We’ve got a brand new teen volunteer-submitted Spotify playlist to get you going this week! Abi submitted this fantastic, nearly two hours long, playlist inspired by @rainbowrowell’s Eleanor & Park. It’s got everything from Simon and Garfunkel throwbacks to Harry Styles to early 2000’s Plain White T’s. Check the link in our bio to give it a listen!

#whattodo #virtualvolunteers #stayhomestaybusy #dogood #petrescue Hey yall I just got an email notification from Volunteer Match, a organization that's connected me to wonderful charities and volunteer work in the past. They are now promoting literally THOUSANDS of virtual volunteer opportunities, where you can make REAL LIFE CHANGE while staying safe at home. I know some of us, like myself, are fortunate and are still working full time. However even with full time work, theres a huge amount of downtime, and staying productive might not always feel possible! I know I'm THRILLED to see theres online ways I can help shelters, any charity with their website maintenance, fundraising for important causes, and like this example, from the important Dallas Pets Alive rescue transport organization, you could help them with their photos and promotion/communication with their transport team and help them save animals from kill shelters!! What is a BETTER way to spend time then to support those who are out on the road, saving homeless animals from kill shelters? Lets not think of this time as "jeez I HAVE to stay home Ugh" but rather "I get to focus on this important work I would not normally GET the opportunity to do". This post is already a short novel. Thank you for getting thru it and I promise more kitten and happy vids comin soon! (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_CR4WohXQU/?igshid=3vepgvomy9s1

LiveYourDream.org is an online volunteer network (by subscription) supported by Soroptimist, a women’s volunteer organization, that creates a platform for virtual volunteering and the ability to electronically track your impact. Their mission is to spread awareness, connect, mobilize, and encourage activists and volunteers to take action for women and girls.
“You choose your cause and course of action based on how much time you have. We give you the tools to take action in your community; whether it’s speaking up on social media, making a donation, signing petitions, printing and posting flyers, or working one-on-one with a woman in need—you choose how you’d like to make a difference on your own time.”                  -LiveYourDream.org

Examples of Virtual Volunteering
Do you know what virtual volunteering is? Do you know what the different types of virtual volunteering are? Virtual volunteers are categorized into three specific sections, namely, direct contact volunteers, technical assistance volunteers and informal volunteers.
Direct Contact Volunteers
The volunteers who come in connection with client through chat room or e-mail are referred to as direct contact volunteers. Such volunteers can connect via Internet and do the following.
• The volunteers can offer instructions or mentor students with answers, assist a job aspirant to look for career options or make a resume, assist prisoners with their studies, help an individual learn something, etc. • Visit someone convalescing at the hospital. • Participate in an online support group to advice members with the help of a newsgroup, list or chat room. The volunteers can create a chat room support system to answer queries from people. • Assist people to learn English. • The direct contact volunteers can monitor a chat room, newsgroup or e-mail discussion team for the volunteer organization they are involved with. • Welcome in advance people who are supposed to visit summer camp or go to a hospital. They can do this from Intranet, special Web page or through e-mail. The volunteers can send information about successive services to the same group of people. • Provide training to volunteers on a specific topic of expertise. • Work with clients and other volunteers to write news about special interest group or neighbourhood. They can collect historical data about a specific place or time period and then post it on web or print it.
Technical Assistance Volunteers
Technical Assistance Volunteers offer help in regards to projects related to a specific field of expertise or assignments based on objectives. This group can include both offsite and onsite volunteers. They can help in the following ways.
• These volunteers reply to queries related to accounting, human resources, speech writing, legal issues, management related matters, establishing a video conference, rendering industrial designs and creating strategies for a specific section of a volunteering agency. They offer professional consultancy. • They are involved in searching online for information for a government scheme that can impact the clients of a volunteering agency. They implement data in the forthcoming newsletter of a volunteer agency, find URL links of organizations with equivalent focus and make use of virtual directories to upgrade database. • Change the language of a document. • Create legislative buzzer for sending through e-mail, keeping tab of legislation which can have an impact on the clients of an agency and add data to online communities like, lists and newsgroups. • Craft brochure or newsletter for an agency and edit proposal or publication made by a volunteering agency. • Create Hypercard, PowerPoint, QuickTime or other presentations made with the assistance of computers. • Compose articles for newsletters, service pages and brochures. • Volunteers proofread online publications and paper drafts. • Research and come up with information for the website of a volunteering agency. • They craft illustrations and logo design for the service pages of a volunteer organization. • Ensure accessibility of the website to handicapped people. • Mentor the different types of planning at the organizational level, create a marketing strategy, and compile a technology plan. • Upload volunteer opportunities of an agency on database. • Register home page and other service pages of a volunteering organization with online directories and search engines. • Offer high-end programming to the agency website. • Create a database system by utilizing the database software developed by the technical assistance volunteers. • Offer orientation to all volunteers though the Internet, control the activities of the volunteers in all technical aspects, maintain volunteering hours and research about experiences of volunteers with an organization. • Regularly search for news and articles on a specific topic or an agency. Informal Volunteers
Numerous online discussion forums operate without the supervision of an agency. These groups promote the questioning and answering about any subject. Such online support caters to all types of needs ranging from home-schooling of children by parents, using certain software, fans of a hobby to those suffering from a disease. Those who provide support in these informal platforms are also called volunteers.
In order to participate in this type of setting, a user can subscribe through e-mail, indicate a news reader to a newsgroup or simply sign-up online. Volunteers do not have to adhere to any time limit; they can provide support at any time. Also, they do not have to undergo a screening procedure. Participants find such informal virtual support system very helpful and worthwhile.
Anyone lending help to make a difference in the lives of others are volunteers.  Volunteering is therefore, not limited to field job. The very approach to reach the goal of greater good is volunteering.

One of our amazing virtual teen volunteers, Salih, brought in his Spider-Man/Miles Morales inspired artwork for us to show off and display! As someone who just finally watched the second Spiderverse movie, I’m a little obsessed with that first painting. Anyway, we’ve got them displayed above the comics and graphic novels in the teen room. Come check them out!

So even though Poetry Month wrapped up in April, we wanted to feature this black-out poetry submitted by virtual teen volunteer Rebecca. This page in particular comes from The Trial of Joan of Arc, and we just love how poignant this turned out to be. Gorgeous job, Rebecca!
If you're ever interested in submitting your own work to potentially be featured on our Insta, check the link in our bio for more info about the virtual volunteering program!

We've got something very cool to share today. Since August of 2022, Kugu Scott has been participating in the library's virtual teen volunteering program and completing hundreds of hours of service by writing letters to homebound residents here in Wylie, creating recommended reading lists for other teens, and more. In February she emailed me to let me know that she had been selected to receive the Congressional Award Gold Medal, the only Congressional non-profit and the highest award for youth civilians. The photos here are from the North Texas award ceremony, but Kugu ALSO gets to go to the national award ceremony in Washington D.C. this June. It has been so cool to watch one of our virtual teen volunteers receive such a high honor, and we're so happy we have been able to play a part in it!
I mean, it just goes to show...you never know what could be possible if you volunteer with your local library 😉

We had to share this #shelfie submission. Ivy, one of our virtual (and in-person!) teen volunteers submitted this gorgeous pic of her bookcase at home and WOW. Color us impressed! Of her fantastic set-up, Ivy says "I like to keep my library magical." Well we can certainly see that! We can also spot a few of our favorites in there....see anything y'all like??

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! We had a couple of excellent slideshows submitted to our Virtual Teen Volunteer dropbox while we were gone, and we wanted to share this one from Abby, who has some excellent YA romance suggestions for your #tbr list!
Librarian's Note: The A Court of Thorns and Roses series was previously shelved in the YA section but has since been moved to the adult sci-fi/fantasy section due to a change in the marketing and content. But since this is teen-submitted, we included it regardless 😊

Did you know that for virtual volunteer credit you can make us a slideshow presentation about a book-related topic that you’re passionate about? Tiravanh, for example, sent us so many book recommendations for 10-14 year olds that we couldn’t fit them all on here. Plus MEMES. Always include book memes. Anyway, here’s some great reading recommendations! Hold and pinch to zoom to read!

We’ve got playlists galore for your weekend jams. Teen volunteer Medina loved the idea of putting together mixes that expressed what was happening in the book, and even the beat or the lyrics reminding you of certain scenes. So she sent us a TON of fantastic playlists, including the ones shown here. Use the link in our bio to get to her profile, and then TRY to even choose from the huge list she has! 🎧🎶
