The fact that people are SLEEPING on the amount of Vaggie angst that could be had with her religious trauma- I see NO ONE take advantage of it!
“Love Like you”, “Saint Bernard”, “RÄT” etc. The animatic potential is RIGHT THERE and I see NOTHING!

this is going to be a controversial take and i don’t know who needs to hear this, but just because you have religious trauma doesn’t mean you have the right to go and demonize everyone from that particular religion.
your trauma is yours and yours alone. you don’t have to “make it everyone’s problem” like how some of y’all put it. trauma is something you try to work through and eventually Get Over. not hold onto for the rest of your days as an excuse to be bitter towards an entire group of people.
sure you can criticize the institution that wronged you but lumping every single person of x faith or y faith together and then proceeding to bash them, shit on them, or overall just be a nasty person towards them is not right.

So you know how there are some people who like to attack/ vilify those who don't like Lae'zel and they try to paint it as a sexism thing or claim it's "because she's not conventionally attractive" or w/e and then bring up Astarion and Shadowheart "because they're racist too" in the same breath? I think I had a bit of an epiphany on this that needs to be shared. Putting content warnings here as well as in the tags just to make sure we're thoroughly covered: references to trama, physical and verbal abuse, SA, toxic family dynamics, religious trauma, and religious zealotry ahead. Also note that this doesn't just apply to people whose favorite character is Astarion and/ or Shadowheart, I'm just focusing on them since they're the ones people complaining about people not liking Lae'zel always bring up.
Okay, now with all that out of the way... I think the people who complain about people not liking Lae'zel but liking Astarion and Shadowheart and fixating on the whole "but they're racist too" argument miss some pretty major points regarding why a lot of people like Astarion and Shadowheart and how the way Lae'zel treats you in Act 1 is a major factor. A lot of people like Astarion and Shadowheart because on some level, they relate to them. Maybe they came from a household where one or more adult was abusive (physically or verbally), narcissistic, overbearing and/ or controlling. Or maybe it was a friend or romantic partner, or more than one, who used them and abused them and treated them like dirt. Or maybe they're an SA survivor. Or maybe they have religious trauma, and maybe that religious trauma is exacerbated by the fact that they have people in their lives who refuse to change their views, or even double down on them, even when shown evidence that contradicts their beliefs. Or maybe it's some combination of these.
Even the reasons why Astarion doesn't like the Gur and Shadowheart doesn't like Githyanki is steeped in trauma: it was a group of Gur beating Astarion nearly to death that lead to him being tricked by Cazador into becoming his spawn (and if he hadn't been turned into a vampire, he would have died), and Shadowheart makes multiple references to the fact that she saw githaynki cut down her comrades during her mission with some serious brutality.
A lot of these people who identify with Astarion and Shadowheart because of their own past traumas have promised themselves that they're never going to let anyone teat them that way, speak to them that way, try to control them, act like they own them, etc. etc. ever again. I know that's what happened to me. Now let's look at how Lae'zel treats you in Act 1, shall we? She's verbally abusive. When you try to talk to her, she simply replies to you with "Speak" as if you're some kind of dog. When she first propositions you for sex, she's still at her most abusive towards you, but because you fight good, she wants to lick your skin, taste your sweat, and "take what's hers." Even once the entire party knows--because we literally all see it in action with our own eyeballs--that the only thing preventing us from becoming either brain washed slaves to the Absolute or just straight up becoming mind flayers is the Astral Prism, she still keeps trying to take it and return it to the githyanki, even going so far as to try and kill Shadowheart for it. Even when her loyalty to her culture nearly gets her killed in the Zaithisk, and you tell her the true nature of it, she refuses to accept the reality and tries to blame the doctor, who she accuses of being a traitor, rather than accept that no, actually, it was working exactly as intended. It takes Voss showing up at our camp after everything else that had happened, and telling her the truth about Orpheus--something we had already been told about and found books covering before that point--to get her to even consider the fact that um actually maybe Vlaakith is evil (something that coming face to face with her and her nearly killing us didn't even convince her of).
All of these things I've described about Lae'zel in Act 1 are things that can be incredibly triggering to someone who has experienced any of the traumatic experiences I described above that has resulted in people identifying with and latching onto Astarion and Shadowheart. And like....does Lae'zel get better in Acts 2 and 3? Sure. But by that point, the damage has been done. And like in real life, Lae'zel isn't owed anything just because by Act 2 she's clearing the bear minimum of not being straight up abusive to your character. People aren't required to stop ranking her as their least favorite character, or straight up not liking her, after the way she treats you for the first third of the game. Especially not when that "first third" can easily be the part of the game you spend the most time in, with you spending dozens of hours in that part of the game, which also means they're spending the most time with Lae'zel before her character improves at all. Like I'm not saying that the ven diagram between "people who relate to Astarion and Shadowheart because of trauma" and "people who don't like Lae'zel" is a perfect circle, but the overlap is probably a way rounder oval shape than people who are too busy insisting that if she were a handsome man she would totally be popular appreciate. Before I wrap this up, I want to touch on that last part because I think it's important to address. I've seen people make that claim, but would Lae'zel really be more popular if she were a guy? I haven't seen a single person who makes this claim say they would like Lae'zel more if she were a guy. What I have seen is multiple people say in response that they would actually like her less if she had been a guy, which is honestly also how I feel.
Maybe this is something worth exploring in a separate post someday, but I would actually argue that the only reason Lae'zel works as a party member at all is because she's a woman. Flip her gender and she becomes an abusive man who treats you like you're beneath him and who says he wants to taste your skin and your sweat and claim ownership of your body as the first "nice" thing he ever says to you. As a woman who already has to deal with the general sexism of our society (including lawmakers trying to take ownership of our bodies and make medical decisions for us instead of leaving it between us and our doctors), especially a woman with multiple male-dominated hobbies, that's something I would find incredibly triggering--(even more so than I already found Lae'zel's sex proposition, which already made me super uncomfortable and had me thinking "wow imagine if a guy said this"). That's not "edgy and mysterious;" a man who treats you poorly but still thinks he's entitled to you/ your body, would be the poster boy for toxic masculinity, and I can promise you that more people would have taken issue with a character like that than they do with Lae'zel as she is.
Especially people with trauma like what I described at the beginning of this..

Shadowheart and Religious Trauma
Warnings: MAJOR spoilers for Shadowheart's companion quest, religious abuse/trauma, anxiety, grief
Note: I'll probably revisit this one day when it's not so fresh in my mind and hopefully I'll make more sense then. For now, these are my thoughts, jumbled and raw
One of the most heartbreaking things for me while playing BG3 was Shadowheart's story and how analogous it is to religious deconstruction.
I was raised in a Christian cult – I won't go in depth about the abuses I suffered within, but I will say that the pain is always with me, much like the curse of Shar that lingers within Shadowheart until you make your final decisions in the House of Grief.
Shadowheart travels an arduous path from Shar's embrace to freedom; she's zealous when you first meet her, having been stripped of her entire identity. Shar and her followers have not only taken her name, her memories, and caused her immeasurable mental and physical harm; they have also taken her family, warped her only memory of her father into a source of paralyzing fear.
If you establish a bond with Shadowheart, you see her start to question the curse bestowed on her. She begins to doubt the "lesson" her goddess must be teaching her. And then you meet the Nightsong, the ultimate test of her faith.
If Shadowheart spares Dame Aylin's life, she turns her back on her goddess and the only community she's ever known up until the tadpole brought you together. She doesn't have to make this decision alone. She has you and your other companions standing with her. She spares the Nightsong and rejects the cruel deity she's spent her life serving.
Shadowheart appears more hopeful, more determined than ever. With your help, she's going to find her parents and save them from the goddess.
You fight side by side through the dark disciples and the Mother Superior in the House of Grief. You get the key to the dungeon. You find her parents. There's an impossibly brief moment where you think we did it. And then Shar shows herself.
She tells Shadowheart to make the choice between her own freedom and her parents' lives. This decision devastated me. I had to close the game. I had to take a breath and calm down. Because I had to make that decision too.
I had to decide between my own life and a relationship with the people who raised me. I could come out and reject everything I'd been taught, severing the bonds between myself and the people who perpetuated my pain; or I could carry on in service until it killed me.
When Shadowheart was presented the options, there was no question in my mind as to what I was going to choose. But I didn't know if that was because it was what was best for me or for her.
This is where Shadowheart's story diverts the most from my own. Her parents wanted her to be free. Their faith in Selûne would transform them, bring them peace, and keep them close to her. Knowing this, I urged Shadowheart to take their lives, putting them at rest. She did.
Shadowheart is free from the Lady of Loss now. But she grieves. She'll never hear her parents' laughs. She'll never feel their comforting touches or receive their careful wisdom. That pain is real, and it'll never disappear. But the hope is that she won't be alone. She has your merry band of weirdos after all.
That's what has saved me too. My friends, the queer and neurodivergent communities, support from my therapist. It'll always hurt, but with their help I'll survive it.
Larian is such an amazing team. The care they've put into telling stories of survival, grief, love, healing, and tough decisions is so amazing. I'm grateful for their hard work and creativity. The moments of hurt and the moments of catharsis will stay with me for a long, long time.

Neurodivergent, traumas and of sorts headcanons for creepypasta
Why? cuz obviously a bunch of traumatized psychos who live in a manor together can't not be neurodivergent and/or mentally ill in some way.
part 1 of some. idk when i'll make more but i like these.
feat. Jeff the Killer, Homicidal Liu + Sully, Jane the Killer and Ticci Toby
TW: Trauma discussion, Child abuse, PTSD discussion.
Jeff the Killer
Jeff and Liu grew up in a heavily catholic family, so you can imagine for a very emo and punk kid like Jeff it was hard to deal with.
Jeff, in my au, has Bipolar disorder, beside anger issues, and due to his family (excluding Liu) belief it was "the devil doing this to their son", he is neglected any sort of mental help.
Due to this religious trauma of being dragged to churches and being treated with physical violence for his likings and attitude, Jeff never learned a good coping mechanism, and resorts to violence to relief himself from his negative emotions.
When he is in a specially depressive episode, he tends to isolate himself and do the bare minimum to be alive.
But on his maniac episodes, he tends to be extra aggressive and violent. It was in one of those that he did his first killing spree.
Homicidal Liu and Sully
Like i said, Liu and Jeff grew up in a very catholic family. While Jeff's likings collided a lot with their parent's beliefs, Liu's were more accepted, albeit reluctantly.
Their parents had very high expectations of Liu, and whenever Liu didn't meet those, he was phisically punished.
Liu, was very distant from both of his parent's, due to fear of them, and he also didn't have many friends due to the excessive times his family moved in and out of cities.
Liu due to the physical abuse, reclusiveness and lack of attachment to anyone, including Jeff on his earlier years of life developed DID.
He only learned about DID, after Jeff's attack, when he was 15, though.
Besides DID, and him meeting with Sully, his protector, Liu also has heavy insomnia issues and PTSD from beds. Due to that he has a coffee addiction.
Sully, after being split, held a trauma holder role on the system. He grew very angry at Liu's parents, and slowly but surelly started having a more protector role, not only for Liu but, at the time, for Jeff.
After Jeff's attack, Sully grew even more bitter and split himself again, his trauma holder role staying with one part and himself, Sully, staying as a protector. That's when Liu noticed how sociopathic Sully grew.
Jane the Killer / Jane Arkensaw
Jane, before the Jeff incident, was completely normal. The max she had was one or other little insecurities with her appearance, but she had a safe and healthy childhood and family.
She was shy, but nothing that would be deemed worrysome.
After what Jeff did, whoever, her insecurities with her appearance ran out of the roof.
She always covers as much of her body as she can, too worried about anyone seeing her burnt scars and almost leathery skin.
She has an immense hate for Jeff, obviously, but she is extremely empathic with the ones that got hurt by him, including inside the manor by some reason and other people who were hunting him down, like Sully for example.
After her kidnapping, and even before that, after Jeff's burning alive, she grew a extreme anxiety disorder, and regularly does trades with Ann to get medication for it without having to notice Slenderman or the proxies.
She has heavy traumas of kidnapping, torture and tends to have panic attacks when assigned something like that.
Ticci Toby
Toby, of course, has Tourette's syndrome, as stated by his killer name.
Though in this au, Toby's main motor tics are more concentrated on his face, like multiple repeated blinking. Other tics he has is jerking his head to the left, stomping his feet, and turning his eyes around.
On the vocal tics category, he mainly ends up repeating sounds, while rarely he may repeat a word or whistle.
He also has CIPA, and that is what made him be so enthranced by fire since a young age. He didn't feel the burnt or the hurt, he only saw the pretty colour of fire.
Toby has some heavy trauma of cars, which results in most of his missions he walking to his victims. He only accepts entering on a car if another proxy is the one driving, and he can't be on the front.
Toby also has heavy trauma of drunk people, so most times on the comemorations inside the manor, he will stay in his room or outside putting something on fire.
He copes with most of his traumas and fears and honestly anything he can by putting stuff on fire or throwing stuff at people and getting away with it by being a proxy.
Happyness is in the little things <3/j
Toby also has ADHD, with an emphasys on the hiperactive.
He has trouble remembering stuff that are not written down, so if you hear an alarm going off in the middle of the night, it's probably Toby trying to remember something.
i'mma stop here because i got tired lol but this was fun.

IT'S THE BOYYYY, MY [deceased ;-;] BOY-
My heart hurts whenever I write about him I'm gonna cry but he's so perfect to me you have no idea
Ok, so, I have written so much on this man because of how overly complicated I made Buster's entire family situation. But I can't. Share. A single. Crumb. Of. It. And it's killing me. Guys, I'm dying. I'm simply gonna perish if I don't write about him. So. I'm gonna headcanon dump, heehee :> [gonna do this with a bunch of other characters once I get art for them going ~_~] [I look at my drafts and weep-]
TD!Charley:
Age: 47 [deceased] Height: 3' 02" [96cm] Male - He/Him Sexuality: Aroace Build: H A T
The name is a headcanon in itself. Charley. He was never given a real canon name for whatever reason.
It just felt like it fit
Oh boy,
Ok, heavy lore time-
TW: Mentions of religious trauma and [briefly] kidnapping
[there's a fluff tab if you're wanting to skip all that]
So for a quick lore-dump, there was a HUGE war between the different animals [mammals, reptiles, and birds being the most prominent groups] that lasted from 1903-1955, before finally cutting off because a bunch of animals had practically gone extinct
Koalas being one of them
And Charley was born in late 1956, right after the war had ended, so yeah. Generational trauma's real rough-
Plus his hometown [all Koalas btw] was extremely religious and controlling over him, and he wasn't even allowed to buy his own clothes until he started to carve out his own life in Calatonia
The only thing they let him do was play music, usually with the idea that he'd be playing for the church band
[which he never did]
He was set up on arranged dates, made to feel like he was wrong for not wanting a relationship, and ridiculed for his desire to have a different life in the city- along with a lot of other things I probably couldn't fit into this post
He has a sister, Holly Moon, who is 4 years younger than him, who was seen as a golden child because she always listened and did everything their parents asked
[Parents being Darrick and Kara, for more TD lore]
He had a horrible family life before sprinting away at age 18 to Calatonia to hopefully make it big
This is where he met animals who weren't Koalas for the first time
Let me reiterate that- first time
[he'd read about other animals and seen what a few of them looked like in pictures, but never the real thing]
He learned the true meaning behind the words his family always spoke
"Make a family, there aren't many of us left"
Yeah, he was the only Koala in Calatonia for a good minute
Which kinda sent him spiraling-
Imaging you growing up in a small gated community, where you're a human around other humans, and then you leave and find out that there aren't any humans left and the rest of the world has been populated by aliens or something
He was very curious at first, which got him into some trouble
He met Harry after almost getting poached/getting ganged up on and almost kidnapped. Harry saved him, took him to calm down at his restaurant for the night, and the two quickly became friends
Ok, fluff time
Meeting Harry for the first time, the thing he offered Charley was a sandwich, which would start Charley's "give sandwich = I care about you" thing
Like his go-to way of making friends after this encounter would be to meet somewhere for sandwiches
It became a comfort food, and an introduction into other flavors besides the basic food groups + eucalyptus
This little quirk got passed down to Buster
Amazing cook
Like, he invented a couple of the recipes on the menu at Harry's Bar [despite having a diet of mostly eucalyptus, which is poisonous]
Even back in his hometown with his limited ingredients, he was fantastic, but after learning that there were other foods, he got a little obsessed
He has a cookbook he put together [which got passed down to Buster, who cannot cook for the life of him lmao]
Harry tried to get him to go to culinary school or something, but Charley always insisted on loving his little bundle of odd jobs in Calatonia [including the carwash, which was his baby]
After coming to Calatonia, making his home in a shady little apartment complex [which he ABSOLUTELY ADORED], getting a job, and finally getting his first-ever paycheck, he immediately went thrifting
Which is where he got his raggedy hat and patchy coat
And learned what a turtleneck was
He taught Buster the art of thrifting too :D
He dresses like he's homeless by choice [mostly]
[money's always tight]
Back to the odd jobs that he got instead of getting a real job- Charley always hated "luxurious" things if that makes sense. Not only did it remind him of home, but he's just a minimalist in general
If he doesn't need it, he won't take it
Modest guy [opposite to his entire family ~_~]
The hat is kinda a symbol of his independence and freedom in a way, so that's a little sweet
He never takes his hat or coat off really, even in the hot summer days in Calatonia
Harry always has to remind him to drink water [woah, Koala moment]
Oh yeah, Koala stuff-
Harry ends up helping out Charley with the complete lack of Eucalyptus products in Calatonia by ordering it in with his usual imported restaurant food, and then just giving it to him
Harry insists on paying for it all, despite Charley's objections
Charley always gives monstrous tips when eating at Harry's to balance things out
He's actually pretty tall for a Koala
He made good friends with all of the waiters and staff and musicians at Harry's, and was always there for the music nights where Harry'd get someone to play atmospheric stuff on stage
You see this in the first movie
Charley's actually really great on the guitar, and has a very nice voice [I don't have a voice claim yet ;-;;;;;] so he was eventually given the offer to try playing in front of a crowd at Harry's. Which he took
[And Harry made him take money for it, of course]
Had no intention to have kids, but ended up taking in Buster due to family drama and strange circumstances [later explained in Tone Deaf] [also why they have different funky patterns btw! :DDD]
Please, it's so complicated-
He quickly fell in love with the idea of show business after seeing some street performers, and eventually got over his discomfort with doing illegal things [the idea of it being a sin really had him in a chokehold for a while-] and grew into his true personality of "very chill and very shady charlatan" after a few years away from his hometown
Actually, it was his urge to steal a ticket to see a show at the theater that drove him to get over it all
Learned how to pick locks and pockets to scrounge around enough money to get by
Charley and Harry were best friends. Practically brothers
To the point of Harry being called "uncle Harry" by young Buster
Charley was the best man at Harry's wedding to his Panda wife, Claire. Buster was given the honor of being both the flower boy and ring bearer lmao [he pulled it off]
Claire definitely mothered both Charley and Buster quite a bit
Back to Charley living in the apartment complex, he made good friends with an old Lizard who lived next door-
Yeah, Miss Crawley [Irene Crawley]
After Harry realized that Buster was an absolute demon child, Charley tried asking her to babysit instead
She must've had the magic touch or something, because he was perfectly behaved with her
Harry was speechless
Buster was absolutely a problem child, and Charley would frequently get calls from school about him [especially in elementary]
[half of the trouble he got into was due to bullies, but this ain't about him 🤭]
Charley taught Buster how to commit crime, and play guitar
And when he got older, the two would duet together at Harry's
[I'm crying it's so sweet]
Crawley would always bring homemade candies around to give to Buster when she came over to visit with Charley, specifically Turkish Delight
She eventually taught him [with lots of hand-holding] how to make the candy himself. If left alone, he'd just set things on fire and eat the chocolate chips plain though :D
She lost her lover in the war, and even before that, struggled with infertility problems [they were different species- working with the idea of a Gila Monster] so she never had any of the children she had wanted before the war basically ruined her life
She adored that child and never accepted pay
[she was paid by the government anyway since she was a war vet]
All of the money that Charley would slip into her pocket, she'd either secretly give right back, or spend it all on Buster
She was like a mother to him
Still is
She offered to help with the theater after Charley realized that the place didn't just come with staff
Charley and Buster's bond was basically unbreakable
Charley would always stand up to the school system whenever they treated Buster unjustly
[Trust me, there was a lot of prejudice against Koalas and other endangered species, no matter how small or harmless they seemed. People fear what they don't know, and to say Koalas are an oddity would be an understatement-]
[Like even irl, they're Marsupials, sure- but they're so different that they've been given a classification all to themselves called Phascolarctidae. They're so alone in the animal kingdom, it's not even funny. Their closest "relative" is the Wombat, and even then barely]
[Give me another animal that's even remotely similar to Koalas appearance-wise. Their facial structure, the double-thumbs, massive ears, the fact that they can only eat one thing, and it's poisonous [catch me writing Buster poisoning someone with eucalyptus >:D]- yeah, they're super interesting to work with. And of course, I give them hardships for it ~_~]
[Everyone that saw Buster and Charley just immediately knew they were endangered just because of how alien they looked]
["freaks"]
[They just rolled with it]
[Well, Buster was always bothered by it, but Charley was always there to tell him that it should be something to be proud of. Didn't always work all the way]
[I'll talk about Buster later, don't you worry]
[Ok enough with the gushing about Koala facts in brackets-]
Buster would also stand up for Charley during family gatherings [which they eventually just stopped going to entirely] because Charley would just freeze up and not say anything whenever people started fighting with him
✨trauma✨
The two protected each other is my point pretty much
Ok, for a rough timeline:
[1903 - 1955] - Great War [1956] - Charley was born [1960] - Holly was born [1974] - Charley ran away to Calatonia [1980] - Buster was born [1988] - Charley took Buster in [1990] - Harry meets Claire [1994] - Harry and Claire get married [1997] - Theater was sold to Charley and quickly opened [2003] - Charley is killed
It's fucking tragic how he dies
Like, him and Buster were literally in the middle of planning the show when Buster got the call
Late too
He couldn't get to the landline at first because he was busy with set design, and actually saw it a LOT later, which- yeah. Cue horrific amounts of stress as he bikes as fast as he can to the ER
"Where's dad!??" he's in the hospital bucko
Why must I kill all the characters I love-
Charley'd just gone out to get some supplies from like, home depot or something, and then yeah. Dead
Buster could never finish the show, so it sits collecting dust in the attic now
Grief made him unable to write much, which is how he eventually went into debt too
The whole thing with them is absolutely tragic, oh boy-
Can't wait to draw the funeral scene
Ok, so I keep forgetting what's been posted and what's still a draft, so sorry if something just- absolutely jumps out of nowhere here. I think I've mentioned the war before? And Poachers- I hope I at least mentioned Poachers-
Well, if you didn't know before, you do now ''':D
Thanks for reading

Rotating some of the themes of The Wailing in my brain. How people who are in lower income households, the sick and the desperate are often taken advantage of by "spiritual gurus" who charge ridiculous sums of money to fix their problems. Thinking about how the other option that the main character had was to trust the Catholics, who had already preyed upon multiple generations of people who were traumatized by war and occupation. Thinking about how the actual entity that wanted to help the main character was a local land spirit that was deemed evil by the guru that the main character had trusted, and how that symbolizes the demonization of native practices by outside influences and "spirituality for profit." Rotating the fact that this movie had a tragic ending, not just because of the fate of the main character and his family, but because shit like this happens every day to real people.
I need to talk about Proton's religious trauma more, because it's there, and it goes hand in hand with the racism he endured as a child, and still has to deal with today.

I’m so glad I’m out of that church. A friend told me that in todays sermon the pastor was basically telling people that depression and anxiety aren’t real.
So, i decided to take a listen and holy shit!
He said that an increase in depression and anxiety are a result of people trusting in themselves and trying to help themselves. (Side note: he clearly doesn’t understand how averages work either - he went on a tangent about the number of people having a decimal)
He said that the only self-help book that people should read is the Bible - otherwise you’re giving in to the devil and trying to help yourself instead of trusting God.
And he likened people with depression and anxiety to people who were literally possessed by demons .
…no wonder I never liked going to church there.
The church I went to today had a sermon on the same text and I got a completely different message. Lol. I even got out of the text & sermon that me getting out of that place without saying goodbye is something Jesus did.
