Ghosts of Our Days (GoOD) Masterpost
Warning: Spoilers for TMNT 2012 are afoot!
What is GoOD?
Ghosts of Our Days is a TMNT 2012 fanfiction written in tandem by myself and @theosb0rnway. It centers on Casey and Raph, features Rasey, and takes place during and after the Season 4 episode 'Requiem'.
It features several character deaths (it's TMNT so some aren't exactly static) and extreme violence. Characters swear, and allusions to child abuse are present, as well as homophobia and transphobia, both internalized and not. It also features the deterioration of mental health and sanity, in-depth murder plans, lack of self-care, and gender dysphoria. (This section is subject to additions and changes.)
Summary:
When the battle against Super Shredder goes fatally wrong and Raphael pays the price, Casey is forced to go into hiding while plotting revenge against his newest foe. Despite abandoning the turtles, April, and his old life for secrecy, he's not as alone as he thinks he is... or is that just his newfound insanity?
Where can I find it?
I publish all chapters on Tumblr and Ao3.
Ao3 (slower updates)
Chapter One: Shredded Heart
Chapter Two: Iced Iced Baby
Chapter Three: Best Laid Murder Plans
Chapter Four: A Lover's Desperation
Chapter Five: The Ugly and Casey Jones
Chapter Six: So You're a Ghost Now - A Tutorial by Hamato Raphael
Chapter Seven: Death, Like Truth, Is Entirely Relative
Chapter Eight: Meanwhile in Tokyo
Chapter Nine: A Better Life is a Boring Life (TW: References/implications of child abuse)
Chapter Ten: Sleep is not Listed in the Plan of Casey Jones
Chapter Eleven: Two's a Company, Three's a Crime (TW: Homophobic language, semi graphic descriptions of the murder of a cop.)
Chapter Twelve: Assault and Amaze (Sex scene, warnings are placed, so dw)
Chapter Thirteen: Fire in a Denny's Parking Lot at Three AM (Referenced sex, nothing happens)
Chapter Fourteen: Murder Masquerade
Chapter Fifteen: I Have A Foot But No a Head: What Am I?
Asks?
Asks for Oz and I are open! No spoilers or info on future chapters, so don't ask or we are legally and morally obligated to give you a response that is hilarious to us and infuriating to you.
Art asks are also open! Just adhere to the rules of common decency, we reserve the right to refuse a request. Scene redraws are encouraged and probably taking up a good chunk of our own WIPs. Don't be afraid to ask!
Anything Else?
Assuming you read/enjoy the fic, any sort of support would be greatly appreciated!
All chapters, art (by myself, Oz, and others), and additional content will be tagged under the tags ' Ghosts of Our Days ' or ' GoOD '
If anyone would like a tag list to be tagged in all chapters, let me know and I will make one!
I hope you enjoy our brain child! :)

Why 2012 Shredder is a pos: a thread
SPOILERS FOR 2012 TMNT BTW
I really didn’t think he could stoop lower than he already has, but to literally sacrifice the entirety of the world over a vendetta he clearly has made up in his head??? I whole heartedly think that Splinter clearly knew (before the turtles went back and fixed time) that Shredder doesn’t come without a price- shredder was seriously looking for a way to low blow Splinter and catch him off guard bc he knew he couldn’t beat him if they were to fight face to face
Treats Baxter like a pos- Baxter Stockman is probably one of the best allies that Shredder has- but I feel like shredder only recognizes him when it benefits himself. I think they should’ve steered the series in a different direction to where Baxter injects him with a chemical that’s not mutagen- possibly retro-mutagen because he knew shredder would literally become too powerful for his own good. Baxter had all the resources he needed to stop Shredder- and I bet he could’ve gotten FishFace to help out in some way bc at the end of it all, F.F even said he had enough- it turned into more than a petty vendetta against Splinter.
The writers found every which way possible to bring Shredder back, even creating a whole fucking cult and making Tiger Claw a devoted Shredder stan (which I didn’t really like, T.C shouldve rebranded the Foot like Karai- I feel as though Shredder takes in those who are at their lowest and manipulates them to obey him
He clearly has some sort of mental disease or something wrong with him to where he lies to himself so much that he actually starts to believe his lies. He thinks jealously and envy is a personality trait yall
He never actually wanted to care for Karai and love her, he made her seem like some trophy he got from “beating splinter” and only wanted her to spite him, but then in the same breath says that splinter took everything away from him??? I don’t know yall
I honestly think the beef between T.C and his sister was much worse- T.C had all reasons to beat her ass & get revenge bc the girl took his tail and then his arm- so yeah…that’s the only justifiable beef in the whole series
***sidenote: a spin off of Tiger Claw and his sister and their beef is something I would pay to watch***

quick thoughts on tmnt
random note:
a few days ago I saw the new tmnt movie since it just came out over here, and I rlly rlly loved it a lot, I don't want to talk too much about it because it's almost all spoilers and it just came out here, but I liked it a lot, especially the animation and visuals even though the story was kind of ok to me
it has also basically made me rediscover my old obsession with the ninja turtles, basically they are a "torch pass" among my family because several of my relatives grew up w it and have mentioned them for years, i remember enjoying them a lot many yrs ago with my brothers (the 2003 ones and that 2007 movie because that was what was around that time), but for some reason it got less and less after the paramount live action movie came out and because i didn't watch TV much around that time anymore
recently tmnt shredder's revenge and the new movie made me remember all that and I felt it very nice, I missed them, I'm thinking about watching the 2012 and rise movies because they are the ones I didn't see, i did checked the other movies out (except the 3rd one and the next mutation one) so id love to give those a try

TMNT: SATURDAY MORNING ADVENTURES #1 OCTOBER 2022 BY ERIK BURNHAM, TIM LATTIE, SARAH MYER AND SHAWN LEE
Tumblr media
The cartoon turtles are back (from somewhere before the red sky seasons), and this time around, they decide to try on Donatello’s VR system, only to find themselves trapped and at the mercy of their rogue gallery.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 10
I couldn’t believe the score either. But making this story the first issue was a genius idea.
First of all, the tone is exactly like in those first seven seasons of the show. This is what TMNT Adventures could have been.
Second, as I said, placing this story in the first issue was perfect, because it checks many characters from the list that fans wanted to see. This relieves the pressure from the following episodes.
The art is pretty good, it reminds me a lot of the packaging on the many action figures that you can find these days, and a little bit to Shredder’s Revenge. There are some interesting alternate covers by Eastman, Gregori and one colored by Lavigne.
There were a few odd things that I felt out of place. Like the fact that April and Casey were coming to the sewers with pizza (he doesn’t appear in the comic, though). This wasn’t something common in the show.
The other things were a random Raphael head in the middle of nothing, that I couldn’t figure out what it was. And the other thing that took me a while to get used to, was the pupils. Cannot explain why, but something looks weird with them. These are very minor things though.
Check out some of the cameos after the spoiler break...

Favorite TMNT show?
Probably the 2003 reboot that 4Kids did.
The original 80's/90's show is just too cheesy for me nowadays. I loved it deeply as a kid, but I must have spent too long away from it, because going back with adult eyes and I could not stand it for very long. It really is mostly a 30 minute toy commercial that they hang some absolutely awful cheesy jokes on top of.
I started watching the CGI show when it premiered, but that first season very quickly fell in to a routine of "the turtles screw up and create a new mutant by accident, and then beat up that mutant when it tries to get revenge on them." Which is a pretty messed up viewpoint, to be honest. I hear it gets a little less monster-of-the-week in later seasons, and I've caught some of it on PlutoTV's 24/7 TMNT channel, but it rests firmly in the realm of "just okay."
Haven't seen a lick of Rise, outside of the absolutely insane fight clips that were being passed around on twitter a few years ago. Good lord, what a beautiful show. I naturally had a knee-jerk shock reaction to them shaking up the dynamic (making Raph the leader, making all the turtles so visually distinct, etc.), but I don't think I'd hate it if I actually sat down and saw it. But I don't have cable anymore, I can't afford any streaming services anymore, and even when I did I just didn't feel like I had the time.
But the 2003 reboot, wow. I am always thinking about the season 1 finale, when the turtles assault Shredder's dojo. It's the last showdown; Leo has Shredder's tengu sword, and Shredder has Leo's katanas. They both rush each other and deliver a decisive blow in an iconic shot.
Tumblr media
That type of shot. The ninja-vs-ninja shot.
And what happens after they clash... in context, being there in 2003, watching this at 8am on a Saturday morning, from a production studio known for some of the tightest, most bizarre censorship rules...
And then you see that (spoiler link) happen. And it's this total moment of "THEY GOT AWAY WITH THAT?? THE CENSORS LET THEM JUST DO IT???" And they kind of linger on it! Like they're saying "yeah, we got away with it!"
I was reeling. And they marinate in it for as long as they can before setting up how things can continue after that. And instead of it feeling like a copout or whatever, it made me go "Ohhhhh crap."
Absolutely perfect.
Until Al Khan pissed off Peter Laird and he severed his ties with the show. It didn't take long for it to go down the toilet after that. But before then? I'd put the first three or four seasons of TMNT 2003 close to, like, Batman TAS and Spectacular Spider-man for some of my favorite types of comic-to-cartoon shows. They pushed so many boundaries on TMNT 2K3 for something in the Saturday Morning time slot, it's crazy.
And even if the show itself ended on a whimper, Turtles Forever was WAY ahead of its time and basically set the standard for that type of "modern incarnations meet the classic cast" crossover that was (and still kind of are) so common.
Unforgettable.

TMNT PIA: Character Introduction - Splinter
Tumblr media
Splinter’s real name is Hamato Yoshi. Before being mutated into a rat, he was a human male from Japan. About 20 years before the story officially begins, Yoshi and his fiancé Teng Shen would move to the US and settle in New York. The reason behind the move (I’m being as vague as possible with the details because it’s a HUGE spoiler) was due to a crime Yoshi had committed and wanting to escape the consequences they fled.
Once in the states Yoshi and Teng Shen befriended the O’Neil’s. They were kind to them and helped them find their place in another country where they didn’t speak much of the native language. Teng Shen would eventually get married and they hey would then go on to have a happy, if trying life in the States with their four more children and the pet rat and turtle. Five years after they moved however, Yoshi’s dark past finally got its revenge on him.
In this iteration, the turtles are actually Splinter and Teng Shen’s biological children. They were born human, but were all mutated the same night their father was.
One night, three armed men broke into the Hamato’s apartment. During the struggle, Teng Shen was murdered right in front of Yoshi, moments later another one of the armed men smashed a canister of strange, glowing green liquid over Yoshi’s head. Yoshi was able to fight back but the men fled from the scene, he held Teng Shen until she took her final breath. Yoshi would soon forced to flee from the scene with his children, when his body began to transform into that of a giant rat, highly resembling his pet rat Splinter. Due to coming in close contact with the ooze on their father’s clothing, the children too would mutate into that of turtles, due to the last thing they touched being the family’s pet turtle.
Yoshi and the children would be forced to live a shameful life in the shadows of the sewers of NYC, hiding from people, trying to figure out what to do and scavenging for food. Overtime, they managed to find a way to adapt to this new life, continuing to love as the family they were always meant to be. At least that’s the story he always told his sons…
Overall, Splinter is a laidback single dad in his mid 40’s, who may not always get it right, but he loves his kids more than anything and is trying his best given the circumstances.
Tumblr media
Facts about the character
Actually good parent who really does love and care about his kids more than anything in the world. He’s really affectionate with them and takes genuine interest in their interests.
The turtles will usually refer to him as anything along the lines of ‘Dad’ or ‘Papa’, with ‘Otou-San/Tou-Chan’ also being commonly used titles for him. But in the dojo, when they are training, they strictly call him ‘Sensei’, ‘Master Splinter’ or ‘Father’.
He raised the turtles to be fluent in both English and Japanese. Sometimes he’ll have entire conversations with them in just Japanese for hours.
As is almost always the case in other iterations, Splinter knows ninjutsu because he is descended from an ancient clan of ninja’s, known as the Hamato Clan. Because of this, he was trained in martial arts and ninjutsu from a very young age, and was also taught the sacred history of the clan.
For a voice actor, I actually had a difficult time picking someone, I just knew that I wanted Splinter to be voiced by someone who is Japanese, since that’s only ever happened once, Mako Iwamatsu, who voiced him in the 2007 movie. Eventually I settled on Yuki Matsuzaki, who’s not particularly known for his voice acting roles, but he was in 2012 TMNT, TMNT Shredder’s Revenge and even Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles, as the same character, Usagi Miyamoto.

**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● I'm so excited! ● tails!! ● [pg. 8] the turtle fingers gripping a manhole cover is such an iconic image. I love that it was here from the very beginning. The narrative tone is solid so far. Definitely sounds like Leo. ● I've heard somewhere that the story of the mutagen (blind man, truck, kid being struck by toxins) is homage to Matt Murdock (Daredevil)'s origin story. Considering the similarity, I'd certainly believe it to be true! I know TMNT and Batman have teamed up several times, but I'd also love to see a team-up with Daredevil… especially one that closes the loop on their shared origins. ● ah! The afterword mentions the homage to Daredevil. Good to have validation!
Synopsis: The book opens with the Turtles battling some 15 gun-toting thugs and mopping up the New York City alleyway with them. Once the police show up, the Turtles head for home in the sewer. The TMNT find Master Splinter and tell him of their victory. Splinter decrees that they are now ready to be told of their mission… a mission of retribution!
The Sensei tells the Turtles, for the first time, their origins. Splinter was once the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi, said to be the greatest shadow warrior of his clan, known as the Foot. While watching Yoshi practice his art of combat, Splinter would mimic his movements and eventually became as adept as his human benefactor. Splinter explains that Yoshi had a bitter rivalry with a fellow clan member, Oroku Nagi. They competed fiercely in all things, even in matters of the heart. They both fell in love with a beautiful woman named Tang Shen, but she loved only one of them in return: Splinter's Master, Yoshi.
Nagi became extremely jealous and one night in a fit of rage he went to Tang Shen's home and demanded that she love only him. She refused, and Nagi began to beat her. Just then, Yoshi came upon them, and in a fit of red rage he slew Nagi. This was a shameful act in the eyes of the Foot Clan, as one member must never kill another. Yoshi had two choices: he could take his own life in ritual suicide and hope for honor in the next life, or he could flee the Clan and attempt to start a new life. Master Yoshi decided on the latter, and fled to New York City with Tang Shen, Splinter, and a few possessions. He started his own martial arts school and all went well for years.
In Japan, Nagi's brother Saki had sworn vengeance against Yoshi, the man who had killed his sibling. His anger pushed him to become a premiere ninja in the Foot, and as a reward for his hard work and diligence, the Clan sent him to New York City to lead the Big Apple's branch of ninjas. Saki recognized this as his opportunity to reap his revenge against Hamato Yoshi and slay him.
Saki quickly built the New York branch of the Foot into a criminal powerhouse involved in many illegal activities; from drug smuggling and arms running to their specialty of assassination. But he never forgot his goal, and after a time he tracked Yoshi and Tang down, and set his vengeance into motion. While Yoshi was away at work, Saki broke into his apartment and murdered Tang Shen. Saki lay in wait until Yoshi returned home. As Hamato walked through the door he saw his dead wife and her murderer Oroku Saki, who proclaimed himself to be the Shredder. A great fight broke out, and Splinter's cage was broken, freeing him. Eventually, the youthful Shredder bettered his older combatant, and Yoshi was slain as well. Anguished over the death of his Master, Splinter fled to the alleys and lived off of garbage scraps.
Until the day when a TCRI truck drove by, and a strange canister flew out of its hold. The container struck a young man in the head, bounced off of the pavement and smashed into a boy's aquarium filled with turtles. The shattered glass, canister and turtles all fell into an open manhole cover, dropping into the murky sewer below. The metal container held some strange chemical, and when it hit the floor of the sewer it broke, bathing the Turtles in its glowing ooze. Splinter, curious, went to see what had become of the turtles. He collected them into a coffee can and cleaned the goo off of them as best he could. The next day the wise rat found that he and the Turtles were mutating… becoming more human-like with each passing day! Eventually the turtles spoke, and Splinter began to set his own plan for vengeance into motion. He began training the turtles in the art of ninjutsu that he had learned from Hamato Yoshi. He named each Turtle after a famous Renaissance artist, whose names he had found in an old book forsaken in the sewer.
After hearing the tale of their origins, the turtles knew what they must do: they had to avenge the death of Splinter's Master Yoshi… they had to defeat the Shredder in mortal combat! Raphael goes on a guerrilla mission to deliver a message to Saki… which he does in typical Raphael fashion. The message demands that Saki meet the Turtles on the rooftops to duel to the death in the name of honor. The Shredder brings many Foot with him, and a great battle between the Turtles and the ninjas erupts. The turtles win hands down, forcing Shredder into combat. The fight is close, but the Turtles use teamwork to best Saki. Once the turtles have defeated Shredder, they demand that he commit seppuku to regain the honor he had lost when he murdered Yoshi. Saki refuses and displays a thermite grenade that he had concealed in his costume. The Shredder vows that if he is to die he will take the Turtles with him. Donatello saves the day by throwing his bo staff into Saki's jaw, knocking him and the grenade from the rooftop. As the Shredder falls, the Turtles rush to the edge of the building, seeing the handheld bomb go off in a blinding flash. The turtles have performed the task that Master Splinter had trained them for. With their mission complete, the Turtles fade into the night.

Why Mutant Apocalypse Broke So Many Hearts... (Under the cut for spoilers.)
If there are responses to this I will reply AFTER Apritello Week. :)
First, the things I liked:
Donnie: his design was nearly perfect, that is, if you’re okay with the fact that he’s basically dead, except for his brain. I wasn’t entirely okay with it because that’s my boy, but you learn to move on. I appreciated the star patch over his heart, but more about that in a moment. Also, he was basically Bunnytello and that warmed me to the design more than I would have thought.
The animation: Yes, it was lovely as always. The animators for this show have never given anything less than their best and it shows here too.
Tremors gag: I wonder how many people were old enough to get it.
Casey Bomb: I’ve said it before. This was his deathbed wish. You can fight me. It’s how he wanted to go.
Now, for the rest...
I’ll begin by saying, several people have pointed out that this story line isn’t canon, it was just a “Tale.” And you know, I get it. If the folks at TMNT had a thing for Mad Max, I can see why writing an entire TMNT AU script would be fun. And I think, it could have been fun for me to watch. Maybe. But here’s the problem:
It was the very last episode. And we were given no warning that we should have said “goodbye” to our favorite characters prior to watching it. We all wondered if our questions would be answered. Not just about our ships, but about story lines that seemed to taper off into oblivion. Characters like Karai and especially April never got the closure they sought through the entire series and, by the end, this fact seemed unimportant to Ciro and the other showrunners. We spent five years getting to know these ladies and, as a full grown adult, I can say I loved our kunoichis.
This show has continuously pushed strong women to the side to bolster male characters, like Leo, who really don’t need it. I know this show is about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But let me ask this, what is the point of creating dynamic, beautiful, strong, clever, fierce and determined female characters with intriguing story lines, if only to abandon them in the end? And for another, Our Male Lead is Flawed but Only Because He’s So Heroic story?
The treatment of April is particularly heartbreaking. Ciro himself once said that April was meant to be THE FIFTH TURTLE. Some time ago I made a post about how her first season design even resembled the turtles because she was meant to be a part of the team, unlike in previous incarnations, when she was basically an aunt or surrogate mother to the turtles. So, if you successfully make one of your characters a real part of the team, why take them out in the end? Why say, no, they’re really not part of the team? And you’re being a sore loser if it upsets you? And what is the point in insulting fans who have stuck by your show, through good times and bad for five years when you know exactly why they’re upset?
Ciro and company gave us our April O’Neil. I loved this April more than any of the others. They made her everything TMNT fans ever deserved and, in the end, told us she didn’t matter. Aside from a symbol over Donnie’s heart and a broken tessen swinging on the rear view, she didn’t even warrant a mention? There was plenty of time for crazy violence and multiple car chases, but there wasn’t a 15 second period in which Donnie or even Raph could have said, “We lost more than just our brothers...” And hey, I’m perfectly fine with violence. It was definitely excessive, but I would have been good with it, if it hadn’t been at the expense of closure for the audience. Even if this story wasn’t canon, the other Tales of TMNT arcs that have been released also gave us nothing.
As far as we know, April’s mother really did die. Her father was clearly suffering from PTSD, but that was never addressed either (he gave Casey some serious evil eye at one point and it didn’t seem like a gag). Karai never got her revenge on the man who killed both of her parents because, you know, Leo needed another HERO moment. Not only did Karai not get to take down Shredder, she was completely benched for the final fight.
Without going into a long rant (I know, too late), this just feels like Joss Whedon Level fake feminism.
“See, we love strong female characters! Look at these women! They’re powerful, resourceful and independent!”
And then:
“But having strong female characters shouldn’t come at the expense of proving that our male characters are more important. In fact they are MORE important than the female character we once said was JUST as important. We totally get women.”
So, I hope fellow fans can see why this upset me. I will forever be a TMNT fan. And I will always love certain things about this incarnation. But I will also always feel cheated. Yes, Ciro, I’m happy you got the ending you wanted. I never would have asked you to sacrifice that. Afterall, you did wonderful things for the franchise. All I ever wanted, and all your other fans ever wanted, was to see ALL of our characters get the ending they deserved. And I think April, Karai and even the Turtles deserved better.
I have so much more to say about the whole arc, but I’ll leave it for now. I have a fandom week to celebrate and I won’t let this dim my spirits! I hope, if you’re reading this, you’re having a great Apritello Week!
