Rogue Speech - the Sky/Skulk Pidgin

One of the most common trade-speaks used before the Great Connection and one of the few tongues that intriguingly remained un-touched by the Connection, Rogue-Speech is the pidgin created between the Sky Kingdoms and the Skulks near them. With the forest clans being even more isolationist in the past (often refusing business with non-cats before the connection) and the tribes living on parts of the mountains that are difficult to reach (and often had isolation tendencies themselves); the Skies were the near sole progenitors of feline-speech within the pidgin.

Being that this variant of trade-speech originated from the Rising Moon and the Old Kingdom of the Shining Sun, much of the canine influence came of the Silverfeathers skulk. The modern version has long since created a minor dialectal difference of Eastern vs. Western where the Western version of the tongue contains more vocabulary and quirks from the Grand Packs while the Eastern holds the Skulks’ influence.

The sounds and the written expressions of them adhere closest to Sivake as it was the skies who reached out first and held onto the information though it was the Skulks who introduced the concept of formal writing to them. Here are the consonants;

As is standard for any pidgin, the hardest sound clusters from both languages were dropped. Because I’m still a bit new at this, I’m choosing to make that mean that the sounds that are either forbidden or are very different from the others are barred.

Part 2: Noun Class

Being that the pidgin is built from languages that all have noun classes, some are kept in this simplified version of it; the semi-animate is dropped from the skulks’ language, migrating everything important into the main two categories of animate and inanimate.

The markers from Sivake are used to confirm or deny animacy of a noun.

Part 3: Grammatical Number

The paucal wasn’t necessary for understandings to be made and it was easier to merely convey “one of a thing” vs. “many of a thing” before fluid communication was developed and so; only a singular/plural distinction exists now.

Part 4: Tense, Aspect and Mood

As talks became more fluid and grammar straightened out, tense and aspect became to be addressed within the pidgin. For once, it is the kingdoms whose system is a tad simpler; having mostly only a past/non-past distinction with one additional tense commonly called the historical added to it. One the skulks’ side of things, not only do they have a recent and distal past tense but they also have one dedicated to the future.

When the tenses were straightened out; the language adopted three tenses - past, present and future with both languages dropping their distal tenses.

As for the aspects, the kingdoms gracefully traded their iterative aspect (which they use more or less to mean “again” or “a lot”) for the skulks’ habitual while also retaining their momentane aspect. On the skulks’ end, they dropped their resumptive aspect.

It’s not a complex system - which is the goal - but the momentane is important to me. Anyway, let’s borrow sky-word for “to talk.”

And for my own entertainment, here’s the skulk’s word for “to talk, speak” in the chart.

Tacking onwards, the imperative mood is kept from Sivake -ro.

Part 5: Pronouns

This is where the most simplification comes in. The Skies were made to relinquish their grasp on their dependent pronouns; sticking only to the independent forms to smooth out communication. In addition; the divine pronouns never made to this pidgin as there was never any reason to use it in casual conversation and would only serve to make future communication more confusion and difficult if they were forcefully inserted. On top of that; Sivake also gave up their paucal pronouns to match the fact that they dropped it as a grammatical number leaving a rather concise handful of pronouns as a base:

The only moderately complex thing about this wonderfully concise collection of pronouns is that the skulks’ inclusion of animacy on their own pronouns invaded these. When not speaking in first person, it’s common for the animacy agreement markers to be tagged to the ends of pronouns. While not exactly expected for second person, it’s considered mandatory on third-person pronouns.

The Skies weren’t the only ones making sacrifices regarding their referrals to others - the titles of the Skulks were imported but they were drastically condensed with some of their sounds changed to better fit the current sound-bank.

Tora - fighter, gladiator

Keshuma - matron, patron, nurse

Kiva - kit, youngling

The speakers of the Skies are known to modify these terms with gender based attachments to add specification.

Part 6: Articles and Demonstratives

The articles and demonstratives are exempt from noun class agreement. The articles follow the Sky Kingdom’s association with only having a definite articles while leaving any indefinite articles unmarked.

Plural Definite - Ba

The demonstratives on the other hand come from Kujhikoslan which has only a near/far distinction.

Near Demonstrative - Yel

Far Demonstrative - Sul

Final Note

Given that a vast majority of the talking was done by the Skies, the majority of the vocabulary for this pidgin turned creole is from Sivake albeit sometimes important words were replaced by the Kujhikoslan words when the Sky translation left them as unimportant. This is mostly apparent in words for birds and things related to them given their spiritual significance in the religion of the marrowed skulks.

Sending via Tumblr rather than commenting on the fic itself; I watched mamma mia again recently and was unfairly compelled to return to this one remarkable fic called darling that *gets me* and satisfies all the narrative fictional needs the 100 left me with.

I'm so grateful to you for not only writing it, but writing it so wonderfully.

That the more I reread it instead of reading the news for self soothing, the more I analyze it and disagree with my own earlier, frankly exuberant to the point of dumb comments.

So I'ma just talk @ you about your work here where it feels less weird and contradictory for a minute because t h o u g h t s.

In a lot of my comments I speculated about endgames, after a few throw away lines jokingly hopeful for an OT3, or not wanting Raven to settle for a guy who'd spent the whole fic agonizing over the same woman her ex cheated with etc etc.

But as I'm rereading now just to be chill and quiet in my brain the "reader brain" can kick in and see the massive and parallel amounts of breadcrumb foreshadowing you've done, especially considering the pacing, expected chapter count, and the mystery of what's up with spacekru rn.

I now more than ever suspect the Raven/Bellamy and Murphy/Clarke endgame, that's where I'm at, because I believe you when you've said you waffled about it because you're writing is sophisticated enough that you could pull off either, (and I've obviously waffled in my comments) but I'm seeing breadcrumbs that seem decisive in the latest chapters and heck even if I'm still wrong I just got all fond of your writing when I thought about likely scenarios and the spacekru chapters yet to come.

Even more excited thinking about Bellamy and Clarke as parallels instead of fated star crossed cinematic lovers. Both holding someone else's hand for five years after a single year cinematic romance. Oooooo

Also go Raven for being the adult Murphy never will be and just saying it aloud to Bellamy's conscious face. Even if prompted by probable death and without us readers knowing how long exactly she'd known herself. Just brilliant stuff!

So I graduated with my bachelors may 2021 right, and I graduated from the honors program at my college. I didn’t find out I had adhd until after graduation so I spent the entirety of my bachelors thinking my inability to focus was a problem with me individually as a person and that I was just lazy and immature and would never be able to grow up.

When I was a freshman we had Honors ‘family meetings’ where a group of freshman were assigned under a sophomore to help us get used to college. Went great! Until the last meeting where one of the honors advisors came by.

He asked if we had any feedback or ideas or concerns and I mentioned that I’d been having trouble remembering assignments for the honors program bc the were on google classroom (for some reason???) rather than blackboard where literally all my other stuff was and I’d missed the deadline for one or two and turned them in late as a result. (Again, I h a d u n d i a g n o s e d a d h d w h i c h i s w e l l k n o w n t o c a u s e m e m o r y p r o b l e m s. Certainly didn’t help that we didn’t ALWAYS have an assignment that week so not only were they out of the way they were irregular too, talk about hell for an ND)

He literally, quite literally, laughed directly in my face and said ‘well have you tried being more responsible?’ And then brushed me off as a lazy teenager.

First of all, dick move regardless. Second of all, I had those problems bc of an undiagnosed neurodevelopmental disorder.

Guess who’s very much graduated now and very much has the medal to show that I completed the honors program and also very much has a prescription for adhd medication to show I’m serious and ALSO sent an email to the head of the honors department that this happened and tl;dr said ‘you failed as advisors and failed me as someone in your program, but I didn’t need you and made it without you, what about the students in your care now who do need you that you may be failing?’

Guess who’s exchanged multiple emails with the head of the program (nice guy, he’s fine and def not the one who was cruel that day, I like him just fine and have never had a problem with him) and he has shared my email with the rest of the advisors (the guy who said it is still theeeerrreeee <— singsong) and we are now coordinating a meeting with me, him, and ALL of the honors advisors to talk more about this??? :)

I am coming for their throats. :)

(I am not going to call out the specific guy bc I refuse to potentially ruin someone’s job over a singular, thoughtless comment over 4 years ago. I’m not that kind of person.)

‘Hey so I was mocked for expressing I had a problem and turns out I had that problem bc of an undiagnosed neurological disorder so 1. Remember Lezor, the guy I made inspired on the Dadaist movement aesthetic-sorta? Well, have a character based off an ACTUAL artist from the movement, one of my favorites of such if that

The sir this fellow is made after is Marcel Duchamp, one of the most influential Dadaist since 1914, way before the movement was even a thing (talk about advanced to ur time ayo). Nonetheless, the outfit I drew Addel in here not only implicitly references the pieces Marcel had made and the styles he had involved himself into, but also the “alter ego” he had made for himself and was also known for back then: Rrose Selavy (1920) who he also used as an “author name” for some of his dada art pieces. The outfit is mostly based on a photography he got taken by Man Ray, one of the first ones if I’m not wrong.

But hey, don’t get the wrong idea –Addel does have his own independent set of self on the setting he’s on (the current century, lol); he’s more of a “successor” kind of guy, but he’s mostly an eccentric folk that’s just as fascinated of experimental and cinetic composition. Just saying so you guys don’t take him as a historical replica of Duchamp, because he’s not and I don’t pretend to have him as such.

As for why he’s a rodent...I honestly have no clue exactly. I’d say because of going after a not-so-aesthetic kind of animal for the sake of taking the contrary, of maybe I was slightly influenced by Ratatouille. Either way, it was for a metaphoric regarding rebelliousness... and maybe also out of satire.

Also case you wonder, his surname means “of the shouting” by a rough translation from French (and yes he’s French btw)

His appearance is on a really further part of the story, though it isn’t much deep important…but still

This time it’s Kurt Schwitters I took for this, who was a German Dadaist, his most known pieces being his “Merz”, which consisted on collages of things he found meddling around in the trash, from paper-based things to little trinkets and just anything that could fit in a canvas, this under the philosophy of “building a new world from the shards of the one he was living in” (keep in mind, Dada happened during the World War as an anti-belicism/anti-war protest, hence the metaphor), and also his “Merzbau” –basically the same thing but instead of stuff in a small canvas it was ROOMS filled with stuff, they looked really surreal and neat despite how chaotic they were…most of those got destroyed in the war by orders of the Nazi regime sadly :(

Anyway, just like with Addel, Gus is a character on his own, and basically does similar things as Kurt, though he’s a little more into mechanics when building his interpretations of Merzbaus… I’ll leave that to y’all’s imaginations :) (?)

As for why he’s a ferret, probably because of how I interpreted him as an energetic kind of guy (I refer to Gus, not Kurt himself, but maybe a bit on that too).

He’s Addel’s “roommate” and mildly personal friend. He’s also German jic you wonder so.

Can I just say that the Hylain Alphabet is weird. Like why I should there so many repeating letters?!? It makes it really confusing to decode if your starting out. I understand that it’s a fictional langue, but who thought it would be a good idea that X and I look exactly the same! It would be hard to read for the hylains to. Yeah, for us it can get really confusing, and it makes it hard to decode stuff sometimes. But I'd guess the in-universe reason for the repeating letters and stuff is just that the sounds those letters make either just don’t exist in that Hylian or the repeating letters actually have a double pronunciation

Like, in SkSw for example, we have this "translation" guide of written Hylian to English:

D and W, E and K, G and Q, P and T, O and Z, X and I. Those pairs share hylian symbols.

So, retaking what I said above, this could mean those symbols have two ways to be pronounced, which isn’t totally unheard of? In many languages, like Spanish and English, the letter “C” can have both a “S” and a “K” sound, despite being completely different letters. In Spanish, “G” can have both an English-esque “H” sound and a normal “G” one.

The opposite theory would be that, in the case of the letter shared by D and W, one of those sounds doesn’t exist in Hylian - which, if we listen to the ballad of the goddess sang by Zelda and Fi, could be W’s case, since that noise could easily be replaced by a u sound, that has a unique letter in the alphabet.

But there’s also a third possibility here... As much as Hylian’s written in English throughout SkSw, we know for a fact it’s not pronounced the same. Let’s take “Link” for example

We know Link is written this way in Hylian, both because Nintendo confirmed the above translation of the alphabet, and because, in-game, we see Zelda wrote his name that way in the letter she sends to him at the very beginning:

but we KNOW his name isn’t actually said “Link” in Hylian! - It’s actually “Madas”/”Matdas”. Fi says it all the time, along with the Hylian for Master: “Mari” (Mari Madas = Master Link). You can hear Fi saying his name in the very first cutscene with Link in it, the one the above screenshot is from

So, going from the written “LINK” and the spoken “MADAS”, the corresponding sounds for each letter could be something like this in Spoken Hylian:

....i uh, got a bit carried away with this but the TL;DR basically is - Hylian might be written in English in some cases, and might be confusing since some Hylian letters share English ones, but that’s most probably because in Spoken Hylian the noises those letters represent are very different!

Kujhikoslan, the Complete Grammar Guide

Of all the groups in Strelles, the Fox Skulks were the first societies to approach the Sky Kingdoms upon realizing that they had made generous strides in preserving and recovering the Old Tongues. Their language is deeply precious to them and though they respect the decision of the gods to stop the meaningless aggression all species directed at each other, they’re pleased to see that the gods agreed with them reclaiming their Tongues once they understood the point that was being made.

Given that the skulks were the first to invent a written variant of their language, they were among the easiest to rebuild once they could understand the markings and managed to break it down. As such, it’s considered to be the tongue closest to its Old Form before the Connection - something they take great pride in. This means that much like the Sky Kingdoms, the language isn’t exclusive to any rank or position but rather, an inherent part of living within the skulks.

Kujhikoslan has 19 official consonant sounds;

The squiggly lines are where the pronunciation of the sound isn’t quite set in stone. The skulks towards the west use /ʤ/ instead of /ʧ/.

Part 3: Animacy Based Noun Classes

Kujhikoslan has simply tri-class animacy system. The hierarchy is very basically animate, semi-animate and inanimate objects.

The Animate Class is usually fairly obvious - it’s moving, breathing things like fellow creatures and most plants that grow rapidly such as flowers. The Inanimate Class is equally obvious consisting mostly of things such as trees, rocks, mud and certain creatures that a skulk can be stubborn about.

The Semi Animate Class is for things granted a degree of life from their religious beliefs.

Animate Examples (-(r)a) - Jhiko (fox), Kis (cat), Tciri (a partner bird)

Semi Animate Examples (-(m)e) - Ansel (wind),

Inanimate Examples (-(h)a)) - Komok (rock), Hiyil (river)

When put into practice, the animacy system applies to and affects numerals and adjectives.

Part 4: Grammatical Number

Much like Adovusala, the skulks of strelles have a rather simple grammatical number system. Only a singular/plural divide leaving the singular bare - jhiiko (fox) - and adding the prefix ku- to make it plural - kujhiko (foxes).

Part 5: Tense and Aspect

---

There are four tenses and aspects in Kujhikoslan the same as Adovusala, there are also four tenses in this language. The four aspects are the perfective, habitual, continuous and pausative aspects - the four tenses being distant past, past, present and future tenses.

Here’s the example word;

In the second and third persons, the animacy hierarchy triggers agreement on the verbs.

Asla - to speak (animate) Aslamri - to speak (semi animate) Aslaso - to speak (inanimate)

These agreements are meant to emphasize what’s happening - generally speaking, rocks don’t speak and ergo, the agreement is meant to confirm that yes, this improbable interpretation is indeed what this sentence means.

Hel kis aslar ir hel ansel - the cat speaks to the wind

In this situation, the cat is the one doing the speaking and ergo, the word used is aslar.

Hel anser aslamrir ir hel kis - the wind speaks to the cat

Now here, it’s the wind speaking to a cat. In this case, it’s assumed that the wind is actually a spirit of a sort, whispering to the cat rather than the actual wind itself.

Hel komok aslasor ir hel kis - the rock speaks to the cat

Same situation as the previous sentence except even more unbelievable to the listener - rocks rarely speak if ever, so a speaking rock is typically interpreted as a trapped spirit or even a demon.

Part 6: Pronouns

Now unlike the language of the packs, Kujhikoslan doesn’t have a system of honorifics making their pronouns much simpler than Adovusala;

The possessives unfortunately get a little bit more complicated than that as the skulks differentiate between alienable and inalienable objects.

Alienable Nouns are things you have a choice over owning and can be divorced from you such as a food or an adornment. Meanwhile, Inalienable nouns are things that can’t be divorced from the person such as a blood relations and your species.

Part 7: Articles and Demonstratives

The articles and demonstratives of Kujhikoslan are very simple with definite articles and indefinite articles for a specific thing and a broad thing. Unlike other languages however, the articles are divided up into the three animacy classes;

And the indefinite articles are;

The demonstratives have been left alone in the distinction with only a near/far difference;

Spoilers for anyone actually reading Neon Glow, like major spoilers, though since I haven't finished drafting all three books yet, it could be subject to change.

To explain the political structure of Arcadia, I have to first explain the history. (tl;dr at the end)

Before the war, Arcadia was a huge research facility, the most ambitious yet, built somewhere in Europe (they still use Euros after the war). The research facility was funded largely by people who were not scientists because the research itself was on prolonging human life, the boundaries of the human body and the human psyche.

As you can expect from billionaires, a few of the experiments were profoundly fucked up.

It was assumed that after the war, the facility was abandoned, people gathered the resources they had and bunkered down for the rest of eternity stuck in a radioactive wasteland. They built cities into the "chambers", towns, villages, depending on the size, they traded the specific resources each area had with other areas and effectively became their own small country.

Big spoilers from here:

Except the experiments are still ongoing, and ran by the descendants of 12 of the 13 benefactors that Arcadia had pre-war. See these people didn't live in Arcadia, they knew the bombs were coming they didn't want to be living in that wasteland with The Poors, especially when they can use them for free labour, taking their crops and their water and their animals and their livelihoods. They live above it. Think Bioshock Infinite sort of life.

These descendants run Arcadia, they make up the council. There is a president of the council, the president in which people of Arcadia are most familiar with.

(At this point you might be thinking, hey what...what happened to the 13th descendant? Ash? ASH??? In which case I'd say :) :) )

The president addresses the people, he declares laws, writes verdicts, but honestly the council just do the bare minimum to keep the people alive enough to provide for them. They disguise that bare minimum as "well, it's the end of the world, what more can we do?" and the people are mostly non-the-wiser.

This starts off in the background, because the first book is very character driven with Ari, April, and Ana's work (and the others too) very much in the background, it just sort of introduces the setting and what's going on in that world. In the second book, it becomes more apparent as we move from the almost utopia-like Sight into its complete opposite (Poison). There's a lot to question about the state of the place and why nobody has come to help the people there. Perhaps even wanting them to die.

The third book is very heavy with it. It's like the climax of all the loose threads in the first two books, the hints that are dropped, the outright tension building towards the political state of Arcadia.

Okay I'll stop rambling, woo boy. I love Arcadia, I've never built a sci-fi world before, so I've had SOOOO much fun with the world building, the test chambers especially. I have a list of all 100 sections (some are very tiny, some are fuckin H U G E) just for the fun of it, about ten of them will get mentioned really.

TL;DR: 13 rich people set up Arcadia, their descendants are running the show, they're not politicians or scientists and are haphazardly letting experiments run and are doing the bare minimum to stop people realizing they're just being used for the rich to steal their resources. it doesn't end up going well for them.
