The Tokyo Revengers ending! Some thoughts now that I've read it.
this is so messy... I’m sorry.
A love letter to the fans
And, don't you think that's what it is? The last chapter constantly thanks us and Takemichi for having read, enjoyed and followed the work to this day.
Does everyone remember?
The supernatural element hasn't disappeared (and that's a good thing because it's the coherence of the plot)!
Naoto, who was a policeman (and became a policeman to save his sister in the future), is now an occult journalist, since he no longer needs to save his sister from death and may have vague memories of what happened with Takemichi. , just like Chifuyu.
And speaking of Chifuyu...
Chifuyu
At first, he was not convinced that the narrator of the last chapter was precisely Chifuyu. I loved he, but it wasn't his story, nor was it the end of his journey. However, when I reread it (I won't get tired of saying that TokRev is to reread forever) i convinced me more. On one hand, I think Wakui wanted to express his feelings about the end of TokRev (in addition to thanking the fans for their support). And, on the other, to narrate again what it means to be a hero. As Takemichi is no longer our crybaby hero, but just our hero. The hero who sacrificed so much to save them all. And true heroes don't tell their own story. Chifuyu, who represents fidelity personified -at least, to a certain extent- is perfect for doing so.
And speaking of Takemichi...
Takemichi
I've seen some people complain that they wanted to see the Takemichi of the past, with his eyes "lit up" (which he has, by the way!) And, above all, crying his eyes out at the wedding. But I think this would be a mistake, even if the ending was different! Takemichi has given all the tears he could to his companions, out of love for them. But now he doesn't need to cry anymore BECAUSE HE HAS DONE IT! He has achieved his goal. No one has died and everyone goes their own ways despite everything. He no longer needs to drop another tear, just smile, just as he does: with satisfaction and peace.
On the other hand, is it complete happiness?
Yes and no. Happiness, in this case, means having the opportunity to follow your own path, despite everything (as Chifuyu explains in a paragraph). Which is to say that many of the things we saw didn't change overnight (obviously for me!) and just happened:
Draken was abandoned by his mother and lived for years in a brothel, but the love of his life did not die tragically at the age of fifteen, they have managed to be together and it seems that they are going to start a family.
The history of the Shiba family and that of the ToMan against the Black Dragons did happen more or less as such.
South survived the violence of his childhood (I think with him I have the least doubt that this guy fought his own gang against the ToMan, before he joined her) and is now a professional wrestler.
And he chases the one who was his killer in another life! LOL. It might be a bit weird, but in this ending you have to use your imagination (which isn't a bad thing, the writing is half imagination, half description), so I imagine South, after his battle with the ToMan, was equally defeated by Mikey (as in the past, with the difference that he did not kill him) and now admires him for being the person who managed to defeat him. The truth would not be strange to me...
Sanzu and Senju STILL HAVE A SHITTING BROTHER.
Takeomi is still the same as always and takes advantage of his brothers, as Chifuyu tells us. But these, although they seem quite apart from Takeomi, who calls himself his manager, they also don't seem to have many problems giving him money. As Chifuyu explains, this is THEIR decision and, although it seems bad to us (I include myself at this point), Senju and Sanzu are adults to make their decisions... I guess.
Izana had the life she did (look at her eyes!), but she met the Sanos and the ToMan and now she travels the world helping kids like him along with Kakucho (who also had a bad life) and the rest of Tenjiku.
And now I want to make a little emphasis on the latter...
Wakui's true goal (or so I think, haha)
Wakui has explained many times that in his youth (and as most of his manga shows, haha) he was part of a bosozoku gang. Initially, these types of gangs were born to fight against war and other injustices, before - as Wakui explained in his day - the gangs became small mafias that terrorize the neighborhoods of Japan. And that is the goal of Tokyo Revengers (according to the author)!, to revive those ideals. That's why we have the protagonist that we have (who learns from them along the way), that's why several of the characters have managed to survive their injustices (like Izana, Sur, etc.), that's why, in the end, some of the characters ( such as the group of Tenjiku or Kisaki and Koko) work and/or help in charitable associations. Because that's the meaning Wakui knew (and wanted to convey) of gangs! Mutual support, lasting friendship (despite following different paths) and the fight against injustice.
So did I like the ending?
Yes, and also, now I think that it is the ending that Wakui wanted to give it (see what a clever little person posted on Twitter) and that makes me twice as happy.
Tokyo Revengers has become one of my favorite manga. I can't wait to have the complete collection! (I think it's been years since I wanted to make a collection like this one). There's something special about this work, and it certainly won't stop being special to me overnight (probably never). And I hope I can keep talking about her here on Tumblr! Because what Wakui has achieved with that ending is that TokRev never ends.

I hate how TR ending is that you can only be happy if bad things didn’t happend to you. Because if they did there is no way to repair and heal, you just need to undo all bad things, that’s it.
I loved the series and wanted characters to be happy but it’s just a lazy writing.

Umpteenth timeline analysis
Attempt to fill the void between chapters 277 and 278 with some headcanon.
1998 - 1999
Mikey and Takemichi time leaped in this year. They are respectively 8 and 7 years old (inside: 17/18 and 27) and attend 2nd and 1st year of elementary school.
(It’s true that Takemichi has a mental age of 27, but this mental age freeze when he time leap. He doesn’t turn 40 even though he lived 19 years in the past. Takemichi is quite childish to begin with. Takemichi situation is not different from a reincarnation)
Takemichi and Mikey agree to save everyone to create a better future.
Takemichi becomes Mikey’s childhood friends —> he become close to Baji, Sanzu and Senju.
The plane incident didn’t happen —> Sanzu and Senju don’t develop a strain relationship, they even become quite close —> if Senju behave well, Takeomi has no reason to scold Sanzu
1999 - 2003
Takemichi is 2nd year elementary schooler.
Kakucho changed school because his family has to move (?) —> Takemichi can’t prevent the car incident (maybe he didn’t even know what happen to Kakucho parents to begin with) *The car incident happen when Kakucho was 3rd year elementary school (= a year after)
Mikey met Draken, probably the same way they meet in previous timeline.
Baji befriend Kazutora, in the meanwhile Mikey met Pah-chin.
All founding members of Toman met + Takemichi. They decide to create a gang.
The fire at Inui house
Since Inupi has not the scar anymore, it’s logic to presume the fire didn’t happen (maybe Inupi told Takemichi about how he get the scar).
Option 1: prevent the cause of the fire (quite impossible)
Option 2: prevent Inui siblings to be at home the day of the fire (more plausible)
The fire happen when Akane was an high schooler (age between 16 and 18). Since Akane is 5 years older than Inupi, he and Koko age were between 11 and 13. But since they didn’t wear an uniform, they were elementary schooler when the fire happen making them 11 or 12. So the year is presumably 2000 or 2001.
Supposing Takemichi and Mikey succeeded to prevent Inupi and Akane to be home, it didn’t change the fact that the house burn and Inui family have money problem.
To impress Akane, Koko began to study to make money, but in a more relaxed way (money didn’t become an obsession). In the meanwhile, Inupi was bored because Koko spent all his time to study. Then, he discovers Shinichiro shop, he enjoy to listen to Black Dragon stories and came to admire them.
Inupi became a delinquent under Izana. Koko start to worry about him. In the meantime, his feelings for Akane start to fade and he realise that it was only a crush (maybe because she is the female version of Inupi).
After getting released from juvie, Inupi involved Taiju to restore Black Dragons.
Izana situation
Shinichiro couldn’t find a good opportunity to introduce Izana to Mikey and kept postponing.
Izana still went to juvie and met S-62 generation, befriending them. After being released, he take over Black Dragons hoping to impress Shinichiro (?), but then retired and left his role to Shion.
Izana still discovers his true origins and fight with Shinichiro.
Since Shinichiro didn’t die, Izana was not depressed. Instead, he recruit the S-62 generation to create Tenjiku, with the purpose of creating a gang that surpassed Black Dragons and Toman.
Hina and Kisaki
How did Hina fall for Takemichi again?
Since Takemichi wanted to save Kisaki, too, I don’t think they met the same way.
Supposing the same situation happened (Hina trying to save the cat from some older guys), I think that Takemichi arrived bringing Kisaki, who was hiding, with him. They still lose the fight (Takemichi still have the body of a child) but he incite Kisaki to be less coward.
Hina start to have feelings for Takemichi mixed with a sense of deja vu (?). Kisaki start stalking Takemichi, but instead of be jealous of him, he start to admire him and his group of friends.
Kisaki is introduced to Toman’s founders.
2004 - 2006
Toman expanded. Chifuyu, Hakkai, Senju, etc. joined the gang.
Takemichi is a middle schooler and he met Akkun and his original group of friends.
Toman got bigger by including minor gang they defeat. Hanma joined because his gang lose to Toman (?). Maybe Kisaki convince him to betray his gang and so they became friends.
Since Toman has become bigger, the division system was introduced (?). I like to think that Takemichi became acting captain after some achievement (maybe he was a staff member like Kisaki at the beginning).
Valhalla didn’t happen, since Kisaki is a good guy. But there could have been a situation in which Takemichi and Chifuyu need to collaborate. Just because Takemichi and Mikey time leaped together and share the same mission, that doesn’t mean there are no disagreements between them.
Maybe it’s in this occasion that Chifuyu began to have deja vu and remembers the past timeline.
By the way, Chifuyu still met Baji the same way and instead of helping him with a letter for Kazutora, he helped him with homework.
Also, Kazutora and Takemichi attended the same middle school, right? They could have become closer.
How did Toman absorb Black Dragons and Tenjiku?
According to me, it would be interesting to have a “Three Deities” situation with Toman, Black Dragons and Tenjiku as the main three gangs.
It makes sense, because we see Mikey announce to former Black Dragons and Tenjiku that they are members of Toman in the same moment.
So, during this “Three Deities Battle”, Hakkai (helped by Mitsuya and Takemichi?) confront Taiju and maybe Yuzuha arrived, too (similar situation of Christmas arc, with the difference it’s not Christmas, they are not in a church and Taiju didn’t only have Inupi and Koko by his side).
On the other side, Mikey confronts Izana. Probably, before getting to Izana, Toman has to fight the S-62 generation. Then, when Mikey gets to Izana, Shinichiro arrived and welcome him into the family.
At the end of the battle, all conflicts are resolved and the two gangs merged into Toman. I don’t know what role Takemichi had and how he could (theoretically) be in both Black Dragon and Tenjiku conflict, but his achievements earned him the role of acting captain.
South
South moved to Japan more or less in this period. He probably heard about Toman being the strongest gang and declare war at them.
Since dark impulse from Mikey are gone, South is probably not influenced by them (it’s the curse that aggravate others kind of impulse, like violence).
In the end, South and Mikey develop a sort of friendly rival relationship. South didn’t join Toman, but still gave up gangs to become a martial artist abroad.
Disbandment
South is not the final opponent. Probably the final opponent are the 1st generation Black Dragons. This could explain Takeomi, Waka and Benkei involvement.
For Toman to become the best, they have to surpass the legends. It’s difficult to imagine Shinichiro and Mikey fight, but Sanzu vs. Takeomi is not impossible. And Senju vs. Waka and/or Benkei would be interesting. Since she trains at their gym, it would be a fight between teachers and student.
After defeating 1st generation Black Dragons, Toman conquer the country achieving Mikey’s original dream.
Afterwards (everyone relationship and job)
After Toman disbandment, some characters went to high school (high school is not mandatory in Japan) while others start to look for a job.
Takemichi: he went to high school with his middle schools friends, Chifuyu and Hakkai. Probably he and Chifuyu are still close (not sure if Takemichi know that Chifuyu remembers deja vu). I like to think that Takemichi didn’t start going out with Hina until after Toman disbandment. Takemichi has a mission to save everyone, he can’t redo the past anymore, so he prefers to stay friends with her.
Hina: she didn’t give up her feelings for Takemichi. Maybe she keeps contact with Kisaki and Kisaki encourage her to pursue her feelings.
Naoto: Hina talk about Takemichi a lot to him and at the first opportunity she introduced Takemichi to him. Maybe like Chifuyu, Naoto has some deja vu and that pushed him to study occult.
Mikey and Draken: they are still close and work together with bikes. Thus, Mikey became a racer and Draken his mechanic.
Mitsuya: obviously, he became a fashion designer.
Hakkai: he attended one of Mitsuya contest and was scouted to be a model. He began to get more works, but since he can’t manage his schedule, Yuzuha became his manager.
Taiju: like in Manila timeline, he has his chain of restaurants.
Pah-chin and Peh-yan: have the same job as in Bonten timeline.
Baji: his dream is to have a pet shop, but studying is not his forte.
Kazutora: probably didn’t continue his studying.
Chifuyu: he realize that becoming a pilot is difficult and expensive. He help Baji with studying and start to like to work with animals.
Kisaki: he is smart and attended a private school. For him was easy to become rich, but when it comes to deal with money, Koko is better than him.
Koko: making money is his talent. He doesn’t have a toxic obsession with money, but since he study economy since he was young (only my speculation), being good in making money is natural for him.
Shinichiro and Inupi: work at a bike shop.
Waka and Benkei: still have they gym
Akashi siblings: for Sanzu and Senju making video started as a hobby, but then they became popular and Takeomi decide to making them into celebrities.
Izana and Kakucho: work hard to achieve their dream and create an organization to help orphans.
Mucho, Mocchi and Shion: they keep following Izana, so they work at his organization.
Haitani brothers: they have to stand out and live a paripi lifestyle.

SPOILERS THROUGH TR278!
I've been trying to digest the fact that in the final timeline Kisaki is supposedly not obsessive and violent anymore, so I came up with a theory that attempts to understand it.
I want to preface this with the obvious fact that having friends (particularly Takemichi) at a young age certainly benefited him, but it didn't feel like a complete explanation for how we went from a main antagonist to a silly little guy who's just a bit blunt sometimes. If he wasn't going to be obsessive and violent about Hina and Takemichi I would have guessed he'd become obsessive and violent about something/someone else.
We don't really know much about the final timeline, which is a bit frustrating, but what we do know is that in addition to Takemichi befriending Kisaki, Shinichiro lives.
So here's my theory: Kisaki was affected by Shinichiro's curse in the main timeline of the series. Since the curse and dark impulses weren't explained too precisely I can only speculate, but it seems that people near Shinichiro close to his time of death were affected. First, we have Mikey, who Shinichiro saved in exchange for the curse. Then, we have Kazutora, who was controlled by the dark impulses to karmically kill Shinichiro soon after he transferred his power to Takemichi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, obviously we know Kisaki isn't someone who's even remotely impulsive (except for maybe when he has Hina and Takemichi killed, but even that would be a big stretch to call it impulsive), but maybe the darkness of the curse, not the impulsivity, manifested in Kisaki somehow, since his and Shinichiro's paths crossed on the day he met Takemichi. As Mikey says, the curse "affected everyone around him".
I think that Kisaki, already vulnerable to darkness due to his loneliness, became further corrupted by Shinichiro's curse. And on some level, I think he knew this, as there are a few hints.
Kisaki refers to himself as being a "supposed dark hero" in the Tenjiku battle. This always intrigued me because it's the only time he uses this term. He only ever refers to Takemichi as "hero", and in the Picaresque chapter, he says "I will never be the main hero". I can't say if he knew of any curse, but he realized that there was a darkness in himself that prevented him from being a "good" hero.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additionally, we can recall that he called himself "the shadow that Toman casts". He says this because he's been given permission to "guide Mikey's darkness", but he also speaks quite similarly to Osanai before he even meets Mikey, when he says "the moon can't shine on its own". When he says this, he is referring to the fact that the shining moon must cast a shadow, a darkness, and that he is willing to be that darkness for Osanai. He uses the exact same metaphor for himself and Mikey later on.
This is important because it demonstrates that he didn't need Mikey to ask him to guide his darkness. Kisaki already embraced the role of the dark shadow by then.
When Mikey fires Kisaki, Kisaki doesn't only speak of his darkness just to appeal to Mikey, it's part of his character as a whole, and it's a running theme for him, just as it was for Mikey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The metaphor and choice of the word "darkness" are reminiscent of the way Mikey describes a darkness in himself, and Kisaki speaking in this way prior to meeting Mikey is indicative of the fact that he already had a similar darkness inside of him. I think this was a deliberate choice made by the author, and not only for the sake of general character comparison.
I don't know if Kisaki would have known about a curse, especially because we don't even know how he knew about time leaping, but that's secondary to the fact that he knew he had a darkness regardless of how that came to be. And with the curse avoided and Takemichi befriending Kisaki, the sources of his loneliness and darkness were gone.
Of course, if Kisaki was affected by the curse, it begs the question why other characters were not (ie, Baji, Hinata), and honestly, I don't have a clue why that would be, so this weakens my theory a lot.
Nevertheless, in the new timeline where Shinichiro is alive, Mikey and Kazutora don't act with the same dark impulsivity as in the other timelines, and Kisaki isn't obsessive and violent. I found it hard to accept that Kisaki was so changed because we don't know the full story, and I wish I knew more, but I think this theory does an okay job at beginning to explain how he operates as a character. If the curse really did affect him, then you could say that he really was the shadow cast by Mikey, since the curse was born from saving him.
