So, if you need a laugh, or want some nostalgia because you can no longer afford playing each new Pokémon game as it comes out - give this a listen
The guys who make this show possible - Stew, Ali, Tom, David - are just… idk, they seem like genuinely good guys. They feel like they’re friends, and maybe it’s just my loneliness, but it’s really nice to listen to. Listening to each episode is basically like sitting around listening to four good people, four friends, mess around in the Pokémon world

I’ve seen a lot of people be sad that Martin didn’t say “you’re my reason, too” back to Jon in TMA 167, even not part of the “Martin is evil” crowd, and I can understand why you’d feel this way! But if you look at the actual context and dialogue, it would be trite at best and downright contradictory at worst.
Martin: So...what? Without assistants she’d be bad at the apocalypse?
Jon: W-Without trust. Without a reason.
Gertrude needed both the purpose her mission gave her and the control her position allowed. To be here, like us, without a, a reason, without someone to ground her? She - She’d have power, but...no control. No real purpose.
Perhaps she’d have dedicated herself to a d-doomed quest like us but... No. I think this would have broken her. And she’d have resigned herself to...ruling her domain.
...
Martin: (coy) So... If you say Gertrude wouldn’t have been able to go on without a reason--
Jon: (fond and longsuffering) Yes, Martin, you are my reason.
Here, the context is Gertrude, and her contrast with Jon. The Archivist who chose to distance and harden herself vs. the Archivist who chose to trust and care. Gertrude would have “power, but not control” on her own, and would have “resigned herself to ruling her domain.” This is 100% relevant to Jon, constantly fighting the battle not to lose himself, constantly resisting what Helen urged him to do in 164 to just give up and have fun.
For Martin, there is no issue of “power, but no control.” Including Martin in this Archivist contrast just...doesn’t make sense and would dilute the power of the Gertrude vs. Jon theme so constant in this episode.
But I’m gonna say something super daring: I don’t think it’s true for Martin! And that doesn’t mean he loves Jon any less!
We’ve seen Martin without Jon. We already know what he would do if he lost him; we don’t need a hypothetical, and injecting it here isn’t necessary. But it’s the reverse of what’s being discussed here! When he lost Jon, he coped by throwing himself into a doomed quest. Subconsciously he “thought it was a good way to get killed,” as he said in TMA 158, but at the time he excused it to himself as having a goal: protect the others from Peter Lukas, keep Peter from randomly vanishing the employees of the Institute, maybe even save the world from the Extinction. When Martin is at rock-bottom, he finds an impossible quest to throw himself into. Jon hasn’t reached rock-bottom because he has Martin, but here he says that the danger for him is to just give up and revel in his power.
If, somehow, the world ended and Martin was left alone in this world, but with the same level of freedom and agency he has now...I’m pretty sure he would still be on this “kill Elias and save the world” quest. That’s just who he is as a person. He doesn’t have the same weaknesses and dangers as Jon! They’re different people, with completely different character arcs! If Martin had parroted “you’re my reason, too” back at Jon here, I would have reared back with a what the fuck that doesn’t even make sense instead of enjoying the cute heartfelt moment.
Lastly, TMA’s writing is a big fan of parallels and echoes, but it spreads them out across seasons. Remember how much we lost our minds over Jon saying “I need him to be okay” in season 4, when Martin said it back in season 3? Remember waiting five months between Martin’s “I really loved you” in TMA 159 and Jon’s “I love you” a couple episodes later? Or most painful of all “We need you, I need you” from the season 4 trailer, vs. Jon trying to reach Martin with those very words in 159? If we play a “there are no feelings because the other doesn’t immediately say it back” game, the entire series falls apart.
“You are my reason” is just another in this series of echoes. Martin already said Jon was his reason back in TMA 158, but it wasn’t to tether him to his humanity, it was to give the hollow quest he had already chosen a purpose. 167 was a bookend to this, not something Martin purposefully left hanging.
ANYWAY THEY’RE IN LOVE AND BOTH LOVE EACH OTHER
P.S. We can already be sure that the tapes missed Jon’s first of many “I love you’s” based on how his was delivered in TMA 161; we can be just as sure Martin has said it just as many times. Please remember the tapes as a storytelling device here. Kisses are probably happening too and we know the tapes are allergic to that, so.

Alice Isn’t Dead
Genre: horror, thriller, drama, Lovecraftian, Americana
Episode count: 30 (completed)
Description: A truck driver searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search, she will encounter not-quite-human serial murderers, towns literally lost in time, and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman.
Thoughts: This podcast is, to me at least, completely flawless in every way. I would consider myself a person that listens to a lot of horror podcasts, but Alice Isn’t Dead takes the cake for its depictions of liminal middle America, the horror that is capitalism, and the most tender, realistic depiction of lesbians in any podcast. Anything else I could say would spoil it and for this, I don’t want to spoil it because I want every person alive that can stomach horror to listen to this.
Archive 81
Genre: horror, comedy, sci-fi, Lovecraftian
Episode count: 35 (ongoing)
Description: Archive 81 is a found footage horror podcast about ritual, stories, and sound.
Thoughts: The latest podcast I’ve tried, and it’s definitely one that grows on you. The audio mixing is some of the best I’ve heard in any podcast, and every bump and scratch and hum of frequency weaves to form moments that are truly and viscerally gory. Season 3 and Left of The Dial are my favorites because again, I love Americana horror, and anything that involves family!
Artificial Ghost Radio
Genre: non-fiction, discussion, comedy
Episode count: 75 (ongoing)
Description: Our Sisyphean music recommendation challenge with hosts Miles (he/him) and Jupiter (she/they) challenge each other to find songs based on arbitrary themes and to spin the WHEEL OF DISCORD to talk about a random song from their library! They can be found on twitter @artghostpod.
Thoughts: Gotta plug my own podcast! We’re still small, but the people I’ve met from doing AGR has made my life richer and fuller, even through the ups and downs. I recommend starting with #58: Songs about Aliens ft. our friend Liz (@thescaryjokes)!
EOS 10
Genre: medical drama, comedy, sci-fi

Description: Doctors in space, a deposed alien prince, a super gay space pirate and a fiery nurse who'll help you win your bar fight. Thoughts: It’s been a hot minute since I listened, but as someone that inherently loves things like Star Trek and procedural comedies, EOS 10 is a quick and hilarious listen! Fair warning some of the earlier stuff is a little bit ignorant when it comes to their LGBT characters, but it gets a lot better over time.
King Falls AM
Genre: horror, comedy, Lovecraftian

Description: King Falls AM centers on a lonely little mountain town's late-night AM talk radio show and its paranormal, peculiar happenings and inhabitants
Thoughts: I’m a bit behind, but again, gotta love some Alpine American horror! King Falls AM perfectly captures the feeling and sound of listening to a small late night radio show with two bros, but it really goes from typical dude dialogue to heart wrenching found family alien conspiracy real quick. Same as EOS 10, fair warning for some ignorant language and LGBT stereotypes, but they address it and it gets better as it progresses.
Not Another D&D Podcast
Genre: actual play Dungeons and Dragons, TTRPG, comedy
Episode count: 128 (ongoing)
Description: Welcome to the campaign after the campaign! Three unlikely adventurers attempt to right the wrongs caused by a party of legendary heroes who screwed up the world while trying to save it.
Thoughts: I’m only like 40 episodes in because they’re thick, meaty ‘sodes, but god is NADDPOD fucking hilarious. I’ve tried a fair few TTRPG shows, but the chemistry and care that the cast has together is unmatched by others in the genre. I’m a complete sucker for shows that are so funny and so tragic in equal measures, and the entire concept of a D&D game set after the world has been so drastically changed by a different D&D game is so unique!
The Faculty of Horror
Genre: non-fiction, horror, philosophy, sociology, feminism
Episode count: 86 (ongoing)
Description: Tackling all things horror with a slash of analysis and research, horror journalists and occasional academics Andrea Subissati and Alexandra West are your hosts for brain-plumping discussions on all things that go bump in the night.
Thoughts: A little non-fiction in this list of fiction podcasts! The Faculty of Horror is a concise and educated intersectional feminist podcast, and it’s a breath of fresh air to listen to anyone that isn’t a cishet white guy talk about horror. I highly recommend the episode on Cabin in The Woods or Jennifer’s Body!
The Magnus Archives
Genre: horror, office comedy
Episode count: 180 (ongoing)
Description: The Magnus Archives is a weekly horror fiction anthology podcast examining what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, an organization dedicated to researching the esoteric and the weird. Join new head archivist Jonathan Sims as he attempts to bring a seemingly neglected collection of supernatural statements up to date, converting them to audio and supplementing them with follow-up work from his small but dedicated team.
Thoughts: TMA is, similarly to A81, a bit of a slow burn to get into, but I think once you listen to a few episodes you’ll know if you want to continue. It’s a pretty standard prompt for a narrative, but the sheer amount of individual short horror stories they’ve managed to write is insane! And I love the slow break down between recording statements and the stuff happening within the archives. Also one of the best redemption stories in a character that starts off as such a grumpy fuck!
The Penumbra Podcast
Genre: sci-fi, neo-noir, romance, comedy, found family, magic, medieval fantasy, adventure, mystery
Episode count: 75 (ongoing)
Description: At the Penumbra, you might follow Juno Steel, a brooding, sharp-witted private eye on Mars, as he tangles with an elusive homme fatale, tracks dangerous artifacts of an ancient alien civilization, and faces his three greatest fears: heights, blood, and relationships. Or you might enter the world of the Second Citadel, where the merciless Sir Caroline must corral a team of emotionally distraught all-male knights to defend their city against mind-manipulating monsters...even the ones they’ve fallen in love with.
Thoughts: On god TPP was a life changing podcast for me. Having creators that are genuinely concerned with accurately representing minorities with care and dedication makes me feel spoiled when I try listen to anything else. The two main universes are so different with their own set of histories and cultures, but I love them both so completely. If you want LGBT+ representation, this is the seminal podcast for everything non-binary, trans, queer, and people that aren’t afraid to change and have that change be known! I haven’t listened to another podcast that actually depicts transitioning like they do, absolute king shit.
Wolf 359
Genre: space drama, comedy, action
Episode count: 61 (completed)
Description: WOLF 359 is a radio drama in the tradition of Golden Age of Radio shows. Set on board the U.S.S. Hephaestus space station, the dysfunctional crew deals with daily life-or-death emergencies, while searching for signs of alien life and discovering there might be more to their mission than they thought
Thoughts: Wolf 359 is like if you fell down the stairs and at the bottom of the stairs was a bear trap, and then after you step in the bear trap someone helps you take off that beartrap, but then they kick you in the nuts. Just replace physical pain with emotional pain. It can be so funny but also so fucking stressful and sad – w359 isn’t afraid to kill its darlings, and it will break your heart but you will still say thank you.

i woke up at 4:30 in the morning with this messy meta about the comparative horror styles of welcome to nightvale vs the magnus archives and how i like them both very much this is not a one is better than the other post because they’re DIFFERENT but also why, personally, nightvale has freaked me out more than TMA (the magnus archives- im gonna use the abbreviation from now on and in scientific papers u gotta ESTABLISH the acronym and it’s actually kind of annoying bc they’ll establish it ONCE in the abstract and then never say what XJFEFJDOSM or whatever stands for again so if ur like wait WHAT was that again u gotta scroll all the way back up and it’s a whole thing but I digress) and it has to do with WORLDBUILDING and FRAMING DEVICES and USE OF SECOND PERSON and only a little bit how if a character unironically says “innit” i automatically can’t take them seriously. Anyway it’s stuck in my head so you know I had to make it your problem. Also I’m putting this under a read more bc fjsdjlks holy shit this is gonna get LONG and RAMBLY and D E E P L Y nerdy
WORLDBUILDING, FRAMING DEVICES, AND (THE USE OF) YOU IN MANGUS AND NIGHTVALE
Part A: whose universe is it anyway? Welcome to horror where the lore is made up and the logic doesnt matter
so I am not the first or last to compare (/maybe wanna crossover a little) the worlds of
wtnv (welcome to nightvale) and TMA and like for good reason bc in many ways they feel very similar but in TMA it’s like What the FUCK is going on with all of these horrors and nightmarish scenarios I am FREAKED out where as WTNV treats it’s horrors as typically mundane which
A: plays into why when WTNV is like “remember how we’re a horror :)” it’s like OH SHIT bc if Jon Archivist is scared you’re like well yeah it’s scary out there but if CECIL PALMER, general attitude of a peppy cheerleader when facing terrors beyond imagination, is scared, you KNOW shit is FUCKED
B: isn’t entirely accurate, because I don’t actually feel like they are set in the same world. here’s where things get sticky when it comes to realities and whatnot but I do wanna stress that yes I know WTNV and TMA are both works of fictions BUT I would personally say that
TMA is set in a parallel universe: a reality that’s similar to our own but also distinctly separate from anything that we, the audience, can witness but never participate in
WTNV is set in a hidden universe: it is set in our (the listeners) own reality, and is done in such a way that it feels like if you looked hard enough for it or if you just had a bout of bad luck or if you happen to drive down a certain road in a long stretch of US desert (side note: if there’s any real life place nightvale would be set in it’s definitely new mexico have you ever been in new mexico it’s called land of ENCHANTMENT for a reason if I drove into new mexico and drove back out a few days later and like THIRTY YEARS had passed I’d be like yeah that tracks) that you could end up in the reality of nightvale. Who’s to say there’s not a faceless old woman secretly living in your house? Are you sure there’s nothing odd in your mirror? Who can ever be sure time is working correctly?
Which brings me to
Part B: You(yes, you!)’ve Been Framed!
Listen. I fucking love a good framing device. Every time a podcast is like “here’s why the events of the story are recorded in the world of the story” I go bonkers in yonkers that shit SLAPS. TMA and WTNV both do this, but (at least up to ep 176 of TMA, this whole fuckin essay could still be blown out the water) TMA’s framing device doesn’t account for an audience, where as WTNV’s the audience is a core component
the framing device of TMA is that these spooky stories are being recorded by an archivist in order to have an audio version of written statements. Cool! It tells the audience why these recordings exist, and why they’re episodic. Later in the story, the tapes begin to spontaneously show up because of Spooky Reasons that have yet to be Fully Revealed, but it still isn’t for an audience. When Jon Archivist records these tapes, they’re basically being recorded for a Void. Yes, the tapes are originally for a potential researcher to listen to, but that ain’t you chief. You are not part of the narrative (so far at least! Again, maybe the audience will be brought into the story when it’s revealed What’s Up with the spontaneous tapes, but so far nah), there’s no in universe explanation for why you personally are listening to these stories. You aren’t present in the story, in the framing device, so you are not a part of that world.
The framing device of WTNV is that you are tuning into the community radio of a small desert town, Nightvale, that you are a part of. After all, if you are tuning into something local, you’re strongly implied to be local. Thus, we have a framing device that explains both why it’s recorded AND why you’re listening. The audience is absolutely involved in the narrative rather than a simple spectator. Cecil Palmer is not recording into a Void, he’s talking to listeners of which you are a part of. (side note: this makes nightvale liveshows SUPER fun if u get an opportunity to go to one I HIGHLY recommend it bc while there’s not ‘audience participation’ in the classic sense of like magic or comedy acts the narrative IS constructed in a way that you feel less like a witness of a story and more of a participant like the one I went to most of us pulled our legs onto out chair bc oh SHIT maybe there IS an escaped librarian under your chair making a grab for your feet SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF IS FUN AS HELL YALL)
These framing devices are enforced and enhanced upon by who the “you” in a narrative is.
In TMA, when there’s a “you” being referred to, when there’s a listener, it’s usually an in universe character. When there’s lines like “i’m sorry, that’s not what you came here to listen to” it’s not referring to you personally, it’s talking to Jon Archivist or Gertrude Archivist or Insert Archival Assistant. When TMA does use a more general “you”, it’s still in universe rather than the external listening to audience. You can include yourself as part of that general you, but it’s not inherently built into the narrative. If you want to distance yourself, you can also do that. You are not automatically in this world, even if much of it feels repeatable and/or similar
WTNV sometimes uses you to refer to an in universe character, because conversations do happen, but in the episodes where it’s like LMAO THIS IS A HORROR, the “you” and general second person is actively both discussing a known character and the listener personally. One of the most recent episodes, ep 171 “Go to the Mirror?” is a BRILLIANT example of this, where Cecil is simultaneously discussing himself and his experiences AND you as well. There’s something he can only see in the mirror, something with such sharp claws, on his shoulders, but it’s also something you personally can only see in the mirror, something on your shoulder. You are not exempt from the story, you can’t be exempt from the story, because you’ve always been a part of it. (Also side note go to the mirror is SO fuckign good it made my heart fuckin POUND the amount of times that despite knowing it was fiction I looked over my shoulder so many times. I know a shit ton of people listened to WTNV in like 2012/13 and dropped off and felt guilty and never caught up again but like. Catch up on nightvale it’s good for body and soul and also Cecilos just keep winning)
WAY too long; didn’t read: to me personally while I LOVE both TMA and WTNV, WTNV is scarier to be because TMA feels like a story that you’re bearing witness to (also thank god british people aren’t real and were made up for the Peppa Pig Cinematic Universe), WTNV feels not just like a story that you could be in but actively already are and that makes things SPOOKY
Also this isn’t related to the essay but shout out to whoever first decided that horror narrators should have nice even voices we really all be soothed by some grisly ass stories the amount of people that fall asleep to WTNV/TMA is WILD

dfgdfg i have..... a petermart story that dealt with the different flavor of loneliness they both had, half smut half genuine meta of both of them and theorization on the branching of an Entity & how their powers manifested in other people...
basically, peter thinks hes hot shit when it comes to loneliness but gets overwhelmed when martin accidentally projects his feelings abt *fic's plot stuff* on him, its fun stuff!

people either paint him like an absolute devil or an incompetent idiot and hes neither of them! hes an asshole who loves being an asshole but far from the worst monster in the show and he tried to do a clever scheme TWICE on his life and 1. while it was established that any of the rituals wouldnt work singularly the Silence was still a pretty clever attempt if it weren't for gertrude! and 2. well... he tried to manipulate someone petty and formerly supposed to be a web avatar, again not his fault, cant call him stupid for trying dfgdfg

listen, listen, i know it sounds like im woobifying her i Know it but reading the scraps of her story how can i Not feel sorry for her? when the story framed her very similar to jon? the supernatural childhood encounter that gave them arachnophobia and the subsequential joining with an Entity against her will? the fact that both the story and the fans treat her like a spider woman always sat very very bad to me, and the fact that the story itself always framed her like a villain (considering All The Other Characters that get the benefit of the doubt) was extremely disappointing

i absolutely agree with you that i want more content of the album characters but i think comparing content with the band to rpf is a little far
Fair enough. I think the more I think about it, there's a lot more cases where it doesn't feel like that than ones where it seems borderline, and that's probably from a bit of old confused holdover in me from when I knew less about their lore, and assumed you weren't really supposed to pay attention to the bandmembers except as a framing device. It doesn't help that two of them kept their real first names for their characters (Which was fun for TMA too, thanks Jonathan Simathan), which means I parsed them and the rest as edgy author inserts. Maybe RPF isn't the right word...
I think it's like... Yes, they're actors in this situation, but there's also an underlying sense of "group of college friends with crimesonsas who hang out and play music" that I'm always at least little bit aware of when I see photoshoots or videos, which makes it sometimes weird to me when crewmembers get shipped together, or frustrating when people are being weird at the band. There's a greater level of detachment between when they're acting as the Aurora crew and when they're acting as, say, the HNOC characters, which feels more like they're in roles for a play. If that makes sense? But also you can tell some of them are very invested in their delightfully horrible immortal OCs, which is cool and I can get behind exploring all the interesting aspects and dynamics of these characters the same as I would somebody’s really rad D&D character. They can be quite compelling.
Idk. It's just a weird where-are-the-respectful-boundaries Issue that sometimes sticks in my brain and I haven't totally figured out how to deal with yet, because the structure of the source material for this fandom is unlike anything I've ever been in a fandom for before so I don't really have a clear point of reference

Territory fanbase analysis done while I was on run
There is a LOT of overlap; stanning the Territory is a package deal because they interact and talk about each other so much, and all their fanfacing accounts aside from their individual streams are collective. There ARE specializations though
The Territory fanbase is generally a little controversial but Clockwork takes it to the next level. Clockwork has dedicated factions of stans and anti-stans and in true him fashion practically no one has middle ground opinions on him. His stans tend to be either devout Mekhanites or people who are just deeply invested and they either have half the fanbase blocked or half the fanbase has blocked them
Nazarene stans, much like the fans of Philza Minecraft, tend to overestimate the parenting capability of their chosen streamer. A good chunk of them are religiously disillusioned including a large faction of ex-Catholics, but a lot are just here because Mom :) [Nazarene commits a war crime]
Milkshake stans produce edgy content and villain AUs like no other group in the streamer fandom, not in small part because Milkshake encourages and frequently sanctions harmless edge content. Lots of Violence memes are shared
Dragons stans all either had a politics and/or history Neurodivergent Interest of some vein, play D&D, are only prevented from playing D&D by the lack of an immediate group to play with, care a little too much parasocially about the interactions between their favorite streamers, or some combination of the above
Gun stans are a very small demographic but they tend to be somewhat annoyingly technical in terms of PvP
Cowboy inexplicably attracts a large demographic of hopeless romantics. 90% of Cowboy stans can be at least partially described by Tender Yearning Mitski Hozier. The other 10% are solely there for trickshots
Every single Teeth stan listens to weird indie music and has a scenecore/webcore/weirdcore/etc aesthetic

The Territory has a sort of “oh fuck we’re leadership now... these are our followers we have to take care of them” relationship with their fanbase and they’re trying very hard. They try not to encourage the parasocial aspects too much (they categorically refuse to interact with fanfic publicly, interact with the fanbase solely on their collective account, etc) and frequently address bad shit that ends up cropping up infanbase
They do charity drives/streams semi-regularly
They sanction fanart a lot, also. Like a Lot a lot
It is an anticringe safe haven (related to the above point)

Show: Dirk Gently. I’ve never seen Pushing Daisies, though I know it’s exactly the sort of series I’d love. But I’m currently on an umpteenth rewatch of DG and am right in the midst of remembering how much I enjoyed it the first time.
Character: That’s such a hard one! Sasha, but I’ll be honest, it’s now been so so long since I listened to S1 that I remember very little of OG!Sasha (aside from the calliope scene, and her run in with Michael - S5′s stapling scene caught me by joyful surprise).
I like what they did with Tim’s character in show to develop him and his arc what with Danny and the Circus, although I do feel that what with the glimpses we were given of Sasha, they would have gone a different direction with that, and the Unknowing would have maybe played out differently (not broad strokes of course, but in the details). If the VA for Sasha had been able to stay, I’d have been interested to see some of those glimpses come into play - Sasha’s background in Artefact Storage, the fact that as a (lowercase a) archivist, she’s notably more qualified and the idea that Gertrude intended her to be Archivist - even, actually, thinking about it, the whole juicy narrative foil potential of if OG!Sasha had survived S1, her and Jon would have been on an equal footing of encounters (Jon’s Web/Corruption, compared to her Spiral/Stranger).
Pairing: Why do you do this to me? xD
I’m going to say Jon/Martin, more for personal and biased reasons - I’ve been writing TMA relatively consistently since May of last year, and including crossovers, I’ve written 61 fics for them. Writing within the universe itself has taught me that I like writing horror (I really like writing horror!) and the fandom itself has been nothing but kind and supportive. Writing the characters, particularly Martin, has allowed me to explore a lot of themes and concerns at my own pace, and (without getting overly personal) has helped me work through a few things I don’t think I would have had the chance to with characters like Aziraphale and Crowley - who, yes, 100% are very human characters, but are still at a slight disconnect from everyone else by virtue of the fact they’re otherworldly beings.

A Magnus Archives Playlist
Inspired in part by @kimabutch and their fandom playlist project, I decided that I’d try to make a playlist with one song for each of the entities and after a LOT OF sifting through my collection it’s finally done!

So when I started this project, I set myself the limits that the songs had to a) already be in my collection b) all generally fit in the same genre c) should be new songs from lesser known or less currently popular bands so that the palylist could serve as an introdction d) no repeat bands . I have a lot of southern gothic and swing music that’d fit different entities but I wanted the list to be cohesive. I might create another playlist with those songs in a sort of “acoustic remix” at a later date, depending on how this one is received. I also could have pumped this full of Lemon Demon, but that’d be cheating.
The Eye- Fear & Delight: Early on when constructing the playlist it was obvious that since I was choosing the songs out of my own collection, I’d be making a showcase of what each of the fears mean to me, and what I find appealing about them. It follows then that the first song in the playlist is both the central theme of The Magnus Archives and the feeling which most resounds with me: the manic desire to know, no matter the danger or cost. A song about a headlong charge the horrifying and the unknown couldn’t be more on the nose.
The Corruption-Feather, Fur & Fin: It’s tough to find upbeat songs about bugs and rot, but I recalled an old “earworm” of mine happened to be about pollution and it fit perfectly.
The Buried- Repeat After Me: Playing with the buried’s dual theme of restraint and comfort, I thought a song about religious conformity was the best fit. This also starts a mini-arc over the next three songs where I (completely accidentally) relate coming into contact with the Entities to escaping from Plato’s cave.
The Dark- Dr. Sunshine is Dead: From the conformity and mental constriction of Repeat after me, our doubt and frustration leads to bold and heretical new thoughts. Obedience has been replaced with a self-sufficient blind faith, and the Avatar can escape from the constraints of normalcy to seek the exit of the cave.
The Vast- Always Ascending: While the falling titan might not be MY patron, I’ve always been in awe of the world from a bird’s eye view and so the vast’s song on this playlist might be a bit more positive than some others. Here we ascend from the cave full of the promise of more knowledge and the exultant feeling of leaving reality behind.
The Spiral-House of Glass: This is pretty much a Michael theme song more than any of my own ideas about the Spiral tbh. Having communed with their patron the Avatar has lost all tether on the normal world and becomes increasingly unstable.
The Lonely-Everything is Going Great: Now we get personal. I’ve struggled with depression for most of my life, and it’s taken a lot of different forms. In my late 20s as I pulled myself out of the pit and finally reconnected with people it shifted into a desire to sacrifice myself for the convenience and approval of others .I found this song around the same time I saw a post “ you’re so traumatized you think not taking up space in people’s lives is a redeeming feature” and the two have been forever linked in my mind.
The Stranger- I Want to be You: Growing up neruodivergent I always had the impression that I was wrong, that I was unwanted, and that I wasn’t really human. I envied people who were beloved for their talents and I wished I could emulate them. Needless to say the Stranger’s joyful jig of alienation held a lot of appeal and thanks to that it’s tied with the Eye for personal patron status.
The Web-Know my Name: Another character song, the incidious influence of the spider creeps in everywhere, and the slightest bit of contact can get you stuck. ALSO, I’ll take any excuse to put SATE on a playlist, they’re rad as hell.
The Desolation-Take me Home: I think this song speaks for itself, burning yourself out for a triumphant moment is totally within the lightless flame’s wheelhouse and I think that a brush with the sublime and destruction can sometimes go hand in hand.
The Hunt -Howl: Its a song that’s got big sexy werewolf energy, what’s not to love? Also check out the music video
The Slaughter-Mary: Second of what I like to call the “Blood,Meat, and Sharp Things” trinity of Terrors, differentiating between the three of them musically was quite difficult. I decided to eventually go with thes three because they communicated the three differing factors of the entities chase and pursuit/banality to violence/hunger and its relation with the human body.
The Flesh-The Devil in Camp: I know it might be considered cheating to use a song from a Donner party concept album when there was a TMA episode specifically about those sort of circumstances, but this is too much of a bop to resist. You should also check out the band if the idea of a “Donner party concept album” appeals to you, they do not disappoint.
The End-Hazy Shade of Winter: It’s only right that the end come at the end of the 14, so why not have the lead singer of everyone’s favorite emo band sing a song about reminiscence and finality.
The Extinction- The Church of the Technochrist: Blasphemies of blasphemies, a 15th song? Well the extinction is ALL ABOUT upsetting the natural order of things, and a song about overcoming mortal fears by embracing the inhuman future I think is the perfect anthem for the Millennial™ entity.
