horses. I was a horse girl. I took riding lessons for like...4 years? I went to Girl Scout horseback riding camp. I had terrible anxiety as a child and hated sleepaway camp / couldn't even do slumber parties but for the horses, I braved it. I had a collection of those plastic horses that my barbies and polly pockets would ride. you can imagine.

How exactly is the were-kraken form triggered?

theres 3 ways a werekraken can be triggered:

Full moon: happens almost monthly, and if a blue moon occurs ( two full moons in one month ) the extra stress on the inkfish body can be dangerous.

At Will: If an werekraken is experienced enough, they can shift into werekraken at will. This lasts usually a couple of hours at most, and easier to come out of at will, unlike a forced one, which lasts two days and is much harder to come out of. Typically seen in middle-aged werekrakens, such as Callie and Marie's Moms.

Special Overload! Prefacing with a bit of canon lore here, specials are connected to emotions, as seen with Pearl's MC princess cannon in octo expansion, and in the Splatoon 2 Super Smash Bros splatfest art, where Pearl gets so upset that she charges her special. In the werekraken au, if this happens to a cursed inkfish and they don't make an effort to calm down, it can trip the signal to summon a werekraken, getting them stuck in form for 2 days, similar to a Full moon.

Using Callie as a model, some signs of a incoming shift include milk eyes, frothy mouth/drooling, being sometimes confused or unresponsive to langauges they typically speak, their form melting into ink, and occasionally an charged special effect where the tentacles glow and shine.

With the special overload, comes even more increased strength: an perfectly calm werekraken has lots of power, but the special overload gives an adrenline kick, which can be dangerous for everyone, including the Werekraken. The increased stress can make the heart fail, along with inksac failure.

So while it's pretty rare to happen, your average werekraken still might take precautions to not get too worked up. Even then, not everyone can control their emotions! Say if you're a young, 17 year old pop star. You and your cousin are having a intense fight, both of you pitted against each other, on live TV. After spitting back, the both of you, so angry with each other, you have to take a small break from filming, cause you started to trip the werekraken... hmm...
