We already have laws on the books that say that the U.S. government can’t send weapons and military funding to countries committing gross human rights violations. The President and Congress should not give Israel billions in unconditional aid that could fuel this conflict’s expansion.

Cargo ship hits Baltimore's Key Bridge, bringing it down. Rescuers are looking for people in water
BALTIMORE (AP) — A container ship rammed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing it to snap in a few places and plunge into the river below. Several vehicles fell into the chilly waters, and rescuers were initially searching for at least seven people. Two people were pulled from the waters under the Francis Scott Key Bridge, one in serious condition, according to Baltimore Fire…

hey, tumblrinas!
right now, the north eastern united states (vermont in particular) is dealing with *extensive* flood damage. people started kayaking across town to help their friends, families, and neighbors. businesses and homes have been *devastated.* this flood was worse than hurricane irene in 2011. we haven’t had anything this bad since 1929. we have volunteers helping all over the state, and no deaths have been reported as of now, but the combination of water damage, mud, possible sewage, and land displacement means that it’s going to take a lot of people a lot of time and hard work to put things to rights.
if you’re able to do so, *please*, consider donating.
montpelier alive is a nonprofit dedicated to celebrating and helping the capitol of vermont. right now, they’re spearheading local community volunteering, and leading the charge to help in montpelier.
the vermont distaste recovery fund is a nonprofit organization created exactly for situations like this, where funds can be distributed across vermont as needed.
there are also plenty of gofundmes for specific people and businesses that could really use financial support. if you want to know exactly where your money is going, this is a great way to donate.
other ways to help:
if you’re in the new england area:
- consider volunteering to help a clean-up crew near you. vermont got hit the worst, but there are plenty of other places that have also faced damage from the recent storms. remember to sign up with a volunteering or relief organization. you cannot help if you need to be rescued yourself. be safe, and be smart.
- find local food and water drives. the university of vermont is currently working on getting bottled water, gatorade, and granola bars to heavily affected areas, and other places closer to you may have something similar.
if you’re not nearby:
- spread the word! if you can’t help financially, someone else out there can. keeping yourself informed and encouraging others to help as much as they’re able is important.
- consider political action. push your local legislature to take preventative measures against climate disasters in your area. write letters, send emails, annoy them until they can’t ignore you and have to do something to help keep you and your community safe.
- create a plan/go bag for natural disasters in your area. with the climate crisis getting much worse, being prepared in the case of an emergency is more important than ever. having a plan for what to do in a crisis is helpful, and if you can, keeping a bag of necessities ready to grab and leave with in an emergency is going to help you get out faster, get further from danger, and keep yourself safe.
this is an example of how badly climate change is affecting us all. we’re going to be recovering from this for a long time, and the disasters we face are only going to get more extreme. stay safe, and support your community in any way you can. the only way we can fight this is together.

I need to vent about humanity.
I feel everything soo deeply. I was reading about the war going on . Big mistake but I started thinking about it and everything else in this world that we have absolutely no power of. Like the cost of living. Idk I'm just really sad cause there's all these problems with what seem like simple solutions but nothing ever changes. It's like nobody cares or wants the world to be a good place. War just makes people money, money gives more power. Power isn't what we need. I just keep thinking of all those babies and kids in Gaza who are scared, injured, just want their mom and for the guns to stop. I'm genuinely so angry that I can't do anything but complain. Everyone in the U.S is eating candy and dressed up as some bs while there's a child with a gash in her head looking for mommy.

Civil rights groups warn tourists about Florida in wake of 'hostile' laws
ORLANDO, Fla. — The NAACP over the weekend issued a travel advisory for Florida, joining two other civil rights groups in warning potential tourists that recent laws and policies championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.” The NAACP, long an advocate for Black Americans, joined the League of United…

TW mass shooting
It is so fucking jarring to see streets I used to call home on the news in a mass shooting, and now it's happened twice (El Paso, at a mall I used to go to; and now downtown Louisville, near where I used to drive my mom to work). Even though I haven't been personally affected-- no one I know has yet been involved-- it still is enough to send you into existential dread. I listened to part of the mayor's address and fucking cried.

Bonner General Health, the only hospital in Sandpoint, announced Friday that it will no longer provide obstetrical services to the city of more than 9,000 people, meaning patients will have to drive 46 miles for labor and delivery care.
The hospital’s board of directors and senior leadership called the decision emotional and difficult, and cited a loss of pediatricians, changing demographics and Idaho’s legal and political climate around health care as the reasons.
[...]
The release also said highly respected, talented physicians are leaving the state, and recruiting replacements will be “extraordinarily difficult.”
Idaho has one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country, with affirmative defenses in court only for documented instances of rape, incest or to save the pregnant person’s life. Physicians are subject to felony charges and the revocation of their medical licenses for violating the statute, which the Idaho Supreme Court in January determined is constitutional.
“The Idaho Legislature continues to introduce and pass bills that criminalize physicians for medical care nationally recognized as the standard of care,” the hospital’s news release said. “Consequences for Idaho physicians providing the standard of care may include civil litigation and criminal prosecution, leading to jail time or fines.”
Dr. Amelia Huntsberger, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Bonner General Health, said in an email to States Newsroom, a national nonprofit whose newsrooms include the Idaho Capital Sun in Boise, that she will soon leave the hospital and the state because of the abortion laws and the Legislature’s decision not to continue the state’s maternal mortality review committee.
