this man gets it
#personal#it basically already says it right there: business stability and their own survival. that's what the council is for#it was initially started kind of by vincent a little bit because he was doing gigs for different fixers all over town and just#their stupid bickering with one another and general sense of hostility he sensed between them made him realize that#none of them would survive the winter like that. too busy fighting each other like what gangs and corporations were also doing#the council is supposed to sort of hold the intricate network of fixers / mercs / clients in night city together#by keeping eyes on every other party involved. so mainly gangs and corps. report any changes in activity and act accordingly#this also to prioritize safety of civilians because that's part of vincent's initial idea and mainly vitali is trying to like#keep that one of the core values of the council#but mainly just to maintain the balance i guess. this is a city that's already hanging on by a thread#so anything that can be done to at least make sure business can continue as usual would be highly beneficial for fixers#but also most of them are mostly in it for themselves and just for like. that part. making sure they can keep their business going#and the infighting is still there as well. you kinda have to look at it as like the pirate council in pirates of the caribbean#and the only reason rogue is kind of their leader a little bit is because everyone voted for themself but vitali decided to vote for rogue#which gave her two votes. and now she's in charge. but also out of all of them she has the most authority and knows what she's doing#anyway hi yes rambling again did you miss my blorboposting. wait until you get to see my extended night city map

Talking a bit about Kallen's story arc
I came across a comment on Reddit not long ago (in case you don't know, it's a nest of C.C. fanboys) saying that Kallen was overrated since she had nothing beyond her relationship with Lelouch and the episode with her mom. It is not the first time I have read an opinion like that, although, fortunately, it is not very frequent.
Actually, Kallen does have a character arc. It's just that it's developed in a very subtle way. And by that I mean that I didn't realize what it was the second or third time I watched Code Geass, but much later. This is because the series doesn't tell you directly, they show it to you. I understood it better after reading Kallen's poem. Everything she says there is in the series. But they don't explain it to you with words like in the poem. The same thing happened to me with Euphemia's little story arc (yes, she has one of her own).
Tumblr media
At its core, Kallen's story arc is about transitioning from a reckless and immature girl who finds herself adrift to a selfless heroine with a purpose that transcends her. It is a coming-age story in all its definition. In that sense, it is essentially similar to the Lelouch arc as the rebellion brings out the best version of themselves. This is compassion, empathy, altruism. It's not very noticeable because Kallen isn't Machiavellian like Lelouch is, although she is just as pragmatic. One of the best samples you have of Kallen's development is in the penultimate episode of the first season.
In the early episodes, Kallen is deeply concerned with protecting her identity to the point that she does not hesitate to take risky actions that include killing others. But, in this penultimate episode, when the members of the Student Council refuse to obey the Black Knights thinking that they would harm them, Kallen unmasks herself before them to calm them down and ask them to trust them. Kallen prioritized the safety of her friends over her secret. The thing is that she had already done it before. By Zero. Kallen comes out of her Guren to ask Suzaku to let Zero go in episode 18 of the first season. She again places more importance on the safety of her leader than her identity. The difference between the two moments is that she calmly makes the decision to reveal herself in episode 24. That was not her last option as it was in episode 18.
Tumblr media
You'd think there wouldn't be any further development for Kallen in season two. But it's not true and, personally and based on Kallen's poem, I like to see her relationship with Lelouch as a temptation for her (temptation in the sense that it can lead her astray). Characters in visual media are often built on two pillars: what they want versus what they need, and up until that point, Kallen hadn't had to choose because the choice was so clear. That is, she had not faced a challenge. By the end, however, she must choose between the boy she loves and doing the right thing, and though Lelouch helps her choose the latter by keeping quiet about his feelings, Kallen decides of her own free will to do the right thing and, by extension, embrace her identity, her values and her brother's dream. Not caring that Lelouch has returned the kiss. Also in this second season Kallen is consolidated as the best Knightmare pilot of the series. Her most badass moments are here (and there are still people who have the nerve to say that she was relegated to the background; sorry, man, you're talking about C.C.).
I would like in the remote future to both write an individual analysis of Kallen as well as an analysis of her (misconstrued) relationship with Lelouch. On my Code Geass Facebook page I do it in Spanish and I use this space to address the international community. Now I am watching Code Geass again with a good channel of reactions on YouTube (since 2020 I have imposed the tradition of watching Code Geass once a year and with them I will fulfill my purpose for this 2023...) . I will see what new things I will discover now. I discovered what I have just told you on my return visit last year.
Fans only complain about her fanservice, spit on her relationship with Lelouch, accuse her of things she never did, and judge her harshly. They never take Kallen seriously. I want to be the first to do it, if no one with good analytical skills does it.

Tumblr media
It seemed like an eternity until Crocodile finally came back. Your thirst was slowly driving you mad and your thoughts started to circulate around water and Buggys concern. You could hear your captors steps approaching, he took his time, knowing he was in charge of whatever would happen next. “Willing to talk now?”, you can see his dark smile on your right, he is holding a glass of water in his hand and you are willing to do anything just for a sip of it. He realizes your begging eyes, seeming to bathe in your desire. Slowly he removes the gag and you gasp, carefully moving your mouth muscles which have become so painfully stiff being forced in the same position. Crocodile smiles even wider as he sets the glass to your lips, seeing you drink in wild desire.
“There, there…” he gently whispers, his voice making you feel uncomfortable to your inner core. “Where is Buggy? Why did you bring me here?”
Crocodile laughs, taking the glass aside and adjusting his fur coat while still standing over you, his shadow casting on your face. “I told you already - Buggy is fine. More than fine with all the money I paid him to obtain you. And you should know why I brought you here. I have two simple reasons - one is your value and the other is you being the perfect trap for the damn straw hat…!” You have a hard time following him, also not believing the thing he says about Buggy. “You are telling me Buggy sold me. But I don't believe that. He is my captain and he knows I am loyal to him…” “That is what you want to believe…”, Crocodile snarls, taking another deep breath from his cigar, puffing the smoke into your face, causing you to cough.  “But your captain allowed us on board and also gave us the permission to take you with us. You will join me in Alabasta, building up a little syndicate there and becoming an influential advisor to the king…”  He finds the horror and disbelief in your eyes amusing and laughs even more.  “Y/n, I know about your charm and your persuasion skills. I know what happened in Windmill village and how you successfully lead these young revolutionaries to overthrow the city council there. And killing the tax collector…”, he bends over you again, his hook carefully touching your bangs, you shudder. “You are a dangerous and ambitious woman. I need you to join me when I take over Alabasta…”
“So this was your plan? To abduct me from the Buggy pirates to take me with you to Alabasta and then overthrow the king there? Why would you think I would join a low pirate like you?”,  you try to sound threatening but you realize that your voice is shaking.
“Well, what other choice do you have? Waiting for Buggy? He won't come. Waiting for the Straw hat? Even if he comes to rescue you, then I will finally take my revenge on him. Whatever you decide, I will win since you already have lost!”
“Buggy will come for me!”, you scream, lifting your body against the shuckles. You see a dangerous glimmer in Crocodiles eyes as he smiles at you: “Your captain will never ever come for you again. But don't worry, I can be your new lover…!”, he tries to touch your face with his left hand and you quickly move your head to bite him with full power. “Ahhh!”, he yells in agony and gives you a strong plow with the hook on his other hand. For a moment you see stars, the pain rushing through your head to your face, mixing in your mouth with the taste of blood. He immediately gags you again, stepping back into the dark.
“You will eventually follow me, you weak little brat…!”, you can hear him laugh as he leaves the room leaving you alone with your agony.
Hours feel like days and the darkness feels endless on you and your hurting face. The glass of water has only brought you a temporary relief and you soon feel thirsty again as well as hungry. How many hours have you been here? How many of these hours have you been unconscious? And where was Buggy? Why would he sell you to one of the warlords of the sea? Or was it true and he had planned to do this all along? The longer you lay here the more the thoughts are gnawing on you and you start to doubt every single of your actions until now. You think of Luffy and where he might be at this point. Probably also somewhere on the Grand Line, being carefree and hoping you were well. As the hours turn into a slimy thick package you again and again drift into a shallow sleep, having nightmares of Buggy abandoning you and Crocodile taking you to Alabasta.
On another time of these endless naps when you wake up and feel thirst and pain all over your body Crocodile is coming back into the room, without further ado he untags you and opens the shackles on your hand and feet. Too weak to stand up he just offers you half of a glass of water, when holding it to your mouth you have a hard time swallowing being gagged for such a long time. You are in complete shock and unable to defend yourself as he swiftly lifts you up, taking you in his hands and outside of the room. Bright daylight blinds you as you are suddenly on deck of a ship, haven't seen the sun for hours or days and you feel like the sunshine is burning your eyes. “Look, Y/n. Your new home…” you can hear the excitement in Crocodile's voice and you tiredly let your head roll to the side, slowly opening your eyes, giving them time to get used to the sun again. You can see a sandy stretch of a long island in front of you, the yellow desert in stark contrast to the blue bright sky above.
“Alabasta.”, you utter faintly and still hope that all this is just a nightmare to wake up from.

Maybe the May prompt for year of the otp, fantasy/medieval/dark knights of steel au and flower language for dickroy ☆ (I barely see this two any more :()
Not me doing this on the last day of May orz apologies anon my brain is running on Tears of the Kingdom at the moment so I apologise profusely. Went for gen Fantasy/vague Europe mediaeval over Dark Knights of Steel because I haven't been keeping up with it one bit. Having said that - it's like literally just after midnight here so again apologies for how slow I am... Enjoy! This is just fluff.
Year of the OTP Requests
Roy was never quite sure if the Prince actually needed a host of guards. He was skilled in swordplay, that much was clear from days in the training yard. He didn’t need tutors either. At every council meeting he attended, sitting to the left of the King at that grand rectangular table, he spoke eloquently and with an experience and knowledge of time’s past, predicting things still to come. He needed not etiquette training. Half the court was in love with him, and the other half either respected him enough to bow each time he entered the room, or to at the very least, sincerely listen to what he had to say. There was a small slither of those who were resentful - those who believed no-one could genuinely be that confident, that kind, the clever, that strong (that handsome), without some crippling character of physical defect, surely?
Roy knew the answer to their grumblings. Yes, Richard (Dick) did have one very deep, irreconcilable flaw: Roy.
Being the son of the Lord Mayor had its benefits, or so Roy supposed. Access to the castle was nearly always a given, as well as access to the Prince. In certain scenarios.
Dick had a lot of siblings. It made alone time nearly impossible.
Those old romances, songs and tales that Roy’s brother would sing, speaking of illicit meetings in gardens or in back staircases - the kind of tales where Queen’s would take a lover and they would both lose their head over it…
Well, Roy was nothing if not optimistic.
As it so happened, their first kiss was in a back staircase. Dick, two steps up to reach slightly above Roy, kissed him very soundly on the lips, thumb pressed against his chin.
He pulled back as quickly as the lips were touching, Roy following just a little desperately. His hand flew up to keep Dick in place, to stop him slipping away.
“Promise you will not tell,” Dick asked. Those dark blue eyes were swallowed up in ink, watching Roy carefully. If he lied, the Prince would know. The Prince would probably cut off his head himself. The softness did not run all the way to his core. At least not for those he saw as traitors.
Roy did not fear such a thing, no reality was possible where he would betray Dick’s trust. What could he possibly want that was of higher value?
He made his vow, repeating his thoughts out loud. Dick had blushed so sweetly, and there had been one more kiss.
And then Dick’s brother was getting married.
Roy supposed it was somewhat unusual that a younger sibling was being married off before the eldest and heir, and with that did come whispers. Maybe the younger was being relied on for the next heir, in a way that Dick would not be able to match. Maybe the royal family knew it. Maybe Tim was just very much in love and it was no more deep than that. Roy had not pried, but those whispers had clearly made their way to Dick, who had simply shrugged one day watching Roy shoot, a pile of books at the table and what felt like two dozen infants under the age of ten playing in the nearby fountain. Their respective families only ever seemed to grow larger by the year.
“There will be a tourney,” Dick stated, “as part of the celebrations.”
Roy fired an arrow, it flying straight and true and landing exactly where intended. He did the same with a second, third, then nocked a fourth.
“Will you join?” he asked.
“I am not allowed,” the Prince replied, squinting in the sunlight. “You must, though.”
“Must I?” He tried to sound like he did not care one way or another, but the idea of getting to show off was tempting. Maybe knock a few young green knights from their horses.
“Are you not my champion?”
Roy set down the end of his bow in the dry grass, leaning against it with one ankle tucked behind the other.
“As your Grace commands.”
“I do command.”
Dick smiled, brighter than the sun. Roy turned away, returning to shoot. Like the sun, it hurt to look at him sometimes.
Considering he was the groom, apparently the King had no problem with Timothy being the one to compete in the tourney. For some undisclosed reason, Dick remained next to his father under the shaded canopy. Alongside him was his youngest brother, a boy of ten, his sister, a woman of twenty, and her dearest friend, the bride to be. The two woman were not paying much attention to the day’s events, though the moment where Tim had approached the stand, lance under arm and mounted on his horse had led to an interesting scene. Stephanie had risen up, ring of flowers in hand, and tossed it onto the lance, allowing it to fall down to the hand guard. Tim had inclined his head, Stephanie had curtsied, returned to her seat, then that was that.
Tim quite comfortably unseated his next three opponents.
Dick had caught Roy’s eyes part way through the day. With a quick word to his father, who seemed rather bored of the entire occasion, he left the stand, circumventing the main arena, to join Roy over by the tents.
“Are you suitably impressed?” he asked, the clanging and exaltations of the fighters and crowds masking their conversation.
“Your brother is very good at hitting people with a stick.”
Dick got a dangerous gleam in his eye. “I challenge you to unseat him.”
Roy laughed, then found fit to fiddle with the leather straps around his arm.
“I dare not.”
“You do not think you could?”
“I could. I could also get a splinter in his eye spurting blood everywhere and having him die of an infection three days before his wedding.”
Dick smirked, and Roy complained further, “I am an archer, not a knight.”
“I would ask you to impress them all.”
Roy chewed his lip, then glanced behind Dick, at the lance Tim held, at the flowers and leaves tied in a tight circle.
“What’s with the garland?” Roy asked.
“Hmm?” Dick turned to see what he was looking at. “The favor? You must have been given a lady’s favor before.”
Roy resisted the urge to stammer. “I am aware. I meant the flowers. Are they important to her? To them?”
Dick inspected the circle of foliage as it sped by, Tim candidly taking out another competitor. His lance shattered this time, and yet he managed to grip the ring of flowers before it fell under the horses foot. Riding by, he tossed it back up to the stands, where Stephanie was waiting, hand outstretched. Her catching it was immediately followed by the crowd's joyful shouts. Dick whistled, and Cassandra appeared to be begging for a turn herself.
“Myrtle, sweet william, irises…” Dick turned back to Roy. “They all have meanings, it tells their story - but you have to learn to speak the language. I cannot tell it for you.”
“Boo.”
Dick laughed, then nudged Roy onwards. “Go. I want my knight to prove himself. In front of everyone, my father most of all. Your father.”
“You have such faith in me,” Roy complained, but he set out as bid. Dick watched, not even trying to hide the unabashed affection as he did so. It made Roy almost shy, for once.
“I have faith in my champion, yes. I do.”
Roy proceeded to knock Tim off his horse, and well enough that he was simply winded, and to the screaming delight of both his bride to be (a laughing joy to see him humbled, just a little) and the youngest brother, who clapped, utterly delighted.
The following week, when what felt like a full month’s worth of celebrations had died down, Dick had entered his chambers to find a garland of flowers, spun tightly and neatly into a circle. The Prince laughed, but he should have expected as much. Roy was a quick student.
Bellflower, clove and coriander (oh Roy), edelweiss, violet and leaves from the grand oak tree in the courtyard.
Dick stroked the foliage reverently. Maybe the time would come where secret presents and backstairs kisses would no longer be required, but for the moment, there was something rather quaint in the courtly love the two had. He was sure it would all come crashing down in fire and flames, but as Dick breathed in the scent of the plants, he could not quite find it in himself to care.
He had been the dutiful son his entire life. He could allow himself this one unshared treasure.

hi there!! i don't know if u have done this yet but could u do an akane character analysis??
Hello! I have done ship analyses with him as a focus before, but I’ve never done a post with Akane himself in the spotlight.
Akane is a hard character to tackle cause he is extremally reactive, so his attitude changes a lot depending on who he is interacting. Going over everyone would make this post huge, so I’ll try to share my overall take on him without getting into the nitty gritty.
As observant and smart as Akane is, at his core, he is an extremally emotional guy. He is openly obsessive and his mood swings are violent enough to put other characters on edge.
Tumblr media
But no matter how much Akane can be a slave to his emotions (usually his love) he very rarely gets blinded by rage. Even when he is enraged, he has never accidentally hurt someone (all the people he beat up are always his target. I feel so bad for Lemon...) and his anger can die just as easily as it comes to life.
Tumblr media
Akane is not close to Nene here, he had explicitly admited he didn’t think they could get along many chapters later at the arcade hang out, but he loses his drive to kick ass once she jumps in front of his target.
His hatred did not disappear, he will still chew out Yashiro and Hanako on their behavior later, but he can control his anger, he isn’t dominated by it.
The reason he is so angry in the first place isn’t a thirst for violence or anything of sorts, the guy just cares too much about too many things.
Is a contradictory aspect of his character cause he does not care about what his classmates think of him, but he still cares about them to some degree. He genuinely values people. He doesn’t expect anything in return when he helps someone, he helps for the sake of helping.
Tumblr media
And while his sense of duty and taking responsibility is a big part of Akane’s character this isn’t the only reason he is always ready to help, he is a good person, and it’s no coincidence he sticks with duties made to help others (class representative/student council) even after Aoi-chan loses interest.
He tries not to make it obvious, but he is very affected by other emotions, when Akane overhears Nene’s situation in the clock keepers arc he gets so fucking angry.
Tumblr media
His “tch” is not a mere “ugh, look at this supernatural being awful" it comes from a place of genuine anger for Kou, he feels inspired by his determination and he understands perfectly where Kou is coming from. He is rooting for Kou as he would root for himself, he genuinely wants him to succeed and the way Hanako brushed Kou off rubs him the wrong way.
This is a constant in his character. If Akane cares, he’ll care with his whole heart. His hatred of supernaturals is not because the clock keepers tricked him (though putting Aoi's life at risk does help A LOT) it's caused by their dismissal of human lives.
Tumblr media
Look at his face, this is not a fit of explosive anger, is a deep-rooted hatred, one he chose to hold on to.
The only time his anger is weak, and quick to disappear, is when people are assholes in ways that only affect Akane.
When Aoi asks something ridiculous, he’ll do it with a smile, no matter how tired he is. When Teru brutally bullies him, he doesn’t hold any grudges or get violent. When his classmates overwork him with chores and the clock keepers keep him busy he is never shown even thinking about rebelling.
Everyone that needs him is the priority over himself.
For someone so full of passion, Akane has very little self-respect. He complains cause he can recognize when something is unfair but he doesn’t get genuinely angry for himself because he can do it, so he might as well be useful and do it. He both does not value himself and really value himself: he has a lot of pride, he really values his promises, be them explicit, vocal promises, or the ones that come with his duties
He is very contradictory.
Tumblr media
Akane has never been an underdog, people recognize he is helpful and smart, he is a pretty popular kid, and yet, since he isn't satisfied with himself, he never gives himself a break. His standard is ridiculously high, so trying is a constant in his life. He aims for the stars so he usually fails.
It is the most obvious with his confessions with Aoi but a chapter that illustrates his struggles perfectly to me is the exam chapter: It’s clear he tries his very best to achieve his goal, which earned him an admirable full mark, the ‘expected’ best score. It’s not an exaggeration to say “he studied as hard as he could!” but it still isn’t enough, he doesn’t have the extra points Teru and Aoi have: He is not a star prodigy.
Tumblr media
Aoi doesn’t mind, but his standards for himself are far higher than Aoi’s, it’s one of the main reasons why he doesn’t take her rejections to heart.
He is used to giving his all and still not gain anything.
He does not fear the concept of failure, which makes him surprisingly self-centered and clash nicely with how observant and kind he is at his core.
His first instinct when he is handling people he cares about is to take all the work and responsibility. So when something doesn't work, he is to blame. He is the one that had to try harder.
He focused so much on doing his best to please Aoi, that he never questioned her motives for constantly turning him down.
He knows Aoi well, he genuinely pays attention to her likes, and dislikes, and values. He could pick up on hints that she likes him since way back, when they were little kids, and saying "I hate you!" made her cry even though her bullies, who are much harsher, never got her to even frown. But for as much as he understood Aoi, flaws and all, he never considered that for this relationship to work, she had to work on herself too and get over her mountain of issues, he just assumed she didn't accept his feeling cause he is the problem. He isn't enough. He should work on being better and make more impressive confessions. Their relationship was something only he had to chase, only he could fix.
His approach never worked, but he never questions why, following the instinct to "Do better next time". He gets stuck in it, he keeps trying to the point he considered his goal to date Aoi on the same level of 'accomplishing the impossible'
Tumblr media
But this is already long enough as it is so I'll stop rambling about the guy.

Hi! I'm a new follower and I'm lost! Was ck/wc? Your ocs are a crossover? Can you explain and give me some background so that I can ask characters questions?
first off hello!!!!!! welcome to my little cove!!!! thank you for sticking! this might be a little long but bear with me!
second: *actual ponctuation mode turns on*
Crusader kings is a grand-strategy war game, it's set in the medieval era (being the two start dates either being 1066 or 867 if you wanna try playing as a viking!) where you play as a ruler of a county/duchy/kingdom/empire and as the lil overseer of your land you have to form relationships with other neighboring rulers, manage your economy because its fragile as an apple product, make sure everyone is getting their basic needs met, etc.
I've always jokingly called it 'the sims for men' because it also has RPG themes to it! You're not playing only as a nation but a ruler, a person, depending on who you're playing as, their personality, culture and religion will pretty much dictate on how they act and while you are in full control of their actions, going against their nature and beliefs will usually make them stressed. You have to make sure your character is making friends, eating healthy, taking care of his mental health and just having his needs met (kinda like a sim... or a neopet).
And yeah there are hundreds of cultures/religions to play as! I can't go much in depth about these because I've never really left my comfort zone, so I've always played with the same religion and similar cultures, its an absurdily well-researched history game to a degree where the game constantly offers you wikipedia links just so you can understand what's going on! You can play as real people, the game incentives you to do it but it has a character creation and I've always preferred to make my own little guys so that's that.
Despite all of this sounding Very Serious it's a very cartoonish stylized games and like mentioned; the sims-esque madness, you wanna appoint a horse as your chancellor? you can do that, you wanna turn into a fucking bear? you can do that! Hell, there's a way you can simply turn your entire population into anthro animals just for the kicks of it, there's witchcraft, werewolves, vampires and just the weirdest shit.
Anyways, if that sounds like something you'd be into; the second game is free on steam, keep in mind that this is considered to be the second most difficult strategy game of all time, and on average can take 2 months to understand the basics, lol.
CK/WC is.. not really a mashup of the two, it's an attempt to introduce warrior cats to a similiar system and hierarchy of medieval kingdoms but still keeping their core values, most of the OCs are mine and based off my characters on Crusader Kings but a few are borrowed from friends (Hell, Ironstar was originally made by my friend but we liked him SO much he became an OC that was later given to me, thank you Loren!) and a few are just NPCs (Holypyre, for example)
We had to make a plethora of changes to the clans so they could still be clans but still more of a kingdom; with no starclan to guide them they decided that the leader's kids would become the future leader because they believe that if starclan once gave their parents their nine lives, they would favor their children more.
Clans can have several camps inside of them and have massive territories, those camps are overseed by pack leaders who do not get nine lives but have to swear an oath to the clan leader to never betray them.
Deputies were reformed to be a medieval king's council, with one true deputy who would assist the leader on every task and others like marshal, envoy and steward who would manage other specific task.
And that's pretty much the basic foundation we build on!
TL;DR: CK is a medieval game where you play as a king who has to take care of his nation, CK/WC is an AU where the clans have adopted a similar style to kingdom life, with there being an absolute king and vassals who serve them.

Media capture is one of the great causes of democratic backsliding in Central and Eastern Europe. Next month’s elections in Poland, despite a burgeoning cash-for-visas scandal rocking the incumbent administration, is largely being framed around a nonsensical referendum question on supposed EU efforts to push illegal migrants into the country.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the chairman of the country’s ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), is borrowing from the playbook of his Hungarian counterpart, Prime Minister Viktor Orban, by stoking fears of foreign interference and by harnessing informal power, which could undermine the fairness of the elections.
These governments used a threefold informal toolkit to consolidate control over the state and the society. First, clientelist corruption is central to controlling economic power by keeping political and economic opponents sidelined. Second, media capture is the linchpin of these regimes, used to boost the government’s support and undermine dissident voices. Third, the government is tilting the playing field with vote-buying as well as economic and policy coercion that has a negative effect on the integrity of the elections. This all comes against a backdrop of ongoing legal action taken by the EU against Poland for its persistent disregard for democratic standards and the core values of the European bloc.
For the first time, last year, the European Commission triggered the rule of law conditionality mechanism against Hungary in response to democratic backsliding. This new instrument aims to protect the budget and financial interests of the EU in the face of rule-of-law breaches, such as systemic irregularities in public procurement.
Brussels is withholding nearly 28 billion euros from Orban’s government; this includes the country’s entire share of the bloc’s cohesion funds for the 2021-2027 period, amounting to 22 billion euros, and 5.8 billion euros under the Recovery and Resilience Facility. In the meantime, Poland has been blocked from accessing more than 35 billion euros in COVID-19 recovery assets.
This, admittedly, represents a scaling of activity by the EU. But this determination to use funds as leverage, though a novel development in European governance, is not a path that is likely to bring either Orban’s Fidesz party or PiS to heel.
The reason lies in a lack of political will by the European Council and European Commission to enforce the rules. Both Orban’s Fidesz and Kaczynski’s PiS are tilting the playing field illegally and behind the scenes, in ways that are hard to detect, in order to sideline their opponents and silence critical views.
The extent to which both administrations have weakened checks and balances and undermined democratic institutions in their countries is little known to many in Europe. And this is not surprising, given that neither employs openly oppressive methods in pursuit of their aims: Instead, they both instrumentalize the law to fit their authoritarian goals.
Each country achieves this in different ways. In Poland, party patronage and nepotism are the key features of the country’s organizational clientelism. This has resulted in an unprecedented number of relatives and allies of PiS taking up high-level state positions in a nontransparent way, and, in turn, has helped Kaczynski maintain his fragile coalition.
Meanwhile in Hungary, state resources are largely distributed in a top-down fashion, and they are centered around Orban’s personal network. The outcome is full monopolization of state and key economic sectors. What’s more, foreign companies in Hungary are increasingly complaining about hostile takeover attempts by the government. It reportedly intimidates them with various tactics, including by using the captured prosecutor’s office.
There is commonality between the two parties in that they both exercise power informally through media capture, and they use powerful individuals and state companies to silence or neuter media outlets independent of the government. PiS, for example, has turned Poland’s public broadcaster into a state propaganda instrument, underpinning the move by having state oil giant PKN Orlen take over Polska Press media organization. As a consequence, Daniel Obajtek, a close political ally of Kaczynnski, now controls 20 out of Poland’s 24 regional newspapers, more than 120 local magazines, and 500 online news portals. These two media empires are working together to push a narrative that the principal opposition challenger in next month’s election, Donald Tusk, is collaborating with Germany and Russia to destroy the Polish state.
In Hungary, the situation is worse still. Origo and Index, the country’s largest online news portals, were independent before being taken over by pro-Orban interests linked to businessman Miklos Vaszily. Origo is now staunchly pro-government and is often accused of publishing conspiracy theories and fake news. Index, after a leadership change that resulted in swathes of its staff resigning en masse, has now ceased any overt criticism of the Hungarian government. The independent Klubradio station, meanwhile, was forced off the air, on dubious grounds relating to its license, by a state organization packed with Fidesz-aligned decision-makers.
In both countries, too, national competition authorities and politically captured media councils are used to amplify pro-government media—in many cases by approving mergers and acquisitions in a way that favors the government. The formation of the Central European Press and Media Foundation in Hungary in 2018 exemplifies this: a body through which 476 media outlets have been transferred to a pro-Fidesz foundation.
Those who do try to go it alone or sustain their position have, in turn, become government targets. Just ask Zoltan Varga, one Hungary’s last remaining media chiefs independent of the government, who has endured a sustained period of harassment from allies of the prime minister, and who has, reportedly, been surveilled with Pegasus spyware at the instruction of government officials.
Brussels has responded by backing formal institutional changes to European directives. And it is in the difference between the letter of the law and how it is being implemented that Fidesz and PiS have expanded their attacks on independent democratic bodies within their countries, free of any fear of repercussions.
For example, on media regulation in both countries, the EU’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive imposes formal requirements that apply on a pan-EU level. However, these are easily met by the text of a well-designed national law, and they are effectively akin to a boxticking exercise in their current form—as evidenced by the configuration and functioning of the Hungarian Media Council, which, while formally adhering to EU requirements, is essentially captured by the government and biased in its activity.
This means that as things stand, and as the democratic foundations of these two countries wilt, the EU is stuck in a loop. Both Orban and Kaczynski are happy to maintain their facade of adherence to the EU’s rule-of-law framework, claiming that they are complying with national legislation. But the legislative process lacks the basic tenets of democracy by fostering the nontransparent fast-tracking of legislation and misusing national consultations and biased referendums to legitimize certain measures.
The EU’s position is therefore unsustainable, insomuch that it addresses certain aspects of informal power but ignores others. It is cherry-picking when it should be responding in absolute terms, and it cannot reasonably claim that it is making every effort to ensure that there is a standardization of values across the European bloc.
A multifaceted and sustained approach by the European Commission is required if Poland and Hungary are to be brought back from the brink. This should include immediate legal action against the governments of both countries, an indefinite suspension of all EU funds, and a more effective enforcement of conditionality.
The Hungarian government promised to reduce the proportion of single-bidder tenders to below 15 percent. While it was taken as a significant step, this will not undercut systemic corruption in Hungary. The EU needs to take into account that Orban’s allies can still circumvent the authorities informally: Fake bidders can show up to imitate “competition” on the market, and public procurements can end up with the prime minister’s allies once again.
In the context of media capture and the EU regulatory framework, the European Commission must be more specific in defining informal power to better protect the integrity of the common market and freedom of speech. And it should use its very clear competencies around competition law and state aid to step in, on scale, with infringement proceedings to address the politicization of media ownership and the abuse of state advertisements.
Many in Brussels will make the argument that the EU does not have sufficient powers to counter democratic backsliding. However, this is not true. It has a whole host of tools at its disposal, and it does not need to engage in a perpetual doctrinal innovation each and every time there is a flash point in an offending member state.
It is creating its own problems by allowing a networked system of de-democratization to flourish in Poland and Hungary and by maintaining its current, flawed approach of drip-feeding funds upon the apparent fulfillment of specific conditions. This allows both PiS and Fidesz to superficially remedy issues while informal power systems are left unchecked—and free to maintain their attack on the democratic fabric of each country.
The EU cannot be half in and half out in its engagements with administrations that are have no intention of playing by the rules of the European bloc. It has to play hardball and use every tool at its disposal if it is to safeguard the democracy of these two countries.

The Winners (Beartown #3)
By Fredrik Backman  /  5 stars
This one has definitely been a long time coming for me. I love Fredrik Backman in general, though I have a special love for his Beartown books. Not that that’s always a popular opinion - they are by far his saddest and most serious books. They contain a lot of the same core values that his other books have, but the things that happen in Beartown force you to take a look at what you’re morally willing to accept, and how very much it can take to do the right thing.
I half read, half listened to this book. I’ve loved Marin Ireland since I first listened to her doing Beartown, and I’m happy to see that she’s continued with this series as well as Anxious People. Her interpretations of the characters, the accents, and the pacing of her reading does so much to draw you into the world of the story.
In Fredrik’s (is it odd that I refer to him by first name? His books are such favorites of mind that he feels like a close friend by now) usual way, he doesn’t hold back. He tells us from the very first chapter that one of our (at least one of mine) favorite characters is going to die. That he won’t get a chance to get a long life, but die violently. That should ease the tension, right? Thanks for the heads up, now we can prepare ourselves for that. There’s no preparing yourself for what’s going to happen. No hardening your heart so that it doesn’t still tear you apart when the moment comes.
It’s been 2 and a half years since the first book, two years since both Maya and Benji left Beartown. Now, they both find themselves on their way back to attend a funeral. Things in Beartown may be the same in some ways, but there have also been big changes. Now, Beartown is the one with the winning hockey club and the council’s money. They’re thriving, and talks of upcoming expansions are one of the worst kept secrets.
A storm hits, the night before the death that brings everyone back. One of the worst the forest has seen in awhile. The storm’s impact and the wreckage left behind will only be one step in the trouble brewing for the town.
A journalist seeks to reveal the corruption in the accounts for Beartown’s hockey club, and the blame seems to always lead back to one man. Tension between Hed and Beartown rises when Hed’s rink is destroyed by the storm, forcing their teams to have to practice at Beartown’s rink. Resentment builds in a young heart. Can the community come together to save the things it’s always known? Or will the ruin be too great this time?
As much as I want to shout to the hills about this book, I find myself approaching it cautiously. Fredrik has never been afraid to approach tough subjects, not just events that happens, but the aftermaths of them as well. How do we view these? Have they become normal? Can we really accept that - should we? What could we have done to change the outcome? How could we have been better?
And the foreshadowing. You’d think as the final event draws near, the one everything has been building toward, it would be easier. We had time to prepare ourselves for this. It’s not going to be a surprise. We’ll have the benefit of seeing it coming. But each reminder, each mention that this is the last time, the last chance we get to see our people truly happy, breaks you that little bit more. When it happens, you fall just as hard.
Because of this, while I loved the book - even as I sobbed, my heart twisting until my lungs wouldn’t work properly anymore - there are a few friends that I want to keep from reading it. I saw how hard Beartown hit them. How they couldn’t make it through Us Against You, couldn’t protect themselves from the hatred the victims faced, the mistakes the community made. The Winners is not easier - it’s the hardest of them all to handle. This book will destroy you. Not that everything is doom and gloom - the good times, when we can laugh and heal. When friendships shine with such strength, and love seems stronger than anything. These are just as powerful, the heart of a story that already has a heart too big.
This one will sit with me for awhile. And though I only finished it a few days ago, already I have plans to start Beartown over again the first of next year. It seems fitting to start the year off with a momentous book, one that resonates just as hard with each re-reading.

❛ don’t you know what you’re doing to me? ❜
An actual one-shot this time! Hopefully ME:A is cool, and weirdly this resonated with a ship I don't write as often as I'd like.
Thanks for the prompt! Full piece over on AO3
Avitus Rix hadn't been home in nearly a decade and nothing made him more keenly aware of this fact than a party.
A soiree, if you wanted to get fancy, and considering the abundance of glitz everywhere he turned he was fairly certain it was meant to be just that. Fancy. Formal. A social networking event, politics up close and personal, and it was easy, sometimes, to forget that the Hierarchy could be like this. The other half of the coin, military discipline giving way to posturing of a different sort, and his mother insisted it all followed the same rules but he wasn't so sure. Military was a matter of action. Decisions, sure, the higher up the chain you went, but the merits were easy enough to trace.
Here, though? Not so much.
Campaigns and fundraisers and he'd only been partially listening when his father had explained the purpose of the gathering. Whatever his parents liked to say was never really what something was, at its core. Listening to the undercurrents, an ear open to the gossip, and it was hard not to surmise that he was being put on display.
Meritocracy, he'd learned at a young age, didn't mean things like bloodlines and family names held no value.
"I heard he was keeping his son from the training course --"
"--really? What's wrong with being a Spectre?"
"Oh, he's never liked them…"
Avitus tuned this conversation out, swiping a glass of wine from a nearby tray and making his way deeper into the house that had never felt like much of a home.
His parents had outdone themselves with this one. A variety of food was made available to their guests, dextro naturally in abundance but some alternate options for the few groups of Asari and Salarians he saw ranged throughout the main hall. A Council event, then, or at least that's how it was being dressed up. No wonder they wanted their Spectre son to put in an appearance.
He tugged impatiently at the collar of his suit, lamenting the more comfortable clothing his father would have lambasted him for, and wedged himself into a corner near the first floor library. Smaller than the one upstairs, this collection had been curated to appeal to a broad range of tastes -- meaning it had little substance, packed with prose so purple he half wondered if the authors in question had ever even traveled to the places they claimed as inspiration.
The world-weary traveler makes his way home at last, his sister would've said. How's the galaxy been treating you?
And he'd respond that it was horrible and that he was a grumpy old man dreaming of retirement and they'd laugh at the blatant lie. Only now he was here and she wasn't, and things were horrible and maybe he didn't want to retire in so many words but Spirits he could go for a change. Of scenery, of pace.
Of company.
The same things that had led Maeven to leave, to run off with the girl who'd stolen her heart, heedless of the rifts it had left behind.
You always were braver than me, weren't you?

S Chrome Interlude: Chess Player Ch 2
Chapter 2: Scheme
In that case, we can finally proceed with the next stage of the specialized model project.
Tumblr media
Black’s knight moved to c6, and White’s pawn advanced one square forward from c2.
Chrome: Bishop, c8 to g4.
John: I can see through your plan of attack.
Chrome: ……
John: You wouldn’t have employed such brash moves in the past.
If you make excessively arrogant moves, you could subject yourself to the criticism of the general public. That’s where the subject of my criticisms are.
I believe I taught you this before—wait until the opportunity is ripe before making a move.
John commanded White’s queen to move to b3, which became an obvious threat.
Chrome: Or… I could control everything in this situation from now on.
In addition, I might’ve noticed the possibility that all of this was a trap.
Chrome moved his queen to d7 and defended the pawn at f7.
Chrome: You may think that I’ve shown you my weak point, but perhaps it won’t be easy for you to take advantage of it.
(......)
Tumblr media
Crowd: Where is Asimov? Why isn’t he coming? I thought he was specially invited this time around.
He appears to be researching specialized Structure models as of late, of course he doesn’t have the time to go to social events.
That being said, he’s also the type of person to never make an appearance in such places.
That’s true.
The Science Council seems to be putting quite some value on that project. I wonder if it’s actually that important.
Since it’s Nikola we’re talking about, he’d definitely approve of whatever it is that’s being developed even if it’s a really frightening weapon of destruction.
If they can’t keep it under control…
Although it’d be best if the weapons used to recapture Earth are formidable, it would be disadvantageous for them if it’s difficult to control.
There seems to be a member of the council who already proposed a Structure management bill. But it appears that Council President Hassen rejected it for being inhumane.
Inhumane— Oh really now, are they even considered to be human beings?
Wouldn’t “that” be the reason why that bill was proposed in the first place? All because they weren’t able to control that Structure…
Citizens were hurt because of this…
When he heard those words in their gossip, Chrome suddenly glanced at the guests whispering nearby.
Chrome: (A Structure went out of control?
I never heard of something like this back at the base… There aren't any reports of a Structure sanctioned for harming others either.
If humanity decides to hunt down Structures, it will become a serious problem.)
So misinformation was leaked on purpose then…
Under such circumstances, using Structures as a stepping stone to promote the implementation of a bill is one of the most short-sighted plans he had ever heard of. The high-ranking people aren’t likely to engage in such a poorly thought move. As far as what Chrome knew about Structures, it was impossible for ordinary military Structures to experience shifts in their Sea of Consciousness and become uncontrollable within Eden so long as there are no notable external stimuli.
Chrome: There must be something going on behind these rumors…
He needed more information. As he thought about it, Chrome made his way towards John who was on the opposite side of the ceremonial hall.
Chrome: Mister Smith, about—
Attendant: Mister John Smith.
Councilor Trem would like to discuss some of the plan’s details regarding the rebooting of City Number 089’s Core Purification Tower with you.
John: I’ll be on my way.
John glanced at Chrome.
John: If you wish to get information, you have to acquire it on your own.
John walked away with the attendant as he said those words to him, and Chrome was left alone. The fact that John had left the hall and intentionally ignored Chrome became evident more than ever. The people living in Eden aren’t familiar with the Structurization process. However, a fair amount of people knew about his Structurization because of his father’s social standing. Because the attitude of those in power is a great conversation topic for those people watching from the sidelines. Chrome looked around and felt the piercing gazes of the people in this hall. But when he turned his head back one more time, those glances disappeared. He adjusted his visual modules and he was able to lip-read their sporadic conversations.
Crowd: (Look, that person is actually…)
(Why is there a Structure here?)
(Keep it down…! Didn’t you hear what Mr. Smith said just then? He still hasn’t forfeited his identity as a human. Watch what you’re saying.)
(But if he’s already a Structure, then why does he still identify himself as a human…)
(It’s the higher-ups’ idea. How in the world are we supposed to know what goes on in their heads?)
(Anyway, it’d be best if we don’t get too close to him.)
(Agreed. If he starts to become uncontrollable like the Structure in those rumors…)
Chrome: Humans residing in Eden and Structures presumably have little to no interaction with each other… Yet why do they hold such prejudicial thoughts about them?
It would seem a survey is necessary.
Chrome straightened his collar and went to the group of people talking with each other. He smiled politely and greeted the guests, who showed a slightly uncomfortable facial expression.
Chrome: Pardon me ladies and gentlemen, but would you be so kind as to provide further elaboration on the topic you were discussing just now?
(......)
Tumblr media
Eden, Closed Laboratory Area B3. A person’s footsteps could be heard from the spacious halls. The sound of the iris scan meant that both sides of the hefty hatch door had opened. A bright ray of light shone inside the dimly lit room. The young researchers sitting in front of the monitor squinted when they saw the entrance open up.
Nikola: And the result?
Asimov: According to the provided measurement reports, Lucia definitely regained all of her memories. Her Sea of Consciousness is stable now as well. I can’t find any abnormalities.
Nikola: What about the model’s condition?
Asimov: There aren’t any problems with the Raven Plume model’s operation at this point.
The model’s inconsistencies have also been improved on, so I’d say the model’s current condition is at its best so far. It’s become what I’d originally expected when I designed it.
Nikola: In that case, we can finally proceed with the next stage of the specialized model project.
Asimov: ……
Nikola: Is there a problem?
Asimov: I’ve analyzed all the data on Raven Plume, and the template for the next specialized model is roughly complete.
However, there are too few samples and data from the research on specialized Structure models that I could take reference from. Aside from that, it’s different from the Raven Plume model where I could interchange data variables in the first place—there isn't any kind of initial stage data for this new type of specialized model.
Because of that, the conditions of how one adapts to the model could become complex altogether, so to speak.
The research has finally reached a bottleneck. If we want to further proceed with this…
I may require a highly excellent Structure with a Sea of Consciousness that’s more stable than average to participate in the specialized model’s compatibility assessment.
First of all, we have to look for Structures who can meet those requirements to participate in that assessment
Nikola: I’ll let you handle that then.

Title: The Crucible of Learning: Exploring the Significance of School
School, often termed the cornerstone of education, plays a pivotal role in shaping young minds and fostering a society's intellectual and socio-economic growth. Serving as more than just a physical structure, schools stand as nurturing environments where knowledge, skills, and values are imparted to future generations.
At its core, the purpose of school extends beyond mere academic instruction. While mathematics, science, literature, and history form the bedrock of scholastic education, schools also serve as laboratories for life skills development. Here, students learn to collaborate, communicate effectively, think critically, and solve problems, essential competencies that transcend the boundaries of academia.
Furthermore, schools serve as melting pots of diversity, where individuals from various backgrounds converge to learn and grow together. This multicultural environment not only promotes tolerance and understanding but also prepares students for the globalized world they will inevitably navigate.
Moreover, schools play a crucial role in socialization, providing students with opportunities to form friendships, develop interpersonal skills, and navigate social dynamics. These interactions contribute significantly to their emotional intelligence and overall well-being.
Beyond the individual level, schools are instrumental in shaping collective identities and fostering civic engagement. Through initiatives such as student councils, community service projects, and extracurricular activities, schools instill values of responsibility, empathy, and citizenship, preparing students to become active participants in their communities.
In conclusion, the significance of school cannot be overstated. It serves as the crucible in which the next generation is forged, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. As such, investing in education and ensuring equitable access to quality schooling is paramount for the continued progress and prosperity of society.

Reddit discussions
Title: Navigating the Depths of Reddit Discussions
Reddit, the self-proclaimed "front page of the internet," is a virtual melting pot of ideas, opinions, and discussions. With thousands of communities (subreddits) covering topics ranging from the mundane to the profound, navigating Reddit discussions can be both exhilarating and daunting.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Reddit discussions is the sheer diversity of perspectives. Whether you're interested in politics, gaming, cooking, or astrophysics, there's a subreddit for you. This diversity fosters a rich tapestry of conversations, where users can engage with people from all walks of life.
However, with great diversity comes great variability in quality. Reddit discussions can range from thoughtful and insightful to downright toxic and inflammatory. It's essential to approach each discussion with a critical eye, discerning credible sources from misinformation and trolls.
Participation in Reddit discussions requires a certain level of etiquette. Reddiquette, the informal code of conduct for Reddit users, emphasizes respect, courtesy, and constructive dialogue. While disagreements are inevitable, maintaining a civil tone and backing arguments with evidence can elevate the discourse and promote meaningful exchange.
Reddit discussions are not limited to text-based interactions. Many subreddits host AMA (Ask Me Anything) sessions, where notable individuals, ranging from celebrities to experts in various fields, answer questions from the community in real-time. These sessions offer a unique opportunity for users to engage directly with influencers and thought leaders.
In conclusion, Reddit discussions represent a microcosm of the internet itself – a vast and diverse landscape where ideas clash, opinions flourish, and knowledge is shared. By approaching discussions with an open mind, a critical eye, and a healthy dose of skepticism, users can navigate the depths of Reddit and emerge enriched by the experience.

On Magicians:
Simon the Librarian is the eldest and maddest of the Magicians who come from the Olwyn Institute of the Arcane Arts, as he was present at its founding just shy of eight hundred years ago. He currently presides over the Ogrim Royal Library in an arrangement with the royal family of Leiuna, who fund his research in exchange for his council.
The man himself is a sight to behold. He wears an enormous blue robe which drags on the floor and stretches ten feet upwards to his head, which pokes out the top like a groundhog looking up from its hole. What little of his face is visible behind his beard and wire rimmed spectacles is almost completely covered up by the shadow of his enormous pointed hat, the top of which is nearly thirteen feet off the ground. Despite the enormity of his height, his arms and his head are the size of a normal person. Only god knows what the rest of him looks like under that robe- I can only imagine very stretched out. Watching him wave around his little arms (compared to his stature, at least) would be a comical sight if not for his imposing aura. Whatever deep magic runs within him can be felt a good fifteen, even twenty feet away, and it is a truly discomforting feeling.
I was able to meet with him only very briefly to discuss some of my inquiries, during which time I found him to be extraordinarily rude. He was only interested in discussing the Institute and its history, which is how I came to learn the basics of the Olwyn Institute. However, when I asked him about his personal life, he simply vanished into thin air.
According to Simon, The Olwyn Institute of the Arcane Arts is the highest house of learning here in the west. Its scholars at the entry level study the fields of biology, physics, alchemy, philosophy, and mathematics, to provide a foundation on which they can study the practice of powers beyond the physical realm, which they call Arcana. The Institute’s researchers -Sorcerers, they call themselves- translate and study texts of antiquity, and collect relics of great power for examination. Some of them have even learned to reproduce some of the techniques described in the texts. These, they call spells.
A Sorcerer is considered an acclaimed academic if he can master two spells. Three is not unheard of, but very unusual. At that point, however, is where a hard line forms. A small handful of very talented Sorcerers have been able to create new spells on their own, not copied from the texts, and once they had done so had no trouble mastering one spell after the other. And when they could not stop, they became the creatures that they call Magicians.
Perhaps creatures is too unkind of a word, but something changes in the very core of those who become Magicians. Madness grips them all, to varying degrees. They become antisocial, and lose touch with the world around them. And then their bodies begin to change in strange ways, often until they are unrecognizable, and no longer do they age. But the things that they are capable of are without limit. These few individuals, the Magicians, (there are six of them now, as far as I know) wield a terrible, terrible power.
Sorcerers are highly respected among the nobility in Leiuna- it is widely believed that only children of noble lineage possess the capacity for Sorcery and so they are seen not only as accomplished scholars of the world and the powers beyond it, but also as validation of the value of their families. Magicians are not beloved in this way. They are (very justifiably) feared and reviled, but nevertheless tolerated, for their might is uncontested. It is very fortunate that they mostly keep to themselves.
There was only one other Magician that I was able to speak with, who was unfortunately even more obtuse and frustrating. Asking around for Magicians (which got me no shortage of strange looks from locals) I was told of an old man called Marlon who lives in a barrel on the east side of town. He is the only Magician around with no association whatsoever with the Institute.
When I found him, the energy that he emanated was almost entirely drowned out by the stench of the alley. The locals, apparently, refer to him as Marlon the Fetid as a sort of mock title. He would only say one thing to me, “do not ask questions that you do not want the answers to.” No matter what I asked him, he responded only with the same sentence, over and over again like a broken record. He grew more irate each time, and after the fifth time he answered a question in this manner, he looked me in the eyes with a deep scowl on his face, and the pages of my journal all at once fell out of their binding and onto the road. I do not know how he did that. He helped me pick up the pages, and when he handed me a fistful of paper that he had collected from the ground, he looked me in the eyes once more and said “leave, and take your garbage with you.” I did so.

QC's Rebecca Reynolds on her vision for queer Queensland
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/qcs-rebecca-reynolds-on-her-vision-for-queer-queensland/
QC's Rebecca Reynolds on her vision for queer Queensland
Tumblr media
Rebecca Reynolds is the CEO of the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health and Co-Chair of the Qld Government Roundtable for LGBTI Communities. She shares her advocacy journey as well as her vision for LGBTQIA+ Queenslanders.
I grew up in rural and regional country, in the colonised state now known as Western Australia.
It was the beauty, vastness and remoteness of that country that really was the first sense of our differences for me.
The oldest child of a priest and a school teacher, my mother in particular raised me on books and movies that were from another time and another place.
To take a line from the Sound of Music, they spoke of “girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes, and snowflakes that stayed on your nose and eyelashes” and when I looked around me, there was nothing but salt lakes and red dirt and a white dress would not have stayed that way for long.
When I was about 16 or 17, and at boarding school, I read a book called Under the Tuscan Sun and it was the first time that I had read a version of myself written into a book or anything really that wasn’t just my thoughts and feelings.
It felt liberating and made me want to find my people.  It was also a key defining moment for me in terms of values that I live by in my work. With visibility being core.
Community challenges
It is one of the biggest challenges for our communities today.  Speaking our differences while honouring the things that we share.
We are a diverse bunch of people packed together under the same roof.  Those under the roof know that we have come together because of a shared sense of needing to create places and spaces of safety, those outside often only see the one structure.
We have some big challenges for us when we start thinking about who to invite in. It’s like our identity and bodily journeys all over again.  Who do I trust?
To our allies genuinely wanting to do better, be deliberate and intentional.  Come to the table with what you need, yes, but also what you can offer in return.  You have pathways into places that we can’t yet imagine and genuine partnerships are stronger when both parties benefit.
We rely heavily on our largely unfunded and underfunded community-based organisations who are often forced down a path of responding to what is in front of them. Meeting the needs of our local communities, and leaving little time and energy to think through the precious gifts of mentoring and sustainability.
It is why our funded organisations, like Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC), need to hold space for communities to take a breath and know that all of the passion, hard work and energy won’t have been lost.  It is another reason for the way I work.
Going deeper
Going back to a much younger version of myself, when I had found the lesbians in Tuscany (Under the Tuscan Sun) I was connected through the Western Australian AIDS Council to HIV/AIDS and the crisis and loss of life that our communities were experiencing at that time.
While life moved on, my connection to working within the HIV/AIDS response remained.
This ultimately, saw me heading to Thailand to live and work for four years.
Here, one of the roles that I was privileged to get to know was travelling with the outreach nursing team. They explained treatments and co-infections to a generation of families across Thailand who were grappling with a lack of access to treatments.
On one particular day, we were visiting with a 10-year-old who had lost her parents during Thaksins’ War on Drugs. She was living with her Aunt and Uncle who would use their income to stock up on ice (to keep the medication cold) and batteries (to enable her to stick to her medication regime of 6am and 6pm daily).
Her friends had all started having sleepovers and she did not want to miss out. However, the clock was an essential piece of her daily routine.
I suggested to the nurse in English, that we drive back to the nearest 7-Eleven to buy her a Casio watch. She could then go to the slumber party and still achieve her medication regime.
“Rebecca,” she says sternly (or kindly) “what happens when the watch runs out of batteries and where will she tell her friends she got the money for the watch?”
It created a big shift in the reasons why I work for change now.  Rather than making myself feel better by buying the watch, I shifted my focus to the systems that keep our communities silenced, isolated and not fitting in.
Don’t buy the watch. Go deeper.
A future vision for Queensland
So with the long-term hat on, I know what I want to see change for our communities here in Queensland. With an election before us in 2024, eight years out from a time when our State and the way it treats its communities being showcased on the world stage, there is no time like the present to make some big, bold and deep changes that will have a lasting impact on our communities.
The commitment from our State Government to fund not only a Strategy for Queensland, but also a Peak for our LGBTI community-based organisations is significant. And in terms of the Peak, would be a first for Australia.
This would create a visible conversation for people everywhere to participate in and bring solutions that fit our local communities to the table.
On the other side of that, is that we know all too well the impact when conversations about our race, our lives, our bodies, our relationships and our feelings happen in public settings. That people can be cruel and in my time working within LGBTI health and wellbeing, I and the teams of people that I work alongside see the impact of that up close and personal.  We live it.
As members of our communities, we are the people best equipped to make decisions about those changes that will most impact us and we need places of safety to do that work from.
A Pride Centre for Brisbane
A Pride Centre for Brisbane would be a visible, safe and welcome start.  It would change the story for the younger folk and generations that are still to find their voice and their feet.
However, more importantly, it would give us the chance to build a model that extends strength and support radiating across the state to connect with those folk in communities who are doing amazing things.
It would make us stronger and it would weave our communities together in a way that would interrupt many of the negative impacts that are happening in our lives now.
I believe that we can change the story by sharing ours.  That we can support each other, bring visibility where it is needed and learn and grow from the unique ways in which so many of us are working across this state.
We can create places of safety in the most unexpected ways, through the most unexpected means.
Great things are possible for our LGBTIQ+ Communities in Queensland and when we work together. It is often the smallest of moments that catch us unaware but are profoundly life-changing.

How to Find the Best Concreter in Newcastle
Tumblr media
A professional concreter can help you with a variety of residential concreting projects, including new driveways and patios. They can also lay a concrete slab for your swimming pool or add a decorative touch with coloured concrete.
Like Latin Dance School, Origin Concrete Newcastle is committed to quality craft, professionalism, and excellent customer service. They are also advocates for community involvement and support local small businesses.
Concrete driveways
Concreters offer a range of residential concrete services that include the installation of new driveways and patios. They use specialized equipment and techniques to deliver quality results. Their services are affordable and can add value to your property. They also advise on the best surface materials for your project.
Concrete driveways are popular among homeowners because they are strong, durable, and low-maintenance. They can last for 20 years or more and are a good investment for your home. They can also be designed to look decorative and complement the style of your home. They can be finished in a variety of colours, making them a great choice for any home.
When laying a concrete driveway, your concreter will prepare the area by excavating and levelling the ground. They may also lay a layer of gravel before pouring the concrete. They will use form guides and string to ensure a consistent depth throughout the concrete. They will also install damp-proofing and insulation if required.
Concrete paths
Concrete is a durable and low-maintenance material that can be used for many types of surfaces. It is a popular choice for driveways, patios, and pool decks. In addition, it can be shaped to create eye-catching designs and complement your home’s aesthetics. Adding a new concrete surface to your property will increase its value and help you enjoy the outdoors.

These professionals use specialized equipment and techniques to ensure a quality result. They can also help you resolve design and layout issues and council compliance processes.
Newcastle concreters can also provide permeable concrete, which is a great option for eco-friendly homeowners. It is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and keep water flowing naturally. However, the production of concrete is resource-intensive and can have a negative impact on the environment. Researchers are working on ways to produce concrete with lower carbon dioxide emissions.
Concrete slabs
Concrete slabs are popular for a variety of construction applications. They are durable and easy to maintain, and can add value to your property. They can also be used to construct pathways and driveways. A professional concreter can advise you on the best surface materials for your slab. They will also work to your timelines and budget.
Slabs can be built on the ground or suspended. Slabs on beams are ideal for structures with long spans and high loads. They can be constructed in various types including one-way joist slab, flat slab, waffle slab, hollow core slab, precast slab and slab on grade.
Concrete slabs can be coloured to create unique finishes. The process involves blending water, aggregates, cement, and your chosen colour pigment to produce a concrete mixture with a specific tone. It is an environmentally-friendly alternative to paint.
Concrete walls
Concrete walls are a great way to add value to your property and improve its aesthetic. They are also fire-resistant and acoustically efficient. If you’re considering building a concrete wall, it is important to choose the right contractor for the job. Local concreters are committed to quality craft, professionalism and excellent customer service. They can help you with a variety of residential and commercial concrete projects, including driveways and patios.
