Stop "Orange Mussolini!"
I read an article in The Atlantic written in 2016 about the threat that "Orange Mussolini" posed to American democracy. Ruth Ben-Ghiat, an expert in Fascism, accurately predicted what "45" would become as POTUS. Why didn't more people (particularly political leaders and the media) take her seriously? Had Ben-Ghiat been given a bigger platform, maybe she could have gotten Democrats to regard "45" as the democratic threat that he turned out to be and work harder in getting the "base" (particularly black people in "swing" states) out to vote. Now that we know who "45" is, I hope the Democrats and the media don't make the same mistakes again about him and a Republican Party who is too afraid to confront him. Starting with the midterm elections, Americans need to vote in the masses for people who support American democracy. And as a side note, the Democratic Party should stop undercutting Republicans who support democracy (in other words, Democrats should stop supporting Far Right Republicans who they see as easier to beat in a general election; that tactic doesn't always work). The stakes are high in our upcoming elections, and those who value democracy should take the threats to it seriously, even if it means working with political opponents to preserve it. America's future depends on it.

Take note. The latest NBC poll reveals a shift in American viewpoint. "Threats to democracy" is the #1 concern. (At last!)

What are the most serious threats to democracy, or, put another way, what are the clearest indicators that we have already lost it?
Loss of free expression through social regulation.
Militarization and misuse of police power.
Persistence of the surveillance state.
Government secrecy, which erodes trust and prevents holding officials to account.
Top-down regulation, taxation, and distribution of revenue, where citizens have little to no say in any of these important matters.
Maintenance of maximum security and other prisons, where solitary confinement and other forms of prisoner mistreatment occur.
Inability of Congress to operate according to its own rules, along with an executive branch that acts as if no constraints on its power exist.
Endless, pointless wars overseas, free from Congressional control.
Parents’ judgment that public schools, once seen as institutions for democratic education and social cohesion, now divide people into antagonistic groups based on race and ethnic background.
Widespread sense of helplessness among voters, who feel that to influence political outcomes, they must sign on with Team Red or Team Blue.
Corrupt, dishonest, and self-serving attitudes among public officials, who no longer see public service as their primary mission.
Willingness to use violence and intimidation to achieve political outcomes.
A strong sense, among various groups, that government power is illegitimate - that holds especially for outcomes of the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.
That makes thirteen. Can you think of others?

On July 18th, 2015, I realized that the Republican Party had left me behind. On this day, while seeking the Republican nomination for president, Donald Trump had the following to say about an Annapolis graduate who was shot down, captured and tortured as a POW by the communist North Vietnam regime:
“He's not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."
This verbal diarrhea came out of the mouth of a man who used his father’s wealth and privilege to dodge the draft five different times due to his “bone spurs”. Donald Trump is a traitor, a repeated draft dodger and the largest fraud in the history of our country.

Good grief... this stupid woman Truss is a danger to Britain and the whole world.
A failed Tory prime minister who only lasted a few disastrous weeks in office, but who managed to crash the British economy in that time, now suggests Trump should win?!
She shouldn't be allowed out into the community, never mind being given political power.

“The GOP isn’t even bothering to hide its goals to seize permanent minoritarian power anymore. Republican candidates for various state offices in all the swing states are promising to deliver their Electoral College votes to the GOP presidential nominee in 2024, regardless of whom people in the state cast their ballots for. Republican leadership also isn’t even bothering to hide its ambition to turn the U.S. into a competitive authoritarian theocracy: The 2022 Conservative Political Action Conference was held in Hungary to celebrate and learn what can be gained by killing democracy as Viktor Orbán has.”
