You know why Aryan being casted as Grover is such a big thing for desi folks
That’s because we finally have a desi character who isn’t depicted as the perfect child.
Desi characters in shows are heavily stereotyped with the whole thing of being overachievers, always known as the smart but annoying kid, the academically strong but physically weak. Who’s constantly trying to be the perfect 24/7.
But Grover? No, he isn’t perfect. He made mistakes, he can be clumsy, he’s not an overachiever, and he definitely might not know a thing about calculus. He’s funny and a lil goofy, And he definitely isn’t weak.
And that’s great! That’s really great. People will learn and know. Desi kids won’t have to constantly try to fit in to this weird crappy persona that some shows created for the sake of comedic relief disguising it as “representation”

TV on TV!
Part 1 ~ The TV Shows of the Lucyverse
Tumblr media
Although it may seem redundant, the worlds created by Lucille Ball on radio and television frequently created and mentioned other TV shows!  Here are a few.
Tumblr media
“Television” (1949)
Liz and George’s visit to their next-door neighbors, the Stones, turns into a disaster when George tries to repair the Stones’ new television set by himself.
“Television throws ‘My Favorite Husband’ for a loss, and the whole neighborhood into night courts.” ~  Mason City Globe-Gazette radio listing
Tumblr media
“Too Many Television Sets” (1949)
Liz (Lucilll Ball) can’t get George (Richard Denning) interested in buying a television set, until they spend an evening at the Atterburys, who have one. With his interest piqued, George arranges one be sent over on trial. Little does he know Liz has done the same thing - as have the Atterbury’s!
LIZ: “I never know who won the fights or what Kukla and Fran are doing to Ollie.”
“Kukla, Fran, and Ollie” was a children’s television show created by Burr Tillstrom that aired from 1947 to 1957. Kukla and Ollie were puppets and actress Fran Allison interacted with them. The show won a 1949 Peabody Award and went on to win two Emmys.
IRIS: “I did my knitting last night with Ed Wynn; I had breakfast with Tex and Jinx; and this afternoon I took a bath with Hopalong Cassidy!”
“The Ed Wynn Show” was a variety show broadcast from September 22,1949 to July 4, 1950 on the CBS Television Network. Comedian and former vaudevillian Ed Wynn was the star of the program. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz made their television debut as a couple on the show on Christmas Eve 1949, just a few weeks after this episode of “My Favorite Husband”.
“Tex and Jinx” were Eugenia “Jinx” Falkenberg and her husband John “Tex” McCary. The couple were popular radio hosts who began on television in January 1947.
“Hopalong Cassidy” made the leap from books and movies to the small screen on June 24, 1949, kicking off the legacy of the Western on television. These were not new, but simply cut-down versions of the feature films that were in cinemas from 1935 to 1948.
Joe warns the Coopers not to sit behind Iris because they only have a ten inch screen. (Liz adds that Iris has a 16″ neck.) He advises that they visit the Schraders who watch “Pantomime Quiz” and serve sandwiches. “Pantomime Quiz” (later titled “Stump the Stars”), was a television game show hosted by Mike Stokey. Running from 1947 to 1959, it has the distinction of being one of the few television series to air on all four TV networks during the Golden Age of Television. Lucille Ball is reported to have been on the series in December 1947, which would make it her television debut.
Tumblr media
“Liz Appears on Television” (1950)
Liz and Iris (Bea Benadaret) make an appearance on a television show celebrating Friendship Week. Their friendship is tested, though, when they discover they've bought the same dress for the occasion. The name of the show is  “Love Your Neighbor” the host of which is played by Frank Nelson. The episode mentions two of the same television programs as “Too Many Television Sets” a year earlier.
GEORGE: “I can see it now: ‘Kukla, Fran and Lizzie!”
LIZ: “Try Hopalong Cassidy. He looks good next to a horse!”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (1952)
RICKY: “You’ve never even been on a television show!” LUCY: “Maybe not, but I’ve watched them a lot.”
Lucy gets hired to do a TV commercial on Ricky’s new show, not realizing the health tonic she has to consume is full of alcohol!
LUCY: “When Ricky comes home tonight you’re going to turn on that television set, and you know who’s going to be on it?”  FRED: “Well, I can only hope it’s Faye Emerson.”
Faye Emerson was a very glamorous stage and screen actress turned TV hostess who had her own variety show. She wore low-cut gowns bedecked with jewelry and had bleach blonde hair pulled back in a tight bun.
Tumblr media
The TV show Ricky hosts is titled “Your Saturday Night Variety”.  You can see Lucille Ball waiting in the wings, with the living room set behind her!  The TV camera has had its identifying information redacted and replaced by TVC (Television Camera)!
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Ricky on the Radio” (1952)
When their TV breaks down, the gang tunes in to a radio quiz show. Surprisingly, Ricky correctly guesses the answers to all of the questions, so the next day Lucy signs them up to be on the show. Sitting the radio atop the malfunctioning TVV set, the gang stares intently at the radio, just as they would television. Before the TV breaks down, the foursome are watching a movie, despite poor reception.
LUCY: “That little girl is Margaret O'Brien, isn’t it?” RICKY: “Look again - it’s Shirley Temple.” FRED: “Look again - it’s Mary Pickford!”
Tumblr media
“New Neighbors” (1952)
“That’s pretty corny dialogue, even for television. Well, it’s a living!”
New neighbors have just moved in to 323 East 68th Street. When Lucy gets stuck hiding in their closet, she overhears the couple practicing their lines for a TV show and jumps to conclusion that they are foreign spies! Hayden Rorke and K.T. Stevens play the acting couple.
Tumblr media
“The Handcuffs” (1952)
To keep Ricky home, Lucy handcuffs them together - but then doesn’t have the key. Ricky needs to host a TV show that evening - “Your Favorite Celebrity Guest Stars on TV”.  Lucy has no choice but to be part of the act - if only her left arm!
Tumblr media
Ricky is interviewed and introduced by Veola Vonn, real-life wife of Frank Nelson.
“Readers keepers, losers go look at television!” ~ The Black Eye (1953)
Tumblr media
“Ricky and Fred Are TV Fans” (1953)
Lucy and Ethel feel the boys are ignoring them to watch the fights on television. They go to elaborate lengths to stop their obsession. The championship boxing match that Ricky and Fred are watching pits 'The Kid' against Murphy. A heavyweight boxer named Irish Bob Murphy famously fought Jake LaMotta in June 1952. Kid Gavilán was a welterweight boxer from (unsurprisingly) Cuba, who was world champion in 1952. Naturally Ricky bets on 'The Kid', while Irishman Fred is in Murphy's corner.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress” (1953)
“We have a whole half hour on television!”
Lucy and Ethel are excited to appear on TV with their club, until they buy the same dress, which tests their “Friendship”.
Tumblr media
Ricky’s solo on the TV show is "Vaya con Dios.” When Ricky is introducing his song, he says “It’s become quite popular in the last couple of months.”
Tumblr media
“Baby Pictures” (1953)
Trying to impress the Ricardos about his TV station’s offering of motion pictures Charlie Appleby says:
CHARLIE: “We’ve got the newest moving pictures in town. I bought a block of films yesterday, and I want to tell you that they’re going to make television stars out of some of the actors. Now, just remember their names: Conway Tearle and Mabel Normand.”
Both were silent film stars and died in the 1930s!
Tumblr media
“Million Dollar Idea” (1954)
Lucy bottles her own salad dressing, then she and Ethel go on TV to sell it.
Tumblr media
They appear on “The Dickie Davis Show,” a four-hour daily TV program produced at the station run by Caroline Appleby's husband, Charlie. Frank Nelson plays Dickie Davis.
Tumblr media
“The Charm School” (1954)
The episode opens with a party where the men are in one room and the women in the other. At the party, the men talk about how soon color might be introduced on television.
BILL: “Well, there are two schools of thought on that matter. Some people think it’s just around the corner. Others think it’s gonna be a year or two.”
In reality, it was just six months away - but not on CBS and not on “I Love Lucy.”  Ricky says he read an article by Harry Ackerman, a  TV producer who supported the filming of “I Love Lucy” in front of a live studio audience.
Tumblr media
“Home Movies” (1954)
“If I want to see old movies, I’ll watch television.”
When his feelings get hurt that no one is interested in his home movies, Ricky refuses to include Lucy, Fred and Ethel in his new TV pilot film. Lucy, however, has a plan to get into the action anyway!
Tumblr media
“Ricky’s Hawaiian Vacation” (1954)
Lucy plans to win a trip to Hawaii on a television quiz show so that she can go with Ricky on a work trip.
Tumblr media
The TV show is called “Be A Good Neighbor” and it is hosted by Freddy Fillmore, who has finally made the leap from radio to television. In reality, many radio shows made the transition to television during the early 1950s.
Tumblr media
“The Black Wig” (1954)
When Ethel tries on Lucy’s wig, Fred says it looks more like life with Luigi.
“Life With Luigi” was a radio comedy that transferred to television. It premiered on CBS one season after “I Love Lucy,” but was not a success, lasting only a year before briefly returning to radio. One of the 'Italian' characters was played by Alan Reed, who later voiced Fred Flintstone. Two years earlier, both “Luigi” and “Lucy” were part of “Stars in the Eye”, a 1952 CBS special that celebrated the opening of Television City Studios.
Tumblr media
“Tennessee Ernie Hangs On” (1954)
The gang and Ernie sing on television to make money to send him home.
“Millikan's Chicken-Mash Hour” was a fictional country music TV program, but there were real-life examples as well, the first ever called “Village Barn,” broadcast from 1948 to 1950 from a New York City nightclub. Others included “Hayloft Hoedown,” “ABC Barn Dance,” “Saturday Night Jamboree,” “Windy City Jamboree,” “The Old American Barn Dance,” and “Midwestern Hayride” - all on rival networks. The most famous entry into the genre, “Hee Haw,” did air on CBS, but didn't come along until 1969.
Tumblr media
“Mr. and Mrs. TV Show” (1954)
“This is going to be one of the biggest television programs to hit town in years!”
Ricky has a chance to do an ‘at-home' TV breakfast show, and naturally Lucy wants to be in it. Things go well until Lucy discovers Ricky only let her do the show because the sponsor insisted. Then revenge is what is served for breakfast!  The live show is named “Breakfast with Ricky and Lucy.”
Tumblr media
“Breakfast with Ricky and Lucy” was inspired by "Breakfast with Dorothy and Dick."  This daily radio chat show aired from 1945 through 1963, and starred Dorothy Kilgallen, journalist and reporter, and her husband Richard Kollmar, a Broadway actor and producer. There was another popular husband and wife radio breakfast show called “Hi Jinx” that starred model and actress Jinx Falkenburg and publicist Tex McCrary, which made the leap to television in 1948.
Tumblr media
“Bullfight Dance” (1955)
When Lucy is asked to write an article for Photoplay about what it's like being married to Ricky, she uses it to blackmail him to get to perform in a TV benefit for the Heart Fund.
Tumblr media
The scenes of the benefit television show "Coast-to-Coast" for the Heart Fund, hosted by Ricky and featuring Lucy in the bullfight number of the episode's title, are introduced with an establishing shot of the newly-opened CBS Television City building at 7800 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. Although “I Love Lucy” was one of CBS’s strongest shows, Desilu was already happily ensconced at Ren Mar Studios.
Tumblr media
“Face to Face” (1955)
Lucy and Ricky appear on a TV interview show from their apartment. But his new agent says the apartment is a dump, and urges them to move into ritzier quarters. The agent tells Ricky that he thinks he’s got him “planted on the Sullivan show next month”.  “The Ed Sullivan Show” (aka “Toast of the Town”) was a Sunday night staple on CBS. In addition to hosting performers on the stage of their New York theatre, celebrities would also be in the audience, and get introduced by Sullivan to get camera time. This is what is meant by “planted” on the Sullivan show.
Tumblr media
Ed Warren (Elliott Reid) is a parody of Edward R. Murrow (right), who hosted the interview show “Person to Person” from 1953 to 1959. Just like Murrow, Warren signs off by bidding the audience “Good night, and good luck!”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets Charles Boyer” (1956)
Lucy thinks every man she sees is film star Charles Boyer. When she spots the real Boyer, Ricky convinces him to pretend to be a second rate actor who just happens to look like the star. Boyer mentions “Four Star Playhouse” (1952-56), an anthology series sponsored by Singer and Bristol Myers. The premise of the CBS series was that Boyer, Ida Lupino, David Niven, and Dick Powell would take turns starring in episodes.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Superman” (1957)
Lucy brags that she can get Superman for Little Ricky’s birthday party. When he isn’t available, Lucy dresses up as the man of steel instead.
Tumblr media
As the episode opens, Ricky and Little Ricky are watching “Adventures of Superman” on TV. Superman fans have said that this excerpt was not from the original series, but created for “I Love Lucy” using Reeve’s double. The wires holding Superman up are clearly visible in the shot and it was commonly known that Reeve disliked using wires because of an incident early in the show’s creation.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Chummy with the Neighbors” (1957)
When a misunderstanding about the between Betty (Mary Jane Croft) and Lucy spreads to the boys, Ralph (Frank Nelson) rescinds his offer for Ricky to appear on one of his advertising agency's TV shows, saying “We'll get Cugat!”  For Ricky, this is the ultimate insult. In the early days of television, advertising agencies could dictate whether a show would be aired or not. Such was the case with “I Love Lucy” in 1951. Biou Advertising represented Philip Morris, the show’s sponsor during the first several years.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes To Sun Valley” (1958)
When Ricky, Little Ricky and Fred have to stay home to work on a television show, Lucy reluctantly takes Ethel to Sun Valley.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes To Alaska” (1959)
The Ricardos and Merztes go to Alaska where Ricky and Fred have bought some land and Ricky is doing a TV show. When Red Skelton’s partner fails to appear, Lucy is recruited to perform with him.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Wants a Career” (1959)
“I can’t believe it!  Lucy on television!”
Looking for fulfillment outside the home, Lucy takes a job as a Girl Friday for Paul Douglas on the morning TV show “Early Bird.”
Tumblr media
The first morning news program on television was “Three To Get Ready,” a local show hosted by comedian Ernie Kovacs that aired in Philadelphia from 1950 to 1952. Although it was mostly entertainment-oriented, the program did feature news and weather segments. Its success prompted NBC to look at producing something similar on a national basis and in January 1952 the "Today Show” premiered. CBS (Lucy's network) entered the field in 1954, but was never able to compete in the ratings.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets the Mustache” (1960)
Near the end of the episode, Ernie Kovacs tells Ricky to "take a good look" at Crandall (aka Lucy in disguise).
Tumblr media
“Take a Good Look” was the name of a TV quiz show Kovacs moderated at the time. It involved a panel guessing answers based on short skits.

I've fallen away from desi tv almost entirely over the last few years and my only point of occasional contact is my Instagram explore page, so I was Not Prepared to start seeing clips of what look like AU Gopi, Kokila and Aham in what has turned out to be a weird off-brand reboot of Saath Nibhana Saathiya called Tera Mera Saath. It even airs on the budget Star Plus aka Star Bharat.
This is after I learned, via similar process, that there are reboots of Sasuraal Simar Ka(!), Bade Achhe Lagte Hai, Pavitra Rishta (the first is on air and the other two are in different stages of production). Oh, and they brought Nakuul and Disha together again for BALH!
Ekta ofc led the pack with KZK2 a few years ago. And Gul followed up quickly with the Secret Agent AU!Qubool Hai a year or so ago.
This is the logical next step in an industry that ran out of content roughly in 2006 but that doesn't make it any less exhausting.

Being the Ricardos (2021) Review
Tumblr media
I wanted to see Spider-Man: No Way Home. Then I got COVID. So instead I had to watch Being the Ricardos on Amazon Prime whilst in isolation. No shame on Aaron Sorkin, I just really wanted to see Spider-Man.
Plot: In 1952, Hollywood power couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz face a series of personal and professional crises that threaten their careers, their relationship and their hit TV show.
I like Aaron Sorkin. I like his style of writing, and I like how he takes on more challenging biopic narratives and makes them more approachable and understandable to the casual movie-goer. Whether its the fact he actually managed to make the story behind Facebook interesting or the genius move of sticking Sacha Baron Cohen with an afro in a court-room in The Trial of the Chicago 7, the guy tends to know what he’s doing. So as I was sitting at home in COVID isolation sulking and feeling sad for myself for not being able to go out and see Spider-Man: No Way Home (and yes I won’t get over that!!), I came across Being the Ricardos - the new Aaron Sorkin written and directed film that recently premiered on Amazon Prime. So I thought I might as well give it a bash and watch it, seeing as I have nothing better to do than to stay at home and wait for me to stop being an infectious zombie.
So the film is about the behind the scenes drama of the 50s sitcom show I Love Lucy. For those of you wondering what an old school sitcom is, go check out WandaVision on Disney+ that pays homage to that medium. And yes, I’m gonna give WandaVision a shout out cause that show was amazing and gave Marvel a chance to break free from the formulaic superhero genre, so that should be respected!! Anyway, back to the Ricardos. So the film is about the on-set dispute during the preparation towards filming one of the episodes of I Love Lucy, when it comes to light that the show’s main star Lucille Ball may or may not be a communist, and for those of you who are scratching your heads as to why that was a problem, let’s just say 50s America were really against that political outlook and so being a commie was a big no-no! Especially for a celebrity on a prime network television show! So the film then covers how the studio and crew deal with trying to calm the situation, and as such the movie holds a constant question of will they/won’t they be able to film another episode of I Love Lucy or will they be cancelled and axed immediately due to the drama and controversy. I must say that I didn’t know anything about this true story prior to watching the film, so from that end I was curious to see how the events transpired and to what conclusion.
That being said, the main issue of this film lies in that I tries to capture many small narrative thread lines into one, and as such not giving any of the intertwining stories true justice. So we have the main thread which is the communist controversy, and that should be the main story however it’s only addressed at the beginning of the movie and at the end. Honestly when watching the movie I half forgotten that that was even a thing until its brought back at the end and I was like “oh yes, that’s what the movie was supposed to be about!”. The rest of the film is dedicated to the mystery of has Lucille’s husband and co-star Desi Arnaz cheated on her or not, to then also Lucille’s general career of trying to push herself away from comedy and attempt more serious films and dramas even though 50s Hollywood doesn’t want that from her, to Lucille clashing with the director and writers of their current episode of I Love Lucy and trying to overtake the creative process, to Lucille having abandonment issues from her husband and so trying to persuade the producers of all her filming work to give him pay raises and ensure he’s always cast alongside her so that she doesn’t lose him, and the list goes on. There’s so many little narratives that all on their own can be very interesting, however the movie tries to cram it all into one, and as such we cannot ever get into the meat and grittiness of it all, as such leaving for quite a passive and an unengaging viewing experience. There’s so much going on all at once that I found myself not caring much for any of it, which is a shame, as there is an interesting story in there, it’s just not presented well.
Casting wise everyone seems to be doing a good job. Again, I don’t know anything about the real life personas these actors are playing, so cannot say how true and accurate their portrayals are, but for the movie that I was watching everyone seemed to be doing a good job. Nicole Kidman is unrecognisable behind all the make-up, but she presents Lucille Ball as a strong-willed woman who fights for what she wants yet also being eccentric enough to validate why she’s so beloved as the central comedic piece of I Love Lucy, whilst Javier Bardem gives such a lively, witty and charming turn as Lucille’s husband Desi, and even sings his own songs, and his character reminded me a lot of Hugh Grant’s St Clair Bayfield in Florence Foster Jenkins, where overall the man is so supportive of his wife’s dreams and accomplishments, and in some ways is the driving force to her success, however that is hindered by the fact that he’s also being unfaithful in his marriage. And Bardem does a great job at balancing those traits. Nina Arianda and JK Simmons as Vivian Vance and William Frawley also are worth mentioning as two side actors of I Love Lucy, as they brought a lot of heart and realism to their characters.
Being the Ricardos is an interesting film. There’s a good story in there with solid performances and 50s Hollywood is visually brought to life really well, however it’s also a misfire for someone like Sorkin who usually is able to tell a story in a very concise and direct way, however here it seems his ideas are all over the place and he simply doesn’t know how to put it all together successfully. That being said, for someone who’s disappointed that they aren’t yet able to see the new Spider-Man film, this was a good distraction and a film I did enjoy watching overall, even though it felt like a filmed Wikipedia page.
Overall score: 6/10

Have Some ‘Splaining To Do About Being the Ricardos
By Jay S. Jacobs
The whole world has loved Lucy for decades, but how well do we really know her? This question intrigued famed writer/director Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, The West Wing, The Trial of the Chicago 7), to the point that his latest film is Being the Ricardos, a look behind the scenes at the filming of I Love Lucy in the early 1960s.
Being the Ricardos takes us behind the curtain of the show. We not only see the zany public personas of the actors, but also the driven artists and shrewd businesspeople behind the characters. It is a particularly fraught week for Lucy, who as the first woman in charge of a production company must put out fires amongst her stars and staff, deal with both a public accusation of being a communist and the effect of her pregnancy on the most popular show on TV, as well as suspicions of her husband’s infidelity.
Sorkin put together a star-studded cast for the film, including four-time Oscar winner Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball and three-time Oscar winner Javier Bardem as her hot-blooded Cuban bandleader co-star and husband Desi Arnaz. Playing the supporting cast of I Love Lucy also had Oscar winner JK Simmons as William Frawley and Tony winner Nina Arianda as Vivian Vance. The cast is rounded out by the likes of Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jake Lacy and Clark Gregg.
A week before Being the Ricardos had a limited theatrical release, and a few weeks before its premiere today on Amazon Prime, we were one of the lucky media outlets to take part in a virtual press conference with Kidman, Bardem, Simmons and Arianda. Here are some of the things they had to say.
The cast on the screenplay and direction by Aaron Sorkin:
Nina Arianda: It was it was such a brilliant first read. Then it was even more fun to dissect. The thing that right away jumped off the page for me was just how relentless the stakes are. Everything you could possibly want. It's almost a thriller for me. The stakes never leave you. It's just continuous to the end of the story.
JK Simmons: First I'm wishing I'd done what Nina had done and actually read the script more than once. (laughs) I was so blown away by it the first time. That's a great question, because obviously Hollywood knows Aaron Sorkin, the writer and has known for decades now. This is the third film he's directed, the first film that he wrote intending to be the director because the other two times it came together for different reasons.
Tumblr media
Nicole Kidman: The thing that this film does is it pulls the curtain back. It's not the I Love Lucy show. It's how was that made? Who was this person that was capable of that genius? What was her story? What was her life? As JK said, aren't you glad it's not from birth to death? It's not that kind of storytelling. It's Aaron Sorkin storytelling where he compresses a number of things into a week and then – flashing forward and back – is able to show you the essence of who this woman was and who these people were. That was what was so unusual about it. It wasn't a biopic.
Javier Bardem: That’s the exquisite complexity of the script, that he really goes to places without abandoning anyone. It really reunites lots of aspects of them – as a marriage, as a couple, as artists, as colleagues. Everything is so well put together. That makes it more exciting to perform it, but also to watch it as an audience. It's very full of different details that is going to give you a good idea of who they were and what they were doing back in the day.
JK Simmons: [Sorkin has] gotten to a point now in his career as both writer and producer [where he] knows every aspect of filmmaking so thoroughly that it was a very collaborative process with everyone, all of us in front of the camera as well as behind the camera. He also had supreme confidence in himself – and from those of us working with him – as a guy who knows every aspect of what the story is and how to tell it.
Nicole Kidman: When I was sent [the script] originally online, I couldn't put it down. I read it and this screenplay is extraordinary. I would ask anyone to read the screenplays because it's such a good read.
The cast on playing such iconic real-life characters:
Nicole Kidman: She had Desilu, the production [company], and no actors had that at that time. She was the first of her kind. She's one of a kind.
Nina Arianda: For me, it was really important to honor the physical differences between the two women because they were so extreme. Vivian was a wonderful dancer. She was a leading lady. She was an ingenue. And Ethel was Ethel. I had all the all the research I can possibly want for Ethel obviously, but for Vivian it was a little tougher.
Tumblr media
JK Simmons: As Nina said, we all had plenty of footage of I Love Lucy to watch. For those few moments when we were expected to mimic aspects of the show itself… of the play within the play... that was very clear. About Bill Frawley there was much less… well zero… video that I could find outside of his films and his appearances on I Love Lucy. No talk shows, no anything on video, not even a book. Desi famously wrote a book called A Book. There were plenty of books about Lucille Ball and even about Vivian Vance. Much less about Bill Frawley.
Nicole Kidman: Initially when I said yes to it, I did not realize what I was saying yes to. I was saying yes to Aaron Sorkin script and a great opportunity. I was like, “Wow.” It was in a pandemic. This is an extraordinary thing to sit on a zoom with Aaron Sorkin and him to say, “I want you to play Lucille Ball.” Having read the screenplay, it's magnificent. Then maybe a week later, it hit me. I was trying to work on just the little baby steps into her voice. It was nowhere within reach. I was like, “Oh, no, what have I done? I wish I had the talent to do this, but I don't.” Then it was like, “Help!”
JK Simmons: All of my research was through the perspective of Vivian and Lucille and Desi and Jess Oppenheimer in some audio interviews. In a way, I found that to be freeing in terms of how I portrayed off camera Bill, which again is 98% of the movie. He was honestly not all that dissimilar from the cranky landlord, Fred Mertz.
Javier Bardem: [I was most impressed by] his absolute confidence in himself. How supportive he was of his wife and the whole show. How to overcome the obstacles by a strong sense of humor. He was making fun of everything. That doesn't mean that he didn't take it seriously, but he didn't get stuck in the drama of it all.
Nina Arianda: A producer and sent me a clip that was a couple of seconds long and it was simply Desi introducing Vivian Vance to the to the audience right before they were taping. It was really eye opening for me because out came this woman with a long spine, her shoulders back and she sashayed to downstage and took a graceful bow and left. I just saw a completely different woman. I became so obsessed with her background. How did this spine develop? So I guess for me, it was really trying to be as respectful as I could to these two very different bodies.
Nicole Kidman: Luckily, I had a couple of months, so I could work on it slowly, meticulously, methodically. Watching the show, listening to the voice, doing all of the preparation. Which is very unusual for me because a lot of times I'll start really inside. But the inside of it was almost already there, just because I could relate to her, I could feel her. It was so beautifully written. Then it was like, “Oh, no, how do I actually create Lucille Ball?” But Aaron was fantastic. Because when I freaked out – which I did – he's not as good on the phone. He's like, “Yeah.” He wants to get off the phone. He's not a big talker like that. But he sent an email that was just basically, “You've got this. You're just going to have to take it day by day. I don't want an impersonation. I want you to do the work that you can do, that I know you will do. And I want you not to freak out, basically, because I believe you can do it.”
JK Simmons: The gift that we all got from Aaron Sorkin in this script and in his direction along the way, there were so many beautifully detailed layers for all of us. We got to see multiple aspects of all of these characters as they relate to each other at different times – as seen in the bar that I have [a drink] with Lucille, [or] the scene after the table read that I have with Desi, [or] the kvetching back and forth that Vivian and Bill have. All of it was not easy, but it was clear how to lift that off of the page.
Nicole Kidman: I would challenge him on that at different points throughout the thing. (laughs) He would never waver. [He] was so consistent in his belief. I'd be like begging for some sort of nose or chin. At one point, I was like, “I got to change my jaw, the jaw is different.” He said, “I don't care.” I mean, it was frustrating for him I think, because he saw how he wanted it and it took me time to give over to that. When I did, I went okay. But in the process, I was able to work on the actual Lucy part of it, which I could hang my hat on that and go, “Well, I'm going to have the hair and I'm going to have the lips and I'm going to have all [that.] I can do all of this. Even though it's a sliver of the movie, I'll have that.” Then out of Lucy Ricardo came Lucille Ball. Lucille Ball is very different to Lucy Ricardo. Lucille Ball created Lucy Ricardo.

Movie Review: Being the Ricardos
Let’s talk for a minute about I Love Lucy (CBS 1951-1957), one of the all-time great TV comedies. I watched it in reruns as a little kid, decades after it first aired in primetime and it was LOL funny, mainly because of the physical comedy of star Lucille Ball. Whenever you see a list of the funniest TV shows of all-time, I Love Lucy usually clocks in within the Top 3. In Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie Licorice Pizza (expect my review soon), there is a scene set in 1973 where there’s a show with “Lucille Doolittle”, but its basically Lucille Ball as played by Christine Ebersole. Amy Poehler is currently making a documentary about Ball. Its like her comedy is timeless and in 2021 we haven’t come close to forgetting her. Now Aaron Sorkin has a biopic about Ball played by Nicole Kidman and husband co-star Desi Arnez Jr. played by Javiar Bardem in Being the Ricardos, which just opened in theaters and hits Amazon Prime Video on Dec. 21.

The film begins with the series being one of the highest-rated TV shows in the country and during the Red Scare in 1953, Ball is accused of being a member of the Communist Party. During the tense week that follows, Ball and Arnez Jr. prepare that week’s episode, which is sink or swim for their career. Throughout that week, there are flashbacks to the two meeting for the first time, their marriage and more.

Kidman and Bardem as Ball and Arnez Jr.
This movie was uneven to say the least. Sorkin’s style of rapid fire dialogue and using characters as talking points can work in some movies, i.e. The Social Network (which he won an Oscar for writing), in which he used the legal deposition as the framework for the creation of Facebook. It also worked in last year’s courtroom drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 (I named it my - ahem - #7 Movie of 2020). Here it felt like he was trying to pack so much in, to the point where the characters were just talking points and nothing more. Before this movie even premiered there was a backlash about the casting and how Nicole Kidman is not the comic genius that Ball deserves to play her. I actually thought Kidman rose to the challenge and gave a great performance. It’s not the kind of movie that’s about what made her funny so much as the dramatic elements of that week and Kidman delivered. But there’s a kitchen sink feeling to this one week: marital drama, behind-the-scenes shots-calling, and bringing Ball’s pregnancy to television. It even missed the mark as a look at how TV shows were made in the 50s, we only get moments of the writer’s room and then its onto the next thing. With this writer-director, this cast, and this subject, I had hoped it would’ve been better.

VACATION TIME
April 29, 1949
Tumblr media
“Vacation Time” (aka “Trailer Vacation to Goosegrease Lake”) is episode #41 of the radio series MY FAVORITE HUSBAND broadcast on April 29, 1949 on the CBS radio network.
Synopsis ~ It's vacation time, and Liz and George have decidedly different plans. He wants to go camping with a trailer he borrowed from a friend, while she's set on a glamorous vacation at Moosehead Lodge.
Tumblr media
This episode later partly inspired the premise of “Liz Learns To Swim” aired on June 11, 1950.
Tumblr media
“My Favorite Husband” was based on the novels Mr. and Mrs. Cugat, the Record of a Happy Marriage (1940) and Outside Eden (1945) by Isabel Scott Rorick, which had previously been adapted into the film Are Husbands Necessary? (1942). “My Favorite Husband” was first broadcast as a one-time special on July 5, 1948. Lucille Ball and Lee Bowman played the characters of Liz and George Cugat, and a positive response to this broadcast convinced CBS to launch “My Favorite Husband” as a series. Bowman was not available Richard Denning was cast as George. On January 7, 1949, confusion with bandleader Xavier Cugat prompted a name change to Cooper. On this same episode Jell-O became its sponsor. A total of 124 episodes of the program aired from July 23, 1948 through March 31, 1951. After about ten episodes had been written, writers Fox and Davenport departed and three new writers took over – Bob Carroll, Jr., Madelyn Pugh, and head writer/producer Jess Oppenheimer. In March 1949 Gale Gordon took over the existing role of George’s boss, Rudolph Atterbury, and Bea Benaderet was added as his wife, Iris. CBS brought “My Favorite Husband” to television in 1953, starring Joan Caulfield and Barry Nelson as Liz and George Cooper. The television version ran two-and-a-half seasons, from September 1953 through December 1955, running concurrently with “I Love Lucy.” It was produced live at CBS Television City for most of its run, until switching to film for a truncated third season filmed (ironically) at Desilu and recasting Liz Cooper with Vanessa Brown.
MAIN CAST
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Liz Cooper) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.
Richard Denning (George Cooper) was born Louis Albert Heindrich Denninger Jr., in Poughkeepsie, New York. When he was 18 months old, his family moved to Los Angeles. Plans called for him to take over his father’s garment manufacturing business, but he developed an interest in acting. Denning enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He is best known for his  roles in various science fiction and horror films of the 1950s. Although he teamed with Lucille Ball on radio in “My Favorite Husband,” the two never acted together on screen. While “I Love Lucy” was on the air, he was seen on another CBS TV series, “Mr. & Mrs. North.” From 1968 to 1980 he played the Governor on “Hawaii 5-0″, his final role. He died in 1998 at age 84.
Bea Benadaret (Iris Atterbury) and Gale Gordon (Rudolph Atterbury) do not appear in this episode.
Ruth Perrott (Katie, the Maid) was also later seen on “I Love Lucy.” She first played Mrs. Pomerantz (above right), a member of the surprise investigating committee for the Society Matrons League in “Pioneer Women” (ILL S1;E25), as one of the member of the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League in “Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress” (ILL S3;E3), and also played a nurse when “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16). She died in 1996 at the age of 96.
Bob LeMond (Announcer) also served as the announcer for the pilot episode of “I Love Lucy”. When the long-lost pilot was finally discovered in 1990, a few moments of the opening narration were damaged and lost, so LeMond – fifty years later – recreated the narration for the CBS special and subsequent DVD release.
GUEST CAST
Tumblr media
Frank Nelson (Policeman) was born on May 6, 1911 (three months before Lucille Ball) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He started working as a radio announcer at the age of 15. He later appeared on such popular radio shows as “The Great Gildersleeve,” “Burns and Allen,” and “Fibber McGee & Molly”. This is one of his 11 performances on “My Favorite Husband.”  On “I Love Lucy” he holds the distinction of being the only actor to play two recurring roles: Freddie Fillmore and Ralph Ramsey, as well as six one-off characters, including the frazzled train conductor in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5), a character he repeated on “The Lucy Show.”  Aside from Lucille Ball, Nelson is perhaps most associated with Jack Benny and was a fifteen-year regular on his radio and television programs.
Tumblr media
Wally Maher (Joe Risley) was born on August 4, 1908 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was known for Mystery Street (1950), The Reformer and the Redhead (1950) and Hollywood Hotel (1937). He was heard with Lucille Ball in the Lux Radio Theatre version of “The Dark Corner” (1947), taking the role originated on film by William Bendix. He died on December 27, 1951.
Tumblr media
Milton Stark (Filling Station Attendant) was a theatre actor and director, who also appeared on radio and television, although usually in supporting roles.  He also worked as a dialogue coach and acting teacher. At UCLA a scholarship was established in his name. He lived to the age of 103.
EPISODE
ANNOUNCER: “As we look in on the Coopers, it is a cold rainy afternoon, but Liz is in her bedroom standing in front of the mirror wearing a back-less, strapless sun dress.”
Liz calls Katie in to show off her sun dress, but Katie is disapproving that is so revealing.  Liz has shopped for summer vacation clothes.  Liz’s bathing suit cost’s forty dollars.
KATIE: “That’s a lot of money for two doilies and a diaper.”
Liz says that husbands only approve of scanty swimsuits when they are on any woman but their wives.
LIZ: “I want to look good for George. He’s going to see a lot of me this summer.” KATIE: “He’s not the only one!”
Tumblr media
The topic of revealing bathing suits was later also mined for comedy on I Love Lucy.”  In “Off To Florida” (ILL S6;E6) Ricky thinks Lucy’s new skimpy new swimsuit is for Little Ricky!  Lucy also buys a swimsuit that Ricky feels is too skimpy when shopping for their California trip in “Getting Ready” (ILL S4;E11)
Liz says they are going to Moosehead Lodge on Lake Okeechobee. Liz calls it a real swanky place.  Katie reminds Liz that George prefers more rugged vacations.  Liz says she will suggest it to George at dinner.
Tumblr media
Lake Okeechobee is a real place, located in central Florida, although it is far more conducive to George’s type of vacation than Liz’s, highlighting nature through fishing and nature.
Tumblr media
Although there are places called Moosehead Lodge in America, it unlikely that a moose would be associated with central Florida and that it would be an upscale resort of the type Liz is describing.
At the bank, George talks to his co-worker Joe about scheduling vacations.  Joe says that his ideal vacation is in a trailer.  If George likes the idea, he will lend the Coopers his trailer.  George will suggest it to Liz at dinner.
After dinner, both Liz and George get cozy with the idea of easing the other into going on their dream destination.  Liz ‘just happened’ to hear about a place that she vaguely remembers.
LIZ: “I did hear of some place called Moosehead Lodge. It’s probably situated in groves of stately pines, on the shores of an emerald green lake, its rustic beauty enhanced by lawns and flower beds. Each luxurious room is furnished with clean, comfortable box spring beds, modern bathroom and shower. Ten dollars a day, American plan. Oh, George, let’s go there. We can relax and enjoy a continual round of  glorious entertainment, sports, good food, and true fellowship, see your travel agent for details.”
George realizes that Liz has been plotting a vacation.  George says he has a better idea - two weeks in a trailer.  Liz is less than keen. George says that they can borrow Joe Risley’s trailer!
LIZ: “Keen with mud on it.”
Liz is worried that nobody will see her new vacation wardrobe if they are cooped up in a trailer.  They are at an impasse.  Liz suggests they go on separate vacations.  When George reluctantly agrees, she breaks down in tears.
Liz moans to Katie that she already misses George, and the vacation doesn’t begin for two months.  George phones from work to talk to Liz.  George offers a compromise.  They will take a trial weekend trip in the trailer, and if she doesn’t like it, he will go to Moosehead Lodge!
Tumblr media
Vacationing in a trailer was explored by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in their 1953 comedy MGM’s The Long Long Trailer.  The film mines a lot of physical comedy from the trailer’s unwieldy movement and how Lucy’s character Tacy Bolton copes with it.
ANNOUNCER: “George is just driving up with the trailer hooked up to the back of the car.”
Liz remarks how small the trailer is.
GEORGE: “Keep an open mind.” LIZ: “I’ll have to close it or it won’t fit in that trailer.”
They tour the inside, which is smaller than Liz thought.  Just then, a knock at the trailer door and there’s a policeman (Frank Nelson) issuing them a parking ticket! Forty bucks for parking illegally!
The next morning George and Liz get an early start on their trial trailer trip.  Liz has brought along a little light reading for the trip: “Inside Moosehead Lodge” by Liz Gunther.
Motoring along the highway, George is enjoying the drive.
LIZ: “Travel is great. I wouldn’t go anywhere without it.”
George says it is so smooth, you wouldn’t even know the trailer is back there.  Liz notices that it isn’t!  George forgot to hook it on!   Finally, they are off (again) to Goosegrease Lake. Liz reads one of those sequential signs along the roadside: “If Your Whiskers...  Won’t Behave... Take a Tip Use....”  Liz goes silent.
GEORGE: “Use what?”  LIZ: “The last sign’s torn down. Now we’ll never know.”
Tumblr media
Almost everyone in the audience knew it was Burma-Shave.  From 1926 until 1963 the ‘brushless’ shaving cream company dotted the American highways with small red signs, each containing a line of a short rhyme that the driver could read without slowing down as they drove by.  At one time, there were over 600 different rhymes on signs!
Tumblr media
The idea was given a nod on a 1955 “I Love Lucy” episode “First Stop” (ILL S4;E14) with the roadside signs for Aunt Polly’s Pecan Pralines.
LUCY: Fifty miles to Aunt Sally’s Pecan Pralines. later... LUCY: 300 yards to Aunt Sally’s! ETHEL: 200 yards! FRED: 100 yards! RICKY: Just around the bend! LUCY: You have just passed Aunt Sally’s.
Liz is quite sure that George’s shortcut has gotten them lost. They stop to ask directions from a laid back filling station attendant (Milton Stark) who tells them they don’t want to go to Goosegrease Lake.  He suggests they go to the hot springs, instead.
Oops! Milton Stark has trouble pronouncing ‘Goosegrease’ and  the audience is aware of his flub. When he asks Lucille Ball “What ya gonna do there?” She deliberately says “We’re gonna goose a grease”, instead of “grease a goose”, which causes more giggles from the cast and gales of laughter from the audience.
FILLING STATION ATTENDANT: “You can’t get there from here!”
Tumblr media
Next morning Liz wakes up and looks around.  She sees beautiful green grass and a little flag with the number 18 on it!  A golf ball comes crashing through the window. The policeman from who ticketed them earlier knocks on the trailer door. They have illegally camped out on the 18th green of the municipal golf course - only two miles from home!  Liz said they didn’t know where they were going.
POLICEMAN: “Do you know where you’re going now?” LIZ: “Yes!  To Moosehead Lodge!” POLICEMAN: “No, to the city jail! Come on!”
End of Episode

HELLLLLLO GORGEOUS!!! As we said yesterday, these boys are our heroes 😍😍😍
Btw a question.... a friend of my mom told me I'm being childish because I like kpop at the average age of..... *drum roll* 28. WHY?? I MEAN, IT'S MUSIC. I can like whatever I want or I'm wrong? Okay a lot of idols are younger than me but I don't sexualixe them (yeah, hard hours but with limits) and I try my best not to overcome boundaries with idols/fans themselves. I'm just a older bean who happens to like kpop 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 if I'm creepy just tell me c.c
-🦋anon
Top of the day, sweets!!
Okay, let me just lay this out real quick: k-pop is a music genre. Nothing more, nothing less. It's easy to get that mixed up, with the fanservice and the fansigns and the whole extra shebang of kpop idol culture, but it's nothing different from the fanservice any western artist would do, if that's the parallel you want to draw. I don't see people having a problem with older people stanning Ariana Grande? Or hell, I don't see anybody having a problem with people having a sports team fixation? How is this any different?
Another thing i feel needs to be said: fanfiction/idol! fiction is never about the idol themselves. If anything, they are a place marker for a character of our own, just with a recognisable name. That distinction is once again, easy to blur, but (I feel, atleadt) it is a base rule of any fanfiction/idol! Fiction community, including Stayblr.
We as fans, as media consumers, as apart of a community as wide and diverse as kpop learn fast(through trial -and - error, some times) the boundaries that need to be kept. And if you, my dearest 🦋 anon, have those boundaries clear, I don't see why you shouldn't stan kpop artists even if you're 50 years old.
I've gotten them judgy questions from my mom's friends too and I have a standard response for them (I'm desi, and this is a stereotype that has unfailingly been a perfect response): "Auntie, you stop watching your mother-in-law/ daughter-in-law tv serials for a year and show me, I'll think about leaving kpop." :)
So you're good, ma'am. 🥰❤️

ATTENTION DO NOT LET THE FIRST CHAPTER DISCOURAGE YOU THE WRITING GETS SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER AFTER IT.
The aftermath of codex left Mac feeling alone, confused and depressed, even though he had his team he did not really converse with them outside of work. The only person he really talked to lived in Australia, but what happens when Matty fearing for Macs mental stability she rehires an old employee hoping that she would be able to get through to Mac. Follow the team as they face trials and tribulations. Mac feels more alone than ever before. Bozer and Leanna are trying to rebuild their relationship. Cage is trying to fix her broken friend. Desi and Riley realize maybe they did not like Mac but were jealous of him. Matty is worried about the state of her team and their mental health. Russ is trying to figure out the pattern and where he fits into all this. Jack has been gone for over two years without much contact with the team. And everyone has been keeping secrets. This is my take on what should have happened three months after codex and seven months before season 5 contains Spoilers for season 4. Please no hate, on my ships or opinions

Choodi jo khanki, haathon mein Yaad piya ki aane lagi Haaye bheegi bheegi raaton mein
-Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi (1998), Falguni Pathak
Ok look, I’m a slut for the young love angle in music videos– stories of unrequited crushes, coy glances, misplaced affection for the Wrong People, cutesy gestures and extremely PG-13 hugging/hand-holding. And this was Falguni’s whole shtick. Most of her videos narrate cloyingly sweet tales of cishet young love (sometimes in rather bizarre ways). And Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi is arguably her most popular offering in this genre.
A very young Riya Sen has acquired tickets to a garba night and her friends are dying of excitement. Amid goofing around, they manage to go shopping, practice a hook step, get dressed and set off for the event. At the venue, tragedy strikes! Riya is the last to leave the car and gets her dupatta stuck in the now-locked door. Her friends have moved on without realising what’s wrong. It’s at times like this that I feel truly grateful for the invention of the cell phone. We take solutions to a variety of simple problems for granted because of them. So, we have Riya fruitlessly trying to pull her dupatta out of the door and it starts to rip. And then, help appears in the form of a young and dashing Kiran Janjani! The same dude she’d been eyeing from the store she’d gone shopping in! What a coincidence! He pulls a bobby pin out of her hair, unlocks the door and saves her dupatta. I’m thinking carjacking must have been at an all-time high in that era. Riya is thrilled and joins her friends at the party, even being invited to dance on stage with Falguni (who always appeared in her videos).
I think Yaad Piya Ki works so well because it manages to capture a specific Anticipation of being on the cusp of a very femme womanhood. The video isn’t really about Riya and Kiran. It’s about Riya and her schoolgirl friends reveling in the excitement of a grownup-night-out. The camera lingers on the rituals of grooming, dancing, crafting a Look with limited resources (that iconic blue lehenga!), all in exaggerated motions. Riya encountering a cute, older (possibly college-going?) guy and crushing on him is a part of the same heady, hormonal mix of feelings. Whether she sees him again, whether she ends up with him…answers to these questions would be anticlimactic. It’s all about the pleasure of looking forward to something, of a night ripe with possibilities, of adolescent longing that’s difficult to articulate.
