Eleven/Amy/Rory fic series update (pt. 14)
And here we have it! The River-in-Torchwood fic! This one is a very important detour before we get to the Master, because this is all about River's story- her stepping into archaeology, her finding a balance between her life's mission and being human, her adjusting to being mortal, and her learning to embrace softness and friendship and love while still being a valuable part of the team. Plus, River & Martha friendship, movie references, KARAOKE NIGHT, and River/Tosh moments!
Also, sorry, but there is literally no Eleven/Amy/Rory content in this one. They're off taking care of things off-page. This should be the only fic in the series like this, but it was vitally important to have this fic take place. So I hope y'all still enjoy this one- I really liked the vibe before we get into the confrontation with the Master next.

Note
my blood is red and unafraid of living (title ask)
(blood! I love it!)
During a mission Gwen gets bitten by a vicious alien predator that takes the form of a harpy.
Its venom takes root, and Gwen soon starts to find patches of scales break out on her skin. She can feel the wings under her blades, the fangs in her jaw, claws at her fingers, bursting to get out. She sees herself in her dreams, flying, screaming, soaring.
Bit by bit, she is transforming, and soon she will be a monster straight from her childhood nightmares.
She hasn't told her team. She doesn't know if there's anything they can do to stop her transformation.
She doesn't know if she wants them to.

WIP tag meme
Tagged by @firstaudrina ! <3
Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! Tag as many people as you feel like tagging because you haven't had breakfast yet and your brain is oatmeal.
Now, I am not gonna post EVERY wip file I have because this would be 300 feet long, but I’ll post all the ones that have like a snowball’s chance in hell of still being worked on now and again!
The List:
Sandman (misc. the sandman)
much ado about nandermo (wwdits)
garter sequel (ofmd)
wwdits stuff
Bees’ Books at Bedtime (mix of fandoms)
Stuck in the Middle (chapter 3A) (dghda)
Memo Enchanted (wwdits)
Badlands (You Gotta Live It Every Day) (shadowhunters)
weapon!Ed (ofmd)
spider funn, spider funn, does whatever a spider done (wooden overcoats)
cat & mouse (wwdits)
God, I Pity the Violins (hannibal)
DGHDA/Torchwood: story + misc ideas (dghda/torchwood)
Jimon (shadowhunters)
Candle on the Water (spn)
sinyard (wooden overcoats)
The Elusive 80s AU (dghda)
misc wooden overcoats
Stuff with the very broad titles, I’ve recently started trying to cut down on extraneous docs by throwing all my fic scribblings for particular fandoms/pairings into one doc and making a separate doc if a particular idea gets big enough to need breathing room! I’m still writing lots here and there, I just rarely get anything to a point where it feels post-ready these days. I just hoard ideas and scribblings like a dragon <3 But if anyone’s curious about any if these please do hit me up you know I love the attention :3
Gonna tag @girl-bateman @kieren-fucking-walker @kelpiemomma @victorluvsalice if y’all fancy it; and indeed anyone else in the habit of writey things, do the thing if it please you!!

Ask Game?
Send me a number, 1-6, by itself or with an emotion word, and I will give you a sentence from one of my six WIPs that has to do with it (my WIPs are emotional rollercoasters).
Alternatively, if you have knowledge of what my WIPs are, you can ask me about specific ones if you don't want to be surprised.

If you're indeed taking requests atm, then are there any rules or conditions that we should be aware of? Do they need to involve certain fandoms and such? And are crossovers allowed too?
Hey, Anon!
I'm so sorry that I'm just now seeing this!
I work 40 hours a week on my feet 9 hours every day, so I'm exhausted a lot and I tend to miss messages. (But I will always get to them)
You're completely right, I should probably add some rules. I'll post something more official on my master list soon, but for now I think just some simple stuff?
I only really have time to write on my days off, so I won't be able to get stories out immediately. I also have the right to deny prompts for reasons, say, for example, I do not know the character/fandom well enough to feel comfortable righting for them.
I will write smut! But I'm not the best at writing it, so there may be some smut prompts I wouldn't feel comfortable writing.
Regarding if they need to be from certain fandoms, I don't think so! Like I said, if I don't know the fandom, I'll just straight up say it. No harm no foul. And crossovers are allowed I'm totally not working on a Daredevil/Torchwood crossover right now idk what you're talking about
More soon!

the thing is that martha and the doctor are an interesting, complicated, eternally evolving in my head dynamic that completely change the game of the narrative, and I am so into them and I will think about them forever and ever
and on the other hand I suspect that at least a certain percent of it comes from my specific reading of the doctor-as-character, and from things that the writing brought up around martha, her position in her family, her history as a medical student, her later decision to join UNIT and Torchwood, her more-than-average complex feelings both during and after being a Companion about what that life meant for her, and what the doctor changed in her life, that I would say were intentional, but weren't brought up in a narrative that was given as much space and time (ha) as other companions, and so she is eternally left in character limbo where I can only ask questions (and read fanfic) and stipulate on what this story was all about for her, and where she went as consequence, and what her feelings are about having been within it, and of course the parts that aged more poorly related to a bunch of white people writing a black woman as a lead character who weren't so well-versed on nuance as one would wish... so it's also the most frustrating dynamic in nu!who, if not all of doctor who, for me, because there is no attempt at giving it a proper end from her side, in the way there has been for so many other companions, including of course lots and lots of classic!who companions
on the third hand you would really want that potential bringing-back to be interesting in a way that interacts with their past dynamic, and fun for freema to do, and you'd worry about the amount of racist backlash that might occur, because nobody was giving martha grace as a character in the first place, would this past complexity that seemed to go over a lot of peoples' heads be something that the show perhaps should be more explicit about, so that there is no ambiguity as to how this series of events affected her and why it's more complicated than with other companions, and how does it both honour her character's inherent strengths, while also not having to make her be so strong All The Damn Time
on the fourth hand... just wanna see her again. and she'd be fire opposite ncuti, you know she would

torchwood fanfic resources
so i'm a chronic livejournal archaeologist, and fixating on 2000s media is particularly fun for me because it means i get to go digging on lj / dw / old fanfic forums. below you'll find some of the excavations from my torchwood fixation (give it up for month 6!) it's pretty much got every comm i've ever stumbled upon and found useful, or thought others would find useful. it's largely fanfic-oriented, though there's some more generalized comms, too. i hope you guys enjoy!
i was originally going to include a link to my reclist on this post as well, but it's still a wip, so i'll just post that separately in the future.
general disclaimer: most of the content here is from 2006-2013 or so. period-typical attitudes may pop up in places. i'm not sure if most modern tw fans have witnessed the original fandom at all, but i felt a need to say this anyway, because i've seen some icky stuff. i've warned for anything notable. gwen bashing in particular may unfortunately pop up in some of these comms, especially in the comments, so tread carefully.
if you're new to probing through old lj comms, remember to always have the wayback machine on hand, because you're going to run into a lot of purged accounts and seemingly lost fics, but sometimes you get lucky and something's been archived :)
as of the date i'm posting this, all of these comms are still accessible, but if you're from the future and some have been deleted, again, go ahead and give the wayback machine a try. additionally, livejournal has a system that includes 'cross-posting' in which, if authors choose to (and the majority of them do, to get their fics more visibility), fics get posted to multiple comms at once. so chances are, even if one comm gets deleted, the contents will survive through other comms. kind of like how reblogs continue to exist even when the original blog is deleted.
finally, ctrl + f is your best friend if you have a specific ship/character/trope you're invested in, especially in comms with less than ideal tagging systems. if a comm does have a substantial tagging system, you can find all of its tags by adding '/tags' the end of the urls i've provided.
ok... let's begin :-)
assorted livejournal communities
✎ torch-wood: this is essentially a torchwood subreddit. it started before the show even aired, and one of the highlights of it is episode reaction posts (easily accessible on the right side of the lj) that document how everyone immediately reacted to the eps, which is pretty damn cool, fandom-history wise. only thing i should mention is there's quite a lot of gwen and owen bashing in the comments of some of those reaction posts, so just be wary of that if you love those two like i do, 'cuz it's a bit of a bummer.
✎ torchwood-three: this comm is an extremely cool then-daily newsletter (that still updates sometimes?!) that compiled as much fan-content as it could find into cleanly organized lists. the posts made immediately after new episodes aired contain reactions, discussions, meta, theories, new fic, fanmixes, just about everything. very very cool to go back and see the way the fandom was thinking as the show was airing and as they were getting to know the characters. here's a direct link to all posts made in late 2006, during the airing of s1.
✎ torchwood-fic: exactly what it says on the tin. desktop layout is easy to navigate, tags are all there!
✎ torchwood-fic's profile page also features a list of affiliated accounts that's pretty handy. it's worth taking a peek at, in case i've excluded anything in this post that you might be interested in.
✎ twgenrefinders: handy dandy comm where people would ask for fics of a certain variety & be treated with reclists, or hyper-specific fics... pretty cool stuff, ive got several threads bookmarked to sort through the links later. ofc, please note that some of the things people asked for might be stinky. particularly i've seen a lot of ppl requesting gwen bashing fics :/
✎ twstoryfinder: cousin to the above comm; here, people would ask for a very specific fic they'd lost. it's kind of fun to find fics through because you get someone describing memorable scenes + hyping it up, so it's different than just a standard summary. this one still gets posted on, too, which is crazyyy.
✎ tw-unpaired: for gen fics! no romance allowed! there's some good character studies + friendship fics in there. stuff's tagged by character + authors are even tagged, in case you find one whose writing you particularly enjoy. this is v useful for when someone's main journal has been deleted.
✎ torchwood-decaf: a comm where janto is BANNED. nah i'm kidding, it's not anti-janto, it was just made because janto is so huge that it overshadows everything else. pretty smart, tbh; wading through the sheer mass of janto content can be tiresome.
✎ jack-in-cuffs: for dark tw fic, or uber smutty tw fic. as a fan of dark!fic, there's some goodies in here, but of course it's not everyone's cup of tea. most of the writers included warnings, but if you go a little further back, some people weren't as courteous; navigate with caution.
✎ jack-owen: for fic featuring our captain and his (second favorite) doctor. i know this pairing's kinda divisive nowadays, but i enjoy it a lot. the comm's got a dismal tagging system and, ngl, i don't truly like any of the fics there (i'm very intrigued by jack and owen's relationship but i've never found fic that really does them justice, and i still haven't figured out how to write them myself) - but i'll include it anyway.
✎ odetojoi: for fic featuring owen in the middle of a janto sandwich, for those of us who are allergic to women (/sarcasm). there's an oddly impressive supply of fics of the three of them, and a good chunk of them can be found in this comm. (everytime i see this comm i think of a certain abbreviation found in p/rnogr/phy... but i digress)
✎ halfwee-and-tea: for ianto x owen fic. haven't gone through this one much, truthfully. i hate when comms have no tagging systems agh.
✎ owenharper-fans: a comm for the saddest undeadest bisexualest doctor around. also features a few burn appreciation posts, which is nice to see pre-pac rim era. mostly just features a shit ton of owen fic, particularly owen x ianto fic. mostly sufficiently tagged. if you need me once i post this, btw, i will be balls deep in this comm.
✎ the pro-owen alliance: another owen-focused comm - i think this one was made directly in response to owen bashing. haven't combed through this one much but it's got a fair amount of fics.
✎ house-of-cooper: a gwen comm! made in response to gwen bashing. haven't gone through it, but i'm glad it exists.
✎ torchwoodcoffee: ianto comm! this one's hugeee. the majority of it's janto, but the pairings aren't tagged, which is really frustrating. about 6k fics on there, though! just untagged. fff.
✎ tw-femficfest: a comm for fic about any and all of the torchwood ladies. tagging's cleanly done & there's some handy fic round ups, too.
✎ tw-femslash: yuri!!! wahoo!!! a comm for f/f tw ships. there's quite a lot of fic on here, but unfortunately there's no tagging whatsoever. sigh.
✎ tw-classic: a comm for 'all things series one and two of torchwood'. was made after s3 and was popular around s4 out of nostalgia for the golden age <3 good amount of fic, discussions, etc.
✎ torchwood-house: this comm is, like, letterboxd, but for torchwood fanfic. basically a group of individuals who thought of themselves as having Good Taste would read Good Fic and then go in this comm and write a post about why they recommend it. it's well-made, easy to scroll through, and sells the fics v well, and it kinda gets you more excited to read them when you get to see someone hype them up with Fancy Words. it's like a little torchwood yaoi bookclub. we're eating quiche
✎ tw100: a drabble challenge; this thing's full of 100 word drabbles. ngl i hate drabbles but i'm throwing it in here anyway
✎ touchyerwood: i love kink memes... i love kink memes less when my favorite character/pairing is unpopular. the pac rim kink meme's been a blessing bc i'm a basic ass newmann - the torchwood kink meme? not so much. it's got a fair amount of shit, though, so maybe someone else will appreciate it. this one isn't the original, that one's been wiped off the internet, to my chagrin. keep in mind before digging that people in kink memes are horny & gross. that's your warning.
✎ reel-torchwood: for any and all movie aus... ok i have a bone to pick with this comm. i'm a big movie nerd, i love film, i've seen dozens of films i've thought would make good aus - i combed through this and there is not a SINGLE fic in there that piqued my interest. NOTHING. needless to say my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. i'm sure my experiences aren't universal though.
✎ torchwoodslash: ah, remember when we called it slash? gee whiz. i'm not big on this comm, it's not very user friendly + there's like no tags whatsoever so it's extremely hard to navigate. enter at your own risk & good luck, lol.
✎ rounds-of-kink: this isn't a torchwood-exclusive comm, but it's got a sizeable torchwood tag, which can be found here. pretty organized tagging system; makes me happy.
✎ tw-declassified: this comm was mainly used for running a 'torchwood bingo', which, i've been in other fandoms that do episode bingos and it's usually cute... this one confused me a little so i didn't bother peeking around too much, but still a cool little bit of fandom history.
✎ writerinadrawer: this was an annual torchwood writer's challenge that ran for four years... it's kinda hard to navigate but it does have some fic in it so i'm putting it here.
✎ dmarley-recs: a recs journal someone ran for compiling torchwood fic; it's got a l o t of recs on there, largely jack/ianto.
ok and straying from lj briefly for two other places to find fic...
✎ kink_bingo: this is a dreamwidth comm, and it's not torchwood-exclusive, so i've linked straight to the torchwood tag. this comm has a livejournal equivalent, but for some reason the tw tag is pretty barren on that one? not sure why. but on dw it's got a fair amount. the tagging system is rough, it tags fandom and kink but not pairing, which is irritating, and every post is hidden under a cut AND makes you go through a discretion barrier every single time (but probably only if you don't have an account? i'm not logged in) which makes navigation a pain. but i dunno, more smut, if you want it.
✎ whofic.com: this site is for doctor who fic, but it's got a very substantial amount of torchwood fic. i do not, however, like the formatting at all. i'm being overly nice; i HATE the formatting. it's very reminiscent of fanfic dot net but, like, worse. it reminds me of adultfanfiction dot org which was a NIGHTMARE to use. but! there is torchwood fic there so it's going in here.
aaaand there we go! that's all i have. i hope these prove handy! enjoy :D

Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
Sooo I wasn't sure what actually counts as a WIP? Like, if I haven't opened the document since 2022... is it really still in progress? 😅

Twenty Questions for Fic Writers
Ooh lots of fun questions, thank you @justhugsplz for tagging me <3
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
25.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
61,430 which is absolutely mind-boggling to me. And of those about 45k are Tatort Wien. Which I started writing exactly one year ago. For comparison, I've been writing fanfic for over 20 years and until I fell into Tatort fandom in 2021 I'd posted less than 3k in total.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Exclusively Tatort Wien at the moment. If I ever manage to peek my head out of that particular rabbit hole, I might get back to some Münster WIPs. Not in the near future, though :D
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Aufgeben -> Der Anruf -> Die Welt in unseren Händen -> Bordsteingespräche -> Loslassen
Haha, Tatort Münster with a little sprinkle of Wien. I don't usually sort by kudos, so it's a bit surprising to see Die Welt in unseren Händen rank so high. Well, high in a range between 75 and 34. That's just how it is in small fandoms :D
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes, always. Sometimes it takes a while to get to it. But I always want to take the time and energy to write a proper response, because a) if someone else took the time and energy to tell me how they feel about my story, the least I can do is tell them how much I appreciate them commenting. and b) A comment always feels like the start of a conversation to me. I remember the long comment/discussion threads under fanfic on Livejournal and I miss the community of that. Nowadays it often feels like there's this growing gulf between author and reader, probably because of the current content creator/consumer culture that does little to invite equality or discussion.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Silence, a Torchwood CoE fic about John Frobisher's last moments.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Bordsteingespräche. I'm really proud of how everything came together in the end in that one :)
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope, thankfully never.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
If you'd asked me that a month ago, I would have said no. But recently I kind of got over my terminal embarrassment at even trying to write anything smutty. I haven't posted anything yet, but there's several fics/chapters in the works. Tbh I don't find vanilla sex interesting and most of the usual kinks in fanfic are either squicks or a snooze-fest to me. The stuff that I am writing is either weirdly specific kink or just downright unsexy (which my characters are having a frankly outrageous amount of fun with atm, bless them).
I'm a bit hesitant to put any real smut in a fic that isn't actually primarily about the smut. I fear enough people might be put off by that, so hardly anyone would end up reading it then. Bit of a stupid fear to have, perhaps, but still...
(Yes, I know, I should just get over it and simply write and post whatever the hell I want 😅)
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I've had a lot of crossover ideas over the years, but the only thing I've ever written was an MCU/Agents of Shield thingie I hacked out during NaNoWriMo a couple of years ago. Let's be honest, that combination is the least crazy crossover of all time and hardly counts as a crossover at all. Like 99% of the stuff I've ever written during NaNo, it's completely horrible, unfinished and should never see the light of day again.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Don't think so.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I've translated Bordsteingespräche myself, but was very unhappy with the result, which is why it's unavailable at the moment. It's going to get reworked at some point.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Many many years ago, when the world was still young and some of you not yet born 😂, the lovely @hope-calaris and I cooked up a tentative plot for a rather ambitious Star Trek: Voyager fanfic. We didn't end up writing that one, but later co-wrote a CSI: Miami one with someone else iirc and I believe there might have been a 4400 (?) fic, also. Due to depression, my memory of that time is hazy at best, though, so it's possible that I'm missing or misremembering things there.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
Didn't expect this question to be so difficult to answer, but is kinda is... 🙈 I guess any combination of my 3 Tatort Wien blorbos. Apart from that, Boerne/Thiel and Stephen Strange/Tony Stark are ships I can always come back to.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The aforementioned MCU/AoS time-travel epic.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, especially banter-y dialogue. And editing sentences/paragraphs for maximum impact (when I take the time to do it)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Action. What characters are doing, how they're moving, getting them from A to B and so on. Ugh.
External conflict. I despise conflict in real life and find it extremely difficult to write. You won't find an antagonist in any of my current stories or wips. And when I do write conflict between characters, that's always rooted in their internal conflicts and mostly the result of them not communicating properly.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
It's very hard to do right. Translations in footnotes are annoying and leave me confused while reading. Translations in brackets behind the dialogue also annoying and missing the point of having different-language dialogue in the first place. It can be good when the author puts enough context there that you can get the gist of what is being said without needing an actual translation.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
X-Files. There's probably some 23-year old notebooks in the back of a drawer somewhere at my mom's house that have fanfic snippets mixed with homework assignments.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Oof, that's another difficult one. I have several that are favourites for different reasons.
Bordsteingespräche for the sheer joy and ease with which it was written.
Kaputt for how much of my heart and soul I'm putting into it.
Die Welt in unseren Händen, because after twenty years of trying and failing I am now finally writing an epic long-form multi-chapter fanfic and I have so many plans and ideas for it. I cannot put into words just how wild that is. And I simply adore this version of my favourite characters.
No-pressure tagging @carlomenzinger, @kathastrophen and @all-my-worlds-a-stage if you want to :)

In regards to your Eleven/Amy/Rory fic. I CALLED IT! I KNEW! I KNEW ITD BE THE MASTER!!!!!! AND YET!!! YOU STILL SURPRISED ME WITH THE WAY IT WAS REVEALED!!!!
ABSOLUTE SPOILERS HERE, but yep! I had a lot of fun with the big bad for this "season"- I really hope I can pull off writing the Master well once they're actually on page. I'm really exciting about how everyone's character arcs are playing out in the confrontation scene I'm writing- things are going to get very bad for a bit before they get better, but I'm hoping I've been building everything up well enough that the pay off is going to feel really, really earned!
Also, thank you so much! I decided rather early on I was going to get Eleven to Jack and Martha at Torchwood and picked the Master as the main villain around the same time (this was about the time I posted the second fic in the series, almost from the moment I decided I was going through with the River Song plotline). It was just a matter of getting these three plot points to gel, and the character development has really propelled these moments together. The reveal of the Master can also be completely attributed to me rewatching the Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords three-parter (as well as the rest of Season 3, while I was at it) because it made me realize that I really wanted that foreshadowing/gut-punch reveal that the show had for the Master. I also very, very much needed Jack and Martha to hear it first and have a moment to mull on it before deciding to tell the Doctor (AS A SIGN OF TRUST, because of their reconciliation in the earlier part of this series).
And then getting Rory's POV on the reveal, and watching him witness the fury of the Time Lords for the first time...let's just say that as much as I love every character arc/POV in this first arc of the fic series, my favorite one is Rory's, because it combines so much of my favorite parts of both Martha and Rose's arcs while also being so quintessentially Rory Pond.
Because at the end of the day, Rory Pond is a nurse. A caretaker. And he is one of the few companions to really stand up to the Doctor/be a voice of reason. He is kind and stubborn and the first person to lend a gentle hand to someone who's hurt. And some episodes really squandered that potential in the show, but he is shining and shining bright here.
Can't wait for you to read the next two fics (and, well, all the rest, but these two are so very important for everyone's characters/the main themes of this first arc of the series)!

"She loves you when you hate her and
You love her when she leaves you"
Post Gwen's latest retirement attempt, she's trying to live a normal life. Date nights with Rhys, movie evenings with the kids, hosting rift refugees as they wait to get a lift to their home world.
Things are going good, until she finds herself getting dragged back into the game. Jack needs her for a job, and it can only be her. But the years have been hard for this former dream team, and it doesn't take long for things to turn sour.
The two find themselves stranded on a spaceship, millions of years away from Earth, with no way to escape, no way to get help. It's down to the two of them to take control of the ship, and save themselves and the other captives from a fate worse than death.
They've got the plan, they've got the guts, but the question is, can they get through the mission without killing each other? Can the echoes of their friends, long gone but now walking and talking, help mend their fractured relationship, before it's too late for them all?

Get to Know Your Fanfic Writer!
tagged by @jesuisici33 ❤️
When did you post your first ever fanfic?
2013, it was for Torchwood. It was a pairing between my oc and Jack Harkness. I’m pretty sure it’s still on wattpad somewhere.
First character(s) you wrote for:
A lot of what I have written has been for my ocs so I think it would have to be David & Matteo from Druck.

“Oh there you are”, Buck called out.
Hen, who was sitting with her arms around Karen who was sitting on her lap, beamed then “Did the mastermind find you?”, she asked
Eddie had hummed, nodding his head only a few seconds later before he closed the door once Christopher was in the room “Yes, he was being very coy”, he answered “And... Christopher told him”, he added.
Christopher just half turned towards him “I couldn’t help it, okay?”, he said with a roll of the eyes
Eddie just laughed “I know”, he said before he moved and kissed him on the top of the head

Female Character Defence #1: Gwen Cooper
Tumblr media
Honestly, there's so much to be said and I don't have all the words. It'll probably be the same for them all.
Gwen is such a wonderful character - she is intended as the audience's conduit in Torchwood. So, of course, she asks questions, learns about the world as she goes and makes mistakes. But so many people take that to mean that she's dumb. Gwen is NOT dumb! She's fiercely intelligent, but the point of her character is to ask questions we would ask! She also makes mistakes, like we all would, and like the other characters do, and that is no reason to hate her!
Onto the main reason she gets so much shit - she, like many other female characters I'll be writing about, is seen as 'getting in the way'🙄 of a mlm relationship. Now, unusually, in Torchwood's case, the mlm couple is actually canon.
Now I love Ianto and Jack, I do. They were the first ship I ever read fanfiction for, and I've adored them since the start. But Jack also has chemistry with Gwen, and that is not a bad thing! Jack likes so many people, of all genders and species, and he is attracted to Gwen, and Gwen to him. That is not a valid reason to hate her - a lot of us in the fandom find Jack attractive, and Jack isn't villainised for his attraction, so your misogyny is showing.
But Gwen does not 'get in the way' AT ALL! Jack and Ianto are shown from the beginning to have a flirtatious relationship, and when they begin a romantic relationship they are monogamous to one another and neither cheat. There is no threat from Gwen - Gwen and Rhys spend their time happily together/married, and Jack and Ianto spend their time happily together.
YES, there is a mutual attraction between Jack and Gwen, but neither of them act on it bar their kiss in episode 2 of series 1 (BEFORE Janto got together) and a few flirty remarks/looks. The fact that Gwen is so hated for 'getting in the way' of a ship that she does not, in fact, get in the way of and also, wholeheartedly supports, is super irritating.
Also, a lot of people seem to miss Ianto and Gwen's friendship!!! Of course, they are co-workers, but as with most of the Torchwood team, they are friends too. Ianto and Gwen often casually touch one another and banter together, and they genuinely care about each other and to put Gwen in a position in fanfics and your head where she is a rival to Ianto, a bully or even a threat is doing both of those characters a MASSIVE DISSERVICE.
Now, I could go on forever, but I believe the main reason Gwen gets so much vitriol is because she is seen as dumb - despite her being shown to be extremely smart and competent - and that she is seen as a romantic rival to Ianto which is blatantly untrue and reduces not only Gwen but Jack, Ianto and Rhys to no more than their romantic relationships.
In conclusion, Gwen Cooper is a brilliant character - funny, smart, beautiful, sarcastic, flawed and interesting - and she is unfairly hated by a fandom who refuses to confront their internalised misogyny and sexist views, and who seem to think that supporting the 'gay' ship (which is a misnomer as Ianto is a BISEXUAL MAN and Jack is OMNISEXUAL/PANSEXUAL) makes them better than fans who like the central female protagonist.

For the fanfic writer ask game: 7, 14, 19, 34, and 40, please! 😊
Hi hi!! Thank you for all these ❤️
7. Share the first line of your five most recently published fics.
A Lesson in Dynamics - James smiled as he turned the corner, slowing his pace as he took in the way Nikola lurked awkwardly by the door.
A Lesson in Denial - When Nigel walked into the room, his first instinct was to walk straight back out.
Stupid - It was stupid.
See No Evil - “Helen, my darling, my dear,” he began, strolling into the room with arms open wide.
A Lesson in Domestication - Once upon a time Nikola would have described having sex in a library as sacrilegious.
(and literally everything on this list is rated E, so, you know, proceed with caution)
14. What two fandoms would you write a crossover for?
Hmm... That's hard. I've never had a compulsion to write crossovers. My brain isn't really wired that way, I think. My hyperfixations have a tendancy to stand alone...
I've seen some good Sanctuary/Torchwood ones though. Like, Captain Jack with Helen would be explosive in all the best ways!
19. What headcanon do you always include in your stories?
That Helen and Nikola were absolutely sleeping together for a hot minute there. Nothing overly serious, but you can't convince me that they didn't get together when she moved across the Atlantic... When they started often changes on the story, but I absolutely believe that their banter can totally be backed up!
34. What title do you want to use, but can't figure out a story to fit?
See, my issue with titles is often the opposite. My favourite stories almost always don't have a title until the very last minute, and generally I'm not super pleased with them. Either the title happens as I start to write, or I have to drag it kicking and screaming from the half finished corpse of the story.
Sorry!! No real answer for this one...
40. Pick one of your fics and share a quote to go with it (not a quote from the fic, but an outside quote that fits)
“Of all things, I liked books best.” - Nikola Tesla.
Which was the actual inspiration for the first version of the first chapter of 'Domestication' (which was originally a oneshot with no real home that, as I wrote, decided to become part of the Lessons universe).
