Hello everyone, much like most of the LGBT community around the world, I’ve devoured the beautiful show HEARTSTOPPER. I’ve at least cried one a day since watching the first time and I feel like I need to vent them all out and I hope you enjoy reading.
Both Kit Connor AND Joe Locke’s outstanding performances in these eight hours of perfect television. Wow. Not only did they standout on individual fronts:
Kit’s accurate portrayal of a teenager coming to understand his sexuality, to his gentle and loving portrayal of healthy masculinity. Not only did he make a beautiful character even more beautiful, he made an icon.
Joe’s vulnerable portrayal of a boy who is unashamed of his sexuality but doesn’t wish any animosity or pain on Nick who was still figuring out his feelings and sexuality. His also quiet but powerful portrayal of a boy who has an eating disorder (which will be explored in the inevitable second season) and his painful exposure to homophobia, gaslighting and bullying.
BUT TOGETHER ON-SCREEN, wow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a couple be portrayed so authentically and beautifully. To hear stories that they got along so well and would often playfully fight with each other/kit threaten to drop joe into the ocean/off his lap, it just makes the relationship as rich as what Alice Oseman intended. It was just such a natural and loving relationship and I can’t wait to see them grow with their characters.
And the supporting cast - amazing! I have to list them all - William Gao (Tao), Yasmin Finney (Elle), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Fisayo Akinade (Mr. Ajayi), Cormac Hyde-Corrin (Harry), Jenny Walser (Tori), Sebastian Croft (Ben), Rhea Norwood (Imogen), Tobie Donovan (Isaac) and the incomparable Olivia Colman as Nick’s darling mum, Sarah. They ALL and I MEAN ALL OF THEM shine in their own ways.
HEARTSTOPPER is a welcome and loving addition to the world. Netflix would be absolutely insane and idiotic if they dared cancelled this show. It’s a gnawing thought that’s been on my mind since I watched this show (especially with Netflix’s recent troubles) and to those with similar thoughts, let me try and make you feel better:
The show debuted to 14.55 million hours after three days. In comparison, Young Royals debuted to roughly ~9 million hours and it got a second season renewal.
The cast and Alice Oseman are gaining a lot more traction. Kit Connor almost now has 2 million Instagram followers, Joe Locke almost has 1.5 million. Alice Oseman’s follower count has risen as well. The official Heartstopper Instagram account is also nearing 1 million followers. As of April 30, it is currently ranked No.5 on the Global Netflix TV Show list, and it is in the top 10 of roughly 50 countries around the world.
The show has been trending across Tumblr, TikTok and Twitter the past week.
Netflix has been swooning and raving about the show across their social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. If it’s just a marketing ploy and then they cancel it BOY will Netflix face an uproar. And with Netflix needing a win, HEARTSTOPPER has essentially given it to them.
It sits highly with critics and audiences. It holds 100% Certified Fresh, 98% Audience on Rotten Tomatoes, it sits at 9.0/10 and at #83 on the Top 250 Shows on IMDb and holds Universal Acclaim status on Metacritic.
I have to remind myself constantly right now that HEARTSTOPPER is only just beginning there are no logical signs that this show is going anywhere yet and I hope people will continue to discover the show and fall in love with it. Regardless of whether you’re LGBTQ+ or straight there is much to love and admire here. It’s funny, it’s cute and it is unafraid of exploring darker themes in a healthy and authentic way. Don’t sleep on it, take it all in, read all the graphic novels and then take the show all in again.

Permanent Rain Press interview with Tobie Donovan (Isaac Henderson in Heartstopper)
youtube
My notes:
The Lion King is his favourite movie
He went to Bath Theatre Academy and graduated in 2020
He loves to sing and musical theatre was always his number one passion, and before Heartstopper his plan was to get a degree for it
Him and Alice talked about his character (Isaac Henderson) and how they wanted to keep a few similar things between his character and Aled Last
In his head (not canon!) Isaac is the oldest of three kids and has a mum and dad, the dad could be an english teacher or has a connection to books just like Isaac and they bond over that
He describes Isaac as the friend that you would miss if he wasn't there but also wouldn't notice them if he was there, that he's a protector
Hi favourite scene to be a part of was the bowling and arcade scenes
"I wanna believe in romance!" Is his iconic line and he recreated it hehe
The "antiseptic wipes" scene was shot a few times because him, Kit and Joe would keep laughing
He had a javelin double (whose name was Tobie as well) and he helped him understand the sport a bit more
His most favourite scene that he wasn't involved in was the party scenes in episode 3
Alice sent Tobie a list of books that they thought he would read but Tobie was the one to suggest Radio Silence
He thinks that Isaac is nonconfrontational, conflict of any sort is one of the worst things that could happen to him
He thinks that Isaac knew about Nick and Charlie before anyone else
If season 2 happens he would love to go to Paris and shoot a scene in a bookshop
He would also love to explore more of his home life, his family life and his queerness
They also talk about Alices tweet that said that Isaac was supposed to give out acearo vibes and that he would be honoured if his character got to bring that representation into the show
He thinks that Issac would have felt a bit uncomfortable (not in a bad way) if he was at the milkshake scene because everyone was on a date, and Isaacs favourite milkshake would probably be something weird (like bubblegum)
Issac's message to Tao and Elle saying that he's sick and can't go to movie night was him giving them like a "date" night, he definetly wasn't sick
He really likes the Mean Girls musical and hus favourite character is Karen
He is a fan of Sex Education and Young Royals (his favourite character is Simon)
He is also a fan of The Eternals and he loved the part where Phastos kisses his partner, he cried when watching that and it gave him hope and thought that he could also be a superhero
He loves the Marvels films and his favourite one is the second Captain America film
He is a massive fan of Harry Styles, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion,...
And if he could be any ice cream flavour it would be mint choc chip (same answer as Corinna)
He is such a bubbly and happy person! He just puts a smile on your face!

NCFE LEVEL 2 PHOTOGRAPHY – Assignment 2 & 3, Unit 2, Task 1&2,  1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4
RESEARCH
In the past month and a half, I have been lucky enough to attend two fantastic exhibitions, and to exhibit in one 🙂
PHOTO LONDON, SOMERSET HOUSE –  17- 20 May 2018
Tumblr media
Photo London. Somerset Ho. f7.1 1/640s 18mm ISO100
After making our way into London, I have to admit, I was struggling to cope physically pretty quickly, and I don’t think I saw nearly as much as I would have wanted to, but for my first ever photographic exhibition, it was a bit of a show-stopper!  Not strictly speaking an exhibition, it’s billed as an Art Fair, and was jammed with Literati and the glitterati too! Heart-stoppingly beautiful works and some eye-wateringly expensive prices.
Whilst it was amazing to see some of the iconic 50’s & 60’s fashion shots, especially those of John French (personal favourite of mine) to Terence Donovan and Bailey, I really did love seeing candid shots of Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren.

Some of the images I liked best were not simply photographs. A lot of them incorporated a range of materials and techniques; from paint to paper cutting & paper pricking, aluminium printed images, concept works such as video and kinetic light images. I am inspired to try out a few of these new-to-me techniques. I really loved these images. Sadly, I cannot tell you who made them, because I can’t stand for too long in one place, and it quite often involved standing waiting for a long time to read what the tiny piece of labelling said… sorry. 😦

I suppose in my own small way I have been making images along these lines for a long time, drawing and machine embroidering onto some of my own photo’s as part of my journalling.
I really was inspired though by the beautiful craft orientated images like that of  Maurizio Anzeri, a ‘photo sculptor’. If you are a regular reader of my blog you may remember my blog piece on this form of artwork. Anzeri takes vintage photographs and embroiders onto them with such precision and skill. Whilst the photograph remains a photographic image, it takes on another life as a sculpture. These beautifully executed, hypnotic works are mezmerising to look at. I am absolutely inspired and thrilled that I have actually seen some of these works. 🙂

I also loved this stunning image of Frida Kahlo (another heroine of mine) .. now having been a photography student for sometime now, you’d think I’d have taken a polarising filter with me to reduce the reflections on the glass wouldn’t you? Still…. it’s given me a chance to play with the image at home… lol.

Sadly we had to leave fairly quickly, because I was in pain….but it has made me want to go out and see more of what this talented World of Photography has to offer. It’s too difficult for me to choose any one image that I would have liked to have on my wall.. maybe it’s a bit like when there are too many options on a menu, you just can’t choose!?

LONDON NIGHTS, THE MUSEUM OF LONDON 11 May – 11 November 2018
We took a class outing to see this brilliant exhibition.  Portraits, documentary, conceptual and photographic film, over 200 stunning  exhibits showing nocturnal London, in all it’s colourful, vibrant, dramatic glory!
Whilst photographs are not permitted in the exhibition itself, I have managed to find a few of these images by internet search.

These stunning images of St.Pauls after the blitz, 29 December 1940 taken by Daily Mail photographer, Herbert Mason. No camera trickery or Photoshop here.
Historically, I’m a lifelong retro fan, but this exhibition had me thinking in some new directions.
I particularly enjoyed, this vibrant shot by Nick Turpin, of a lost in thought night-bus passenger.

I was blown away by this image from Rut Blees Luxemberg
This silver gelatin print on aluminium by Anthony Cairns would definitely take pride of place in my home!

This exhibition is definitely worth a visit and continues until mid November. There can surely be no other city quite like London? I think it’s at it’s best at night.
If you have spare time afterwards.. the museum itself is fascinating! Go!
The Rotunda outside the Museum also has it’s own exhibition featuring work from students in the local area.

RICHMOND SCHOOL OF ART – June 2018
Tumblr media
And then, even more excitingly,  to top it all off, we had our own exhibition here at Richmond Art College. It was well represented by all three levels of NCFE Phtography.
Armed with a hammer and panel pins, I set off… on a very sunny mid morning to put up my chosen images…. still at this point a little undecided as to which would be going up after all!

There isn’t a huge amount of room on the boards, once you take into account the number of students, and the standard of work is pretty awesome across all three groups.

It was lovely to get to meet our fellow students and compare notes, also to get feedback from our peers.
Such a busy month! I consider myself a true Culture Vulture now…..
