This is my (kinda new 😂) Walkman… And yes: this time I can really call it Walkman, cause this one actually is a Sony!

It‘s a WM 32 from somewhen 1986 and 89, so it‘s the most basic model by Sony, like no Radio, no Auto-Reverse or any other funny extras. But — that‘s still great: cause everything it doesn’t have…. can‘t break, and come on — it just looks great.

It also came with a belt-clip so I can actually wear it as part of my outfit, I’m literally so excited 🤣😁😁

So here’s the thing. If you were an English (including colonial) upper class 18th century man you were expected to care about your appearance but you couldn’t care about it too much or in the wrong ways. You always must dress in a way suited to the dignity of your station. But if you cared too much about fashion were too concerned about your appearance you were crossing into the world of female frivolity. And of course there was specific fashion trends that had particular feminine connotations.

You had to be careful what you wore lest you unsex yourself. Your manhood could be called into question if your suit was the wrong cut or the wrong colour, you shouldn’t wear shoe strings but also don’t wear buckles that are too showy. Your hat must be black not white and it shouldn’t be round. Your hair must be powdered but don’t spend too long on it what are you a vain woman. Don’t carry un umbrella those are for convenience of the fair sex only. And only wear a dress sword in the appropriate context.

#yes wearing a sword in the wrong context was considered effeminate #this is mostly based on 1770-80 trends but you get the point
