If you’re still taking requests can you write something where you meet Lando at a club during a race week, like the club id in your hometown and he’s there for the race, and he never finds you after that weekend, and like the only thing he has I a picture you took on his phone with him but he really wants to find you and he goes back to that club the next year during the race to try and find you, idk if I explained well but is this thing we’re you meet someone and have that instant pull but never see each other and when you finaly find each other it’s mike an instant click again
Cinderella
Lando Norris X Reader
Genre: Fluffy stuffs
Request: yesssss I love this idea! My requests are still open! Send me ideas it's my favorite thing to hear them
Warnings: It's titled Cinderella... toxic family behaviors, also not proofread because that’s hard and I’m not getting paid for this
Notes: written in third person. I think my new goal is to make a fairytale version for each driver. So of y'all want to see more of this please let me know and if you have any pairing ideas I'd be happy to hear them.
So I'm not sure about how other countries do their addresses. I am from the US and am basing the address format off of that. Apologies if there is any confusion 😅
Masterlist
Tumblr media
He didn't believe love at first sight could be possible. It didn't make any sense. But as Lando laid his eyes on her, somehow he just knew.
Maybe it was her smile from across the bar at him. Maybe it was the alcohol that made his confidence go up. Maybe it was the way she laughed at all his antics and jokes. He didn't know, but he was sure he'd never felt more comfortable than with this stranger.
They talked the entire night. They danced until their legs gave out. Then they parted ways.
It was the next morning he realized he didn't get her number. The devastation hitting him like a truck.
Everyone around Lando tried to get to the bottom of his depressed state. Nobody could figure out why he stared at the same picture everyday for over a month.
That stupid selfie he took of the two. He tried everything he knew to find her. Using that picture as his guide. He tried searching her name on socials, but either her account was private or she didn't have any.
Maybe he was imagining everything. She was a ghost, and he was officially crazy.
~
Lando. The attractive male she met at the bar. How had one man done so much to her in one night?
She'd purposely not left him with her contact information. Her family was difficult when it came to privacy.
She wanted to go find him. However, she had already gotten herself in trouble for going to the bar in the first place.
Her stepmother and adoptive sisters made it a point to make her life difficult.x she didn't need to be dragging her relationship through the mud like that.
So why couldn't she stop thinking about him? Was it the way he was so gentle with her when they danced? Was it how his smile and laugh lit up the entire vicinity? How he was impressively respectful? She didn't know, but she felt more at home with a stranger then at her actually home.
It felt ridiculous to be moping over him. She'd never see him again, and he probably wasn't thinking about her. Yet she couldn't stop herself from letting her thoughts drift back to the Brit and his lovely eyes.
~
It had been a year, but Lando never stopped looking.
He'd been on some dates. His friends were tired of him playing detective. They'd tried to help him find her, then resorted to helping him move on from this mysterious and elusive female.
However, Lando Norris was determined. He would go door to door if he had to.
Is this determined state, he dragged Max out to the bar where he met her. Exactly a year later.
Max sighed in exasperation but indulged his friend nonetheless. He wanted to help him get some closure, if anything. Lando reluctantly agreed. If she wasn't here, then he would move on from it.
He waited at the bar. His eyes scan the crowds of people for and sign of that familiarity he had once before.
Max did his best to help. The picture is not giving him much to go off.
But it was her that spotted them first.
Lando was out of his seat in an instant. His body moves faster than his brain. He wasn't thinking properly.
When his lips landed on hers, everything fell into place. He didn't care if she didn't remember. He needed this for himself, and then he could move on.
He was shocked when she kissed him back. She gripped his shoulders while he let his arms wrap around her. As if one would dissapear if the other let go.
"You found me." She said breathless as they pulled away from eachother.
~
It was the one weekend she had the house to herself. The rest of her family went on some sort of vacation. They never invited her. Something about it being relatives only.
She didn't care, though. Her friends would be showing up any minute to whisk her away for a night out.
It had been a year since a stranger stole her world. She doubted she would see him there. The odds of it unlikely.
When they arrived, she quickly made her way to the bar. Her mind is ready to let loose for the night.
Then she laid eyes on him. The man who shed been thinking about for the last year.
She thought she might be seeing things. Willing him to be there in front of her. Her careful steps forward only make her more nervous.
She was received when he came to her. The kiss he placed on her lips, sending her body into shock.
Yet she embraced it because he felt like home.
It was almost midnight, and the two had spent the majority just talking. Dancing in between conversations.
She was pulling out her phone when she saw she had an unread message. She was going to get his number this time, but the distraction of the text sent her mind into a tizzy.
There was an emergency, so we're on the next flight home.
It was from one of her stepsisters. The panic set in faster than anything, and instead of her number, she pulled out a pen and reached for a napkin. Her hand frantically scribbled her address.
"Come find me."
She slid the napkin to Lando. Then ran off with one of her friends. Leaving the male in confusion.
~
Technically speaking, Max didn't have to be here. But driving around and knocking on stranger doors didn't seem like something he should let his friend do alone
Lando, on the other hand, had thrown caution to the wind. He was practically shaking in excitement.
Though he was a bit frustrated that this was taking ao long. He had an entire address except for the last number on the house. Meaning he had to knock on every door in the area until he found the right one.
The next door was opened by an older looking woman. She looked angry at him even though he hadn't done anything yet.
He cleared his throat and went into his explanation. "Hello, I'm looking for a girl, she gave me her adress but left out the last number and so I was wondering if maybe she lives here?" He explains, holding up his phone to show her the picture.
"No. I don't know her... but maybe one of my other daughters does." She changed her tone immediately upon really looking at Lando. "Would you mind coming inside and maybe we can help?"
Lando was skeptical. He didn't know what to do. Max took that as his cue to also get out of the car and join him.
The woman motioned the two to follow her. The door closing loudly behind them. Lando wanted to cringe at the smell. Strong perfume singed inside his nose.
The two males followed her into the dining room and gestured for them to have a seat. Then scurried off to find her daughter's.
She reappeared a few minutes later with two younger women. Definitely not ones he was looking for.
It felt more like they were being shown off than helping. Both of them batting their eyelashes at him and Max
They were going over who lived in each house he hadn't been to yet. How maybe he had the wrong address. How they should stay for dinner that night.
Lando felt uncomfortable. Thankful Max was politely turning away each unwanted advance.
"I hate to ask, but we've been driving around all day, can I please use your restroom?"
One of the younger females showed him down the hall. Brushing her hand up against his at every given opportunity.
He felt relieved to be away from the situation. He didn't actually need to use the bathroom. He just needed a break. He leaned against the counter. Preparing himself to figure out how he was going to find her now.
Then he heard it. Muffled shouts from further down the hall.
He quietly excited the bathroom and tiptoes his way towards the muffled panicked shouts.
"Lando! I'm here!" Came a familiar voice. "Please, they locked me inside."
Lando tried the doorknob. Obviously, it didn't work. So he tapped the door. "Is there a window you can get through?" He whispered to the door. He could hear her sigh in relief at hearing his voice.
"Yes, but their is a drop-off. It's almost 13 feet up."
Lando was not going to let all his searching go to waste. So he came up with a plan.
~
Max was making his best attempt at polite conversation when Lando practally dragged him out. "There's been an emergency, and we're needed back at the hotel."
Max waved goodbye and thanked them for their time. Leaving the three strange women in a state of shock and confusion.
When they got in the car, Max was ready to lecture him. However, Lando beat him to it with an explanation.
"She's there. They locked her in her room. Since it's an older house, we need a key to unlock it. So I'm coming back tonight to help her leave through her window."
Max was at a loss for words. Again, feeling the need to help Lando in his quest for love.
"Okay. When do we start?"
~
They came back when it was dark. Parking the car one street away so they wouldn't be spotted.
It was an ungodly hour in the morning. Yet the young woman had never felt more energized.
She hastily scribbled a note to her family. Not about where she was going, just that she was leaving and didn't want them to look for her. Not that they would.
She'd packed a bag of her belongings. Small things she couldn't replace and the necessities. Lando had laughed when she panicked about what to bring with her. Making her a promise that if she stayed with him, he would take care of her. The girls anxiety settled after that.
She'd managed to pop out the screen of the window. Peeking her head outside to see if anyone was around. The drop wasn't terrible. 12 and a half feet wouldn't do that much damage if she landed it right.
At least, that's what she was telling herself.
Ten minutes later, Lando was shining a light in her window. A rope in his hands and Max at his side. She'd briefly met the Dutch at the bar.
Lando tossed up one end of a rope to her. It almost hit her face because she wasn't expecting it.
She secured it tightly to the door handle. Then sat at in the window. Her legs dangling, hands clutching the rope.
"I'll catch if you fall, I promise." Lando encourages. Making her feel a little better.
She breathes deeply and starts her descent before she can think about it any longer. Using the rope to slow down her fall as gravity does its job. Her hands were burning when she felt the ground touch her feet. Her knees buckling with the sudden weight.
Lando was immediately pulling her into himself. Kissing her red hands.
Then they went back to the car.
~
It was a crazy idea. The existence of true love. But they say true love always finds you. And as the two strangers, tied together by a red string, they realized it was true.

TBOSAS: my second read annotations
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Who were all these people hanging around on a weekday at the zoo? Didn't they have jobs? Shouldn't the children be in school? No wonder the country was such a mess." (P.49)
Annotation: omg he sounds like a Tory, boy shut upppp
"Without turning he knew it was the girl, his girl, and he felt immense relief that he was not entirely alone." (P.49)
Annotation: you cannot convince me he sees Lucy Gray as an equal. His possession isn't romantic it's degrading.
Tumblr media
"She ran her thumb over the glossy, white surface and slipped the petal into her mouth, closing her eyes to savour the flavour. 'Tastes like bedtime.'" (p.42)
Annotation: Literally consuming the symbol of his wealth -> foreshadowing him leaving the capital for her/because of her.
Tumblr media
"She parceled out her roses like diamonds, though, so it has taken a good bit of persuasion to get this beauty." (P.38)
Annotation: roses - Snow's symbol from a sought gift and sign of wealth, plus ties to his mother. In THG they (the roses) are all white (a lack of colour representing Lucy?) and used as threats.
Addition: I think some of the rose symbolism for snow is obvious of course. Something beautiful but with thorns. And him gifting one to Lucy Gray as a token that represents him being another sign of ownership which creeps up throughout. And this parallels his interactions with Katniss and the rose in Mockingjay where it serves as a reminder that he will always own her.
Tumblr media
"'Imagine how terrified she must be, Coryo,' Tigris has said. 'How alone she must feel If it was me, anything you could do to make you feel like you cared about me would go a long way. No, more than that. Like I was of value.'" (p.37-38)
Annotation: The way she has to remind him about empathy.... Snow is not an empath.
Addition: Tigris spitting bars as usual.
Tumblr media
"The mayor glowered at the camera as he slapped his hand into the second bag and pulled several slips out. A few fluttered down to the stage as he read the remaining paper. 'The District Twelve boy tribute is Jessup Diggs.'" (p.29)
Annotation: the sealing of fate done so carelessly? Doesn't the boy even deserve grace?
Addition: something about this just hurt, after Lucy Gray slipped the snake down Mayfair's dress the Mayor doesn't even have the courtesy to be careful picking out a name. And the way the other names fall it truly is just terrible luck for Jessup, any of those names could have been it. It really hits how many children stand on the execution block at this moment.
Tumblr media
"This District 12 girl? Could there be a bigger slap in the face?" (P.22)
Annotation: foreshadowing (or preshadowing) Katniss. Snows weakness since the beginning has been underestimating the districts. And his own self-imposed importance
"'You forget I'm part of that litter,' said Sejanus hoarsley."
Annotation: oh Sejanus baby :/
Tumblr media
"He thought of people putting a price on her [Tigris]. With her long, pointed nose and skinny body... She had a sweetness, a vulnerability that invited abuse... The idea made him feel sick and helpless, and consequently, disgusted with himself." (P.4)
Annotation: weren't so disgusted to not do it to Finnick though we're you?
Addition: Collins very neatly tries to handle SA as a topic in a way that is palatable to the age range of her books whilst also not dismissing it. On a series built on exploitation it would be a disservice to recognise the role SA does play in this on all sides. It's especially interesting how Snow later becomes an abuser and SA facilitator when it suits him despite his revulsion here. I don't know if that's because he cares about Tigris or the damage to their reputation if she sold her body as he is alluding too.

Tumblr media
jeonghan
you were lying upside down on your couch, head dangling over the edge as jeonghan laid on the floor. he was there for film night - at least, he thought that's what the plan was supposed to be. your television black screened and lifeless and the only sounds echoing off your apartment's walls were the buzzing of the aircon overhead and your voices as you spoke. talking with you was always so easy, and neither of you realised how fast the hours were passing as you discussed everything that was anything to either of you. it got rather philosophical at times, and both of you ended up sharing secrets and stories neither of you had ever thought anyone else would hear, and eventually the clock struck 7 in the morning, the two of you thankful it was a sunday and you could sleep in.
it hit him all at once during a period of vulnerable silence after he shared a particularly hard to recount story about his trainee days, tears burning at his eyes, when you rolled onto your stomach and placed your hand on his in wordless encouragement. he realised he felt so comfortable, he trusted you more than anyone, he wanted to hear everything you could ever even think of saying no matter how small you found it, and then he realises he wanted an infinite number of nights like that one. maybe, he thinks, during the next one the raw vulnerability you shared would allow him to confess. he certainly hoped so.
joshua
you've completely forgotten how this weird gag the two of you were doing began - all you knew was that you were doing your best granny impression and you and joshua were the only two laughing. joshua had forgotten as well, for he was too focused on the way your eyes creased when you laughed and how into it you got as you played off of his jokes to evolve them further. the other members were rolling their eyes and fake gagging, as always, but he could only wonder how it hadn't hit him sooner. even when the others were acting unamused through stifled giggles, you were always as raucous as he was, immediately joining in whatever bits he began and going back and forth as if you were a comedy duo currently on stage and bantering with each other as if you were born to do so. you laughed at every single one of his jokes, and if no one heard them you were always so deliberate in your "what was that, josh?" - he could never feel unfunny with you because you'd never let him.
moreso, he was always smiling and laughing when he was around you, feeling so light and so understood, even though you could be serious with one another too. it hit him as he watched you laugh at his put on accent, how constantly supported and happy he felt because of you, and he did a horrible job of hiding it as he stared at you too long and you asked if he was okay. a warm blush dusting his cheeks, the members finally were laughing now, but for an entirely different reason.
jihoon
jihoon called you over from where you sat scrolling on your phone in the corner of his studio. you obliged, sitting on his lap as was normal for you both, taking the headphones he offered you without noticing how pink his ears were even in the harsh light of his monitors. it was dark outside by now, and he was always so thankful for your willingness to stay late at nights while he worked as he adored your company more than he was prepared to admit. he played the track he was working on from the beginning and felt it slowly dawn on him as he studied your expression. you were as focused as always, every note and layered instrument broken apart and dissected in your brain. your feedback was always genuinely helpful to him.
you suggested changing the key, which he hadn't thought of, but while he agreed with you he didn't notice he was taking longer than usual to respond as it all clicked in his brain. you weren't one to just say "this is so good!" without offering any feedback, even though you weren't shy with the compliments either, and he appreciated the suggestions as they came from an entirely different standpoint to his own and often completely transformed his music. you didn't know all the theory terms like he did but you didn't have to; you always knew exactly what he needed, and he loved your honesty and constant readiness to help him out. the way you took interest in his interests, the way you took it seriously because he did, the way you mirrored his passion without even realising it. he glanced at the nintendo switch he'd bought to keep next to his equipment after you'd mentioned potentially thrashing him in mario kart once and realised he would always do the same for you. and he finally knew why.
seokmin
seokmin is the first to admit he doesn't really know much about your field of study/work. he thinks you're ridiculously smart, and incredibly cool, but he is often rather lost when you go on impassioned asides about a certain related thing you've learned recently. it doesn't stop him from looking at you with stars in his eyes, however, absolutely awestruck as you gesticulate a ton to accompany your words, and it's during one of these rambles that it hits him like a ton of bricks.
he is slightly clueless, but he asks a ton of questions, for he truly cares, and he listens intently when you're all too willing to explain things to him. he was afraid at first of looking stupid, but you've never treated him as such, if anything even more excited to explain things to him. it opens him up, draws him out, allows him to ask even more questions and egg you on, and eventually he finds himself reading up on these passions in his free time and thinking of other things to ask you and discuss with you when the time is right. during the talk that it hits him he realises he is so excited, and he isn't even fully sure why, it's just that you're so animated and enlivened that it makes him feel the exact same. he realises he never wants you to stop talking, never wants to stop learning, never wants to see that spark leave your eye, and that he is oh so very in love with you. he wondered if he can confess in a subject relevant pick up line, or if that would be a little too cheesy.
seungkwan
you were completely ignoring him at the moment, but for once he didn't really care, relaxing on your couch as you tidied the kitchen. he often went over for dinner, claiming it's because he'd forget to eat otherwise (not entirely false) and mostly unwilling to admit that you just so happen to be his favourite person to spend time with. music blared from your phone on the countertop as you finished doing the dishes and grabbed a cloth to wipe down the surfaces, absentmindedly beginning to sing along. it was a duet, and you assumed both the male and female parts, putting on silly voices and giggling to yourself as you danced around and cleaned as you went.
he watched you, transfixed, unsure as to whether he wanted to join you in dancing and assume the male parts himself (though he wouldn't complain about being the female part either, for he did have the range) or keep observing you. he settled on the latter, and it's then it dawned on him, that his heart was swelling as he watched you be goofy in your own little world. you managed to make such small things as house chores the most fun thing in the world and fill the apartment with an abundance of joy so easily, and he can never help but smile. after a few more seconds he did get up, his voice piercing the air as he tackled the higher notes of the female singer, and you giggled at him and lowered your own voice as much as you possibly could to contrast him. he held out a hand to you in an invitation to waltz the best you could around the room and wondered if you knew the romance expressed in the lyrics were exactly how he felt about you as he'd just come to realise.

meta: sam coe - post-campaign analysis
allllrighty i am officially post-campaign so time for first thoughts. since im still collecting my feelings/opinions on the main quest i dont want to go super into that. i wanna wait and consolidate into a deep dive on that one. BUT i am a fic writer with a fixation on socioeconomics, intergenerational trauma, and more specifically the phenomenon of atheists clinging to their religious parents morals because they haven't taken the time to evaluate their biases and the reasons they still hold them
translation: the silver spoon space cowboy is an interesting concept. poory executed in the case of starfield, sadly, but great framework for fandom to chop the head off of and bring to their own individual comfort interpretations.
this meta will include spoilers for the following:
-sam's questline and the npcs involved
-his romance
-cora, the safety storyline around her, and how she's the best part of the space game
-why bethesda was fucking stupid to turn the cowboys into cops when they have the perfect opportunity for not that. i went in hoping for retired/reformed army rangers fed up with war looking to defend their home from fascism given the "han solo simulator" marketing, but all i got was this lousy ass rendition of the texas rangers, which i for SURE did not want
-i WONT be going into detail about the main plot for this post, just fyi. i wanna save that, and sam's relation to it, for its own essay. id still recommend not reading meta's until you finish the game tho
-i miss obsidian's writing. this game made me want to play outer worlds for the 100th time. that will probably come up a lot
this is probably gonna sound more than a bit scattered and off the fucking plot for the first section, but bare with me, im making a point eventually i promise. gotta make sure we're all on the same page first.
now that ive done a majority of his content, it's clear what the intent was for sam and i applaud it. i like it when good hearts in bad systems spot the fundamental flaws and decide to abandon it entirely, or work to change it. i hate perfect characters. i hate characters that have no growth to find. sam is a great character for showing the awesome power of a perspective change. but damn. what a waste when you're talking about a format where a writer is constricted to:
-an exact conversation trigger (bethesda games have always relied on interrupt & player approach, and i didnt notice any variation on game engine front but i wont know until they release the ck so)
-word limit on all responses (yes, you can make long dialogues in engine. but those words still have to be f u n d e d from a dev standpoint. words are not free in video games. capitalism sucks for art.)
-multiple conversation branches that ALL have to circle back to the original topic (they have to follow a set pattern of establishing a subject, then the players possible responses to that subject, the npcs responses to those responses, AND provide a seamless, one dialogue tie-in path to the next branch. it sounds super easy until you're the shmuck writing it, and then it doesnt feel so easy anymore)
-get approximately two personal quests with, what was it, 12 motion scripted scenes? (im watching other peoples pts now so ill try to remember to count, but it was. hmm. lack luster imo. im not saying quantity is vital. im a bioware fanatic, i know the power of quality when its actually delivered. i didnt have any moment like that for sams quests and it was kind of crushing. ill get into it.)
-appeal to a wide enough audience to obtain profit by holding back eXtReMe ViEwS (id like to point out that there is, at this exact moment in time, an active pr campaign (and a few scattered gaming content creators) surrounding starfield talking about how pronouns are politics and should be left out of gaming. over a setting flag in a save file. you literally dont even have to press a button about it. like, you pick your characters body. masc bodys are auto assigned m pronouns. fem bodies are auto assigned f pronouns. you literally dont even have to SEE the button, and it never gets brought up. the only purpose it serves is so the game knows what voice lines to fire. that. is. it.)
im not going to humor the "thats dumb, bethesda makes political games" contribution to the argument.
i get straight people think they're being super helpful and witty on that one, but i think the world would collectively benefit from allies taking just a few extra seconds before standing on that soapbox to maybe consider that calling existence "politics" might be, gee idk, insulting. maybe more than a lil dehumanizing. maybe super easily solved by just NOT giving into their parents obsession with playing devils advocate. i think if maybe allies could shut the fuck up for a minute or two at a time and go look for voices of authority within the communities they're defending instead of trying to talk over them, that'd probably work out better. might help cut out the completely useless middle man their parents taught them to be when they drilled home "you have to respect everyone's opinion"
no the fuck you do not, actually. i, as someone on this earth attempting to be a compassionate person, owe people a chance at understanding. i do not, under any circumstance, owe someone any kind of respect WHATSOEVER if they cannot respect me as a human being. full stop. i dont owe it to them, i dont owe it to their religion, i dont owe it to the government they try to establish. i do not owe respect to people attempting to oppress me. i never have and i never will.
but remember. there is context to be found in the passing of time. yes, you need to tell grandma to stop being racist. no, you do not need to banish grandma to the nursing home if there's still a chance that she's willing to sit and listen. a chance that she'll empathize with social perspectives that the racist society she was raised in never allowed her to have. breathe and give grandma the chance. then send her to the home if she's still racist.
(yes that was an analogy for how i imagine a perspective conversation with jacob would go. i do not have high hopes of that man finding self awareness given. well. who he is as a person.)
now. if you've played through sam's content, you already know why im bringing all of that up, but lets put together a list of all the things that Make Sam Coe Who He Is before we wrap it all up in a pretty bow that hopefully reads a lot less scattered than this "yo society got some trauma actually" lead up ive dumped on you
quick interrupt just for me: i love that im back on tumblr where i dont really have to give all that much of a fuck about making sense. any audience i could find here is equally unhinged so mostly i just have to format it in a way that makes your brain not hurt. sorry if you dont have adhd <3
1: lets talk about cora's hair.
im going to make the race observation because its bothering me from a dev standpoint AND the gamer crowd is already starting to make cuck memes which sucks to see.
i get that this doesnt matter in a colonialism scifi future where a service like enhance exists and we're talking about two rangers that apparently went under cover regularly, but it matters in the context of how sam was handled in a 2020 era commercial, creative environment. im just going to MENTION that cora coe's biological mother (that jab was me not liking her as a person, not me giving a shit that she's white) is paler than pale, and sam does NOT look like some of his earlier promo images. bethesda as a company also has a very long history of making characters arguably tan to avoid this shit.
9/16 edit: was asked for source, heres the exact image im referencing, which is still his set image on the starfield wiki to date:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(im going to preemptively warn any white artists building the urge to argue over this: you DO NOT want to die on a hill about lighting for this one, fucking trust me. thats not what this conversation is, and if you dont understand that as a White Artist, you need to sit this one out until you understand the full weight of the conversation and the profound effect of media treating skin color like a rare diversity accessory. bethesda has a very very long history of this. their last major story title, fallout 4, (76 was a money grab made in the other studio and i barely want to call it a game) had a whopping total of two black characters in its main cast, and both of them acted in subservient roles so please. please please please just. stop trying to defend bethesda on this one. its dehumanizing, cowardly, and malicious in this day and age. i promise im not trying to bite anyones head off here, im just Old And Tired when it comes to suburbanites in fandom.)
i think having solomon be canonically black would have been a really important aspect. i think it would have given the opportunity to show white people why its fucked up that they get SO EXCITED to save war mementos (or in the case of starfield a nasa memento) and will go on and on about how vital it is to save that piece of history, but when you bring up memorializing the importance of race as it pertains to human history and cultural history/pride, they suddenly start getting Very Uncomfortable and throw out phrases like "what does it matter we're all human" while standing next to the gun their grandfather smuggled home from the war
there is no brightness slider on pc and i havent gone reshade tweaking so everything is still washed out on my end (dont worry, as an rtx user, imma be makin a rant post on that) b u t. cora coe has a pale as fuck mother and a vaguely tan father with blue eyes and straight hair, meanwhile my precious angel has a darker complexion and curls that look like they're closing in on the 3c range so like. im getting vibes that sammy boy mighta been whitewashed during game dev, and thats about as far into THAT topic as im gonna bother to venture for this post.
2: his dad
were we supposed to have more daddy issues content??? istg it feels like there was the initial map talk and then nothing. im not saying that i cant pull blood from a stone and give you an entire essay on that glimpse of family trauma just from a few lines of dialogue, but still. feels like thats maybe something that should have gotten more detail.
"no forgiveness between me and my old man. it's uh... coe tradition."
oh boy. oh boy oh boy oh boy. what a line to start his personal quest
before we go ANY FURTHER im gonna drop a reference to one of my favorite aaron sorkin scenes of all time. its from the movie he did about the chicago seven, and i think it fits VERY well when having a conversation about how sam is shaped by his father
unfortunately the exact scene i want to show isnt clipped anywhere easy i could find, so here's an article that talks about that scene specifically if you want more context but dont want to watch the whole movie. what we're really focused on is this:
Tumblr media
which is a scene where a fictional account of bobby seale, the leader of the black panther party at the time of the chicago 7 trial, said that above quote to a fictional account of tom hayden while they were having a conversation about how the stakes of this trial are life and death for him as a black man, but little more than a family dispute and a dark spot on their records for the (all white) chicago 7.
its a GREAT continuation of sorkin’s fascination around father son conflicts (he covered it a time or two during his writing days as west wings original creator, which is a great political show id strongly rec) and it really really works when used in comparison to those rebellion days sam had that he still flagellates over
sam was a privileged kid without a foundation of emotional support or a safe environment to vent to. he didnt have the words needed to communicate what he was feeling and thinking and experiencing. he didnt have the means to express himself in a way that wasn't immediately criticized by the people in his life. it doesnt take a degree in psych to figure out that sam first ran for the stars to run from his father. and it sounds like that was tradition
from the MOMENT YOU MEET HIM, jacob is full stop "my way or the highway" until you hit him with the good ol bethesda persuasion and his disposition pulls a 180 to hand you the next plot device
sam: "you know why im here."
jacob: "oh? and what's that? you come to your senses? realize where you ought to be for once?"
w o w
i wonder why sam never felt safe in his own home. i wonder why he doesnt feel safe leaving cora there. i wonder why that miserable fucking attitude and guilt has sam convinced that jacob will be the worst possible thing for his curious daughter's self esteem.
yes, grandparents sip a different kind of koolaid when it comes to their grandkids. no, that is not enough to protect that child from that much intergenerational trauma. sam's made a bad choice keeping cora in space, but he's made an EXCELLENT choice keeping her away from jacob.
forget "showing respect" to his son's choices, jacob won't give them the time of day. he brushes off constellation and wont go meet them for himself, he insists that cora being "in her family home" is the only priority (isnt THAT telling) and, as if that wasnt enough to prove he's incapable of empathy, the fact that he outright, direct fucking quote during that first scene with him, says to sam's face
"the only mistake im seeing here is you"
fuck anyone who walked away from that scene of a parent saying that to their own kid and had the response of "i dont understand why sam wont let jacob take care of cora." fuck you, genuinely from the bottom of my heart, if that was your reaction.
i looked for opportunities to get sam to talk about what the rest of those "30 plus years of experience with the man" really looked like after that. the fact that it was used as a plot device without any (from what I COULD FIND in my first pt, if i find any ill edit this) kind of dialogue discussion about that trauma around his father's behavior/mentality and the terrible influence it had is such a waste. chances are!!!!!! id fucking agree with him!!!!!!!!!! SO TELL THEM TO ME BETHESDA!!!!!! give me the chance to storm back into that house with the full story and let that geriatric fuck know why he will not be allowed back into my daughters life (yeah we're gonna be calling cora our daughter on this one bc, again, she's the best thing in the game) until he can learn to be a safe emotional environment for her
and THEN, at the end of the romance, the wrinkly mf drops a "hey can you go over sam's head and make the parenting decisions now" 20 minutes before your vows get exchanged in his living room (WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT THAT MESS OF A WEDDING LMAO ITS A LOT but im probably gonna save it for another sam post where i talk more in depth about why packing a complicated romance in that tightly just Dont Work). like wow. wowowowwow. if that doesnt perfectly sum up how he views the dusty's (shhh i really hope that name catches on pls i keep seeing ppl use captain instead its heartbreaking) role in the family now, and confirm how he's always viewed his own son, idk what does
3: lillian "i can abandon my kid and demand she be taken care of in the same breath" hart
i was originally going to go into hella detail on his relationship with his ex but honestly i think im just gonna leave a few paragraphs and not touch on her again bc its bad for my blood pressure.
okay, here's the deal. im biased in the sense that i had a mother with attachment issues and lets just say that his ex is worth about as much to me as a pile of dogshit. it'd be one thing if she had that moment of "oh. sam and cora bond really well and i dont fit" and decided to look at that and evaluate if she wanted to continue trying to be a parent.
but she didnt have a moment of reflection. she didnt talk to a therapist. she didnt have a discussion with sam. she went back to work and decided "oh well, my kid doesnt like me" and then left her daughter with an open wound and no shot at closure. which is just. wow. that's active abandonment. she WALKED OUT of cora's life because she couldn't stomach the idea that she didnt immediately win over her daughter without any effort to connect to her.
then she has the nerve to yell at sam for not doing the best for cora. like bitch, you cant even consistently answer the phone??? what are you on??? she's REPEATEDLY broken cora's heart with false promises, and clearly made no effort to truly atone for that given just HOW angry sam is ALL the times he brings it up.
and she does it all for what????? a beat cop reputation and some shiny medals????? like shut the fuck up with that righteous indignation piglet, you're killing smugglers under someone's made up authority to protect COMMERSE, not creating galactic peace. the idea that THAT SHIT is worth more to her than her own daughter having a mother who's around for all her life milestones is inFURIATING and id fucking deck her if i could.
the fact that there's zero chance to call her out other than one single "thats a pretty awful thing to say" option is a real cop out from bethesda. they realized they put a woman in a position where she could be really, truly yelled at for something like child care, and chickened out on following through with it so they wouldnt take any heat.
thats gross and should piss you the fuck off, by the way. that sure the fuck isnt what equality looks like by any measure. you don't empower women by acting like they're infallible creatures you cant call out for being flawed. and you sure as shit dont empower the next generation of women by forgiving their abusers.
4: cora's safety
which brings us to the big sticky: sam is a disaster and i DONT think that keeping cora on a combat-active spaceship is right. i think she'd be much better off living in constellation hq (aside from the main plot obvsly) with a constant open comm to her dad and the ability to bring her to outposts and secured sights.
the problem with the biomother's abandonment isnt the distance. its the lack of attempt to connect. its the lack of forming a bond. its the fact that she had zero desire to understand her child once she figured out her child didnt "love her the most" when thats literally not a thing. the problem was never the physical space, and it wouldnt have to be in sam's case, either.
he's a dad that's there for cora day in and day out, he just never got the chance to grow out of the panic stage of a parent worried the first fever is going to kill the baby. he didn't have his dad because he had to get out to protect himself, he doesnt have a mom because of how long she's been dead, and lillian checked the fuck out at an early stage apparently. so sam was left to be the nervous wreck trying to keep history from repeating itself. the man's flying blind in the face of all the combined generational trauma of himself, his father, and his ex, all while trying not to fuck up shaping a human life.
you're damn fucking right he keeps cora glued to his side, i legitimately do not think his own ptsd would allow him to do otherwise without someone like the dusty to come and and go "hey dude, maybe its time we read some emotional intelligence and trauma books so we can start getting cora into a stable environment for literally the first time in her life? also im going to teach her gun safety for my own sanity because you keep letting her walk all over you and its scaring the fuck out of me thinking my daughter is going to try to raid a pirate ship at 15 because no one taught you proper boundaries."
5: his morals
its been 30+ years and his father wont let go of arguing and micromanaging long enough to try to understand his son. lillian is a workaholic who believes her only inherit value is what she can provide to an organization that views living, breathing human beings as occasionally expendable while screaming about its pursuit of freedom and equality.
sam coe is a man who got told what he was supposed to be his entire life, tripped into drugs and crime in an angry, sheltered act of rebellion, and walked away from it all with a very skewed, very flawed interpretation of morality as a result.
lillian and his father are the clear moral compasses in his life. like yeah, sure, he'll talk about how cora is his driving force until he's blue in the face. and he's not lying!!! he's not even technically wrong. she is his active motivation day in and day out. but she is not his Morality. she hasn't developed enough as a person to be able to be that kind of beacon. she's a kid rushing herself through childhood because she thinks that will make her better and no one in her life recognizes it enough to stop it. she shouldnt have to be the moral guide for someone who's supposed to be guiding her
sam cant let go of the ranger envy. he couldnt stomach being around it, but he cant look at that discomfort long enough to identify why. he can walk into a bank and plain as day go "ah, don't you hate the smell of capitalism," but he can't bring himself to blink the stars out of his eyes long enough to ask why the rangers are so willing to put smugglers to death without trial. sam has enough awareness to identify the system is flawed, but he doesnt have the guts to really stare that down
he'll make cracks about walter having too much money and influence, but he wont actually mention how he and his wife are the root cause of an extraordinary amount of pain and suffering and perfectly avoidable manslaughter as a result of their business. i get that constellation runs as a dont as dont tell organization, but if sam's going to give me shit about nabbing a paper weight from a guy's desk, i think we should talk about how he doesnt display anger for walter's business practices.
sam coe, at his heart, is a dreamer who doesn't want to look too close at things. he was taught that some things just Are, and looking for too many answers will find you trouble. he's got the spirit of an explorer dampened by a lifetime spent under cops.
you can hear it in his voice whenever he talks about how proud he is of cora for being a goddamn prodigy. you can hear the wonder and the excitement there. you can hear the curious kid in him that probably got pushed out of the way while he was trying to shape himself into a Proper Coe
i think sam coe is a dreamer who was forcibly taught to fear learning as a child, and thats the real tragedy of him.
so let's start to tie our bow here.
sam is a man who, in a way that only a privillaged kid can, stumbled into neon's life of drugs and smuggling and self harm through destructive behavior with both eyes firmly shut.
he didn't fall into drugs after a lifetime of being submersed in the culture of it. he didnt take them because he grew up surrounded by people that just knew that's all life was ever going to hold. he didnt get into smuggling because he was starving. he didnt take on his first "criminal act" because there was a life and death battle going on somewhere in his life.
this man was drowning in guilt and shame centered around not "being a proper coe" by the time he was free of his father's control, by all accounts. you can hear how much self hatred he has over the memory of that time in his life. look, im not going to say that age and recovery doesnt come with regret, but he talks about it like degeneracy and something to be guilted about rather than just... living life. like so what you did some drugs?? so what you did a capitalism no no?????
corporations arent people. you shouldnt steal from them because itll put YOU at risk, but under no circumstance should anyone hold onto any guilt for stealing from them. money is fake and capitalism murders people every hour of the day. fuck the system, its fucking rigged, look out for you and yours while capitalism is stealing your natural resources and making private homesteading prosecutable (translation: in our actual, real life here, the government can throw you in jail for building a house without a permit. go look up at the sky and think about the moral journey humanity had to take to get us to that point, and then come talk to me about how i shouldnt encourage people to steal from corporations)
anyways back to the video game, as far as the "what if he was unknowingly smuggling something like organs or weapons" argument, there's no desire for me to defend it, tbh. i dont view crime as a personality brand the way cops do. someone being convicted of a crime doesnt make me see them as lesser, it makes me see them as a person who did a bad thing. i do bad shit all the time. we all do. we're human. sometimes there's an excuse for the behavior, and sometimes there isnt. that's not the end of the world. you own up to your actions, you apologize, and you put in the effort to make amends that fit the situation. end of story. the obvious exception to that being when someone you have victimized tells you to fuck off because they dont want your further involvement.
yes. yes there are people in the world that are genuine monsters that spend their time and energy looking for ways to do the cruelest shit imaginable to their fellow human beings. but those are fucking outliers, so no, im not going to let a conversation about morality be derailed by a fraction of a percent of the population
but people (like the rangers) who aren't ready to look at the whole picture of context, who would rather hyper focus on the unbending rule of the land, don't see that. they see a "type" of person once a crime has been committed rather than "a person who found themselves in this scenario"
sam was raised by cops. he fundamentally does not understand how biased his own view is. he'll sometimes make a vague mention of crime being a necessity, but you can hear how many strings are attached there just from the way he talks about it. he truly views crime as a black and white subject with exceptionally few slivers of grey to be found. you can hear the "law and order is what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom" in his voice whenever he talks about how the rangers are "good people" he just "didnt fit anymore" and it's heartbreaking
he'd be so much better off if he would take a moment to reevaluate his priorities and look a lot closer at that guilt he carries and why he carries it. i think it would even help him better connect with cora in the long run. it would for sure give him a better handle on why letting his daughter take on college courses this early in her life isnt something to brag about. its a bad sign that she's pushing herself to Be Something in the exact same way he used to. he just doesn't recognize it because her way is "healthy" by society's fucked up view of child prodigies
tl;dr
i don't need to fix sam coe. he's stubborn, traumatized, and sheltered, not broken.
give that man good enough head and i'm absolutely sure he could be talked into reading some -clutches pearls- marxist literature

[ID: ten photos showing a hand bound book. the book has a light, coppery brown cover and olive green spine. the opening and closing pages are textured, metallic grey and light, textured brown. the title page shows the title "lost time.". there is a two page spread of collages in full color, one of them various wild west and cowboy imagery, the other showing a starry night sky with constellations, mountains, and various animals. the chapters are titled after songs, with pages showing mercury by sleeping at last, NFWMB by hozier, and boreas by the oh hellos. the pages go up to 219. the final two images show the book in the process of being made, with supplies spread out on a kitchen table with the ravening war playing on a laptop and a black cat watching on, and a close up of the pages being stitched together. end ID]
yall <33333
i wanted to share one of my birthday presents which is just. genuinely one of the sweetest gifts i've ever gotten. i hadn't posted it already cause i had to Savor it for a bit first (read through the entire thing and hold it and stare at the collages forever and ever) but it is time
so this is lost time. a collection of stories about my homegame lost township. titled after a line i wrote in one of those stories. they were collected, put in chronological order, given song titles (the npcs and locations in the game are all named after musical artists/bands/songs), and then formatted, printed, and bound by @paladinbaby
it has stories in it from me, faun (paladinbaby), hollis (@masculinepeacock), and leo (@punkbarbarian) and has three gorgeous collages made by sav (@grasslandgirl)
i had to autism pace around my house for a full hour after i got the package. i was just so utterly speechless at how thoughtful and kind and perfect it was. you can really tell how much care went into making it and reading everyone's stories in chronological order really has me feeling some sort of way
also there's a playlist that goes with it to represent all the stories so now i get to be autistic about my book when i can't sit down and read it too <333
im just still flabbergasted and wanted to share with some fellow nerds who might appreciate it :') everyone look!!! blorbo book!!!

i guess a personal disconnect i always feel with RPG story discussion is that more than with any other medium there is a desire from fans to see a story be About them as the player character. i do get if you are a character inhabiting a world its most fulfilling when that is acknowledged in certain ways to an extent, but in many stories in many other formats you rarely see people want everything to revolve about the Protagonist character in that particular manner, to want the protagonist to be the one that directs the situations and receives recognition and never plays second fiddle to anyone elses ideas - id say elsewhere youll see people actively want things for side characters to the degree they get annoyed when the main character becomes such a centripetal force. but in games this 'everything funnels around the protagonist' focus is something many writers consciously aim for instead, and for good enough reason, i suppose, since if they don't there does seem to be observable backlash. this isn't about any one game, it's just a recurring pattern in discussions of many that i dont tend to relate to, & that probably makes my thoughts on some topics differ. why people love early dark knight questline in xiv because a character will go 'these pathetic NPCs are always requesting your help - Boo Hoo Please Can You Save Me And My Loved Ones - without giving you proper recognition for the hard work of being a hero, or caring about Your hardships' and why i actually didnt like fray at all when i first played through that section. well, so it goes.

March Media Diary Thing 2024
This one's a weirdo! I'm typing this first paragraph after the fact, because it's the 30th instead of the exact end of the month like i wanted to post it . This post's a two-phaser, just because the way i typed this one out was in a " Live thoughts as fresh as i got them on the day i did stuff " kind of format. I didn't realize that there'd be so many more embeds then in febuary and january, but i guess it's just that kind of thing where you end up doing alot or doing the same but having more to say on it because its Now and not Before? I guess? I dunno. Everything below this space was gonna be from the start of the month , approaching towards the end. Okay, see you at the end of the second media diary post, now ! I'm gonna mix up this one and like unlike the last two i'm gonna try and write to this as i finish stuff instead of leaving it all until the end of the month, i think. im wondering if it'll make my thoughts more consise or not, but honestly, i have no idea! the main thing i think that gets lost out from this is the fact that i'll probably have less personal anecdotes about the month itself. Ohhhh.... MIGHTY SWITCH FORCE! < Silliest 3DS Home Screen Jingle >
Tumblr media
i'm not giving this one a docism as a title just because it's kind of embarrasing to make too much more focal then it is, but the game's visual design and the way it flaunts itself does kind of make it a little distracting, but, i guess, more then anything else i've played from wayforward. um
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i dont think its nessisarily a bad game or anything its perfectly alright. its like a little short for the price it retailed at on 3ds at least but its like. mediocre good i think . its not like bad or anything. its mostly just a game that sells itself with cute girls. which is fine i guess. like the game design Holds but the games focus is kinda scattershot, but whatever. it doesnt overstay its welcome or anything. the design's sound its just kind of okay all around NO MORE HEROES 2 - DESPERATE STRUGGLE < voice clip game of all time >
Tumblr media
unintentional misogyny theming in this media diary oh no
Tumblr media Tumblr media
coincidentally as i was playing i learned that the day i chose to start this game came out 3 years after the first game, which, coincidentally , lines up with the game's actual in-universe timeline iif my opinions on this game lines up itll be like, (9) years until i play the next one thats for sure
Tumblr media
ok so my story with this series is that i played the first game accidentally completely handicapping my own experience with it because i didnt know you could upgrade your stuff in it and thus made everyone in the ggame into a big dumb hp sponge that wasnt enjoyable to figght and despite my best efforts to try and like this game more ( And, i will say, despite the very prevalent appeals to the male gaze, it CAN be charming ! ) i also took entirely way too long to learn about switching weapons worked functionally, just because despite SEEING the tutorial prompt for weapon switching, i didnt put it together because it takes a bit longer to activate then you'd expect, and thus, never used it. Oops! but yea this game mostly just stands on its own crass nature and in that respect its both very self aware and self indulgent. if you like that kind of vibe youll enjoy the game and its style or be mostly indifferent/uncomfortable with it . Shrug! shinobu is pretty cool. u get to play her after the events of the first game and its neat.
Tumblr media
one thing i like about this games like direction is that its very well established that nobody in this game is a good person like even remotely and in that aspect it does get to explore cool stuff i can appreciate. i like that much. i tthink my favorite boss conceptually is the big robot you fight at one point in the battle royale segment. but id mostly consider this game as kind of a gimmick. i can see elements in there that'd make it a classic to a certain brained kind of person, but it doesnt appeal to me. i did wanna try and i did get at least to the very end until the final boss, at least. people say thats one of the worst final bosses in video games period and i gotta say they didnt lie shit doesnt really work
Tumblr media
i got endeared by this sign , so i took a screenshot of it . i also like the crickets in the bug minigame.
Tumblr media
pretty good though the games just kind of middle of the road for me overall. i didnt hate it enough to not completely finish it and as of typing this and as is its only 3/9 , so i might still truck through the final battle of this game, but, i wont really guarentee or force myself after 3 hours straight of it ----- ok nevermind literally the next day first thing when i woke up i first tried the guy lol games charming its just very peculiar
Tumblr media
get fucked idiot SUPER MARIO BROS DELUXE
Tumblr media
I technically started this last month but this is the month where i actually sat down and finished it just because MAR 10 ran around so like. might as well fish out some random mario sidescroller to play next also. its short and ive heard some ssay its like definitive mario 1 but the way mario's speed + the screen crunch make it kinda sloppy in a way. limitations of a gameboy color i know but i guess as a standalone way of playing mario 1 its not like. the worst in the world . ive never actually finished mario 1 before on my own so this is a new experience for me !
Tumblr media
if you think the 3ds being retro in the modern day is extra fucked up, consider the fact that this version of mario 1 came out 14 years after the original....!!!! if you think the ds being retro in the modern day is extra fucked up, consider the fact that this version of mario 1 came out 14 years after the original....!!!!
Dōbutsu no Mori ( The Animal Crossing Anime Movie ) < Ough-est main character >
Tumblr media
Watched this one again for the second time in a discord movie night! A very sweet and nice little movie with very very very cute characterrs. i see the able sisters on the screen and i clap
Tumblr media
whats wrong with her
Tumblr media
shes like a frog anyway the movies cute and theres aliens at the end. id describe it as a very loving adaptation of an animal crossing player's imagined version of events going on in an animal crossing gamecube-era town. though the biggest thing of all that endears me is AI i think theyre so silly looking
Tumblr media
Pictured : Another Silly Subject KERO BLASTER
Tumblr media
another game ive played many times before, but, considering my recent cave story fix, i felt drawn to playing it again. i still think its a cute and extremely solid sidescroller game..aaaa ithink everyone should give it a try if thats ur kind of game. also theres lots of very good video game enemies in this
Tumblr media
very simple but effective art direction theres like a very nice feeling of atmosphere to it ( cool game ) idk what else to say ive playedd this game like five times before and this is a media diary for documenting new feelings and thoughts and not for like full on game reviews, i think. < Mid-Month Side Note >
Tumblr media
i still havent completed this game's story mode to this day, but, recently, cus' the efforts of the team 0% team ( group of crazy freaks with the sole goal of making sure every mario maker 1 / 2 level gets cleared ) ive been driven to try and finish my super world recently. i might feel like showing off the levels ive made at the end of the week,as well, but it's honestly really satisfying, even if i know that the userbase for this game's comparitively shrunk since launch. idk! its fun to make mario levels. i think its satisfying and ill do it even if nobody plays them. also apparently i forgot to turn off my nso subscription so thats why im extra driven to upload lots of levels while i have it. I still hate how NSO is a paid service attached to online. it just kind of paywalls large swaths of games that don't need it and it's just dumb, evil, corporate greed. Ugh! That's the price of gaming in the modern era, i guess....
Tumblr media
PETAL CRASH < Thank you, Bison...! >
Tumblr media
game i've only played very recently, and arguably, doesnt fall under regular completion criteria, as it's mostly meant to be played on a whim in short bursts ( it does have a short story mode, though, plus a bunch of challenges i haven't played yet..! ) ( I might not be smart enough, for those... ) , but that doesnt really matter! This game is absurdly , amazingly, adorably adorable! !! !
Tumblr media
Look at these things!
Tumblr media
Ouuu!
Tumblr media
Fairy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! aside from having an adorable fairy character that appeals to every aestetic i love, its also a decently digestable GBC styled puzzle game ! thats really fun!! and ive been playing it on steam deck, where, i think, it really shines!! the character design in it is really good!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i've yet to master it , as it's pretty fast paced, but its essentially a match game that bumps stuff togetheer good with cute characters like puyo. i havent interacted with that series before but i have played kirbys avalanche and star stacker and this is pretty fun like those. if you like those games you'll like this.
Tumblr media
Thanks to my BF for buying this game for me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth < most symphony of the night award >
Tumblr media
the docism is kind of demeaning but this game is really solid i finished it just now in 6 hours ( 3/21 ) ( Wait, those numbers add up to 6! wow! ) i think this games strongest suit is how drop dead gorgeous the sprite art is . like . holy shit there are giant gorgeously animated ps1 quality era crisp pixel perfect sprites just everywhere
Tumblr media
the picture quality google images gave me doesnt do it justice but there are just like these fantastically rendered fantasy sprites wherever you wanna look for it and it just reminds me how awesome the ladybug developer team is. i think in terms of indie studios ive gotten attached to this is definitely like a dev i eagerly cant wait to see what they do next in the metroidvania sphere. like. considering the source material the actual designs dont stray too far from like what " conventional " fantasy looks like,( A little basic ) , they still kept my attention just from the number of moving parts and shit. and like. mechanically this game is actually pretty neat. they make you juggle a whole lot of projectiles on screen, but it becomes pretty managable when you learn how the two-prong element system works to be pretty engaging ( It reminds me alot of cave story's weapon system, actually! ) ( really cool! ) https://clan.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/images//36872249/d5f18e9ecfb93d0547f6ccf894cd2e0bab2d12c1.gif WHAT???? tumblr posts have a 20 image limit! What! i didnt know about this! i think websites should let u post as many cool images as you want. i should make a neocities for these at some point if i keep doing them...... regardless i think this game is awesome even if the story is kind of like throwaway ( saying this as someone who hasnt engaged with the source material yet, which there apparently is, so maybe thats not a fair thought. on the games steam community page though i saw a gif of the main character in an anime adaption wiggle her ears around with a silly face, so maybe it'd appeal to me if i look into it? Huh. ----- PART TWO WILL BE POSTED SOME TIME IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS FROM THE EMBEDDING ISSUE -------------------

hi again!! im the same anon with the niki song reccs! im glad you appreciated my first ask cuz i was nervous that itd look like an unsolicited reccommendation 🥹
can i just ramble a bit more because—PLEASE the stage play format!! ive only read a few ever but the way kaeya's face is almost always shadowed or turned away from the audience to show his shady-ish and closed-off nature⁉️ how it ties in with his in-game-all-the-world's-a-stage thing⁉️ the way the fic plays around the concepts and thin lines of truth and lies, secrets, show and pretend⁉️ I AM ALL FOR ITTT 😩🩷🫶 and the way you describe the setting, its also very reminiscent of like, the paper storybook animation mondstadt had in some of its cutscenes!! every time i read it i can imagine myself in a proscenium, thrust, or black box stage akzjdjfkdsk
also if you dont mind me asking, what are some songs in your playlist for my heart, your song? id love to give them a listen!! 🩷
omg no anon you’re all good!! i loooove song recs like all the time!! and i also just think its really sweet you have songs that you associate w a fic of mine 😭 like i could cry forever 😭😭💗
ANDDD 😭😭 the fact that you picked up on kaeya’s staging!! anon!! i’m so glad that it came across!!! even in writing scenes for stories and not plays, i think about the like “staging” of them quite a lot, often like i’m an audience member myself and i’m always trying to find unique “stage pictures” or like…..these “pictures” that convey something, like in theater. and i loved the idea of having kaeya’s face and staging always away from the audience until he reads the letter at the end of act ii!! and i could CRYYY to compare the scenes to the mondstadt storybook 🥺🥺💗💗 waahhhh thank you so much this fr means the world to me oh my god 💗💗
i do not mind at all!! my heart, your song has a very long playlist with a lot of live music on it bc the reader is a performer!! also some from musicals where i took inspo on the kinds of songs reader was performing!! here are some of my favs on that like 4 hour long playlist:
1. this live more acoustic version of Venus as a Boy by Bjork
2. Would That I by Hozier
3. Lover’s Desire by Anais Mitchell for more upbeat “chase” scenes as i call them—lots of flirting and playing and falling.
as things start to get angstier and reader gets more reckless:
4. Hymn / Her by Jordaan Mason
5. Eric by Mitski
6. I Don’t Care Much from the 1998 Broadway Cast Recording of Cabaret (this is actually the song i kinda envisioned reader playing at diluc’s in the postface to scene ix—or something like this)
7. this live version of Shrike by Hozier
and for some softer, more healing ones that are towards the end of this playlist, and that i’ve been writing act iii to!
8. No One Else from the Broadway Recording of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
9. An Ending (Ascent) by Brian Eno
10. this piano version of Avatar’s Love from ATLA because I’ve always had a soft spot for this melody lol
sorry if this got kinda long 🙈🙈 but fr the playlist is actually like. 3 hours jfkdjska and i’ve tried to make all the songs flow into each other genre/sound wise….as well as have a complete arc of the story bc i’m just. insane LMAO
but thank you so so so much again—for your song recs previously and also your lovely thoughts and further curiosity for music 😭💗💗💗 it means a lot to me and makes me so excited jfkdjska

Book Collage 2023
Tumblr media
Collage of all the books I’ve read in 2023! This has been a fun little pet project for me for the past few months; I just really enjoy seeing all the covers together and playing around with organizing them in a way that looks cool. What’s included: all books (regardless of format), short stories, graphic novels, art books, VNs/multimedia novels, and poetry that I completed reading in 2023 (would include zines or plays as well except I don’t think I read any, at least not cover to cover). What’s not included: individual news/nonfiction articles, fanfiction (mostly bc it’s so much harder to track — I’m considering altering this next year if I do this again), individual chapters of ongoing serials (eg every new Black Butler chapter or Wayne Family Adventures episode from this year), works shared with me by friends that are not available to the general public, anything that was not archived in my Goodreads list that I forgot about before I decided to do this lol. Yes I did spend the last week figuring out what short things I had saved to read that I could use to fill in any holes.
NB: This is a value-neutral collection of things I read this year, not a rec list. Some of these are beloved favorites I am rereading for the tenth time. Some of them are new-to-me books that I absolutely loathed. Feel free to ask my opinion if you’d like to know what I thought of a specific book.
Thanks again to @fluffyblue-multifandommess for recommending software to make this with!!

not even being resentful or engaging in bad faith here i genuinely think social justice voyeurs on tumblr got burnt out on reading critiques of stuff they didnt have the energy or drive to negotiate with in their personal lives.
this happened around 2017 ish, maybe before the twt exodus, when at some point the voiceless masses stopped reblogging those deeper critiques based on years of foundational build-up bcuz so many ppl were, until then, just suspending their disbelief for their "listen to marginalized voices" performance, and whatever that breaking point was made them shift from "nuanced interrogation" to "passive survival".
like during the pandemic for ex people got upset and were very smart sometimes, and then people got so mad at people getting upset, and then we all sucked back in to our most comfortable self-affirmations like how humor was one of the only things keeping intangible friend groups together. sure as hell cant bond forever over complex trauma.
my god the elevation of humor as like a social object over all critique and action... the virology of privately shared memes, the black and white publicity of thoughtfulness; if youre not fully entrenched in or committed to alternative lifestyles then the role humor plays in your group identity formation will be of status quo comfort.
humor pulls the ends of something we know and plucks it to make the sound of our laughter, with the distance and tension between the poles producing the frequency. and the thing about comfort is that... well actually i dont care to get into it like that. all i know is that nostalgia and comfort are crazy for anyone under, like, 45-50 at this point, and any kinda of meme can serve that purpose.
we dont see these objects of humor as any thing. they exist only in our appreciation, a prompt without cause. its so odd to me because i feel like it was only yday that ppl were unafraid to get long-winded about something seemingly innocuous, but now anything serious over a joke is just totally inappropriate.
i feel like so many ppl have jettisoned their critical compassion for the sake of small pleasures. sometimes i dont blame them because if i could find a cheap laugh somewhere id take it, but then i come back to my reality where cheap laughs are blatantly reactionary. it makes me wanna throw up a lil what my friends friends can detach from enough to laugh at.
see thats the thing about humor being elevated to its status as a social object -- we dont see anything for what it is or what it does, we detach it from social life but now our social life from it. we need to push back against "maybe the curtains are just blue", because its seriously meddling with ppls willingness to interrogate how we ourselves interpret seemingly neutral messaging!
its not intentional, because nobodys signing up to shill for their prison anymore, but we carry with us all the funny little stigmas that feel good to pluck, and it feels even better to pluck them in an orchestra! we "propagandize" ourselves and each other: the "cop in our head" seeks safety and order, and she conditions our social instincts to decay and stasis instead of growth. be skeptical of comfort!
we are given the tools to make meaning and play with it, but so many ppl are just too tired to consider who made those tools! the value we derive from humor and its conditions comes from somewhere, and its our responsibility to trace the ethical lineage of our actions imo!

TAGGING: @sadistpet , @mayxthexforce (your choice of character ♡), and anybody else who feels like doin this!
[ QUIZ LINK ] || apologies for any formatting issues on this post, I'm on mobile so it's probably ugly 😔
MUSE: Artyom Chechyotikov
Tumblr media
50% — THE ADVOCATE
The Advocate is the one everyone wants on their side. In the name of justice, they are not afraid to challenge authority or speak up for others.
31% — THE ATHLETE
The Athlete's focus and drive are unparalleled. Staying healthy and being fit are paramount to them (as for winning, that doesn't hurt, either).
19% — THE ROYAL
When the Royal walks into a room, they command attention. They are the one in charge, and they enjoy reaping the rewards of their hard work.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
After getting over my initial surprise at Artyom being considered an advocate, I can see why it makes sense for him. These results are pretty accurate to how I want to portray him!
While the justice part of his advocacy is... questionable, given his allegiances, he is very much a team player. There's a reason Makarov chose him to be a commander over Konni's infantry. Why Makarov chose him to be one of his closest guards. Artyom is dutiful to Makarov's cause, and fully believes that they're doing the right thing. Well... mostly. He has his questions, but does well to address those in his own time.
As for athleticism, that's just a given. To be a juggernaut of his stature, he has to be tough. His armor is 150 pounds (minimum), his minigun is roughlu 80 pounds, and he not only has to continually carry it all... He has to be able to move fast. To run and jump in that shit. He's very proud of the fat he's put on while strength changing.
And that sense of royalty almost entirely comes from Makarov. From him being selected and promoted. To becoming a trusted confidante. He gained a good sense of confidence while working for Spetsnaz, but it really flourished under Konni's banner.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
BONUS MUSE: Marina Chechyotikov
Tumblr media
38% — THE VISIONARY
Leave it to others to live by the status quo. The Visionary is interested in new ways of seeing, solutions not yet imagined, products not yet built.
33% — THE INTELLECTUAL
The Intellectual is the ultimate dinner-party guest. Engaging questions and thoughtful debate are their trademarks.
29% — THE ROYAL
When the Royal walks into a room, they command attention. They are the one in charge, and they enjoy reaping the rewards of their hard work.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Also accurate to how I'm envisioning her whilst creating her and Artyom. The two of them are very similar, but they like... it's kinda shown with their results, but they fall into that "brains versus brawn; two sides of the same coin" dynamic. Their personalities are just, like that. There's also the traditionalist values of the society and environments that come into play, and the difference in expectation between Marina and Artyom that have led to accentuating those differences between them. Anyway—
Marina being considered a visionary is... the best way to summarize her. She sees the world around her as a collection of puzzle pieces, or maybe building blocks. She wants to twist and turn everything to fully understand it. To see what can change, what can't, and what needs to be cast aside or torn down in order to build the "better picture". It's what inspired her work for the government, and then for Makarov.
And a lot of that plays into her intellectualism. Like Artyom, she isn't shy to challenging authority or putting her foot down. She's just more willing to stab at every angle of the problem and dig to uncomfortable depths. That passion for it is why she's become the "master interrogator", and earned a bit of a reputation outside of Konni for being something to fear id one is captured alive.
Naturally, like with Artyom, this led to a high sense of self-confidence. Marina knows what she wants and what she doesn't. She knows her worth, and she fought for her place at the table. Damned be anybody who dares question it or try to take it away.

Can I make a fanfic request of a launchpad x actress reader where he's nervous to ask her out cause she's a top notch famous actress.
A/N: I made this more GN but leaning towards femme reader, also sorry for weird formatting I’m posting this from my phone
Tumblr media
Launchpad x Reader
:Too shy to say hi:
:Mutual friend, actor/actress, fluff:
(Y/n) and drake were on set for ‘Bushroot: the scientist beyond the roots’, (y/n) was reading role for Dr.bushroot’s one-sided love interest Rhoda Dendron and Drake was just there due to his affiliation with the canceled darkwing duck movie. But Drake and (y/n)’s affiliation go back to highschool so it was a happy surprise to see him again. “Oh (y/n) there is someone id like you to meet!” he chimes up from his spot next to them, (y/n) looked up from their script with a curious glint in their eye to see Drake leaning over his chair trying to coax someone over from the shadows. It took a little more than convincing but soon out of the shadow of the crew buffet table stepped out a large strapping duck rubbing one of his arms sheepishly as a red blush seeped out from his beak.
“(y/n) this is Launchpad, Launchpad this is (y/n), we went to highschool together.” (y/n) stood from their seat and went to shake Launchpad's hand “Nice to meet you!” They chimed sweetly which only made the large duck shy away even more, Launchpad had to be elbowed, pushed and prodded just to take (y/n)’s hand to shake it. The moment was tense and awkward but once that painful handshake was done (y/n) was called to the set to shoot a scene.
Hours later (y/n) was back at their trailer, hair a mess and sweat plastered onto their forehead as they groggily pushed open the trailer door. What they really wanted now was a shower, a nice long and warm one, but the thought of the relaxing shower was smushed under the heel of fate as Drake and Launchpad sat on their couch. (y/n) smiled, only a bit annoyed at the intrusion but decided to entertain their guests for the night.
One night turned into two, and two to three and soon (y/n) found themself being quite fond of the pair, especially launchpad, as Launchpad opened up (y/n) noticed how much of a sweetheart he was and how passionate he could be for the DWD franchise. One night during an after shoot escapade they were playing Jackbox party games as a pre-celebratory party since the film was nearing its completion stages. The trailer was filled with laughter and gasps as they played T.K.O. (y/n) was snuggled into Launchpad a bit causing the big dumb hunk to blush, and sheild his phone, as he slowly reciprocated by lowering his arm around their shoulders.
The day came and tickets to the premier were being passed out to the staff and actors as well as an extra plus one ticket, Unbeknownst to the launchpad as he nervously stood at (y/n)’s trailer door some very pricey tickets hidden behind his back. He reached out a shaky fist and knocked on the metal door, there stood (y/n) in a satin dress/pants suit, their hair all done up in an elegant manner, it made Launchpad’s heart skip beats and his face turn into a tomato. “Hey LP, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be with Drake?” they asked calmly, trying not to sound mean when asking the simple question.
Launchpad swallowed hard as he began to stutter “W-well you see i uh..” he avoided eye contact with the smaller person but eventually found it inevitable as the gazed into their (e/c) orbs, he coughed into his free fist to clear his throat. Just then he shakily revealed the premier tickets he nabbed to (y/n), “would you like to go to the premier with me?” he immediately looked to the ground in fear of rejection. (y/n) blushed as they leaned against the door frame to their trailer, eventually they began to snicker which erupted into a light hearted laugh causing LP to look up in confusion.
(y/n) wiped soft tears from their eyes as they looked at Launchpad “actually,” they inquired, pulling out their own set of tickets, “i was gonna ask you the same thing!” Both of them beamed brightly as LP pulled (y/n) into a hug, ecstatic that he was their choice of a date. “But question,” asked (y/n) as LP’s eyes snapped open in worry “why didn't you ask me out earlier? I though i was dropping clear enough hints.” jested (y/n) lightly. Launchpad took a step back and rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly “well you see, i was always so nervous, it wasn't just because you are super pretty, super nice, super cool..” he went on causing (y/n)’s smile and ego to inflate. “But it was also because of your status, I mean you’re a super cool movie star! I didn't want you to lose future opportunities because of an idiot like me.”. Hearing that shattered (y/n)’s heart as they gently walked forward and put their hand on LP’s cheek “Oh LP.. you’re not an idiot, you're a sweet and kind young man and i'm glad that i met you, i don't care if i lose future opportunities that just shows how greedy those companies are and i do not want to do business with them if they act like that.” LP smiled, his brows furrowed upward , he gently pulled (y/n) in by their waist and mustered up enough courage to kiss them.
(y/n) was taken back but soon melted into the kiss smiling as they cuddled closer into Launchpad's chest. “Wow, you went from being too shy to say hi, to smooching on me within the span of a month, you're quite the charmer aren't you Mr.McQuack?” That caused LP’s face to once again erupt in a collage of red’s as (y/n) chuckled holding onto LP’s hand beginning to drag him towards their car for the long awaited premier night.

I need, for when they finally have their *conversation* for it to be long single takes. Few edits. Id prefer a bottle episode. Stuck somewhere. No choice but to talk it out. In the words of Abed from Community "They're wall-to-wall facial expression and emotional nuance"
Basically I want a play.
Do i want the script to have an outline and have M and C improv the rest? Also probably.
Sorry! I think this got buried in my notifications! I don't get very many asks and I just saw this in my inbox which I never usually look at.
This was a lot so I figured out how to add a cut. See below.
Generally, I'm not a *huge* fan of bottle episodes. Pragmatically speaking, bottle episodes serve a purpose in the TV industry as a low-budget episode because they only need to use one set for the whole episode and there are no location shots and relatively few actors and probably no extras. That puts a huge amount of pressure on the writing and the actors and it is, as you say, more of a play format which makes sense given everything I just mentioned. Most of the time they feel, to me, like the writers and production team are trying to *do* something in a way that as an audience member I don't actually want to be aware of. Like maybe they're swimming beyond their depth. It feels forced, is what I'm saying. Forced and itchy and uncomfortable and I find myself checking the time every 2 minutes waiting for it to end. So I almost never hope for a bottle episode.
BUT I have really liked Mariska's bottle episodes on SVU. I'm thinking specifically of Something Happened, Part 33, The Year We All Fell Down, and 911. None of which were perfect bottle episodes, as I recall, because they did have some movements to other sets and some location shooting and things like that. But any 43-minute show that has Mariska on my screen for 40 of those minutes is fine by me. And she tends to do really well with them. I get the feeling she enjoys the challenge and so she puts a lot of herself into them. She won a freaking Emmy for 911 after all. I also think if it was an EO episode, she would be so beyond focused on making it perfect bc this has been her dream really since day one imo. (There's a clip floating around if Chris giving an interview in season one and Mariska runs up and hugs him and says, "He's playing a detective that's in love with his partner," or something along those lines.) And I think Chris would be great at it too. So all that to say, I do think the actors are up to the challenge.
I worry about the writing a bit though. While I understand where you're coming from, I'm not sure I'd agree about them just ad-libbing it bc to me this is something that needs to be pretty carefully thought out with a clear understanding of the implications of the words and a pretty specific memory of the past events they're discussing and the actors are great, but they've been part of this for 24 years and aren't going to remember everything. Someone needs to go back and reference old episodes. If a bottle episode happens, I want that script to be *crackling* with subtext. I want to hear Elliot apologize for not being there and Olivia say, "I know you can't spend your life looking over your shoulder to make sure I'm okay." I want them sharing a drink. I want her to have to blink a light at him to show she's okay. I want him to ask if anyone's taking care of her. And I want him to cradle her in his arms like he did in fault and spooked. I don't expect all (or realistically any) of that too happen, but I think a carefully, beautifully written script would do this moment the most justice. Idk if the writers are up to that or not, but they've been showing us things this season that (mostly) give reason to hope.
The actual plot of a bottle episode is where I get tied up though. SVU is a police procedural above all else and every other bottle episode they've ever done has been related to solving the mystery of a case. An interrogation, a hostage situation, a mystery girl on a phone, and argument in a court house waiting room. These are what we've seen before and what we would expect to see from a show like SVU. An EO bottle episode is uncharted territory. Is there a case that's going to be taking up half the plot? I cannot imagine them really talking unless they were alone so that rules out most of what we've seen before. (Although, Olivia having to interrogate Elliot for a crime while half the department stands on the other side of the window does sound *delicious*.)
A court house argument could work, with the aspects of the case hitting *all* the wrong buttons for them, but it's been done before. Some kind of escape room type scenario could be really fun and interesting. Where they're trapped somewhere and need to solve a mystery to get out. That could be on point and very them, but unless it feels like life-and-death, idk if there would be enough of a driving force to get them where they need to be emotionally.
If I were going to write a fic about it, it would be a situation where they were maybe chasing a suspect or investigating a location and no one really knows exactly where they are and they get hurt and trapped somewhere. Personal preference, I would have her more hurt than him. I want it to be kinda enclosed so maybe it's triggering her claustrophobia (which she has if it's my fic). I want him to need to pull some of her clothes off to help with her injuries and find her scars from William Lewis. I want her to ask him to take Noah if she dies. I want him to be in serious pain from his own injuries but feral to save her. Maybe in the end, his recovery time is worse bc he does something stupid to get them out. I think the fear of death and of missing their chance to be together might be what it takes to make it finally happen. These two are very stubborn. If they were just trapped in a room together with no other problems idk if they'd get there. (Maybe, he's pretty motivated now, so that would help. But idk if he's going to push her too hard if she's really fighting him in it.)
Also, they're gonna kiss if it's my fic, and imo, their grievously-injured bodies are about the only thing I think would keep them from going all the way the first time they kiss. And I don't mind that either, but the idea of them finally being together, but having to wait 6-8 weeks to get medically cleared for sex sounds really fun. The first day in the hospital is very *serious* but the second day features them both trying to check out AMA and him hobbling his way into her room and making out with her in a hospital bed. They're going to get busted multiple times by different people. And yes, realistically they should be traumatized, but things worked out in the end and they've got the world's best security blankets. And I think even Liv's shrink would tell her to go for it.

When it Rains It Pours: Luke Combs (sorry for formatting, I'm on mobile)
Pre- spider nephew au. Could be set in actual canon if you like.
Dan shakes off the water from his hat as he enters Montana’s bar. A rough night. Being dumped is never easy. He supposes it could be worse, with a lot more crying. The long scratch mark across his cheek is a bit of a down side. But he had treated it and now is moving on. The pain of loss would probably hit soon. After the numbness fades. Or when the sting of his cheek is no longer there. This is the last time. They had cut it off more than once before but Dan is tired. And he is never going to change his ways or what he does for a living. Not for his siblings and not for a date.
He smiles as he catches sight of Montana and Ox relaxing and makes his way over to them. If there's one positive thing to take from tonight, it is that he gets to spend more time with his friends today. Ox greets him with a small head nod and Montana touches his shoulder, hand firm but friendly.
"Are you alright? I thought you had plans?"
Montana asks and Dan appreciates the concern. But he is alright.
"The plans undid themself. Which means I now have time to beat your butt in pool."
Montana rolls his eyes while patting his shoulder.
"Sure. Sure. You manage to do that and I'll believe that pigs fly."
"Maybe my lucks turned around."
"Id hope your skill has too if I were you."
Montana teases. They were both half joking. Montana always won unless Ox and Dan worked together. But Dan feels lighter than he had in months. Their games had been close before. He could beat Montana.
"How's about you and Ox play me?"
"How's about a one on one, bossman?"
Dan imitates Montana's accent a little, letting a smirk take over his face.
"Look whose confident! Fine. I win, you tell me about your busted face."
"And if I win, you have to teach me your family secrets on knife throwing."
Montana takes a second, considering.
"Aw heck, I'da taught you that for free. Fine. Deal."
They shake on it and then start to play. Dan lines up his shots and is careful in his maneuvers. He is playing the best pool of his life. This is better than faking a smile at a date that could flip to misery at any second. Or trudging through another breakup with the hopes that he could fix it. Giving up all together seems to be the best choice he has ever made. He knows that his fellow Enforcers would tell him what he did wrong. Would speak to him in moments of confusion. Would not walk out on him over trivial things. And so Dan plays, letting himself have fun. Ultimately he wins the game and grins up at a impressed Montana.
"I told you."
"Yeah, yeah. I hear you. Sorry for doubting my right hand man."
Montana says while giving him a shoulder pat. Dan grins. Not only did he beat Montana for once, he also got to learn a new skill.
"Come on, you got to show me knife throwing now!"
Dan is legitimately excited, having always loved picking up new fighting methods. Montana slowly nods and resets the pool table before they go. Montana leads him and Ox to another room and then starts showing Dan how to stand and hold his arms. A knife is handed over and after a few more instructions, Dan throws it, immediately getting a bullseye. Montana pats his back supportively and Dan grins a bit like a loon. Being dumped is perhaps the best thing that could have happened to Dan today.

Copying this directly from my Letterboxd review cause I wrote a fucking essay inadvertantly and I cant post it in just one place. There are no spoilers as I mostly just talk about the themes and what Kon's work means to me.
My Satoshi Kon obsession over the last week climaxes with his only series, and what a series it was. I'll have to stew on it a bit before i say it definitively, but this very well could be my favorite anime I've ever seen, and a strong contender up with Mr Robot and Sopranos for a favorite series period.
I have a troubled relationship with tv. I think most stuff these days that tries to emulate film (prestige tv so called) fails to capture the clarity of vision of a good film while maintaing the traps that hold tv back (having to structure itself around getting you to watch the next episode for one example). At times I feel like I wish tv never left its episodic phase, at least then you were guaranteed a complete story in 20-40 minutes.
The shows I mentioned before, including this one, all do something that most dramatic tv fails to do; and actually use the episodic format to divert from the core narrative and explore themes and characters in ways that a movie just really cant. You can have an entire episode that follows three characters who never show up again, you can have an episode structured like a play (Mr Robot), you can just have the characters get lost in the fucking woods for an entire episode and have it be one of the most memorable in the series (The Sopranos). Using the medium to experiment and take swings at different ideas and ways of conveying intentions to the audience, imo, is what tv needs to be if it really wants to elevate itself to something akin to or above the best films.
Paranoia Agent, as you can probably surmise from the five star rating, does just that. While the show is complete narrative with a defined beginning and end, the format is mostly episodic, typically following one or two characters, some of whom who never really play a big role in the series again. Kon has said that PA was his way of testing out ideas he had for films that he couldn't work in, and it definitley shows here.
I can see why some may be frustrated with the show taking the scenic route on a lot of things, i think its a testament to Kon's dedication to his own themes and ideas that he is able to explore them in so many different ways within a single series, and still have it all imo add up perfectly at the end. The show manages to cover themes of class and work anxiety, social exclusion, mental health struggles, personal responsiblity, escapist culture, responsibility, generational trauma, the fear and anxiety around the youth, and a littany of other themes that still manage to tie all together in a coherent way.
Kon's playfulness when it comes to the line between reality and imagination is core to this work as well. The central message of the show is explained explcitly, perhaps moreso than id like but the work still has enough elements open for interpretation that I don't think it crosses the line into beating you over the head with it.
Oh and the animation and music are great of course, I think that's a given with a Kon work tho. Having now seen all of Kon's major works I'm of course a bit let down that I'll never seen anything new from him. But if i've learned one thing from all that I've seen in the past week, the last thing Kon would want is for people to wallow in misery and wondering what could have been. Something doesn't have to be forever for it to mean something to you and better your life for having experienced it. I and countless others can say that Satoshi Kon's far too short life on this Earth is one that made an impact on us, and we're certainly better for being able to experience the art of such a thoughtful and creative person.
