions, and he was so beautiful and regal! By comparison Hob feels so bulky. He’s considered attractive by cowperson standards, but what will Dream think of him? Will he be put off by Hob’s horns or his large breasts? Will he even want to drink Hob’s milk?
Naturally he has nothing to worry about. Prince Dream is feeling anxious too, but only because he’s so excited and horny about Prince Hob. He’s always admired the cowpeople and their way of life, but even more so he’s admired the crown Prince and his voluptuous figure. Dream wants to put his face between those beautiful breasts and never face the world again.
Hopefully Hob gets the right idea from Dream’s little mews of pleasure during their marriage ceremony. He blushes as he sees Dream’s beautiful blue eyes wide and round, his mouth working happily against Hob’s teat. Apparently mutual attraction isn’t going to be an issue!
Dream assures him later that the milk is delicious and that he’s not sure he’ll be able to live another day without tasting it. Hob is still blushing, but he’s also cupping the back of Dream’s silky head and pulling him to his breast as they tumble into their marriage bed. He’s going to keep his husband so well fed from now on, and he’s quite sure that the catpeople in general won’t have to worry about the drought anymore. The cowpeople will take good care of their new allies, by following their crown prince’s example!
(I like to imagine that from then on Dream is the glossiest, shiniest catperson. His husband’s milk is just so good for him.)

Hypothetically speaking, what would one of Hyden’s preceding siblings turned out to be like had they survived into adulthood? Doubly so if Hyden still came to be, courtesy of preemptive pessimism for child-viability, and they shared a household. I’d kill to know what sort of absurd dynamic he’d have with an Older Sister or what her appearance might be like in comparison (contrast ??) to his.
That's an interesting hypothetical!
*BELOW IS ALL NON-CANON SPECULATION*
Tumblr media
I think many factors could influence this… the biggest ones would be "how good at magic is this hypothetical sibling" as well as "how physically and mentally fucked up is this hypothetical sibling." Going with the "older sister" route, I can see a couple different outcomes:
Older Sister who is much more sickly and/or unable to use magic at all: Hyden wouldn't be that different. He'd still grow up seeing himself as his family's only real heir. He would probably feel some resentment and anger to his sister for "wasting" his parents' time and energy despite being obviously unfit to inherit the family mantle. Otherwise, though, he'd basically act as if she didn't exist. Their mother Aurelia would immediately switch to caring about her magically-inclined son rather than her mundane daughter. The rejected Older Sister might find solace getting along with Arcturus III, their introverted and ineffectual father… which would only deepen Hyden's dislike for her.
Older Sister who is magically-inclined and not on death's door: This would get interesting. As a male heir, he would supersede her in terms of title inheritance--something she would be quite displeased by if she'd grown up planning her life around being heir apparent. So I could see a serious rivalry forming. I think that especially with Hyden's growth disorder making him get really tall at a really young age she'd see him as a noxious invasive cuckoo chick poised to rapidly overtake her life and replace her.
As Hyden has previously stated (?), "madness" runs in his family, though. There are… solutions… to an undesirable usurper poised to steal your title that are available to the morally flexible noble. And, well, he was always sickly, right? If poor, dear baby brother were to pass away in his sleep after something was slipped into his wine glass at dinner… who's to say it wasn't a death of natural causes? Maybe it would even be the kinder option. I mean, the family healer always said that he was unlikely to survive to adulthood…
Baby Hyden's longevity here would probably come down to whether or not he figured out what his sister was plotting and turned the tables on her before it was too late.
Tumblr media
A related possible path: He goes against inheritance norms and bows out of the wizard family title battle entirely, giving up on his magic schooling and allowing Older Sister to claim the role of Viscountess. He gets an arranged political marriage to a woman from another noble family and goes into another line of work. Maybe being a political advisor or researcher of magical artifacts something.
As you can imagine, this would be not be voluntary. More of a "Mom and Older Sister have leverage against me that I cannot overcome and were planning to kill me to get me out of the way, so we reached an agreement." Hyden would not be happy feeling like he'd been discarded and cheated out of his birthright. He would probably spiral downward over the years, chronically unable to find fulfillment or satisfaction, which he would blame on the fact that he'd been denied the life he was obviously supposed to have.
There would, of course, be many whispers about why the male heir would give up his title, though. It would be a really bad look. They'd figure there must be something terribly wrong with him.
Long story short: They wouldn't have a good relationship. The Hyden family dynamic is doomed to be a mess no matter what because everyone involved is extremely spoiled, extremely inbred, and extremely desperate to grab whatever power they can. They'd scheme and murder each other until there was one left standing no matter what.

Since I lack reading comprehension maybe you can explain what this passage in Leviticus means:
"As for the male and female slaves whom you may have, it is from the nations around you that you may acquire male and female slaves. You may also acquire them from among the aliens residing with you, and from their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property. You may keep them as a possession for your children after you, for them to inherit as property. These you may treat as slaves, but as for your fellow Israelites, no one shall rule over the other with harshness."
We went over this in the 19th c. but I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Sure. So with historical texts, including the Bible, you have to read them through the context in which they were written and not through a modern 21st century lens.
When you see the word "slave" here you're obviously assuming it's referring to chattel slavery but that's actually not the case.
To understand where God stands on slavery, you have to look at more than one verse in the Bible. It's a whole entire book and you can't just pull out one verse and think that makes you a theologian. In books like Leviticus, Exodus, and Deuteronomy, God was giving an entire law code to his people and all the laws were connected to each other. They weren't given as stand alone orders, which is why context is so important here.
In Exodus, the book prior to Leviticus where you got that verse, God lays out in the Mosaic law "Now one who kidnaps someone, whether he sells him or he is found in his possession, shall certainly be put to death." - Ex 21:16
This verse clearly shows that God views "kidnapping" people and selling them or if they are even found in their "possession" to be punishable by death, which is kind of weird for Him to say since you're pretty sure he condones slavery.
There's also a verse in Deuteronomy 23 that says "You shall not hand over to his master a slave who has escaped from his master to you. He shall live with you in your midst, in the place that he chooses in one of your towns where it pleases him; you shall not mistreat him."
So if God has outlawed kidnapping people, selling people, and has deemed that if a person working for you wants to leave they are free to do so and you should not force them back or mistreat them, it certainly seems that he's outlawed all the main components of slavery.
And now we get to that verse in Leviticus.
You have to remember the Bible was not written in English and the Hebrew word used here for slave, in this context, really would mean something more like a servant or employee.
And it makes sense, as you have the word "acquire" in the verse to understand it more like hire especially since we know in Exodus God outlawed selling people so it wouldn't make any sense for him to condone it in Leviticus.
The only time the Bible is "condoning slavery" is when it's a case of voluntary servitude. Slavery, back in the time the Bible was written, was not the chattel slavery you are familiar with today. It was often used as a way to pay debts. People would agree to work for someone else for a specified period of time in order to pay off a debt and then once they had fulfilled their agreement they were free to go. It was not cases of people being enslaved and forced to work for someone else with no compensation against their will.
If you read more than that one verse whenever God is "condoning slavery" this is the kind of slavery he's talking about and he puts most of the power of the slave/master relationship with the slave as he is allowed to leave whenever he wants and if it would by chance be a lifelong arrangement that would only occur if it was by the slave's choosing.
So the verse you pulled is not an endorsement of enslaving people it's essentially God saying you can "hire" people from all those groups.
The word property sounds harsh because in English it is a harsh word but remember the Bible wasn't written in English and in Hebrew it's essentially the equivalent of a boss referring to someone as "their" employee.

Progress update
Allow me to first thank you for the warm reception of the demo, for the sweet messages I've gotten, and for all the forms of encouragement through other channels. It's so cool to see you all here, I appreciate all the interactions ❤
Since the demo drop, I've taken a short break from writing to recharge, but as of now, I am back to it. The game structure is meant to be sort of episodic, exploring various matches, while also dealing with the overarching plot that will involve our long-stay friends Sam and M. Now let's see what we have to cover with our first match after that start. On one hand, we will be orchestrating an in-game event (I am getting dangerously attached to Beets & Dungeons 🥺), on the other, hijacking arranging a whole-ass gallery exhibition (with a fashionable twist, since Selma is a digital artist 😏). Setting things in motion, (in)voluntary team building exercises and more of your workplace being...well, a workplace. That's a bit of branching, but I have a few pages of written notes to keep it manageable.
Hope you're enjoying yourselves here, and thank you again!

Honestly any alien species or intelligent machine that knows no morals and either benefits from human existence or doesn't benefit from destroying humanity would probably get along with humans pretty well. Humans are predictably irrational, so while an artificial intelligence or a completely alien life form wouldn't really give enough of a shit about even trying to comprehend it, they would probably quickly figure out that getting along amiably is simply easier.
Exterminating humanity is too risky - they react quickly, and if you don't succeed on the first time, they will find a way to destoy you before you can try again. And enslaving them would simply be less efficient than finding some sort of a voluntary arrangement - not only will they disobey in captivity, they cope with captivity by disobeying where you can't see it or stop it. Not only will they escape frequently, escaping is the only thing they'll focus on achieving, either by seizing unexpected opportunities or feigning compliance while biding their time while crafting elaborate plans. And the ones who got loose would help the others escape as well.
A creature that doesn't comprehend ideas like "free will", "freedom" or "spite", but functions by cold calculations alone, would figure out that they'll get more out of the human species by talking nicely, asking their opinions, honouring the petty little illogical demands they make, and letting their have their little symbols of autonomy and independence, than trying to wrangle them into anything by force. Just because you could eradicate most of them and enslave the rest, doesn't mean it's worth the trouble.
I mean hell, even if the aliens want to keep human specimen captive as pets, handling them in degrading and dehumanising way, there absolutely are perverts who would freely volunteer for that.
I get that stories require conflict to be interesting, but an intelligent, cold and calculating, and 100% pure logic-based being wouldn't bother with handling humanity in a hostile way. It's inefficient. However, a villainous creature that believes itself to function on 100% pure logic but makes the mistake of antagonising humans anyway because it lacks enough self-awareness to realise it is acting illogically and that hate is an emotion too, is a hot dish of delicious irony that's absolutely top tier. 10/10.

It irks me that the overwhelming majority of Damijon arranged marriage fics on ao3 are negative towards the concept. The view in white America is that it's immoral, forced marriage, about control. I have to say that's a racist mischaracterization. Arranged marriages are completely normal practices as capable of being healthy as any marriage and arguably moreso. My culture throws the baby out with the bathwater worrying about abuse like it's somehow arranged marriage's fault and not the abusers'. Arranged marriage is voluntary.
When I search for the arranged marriage tag I want to see them being arranged to marry, not forbidden lovers because one of them is betrothed to another. It especially bothers me because Damian is Pakistani. Imposing our arbitrary morals onto his fictional life. We think we do it better but dating, courtship, arranged betrothal, they're all just different ways of partnering up. What matters is the connection, the companionship.
I've noticed it's a problem specifically with the super sons as my other ships have a more equal balance of pro vs anti arranged marriage fics. I think I'll write my own fic. Talia as a good mom who sets Damian up with Jon. Jon's nervous about it but he forms a strong connection and companionship and eventually falls deeply in love (where my demiromantics at?) To where he's so greatful to Talia.
Damian at first sees it as his duty but then when he gets to know Jon he realizes that Talia did this to try to better her son's life, not control it. She gives him a talk about how the marriage is entirely up to him. after that Damian allows his feelings to come into the picture, expecting resentment to creep in but instead receives a flood of affection towards Jon.
For their wedding I think I'll do some research on wedding traditions from the area the league is set in and base their ceremony on that. If you want to reblog to add anything on like for example resources about weddings and arranged marriages I would be. So so happy.
Final note: I don't think Talia would set them up as children! I do think it could be cute in fiction but it's certainly not realistic.
