My former English professor is retiring and gave away a bunch of the books in her office. She's a gem. I giddily returned to campus just to sort through her collection. Super excited about the ones I brought home with me. I thought someone else might appreciate some of the books I found.
I've already began poring over the poetry collections, but what should I read first? Are there any that you guys have read that you highly recommend?

17 and 19 for book asks!!! also I didn't see it on the list but what's your fave book you got this year? even if you haven't read it yet ♡-surrealisticduvet
end-of year book asks but i'm answering them in the next year...ah well better late than never?
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were? Spock's World by Diane Duane knocked my absolute socks off. I hadn't read that much sci-fi, or that many books based on movies/TV series. I guess I was expecting that this little brick of a paperback would be too sexist or dull (<- these are not problems unique to sci-fi, but they make sci-fi uniquely difficult for me to sit through when they are present in a work). But Spock's World not only affords dignity and esteem to all the characters in a way that honors the source material. The storytelling style is also so compelling and delicious through its entire 310-page run. It's a little fanservicey, but in a grounded way (though you'll never hear me complain, even if it was over-the-top). And hey, it was written by a fan, so there you go. Read more women sci-fi authors!
19. Did you use your library? You're funny. This year's library highlight was probably The Secret to Superhuman Strength, a graphic novel by Alison Bechdel about her journey to transcend human weakness. (No spoilers.) I had high hopes for Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, but I ended up having to return that one before I got very far :// There's always this year! I remember just about where it is on the shelf.
What's your favorite book you got this year? Fahrenheit 451 was a good one. It kept me sane on a plane, and it was nice to finally be able to talk about it with people who'd read it in high school. And it's always a plus when a much talked-about classic is actually good. Though I didn't make it past the introduction last year, I'm excited for Lady Chatterley's Lover book club :3 hopefully the same deal there. And of course, the Viking Portable Library Beat Reader looks great on my shelf ;p

The Monthly Gravette #5
The Monthly Gravette #5
It’s another month where I didn’t get all that much reading done, so I’ll talk a bit more about the books I added to my library – and, once again, recommend you listen to Words About Books, the highly enjoyable podcast co-hosted by my friend Nate, who took me to the cleaners the other night in Star Wars Monopoly. (I monopolized Dagobah and Tatooine. It wasn’t enough.) In any case, I added three…

The Portable Elizabethan Reader, The Portable Renaissance Reader, and Elizabethan and Jacobean Poets, all Viking Portable Library editions from the 1960s At the end of my freshman year at boarding school they were clearing books out of the attic and we could take any we wanted. That heavily piled table yielded me a lot of very interesting things, least of which are these three volumes. I loved the feel and design of them, and at 15 I thought myself a Serious Reader of poetry and plays. Have I ever really cracked them open? Nope. Still keeping them though, and maybe someday I will work on them. I enjoy seeing them on the shelf, reminding me of that day of free books at the end of a pretty tough year.

Comprehensive Exam Readings
My research “question”:
Many writers of U.S. fiction insert nonfiction documents into their narratives to critique how marginalized citizens are excluded from their rights to equal protection granted by the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. I’m interested in how African American authors and other writers of color have employed these strategies since the end of World War II; for example, the inclusion of real warrants for runaway slaves in Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad, or passages from U.S. treaties with Native American tribes featured in Watershed by Percival Everrett. In the essay, I will identify, historicize, and examine some of these conventions, and drawing upon Assemblage Theory and Third Space theory,  explore how these subversions of the fiction genre might allow authors of color to highlight historical truths, erase some of the distance between literary and political realms, and possibly affect political change.
To be completed by September 2020. (note: Strikethrough is complete / Bold means I intend to cite them in my comprehensive exam)
U.S. Fiction (Post ‘45): Major List
Guiding Questions:
How do works of geopolitical American fiction since the end of WWII explore the ways in which American exceptionalism has subjugated people of color? Specifically, how do these works examine the ways American colonial rule define U.S.–indigenous relations; and how do these works continue to engage with race in America since the Civil Rights movement?

Theory: Assemblage & Third Space Theory
Guiding Questions:
Can fiction be used as a tool to engender a new sense of belonging while rejecting a stable state of being? If so, how can this framework of assemblage be applied in fiction to highlight the ways local identities intersect with shared global perspectives? Can an assemblage approach to fiction encourage accountability for civil rights without state sanctioned legal status?

Best PlayStation 5 Gifts: PS5 Games and Gadgets for Holiday 2020
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The PlayStation 5 is essentially sold out everywhere, though sporadic restocks are expected at retailers between now and Christmas. If you’re lucky enough to snag one, you’re going to make the gamer in your life very happy this holiday season.
If you have managed to track a PS5 down, there are plenty of accessories and games that would make perfect companion pieces to Sony’s next-gen console. To help you out a bit, Den of Geek has picked the best PS5 gifts to get this holiday:
PlayStation 5
$499.99 with disc drive, $399.99 without disc drive
The hottest gift of the holidays, Sony’s hulking white monolith, actually comes in two varieties. The more expensive version includes a disc drive that plays physical PS5 and PS4 discs, plus 4K UHD Blu-ray movies. For $100 less, you can pick up the exact same console minus the disc drive, meaning all games will have to be downloaded digitally.
Regardless of which console you pick up, the PS5 boasts fantastic 4K graphics at 60 fps for most games, backwards compatibility with almost the entire PS4 library, the very fun pack-in game Astro Bot Rescue Mission, and the most revolutionary controller released in years.
Buy the PS5 on Amazon.
DualSense Wireless Controller
$59.99
At first glance, the DualSense looks a lot like previous PlayStation controllers, but after just a few minutes, it becomes clear that it provides a much more immersive experience than anything that’s come before. Thanks to haptic feedback, every in-game movement has its own distinct feel. Running on a solid floor makes the controller rumble with tiny taps, while getting hit by an enemy causes a much stronger vibration.
Adding to the immersion are the adaptive triggers. You can actually feel resistance while attempting to perform certain actions in a game. The new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has made fantastic use of this feature by giving each gun in the game its own amount of “pull.”
And if all that wasn’t enough, the controller had room left over for a built-in microphone for quick in-game chat if you don’t have a headset handy. While one DualSense is included with the console, you’re definitely going to want to pick up a second one for multiplayer games.
Buy the DualSense Wireless Controller on Amazon.
DualSense Charging Station
$29.99
Once you have two DualSense Wireless controllers, keeping them charged and ready to game at all times can be a bit tricky due to the limited number of USB ports on the PS5. The DualSense Charging Station is an elegant, inexpensive solution that can be connected to any outlet in your home, freeing up the console’s USB ports for other devices.
Buy the DualSense Charging Station on Amazon.
Pulse 3D Wireless Headset
$99.99
While it hasn’t received as much attention as the PS5’s graphical upgrades and faster loading times, 3D audio is poised to be another game changer this generation- if you have the right set up for it. With the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset, you can actually hear where in-game movement is coming from, so that if something sneaks up behind you, that should come through the headset almost like someone is in the room with you. This one should definitely make horror games more interesting.
Buy the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset on Amazon.
HD Camera
$59.99
With the next generation of consoles allowing even more options than ever before for capturing screenshots and video, streaming is going to be a bigger part of gaming in the coming years. If you know a gamer who likes to broadcast their PS5 sessions to Twitch or YouTube directly from their console, Sony’s HD Camera provides a crystal clear picture for streaming. And considering that Sony has a long history of coupling cameras with unique game mechanics or peripherals like the PlayStation VR, it’s probably a good idea to get one now before they’re really in-demand in a couple of years.
By the HD Camera on Amazon.
Media Remote
$29.99
As fantastic of a controller as the DualSense is, it’s not really optimized for media playback. Thankfully, the Media Remote offers much better functionality in that department, especially if you’re someone who uses the PS5 to stream movies or TV shows. This handy little peripheral includes buttons for easily navigating menus, rewinding, and fast forwarding. A few other buttons even go directly to some of the most popular streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix. While not necessary for every PS5 user, it’s definitely a useful gadget to have on hand.
Buy the Media Remote on Amazon.
WD My Passport 4TB Portable Hard Drive
$89.99
All PS5 games must be played off of its lightning fast internal SSD. Unfortunately, that 1 TB SSD only really comes with about 665 GB of usable storage out of the box, which means fairly small library of PS4 and PS5 games can fill it up fast. Sony has promised a solution to this issue down the line, although external SSDs fast enough to meet the PS5’s specifications aren’t yet available. In the meantime, a good old-fashioned mechanical external hard drive is a really good idea if you plan to play PS4 games on your next-gen console. Backwards compatible games can be played directly from the external drive, and they still benefit from the PS5’s increased resolution.
Buy the 4TB Portable Hard Drive on Amazon.
Demon’s Souls
$69.99
The original Demon’s Souls on the PS3 has always been well regarded, but it’s also a little janky and hasn’t aged particularly well. Fortunately, the PS5’s biggest launch title has solved those issues with an absolutely stunning remake that cranks the graphics up to 11 while adding several quality of life improvements that make the classic feel as smooth as any modern title. Plus, new weapons, armors, and rings offer surprises even for returning players who explored all of the original’s secrets.
Just like the original, the PS5 version of Demon’s Souls is a difficult game, but it’s oh so satisfying once you’ve finally conquered all of the game’s tough hulking bosses. This game is a must-buy for those who aren’t easily frustrated.
Buy Demon’s Souls for PS5 on Amazon.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
$49.99
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales isn’t quite a full-fledged sequel to Insomniac’s acclaimed 2018 Spider-Man game, but it’s still a fantastic follow-up. The new focus on Miles Morales, who was introduced in the comics less than a decade ago, is a fun way to explore a younger Spider-Man growing into his powers. That’s something that’s always been an integral part of the character but the first game ignored due to its focus on an older, more experienced Peter Parker. The switch in protagonists also means you’ll get to check out some of Miles’ (arguably) cooler powers like electric shocks and temporary invisibility. It’s the ideal gift for any superhero fan.
Buy Miles Morales for PS5 on Amazon.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
$59.99
Most of the PS5 launch hype has been focused on Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but don’t sleep on Sackboy. Unlike the 2.5D creation-focused LittleBigPlanet series that the adorable little mascot hails from, Sackboy is a full-fledged 3D platformer featuring tight controls, surprising power ups, and an incredibly charming story. Sackboy is a lovely throwback to the lighter platformers that used to accompany console launches, and it may end up being the most underrated game of the year.
Buy Sackboy: A Big Adventure for PS5 on Amazon.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
$59.99
For years now, the Assassin’s Creed series has been pumping out absolutely massive adventure games where players can live out their historical fantasies. The first next-gen installment, Valhalla, is a fantastic exploration of Viking history and culture in the ninth century, effectively mixing some of the best combat and stealth features of prior games in the series with violent battles for control of Medieval England.
But let’s be real here: the biggest selling point is the graphics. Valhalla’s open-world looks absolutely stunning in full 4K on the PS5.
Buy Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on Amazon.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
$69.99
Call of Duty games are a reliable choice for those who enjoy multiplayer gaming. While the series has had its ups and downs, this year’s offering features a solid selection of multiplayer maps and a chaotic new 40-player mode called Fireteam. The crowd-pleasing Zombies mode also makes a return and looks better than ever on next-gen consoles. If that isn’t enough, Black Ops Cold War features one of the best Call of Duty campaigns in years, even if it doesn’t have the staying power of the multiplayer modes.
Buy Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on Amazon.
Cyberpunk 2077
$59.99
Arguably the most anticipated game of 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 will finally hit shelves in December. This sci-fi RPG takes place in a massive open-world in the distant future where bio-organic implants are the norm and tech-enhanced crime gangs rule the streets. It also features Keanu Reeves in a supporting role in case you’re wondering if this game takes any cues from The Matrix. If you enjoyed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you’ll definitely want to pick up CD PROJEKT RED’s latest.
Buy Cyberpunk 2077 on Amazon.

I was tagged by @autodiscothings, thank you!
1. How many works in progress do you have?

Yes I do!
3. Do you prefer paper books or ebooks?
I like paperbooks for the quick “wait, what was that name again?” function and how they always fall open on my favorite parts. But I love ebooks for their portability, the font-size adjustments, the background coloring, the search function and how I have 700 books with me on my phone at all times.
4. When did you start writing?
I know that I wrote horse-stories on a mechanical typewriter when I was 12 or 13 maybe? School essays were easy too. Did some blogging after 2000. But I really started writing in 2012 at 43 when I wrote my first porn.
5. Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with?
No one in carbon space around me as of yet. But I love talking with people online about writing and sharing works. And Readers who comment are just the best.
6. Where is your favorite place to write?
Somewhere where nobody bothers me. Those places are rare.
7. Favorite book as a child?
Do you know how long ago that was? I know I read Enid Blyton a lot and pretty much every book with horses I could get my hands on. I know I read through the horse section at our city library in its entirety. Then the fantasy section. I think I moved to YA then, back then those books, at least here in Germany, were mostly books about the sexual awakening of young women.
8. Writing for fun or publication?
Both. That’s the hope/idea/promise to myself at least.
9. Have you taken any writing classes?
Not really. Creative writing was not something I could take at school and I went on to study environmental engineering so that doesn’t have much of writing classes either. But I have used every free resource I can find, namely and highly recommending here the Brandon Sanderson writing classes on youtube: [Class2012], [Class2013], [Class 2014], [Class2015], [Class2016].
10. What inspired you to write?
I recently asked myself that when I was asked if writing is even fun for me. I can whine a lot about writing. But I’m still so glad to have discovered that this is a thing I can do and that people like reading it and that my interpretation of a character can give another person something to think about. That’s pretty cool!
Feedback. Without those reviews and comments on my stuff, I would have given up long ago. Hell, I wouldn’t even have started, the first thing I wrote was supposed to be a one-shot and now it’s at 250k words.
I think, back when I started, the inspiration was “I can do this better.” So I guess my reason for writing is spite.
I’m tagging: @threewhiskeylunch @hollyand-writes @aban-asaara @vorchagirl @mordinette and @tarysande. I want to hear if you have original fiction in the works!

List of 5 World's most expensive books
Tumblr media
I have something a little bit different for you today. A mix of culture money and some world records you guessed it. I am talking about the world's most expensive books that have ever existed. For a book to be worth several millions of dollars. It needs to be written by a famous author. Who has a controversial or highly important subject and is a few hundred years old. Books get better and more expensive with age. I can’t pinpoint just one book that is the most important or relevant because there are so many. However, there are a few manuscripts that shaped our modern world. They are now worth quite a lot of money and can be found in the biggest and most important libraries. Precious Books:
Tumblr media
The list that I do have today is indeed the most precious book history is kept safe and hopefully. Since some books are very old their state is quite fragile and the ink possibly fades out in some areas. That’s why it's so important to keep them in extremely good and safe conditions. So future generations will have a piece of history to look upon. Technology can help us preserve the book for years and years as a digital copy. But that takes away the whole feeling of a book. The texture and the smell holding a book in your hand. Flipping through the pages and making notes will always be the ultimate sensorial experience. Our children will probably not experience. IPads and Kindles are great tools for minimalist lovers’ digital nomads and our environment. But we have to admit that a physical book can be utterly luxurious and special. Let’s see which are the most expensive books in the world? Who are the proud authors and why they cost so much money? 1. Book of Mormon Joseph Smith 35 million $:
Tumblr media
The first book on the list that I brought you the biggest and most expensive book that was ever sold. This book is highly controversial but even more than the book the religion it depicts and the people that follow it are believed to be a part of a secret world-leading organization. Although Mormons are viewed as the Illuminati of the modern world they actually believe in Jesus Christ and are much attached when it comes to this book. It was first published in 1830 and has been traveling quite a lot. Since then last year in 2017 the remaining manuscript was bought by the Church of Latter-day Saints for thirty-five million dollars. Making this book the most expensive they paid that much for the manuscript. Not because it's old or famous but because it's written by their founder Joseph Smith. He wrote the book after a revelation he had when he was 17 years old and with divine guidance. 2. Leonardo da Vinci Codex Leicester 30.8 million $
Tumblr media
It was first named codex hammer but later changed with its first owner's name Thomas Koch Earl of leister who purchased it in 1719. Da Vinci was a genius and the manuscript is also one of his most desired papers. The codex provides a unique look into the brilliant mind of renowned Renaissance artist mastermind scientist and inventor. As well as an exceptional illustration of the link between art and science and the creativity of the scientific process as Leonardo thought of it. Handwritten with notes and observations the manuscript contains info regarding astronomy physics and chemistry all in Italian. The 18 pages folded in half and written on both sides were, in fact, one at an auction in New York City by another great mind in businessman Bill Gates. He bought it for thirty point eight million dollars. He was not the richest man just from Microsoft while he had the Codex. Bill scanned the pages and turned them into a screensaver and wallpapers for the Windows 95 Edition. 3. ST. Cuthbert Gospel 14.3 million $:
Tumblr media
If the Gutenberg Bible was once one of the most important books ever printed there is one more religious piece on this list. The Holy Bible was written by the 12th disciples of Jesus and upon that some of them wrote other Gospels that were later discovered. Even Judas has written a gospel but the church does not recognize it nor the one written of Mary Magdalene. Dates back to the eighth century and is a small pocket size containing some parts of a notorious Gospel of John one of the most beloved disciples of Jesus. What makes this tiny book so expensive is the fact that it's the most well-capped book of its kind from that age and it's written in Latin. It has survived a lot of travels and Viking invasions and 1,500 years later it was bought by the British Library for fourteen point three million dollars and it will be on public display as of 2018. 4. Rothschild prayer book 13.4 million$: Moving on with a great book that belonged to an even greater family the Roth shield prayer book. It dates back from the late 15th century and it's full of amazing illuminated details on the sides of the pages. The opening pages show a beautiful Requiem Mass, a mass used for the dead. While the rest of the books 67 pages contain different illustrations made by the most renowned Renaissance Flemish artists.
Tumblr media
The book is a masterpiece with splendid paintings and rich details which some say has great value for any art and history lover. Some of the famous illustrations depict Mary Magdalene of the famous prostitute that some say carried Jesus Christ's children. The book was stolen from Lewis Nathanael von Rath shield in 1938 and purchased later by an Australian businessman for thirteen point four million dollars. Which makes this manuscript the most expensive. John James Audubon the birds of America 11.5 million$: This time some subjects like biology or plants need good and realistic drawings. Where all the details can be seen and explained and since portable cameras were invented pretty late. Illustrations were the most accurate way of understanding and learning the birds of America by painter and naturalist John James Audubon. This is a collection of 435 hand-colored life-sized prints and includes a series of now-extinct species of birds from the US dating from 1827. There are only 119 complete copies known to the world and some of them were sold for millions of dollars. So far three of them were sold for 7.9 million dollars one for eight point eight million dollars and the last one for eleven point five million dollars. The drawings are so amazing and detailed they were even used for fabric painting in the UK. Conclusion: People who love history and books are also known for the value and importance of books. These are some of the world's most expensive books list. Later on, I will share another list of the rest of the expensive book. If is there any other books in your knowledge please share it in the comment box. Read the full article
