Reasons why Bring on the Monsters from The Lightning Theif musical is an amazing song:
1.) "There's gonna be a fight. There still might be a war. For a moment, we've got danger on the run." Talk about setting the tone. We're in the clear as of today, but something is coming. Something bad.
2.) "Feeling ready🌊" "Feeling stoked🦉" "Feeling quesy🐐". Love how they gave Annabeth the 'feeling stoked' line. Because, of course, she's waiting in the wings, ready to kick ass when need. But it's also hilarious that the actress playing Annabeth is Kristen Stokes. So, I just imagine the writers gave her that line to mess with her.
3.) "Bring on the monsters. Bring on the real world." Like, yeah. They physically spent the majority of this musical in the real world, but they were disconnected from it. The three of them singing this line is a declaration of unity between their human and godly side. They are neither here nor there, not bound to one world, but exist in both.
4.) "They'll be times when your faith is shaken." Yes, your faith in the gods will be on the brink of breaking at any given moment. But so will the faith in yourself. But sometimes, being a demigod means doing it scared. But you won't go it alone.
5.) "Gotta know where the real fight lies when it's time to rise and stand your ground." Annabeth and Clarisse singing about knowing which battles are worth fighting and when is utterly amazing. Because not only are they both children of war gods, but they also canonically struggled with being strong-willed and prideful. It's like even though were at odds at the beginning of the musical, they aren't as different as they first appear.
6.) "No, I'm never gonna once have it easy. I'll make mistakes, but my own, and it frees me." In TLT, Book!Sally says something along the lines of: 'If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself.' This is as applicable to a demigod as it is to a mortal. And it's bittersweet because not every demigod gets the chance to choose. Or rather, they don't choose wisely because they're so spiteful when it comes time. But sometimes, you gotta let the anger fade and move forward.
7.) "I'll be back next summer. You'll see me again. I'll be back next summer. I'll survive 'till then." There's something about this line that makes me want to cry. Percy started this musical saying he didn't want to be a half-blood, essentially rejecting the idea of a demigod, but ends the musical declaring his eventual return. He isn't saying goodbye, but a see you later. Which just tugs at my heart strings knowing we'll never get a second musical, but it's okay because Percy's essence extends beyond the Broadway medium. Whether it be a book, musical, movie, or graphic novel, Percy will always be back.
8.) Also, if you listen to the instrumental of this song, the guitar riff at the very end is playing the same melody of 'I didn't wanna to be a half-blood' underneath Percy's declaration of unwavering loyalty to demigods. And it broke me like a bone.
You guys remember these? That's great because I didn't. It just occurred to me that I never finished my analysis of the TLT musical, and I thought I'd get on that. Anyway, this song is fucking incredible, and I want a SOM musical. But I digress.

I realized I should say this first before my actual thoughts on the book; Please send me your favorite fanworks! Music, art, anamatics, fics (especially those), you name it! I'm ready for everything and immune to spoilers, and I'm getting this way before uA! Hahahahahahahahahahahaahhaahahahahahahahahhaahahah!!!!!!!!
So: Nona.
Certainly the one with the biggest, most fundamental, and most annoying flaws; slow pacing, too many characters with too little personality, convoluted plot (I still understand nothing about the convoy). And yet the highs were not just the highest of the series, but *21st century literature*. Seriously, the moment Nona clicked felt like turning the page and seeing the imprint of Tamsyn Muir having ripped her heart out and pounded it, still beating, into the page. And may I remind you, *I'm* using the *audiobook*!
Man, I *really* disrespected this series. Like in hindsight without my lenses there is genuinely not one TLT character that accurately maps onto any one Homestuck character, and TSG has just fuckall to do with anything, but I'm a fucking jackass who wants to feel like she knows everything.
On a similar note, *not YA*. I am a moron and should not be listened to. This series is not appropriate if you are under sixteen. Certainly I don't really think you'll *get* it.
Interesting that John is, at once, environmental destruction, death, child predation, imperialism, and religion, but not really actually *patriarchy*, and *explicitly not* capitalism. I'm the kind of person to be grateful for that last bit, even if it does seem out of place with the whole ethos, but really, am I just missing a dimension or should there be more gender commentary? I guess maybe it's an AFAB thing I'm too non-passing to have any social understanding of what Muir's trying to say.
EDIT: REDDIT EXPLAINED EVERYTHING I WAS MISSING TO ME, VERY SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY, BECAUSE I'M GENUINELY A STUPID PERSON.
Anywho, I don't have great confidence in Alecto-that is to say, in the idea that it will come next. I'm almost certain, in fact, that what would once have been Act 2 of Alecto will *also* be spun into its own book, to be released no sooner than 2025 and no later than 2030, and that this will be a 5-book series; I know not whether 4 or 5 will be Alecto, but the other will definitely be Kiriona. I'm willing to put good money on this. I'm not really willing to make any predictions beyond this-I might honestly jinx it if I do.
(Also John was wrong and the rich folks were 100% going to take everyone in later waves.)
So, yeah. Thank you for everyone who read along with me; I'm going to do The Unwanted Guest next, and after that, I'm thinking either Lolita or the Torah and Gospels, then the other, then The Magician's Apprentice, then a reread.
Oh, and I can finally actually subscribe to the fucking tags! Wooooohooooo!
Let's hope none of the talented people have blocked me.

Shuffle your favorite playlist and post the first five songs that come up. Then copy/paste this ask to your favorite mutuals. 💌
I am always adding enrichment (new music) to my enclosure (main playlist), and this is one of the most recent additions. I'm not sure if it'll get to stay yet - I like a good fairy tale reference, and the music has a nice swing to it, but I'm the lyrics haven't fully convinced me.
GIDEON NAV. Discovered this song through a TLT playlist, so it'll forever be about my favorite ginger who wants to be this self-assured sooooo badly but doesn't know how to talk to strangers.
FUN. Bonus fun because I learned about it in a class on participatory culture.
Burn The Ballroom my beloved! One day I'll finish and share that Villainous Thing School of Good and Evil music video and it'll be over for all of us.
Waltz No. 2 gets all the recognition in the Dark Academia playlists which is FAIR because it's gorgeous but hello? Waltz No. 1? Lyric Waltz? They're all excellent and I crave variety
And that's five! Idk if I was supposed to give commentary but you can't really expect me not to. My playlists are a strictly curated place of beloved tunes and I always want to talk about them :D

Reasons why The Campfire Song from The Lightning Theif musical is an amazing song:
1.) "It's not enough that they're omnipotent and all powerful. They need to feel appreciated." I love that Luke is the one who is outwardly expressing his resentment to the gods, like in the books. I consider this foreshadowing lol. Also, this line sets up the narrative that the gods always know when demigods are talking about them, and the song is literally all of the demigods shitting on the gods as parents, which is hilarious.
2.) "I met the guy once and once was enough! Annabeth?" I enjoy that right after Luke talks about how he never again wants to meet his dad, Luke is the one to get the 'I resent my godly parent' ball rolling and immediately encourages Annabeth to do the same. I've recently been interpreting this as Luke subtly manipulating Annabeth, which isn't too far off from what happens in the book.
3.) "Chiron! Who's your dad?" "Oh, well, my father is Kronos. Remember my lecture: he ate his children." I love how Chiron doesn't even sing a verse, but more so a couple of lines to mock the song, as if it's absurd of him to prove that his father, fucking Kronos, is bad, which is hilarious. But you can also interpret this as him just being like 'my father ate me when I was newborn🤪🤪" and that's equally as hilarious lmao
4.) "If I tried to sing, it'll probably cause an avalanche." QUOTE FROM THE BOOK! PUT SOME RESPECT ON THE CREATORS OF THIS MUSICAL!
5.) "So, my dad is some God. That's great, I guess😒" Percy is so unbothered by the fact that he is literally the descendant of a god. like, he had a huger reaction to Chiron being a centaur lol
6.) "But I don't care where our parents may be. As long as you are here with me!" I think this line is so sweet because these kids safe haven is not just the camp, but each other. No matter what, they got eachother's back and I love that for them. But this line becomes a bit complicated because Luke is the one singing, and we know that he eventually revolts against the gods. it's just sad because that part of Luke that wants to have camp as a support system never left him, I don't think, it's just that he went about finding a support system and avenging the lives of these demigods in an awful way.
This song is cute and funny and it'll break your heart is you let it lol

Reasons why Son of Poseidon from The Lightning Thief musical is an amazing song:
1.) “What belongs to the sea can always return.” I don’t remember if this was an actual quote from the book, but it is a damn good one. Percy having the seashell from the very beginning and using it to return to the ocean later on is so cool. It’s almost like Poseidon knew they’d have to face Ares. Also, Poseidon giving Percy a seashell in the musical has the same energy as Poseidon giving Percy a sand dollar in the books lol
2.) “And I know right now things are less than fine, but I think my dad may have thrown me a line.” The water-related puns are very Poseidon-coded, which it makes sense being that Percy is his son.
3.) “And better late than never to finally get a sign!” And then the call back to ‘Their Sign’ from earlier in the musical!
4.) “Who wins if the gods go to war? Ares, the god of war.” I remember being taken aback by this plot twist when I read it for the first time, and it hits just as hard in the musical. I think some people in the fandom forget that Percy Jackson has always been incredibly observant, emotionally intuitive, and intelligent, and moments like this remind us of that.
5.) “Well, he’ll have to get through me! We’ll take him down. We work well in three.” “Plus, a half-goat with a great goatee. Let’s do this!” I love how even when Percy is being a bit reckless and impulsive, his friends still got his back. Also, I’m just now realizing that ‘goatee’ was a pun lol
6.) “You’re the two best friends this screw-up ever had.” And then Percy returning the sentiment by labeling them his best friends is all I really need. I love this trio!
7.) “You may be a god, but you’re going down all the same!” Leave it to Percy to disrespect a god to their face when he knows the god doesn’t deserve it. Sally raised him right.
8.) “Your meat is minced. I’m here to mince it.” And then having Ares sing about an action already taking place before he performs the action just like Clarisse did in ‘Put You in Your Place’ is an interesting way to shine a light on how similar children of Ares can be to their godly parent.
9.) “You think the god of war is afraid of a little water?!” “How do you feel about a lot of it?” Percy coming up with witty comebacks that will either make the situation worse or turn the tide in his favor is so in alignment with his character, and I love the writers' attention to that detail.
10.) “I’m the son of Poseidon. I never asked to be, but I’m the son of Poseidon. Now, face the tide inside me!” I feel like this song, particularly, this moment, is a callback to his first line in the musical/books: Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood. Percy has come to terms with what his life is, and is starting to accept it. We love to see character growth.
If it isn’t abundantly clear already, I love this song. I love that the trio has clearly grown from constantly fighting in ‘Lost’ to having each other's back in this song. I love the Ares-Clarisse similarities. I love Ares’ singing voice. I love the Sally and Hades cameo. I love it all.

Reasons why Drive from The Lightning Theif is an amazing song:
1.) "All your worries come in flurries, but we bested freakin' furries! Look how far we've come. We can't give in." I love how this song is mainly Grover being moral support for his two friends, which is so sweet, in-character, and in alignment with his motivation for being on this quest. Not only does he want to wash his hands of past mistakes, but he wants to protect Percy and Annabeth, whether that be from monsters with the intent to kill, or internal doubt of their abilities. He's such an amazing character and friend. We stan Grover.
2.) "Look, the Gateway Arch!" "Look, a lady with a puppy!" Yes, if course, Annabeth is immediately in love with national monuments, and Percy is captivated by a cute doggy. I just love them both and their little characteristics. I also love how they sneak in the whole 'blew up a national monument and got poisoned' part of the book.
3.) "We urge all citizens to stay off the road, and don't-" "Drive! Just drive!" I love how we know that they're on a quest to return to Zeus his master bolt and save Sally's soul from the underworld, but to the mortals, these three are just breaking every rule all of the time in the funniest way.
4.) "If you hadn't bought all those dam snacks-!" "Uh, it was the Hoover Dam, and I was hungry!" I love how they even reference books that they won't cover in the musical, and they did it in the right way, unlike the Sea of Monsters movie that introduced Kronos in second story of the franchise.
5.) "Why, my brother and I arrived just yesterday: May 1st...1939!" This is what I'm talking about. They creators of this musical even squeezed in a Bianca and Nico Di Angelo cameo in this song and they did it in such an amazing way.
6.) "The oracle can can it! I'll save my mom and save the planet!" I love how this remains Percy's energy throughout the books. Like, it doesn't matter what you tell him, his mind is set on saving the people he cares about and saving the world in the process if he needs to. His loyalty is a blessing (though it can bring about his demise if taken too far).
7.) "Oh, look, a bus to Los Angeles." "Are you sure that's a good idea?" "This one we just wont blow up." "Ha!" And their banter as a team and a group of friends???? I love the writers and creators of this musical. Top tier content.
I wasn't expecting this review to be so long, but I'm not mad. Drive is such a good song, and I hope it gets the attention it deserves!

Reasons why The Last Day of Summer from The Lightning Thief musical is an amazing song:
1.) “What do you do when it’s up to you to choose: has something ended or begun?”  It’s the end of the book, the musical, but Percy has to decide if this is the end of his story. This line does an amazing job at explaining Percy’s dilemma.
2.) “Do I stay because it’s safer? Back to the home I left behind. I could stay and train for a peace of the action, but what about peace of mind?” In Good Kid, Percy complains that no has ever asked him if he’d like to come around and stay, but in The Last Day of Summer, the camp directors are asking him exactly that - and he doesn’t have answer. Being a year-round camper allows Percy to strengthen his skillset as a demigod so he can better prepare for a world of monsters, but it requires him to sacrifice the chance to lead a somewhat normal life. I find it admirable that even though he has begun to embrace his godly side, he still has a grasp on his humanity.
3.) “Perry Johannsson, this means you.” I love this gag that Mr. D deliberately choose to say Percy’s name wrong the entire musical, and also the entire five book series.
4.) “Sometimes, family is worth the trouble. Believe me.” “I guess we both have a choice to make, Seaweed Brain.” I love the contrast between that moment in Killer Quest when Annabeth calls Percy Seaweed Brain in an attempt to insult him versus in The Last Day of Summer when it becomes almost a mockery of their initial rivalry. Here, Annabeth acknowledges their rocky start, but chooses to not let it define the future of their friendship, and I love that for them. Additionally, Annabeth lets her guard down and briefly confides in Percy, which goes to show that she has begun to trust him and, more so, heed his advice. Their friendship is portrayed so beautifully.
5.) “Tough last day?” I’m really enjoy all of these callbacks we are getting in this song. When Luke ask Percy ‘Tough first day?’ in Their Sign, Luke has yet to decide if Percy will be a threat to his plan to overthrow the gods. Here, Luke knows Percy is a threat and intends on eliminating him.
6.) “You’re the lightning thief.” “The oracle warned you. ‘Betrayed by a friend.’” Percy saying the title of the show, and Luke quoting the line referring to his betrayal >>>>
7.) “I’ll do anything. I don’t care if I hurt anyone. It doesn’t pay to be a good kid, a good kid, a good son.” This line right here forces the listener to empathize with Luke. While we may not agree with the decision he makes, we understand why he makes them: because he was once was where Percy is.
8.) “Soon, you’ll see what I did.” Throughout the PJO series, we see Percy have resentment toward Luke for good reasons, but when Percy denies the gods offer in 'The Last Olympian', he, in a round-about way, defends Luke. Even as Percy grows older, he understands Luke’s stance toward the gods and the shitty system they created of sending their kids off to do their bidding. Luke was right. In time, Percy would soon see what he did and why he did it.
The Last Day of Summer is such a beautiful song. The callback to previous songs in the musical, Annabeth and Percy becoming good friends, Luke’s reprise of Good Kid, the foreshadowing that Percy will grow up to understand why Luke is doing what he’s doing. Just, everything about it is so amazing!

Reasons why My Grand Plan from The Lightning Theif Musical is an amazing song:
1.) "If you don't go, you'll never know if you'll ever be good enough." She wants to go on every quest to prove that she is good enough because, as a child, she was never "good enough" for her mortal family. They neglected, ignored, and belittled her so much so that even though she's away from that environment, she feels the need to prove herself worthy of remembrance. like, sweetheart, you were already deserving of all things good. you musn't dwell on the opinions of the shitty people in your life.
2.) "Always been a tough girl, 'cause most girls never win if they're polite." I think it's safe to assume that Annabeth stumbled upon this lesson while on the run, before she met Thalia and Luke - and, I don't think the books specified on how long Annabeth was on her own before them. I can't imagine being seven years old and having to find yourself food, shelter, and a place to sleep. I doubt asking nicely got her anywhere, so she had to resort to more intense, manipulative, and violent acts to get by, and that's just so heartbreaking. I have no doubt that even as a seventeen-year-old, she still carries this lesson, amongst many others, with her.
3.) "And someday soon, the world will notice me." I think it's important to note that in the first chorus, she dreams of someone noticing her, but now that hope expands into the entire world noticing her. It's safe to assume her desire to be remembered only strengthen with time, and I think it's amazing that the writers shined a light on it.
4.) "And your stepmom treats you like some freak. And your dad won't give you the time of day. And your mom won't trust you with a quest. So, the best thing you can do is runaway." There are not enough words in any language to express the heart ache and anger that I feel on behalf of Annabeth. I will never understand how Annabeth, even though it's her choice and I respect it, even forgave her mortal family for all of this. This is abuse, and I will defend this girl with my life.
5.) "And someday soon, I swear. I don't know how or when, but I promise you, I'll never be invisible again. Someone will notice me." I am so happy that we can say that Annabeth Chase, indeed, achieved her grand plan of being remembered. She deserves it so much and I hope the rest of her life goes the way she hopes it does.
6.) I also feel the need to add this post here. It goes along with the topic of the song, and, I think, capitalizes on the important role Percy plays in her life. Just felt it was worth mentioning!
Is it clear that I love Annabeth? I think she's legit becoming my favorite character out of the book series. Like, I feel like the fandom often portrays her as this intense, badass warrior, and she is, but often forget to remember why she is that way, you know? Anyway, we stan.

Reasons why Lost The Lightning Theif musical is amazing:
1.) "Hades is sending his monsters after us. We're doing something right." This is such amazing insight from Annabeth, and it goes criminally overlooked. We stan the daughter of Athena.
2.) "What did it say?" "Take that bus to Los Angeles." "We're not on the bus." "I know. (to Los Angeles 🐐)" "We blew up the bus!" "I know!(to Los Angeles 🐐)" I love how this is the way they depict the trio: Percy and Annabeth mid-argument on a dangerous quest while Grover is getting a word in when he can lmao.
3.) "Dude, like, listen, please. Half-bloods, to monsters, smell like Mickey D's.🐐" "We smell?!" "Like tacos, or takeout Vietnamese.🐐" Gover, you are freaking this boy out, and it is the funniest shit. Imagine you're on a quest and the way you find out that the monsters you have to fight want to eat you is by your best friend, who is half-goat, telling you that you, to monsters, smell like a happy meal. I'd give up.
4.) "Dude, are you talking to a squirrel?" "Satyr powers...Maybe he can help us." "Really, 'cause I think that seems kind of nuts." Percy, you little shit. This is why we love you.
5.) "You hurt his feelings. Tell the squirrel you're sorry." "I'm not saying sorry to a squirrel." "He's very sorry. Tell the squirrel you're sorry, Percy." this entire interaction makes me love the musical even more because the writers didn't even need to include this, but they did, and I'm so happy.
6.) "Hungry monsters on the ground." "Angry gods are in the sky." "No safe places to be found." "Wanna run! Wanna cry!" These lyrics are so good. It really shines a light on how unfathomably terrifying quest are.
7.) "Can't go back to any home." "Camp is way too far away." "Can't protect my only friends." And, right here, is what each character longs for: Percy wanting a safe place to stay because he's never had one, Annabeth wanting to be at camp because it's the only home she's ever known, and Grover wanting to keep his friends safe because he can't let another half-blood die. These lines won over my heart.
8.) "We're lost. We're just kids. We're alone." And then you remember that, with the exception of Grover, these are literal children who are expected to return Zeus's lightning bolt and save a mortal soul before the world ends. These are impossible stakes, and these kids are forced to handle them. The gods continue to disappoint me.
9.) "Children, come inside!" And then they have to face Medusa??? Fuck that. I want them safe😤😤
Lost is such an amazing song! It really highlights the trio's dynamic is an interesting way, and I highly recommend a listen to this one as well.

Reasons why D.O.A. from The Lightning Thief musical is an amazing song:
1.) “Seen plenty of people all over the years, from heroes to half-bloods with their pitiful tears...” I love how Charon makes a distinction between heroes and half-bloods, as if being a half-blood is merely a laminated nametag rather than something of which to give these kids courage to continue fighting. It’s such a sneaky way to get into their heads, so sneaky that I didn’t realize it until recently.
2.) “What do you think of my song?” I love how this entire musical number doesn’t exists in the same realm as the rest of the songs in this musical. It only exists because Charon wanted to show these kids a song they wrote. The creators of this musical didn’t have to write this song into the story this way, but I’m glad they did.
3.) “And if the dead complain, I just turn up the stereo.” I love how they way Charon deals with problems at work is to drown them out with music. How relatable lol
4.) “Who has two turntables and three sick heads? Everybody give it up for D.J. Cerberus!” This sequence feels like a fever dream. You mean to tell me the guard dog of the underworld knows how to D.J.? Who the hell taught Cerberus that? And how large would the turntable need to be?
5.) “You ain’t ever gonna save what matters. You ain’t gonna protect your friends. You ain’t ever gonna be remembered.” And then we leave the realm of comedic relief and remember why these kids had come all of this way in the first place. This is the moment of truth, and Charon is telling these kids that they won’t make it out alive. I wonder how they’ll get out of this predicament.
I seriously enjoy this song and Charon as a character. The music, the lyrics, and the energy is nothing like I’ve heard before, and I am so glad it’s in a musical about a twelve-year-old, son of a sea god, destined to destroy or save the world.

Reasons why The Tree on the Hill from The Lightning Thief musical is an amazing song:
1.) “And no one at camp is safe until we can see the tree on the hill.” How abysmal is it that a demigods life is so dangerous that the only haven they have is a summer camp in Manhattan, New York?
2.) “I thought I was the only kid of The Big Three gods.” “You are now.” Up until this point of the story, the audience is led to believe that Percy is the only kid of the Big Three gods in ages. Come to find out, there was a child of the Big Three gods that lived before him, but she died protecting her friends. Not only does it make the audience scared for Percy and his future, but it makes us scared for all demigods. The musical portrays this beautifully.
3.) “And maybe if I’d been a little bit braver, maybe if I stayed behind to fight, but ‘maybe’ doesn’t let me go back and save her. ‘Maybe’ doesn’t make it alright.” As Grover sings these lines, I think back to that scene when Percy insists on avenging his mom and fighting the minotaur, and Grover pleads with him to reach the border. He must have known surviving a fight with a minotaur, especially as a untrained demigod, meant a slim chance of survival, yet he watched his friend swallow his fear and fight anyway, probably reminding him of another demigod he knew. This had to have been incredibly traumatic for Grover to relive his darkest moments.
4.) “As she died, he turned her into a tree so she could stand protecting us, forever.” How is it that even in her dying moments, her father still assigned her a task? I don’t mean to ruin the sentiment of this line, but it makes me wonder if the gods really do care about their children, or if they see them as chess pieces. At least Thalia’s a beacon of safety, for what it’s worth.
5.) “And it’s there reminding me of all I failed to be.” Grover is a protector. It is his job to find demigods and guide them to safety, and each time he succeeds, he has to face the tree that serves as a painful reminder of the one time he didn’t.
Not-so-fun fact: I already did a version of this post, but when I saved it to my drafts, it wasn’t there 😑 So, yippee.
Anyway, this song does an amazing job at highlighting Grover’s role in the story. He is such an important character in the series, and it’s a shame he wasn’t in the HOO series all that much.

Reasons why The Weirdest Dream (reprise) from The Lightning Thief musical is an amazing song:
1.) “This is strange. I think I must be dreaming. I’m in some kind of cavern, at least, that’s how it’s seeming. This is...scary.” I looooooove the ominous musical undertone of this section. The mood shift is immaculate and it really makes you want to lean forward from the edge of your seat and capture every detail. I forget the word, but the people in charge of composing, orchestrating, and playing the instrument did such an amazing job. Additionally, I love how the lyrics copy the melody of ‘The Minotaur/The Weirdest Dream’ but the lyrics themselves are different. A reprise, when done correctly, is sooooo gooood!
2.) “The bolt is on its way, my lord. Everything is unfolding as I- as we planned.” “You falter!” I genuinely love this exchange between Luke and Kronos. While we can all agree that Luke made some awful choices, he is also just as vulnerable and afraid as the rest of the demigods we meet. It just puts things into perspective that despite his narrow-minded and murderous nature, he is also a scared demigod who just wants recognition.
3.) “Remember what the gods have done. Remember Thalia.” And Kronos keeping Luke on a leash by throwing Thalia’s death in his face whenever he shows hesitation is something I never knew I needed to hear. Like, we know Luke uses the same trick on Annabeth in The Sea of Monsters, but it never occurred to me that Kronos may have done the same thing to Luke.
4.) “Wait. Someone is here, listening even as he dreams. Hello, Perseus Jackson.” I love how Kronos uses his full name, like he’s addressing this twelve-year-old by his title. And Luke is definitely in the room when Kronos says this, which would make the scene where Luke poisons Percy all the more interesting because Luke was in contact with Kronos even then, so Luke had to have known that Percy would be someone to keep an eye on.
At first, I didn’t want to review this song because it isn’t one of my favorites, but listening to it again made me appreciate it for the amazing song it is. I think this is the first time within the soundtrack, besides ‘Their Sign’ and ‘The Campfire Song’, that we get an insight into Luke’s narrative, and I think that it’s incredibly important. Plus, we get an early Kronos cameo, done correctly, unlike a certain movie. Speaking of which, I suppose I could do commentaries on both movies in the future, now that I think about it lmao

Reasons why Put You In Your Place from The Lightning Theif is an amazing song:
1.) "Prepare to be pulverized, newbie!" I can't remember if this is an actual quote from the book, but I feel like Clarisse definitely said this. also, what a great way to introduce a song and character ahhhhhh
2.) "You're gonna drown. You ain't gonna float." I saw someone point out how Sarah, the actress portraying Clarisse, sings a higher note on 'drown and a lower note on 'float', like how in Hamilton, King George III sing a lower note on 'rise' and a higher note on 'fall'. I just thought this concept was interesting and worth sharing. Plus, Sarah's singing voice is so amazing!!!! also, how funny is it that she told Percy that he'd drown lol
3.) "Don't worry. Athena always has a plan." ANNABETH 😫😫
4.) "Every demi has a special skill (special skill). Speed of brains, or the strength of will (strength of will)." I know it's literally just Chris singing back up vocals for Kristen, but it literally sounds like Percy hyping Annabeth up and it makes so much sense. Plus, the 'speed of brains or the strength of will' is not-so-subtly talking about percy's and annabeth's individual strength's and we love that lol
5.) "She could capture your heart. I'm gonna ca-ca-ca-ca-capture the flag!" I like how they have Clarisse be the first person to mention Percabeth's potential since it was Clarisse that interrupted Percabeth's kiss after the war. She totally ships it hahaha
6.) "Go to the boy's bathroom." "And?" "Stay there. It's your first day. We don't want you messing this up." Yeah...annabeth wasn't the nicest person to him at first, and I'm glad they acknowledge that. I also love how they combined capture the flag with the bathroom scene. real smart on their part.
7.) "Your goose is cooked. I'm here to cook it." how are you gonna re-cook and already cooked- you know what? nevermind, clarisse lol
8.) "You face a monster on your very first day? You lucky punk! Now, newbie, you're gonna pay!" here
9.) "I'll put you in your place!" and then percy becomes one with plumbing and puts clarisse in her place. love that.
I absolutely adore rock music, and a rock song just makes sense for capture the flag and for clarisse as a character. also, an annabeth cameo!!

Reasons why Killer Quest from The Lightning Theif musical is amazing:
1.) "My mom's gone." "From this world. But if she's anywhere, she's in the underworld." "I'll do it." Percy doesn't even hesitate. He's just willing to risk his life to get his mom back because he loves her. Percy and Sally are such an incredible mother/son duo!
2.) "You're my best friend, dude, so don't get mad, but I suspect you'll need protecting when things get bad." I love how Grover immediately decides to go with him. Sure, he also has his own reasons, but one of them is to protect his friend while they trek through the underworld. He is an amazing friend.
3.) "I'm finally gonna pass a test." 😂😂
4.) "You need me too, Seaweed Brain. If you're going to save the world, I'm the best person to keep you from messing up." I strongly admire Annabeth's determination in this part. Like, she straight up hijacked a quest so she can make something of herself while saving the world. what a badass.
5.) "We're going on an awesome--!" "--dangerous and scary--!" "--thrilling--!" "--monstrous--!" "--and hairy--!" and hairy?? this reminds of that Phineas and Ferb song when Candace says she'll change her name to Larry because she ran out of rhyme's lmao. why did Grover go with hairy?? I mean, was the quest hairy? how could it have been hairy???
I'm still stuck on that "hairy" part, but it's hilarious, so it's fine lol. Also, I really enjoy how all three of their motivations for going on this quest is sung in one song. Like, it successfully ends the first act, and it combines their motivations like they're all in this together, and they are!

Reasons why Good Kid from The Lightning Theif musical is amazing:
1.) "Be strong. I keep my head down. I keep my chin up..." Both lines in bold are from songs when the two adults in Percy's life, Sally (Be Strong) and Chiron (Their Sign), give him advice on how to move forward, and we see that Percy takes it to heart in his darkest moments. This part of the song really shows how much he respects and looks up to his mom and Chiron, and I loooove it so much.
2.) "I never try to do anything." This is so fucking true. Percy is often labeled as a trouble maker and that's not accurate because he doesn't make trouble, trouble follows him. Anytime he's broken a rule, with the exception of when he ruined his mom plates while practicing sword fighting or when he shot a canon at a school bus (this guy, I swear🤦🏾‍♀️), it has been because someone is in a desperate situation and he wants to help them. But as the gods would have it, every bad thing is pinned on him, and that has to ruin his self esteem. I'm so happy the creators of this musical touched on this, even for a brief moment.
3.) "The only family that really mattered, well, she vanished into the air." here.
4.) "And now I finally find a haven, someplace safe where I can stay, 'til it's pack your bags Percy..." This kid grew up in an abusive household and was practically bullied out of every school he attended and then he, after his mom is murdered, finds a haven, a place literally designed to keep him protected, only to be kicked out of because his uncle wrongfully accused him, a twelve year old, for stealing. This makes me wanna cry.
5.) "All you get are bad grades, and a bum rap, and a bad rep, and a good smack, and no friends, and no hope, and no mom...she's taken away." I really appreciate how after he says he has no hope, he lists his mom lasts, like his mom was the only thing left that kept him grounded...and she was. Correct me if I'm wrong, but after he fell of the gateway arch was the first time he had talked about his suicidal thoughts. I think it's safe to assume his mom gave him a reason to stay alive and after she died, he felt like he didn't have one anymore. It's just such a shitty situation and I am so glad the musical shined a spotlight on it.
6.) "All I need is one last chance to prove I'm good enough for someone." here.
I've been so excited to talk about this song and I finally got to it! Good Kid is such a well-written song and I strongly recommend a listen to it, as well as the whole musical!
