Bring & Buy at Tokyo Boom
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On November the 12th my local lolita community organised a bring & buy event and I was part of the working team! A bring & buy is a specialized kind of flea market: you drop off the things you want to sell with us (the lolita association) and we sell the items. There's a small fee (1€) for each item you drop off. At the end you collect your money for the sold items or get your items back (if they haven't sold). The small fee goes towards our association, we use it towards events.
I knew we were announcing our upcoming Teaparty at the bring & buy event (will be on June 8th 2024), which will be called "Royal Symphony of Roses". This highwaist-skirt of mine is called "The Empress' New Clothes" (after the fairy tale) and also has a lots of roses in it's print, so I decided to wear this skirt in honour of our upcoming teaparty!
I had lots of fun working at the b & b event and it also was a great success! The owners of Tokyo Boom (the restaurant) were also happy and we will hold further events there! ^_^
I bought two gorgeous headpieces for myself. The black one was an immediate must buy and I pondered a bit about buying the white one (because I have no similar black ones, but vaguely similar light-coloured ones), but then my friend offered me a discount and I couldn't resist any longer on the white one!
[id]Picture 1: A mirrored picture of Amy (me), posing in a chair in front of a big Daruma statue. Amy is a young, fat, white woman with glasses and long brown hair worn in two long braids. She's looking very relaxed and laid-back in this picture, as well as confident. She's leaning back in the chair and has her feet crossed over, which you can only see from the angle of her brown-and-gold accentuated boots. She's wearing a thrifted soft pink top and a soft pink cardigan with buttons over it on the top. The cardigan is tucked into her high waist rock, that's also very light in colour. The background colour of the skirt's fabric is off-white/beige and it's adorned with many flowers and portraits of vaguely regency looking women and men in uniform. There are also ships and letters scattered throughout the print. The print seems like a love story, set at sea. The skirt is finished with pale pink tulle lace with flowers on it. The grey tights don't totally match, but sometimes we have to work with what we have.
Picture 2 & 3: Two very similar close-up selfies of two friends: left is Amy (me) and right is my friend @bright-eyes-hope. My friend has an arm over my shoulder and we're both smiling at the camera.
Amy is a young, fat, white woman with glasses and long brown hair. She's wearing an off-white flower crown, further decorated with pink flowers. She's wearing a soft pink cardigan. My friend is a young, thing, white woman with glassed and short red hair in a kind of pixie cut. They're wearing a black bow in their hair and a black hoodie with cats on it.
Picture 4: A picture of the two lovely headpieces (black and white), that I bought at the bring & buy. Laying above them is the flower crown I wore for this event. The flower crown is offwhite and I further decorated it with single pink roses (to match the pink lace of my skirt). See picture 5 for a description of the black headpiece, as that one also shows it better/in clearer detail. The white headpiece is by Triple Fortune and features one big white bow with "Triple Fortune" written in gold, as well as multiple white roses and decorative pearls. Multiple asymmetric white veils drape down from the headpiece. The black and white headpieces are both so lovely!
Picture 5: A close-up of a lovely round headpiece by Atelier Pierrot. It's made from black lace, with black roses and black little satin ribbon bows around the rim. Some white pearls give the headpiece a bit of sparkle and further glamour.
Picture 6: The unmirrored original version of picture 1![/id]

Goth DIY: Altered Clothing part 2 (final part)
Part 1
This part will be shorter since we have less to cover. But it's still a long post, so I'm putting it under a cut.
Skirts and dresses! The last two dresses and green skirt took the most sewing, but the first dress was as simple as sewing studs on the neckline. The black velvet skirt was altered a bit more to fit me, as it was originally a skirt that had small pleats at the top that made the skirt cling to my stomach and flare out further down, which wasn't flattering on me, so I cut that part off and added a new waistband to get a circle miniskirt, then added lace trim to the hem for extra cuteness and a fancy touch.
Attaching skirts to a crop top is an easy way to make a dress if you don't want to sew one from scratch, but the waistlines did turn out a little wonky, so I use a belt or cardigan to hide that. I also sew a thin line of elastic onto the skirts to gather them before sewing them to the top to make it a little easier and to maintain stretch, since these dresses just pull on. I also don't hang them by the tops, but by draping them through a hanger to avoid stretching out the tops because the skirts are a little heavy (at least mine are, since I added so much to them).
For the green skirt, I added triangular inserts called "godets" to make the skirt flare out, since it was too tight before and didn't swish. I like a good swish.
The skirt with all the lace and pins and grommets and nonsense was one of my earlier projects, so it has three mistakes which I implore you to avoid. One: I didn't line the fabric loops up with the waistband very well, so they look crudely tacked-on. Two: I didn't add any fray check to the holes I made for the grommets, so they stretched out and the grommets are no longer attached to the fabric, just floating there on the ribbon. Three: I didn't stretch the skirt as I sewed on the lace, so now it doesn't stretch in that area; it still fits my waist, but I have to fight with it to get it over my hips. The design is still cute, but I would definitely do it better if I were to make it nowadays.
The half-and-half skirt only has a small alteration, which was actually to make it fit rather than to change how it looked. You see, sometimes you order something online in the same size you always wear from that brand, and sometimes that thing ends up running small and has no stretch. When that happens, when the skirt almost fits you and is just so close to buttoning all the way, get yourself a waistband extender. I made one, but you can also buy them. It's just a piece of elastic with a button on one side and a button hole on the other. Put that on, and BAM! The skirt (or pants) fit you. They won't quite zip up all the way, and it is a noticeable change, so I made a cute lace-covered patch to cover up that alteration so you can't tell I changed anything about it at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now onto the sweaters. I love wearing sweaters in winter, but there seems to be a shortage of goth ones. Nothing a few safety pins and lace trim can't handle! The first three only have safety pins added to them. The coffin ones were done the same way I did my sweatshirts, but this was before I knew about fusible interfacing for appliques, so they got a little wrinkled and don't look as nice. I have a better method now, as detailed in the post I linked. The fabrics were all Halloween fat quarters from Walmart, and I found a picture of a coffin on Google Images as a base to cut out the right shape.
All of these sweaters were thrifted except the two solid black ones with pins--the first one came from Walmart, and the second one was given to me by my mom. Sweaters are plentiful at thrift stores, and they don't even have to be black to be turned into something goth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's all of my altered clothing so far, unless there's anything I'm forgetting! Which there easily could be, because I shared about forty garments O-O
I'll share the jewelry I've made next, and then the clothes I've sewn from scratch! This will come sometime in the future, though, because it took awhile to find everything, take pictures of it, and then write about it. And between you and me, I've made a LOOOOOT of jewelry and clothing, so give me some time. As I said in the last post, feel free to message me if you want more detailed instructions or ideas. I'm always happy to help!
Stay crafty!

Modifying a sweatshirt into a cardigan (swardigan?)
Time for another knit garment modification 100% winging it!
You ever buy something at the thrift store and wonder: why someone would want to part with this, it's great?! And then you wear it a few times and...understand. You should not have passed judgement.
This "teddy" faux sherpa sweatshirt was cute but 100% polyester and as a top, wow SO sweaty. I was not wearing it, so it seemed fair game to try and edit into an open front cardigan/sweater layer instead.
It has no fasteners as I wanted this to be quick (and it was!). But if you do this, you could probably work a little slower and incorporate some loop & toggles like this. It's been working out fine as an open front thing to throw on, and I'm not a sweaty monster in it. Yay!
I forgot to take a "before" photo, but this is close enough. All I've done is carefully cut it right down the center front:
Tumblr media
I'm using what I had on hand; brown thread for the regular sewing machine, and I was not about to rethread my serger for an experiment, so you'll see later that the serged threads are black. It's fine!
I had some cheap black single-fold bias tape. That did well enough to line the inside of the cut edges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was a little bit of Stuff Happening around the bottom hem, but it didn't feel TOO thick to sew over, and it wasn't a problem. Here are the guts at the bottom hem:
Tumblr media
Le serged edge:
Tumblr media
With right sides together, and the top of the bias tape folded down twice to enclose the raw edge, sew it on thusly. This is from two different angles, before sewing that line and then afterward. Sorry if that's confusing!!:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then you neatly pull the bias tape over the edge and sew it down again. There are many videos out there that can explain this basic technique better than I can! This was even easier than that demo, because it's a straight line.
Tumblr media
There it is, now flipped to the inside. I'm pointing at the edge where you sew one more line all the way down. The serged edge is captured inside where the clips are.
Tumblr media
Bee-daa! Not fancy, but it does the job.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There, a sweaty-sweater-no-more!

Top 5 fall/winter wardrobe items.
my sense of fashion boils down to 1) it's comfortable and 2) it's cozy so like the real answer is whatever sweater or flannel i found at the thrift store? idk! i have a big burnt orange cardigan with pockets that i like a lot, and i'm excited to be able to wear my granddad's leather jacket again, and i love the look of a short-sleeved t-shirt over a long-sleeved t-shirt (reclaiming that elementary school kid in the 2000s look), and i have robin's button up shirt that she wore at lover's lake that i like to wear to pumpkin patches. this is probably not a satisfactory answer but i am an exceedingly simple woman when it comes to my wardrobe lmao

I had so much fun re-making the wardrobe for the new Monster High Movie that I decided to make on for Ever After High too - y'know, if Disney wouldn't sue every last penny out of Mattel if they did that (despite Descendants being a rip-off)...
I made this on the base of Ever After being in a more modern setting rather than the fused modern-fairy tale of the show, because... I'm not a costume designer xD
Raven Queen
Tumblr media
I love Raven's original design, but I don't think the skirt would translate well into live-action. I chose purple leather pants instead and gave her a leather jacket - if it had winged beading down the sleeves, it would be *chef's kiss*!
The chain at the top right is a hip chain, I think that'd look really good with the pants (who I'd like to be high waisted) and the shirt (which took me forever to find!). I liked the dramatic boots and the almost Victorian necklace, I think it merges edgy and vintage really well!
For the hair, I wanted a more transitional color rather than the stripes - because that's how we get Descendants wigs. Do you want more Descendants wigs?? Didn't think so...
Apple White
Tumblr media
This is probably my favourite of them all! I made Apple more preppy, like the overly-cheery class president she actually is. Her style is practical, sweet, and high class - I especially love the bow for her neck, I think it'd look adorable with a puff-sleeved white shirt! All in all, I just really like this outfit, I think it'd be a great way to transition her into live-action!
Maddie Hatter
Tumblr media
For Maddie, I went in a more bubble-gym style. I did consider Lolita, but that seemed almost too sweet and matching for the daughter of the mad hatter - also, it gave me too much Alice vibes...
I tried to keep the base colours, but I also simplified them. I think Maddie in her cartoon outfit would look way too cartoony in a real setting, instead of quirky and odd. I'd like this to be her "bade outfit", and then I'd let a costume designer and the actress loose in a thrift shop to weird-ify it as much as possible!
Briar Beauty
Tumblr media
I made Briar's outfit a bit more Victorian-inspired than her real one, because this is the outfit I think would look the worst in a live-action movie. A short, rose-patterned skirt and a laced crop top would suit her so well!
I gave her flats so she can run to all the parties she wants, and her hair is a lot more blended, though noticeably pink. IDK, I really like this outfit, though I think she'd look awesome with some rose-patterned pants too!
I liked the idea of the glasses being prescription and not sunglasses. I also think she'd kind of hat her tiara, seeing it as a sign of the inevitable...
Cerise Hood
Tumblr media
Cerise is one of my favourite characters, if not the favourite. I liked her edgy cartoon-look, but I wanted to make it even more grunge and rough.
A hooded leather jacket (of course) and some big, baggy, ripped jeans would be such a cool look on her! The flat boots would be easier to run in, and I really like the idea of her with shorter, more manageable hair. Also, chains. Because of course.
Ashlynn Ella
Tumblr media
Surprisingly, this was the easiest look to make! I think Ashlynn would be so pretty in a simple, blue floral dress with a pink cardigan and light blonde beachy curls! I also can't get over how good these shoes look (obviously an actual actor couldn't wear real glass stilettos)!
Also, can we take a moment to appreciate that clock purse? Look me in the eyes and tell me this outfit wouldn't 100% be Ashlynn!

How I keep looking gothglam on a budget.
Hairdye:
I've been dying my hair different colors for years and it took a toll on my hair. Now I just dye my hair with semi permanent. I found a combo that works for me. I buy my dye from highness.co.nz
Makeup:
I keep my makeup simple these days, I use a tinted moisturizer by Nars with Inika primer under, set by a Bare Minerals loose powder and topped off with Nars liquid blush in Dolce Vita. I use a little bit of Deadly Sins liquid liner and a lashing of Urban Decay Perversion mascara. Tiny bit of ABH brow pomade and set with Rare Beauty setting spray. TOPPED off with my staple lipstick Instigator by Mac.
Nails:
I cannot skimp on the nails. I do my own using kmart tips! That's right, the plastic $4 clear tips are super durable and sturdy. I've used a lot of expensive ones in my time and these are really among the best. I use Gelous.co gel polish to paint my stiletto nails and boom, nobody can tell the difference. My go to colors from gelous are vampy purple and drop of poison.
Clothes:
I wear my Doc Marten Chelsea Boots to death, also my Jadons on occasion. I buy majority from Dangerfield when it comes to dresses and skirts. I also love their cotton cardigans and oversized tees. But they are getting crazy expensive. Mightyape has Killstar cheaper so I'll buy their dresses, hoodies etc.
Bamboo black socks, quality lingerie you can't go wrong.
Homeware:
I love victorian and vintage decor, I love to thrift my items and mix and match. I collect Ghosts so I'm always on the look out for a cute ghost. Anything dark floral, dark teal and purple, I love gem tones. I especially adore Killstars homeware collection. For art I will usually purchase friends photography or art.

Winter is coming.. but eventually summer returns too! Here's a throwback to a summer fit I wore in August this year. I've thrifted the dark raspberry pink skirt with the floral print and immediately knew how I wanted to style it as a dress. Here you can see how I did it for the first wear!
Outfit rundown:
a sleeveless raspberry pink top,
the dark raspberry pink skirt-worn-as-a-dress on top,
a patchwork skirt as an additional layer worn underneath the skirt-dress
and a dark green crocheted sleeveless cardigan/vest with a hood worn on top.
For accessories I'm wearing a simple knotted necklace with a pentagram charm, a big felted leaf hair accessory as a brooch on top of the skirt-dress and a flower in my hair (on top of my braid, so you can't see it in the forwards facing pictures).
I really like interesting geometrical pattern the sun has painted on the ground in the picture and how the mirroring function has highlighted the sun pattern even more!
Picture 1: A mirrored picture of Amy (me): a young, white, fat woman with long brown hair (worn in one thick braid over her shoulder) and glasses. She's wearing a sleeveless raspberry pink top, with a dark raspberry pink skirt-worn-as-a-dress on top, a patchwork skirt as an additional layer worn underneath the skirt-dress and a dark green crocheted sleeveless cardigan/vest with a hood worn on top of all that. Black strapped sandals finish the summer outfit!
Picture 2: A close-up image of the outfit. Zoomed in the floral print of the dark raspberry pink skirt-dress is nicely visible. You can even recognise the sequins stitched onto the flowers. Equally, you can see the colour change on the felt leaf: it's a mixed green-into-blue colour with iridescent beads embroidered on! My braid looks very soft in this picture (it is!) and gets highlights from the sun. The pentagram charm necklace is also shown close-up in this picture, as well as the dark green crocheted vest. The vest looks almost black close-up in this light! [/image description]

Amber - what's something you do every day?
Blankets - sweaters or fuzzy blankets?
Camping - do you like s'mores?
Cardigans - favorite autumn colors?
Costume - do you like to dress up for Halloween? Do you have a go to costume?
Cozy - describe your ideal fall day.
Fresh Air - what's something you're thankful right now?
Frost- anything you're looking forward to?
Giving - do like giving or receiving gifts more?
Handmade - do you like making presents?
Harvest - do you like going to autumn festivals?
Hearth - ideal home?
Intricate - what's a subject you have random knowledge about?
Joking - favorite silly joke?
Oven - what's your favorite holiday thing to bake?
Pie - what's your favorite type of pie?
Pinecone - are you crafty?
Rain - favorite type of weather?
Sweaters - what's your go to fall outfit?
Ahhhh thank you!! sorry this took forever!!
Amber - what's something you do every day? tbh I am still doing wordle daily!
Blankets - sweaters or fuzzy blankets? ooooh both?? I love wearing sweaters so much though, and living where it gets cold now makes putting together outfits much more fun. but i love my fuzzy tolkien blanket too <3
Camping - do you like s'mores? YES
Cardigans - favorite autumn colors? shades of brown are my fav, and a more subtle orange like your blog background - last year after fall I had a great thrift find of a super cheap Land's End cardigan in about that color and I'm excited to wear it more this year!
Costume - do you like to dress up for Halloween? Do you have a go to costume? I love dressing up! I have a Jedi costume I made several years ago that I've worn multiple times
Cozy - describe your ideal fall day. a book with a cup of pumpkin spice tea, a trail walk with the leaves turning, maybe silly halloween music at night (thanks for asking, I should try to remember these things)
Fresh Air - what's something you're thankful right now? my dad is recovering well after his final chemo treatment (the previous one was rough but this time was way better and now we are DONE)
Frost- anything you're looking forward to? hmm reading the rest of Dracula and preparing Advent music come to mind!
Giving - do like giving or receiving gifts more? probably giving, though tbh both can stress me out haha
Handmade - do you like making presents? Yes! I like sewing little things
Harvest - do you like going to autumn festivals? I'm not sure I've been to anything that qualifies exactly, will have to try something one day!
Hearth - ideal home? historic, cozy in aesthetic and size, white lace curtains in the kitchen, a place for making music, organized/easy to clean
Intricate - what's a subject you have random knowledge about? Sentences for crimes tried at the Old Bailey courthouse in London during the late 19th century. For fandom and fanfic haha
Joking - favorite silly joke? My one thought is the meme format that's like "so when X does Y it's ""Z"", but when I..."
Oven - what's your favorite holiday thing to bake? I enjoy making pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving - I make an egg-free one which is really easy because you bake the empty crust, and then mix the pumpkin/milk/sugar/spices with gelatin and let it set in the fridge. It's good!
Pie - what's your favorite type of pie? Mmmm probably apple, but pumpkin is next. Had a really good peach pie too once, would like to try that again.
Pinecone - are you crafty? yes, there's nothing that I'm particularly skilled at but I like to try things! I'm best at sewing
Rain - favorite type of weather? a no-wind snowfall <3 <3 <3 <3
Sweaters - what's your go to fall outfit? still figuring this out as I adjust to the weather/change in seasons here! but I've done a lot of dress/cardigan/leggings, and this year definitely going to use the aforementioned cardigan a lot, my brown maxi skirt, and a tan cowl necked top I keep forgetting about

Cosplay Diary -- [Intro to costumes!]
Eight (Splatoon)
Shoes: Black Heels fitted with insoles to account for me never wearing heels. I've purchased two black zippers and some grommits to add superficially for the sake of design matching. (Who has a front facing shoe zipper??) Leggings: Eight doesn't canonically have leggings, but I'm hoping to do some for the costume, translucent ones splattered with ink/paint! I've got leggings, I've got paint, but I haven't painted anything yet Skirt: I've pinned it in further with safety pins to get a tighter fit, and plan on sewing over the fold I've made to adjust the fit (if it'll fit under my machine...). I'd also like to hem it slightly, since Eight's skirt is pretty short. Jacket: Bit big on me, and the zips too centered, but it works. Need to cut off the sleeve and cut and hem the bottom edge without murdering the existing zipper. Wig: So I've never done a tentacle wig before, but my plan is simple. I will construct 4 plush tentacles to be mounted onto an old baseball cap I found and will chop the brim off of. (That's what the bedsheets are for)
Notes: Lots to do on Eight, but a lot of the planning is done so it's mainly getting to sit down and do it. My next step is to sew the skirt and finish it up, then work on the jacket, then wig. I've done a prototype tentacle for the wig and it went well, so I'll be making another with the proper fabrics, to check sizing, then get started on that.
Dot (Pokemon)
Slippers: Managed to get those today! I'll be adding the decorative stuff to make them snorlax themed, and hopefully adding a band around the back as well. Sweatpants: A wonderful find at the thrift store! (Actually, everything here is from the thrift store for the most part. The slippers, and leggings are the only exceptions, from a walmart and dollar store respectively.) Tank Top: I love thrift store. Cardigan: The real meat of this costume, an entirely handknit cardigan. while the pattern isn't perfectly Dots, please forgive me because I've never knit a cardigan before. Actually I've only ever knit scarves, and its been a few years. I've done all body panels and one sleeve, leaving only the second sleeve and the collar trim left for the body of the cardigan. I'd also like to add pockets. Dot's cardigan has a hood, which I won't be priotizing for now (mainly because i do not know how to do that and I'm short for time.), but i've got a pair of really fuzzy socks I plan on using to make the puff balls. I'll be giving them buttons, so they'll be able to be detatched for ease of washing. (Hopefully I can do the same for the tail?) Wig: A dear friend has pledged to mail me a purple wig I'm hoping to use for this, we'll see if the post is good on getting it to me in time. the only thing I really still need to get for these costumes is the pink extensions I'll use for her highlights. I plan on doing her hair back style (because I need. to see.), and have a hairband. I'll probably use glue and hairspray to make flicked back hair I can then clip in and secure to the base wig for the bangs.... That's the plan anyway.
Notes: A lot closer to finished with Dot, big thanks to prexisting clothes from thrift stores. Which is great because I don't wanna make normal sweatpants n tank tops and things! Cardigan knitting has been going well, and I hope to finish the second sleeve Soon. It's been a long while knitting this, but I'm nearly there! Not super experienced with wig work, but hey this cosplays for fun not a contest so I don't wanna sweat it too much.
Feelings pretty good about things right now! If progress is made faster than expected, I might do a third costume, but we'll see. Haven't figured out which I'm wearing what day yet...

to be butch is to be loved
my first butch experience;
i was twelve years old.
it was my birthday, at that.
i was wearing a flowy pink dress
adorned with embroidered flowers
and my blonde hair framed my shoulders.
i fixed my curls and tied it back,
rolling up the sleeves of my cardigan
as the oil from my stepdad's car
stained my pale calloused fingers.
despite this girly little appearance,
this was the day that i truly realised
i wanna be a butch when i grow up.
my most recent butch experience;
i'm getting old (for a teenage girl, anyway).
i was wearing levi's men's jeans
and a thrifted black LA tank top
and my freshly-dyed black hair
curled around my face and neck.
despite this roughened appearance,
this was one of the days i realised
i can be a butch and feel things.
it isn't all about maintaining a persona.
