To keep that smile there

I’m 5 episodes now into Stars Align and it has touched me so deeply. This anime is truly such a gem.

Warnings: Some spoilers for Stars Align, gets pretty angsty (angst to fluff more specifically), mentions of child abuse. Also this fic contains tickling so if that’s not your thing feel free to not read.

Summery: After Toma goes to Makis house to defend him from his abusive dad (who comes often to take money from him and his mom), Makis still shaken up about it. What can Toma do to help him take his mind of things for a little while?

“Thank you for being there.” Maki said, barely a whisper as he bit back a whimper. He gripped Toma in a tight hug as if he was a life line, and tears beaded his eyes. After having to deal with his abusive dad by himself, what with him continuously coming over to raid their money, Maki couldn’t truly express just how relieved he was to finally have someone there for him.

“Any time Maki. You weren’t kidding. That guy is seriously garbage. I can’t imagine what it’s been like for you, having to go through that by yourself all this time.”

They then went to Makis bedroom. Toma thought it would help calm Maki down if they went to a more comfortable room. He figured he should stay anyway, just a little longer. He wanted to make absolutely sure the guy was going to be ok before leaving him.

They sat on the bed together. Maki didn’t say it out loud because he didn’t want to ruin the comfortable silence, but just Toma being there helped him feel better.

Toma felt he needed to help take Makis mind off what had just happened. But what could he do? He fortunately saw some manga on his desk.

“I like your collection.” He commented with a smile, nodding to the desk where they stood. Maki looked at the books, “O-oh yeah thanks. I took some summer jobs to save up so I can buy some.”

They continued their sit in silence for a bit longer. Toma glanced at Maki. There was still so much fear etched on his face.

Toma wished he could do something to help him feel better. But what?

“Hey Katsuragi…” Toma began, he landed a gentle poke to his side. He was just trying to be playful, hoping that this would lighten the mood more.

But he didn’t expect Maki to squeak and flinch away. Toma froze in shock for a second. Had he hurt him? Was he uncomfortable with being touched after all he went through with his dad?

But he didn’t see fear on his face anymore. Wait, was that a smile? Suddenly a small grin grew on his face as realization clicked into place.

“Katsuragi, are you ticklish?”

“I… n-no I’m not!” Maki quickly told him, although he immediately clamped his arms to his side at the question.

On one hand, Toma wondered if now was the best time for something like this, given what had just happened not too long ago. But when he remembered wanting to take his mind off his dad, he realized this might be the best method to do so.

“Ok then…” They went quiet for a moment, until….

“GOTCHA!!!” Toma cried, lightly pushing him back to the bed and latching onto Makis sides, digging in gently.

Maki yelped and immediately bursted into giggles, gripping onto his wrists weakly.

“H-hehehey nohohot fahahair!!!” Maki cried through his giggles. Toma had to admit he was a little surprised to hear that his laugh was so child like, considering that he usually acted so much more mature than most kids their age.

“Didn’t you know the rules? When a persons ticklishness is found out, you have to tickle them!”

“Thahahats nohohot a thihihng HAHahaha nohohot thehehere!!!!” The giggles turned into laughter as Toma went under his shirt and began kneading into the soft of his belly. Maki squealed, trying to curl up to protect himself. But it was hardly any use.

“Oh Cmon Katsuragi, I know you can laugh harder than that!” Toma encouraged jokingly, going further up to his ribs.

“HAHAHAHA NOHOHOHO WAHAHAHAIT!!!!!” Makis giggles then exploded into actual laughter.

“Bad spot?” Toma teased, making extra care to dig into the grooves between his ribs.

“YEHEHEHES STOHOHOHOP!!!” This time, tears of joy beaded Makis eyes.

Toma then stopped to let Maki breathe.

“Sorry about that Maki. You ok?” He asked with an apologetic smile.

“Y-yehehes I’m fihihne…” Maki hugged his arms around his ribs, which still tingled from the tickle attack.

He then finally caught his breath and sat up. “Wow you really are super ticklish Katsuragi.” Toma teased poking his ribs lightly, “How did we not realize this sooner?”

“Sh-shuhut uhuhp…” Maki giggled, pushing at his offending hand. He then landed a soft punch to Tomas arm.

Toma looked and saw the bright smile on his face.

Much better. He thought to himself. Now he just had to make sure that smile continued to exist on Maki Katsuragis face. And he would make sure to protect it at all costs.

Best Underrated Anime Group H Round 1: #H4 vs #H5

#H4: Teen Shogi prodigy grows up and battles his mental health

Having reached professional status in middle school, Rei Kiriyama is one of the few elite in the world of shogi. Due to this, he faces an enormous amount of pressure, both from the shogi community and his adoptive family. Seeking independence from his tense home life, he moves into an apartment in Tokyo. As a 17-year-old living on his own, Rei tends to take poor care of himself, and his reclusive personality ostracizes him from his peers in school and at the shogi hall.

However, not long after his arrival in Tokyo, Rei meets Akari, Hinata, and Momo Kawamoto, a trio of sisters living with their grandfather who owns a traditional wagashi shop. Akari, the oldest of the three girls, is determined to combat Rei's loneliness and poorly sustained lifestyle with motherly hospitality. The Kawamoto sisters, coping with past tragedies, also share with Rei a unique familial bond that he has lacked for most of his life. As he struggles to maintain himself physically and mentally through his shogi career, Rei must learn how to interact with others and understand his own complex emotions.

#H5: Middle school soft tennis club deals with trauma

Constantly outperformed by the girls' club, the boys' soft tennis club faces disbandment due to their poor skills and lack of positive results in matches. In desperate need of members, Toma Shinjou is looking to recruit capable players, but he fails to scout anyone. Enter Maki Katsuragi, a new transfer student who demonstrates great reflexes when he catches a stray cat in his classroom, instantly capturing Toma's attention. With his interest piqued, Toma ambitiously asks Maki to join the boys' team but is quickly rejected, as Maki doesn't wish to join any clubs. Toma refuses to back down and ends up persuading Maki—only under the condition that Toma will pay him for his participation and cover other club expenses.

As Maki joins the team, his incredible form and quick learning allow him to immediately outshine the rest of the team. Although this gives rise to conflict among the boys, Maki challenges and pushes his fellow team members to not only keep up with his seemingly natural talent, but also drive them to devote themselves to the game they once neglected.

#H4: March Comes in Like a Lion (Sangatsu no Lion)

Propaganda:

Sangatsu no Lion is a series that gets praise and has some awards, but it gets rarely talked about. It’s ranked highly on anime lists as being a good anime to watch, but there’s little fan engagement or video essays about it like other promising titles.

Maybe it's because the series is a slow-paced slice-of-life drama that goes over topics like mental health and the trauma of losing loved ones at a young age, and how those factors impacts the lead deeply.

Rei is a hard character to watch sometimes. He’s a doormat, shy and quiet, with crippling low self-esteem. He’s a social outcast. He puts a lot of burden on his own shoulders and blames himself for living up to people’s expectations. He’s a flawed and traumatized teenager forced to grow up too quickly.

Rei lives isolated, and that's how we're introduced to him. He has a strained relationship with his adoptive family. He has trouble interacting with his classmates. He has a few tentative friendships with the people he plays Shogi against, but Rei struggles to connect with others. It doesn't help that he feels pressured by the expectations placed on him as the fifth ever Shogi player to go pro in middle school, making him a prodigy. He's losing multiple matches and stagnating, struggling because of his mental health taking a downward spiral.

When Rei meets the Kawamoto girls, his life seems to get better. Rei initially doesn't want to get to close to the Kawamoto family for fear of rejection, but he ends up visiting often. With them, he receives the care and affection he never had in his foster home. He also learns to socialize and rely on others with his interactions with the Kawamotos, growing as a person.

Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Mild child neglect from adopted family, death of birth family, healing from mental health issues.

The plot revolves around Rei and him trying to cope with the stress of life and growing as a person. A part of this is him having to make peace with the trauma of losing his biological family and having a strained relationship with his adoptive family, who are neglectful and bitter towards him. The anime overall goes over Rei healing from his mental health issues, including battling his anxiety and issues with self-worth.

#H5: Stars Align (Hoshiai no Sora)

Propaganda 1:

Covers a wide variety of issues and gets into the nitty-gritty of the often under-prosecuted instances of child abuse in Japanese society. Multiple LGBT characters, subversions of gender roles, a simple but appealing art style, and some really talented seiyuu to top it all off.

Propaganda 2:

This series is so amazing even though it was cut halfway through (and the trigger warnings, mainly in regard to the environments many of the characters live in) make it difficult to suggest at times. It’s half a sports anime and half a drama, switching between the sports sections and explorations of the lives of the characters involved, the latter of which is the part I really adore. The story discusses the heavily discussed topic of abuse pretty well and also has a good handle on discussions about things like gender (specifically in regard to a canon non-binary character, though there is also a minor character who is a trans man who is also discussed) that I haven’t seen too many other series address, or at least not to the effectiveness of this story. The characters also just have so much charm and compliment each other well, and I love watching them get closer and interact. They’re buddies, and I adore the boys soft tennis team plus Yuu and Mitsue (+ Arashi I guess. He’s from a different school’s team and directly opposed the team, but he very quickly becomes their friend afterwards), as well as all of their dynamics. It’s not a watch for when you’re looking strictly to have a fun time or looking for a complete story, but it’s an amazing story regardless. Also, I love the opening and ending songs so much. I wish this series got its season two so much because it’s so good, I don’t think I did it justice at all.

Synopsis

The story centres around the boy’s soft tennis club at Shiratori middle school. Constantly outperformed by the girl’s soft tennis team, the boy’s team have lost all motivation to seriously commit to soft tennis. Their lax existence comes to an end, however, when a new rule requires every club to present some accomplishment in their field or face disbandment. This forces the boys to recruit more fresh talent to join their club.

When the clubs very passionate captain, Toma Shinjou, sees the newly transferred student, Maki Katsuragi’s, great reflexes, he immediately attempts to recruit him. Maki’s innate talent and great game sense rekindles the clubs team spirit and love for the sport.

The story essentially follows a group of young boys as they navigate through the difficulties of life as a middle schooler all while discovering their own potential, capabilities and interests. It brings to light their interactions with adults to show how those experiences shape the boy’s young minds and spirits.

This is such a beautiful anime! It handles very serious topics like abuse and abandonment extremely well. It encourages emotions in boys which is always appreciated (cause the patriarchy sucks). And openly discusses things like gender identity and being gay in such a normalised manner! There is seriously so much, so many people can learn from this anime!

The characters are all very well fleshed out and dynamic. You learn more about each boy through the series and there is not one person who is uninteresting or just there to fill space.

The content is also presented in a very palatable way, as the seriousness of the problems each boy is facing is juxtapositioned with wins and losses at various soft tennis games. It adds some respite to the intensity which keeps you hooked throughout!

Now, I can go on and on about this anime but I’ll stop here I think XP

1. The ending song is super fun! (This anime does this fun thing where the fast song is at the end and the slow emotional song is at the beginning)

2. Stay tuned for post credit scenes

3. It ends on an insane cliff-hanger that strangely doesn’t make you feel agitated? Just excited for what’s to come!

Summary:

Sakura Minamoto dreams of becoming an idol. Unfortunately, reality hits her like a truck, and she dies in a sudden traffic accident. Ten years later, she wakes up in Saga Prefecture, only to find herself a zombie with no memory of her past. While still coming to terms with her demise, she meets a man named Koutarou Tatsumi, who explains that he has resurrected her and six other zombie girls from different eras for the purpose of economically revitalizing Saga by means of an idol group. Assuming the role of an abrasive manager, Koutarou begins scheduling events; the girls go along with it, eventually deciding to name their idol group Franchouchou. An absurdly comedic take on the idol genre, Zombieland Saga tells the story of Franchouchou's heartwarming struggle to save Saga Prefecture while hiding their zombie identities and rediscovering their past lives.

Propaganda:

ITS SO GOOD OHMYGOD. First of all, the music? Amazing. The 3D animation they use for the dancing isn’t the best, but the songs are all bangers. The story is also amazing—it’s just the right blend of silly and serious to really get you to love and care about the characters. And it WILL make you cry. It’s a really cool take on zombies and really uses the full potential of its premise really well. Its dub is also actually good. The acting is great, and the jokes are translated perfectly.
