Autistic April Day 27:Self Care
I usually practice self care by allowing myself to rest sometimes when I am feeling burnt out. I usually play Animal crossing or watch videos on my phone.
Sometimes I watch cartoons on TV. I remember once I was in a bad mood and I watched the Simpsons non shop and that helped me feel alot more better. Another time I was having a Meltdown and my brother put Bluey on the TV for me and that took me out of my Meltdown. I feel like cartoons are more easier to watch when I am not feeling to well because they are more visually stimulating.
The other day I bought some powder that can go into bath water and turn into slime. Bathing in slime sounds nice so next time I am having a bad day I will use it.
Image Descriptions:
1: This is a photo I took of the box that has the powder in it to make the slime. The box is small and rectangular. It has text on it that is in various colours and sizes. The text says "gelli baff turns water into goo and back again. New colour changing crazy oranges to bizarre green. Bathe in magic goo!" There is a cartoon picture of a white boy with brown hair on the box. He has his arms in the air like he's cheering. He has a white towel wrapped around his waist. Infront of him is a white bath tub with orange and green slime in it.
2: There are a list of prompts for each day of the month for Autistic April. The top and bottom of the image is light purple and the middle part of the image is white with black text on it. The black text says "Autistic April 2024 Prompts: 1: Special interests 2: How you found out you were Autistic 3: your favourite stim 4: alternative forms of communication 5: your favourite fidget toys 6: textures you hate 7: safe foods 8: other disabilities you have 9: LBGTQI+ 10: childhood special interests11: comfort items 12: your favourite Autistic celebrities or characters13: unmasking 14: sensory aids 15: misdiagnosis 16: Autism friendly places 17: Disability support you have received 18: animals 19: favourite thing about being Autistic 20: echolalia 21: idenity first or Person first language 22: the spoon theory

most recent entry by the time i started this blog
april 4th, 2024
early morning
cw: descriptions of gory imagery/deceased+ mutilated corpse, car crash
read with caution as this is FUCKING with my brain rn
i woke up shortly after i dreamt this. my face did not reflect what i felt - internally i felt dispair.
i tried not to cry and i didn't. i couldn't bring myself to - i was so confused and scared.
let's start off with what i vaguely remember of the beginning
i don't remember what me and my brother were doing beforehand. it seemed very vague, it didn't happen, or i don't remember. i know something did happen, but it was entirely different dream. it's like when you're watching a rated-for-kids show airing on live tv and then there's a tv hijack.
i vaguely remember it as a scooby-doo style episode with my friends where we just escape a building, nothing too major.
after that it gets weird. my nightmares seem to follow this pattern of being normal at first, then (i'll say very cleverly and smoothly), transitioning to a bad dream.
it starts out as me marching out to my houses front, standing on top of the steps near my driveway. i was asking my brother to go throw out a box that was on the curb and he was refusing. this resulted in frustration from me and i yelled and screamed for him to. he got very angry and picked up the box, and got in this random mail service van (i don't know what they're actually called, sorry. it looked like a ups van but more short and stout, length and height wise. it was white too!)
he drove the car into the open back of the same van, not with too much speed that it's a crash, just like pushing in. the van in front is pushed too hard by the one behind and rolls down the street, doing god knows what
the van my brother's in is being driven by him, not the one that rolled down.
he drives forward for a few seconds smoothly, then pulls over sorts and starts losing control of the car. while this happened i was pleading for him to get out of the vehicle
the climax is after this
an orange car is on a street that he could turn right to if he wanted - my brother drove very fast forward towards the car and hit it violently, his car bursting into two and the front of the other one getting completely fucked up.
at first i thought it was my dads car, but remembering that the car was orange denied my suspicions
the ambulance and fire department had came almost in a flash, and my brother was surprisingly not injured nor had a scratch him despite the van he was in split into two, and the half he was in and flipped in the air a few feet forward of the crash.
the driver of the other car was the actual thing that sent genuine fear through me - not only the way he looked, but what happened just a few seconds after
the driver was completely mutilated - for 2 seconds or so he was still connected to his lower half by ribs and bones, so keep in mind that severely torn flesh and bones were seen for a split moment.
he had been decapitated and he had been separated from his lower half, the parting being a little under his chest. blood was coming out of the neck (moreso the part where his head was cut off) like a water hose, and from his lower half too.
he charged a little towards me because his intestines/organs, as well his legs were next to me, but then from the chest down his body turned into like, a wire skeleton people use for clay figures. then he started melting before my very eyes - every part of him melted, there was blood spilling everywhere, and two people with headsets (ones used on film sets) with light blue shirts and jeans came in and carried the wired skeleton (again, thing people use to model clay figures) away. everything reveals itself to be part of a movie set and none of it was real at all, for only 3 seconds. my dream ends there.

Y'all remember this drawing I made almost 3 years ago? I decided to redraw it! I honestly prefer this one more, but... hey, it's still stupid.
Some changes:
Panel 1 - The Newscast is no longer on an obvious holoscreen, but is just a box in a void. Two of the figures in the background are different - Marina is replaced with Zori (Zoroark OC) and Cecillia is replaced with Alrani (Genshin Oni OC). Kress is now standing in front of Zori. Kau's coat is now covering most of his shell. The Newscaster Microphone says "BALLZ FML" instead of ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). It now says "Live" and "Breaking News" at the top. A Canada Flag has been added to some white space. The text was adjusted from "Currently, there is a moron attempting to climb the pole."
Panel 2 - Vic's top is now her workout shirt instead of a non-specific crop top. Seven is wearing his work clothes, including a lab coat and armband with the symbol used for the Chosen/Elders in XCOM2. Theo's hair is messier, and his glasses are the right colour. Alpha's hair is messier. Mona's hair has more volume, and her magic eye is side-eyeing the TV. Theo's text is now above, while the TV's text is below. Theo's text was changed from "Man, there are reckless morons out this early?" and the TV's from "They've managed to climb about five or six storeys up already."
Panel 3 - The "Live" and "Breaking News" text carries over, now replaced with "Fuck" and "Breaking Wind". Ender's text has changed from "Hey!"
Panel 4 - Vic still has her mouth full and has just stopped in place, instead of inexplicably no longer eating cereal. Seven has proper eyes, and his spit take is slightly more dramatic. Theo looks more shocked, and his hair is still a mess. Alpha's face looks less pissed off and more surprised, and his sweater is easier to make out - hair's still a mess. Mona's expression has been adjusted to be more confused, and her magic eye looks confused/shocked with her. Theo's words have been slightly changed from "Shit, that's our moron."
The original had very out-of-character text for all involved, and redoing it was just for fun, also to compare the art from 3 years ago to now!

'“Oppenheimer” reigned at the 81st Golden Globe Awards on Sunday just as it once loomed large at the summer box office. The sprawling examination of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb racked up five wins, the most of any movie, including the prize for best motion picture drama...
“Oppenheimer’s” Christopher Nolan, who leveraged his success making blockbusters like “The Dark Knight” and “Inception” to get Universal to produce an $100 million drama about a physicist, won best director. Cillian Murphy, who played the brooding scientist at the center of the film, was named best actor in a drama. The film also was honored for its atmospheric score...
Comedian Jo Koy hosted the show and peppered his opening monologue with jokes about Robert De Niro having a kid at 80, Barry Keoghan’s full-frontal nudity in “Saltburn” and the 3-hour runtime of “Oppenheimer.” “My new year’s resolution for 2024 is to finish ‘Oppenheimer’ in 2025,” Koy said. “Seriously! I’m almost there! I loved ‘Oppenheimer.’ Especially the first season.”...
There were plenty of surprises among the evening’s prizewinners, including “Anatomy of a Fall’s” best screenplay victory over “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer"...'

Weekend Top Ten #618
Top Ten Things 2023
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but another year has been and gone. Now we’re in the far-flung future of 2024; that’s after Blade Runner but before Demolition Man, if you’re keeping score.
Anyway, looking back, it was a funny old year. I managed to score the longest-term contract I’ve ever had since going freelance, which was nice. One of my kids went to secondary school. There were a bunch of wars. But what about pop-culturally? Because this is the point when I list my favourite things that happened that weren’t, you know, actually serious or important.
Even looking at “arts and entertainment”, it was still a bit of a weird year. In terms of film and TV, the various strikes hugely impacted everything, grinding productions to a halt, disrupting release schedules, and really having an almost Covid-like influence on the next couple of years. And even at the cinema, there was an almost-universal downswing in box office, surprising many and leading to tons of films – from Mission: Impossible to Indiana Jones to almost every superhero movie – underperforming; the counterpoint, of course, was Barbenheimer, of which more later.
In videogames, there were a ton of future classics – almost all of which I didn’t play – marking 2023 out as a potential banner year alongside, say, 2007 (Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, Portal, etc). However, the whole industry was rocked by repeated mass layoffs, making it hard to celebrate.
But – hey! – there genuinely was a lot of cool stuff. I do feel a bit weird that some of the things I was really looking forward to – the new series of Ghosts, the Transformers reboot – I still haven’t gotten around to checking out yet (but my comics are on their way!). So with no further ado other than a belated “Happy New Year”, here are my favourite (non-important, non-real-life) things that happened in 2023.
Tune in next time, when despite the year being about one-twenty-fourth over already, I highlight what I’m looking forward to in 2024!
Tumblr media
Doctor Who Returns to Glory: I don’t want to get too down on the Chibnall era, but it’s fair to say that my love for Doctor Who had waned somewhat in recent years. However, it returned to form in a huge, huge fashion, once more under the stewardship of Russel T. Davies. The three-part anniversary specials, with David Tennant and Catherine Tate unleashing their amazing chemistry again, were a delight; then we got the effortlessly cool Fifteenth Doctor in the form of Ncuti Gatwa. The Christmas special was as fast-paced and charming as you’d expect. I don’t think I’ve been this excited about TV in a long time, and it was absolutely the best thing all year.
Barbenheimer: I spoke briefly about the disappointing box office this year, but two films that bucked the trend were Barbie and Oppenheimer. The second of these films is a dark, introspective, mesmerising look at a man and a moment in history; it’s terrific but I think we were already expecting something very good from Nolan, so it wasn’t so much of a surprise. Barbie, on the other hand, was a revelation, not just funny and light but also incredibly deep and thoughtful and about stuff. Plus it had one of the performances of the year and a terrific musical number. Together these films lifted each other up, becoming a zeitgeist juggernaut and just demolishing the competition. And they’re both great! Really, really great!
Things That Technically Came Out in 2023: when talking about films, though, my favourite is the exquisitely beautiful and magisterially produced The Fabelmans. It’s not just a heartbreaking introspection on one family falling apart despite there being a lot of love around, but it’s also in its own way a love letter to cinema and a deconstruction of the artist. And it has my favourite final shot of, well, maybe any film I’ve ever seen. Now, this film actually came out in 2022 in America, but we got it in 2023, so it counts. Similarly, on TV, the incredibly good – funny and heartfelt – Our Flag Means Death was a delayed arrival on these shores. So three cheers for things that still, technically, came out this year!
Great Gaming Remakes: end-of-year gaming lists are going to be wanging on about Baldur’s Gate 3 or Tears of the Kingdom or something. However, I can’t deny that for me the gaming highlights were expertly re-released old games. GoldenEye 007 finally – finally! – made its way onto modern consoles, and remains a masterpiece. And then Quake II arrived in one of the most impressive remasterings I’ve ever seen, with options galore to fiddle and tweak. Both of these games retain their excellent gameplay and have manged to still look good despite the passage of time. Also a shout-out to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition which made its way to the Xbox this year, and is also great.
The Underdog MCU: if you were to read almost anything about the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year, it would be about how it’s a busted flush, on the way out, and how everyone is overcome with superhero fatigue. Now, for a start, I don’t think superhero fatigue is a problem; almost every mainstream, big-budget blockbuster suffered this year. But the MCU was the big dog so to see, say, The Marvels return a frankly shocking box office would naturally generate headlines. Despite this, though, I think Marvel had a really good year. Quantumania was a fun adventure movie whose biggest failing was that it tried to be too different from the low-key films that preceded it; The Marvels was a frankly excellent buddy-movie with some inventive action and three great leads; Loki provided the best finale Marvel has done and might be their best work on TV; and Guardians Vol. 3 is just a mini masterpiece. Yes, Secret Invasion was catastrophically disappointing, but I’m really happy with the overall quality at the moment.
A Great Year for Animation: it really was another terrific year for animated movies. Elemental – another alleged box office disappointment – was a tender and attractive romcom, even if it didn’t set the world on fire. Puss-in-Boots: The Last Wish was gorgeous and hilarious and really a lot better than it needed to be. Across the Spider-Verse added a healthy dollop of maturity and complexity to the gonzo wackiness of the first film. And there were loads of cool films dropping on streaming too. This is just the tip of the animated iceberg! It was a great year!
Happy Birthday Disney: speaking of animation, Disney celebrated their 100th birthday. It was quite nice following along and seeing the little teases and releases. The highlight was the new short film, Once Upon a Studio, which was hagiographic and back-slappy but also a nerd’s delight, spotting tiny cameos and in-jokes. It culminated in Wish which – I’m gonna be honest – I’ve not seen yet, but it’s still really nice how they built a big animated movie around aspects of their cultural history.
Microsoft and Activision Providing Drama: I’m not sure how much we should celebrate an enormous company hoovering up another enormous company, but the ongoing saga of Microsoft-Activision-Blizzard dominated gaming discourse across the year. It feels like this saga has been rumbling on forever, and it had enough twists, turns, roadbumps, and 180s to fill a streaming drama series. Ultimately it landed where I think most of us expected – with Microsoft now owning one of the largest publishers on the planet, albeit with a few interesting concessions. I’m not too fussed about getting Call of Duty on Game Pass, but I do hope the acquisition will allow for a healthier workplace culture at Activision, as well as more variety in the games they produce.
The Beatles Released a New Song: I’m gonna keep this one very simple, but in a year dominated by pop music – I mean, let’s be honest, it was really the year of Taylor Swift, even if the song that stuck around my brain the longest was Bad Idea Right? by Olivia Rodrigo – but The Beatles released a new song. The Beatles! A new song! Kinda! All, like, high-tech and cut up and smoothed out, with a video by Peter Jackson! I mean, really.
A Great Year for Indie Games: so yes, finally, I talk about new games – ones I played, too! Because for all the huge, Starfield stuff that dominated headlines, for me the best games were probably the much smaller ones. This is one of the things I love about Game Pass; trying out these littler titles that I don’t know I’d have rolled the dice on otherwise. So we have Venba, Cocoon, Thirsty Suitors, Sea of Stars, Jusant… all terrific, idiosyncratic titles without mega-budgets. Also quick shout-out to Star Trek: Resurgence, which won’t set the world on fire but does feel like you’re playing an episode of The Next Generation.

One of the more amusing TikToks that followed the announcement of the forthcoming Legend of Zelda movie riffs on a scene from the animated series Drawn Together. In it, the blue-caped Captain Hero sits in a wheelchair at the bottom of a staircase next to the text “Zelda fans when the movie was announced.” One beat later, the words “it’s live action” appear, and Captain Hero screams. Another beat, then “it’s produced by Avi Arad (Morbius)” flashes up, this time to a louder scream. Finally, “It was written by the writer of Batman v Superman, Rise of Skywalker, and Jurassic Worlld [sic],” and Captain Hero unleashes one last wounded wail.
Even with the slight mistake—the movie's screenwriter, Derek Connolly, did contribute to Jurassic World and Star Wars: Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalker but didn’t have anything to do with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice—historically, you’d have been naive to bet against this wisdom. Video game adaptations have a rough track record. Yet 2023 saw the release of one critically acclaimed video game adaptation, The Last of Us, which received two dozen Emmy nominations, and one obscenely profitable one, The Super Mario Bros Movie, which made more than a billion dollars worldwide last spring. Even more obscure titles, like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Twisted Metal, made reasonable waves.
This upturn in the fortunes of video game adaptations has coincided with a perceived downturn for comics-based fare. After 15 years of dominance, “superhero fatigue” is now a pervasive talking point. Is there a new hegemon in Hollywood? That might be premature, but 2023 hinted at a future realignment in audience appetites.
For those invested in superheroes’ downfall, the numbers are encouraging. Warner Bros. and DC’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Blue Beetle and, most notoriously, The Flash all bombed, with the latter making just $55 million in North America in its opening weekend, way below projections. For Disney, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania started strongly, then interest cratered, becoming one of the few Marvel films that failed to break even. The Marvels, which cost Disney north of $300 million to make and promote, brought in just $47 million at the domestic box office on its opening weekend, the lowest of any of the MCU’s 33 movies.
Even Bob Iger, the Disney CEO who ultimately signs the Marvel checks, seems at least a little fed up. In June, Iger admitted that oversaturation of Marvel projects, particularly TV shows, had hurt interest in superhero offerings. He weighed in again in late November, admitting that Disney had made too many sequels. Some superheroes—the Batmen, the Spider-Men—should never be counted out, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 brought in $118 million domestically when it opened, but Disney had no billion-dollar releases in 2023. Compare that to eight prior to 2020 (minus Sony’s Spider-Man movies), and then consider that The Super Mario Bros. Movie beat every superhero movie released in 2023, and it’s easy to see Hollywood swerving away from at least some of the more obscure superhero outings in the future.
Super Mario Bros. wasn’t this year's biggest movie—that title goes to Barbie. But from 2010 to 2020, the top 10 movies in North America in any given year were dominated by comic-book heroes. The only video game adaptation to join their ranks was Sonic the Hedgehog, which came out in February 2020, right before Covid-19 closed many theaters and transformed moviegoing habits.
Mario’s success will lead to a “deluge” of video game adaptations, argues Joost van Druenen, a New York University business professor and author of One Up: Creativity, Competition, and the Global Business of Video Games. Van Dreunen reckons that superheroes are “going the way of the cowboy,” referring to the shifts in Hollywood’s dominant genres (think: the rise of zombies a few years back, all the Home Alone-esque family movies in the 1990s). Even a show like The Boys, he argues, with its anti-superheroes, looks like a kind of turning point, akin to the revisionist Westerns, exemplified by Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch, that began to dominate the genre at the end of the ’60s and into the ’70s.
Provided audiences are as tired of superheroes as pundits think, video game protagonists could profitably fill the gap. They come from well-known franchises and have large, engaged fan bases—two things studios appreciate. Cast your eyes down the development list: God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Assassin’s Creed, continued expansion on The Witcher, among others. Nintendo, which has traditionally resisted film spinoffs, is planning a movie a year; Arcane, widely considered the first title (before The Last of Us) to break the curse of such adaptations, is finally getting a second season. Amazon’s forthcoming Fallout series is being helmed by the same team as Westworld.
“Video game content is now appealing to filmmakers, unlike ever before,” says van Dreunen. “So that’s coming in at the same time the superhero movies are starting to reach their tail end.” Of course, these are not sure things: Gran Turismo’s performance was decidedly average, and it’d be fair to question whether any game character can compete with Mario’s star power. Looking into next year, Fallout will be an early litmus. If it finds a foothold upon release in April, that’ll be the surest sign yet that pop culture is entering its video game adaptation era.
Back to superheroes, artist fatigue is one under-explored factor. Inspiration is lacking. Some are undoubtedly tired of the whole enterprise, but many are just tired of poor films: And clearly, these two factors entwine. “I think it’s the quality of the movie, more so than the superheroes themselves,” says Mark Caplan, who worked in video game licensing for Sony Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox and worked on the three Spider-Man games of the Tobey Maguire era. “Superheroes have always found an audience, whether it’s through paper or through film, television—and it will continue.”
The film critic Richard Brody captured this general listlessness in his lukewarm review of The Marvels. Brody blames copyright restrictions: If artists outside of the multinationals could reimagine superheroes, “fatigue” talk would be moot; that world, unfortunately, is many years away. “What happened to superhero movies?” Brody writes. “How did a genre rooted in astonishment, weirdness, and wonder become a byword for the normative, the familiar, and the mundane?” That’s the astonishment, weirdness, and wonder that game adaptations need to recapture.

NASA's Perseverance Rover Will Look at Mars Through These 'Eyes' When it launches this summer, NASA's Perseverance rover will have the most advanced pair of "eyes" ever sent to the Red Planet's surface: Its Mastcam-Z instrument packs a next-gen zoom capability that will help the mission make 3D imagery more easily. Rover operators, who carefully plan out each driving route and each movement of a rover's robotic arm, view these stereo images through 3D goggles to see the contours of the landscape. Located on Perseverance's "head," Mastcam-Z (the Z stands for "zoom") is a more advanced version of Mastcam, which NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has relied on to produce gorgeous panoramas of the Martian landscape. But it does more than that, and so will Mastcam-Z: Along with producing images that enable the public to follow the rover's daily discoveries, the cameras provide key data to help engineers navigate and scientists choose interesting rocks to study. The difference is that Curiosity's Mastcam can't zoom. Zoom With a View Curiosity's Mastcam was initially designed to be zoomable, but that proved difficult to achieve at the time in such a small instrument (Curiosity launched in 2011). "The original plan was for Curiosity to have a zoom camera that could go out to an extreme wide angle like a spaghetti western view," said Jim Bell of Arizona State University, Mastcam-Z's principal investigator and Mastcam's deputy principal investigator. "It would have been an amazing panoramic perspective but proved really hard to build at the time." Instead, Curiosity's Mastcam has one telephoto lens and one wide-angle lens. Images are taken through each and can be combined to produce stereo views. But the wide-angle lens takes in far more of the landscape in a single shot than the telescopic one; it requires up to nine telescopic images to match. Perseverance's Mastcam-Z simplifies matters, zooming both lenses until they match and can be used to make a single 3D image. This is both easier and requires sending fewer images - and less data - to Earth. Eyes of a Scientist Besides providing a stereo view to help drivers choose the safest path, Mastcam-Z will help geologists choose scientific targets and better understand the landscape that rock samples are found in: Did they fall from a neighboring cliffside? Are they from an ancient stream? Mastcam-Z will provide "superhuman vision," viewing the landscape in a variety of colors (wavelengths of light), including some that can't be detected by the human eye. Scanning the terrain in the ultraviolet or infrared, for example, could reveal metal meteorites dotting the surface or color variations indicating compositions that warrant more detailed analysis by other instruments. Mastcam-Z isn't a spectrometer, which is to say, an instrument that uses light to do detailed scientific analysis. "But it can provide mineral clues that other instruments will follow up on," Bell said. The camera system can also observe the Sun and sky, watching for transits of Mars' moons across the Sun and measuring how dust storms and cloud formations change over the seasons. Mars for the People Bell's first experience with Mars pictures was as an 11-year-old, watching images on the nightly TV news sent back by the Viking landers in 1976. He was later involved in the Mars Pathfinder mission and went on to lead the Pancam systems on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers, which inspired a new generation of Mars fanatics, including future scientists and engineers. The vistas that Perseverance will send back from its landing site, Jezero Crater, will be just as significant for those who work on the mission and everyone who's following along. That's why there are plans to share Mastcam-Z images and mosaics made by the amateur community on a public website. "It's important that the public have a sense of ownership," Bell said. "The Mastcam-Z images belong to all of us." Perseverance is a robotic scientist weighing about 2,260 pounds (1,025 kilograms). The rover's astrobiology mission will search for signs of past microbial life. It will characterize the planet's climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth, and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet. No matter what day Perseverance launches during its July 17-Aug. 5 launch period, it will land at Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission is part of a larger program that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet. Charged with returning astronauts to the Moon by 2024, NASA will establish a sustained human presence on and around the Moon by 2028 through NASA's Artemis lunar exploration plans. TOP IMAGE....This image, taken in the Spacecraft Assembly Facility's High Bay 1 at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, on July 23, 2019, shows a close-up of the head of Mars 2020's remote sensing mast. The mast head contains the SuperCam instrument (its lens is in the large circular opening). In the gray boxes beneath mast head are the two Mastcam-Z imagers. On the exterior sides of those imagers are the rover's two navigation cameras. LOWER IMAGE....This image shows a 3-D printed model of Mastcam-Z, one of the science cameras on NASA's Mars 2020 rover. Returns are free, but that sweater that didn't fit might go into the incinerator
Tumblr media
Virtual fitting room
Free returned clothing goes straight into the trash. A waste of the dress or sweater, and it pollutes the environment. What do web shops do to make the return process more sustainable and how can consumers themselves prevent a failed online clothing purchase?
Does that sweater not fit very well, is the material disappointing or was it an impulse purchase? Just send it back! No problem, feel free to take a hundred days for it. Returns are free anyway.
In this way, web shops make online purchases and returns accessible to consumers. It has become an indispensable part of online shopping: the Dutch have returned an average of about forty percent of their clothing purchases in recent years. This means that we have been among the European top when it comes to returns for a few years now. But this comes with a price, for the environment and for the web shops themselves. Because that forty percent of returned jackets, shoes and trousers often do not go back into the online clothing racks. In June, British television program ITVNews[1] revealed that Amazon destroys millions of returned products because it is cheaper than restocking items in the warehouse. That drastic decision has everything to do with money.
Tying knots and removing hair
Destroying is cheap. Letting the product go through the entire return process costs an average of 12.50 euros per shipment, the e-commerce company Docdata[2] has calculated. So what are those costs? Wraping a package costs about 2.50 euros, delivery 3.75. With a return, a company has already incurred those costs for nothing. With a return shipment, the transport costs are again added, an inspection of the package, making it tidy (fasten buttons, remove hair), and wrap it again. In total, this costs Dutch web shops tens of millions per year. Web shops are therefore only too happy to prevent such returns. For example, Amazon is now coming up with a plan to destroy fewer returns. In addition to the option to resell returned products, there will also be the option to work with buyers of used products. These plans are rolling out first in the US; nothing is known about the Netherlands at the moment. Zalando invested in the virtual fitting room. With technology, a customer can better see how a garment would fit on his/her body. Zalando wants to integrate that technology on its platform. Clothing chain H&M is also developing such a virtual fitting room. It is not yet known when these developments will be ready for use.
Grab a tape measure
The 'online fitting room' is still anything but ideal at most web shops, but consumers can also do something themselves to prevent a return. Clothing stylist and personal shopper Suzi Vasques Dias: “The most sensitive part about clothing is the size. This is made really complicated, because web shops use different sizes. Because this creates such uncertainty, people often order multiple sizes: 'mine must be in there', they think. But this behaviour always causes a return. My biggest tip is therefore: take a tape measure and measure yourself.”
What should you measure? “The bust size, waist size and hip size”, Vasques Dias sums up. “Put that size next to the available size chart on the web shop to check whether you are buying the right size. Also immerse yourself in the product. Do you prefer a certain material, for example cotton or viscose? Then check whether the product is completely made of it. And be critical: do you really need it?”
And ask yourself: do you really have to order this online, or can you just as easily cycle to your favourite store to try it on? “In times of corona, smaller stores have also started to use social media more. Follow boutiques from your own area on Instagram. Then you can get that inspiration online, but still make use of the physical fitting room.”
Still return
If it does come to a return, how can web shops make this as sustainable as possible? H&M gives consumers the option to return the package via bicycle couriers. Wehkamp[3] uses a special wrapping machine that wraps each package to size. The smaller the package, the less space it takes up during transport, which leads to fewer emissions. Otto[4] is currently looking into the possibilities of providing an indication of door-to-door CO2 emissions for each product in the web shop, in order to create more awareness. Bol.com[5] also sees benefit in making the transport of parcels more sustainable, for example by opting for green gas or electric transport. And now more and more web shops, such as those of clothing store Anna van Toor[6] or the Twente Sans Online[7], are now charging an amount for returns. The costs for the customer are then 4 to 6 euros. The European Commission is working on a bill banning the destruction of non-food products, such as clothing, books or electronic devices[8]. This law has already been adopted in France[9] and will be introduced in 2024. Companies are encouraged to donate or recycle unsold products and can expect a hefty fine if they incinerate the products anyway.
