Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
The conscious exclusion of male athletes from female sports has enabled the production of elite level of female athletes rather than male. To suppose that male advantage in sports could be removed would require extraordinary evidence. There is currently no substantial scientific evidence that this male biological advantage can be removed.
Testosterone suppression as a way to fairly include trans women in female sports has been highly contested and largely discredited. Over the past two decades there have been over a dozen published research papers for a total of some 800 participants which investigated the effect of testosterone suppression on muscle mass, and in some instances muscle strength, in transgender women.
Below is a summary of the most recent research from 2020-2022:
Summary:
Wiik et al., 2020: There was minimal loss of muscle mass or strength in transgender women following 12 months of testosterone suppression, and some subjects gained strength. After treatment transgender women remained 48% stronger, with 35% larger quadriceps mass compared with the control population of females.
Roberts et al., 2020 found that transgender women still retain a competitive advantage 2 years after hormone treatment. Transwomen still had a 9% faster mean run speed after the 1 year period of testosterone suppression that is recommended by World Athletics for inclusion in women’s events.
Hilton and Lundberg, 2021 conclude: “Superior anthropometric, muscle mass and strength parameters achieved by males at puberty, and underpinning a considerable portion of the male performance advantage over females, are not removed by the current regimen of testosterone suppression permitting participation of transgender women in female sports categories. Rather, it appears that the male performance advantage remains substantial.”
Harper et al., 2021 found: “Hormone therapy decreases strength, LBM [lean body mass] and muscle area, yet values remain above that observed in cisgender women, even after 36 months. These findings suggest that strength may be well preserved in transwomen during the first 3 years of hormone therapy.”
Heather et al., 2022 provides a critical review, reporting: “The existing data suggests that lowering testosterone to less than 10 nmol/L for 12 months decreases muscle mass but not to biological female levels and despite the decrease in mass, muscle strength can be maintained, especially if concurrently exercising. Estrogen therapy does not affect most of the anatomical structures in the biological male that provide a physiological benefit. Hemoglobin levels are lowered by estrogen therapy, and consequently, maximum aerobic effort may be lower, but this parameter will only be manifested if testosterone levels are suppressed to levels within the biological female range and maintained for extended periods of time. Reported studies show it is difficult to continuously suppress testosterone in transgender women. Given that the percentage difference between medal placings at the elite level is normally less than 1%, there must be confidence that an elite transwoman athlete retains no residual advantage from former testosterone exposure, where the inherent advantage depending on sport could be 10–30%. Current scientific evidence can not provide such assurances and thus, under abiding rulings, the inclusion of transwomen in the elite female division needs to be reconsidered for fairness to female-born athletes.”
I own three pairs of knee sleeves. None of them were in my bag today. Good thing it was a light pause squat day. How’s my depth? I finally felt like I was getting deep enough. ⚪️⚪️⚪️ or 🔴🔴🔴?
. Squats: 465 lbs. x 1 Bench: 302.5 lbs. x 1 Deadlift: 445 lbs. x 1 . Good week of training, bench went way up from last week. Squats had me feeling fatigued af right after. Deadlifts slowly climbing again. #squat #bench #deadlift #barbellmedicine #startingstrength #powerlifting #usapl (at S&S Barbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmSCz1iJ7_x/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

WEIGHTLIFTING…
Well Hell. I never thought I’d be one of those folks that lost 120# and would slowly let it creep back on. Well I am. I’ve put back on almost half. I could list out a bunch of excuses but the fact is I’ve been slowly regaining since 2014. It really doesn’t take much, couple extra cheats and brews here and there in combination with reducing my cardio significantly, put on 5-6 pounds a year and bam!
It’s embarrassing but no point in crying about it now, I was there, I’m here now and still not near as bad as I was. So I’m going to list some future goals, use this as a training log and something to look back on for myself. One of the biggest things I miss from not blogging is the ability to look back and track trends and what was going on in life.
The picture:
Starting weight: 282.2
Body Fat 38%
Goal Weight: 235
Train: 5x a week, 4 days lifting, 1 day conditioning.
Cardio: 40 mins daily total. (walk/bike/hike)
Food: Hit protein, don’t go over total calories.
Weekly weigh ins.
The goal:
Hit a National qualifying total USPA drug tested Nationals at my next meet in August 22.
Compete at Drug Tested Nats in November 22 here in StL.
Continue working back to my weight class. 100 or 110kg.
Hit a National QT for USAPL Raw Nats in 23.
Compete at Raw Nats 23 or 24 as Master 2 (eeep)
OK I’ve said it out loud so now I have to do it. I’ve hooked back up with my old coach who has national level coaching experience and helped me go 9/9 in 2019. I’ve realized I can’t do this alone, I need accountability. One thing I must do differently is become a powerlifter. I’m not a powerlifter, I powerlift as a form of training and gym therapy. When I look at the successful lifters my age, they do this all year round, they take care of their body, when they’re not in prep they’re still sticking to training. Maybe not lifting heavy but sticking to the plan. I’ve not done that. Post meet I’m either in the gym doing stupid shit or totally changing my training. I take two steps back, one forward, that ain’t gonna get it.
. Squat: 467.5 lbs. x 1 Bench: 305 lbs. x 2 Deadlift: 462 lbs. x 1 . Besides my grip slipping on deadlifts, this was a solid week of training. Bench has been goated this block, doing reps in the 300s at a below max RPE. Squats have been shooting up to the point where I’m doing back off sets in the 400s, which is crazy considering I was doing singles at 405 lbs. not too long ago. 🤔🙏😳 #squat #bench #deadlift #barbellmedicine #startingstrength #powerlifting #usapl (at S&S Barbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clb3wwVA9gz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
It was a chilly, sometimes sunny, afternoon at the Barn.
Warmup #1
Armando led us in one of his patented mobility sessions. Everyone participated except Robert who maintained a loud conversation disturbing Ed for the entire warmup. Elite athletes are always in a pre-warmed up state because they exist Games Ready.
5 / 4 / 3 / 2 / 1 Of Each
Pull-Ups
Push-Ups
Squats
Armando started got those of us interested in this brief warmup . A Grand Total of 15 Reps each of 3 bodyweight exercises.

Notes:
Faith (The Kid) is industriously taking orders for Girl Scout Cookies. She already has an impressive list of orders, but see a Goodrich about placing your order. You don't have to pay until you get them (I Think). Great cookies for a greater cause.
World's Fittest CrossFitter Justin Medeiros came in 2nd in a USAPL (POWERLIFT) in his 90 kg Body-Weight Class. They score by adding the 3 contested lifts (Squat/Bench Press/Deadlift), and he totaled 1416 lbs. This was especially impressive since it was a "RAW" event...no Bench Shirts or Squat Suits, and no grip assistance devices...and there were 3 judges on every lift to make certain there were "No Reps" if applicable. I assume he wasn't on any PED's.
There has been discussions at the Barn suggesting that we only have 1 workout on Saturday, and 1 workout on Sunday. Please be thinking and talking amongst yourselves. We will vote at 6:30 PM this Thursday.
