The Haunting of Amy Pond
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amy Pond, Doctor Who | aletterinthenameofsanity, there are lessons in life no one should have to learn (pretty little things wilt away)
(In which I read @aletterinthenameofsanity's Amy Pond character study and I just had to pull out my favorite lines and put them to images from the show because the imagery kicked me in the nuts.)

Y'know I find it incredibly ironic that in my Chronicles of Narnia fic series, an interesting inversion in fate (and character development) finds the most rebellious among the most devoted to restoring Aslan’s kingdom, while the most faithful fell the furthest. Edmund turns back at the tree and becomes a king of Narnia alongside Caspian, helping guide it into a new golden age and earning the title of the Once and Future King, while Lucy literally becomes an eldritch goddess and is implied to have straight up killed Aslan at some point. Edmund gets his redemption arc and then some, becoming one of the greatest kings in Narnian history, securing the legacy of Aslan, while Lucy, the most faithful, falls further than even Lucifer and ends up usurping God himself, not because she desires power, but because she sees the way that Aslan uses it as unjust.
And yet...both of them are doing this for the same reason. To be a champion of the downtrodden. To correct injustice. To secure themselves and their own kingdoms so that it can never be stolen from them again.
Gotta love some foils/parallels!

now my love is gone (and I can’t help the fracturing)
Carlos Reyes x T.K. Strand. Post s04e04 Abandoned. Kidnapping angst. Crossposted on ao3.
When he died, all things soft and beautiful and bright would be buried with him.
― Madeline Miller
There's a moment when you realize that you're about to die. A moment when you realize that death is far closer, and far more inevitable, than life is.
It is a feeling that Carlos knows his fiance is intimate with. T.K. once joked- and received a glare from Carlos for- that he and that moment are best friends at his point.
But Carlos? He's never felt it before. He's never been put into a coma from addiction or being shot on the job. He's always been the one sitting by the hospital bed, praying that the line doesn't go flat, hoping beyond hope, never giving in to the grasp of pessimism. T.K. told him once, awe in his voice, that he doesn't know how to be that optimistic. That that sense of hope is something he's always loved about Carlos.
Well, hope is deserting Carlos in this moment. As Trudy heads for the door with that butcher knife in her hand, Carlos doesn't scream. He can't attract T.K.'s attention when Trudy's knife is inches from sinking into T.K.'s neck. Carlos can see it in his mind- the blood on the tile, the police rushing over. It would be a godsend for his own life, but a death certificate in T.K.'s name.
And Carlos can't bear that. He refuses to even entertain the possibility.
His struggles cease as he hears Trudy make some sort of excuse about a cat and T.K. flashes her that kind smile he always has, understanding as can be. Carlos can't begin to imagine what T.K. is thinking in this moment, how much he knows, how much he suspects, but as that door closes, Carlos stares at the camera feed, at what might be his final glimpse of T.K.'s face. He soaks in every detail- the look of concentration in those bright eyes, the messy waves on his head from running his fingers through his hair in stress, the off-angle of his jacket collar because he always forgets to straighten his civilian clothing like he does his uniform.
Then the door swings shut, sealing Carlos back into hell. The window is still there, but he is limbless, voiceless, powerless against even a little old woman and her knife, much less her serial killer son whenever he returns. Carlos is doomed to die, having had one final glimpse at the man he loves, one last chance at salvation.
Then Trudy returns, and she's talking about how handsome T.K. is as if nothing is wrong, and he can't stand it. Can't stand the fact that he's going to die here and no one might ever know how it happened, if Trudy's son manages to cover it up as well as he did the rest of his kills. Carlos' body will get dumped somewhere and the connection will never get made and T.K. will get made into a widower before they're even fucking married and Carlos isn't one to be overemotional but it's not fucking fair, they've been through too much to have it end this way-
Trudy bends down next to him, knife in hand, and pulls the tape from his face. "Is T.K. still there?" Carlos whispers, voice dry, and Trudy smiles and shakes her head.
T.K. is out of range. Nothing that Carlos does will endanger him. That blade will never make its way close to his neck. Carlos won't have to see the blood splatter across the title.
Carlos lets out a scream, vicious and burning because this is his last chance, his one shot, and-
And she sticks the morphine needle in his arms.
Carlos' world goes hazy and he can't hear Trudy properly and all he can think is he would have done anything to make it home to T.K. but here and now he and death are looking each other in the eye, and death is not the one flinching.

I saw you enjoyed fanfiction by aletterinthenameofsanity (same here, btw!) and I was wondering if you knew that she wrote a book? It's called Burn the House Down by Kenna Jenkins. It's an alternate history novel abt the 1st woman president and her secret sapphic relationship/bearded marriage with her mlm best friend. It also includes a subplot about arson at the White House, ft. An entirely queer main cast and really fleshed out characters, and has a really satisfying ending!
It's always pretty cool to hear about people whose fanfic you've liked are also writing their own fiction. And the blurb sounds pretty interesting! I will be putting it down on my TBR list, for sure.

✩ WEEKLY FIC ROUND-UP ✩
All the fics I’ve read and really enjoyed in the past week-ish. Reminder: This list features any and all ratings and themes. Please look at tags and warnings on ao3 before reading.
Shadowhunters
Enthrallment by smilebackwards
It does look a little bad, Parmela thinks, looking at it from outside. As more specialists had been called in for consultation, they’d decamped to one of the larger conference rooms—eschewing attendance at A, B, AB, & O: The Impact of Blood Type on Non Subject Specific Blood Magic, because this was vastly more interesting and potentially important—and there are a round dozen high-level warlocks clustered around Alec, poking at him with magic.
Or: Alec attends the Magical Inventions and Advances convention in hopes of recruiting warlocks for another Downworld Cabinet. The warlocks, however, are more interested—and concerned—by the blue magical aura following Alec around.

Part 1 of the odds were never in our favor
Ben knows his fellow mentors pretty well, for how long he's spent here, behind the screens of the Games, watching as his tributes die.
Allison, from District One, has a way with the sponsors. Just a word placed here or there, stealthily dropped into conversation, and she can get her tributes the shit they need.
In his time as a Mentor, Klaus has developed a habit of drinking to get through the Games, and through the rest of his life, really- anything to avoid the truth of what's happening, the ghosts of the children he and Ben have sent to their deaths.
Very few people remember what Five’s name was before the Games. Caesar Flickerman and the Gamemakers nicknamed him that when he took out the entire Career Pack on his second day in the Arena.
Vanya’s the newest Mentor, the victor of the Seventy-Third Hunger Games.
Diego’s one of Ben’s oldest not-quite friends. A Victor from District Ten, he’d gone into the Games knowing how to kill an animal.
All the other Mentors Ben knows try never to get attached. Luther, on the other hand, doesn't forget a single name.
(A story of seven victors of the Hunger Games and the lives they live as Mentors.)
Danny Phantom
The Promised Land by redrobin1989
Danny Fenton has been running for years, from his abusive parents, from Vlad's experiments, from his freakish powers. He expected to be running his whole life until he found his way to a small town that felt like the home he'd never had.

Study Dates Are Not Real Dates by StormySteady
A very important exam is coming up, and Asmodeus is trying his hardest to get Iruma and Clara to study for it. But his soulmates have other ideas.
Star Wars
Starlight, In All Its Forms by Soap_And_Lye
When Luke was eight, he was taken from his home on Tatooine and delivered into the hands of the emperor and his right hand.
When Luke was sixteen, he overheard the emperor's plans to steal a tiny Force sensitive child and saves him first, before being caught and dragged back to his masters' keeping.
When Luke was eighteen, he finds that same child on Gideon's cruiser, and spares both him and his family, including a silver clad Mandalorian.
And when Luke was twenty-four, he is captured by the Rebellion (captured or did he just let it happen? Really up for debate) and secretly sent as a prisoner to Mandalore, where Mand'alor Din Djarin rebuilds his planet and raises his son.
And the rest was history. Or the beginning.
Clone Wars
will you be an anarchist with me? by a_alene
Once the Kenobi floodgates are opened, they cannot be closed. Cody has apparently been keeping an itemized list of disagreements, and he is determined to tell Rex each and every one of them.
Kenobi refuses to listen to Cody’s input. Kenobi throws himself into battle with no regard for previously established battle plans. Kenobi uses the Force so recklessly and obviously that every undercover assignment is blown within the first few minutes. Kenobi is a hypocrite who berates Cody for sidestepping protocol, but flouts it himself at every opportunity.
CT-7567: bet you wish you had skywalker now
CC-2224: I wish for nothing but the cold embrace of space
Right. And he says Kenobi’s dramatic.
(Marshal Commander Cody and High General Obi-Wan Kenobi of the 212th cannot stand each other. Rex doesn't know why this is his problem.)

(In which Cody becomes an anonymous poet after the war and his brothers find out.)
Rex launches forwards immediately and so does Bly, because he can admit to himself that he likes gifts. He likes gifts a whole lot more than Cody and Wolffe, anyway, who both act like martyrs who don’t need any material love. “Poetry, vod?” Bly asks, incredulous. “Cody’s right, you are going soft.”
“It’s by a clone,” Fox says, defensively, “it’s quite good, actually. For poetry. It made Sergeant Hound cry at the service.

Nancy as Orpheus (stoncy)
inspired by this work by aletterinthenameofsanity
“My boys,” Nancy snaps, like the words are ripping themselves out of her chest, “are in that hellhole. I’m not leaving them there.”
Eddie pales further, and for a moment Nancy resents him. For caring about her, for trying to stop her. “You’ll die,” he says quietly. “I can’t—I can’t come with you like this. Wait for Robin, Nancy, please.”
She doesn’t know how Eddie ever thought himself a coward, when it’s so clear that he’d follow her if he were capable of walking. He’s not hers, not like Steve and Jonathan are, but he cares so much. Her heart swells. “I won’t die. Not without them.”
“Nancy—“
She smiles as reassuringly as she can. “We’ll be back before you know it.”
“And if you’re not?”
“Write a song about me.”
“Come and get them, Nancy Wheeler,”  he coons in her mind. It’s a cold feeling, slithering up her spine like a snake. She doesn’t let it get to her, just takes a deep breath and grips the knife on her hip.
The Creel house is only two miles from here. As long as she stays away from the vines and keeps quiet, the monsters can’t find her. And if she makes a mistake, Henry won’t tell them.
He thinks himself a god. All-seeing, all-knowing. Omnipotent and powerful. He’ll let her get close, let her see the life bleed from their eyes before he kills her. He made one fatal mistake, though, and it’s that he underestimated her.
He’s more than a man, but not as much as he thinks. And she’s Nancy fucking Wheeler.
She’s getting out of here, and her boys are coming with her.
“You’d lay claim to them?” He smiles, cruel and awful. “You, who doesn’t deserve it? Death follows you like a lover, Nancy, like these boys do. How long did you think you could go without leading another to their demise?”
Her hand falters, and he moves closer. “Fred makes a lovely decoration, don’t you think?”
Unbidden, her eyes follow his gaze to one of the pillars, and she gasps, tears springing to her eyes when she sees the mangled body there. God, Fred.
“He was in so much pain, and you never even noticed he was struggling. Poor boy thought he was going to hell. I saved him, released him from his suffering. Do you believe in Heaven, Nancy Wheeler? Barb did.”
Barb went to church every Sunday. Prayed every night, hands clasped at the foot of her bed. Once, during a sleepover, Nancy heard her asking forgiveness. When she asked what for, Barb turned pale and quietly, firmly told her it was nothing.
“She thought she was in love with you. She needed salvation. I gave that to her. Sad, lonely little Barbara, bleeding while her best friend abandoned her to the mercy of a monster. Was it worth it, Nancy?”
She can’t stop staring at Fred, even as her vision blurs. Barb, her first friend, her first kiss, her closest confidant. Sixteen and alone and dying because Nancy was young and ready and willing to leave her behind for a boy.
“Was it worth it?”
She shakes her head.

Danny and Max for the win!!!
That we agree~ They're so wholesome and oddly respectable in the series that it feels just...nice. I'm usually not a big fan of Blue/Black, but they make it work.
Shame there isn't really all that much out there in the fandom for them. But STILL. I mean, @aletterinthenameofsanity and @rivulet027 have done them up pretty well, but there's always room for more. Someday. Somehow.

push until you can't and then demand more (gotta turn the world into your dance floor)
By aletterinthenameofsanity @aletterinthenameofsanity (sry I just found ur tumblr I only do cursory searches)
On Archive of Our Own
Status: Complete; Oneshot; 3,353 words
Summary: At first Dillon refuses to interact much with anyone in the band. He loves music, but he doesn’t much love his bandmates. But then there’s Ziggy, who originally refused to join, who it took Dillon’s words to convince, who is constantly wearing Dillon down. The way Summer's fingers race down the strings, the way she sings, the way she moves- she was never meant to burn out at the altar, to sacrifice herself for the wishes of those too close-minded to know her for who she really is. When Scott’s singing, the whole world falls to the side. He's able to forget tragedy and life circumstance, to just let the music take him away to another world. There is just him, in focus, the words pouring out and the music moving through his body. The band ends up performing at the Halloween Bash and end up getting banned from performing at school due to the little protest they staged at the end, but that just makes Flynn more determined to keep going. They've started a revolution and Flynn isn't about ready to let it die. (The band that begins from five bitter kids in detention will soon have the world at its feet.)
My thoughts: Ugh I am occassionally a sucker for Dillon. And its a Lemonade Mouth AU, which is a DCOM I still remember fondly. It's cute.

wip word find game
@eriquin tagged me to find words in my WIP(s): round, thought, problem, fortune
I can probably find them all in Emergence, let's find out!
round: (so many arounds and grounds, good lord)
Koragg’s sword rested across the flat plane formed from the round of his skull down to his spine, between his shoulder blades.
thought:
All the breath caught in his lungs, every single thought jettisoning from his head as the barest echo of footsteps caught Chip’s ear.
problem:
These odds were not improving, pretty steadily skewing out of his favor, actually, and that was a capital-P Problem, rapidly descending into a full-on Dilemma.
fortune:
She could float on this feeling, the wash of him, for forever, but they didn’t have that good fortune, not tonight.
tagging: @thefreakandthehair @aletterinthenameofsanity @patchworkgargoyle and anyone else who sees this

Still not over how badly the bag was fumbled with the Olu/Jim storyline in Season 2. I know I just posted about how good the first 3/4 episodes are of the show, but that has one GIANT exception: whatever the hell was going on with the writing of their relationship. I may be biased as they are two of my favorite characters on the show, but I honestly think that from a writing POV, they had possibly the best set up at the end of Season 1 (bar Ed and Stede, and yet I still was more interested in the Tealoranges plotline; oops!) Of friends who had finally admitted their feelings to each other after what is implied to be at least a year of pining, especially in the case of jim, who was notoriously cut off in their feelings until they finally were allowed to have a few hours of Happiness/security/safety for the first time in their LIFE before it was ripped away forcefully. The amount of absolute gold in the plot line of both of them trying to find their way back to each other, but Jim being literally physically kept almost hostage, in a way, by Blackbeard was absolutely amazing. And then when they finally met, we got no big reunions. We got almost no acknowledgment of the fact that they had finally found peace with Olu before it was torn away. We got nothing but the "family who fucked" line to describe their connection with each other and spent more time with Zheng/Olu and Archie/Jim than with them.
Now, as an admitted fan of the possible poly Dynamics, there was a way to have made this work. In fact, with the exception of their being no big reunion where they talk even a bit about everything with each other, I felt like their plot line up until episode 6 was pretty decently well handled. The dynamic between the Olu/Jim/Archie was at its best during Calypso's birthday.
But then episode 7. And "family who fucked." And the idea that after spending months trying to get back to each other, Olu would be willing to just...walk away.
Though I have way more ethical issues with the way that the show handles abuse and trauma, from a writing point of view this is my biggest WTF of the season. Because you took some of the most well-developed characters from the First season, with the most potential, and just got rid of it? Especially when you had two amazing actors in those roles?
Djenks I am in your walls begging for answers and fanfic writers thank God for giving me some semblance of actual poly development (shout out to tragicallynerdy and aletterinthenameofsanity on ao3 for soothing some part of my soul)

Amy Pond canon-compliant character study (I will rip your heart out just like I did mine)
You are Amy Pond and your best friend is a man who tumbled into your life when you were a child and turned you into the town’s Cassandra, doomed to never be believed, doomed to believe without salvation, and yet your faith in has never wavered, because what would you be without him? You don't remember existing in a world without your god.
You are Amy Pond and you are kind and you have faith until that faith is forcefully broken to save your life. You become Lucy Pevensie, cast out of your kingdom by the only god you have ever believed in, so you choose to build your own kingdom, to make a life out of the wreckage that he left behind.
But that is not enough. It will never be enough. You are not allowed to leave this story. You are not allowed to grow up in a way that matters, because every time you try to choose, every time that you try to build a life of your own, you are dragged back into this story.
You are Amy Pond and this is a horror story, a tragedy, because you were never allowed to make a choice unless that choice is to die. You are not allowed to choose unless it is to kill yourself. You die on Appalappachia. You die in Manhattan. Any time you get to make a decision, death is there, hand outstretched, ready to walk you off the stage.
You are Amy Pond and you are a ghost haunting other people's stories.
You are Amy Pond and you died before you were born.
You are Amy Pond and you are kind even though the world was never kind to you and maybe, just maybe, this would have been a kinder story if you hadn't believed. If you hadn't held faith. If you had let the memory of your imaginary friend slide away.
The world might have ended earlier. The universe might have been worse off. But would you have? Would you have been happier?
The answer doesn't matter in the end. It never did.
Because there's nothing you can do. No other way this story ends.
You are Amy Pond and you do not get to leave. You do not get to change your story.
You are Amy Pond and you are Amelia Williams and you are Amelia Pond and your story ends as it began: with a girl sitting in a garden, waiting for a man to pick you up and take you to your death.
(Amy Pond and being trapped within the narrative: aka, the question of narrative framing and the consequences of faith.)

for the ask game - 2, 3, 23? (feel free to just pick any oc if you can't think of a villainous one lol)
From the Fic Ask Game:
Thank you for asking! I think I was supposed to pick one for each of these, but I love too many fics and I love talking about fics too much so I went overboard haha.
2. Terrible OC (In terms of, like, villains. We're being positive today!):
This is a hard one! I've always loved Sarah (@sarahsficarchive)'s OCs in Straight Camp. Most of them aren't really villains though. Other OCs I've loved include Jewls5's Donna Shacklebolt (also not a villain) in The Life and Times, and aletterinthenameofsanity's definitely not villainous OCs Claudia and Abraham in Noble Heart Such as Yours. I also loved how @unapologeticallyjaylos writes Maleficent in In Loco Parentis - Maleficent isn't an OC, but the fic is an AU so it's close enough.
3. Headcanon you've adopted from a writer:
Oh this is hard...pretty much the entirety of elecktrum's Sword and Shield Jewel and Song series has become my headcanon for the Pevensies in Narnia during the Golden Age, especially the inner workings of Cair Paravel. I've adopted the headcanon that Bobby "stole" Luke's songs because he signed a bad contract after Luke, Alex, and Reggie died and was trying to keep their legacy alive from @wr0temyway0ut's amazing fic My Name is Luke. I also stole the headcanon that Willie wanted to be an astronomer when he was alive from partyghost (Arokel)'s wonderful fic How Long Till My Soul Gets It Right.
23. An unfinished/updating fic that is totally worth the wait:
I can't pick one! A lot of my faves have been recently completed, but I'm currently obsessed with @waybeforeyourtime's And That’s How You Make History, Baby, @skateboardtotheheart's series It's Like A Multicolored Snapshot (Stuck in my Brain), @groenendaelfic's As Long As We Have Each Other, RubyIntyale's Wear Your Independence Like a Crown, and demeterfic's Hope Against Hope. Also @pysankywrites-updates's Paper Thin and their series Third Year Things. It hasn't been updated in a while, but I love @unapologeticallyjaylos's Mistaken for a Miracle as well.

if I wasn't such a coward I would run (but I was dying on the vine)
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/ye4Vqkb
by aletterinthenameofsanity
Kurt shouldn't cling to Blaine. He shouldn't clutch so tight. Blaine doesn't like Kurt's desires for intimacy outside of the bedroom. He never holds Kurt's hand in the hallways. He refuses to let Kurt where anything "flamboyant" to prom.
But Kurt knows that he will never get such tenderness from anyone else. Blaine might be a bit forceful, and a bit neglectful, but when he shines- well, when he serenades Kurt in glee, or dances with him in a Christmas special, or actually makes it to a scheduled makeout, it's worth it.
Because a boy likes Kurt. A boy likes him, and he might hurt him, but that's the price to pay. Kurt is not everyone's type, and those he is the type of are the kinds of boys who take.
So Kurt has to be the kind of boy that gives.
(But sometimes Kurt wonders how much he'll give in order to get Blaine to stay.
Sometimes Kurt hopes he'll know his own limits, that he'll be able to set his own boundaries. Other times, he knows that he'll keep giving until he has nothing else to give. Until he is a shell of the boy that proudly dressed in Gaga and drag and wore a kilt to prom.
Because what is he, if he is too much for anyone, if no one loves him?)

i am creation both haunted and holy
https://archiveofourown.org/works/47293894 by aletterinthenameofsanity There is a guilt that drips through Zuko's skin, permeating him down to his bones. He has felt the weight of it, of his shame, of his dishonor, of his failure, for as long as he can remember. It might have been tempered by his mother's presence, but never cleansed. Rescuing Appa evaporated a few drops. Turning his back on his father a few more. Volunteering to become Aang's firebending teacher even more so. But outright purging it? In the moments when Sokka makes him laugh, in the moments where Sokka returns from the market with some new bag and has Zuko fondly rolling his eyes, the shame dissolves.
