A reactionary comic about rereading a fic that I recently recommended that was way darker than I remembered, lol. I still love it for how they pretty much drive each other crazy, but that word choice and the consent issues... *cringes* At least there are valid warnings beforehand, and the first fic was pretty PG. Sorry. *laughs sheepishly*

I forget how much of a little asshole Giorno is at the start of Vento Aureo. My friend watched the beginning and told me she didn't really like Giorno because he was "kind of a dick" and I see why. I guess it's like Josuke being a delinquent and Jotaro getting into fights and stuff

What is your favourite thing about Billie Lurk?
(Answers are obvious possibly but i love when people talk about her👍)
thanks for the ask!! YEAH ME TOO I love when people talk about Billie! I can't say I have a favourite thing specifically, but I can explain why she's my fav. apologies for not taking this qn literally, but -
short answer: she’s really cool
& you can stop reading there, or, for the maybe 2 mutuals who might have time to read this my thoughts on her as a character, her meta, and her character as raw potential...
long answer:
i considered making this entire thing a gush so you could read a gush about Billie. but, part of what draws me to her is that she’s not always well written, and in fandom she’s underrated for a literal protagonist.
since you ask...
billie is a cool character
when I played Dh2 (hadn't played Dh1), I was excited to see a black woman with disabilities who was captaining a massive ship by herself. wow.
then I discovered Billie’s backstory with Deirdre, the way she responded to that, then having to survive while living on the run, and her bisexuality. as well as her history with daud & delilah. fascinating!
she’s an outsider who has so much to lose, and knows what it's like to lose everything - having lost everything not once but three times - but nevertheless speaks truth to power. she's so brave! she went and helped Emily & Corvo and she must have known they might kill her! plus, she’s smart, she’s funny, she gets shit done, she’s gorgeous.
but... the meta
mild critique of fandom & arkane incoming.
skip this bit if you want - you've been warned twice now - jump to tired Hayao Miyazaki and read from there if you'd like my thoughts on writing her.
i thought Death of the Outsider was going to be amazing and then... well. *sad trombone* i've written about that before so i won't keep banging on. i figured others must be disappointed too, so I joined a few fandom spaces in hopes of finding camaraderie.
most people with complaints about DotO didn’t like how the Outsider and Daud were handled. which is valid & I agree. but it seemed like most paid no attention to Billie; when people talk about her it’s with respect to Daud, as opposed to in her own right. you could argue for fandom misogyny because people don’t talk about adult Emily Kaldwin that much either, but in Billie's case, it’s misogynoir (compare & contrast with the popularity of thomas, particularly the popularity of thomas portrayed as a white man for no particular reason that i've been able to discern - i keep asking around, is it in the books???).
i think this is a LOT better now than it used to be, which is fantastic. or perhaps i have found the correct echo-chamber? ha.
ultimately, The Fandom is a fraction of the entire picture, and not even the important bit since The Fandom is not who these games are made for. you can't make money relying on only your hardcore fans even if all of them spent a fortune on merch, this is true for any AAA game.
while it's true that Billie is underrated from a fandom perspective - but Billie as an underwritten protagonist is squarely Arkane’s fault.
it was reasonable when she was a side character - the lack of info in Dh2 makes perfect sense (if anything there was more lore in Dh2 which is kind of wild)-
- but as a protagonist in Death of the Outsider?
.... there’s lousy writing, and there’s whatever is going on with Billie Lurk, a black woman who mostly exists as a foil or saviour for light-skinned characters. In her own game there’s barely any of her own lore except where it's relevant to saving two dudes.
lore hints at, but barely touches on what race means in the Dh universe (xenophobia is stronger in Dh1; separate essay i guess), but Arkane has patted themselves on the back for portraying non-white characters, which feels like the same thing as the aesthetic of diversity we're seeing in advertising currently because it’s in marketing trend guides. it's self-congratulatory and it's a missed opportunity for deeper storytelling.
you can see an example of diversity at its most shallow in the way that Billie’s written: there’s little engagement with her as an entire person with history & wants & preferences, and the world she walks through in that game feels like it has nothing to do with her. you could make a case for alienation as a theme, but then, how do you handle the titular premise of 'Dishonored' without ever letting Billie make changes in an environment without a chaos system? it's disappointing from that angle too.
in my opinion, whatever it's worth, it was an accident Arkane created such an awesome character - they needed someone to betray daud. congrats billie.
Tumblr media
all this said, it makes her an underdog as far as characters to enjoy & create art & stories for. it's nice to find so many like-minded, switched on people! <3
billie's character potential
she’s got a wealth of unexplored lore, being deeply intertwined with both Karnaca & Dunwall’s fates & criminal underbellies, as well as her connections to the witches & whalers, and three Empresses.
she’s lived a few distinct lifetimes and in the games we get to meet her at two peaks (KoD & DotO) & a low (Dh2 as Meagan).
her voice is very distinct, her dry & often dark humour is entertaining & fun to write. her perspective is really interesting - she’s had the widest variety of void-powers of anyone canonically, and she’s also lived through the highest highs and lowest lows.
she's got everything going for her :) i couldn't really pick a fav thing!
#i assume my followers are cool enough to let me give a brief measured critique on fandom trends and DotO#thanks for the anon question!! what fun!#i love billie lurk <333#jumped on the opportunity to rant n rave#what part of billie isn't my fav! (im a guy who likes the bad stuff too. mmm interesting meta)#trying to be not unfair or mean- i'm not targeting anyone but rather trends. and it's ok to be disappointed with something you love#fuck it. make it part of the appeal! her writing sucks! plenty of room for me & other creators!#its easier for me to indulge my billie brainworms when it sorta feels like she's not getting as much love as she deserves#you know? i want stories where her history is explored and her agency is important so i guess i'll roll up my sleeves#tumblr is a terrible place for this sort of critique IMO- lots of nuanceless empathy-free guilt-trip-ish rhetoric#so i hope i avoided that. but not so much that i seem forgiving.#that said i'm not tagging this one with fandom tags! no thank you.#i am blaming arkane yes. but that is also not without games industry context#i could complain about amateurish writing but that also never happens in a vacuum. industry problem(s) for sure.#people love to blame writers for things#and yeah a couple really fucking good writers can push a boulder uphill#but its usually a company problem#hire lots of diverse people in your company. give them authority and respect and reasonable workloads. and no crunch.#ah fuck this is a separate essay in tags. again#THIS WAS A SIMPLE QUESTION#*clutches head in hands*#uh if you're still reading at this point im SO sorry and thank you and i love you

so i went to reblog some fanart earlier and started to tag it #oh this is. incredible actually, and then paused and thought, @‍self why the 'actually.' what is that adverb conveying. and i contemplated it for a bit, and finally concluded: well, shit. it's reflexive deprecation.
the thing is, deprecation is my starting position pretty much always, and that's a problem in itself, but mostly my problem; but when you're talking abt somebody else's work, and you start backing defensively away from imagined negativity before anyone's even actually voiced any? you may think you're playing bodyguard, but in reality you're the vanguard of the assault, opening a wedge for enemy forces to strike.
i was talking a couple of weeks ago abt seeing ppl tag that kristin sue lucas name-multiplied-by-one post with tags like 'this is art To Me' vel sim., and honestly i think it's a similar sort of reflex—i think exposure to the tumblr vernacular often leads people (very much including me!) to produce turns of phrase like this, that ultimately serve to convey roughly
'i, a clever girlblogger,¹ am, yeah, engaging with this frivolous hai pollai²-coded material; but my relationship to it, unlike that of most she-ple, is Intellectual and Analytical and Examined! and to make that clear, i'll be dropping in these little verbal particles from time to time, in order to distinguish my own, elevated examination of the subject from the state of risible naivete³ i'm implicitly ascribing to the other, more ordinary audience members i'm conjuring up only to instantly put down—but like, it's fine, i'm a free-and-easy girlblogger(TM), so you can't think i'd ever deliberately propagate establishmentarian prejudices! never mind the effect my rhetoric might subconsciously be having, on me or on anyone else…'
and i think this framing is worth squinting at, and worth attempting to excise from one's speech and from one's mindset, because when you get right down to it? it's just yet another insidious manifestation of respectability politics, that's gotten people to adopt it via the cuckoo-chick strategy of positioning itself as cutesy tumblr idiolect.
and like, circling back around to that fanart i mentioned at the outset: yeah, the tag did feel weirdly prosodically truncated to me without that 'actually'! but this way, if the artist ends up seeing my discussion of their work in their notes, they won't be getting slapped in the face with a wet dead fish first, so like. what's more important, you know?
⸻ ¹ ""(gender neutral)"" ² https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoi_polloi in the feminine, if i haven't totally fumbled my declensions… ³ phrasing nicked from a comment of @‍proudheron's.
#anyway like. this for sure isn't the definitive post abt this#and really what i'm getting at is just another facet of 'self-deprecation isn't usually actually separable from disparaging others'#but i do think there's a particular subtle flavor of it here that's worth sticking under the microscope in its own right#for those of us who may have breathed it in without noticing‚ and now be spreading it‚ again without noticing‚ in our turn#i mean. obvs also extremely possible i just *think* i've put my finger on something important bc it's late!#but like. imagine tagging‚ idk‚ the winged victory or sth with 'this is art. to me'#it would be SUCH a weird rhetorical move! but consider: it's *always* a weird rhetorical move‚ actually.#bc fundamentally it's a speech pattern that's seeking affirmation of yr own taste/authority/status as Critic#at the expense of the thing you've evaluated—#like‚ you're going 'i think this is neat!! (but that might just be me 😔)'#and then other girlbloggers are supposed to be like 'yeah no i totally see what you mean!!!' and affirm you! but the thing is—#the '(but that might just be me 😔)' part doesn't just undercut yr discernment‚ it undercuts the praise *predicated* on yr discernment#so it's like. you're dissing yourself in a way that's supposed to earn you affirmation‚ which. is fucked up actually‚ lol :)#but—it's one thing when you do it to yourself; when you incorporate it into the foundations of yr compliment#you've actually totally undermined that compliment and rendered it an insult#(not to mention undermined the idea that the thing might have merit in itself‚ beyond yr authority to bestow or withhold—#like. if you're speaking in terms of what's good/deep/Art/&c To You? you've effectively already ceded the main field of universality#and retreated to defend only yr own walled garden—and implied you'll cede even that small ground if it's disputed)#so like. in the context of yr social relationship with yr followers‚ those sorts of qualifiers are affirmation-seeking moves—#though like. also ones that reinforce yr rhetorical passive-victim positionality‚ in a way you shd perhaps consider *not* reinforcing—#but in the context of yr interaction with an OP? they're negging.#and i just think like. i get it and i'm @-ing myself here as much as anyone else! but it's not‚ like‚ a healed-world way to behave. lol.#so like. consider: tagging things 'art' without the cutesy little qualifiers. praising things without the hedging.#i'm not at all good at that but. i'm going to try.#metatumbling#language#the psyche#'close readings no one needed for 300‚ alex'#(extremely tempted to just scrap this writeup tbh but like. the thinking was worth doing‚ so a record of it is worth keeping)

"... And once I stole something." "What did you steal?" Susan did not look very guilty. "It was a puppy belonging to the woman next door--when I lived with Camilla. The people used to go away for days and leave it without anything to eat. And at last I couldn't bear it, so I burgled their back yard at midnight. I was about twelve. And first Camilla scolded me like mad, and then she became an enthusiastic accessory after the fact, and we went out hand in hand with the puppy in a basket, and walked about four miles in the middle of the night, and knocked up some friends of hers who were all fast asleep and made them accessories too. They were just moving into the country, so they were frightfully pleased, because they were meaning to get a dog, but they couldn't really afford to buy one." "After that," said Anthony, "of course the whole thing's off. My heart is broken--" he clutched it-- "but I can never, never, never marry a puppy-snatcher."

My brain is back on the exact same bullshit that led me to declare Soul Society should have a train, but I suddenly, desperately need to know if Shin'ou students have a winter uniform.
I am honestly split six different ways over this. First of all, is there a standard-issue over-garment of some sort that is permitted when it's cold out? The uniforms have 3/4 sleeves for Pete's sake, and what could be more picturesque than your little students sashaying around campus in sort of matching cloaks?
As far as I know, there were two forms of outerwear in the Edo era: the haori and the hanten. The haori is lighter, longer, and worn by generally fancier people (and originally only men). The hanten is padded and worn by the working class. According to Wikipedia, in the 1910s, a unisex overgarment called a shosei haori became popular among students, but this was also associated with a movement towards western clothing, so I can't really imagine this trend hitting Soul Society*. On the other hand, this is the same period of time that female students started wearing hakama, although they would do so in the high-waisted style, whereas female Shin'ou students wear male-style hakama. (Complete aside, but I also found a reference to a garment called a tombi coat, popular in the early 1900s, that was very Sherlock Holmes-esque, and anyway, I feel in my heart that Byakuya own wore one of these in his delinquent era)
*[(1)There's a picture of a young man dressed as a shosei about 1/3 of the way down this page. (1) the section of this page labeled "Mixing of Japanese and Western fashion" says shosei haori were also worn over western suits. (3) Wikipedia claims they were padded, but I didn't find reference to that elsewhere.]
Back to the topic at hand. I feel like Shin'ou would be more inclined toward haori over hanten, because they want to cultivate an air of culture and exclusivity over practicality (and also they don't want to make it seem like the classrooms aren't adequately heated, which they are not). Does everyone get the same color, or it gender-split again? It might look kind of nice to have a darker shade of blue for the boys and maroon for the girls. They could also be the same color with different color linings, although...brown? I guess? Black or white are both right out, since those are Court Guard colors. Shin'ou surely has a seal. Big seal on the back? ::nods:: Big seal on the back.
The other option, of course, is that no, there is no standardized coat. One possibility is that coats are simply not allowed. Another is that you can wear your own outer garment, at least when you're walking around outside of class. This has the nice advantage of allowing the upper class students to display their wealth and also be warm, since Soul Society very rarely lets an opportunity for class discrimination to go by.
(Does Shin'ou have clubs??? Is it possible that there are haori associated with particular clubs, you know, like a varsity jacket? That would slap. Could they at least have patches?)
As far as we know, actual shinigami don't seem to have any sort of official cold weather gear. There is the time that the leadership of Squads 5 and 10 went up on the roof to watch fireworks together-- they all seem to be be wearing something on the spectrum between scarf and shawl; Matsumoto's is furry because she has taste.
Tumblr media
On one hand, this might lend credence to the idea of bring-your-own-coat, but maybe not? Do people in the ghost military have more or less dress-flexibility than students (keeping in mind that even the barkeepers in this town wear shihakushou). Shinigami also seem to be generally free to accessorize, which we don't see much of among students.
Maybe the students just wear scarves? Soul Society seems pretty pro-scarf, generally.
I hope you weren't expecting a conclusion to this post, because I don't have one, and my final answer is going to have more to do with whether I decide I want Renji to be wearing a coat in the fanfic that I am working on or if I want him to suffer, but if anyone else has insights or opinions on this topic, I would love to hear them.

Say what you will about Bungo Stray Dogs but the fact is that it has inspired a good number of an entire generation to pick up 1800s to 1900s great literature from Japan, North America, and Europe and i think that's very cool of it really
#and if not to actually read to books then to make them aware of their existence#and if you're like me to spiral on a tangent to see what other cool books not as well-teached countries have#honestly you guys the little ive managed to read among the bsd authors has been fascinating#the postwar mentality and the struggles of those who didnt have religion to fall back on as a center of morality and meaning#thats some GOOD stuff to dig into#of course you'll find that anywhere but each literary period has its own vibe#usually that vibe is oversimplified tbh...esp considering each period even questioned their own themes and moods and the liie#*like#im hoping asagiri also delves into south american and African literature as well as other parts of asia/middle east...#as they have pretty cool things as well...and also a really different postwar perspective to look at it from#mainly we're sort of seeing lit from what we could consider winners? of war (oversimplification i know)#which is amazing and all because of the schools of thought that pop up...#but it would be neat to see the schools of thought that pop up from the literary greats of the countries that were victimized in the war#esp because the victim/victor distinction is never as clear cut as it looks#but im rambling again oops....#this is actually a literature appreciation post disguised as a bsd appreciation post heh...#bsd#bungo stray dogs#bungou stray dogs#bsd musings#i havent mentioned australian lit....forgive me...i actually dont know if ive read any classic authors from there#though the modern authors from australia ive read are very good#spitting nonsense#rambling in the tags sorry#edit: or maybe dont go into other country lits cause....well it depends on how its handled really...#it would be cool but at the same time.....

Rules: Tag 10 people you want to get to know better
Tagged by @burningvelvet. Thank you for inviting me to the tag game! :)
Relationship Status: Currently single and I'm working on trying to build up my life so I can date.
Favorite Color: To wear is red though I also really like purple. I have more purple accessories but I wear most colors. I have many colorful outfits.
Song Stuck In My Head: Love by Lana Del Rey but there are others that can play on command in my head if I hear the title/the band.
ABBA, Meg & Dia, Emilie Autumn, Flyleaf, Avril Lavigne and Skillet are some artists that I have looping in my head often.
Last Song I Listened To: Cheater, Cheater by Joey and Rory (my spotify was on shuffle)
I like country probably more than people would expect but I am more of a pop/dance queen though. I have made Eurovision playlists in the past.
Three Favorite Foods: Pears, Potatoes (in many forms), and Greek salads or wraps. But I love most food in general. I'm not a super picky eater. I like to cook and make baked goods. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
Last Thing(s) I Googled: Pharmacy hours because I had to pick up more medication.
I also looked up an actor's age because my sister and I were trying to figure out how old he was (she was right or close- I thought he was younger- he's on one of my mom's shows). I'm usually the go to googler for my family, especially when they ask about actors or actresses in movies and tv shows we watch.
Links to my college's website, goodreads, storygraph, youtube and list challenges. I'm making more reading lists on list challenges (again).
Sorry it's nothing too interesting lately. My YouTube searches are probably more interesting but only marginally so. I'm not at school or working on any research projects currently so my searches are very basic right now.
Dream Trip: Japan. I'd like to go with close friends and/or family members though since it would be a big deal to go that far. I've been following a japan travel vlog by a woman who lives there. She shows all kinds of cafes and other fun places to go. You can watch/follow her vlog here: https://www.youtube.com/@its_time_to_travel
I'd love to be able to go to some of the places she's featured on her blog. It would be the trip of a lifetime! I'd be sure to try to learn some Japanese first too since I'm visiting their country and that seems polite to do. I know a few random words but can't read or write anything or even hold a conversation.
If I can't go to Japan, I'd love to go back to either Germany or England, but to the parts I didn't visit since there are tons of places in both those countries I've never been too. I really want to go to Haworth (The Bronte Sister's hometown), since I'm a Bronte fan and I've focused some of my grad studies on their works.
This is a tag post so I'm tagging:
@paperbackpropensity, @thatwritererinoriordan, @oh2e, @yeahwellshithappens, @autumnbell32, @writingf3, @windermerepoets13, @melusinah, @girlonedge and whoever else wants to do this! :)
#there's a lot of people I wanted to talk to on here to see if we'd be better friends but I usually don't want to bother people#feel free to answer if we're mutuals too#tags#tag game#recently (within the last six months) realized I'm probably a lesbian not bi so that happened still single AF though#still want to extend support to any and all of my bisexual friends since I believe in solidarity#being brutally honest not sure if I'd make anyone a good girlfriend yet since I have some personal stuff to sort out#BUT I was hoping to start dating before the end of the year- maybe in the summer or fall depending on how much I can do before then#red and purple#music#my music taste may be a little unexpected#pears#potatoes#greek salad#I'm sorry my searches are so boring lately#they're usually more literary and probably more interesting#lots of fact checking of various author's biographies and such#I meant what I said about Japan#but I might not be allowed to go there if my medicine is illegal there#I can't go to some countries because my medications for bipolar are illegal in some countries (though I'm switching medications soon)#the flight to Japan is almost a day from where I live too which is a lot but it would be worth it#so many of her travel videos are cool- there are so many cute cafes and fun little places to go in Japan that I saw on her vlog#if they don't allow my medicine I can't go but I know I'm allowed to travel to England so I'll just go back instead when I have money#I have so much saving up to do fr#I could talk about dream travel destinations forever tbh

this man gets it
#personal#it basically already says it right there: business stability and their own survival. that's what the council is for#it was initially started kind of by vincent a little bit because he was doing gigs for different fixers all over town and just#their stupid bickering with one another and general sense of hostility he sensed between them made him realize that#none of them would survive the winter like that. too busy fighting each other like what gangs and corporations were also doing#the council is supposed to sort of hold the intricate network of fixers / mercs / clients in night city together#by keeping eyes on every other party involved. so mainly gangs and corps. report any changes in activity and act accordingly#this also to prioritize safety of civilians because that's part of vincent's initial idea and mainly vitali is trying to like#keep that one of the core values of the council#but mainly just to maintain the balance i guess. this is a city that's already hanging on by a thread#so anything that can be done to at least make sure business can continue as usual would be highly beneficial for fixers#but also most of them are mostly in it for themselves and just for like. that part. making sure they can keep their business going#and the infighting is still there as well. you kinda have to look at it as like the pirate council in pirates of the caribbean#and the only reason rogue is kind of their leader a little bit is because everyone voted for themself but vitali decided to vote for rogue#which gave her two votes. and now she's in charge. but also out of all of them she has the most authority and knows what she's doing#anyway hi yes rambling again did you miss my blorboposting. wait until you get to see my extended night city map

Court of the Undying Seasons
NA high fantasy
demigirl volunteers to be taken by the vampires instead of her friend intending to kill them for revenge, but quickly learns that’ll be impossible unless she becomes one
she has to get through her training to become a vampire or live as a human thrall, and quickly gets swept up in their world - and discovers a string of murders that could have dire consequences for them all
#Court of the Undying Seasons#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#ok i was kinda hoping this would be more me than most things in its genre niche....but is just kinda is that#why is the main couple a thing? what is the attraction? i feel like I skipped half a book. you’re gonna kill him right#just really did not get that at all lmao. ur usual dark fantasy romance i gues#it’s kind of pitched as ‘she wants to kill vamps!!!’ but like. she immediately learns that’ll be too hard and basically forgets about it lo#i feel like the courts being named after colours reads. well you know it reads like the stereotype of YA with different factions to choose#but I guess I get that if they were called by their alt names it would have been a lot of confusing info to keep track of#the mc being a demigirl is pretty subtle#if you’re looking for it you can see the trans coding#but if you weren’t I feel like it might just read as girl who’s slightly uncomfortable with her appearance…#which is fine I guess. but just so you know if you're picking it up for that#also picked it up for ace side characters but like…. it’s not rly like the authors other books#there’s vague mentions but tbqh I’ve forgotten who is supposed to be ace#(probably because I read like 6 other books between starting and finishing this)#also genderfluid side character who is like. treated as two different people when they’re girl or boy version?#which is sort of treated as a vampire thing but i thought it felt odd#anyway all in all not entirely bad just not for me at all lol

last smile in sunder city final thoughts: as i read, i found that i was scouring the entire book with a great deal more scrutiny than i treat fiction with relation to authorship most of the time, trying to pin down what part of it best illustrates whatever the author got out of that great big show we both won’t shut up about, but the conclusion i ultimately drew was that it is much less ‘some thesis within the content of the novel’ and more ‘the fact that the novel exists.’ what the author got out of sails was this is so great i wish i could do something like this. HANG ON -
the author  got the writing bug, and that’s what the book is about. of course there is nothing spectacular about creatives from one medium trying their hand at another with the assurance that they’ve got a leg up simply by being established already in another field, and there are as many actors-in-bands and industry memoirs and celebrity-thriller-writer collabs as there are people to do those things, but still i think there’s a gulf, large or small, between this and ‘fantasy novel written by that guy on twitter who was in that pirate show and who is best known for being really into muppet treasure island.’
sunder city lives in that gulf comfortably. the inexpert ardentness with which it throws itself, heedless, into the yawning and toothy chasm of fantasy readers says as much. the literary criticism tool called “death of the author” has been mangled past recognition online, but neither its pop usage nor its academic usage appeal to me here. maybe i would have different takeaways if i wasn’t already familiar with the author’s acting work, but for me, sunder city is less about the fact that people might read it and more about the fact that someone wanted very badly to try and write it. to try something new. to scratch the itch. if nothing else, it is successful as a sign of what storytelling is: something that happens to you, like puberty, or lycanthropy. you catch it somewhere and start sneezing plot all over the place. and for that alone, whatever problems i may have stylistically with it, this is a successful book.
