Coffee's Random Rec List (take 1)

I have no explanation for this except that I've wanted to do more to promote other writers for a while, but I didn't know how to go about making rec lists and, well, mostly I was just lazy. So, basically, I'm going through my bookmarks and picking out some underrated gems. I can't say I'll do this with any particular frequency, and I'm mostly doing this tonight to procrastinate my own writing, haha. But also, this has been a crazy few days for me and I want to give back. So! 1. Friends who cook together... by @2manyfandoms2count

After Hawkmoth's defeat, Adrien Agreste finally gets a taste of freedom as he moves from the Mansion to his own flat, and from Lycée to University. He relies a little too much on food delivery for Marinette's taste, though. Maybe food won't be the only thing simmering in the kitchen as they learn how to cook together...

5 Chapters. Fun fact: this is the first fic I ever bookmarked on ao3. (Admittedly, I was reading a lot before I started bookmarking, but the fact that this fic made me take the leap says something). What can I say about this? Well, PRPR and cooking together? Idk why that wouldn't be enough right there. It's SO CUTE. I've definitely read it more than once.

2. If I’m evil, and you’re evil, then who’s stopping Hawkmoth? by @ninoisntluka

Multimouse is caught by Mayura and Hawkmoth. The only way to survive was to swear fealty to their cause. But Aspik refuses to let his friend go down this dark path alone, even if it means betraying the one he loves most. Actually, most of this could’ve been solved if either of them had actually talked with each other, but the mind games take on a life of their own. Watch two idiots who are essentially playing tic-tac-toe, but think they are playing 5-Dimensional chess, when the game is checkers.

Oneshot. I won't spoil more than the summary says. but this is pure crack/identity shenanigans. A fun and chaotic read.

3. undeniable by @zimtlein

For whatever unfathomable reason, Kagami decides to play matchmaker. She’s worryingly bad at it. So of course, Alya has to do as much damage control as possible.

Oneshot. This one is so funny! Kagami's trying to set up the love square, but like the summary says she's a terrible matchmaker, and it's peak comedy. It has great platonic Kagami and Alya interactions too!!

4. burning through the hours talking by @calico-and-lace

Stay a while, stay a while, stay here with me, lie here with me. I like me better when I'm with you. A love-square song fic played to the tune of I Like Me Better by Lauv.

Oneshot. This one starts with Adrinette snuggling on a rooftop in New York, and their relationship progresses in different Marichat and Ladynoir scenes over time. It's just really soft, and it works so well with the song!!

5. safe and sound by @agnes-is-wright

Adrien has nightmares, and finds comfort in an unlikely place. Or rather, person.

Oneshot. Hits right in the hurt/comfort feels. Adrien ends up calling Marinette for comfort in the middle of the night. Short but very sweet!

6. Totally Not a Rom-Com by @nomolosk

Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Graham de Vanily (formerly Agreste) meet for the first time on a trans-Atlantic flight to New York. Cuteness and fluff ensues.

Oneshot. No-Miraculous AU, but even if that's not normally your jam I urge you to give this one a try because it's freaking adorable. Also I've definitely wanted to do that whole falling in love on a plane thing HAHA. Needless to say...I have not been successful.

7. i say your name in hopes you hear it in the stars by @lilacteapot

Ladybug and Chat Noir have been separated for years after the defeat of Hawk Moth. No word has come from either since then, and Marinette hopes to see his shadow pass during her visits to the Trocadero even if the chances are slim to none. After a chance encounter, however, she may hear the familiar sound of her kitty's bell once again.

This is bittersweet but ends on a hopeful note, and it's so heartfelt! Plus, the writing is lovely. (I may be biased since this is one of my friends but shhhh!)

For the writers block/burnout thing, I have a few tips that I personally use, so I hope they help!

1) Caffeine. I usually have an energy drink when I know I’m going to be doing lots of work or writing, and that usually gets me in a writing mood for a couple of hours. Tea or coffee, while good sources of “clean” caffeine, make me feel a bit too cozy/homely and it makes it harder for me to do writing specifically. The energy drink (I prefer rockstars or monster, but watch those mg’s cuz they’re not the best for you) usually keeps me productive and on-task, and if it doesn’t? I switch to another task. In your case, it could just be a wip you have, or even some entirely new little blurb that doesn’t necessarily have to be posted.

2) Music, the kind that I’m into right now, something older, or even music that’s new to me/that I’ve never heard before. It’s good for the soul and good for the brain for inspiration. Relating to the last bit of #1, it can inspire you to write parts of a wip or a little oneshot or even a scene that you were inspired to write. Any writing is good writing, and if that little drabble gets the brain juices flowing, so be it!

3) Environment change! See, I have this fun little habit of sitting in my car post-class and chugging the rest of an a energy drink with a little snack while writing in a doc for a couple of hours. I typically don’t even realize how much time has passed, and I’ve written upwards of 3k words in one sitting over the span of like two hours. It’s a change of scenery of what I used to do when I write stuff, and it’s made me more productive! If you normally write on your phone in your room, try a different device in a different room! For example, use a laptop in the living room, a tablet on the kitchen floor, an old iPod touch in the bathroom, literally any combo that you can think of is worth trying! Sometimes your brain just needs that little bit of freshness to get the creativity flowing.

4) Other sources of inspiration! I mentioned music earlier, but reading other things (be it fanfiction, published books, or your own writing) can be a way to get your brain working again! Comping up with what-ifs can be useful, because if you get bored of that, then you can redirect the energy into writing something else! You can also look at art, like old museum type stuff, and make up a little story about the piece, then you can try and fit and mould that into something relevant to a current wip! Will it work in a planned story? Probably not, but it got you thinking and that’s what matters! Movies can also be good for this too.

5) Skipping scenes can be really helpful when writing in a lengthy wip that has a preplanned outline. You can always jump around in the story and write segments of dialogue that won’t be used yet, create some description for a future scene that might not be perfect or even good right now, but it’ll get you thinking about the wip. Me personally, if I have a chapter that I think needs more scenes or a scene rewritten, I make a whole new doc for it and just start spewing ideas and actual writing into it; that includes sentence changes in wording or structure, alternate scenes, bonus characters, dialogue thag I KNOW I’ll never use but it’s good except side anyway, etc. I can always go back to it, but it gives me some peace of mind. I also have docs separated by fandoms that’re filled with dialogue blurbs, mini-schemes, random descriptions, and the like. They might not lead to much in the separate doc, but when the time comes when you need inspo or to pull some content from it, you’ll have it on hand!

6) Math. Do some math. I’m dead serious. Some easy algebra or calc equations will either get your brain thinking or frustrated, and either way you can turn that around and put the energy into a wip. Been there, done that (usually when procrastinating lol), but it helps me redirect!

That’s about all I’ve got! I especially want to emphasize the caffeine, music, and environment change part of the list. A combo of that stuff has really helped me productivity, and I hope it can help you too! Remember that no matter how much or how little you write, it’s enough and YOU are enough. Hope your day is well!

I appreciate all this advice. The math might be something I try, at the very least I might try doing a Nancy Drew game on Master mode bc those typically help my creative side relax and my logical side get the reins.

Okay I haven’t updated Jack crap as of recently (I mean two weeks isn’t much but it’s a lot to me and my adhd brain as of right now.

Why haven’t I posted anything well… I decided because I was editing Chapter 6 of my fanfic that I should do some art for each of the chapters. Because if it’s going to be a month late it should have something that shows that I wasn’t just procrastinating I was doing something for the fanfic as well.

Now I have 4 WIPS for that. 2 finished chapter arts.

4 Unfinished WIPS for different rottmnt AUS. And to show that I am doing something you guys get to see the WIPS AND THE FINISHED art. (Yes I have gotten better hence why it’s taking me so long to get the art the way I want to present it. Because I’ll get to the point where I’m like. OMG I LOVE THIS- and feel as if I have done everything in my power to make it look pretty then get just a little better with lighting or background or make the characters themselves look just a little bit better and I’ll repeat the cycle. 😂🤣

This is a separated A.U. Where the EPF knew about the Yokai/Aliens when the turtles were created. They have located and captured many specimens to better know about these newfound species.

That’s all I’m really going to say for now. Since when I finish this overall art I’m going to release it, some character sheets, and a little of the plot!

Whumptober Day 4: Hiding Injuries

S3A Sasha and Grime have a talk about self preservation after a mission gone wrong.

Hello happy whumptober I'm just going to be smacking Sasha around for a few days don't mind me These are gonna be pretty short since I uh... procrastinated and literally just finished this with 50 minutes to spare on day 4. And they may be late. Rip. I tried. So uh fun fact this one is based on something that actually happened to me! I had this weird pain in my neck and then all of a sudden i couldn't move for like 4 hours. The human body is whack.

Canon typical violence ahoy, nothing too crazy!

It should have been a simple mission. Get in, steal the supplies, get out. But it’s never that simple, because if there is a god out there, it hates Sasha with a passion.

How long has she been training these frogs into an elite fighting force? A month, two months? Maybe more… time has lost most meaning. Wake up, train, go on missions, plan, sleep. Her days were never the same but always the same sort of goals or challenges, more fires for her to put out, more recruits to train, more sleepless nights of stress.

Today is no exception. Even before amphibia, she was never one for coffee, but now that she’s been living in a warzone for a while, she can’t help but miss the stuff. How else is she supposed to constantly be on her a-game? Rest? Relaxation? Pffft, no one has time for that! Not when King Andrias is building a robot army to destroy her home that she misses so desperately and has hurt and maimed and used the girls she loves so much like her own it hurts-

Ahem. Anyway.

They’re still getting the hang of things, still learning the ins-and-outs of Andrias’ fortresses, so the ones that aren’t cookie-cutter repeats of previous maps always throw them for a loop. This one is a factory that has a few extra security measures… she doesn’t want to give her group the credit of being the reason for beefed up security, she’s not that egotistical. One of the frogs’ slippery legs slides across a laser beam, something they’d never seen before. It’s unsurprising how they jump (ha) at the alarms that blare, totally confused as to how they’ve been caught. But Sasha doesn’t wait, doesn’t hesitate, grabbing the one (Wally…? Waldo?) and ducking him under her arm as she dodges a hailfire of turrets. The red hot lazers sear at her back, the heat so intense she can feel it even as she dodges.

She sets Willy down. “Stay here.” she advises. “I’ll turn off the alarms.”

“Yes ma’am!” He salutes, dead eye snapping open just briefly before shutting. He should probably try and pin it open, having depth perception would really help in the fight.

With a grunt, she turns back to the robots that have flooded the room. This part comes naturally to her, the slicing and dicing of steel, the ache in her muscles a familiar companion. A robot flies down from the ceiling, its wings buzzing angrily as its eyes narrow in on her. She throws her sword perfectly, stabbing it right in the chest. It goes down in a blaze of glory and takes out a few more robots along the way. Her sword burns in her hand from sizzling wires, but she pulls it out with a flourish, slicing through robots that rain bullets faster than she can even blink. She’s never going back to cheerleading, she thinks bemusedly. This is way more satisfying.

Finally, blissfully, the last robot goes down. She steps back, satisfied. The frog gives her a thumbs up. She can’t help but return it with a faint smile. These folk, despite their kindness, have a powerful warrior spirit that she can’t help but admire. They’re a lot like Marcy, in a way.

“Quite a show, miss!” The frog (Dolly…?) hops over. “Now let’s get the grub and get outta here!”

“Don’t have to tell me twice.” She agrees. These facilities are never fun, a stark contrast to the Amphibia she’s been used to. The frog turns around, and Sasha does as well, but her ears perk up at the faintest of hums. It’s a noise that they wouldn’t know; the sound of a fan whirring in a machine overheating.

She whips around to see the last robot, the one with a gaping hole in its chest, with eyes glowing and a final blast prepped in its arm cannon. “Get down!” She cries, running for her companion and tackling him to the ground. But not before a large blast of heat rockets through her shoulder, just grazing her neck and nearly hitting her ear. It cuts a clean line through her once pristine hair, now a ratted mess that lays dead on the floor.

Well. That’s one way to get a haircut.

The frog groans, before he comes to his senses and gasps. “Oh my gosh! Are you alright?” his hands hover, almost afraid to touch what he fears is a nasty burn.

Sasha blinks. Then she snaps her fingers. “Wally! That’s your name!”

The walk back to their snail is slow. Even by snail standards.

For some reason, her body just isn’t moving properly. It’s like everything is stuck in honey, her brain, her limbs, all of it. The world is slowing like a clock in desperate need of a wind up. But she chalks it up to adrenaline, and asks Wally to drive them back, which he does. She takes up residency on the back of the shell, half splayed out, with her front draped over the chair. Now that she’s not moving, now that she’s still, the slowness of the world begins to fade out, and something else takes its place: pain. A throbbing, searing pain that grows in intensity along her neck.

She remembers once, on what used to be the scariest day of her life, when she fell on her back at cheerleading. How she tried to get up, and a searing pain in her neck caused her strings to drop like a puppet. How all she could do was lie there and scream while the others got a teacher. She had to be carried to the nurse’s office, where she was diagnosed with a seized up muscle and given muscle relaxants. At the time, she’d been so scared she’d managed to paralyze herself, but now it seems almost silly.

Now it feels way more real.

Anytime the snail so much as runs over a pebble she can feel it. She can feel her spine literally burning from the inside out, there’s no other explanation. She managed to get stung by some bug and now there’s bug eggs eating her nerves or something. That sounds like an Amphibia thing, why not? But when she asks this of Wally, he goes “Ew, that’s disgusting! No we don’t have that!” and grumbles about how barbaric Earth must be in comparison.

Well. That’s concerning.

Because if she wasn’t stung, what’s causing this pain?

The answer hits her as the snail crosses a bump, jostling her neck and pushing a specific spot that makes her see white briefly. As the spots dance in her eyes, she finally recognizes the pain not as a sprained muscle, but as a sharp, stabbing, even torn one.

The turret, duh. She must’ve been hit when it cut off her hair. Sure enough, when she places a trembling hand to the spot, and pulls back, her glove is now damper and redder than before. Grime was gonna lose it , he always did when she got hurt. Speak of the devil, the snail finally enters Wartwood, where she takes a deep breath and slowly slides herself off of the ride. As slow as she goes, it’s not enough to fight gravity, and she flops bonelessly onto the dirt.

“I’m good!” She calls.

She’s not good.

Wally is kind enough to help her up, but she brushes him off once her feet aren’t at risk of buckling like a newborn deer. She’s a hardened soldier, a mere scratch can’t keep her down! So what if it’s twinging on her nerves? She doesn’t stop, marching down into the reserves and into the catacombs without stopping. Because if she stops, she’ll fall all over again. She enters the planning room to see her toad friend staring at some maps.

“Captain,” she gives Grime a salute. “Mission success. We got the supplies.”

The toad runs a warty hand over his map. “Good. I expect a report on what went down in the morning.”

Silence. “Not now?” Sasha asks. “You don’t wanna hear about how I totally saved that frog’s little life?” She accentuates with a punch, flexing her muscles. No response, instead the other is too focused on his job. Ugh. Marcy and Anne would’ve laughed.

She turns around, short hair hissing in the wind. It swipes against the burn spot, and she can’t help but let out a tiny moan of pain. Her hand moves to clamp the wound, but stops last second.

Grime looks up. “Everything ok, lieutenant?”

“Peachy.” she grumbles. “I’m gonna go even out this hair cut.” and then maybe sleep for a century. That sounds nice. So nice, her body thinks, that it decides it can’t even wait for her to be in her room before giving out. There’s a pull on her neck muscle, and whoop, down she goes. And hey, she’s laying down, maybe she can take that nap now.

“Sasha!” Grime yells, quick to abandon his map and hover over the teen. “What on earth happened? Were you poisoned? Did little bugs crawl into your spine and eat you from the inside out?”

She can’t help but let out a ridiculous snort. “Knew those existed.” she mumbles. And the world turns black.

When Sasha finally comes to, she’s laying on her side. Which is weird for her, because normally she sleeps on her stomach. The only time she ever sleeps like this is when one of her girls is nearby, during their sleepovers… she reaches out instinctively for them.

She instead touches a wart.

Her eyes shoot open, and there’s Grime, looking both incredibly uncomfortable and like a disappointed parent. It’s a look she’s seen a few times, and it never fails to make her insides squirm. She’s seen it on her real parents way too often, and to see it on Grime just… reminds her too much of them sometimes. But like the good soldier she is, she swallows her nerves and stares at him head on.

“You didn’t tell me you got hurt.” He starts with, right out of the gate.

“To be fair, I didn’t know how bad it was.” She responds. With a grunt, she tries to sit up, but that same spasmy feeling returns and overrides her neck with pain, forcing her to fall back down. “God, human anatomy sucks. Do you guys have a weak spot like this?” Well, they are cold blooded, if that counts for a weakness. Nothing in biology class prepared her for the intimate knowledge of amphibian anatomy that is needed in a frog war. To think, the last day before leaving Earth was about frog dissection. If only they hadn’t ditched.

“Sasha.” Grime’s voice cuts through her brain’s rambling. “You’re deflecting.”

“Oh boy, pulling the first name,” she grins weakly. “I’m in trouble, huh?”

“Wally told me what happened. You threw yourself in harm's way!” He crosses his arms, nails clenching on his skin. “And then you just walked off as if you hadn’t been hit! You know better lieutenant!”

Sasha huffs. “Like I said, I didn’t actually feel it at first. It’s not that bad! I’m fine!”

Grime raises a brow. “How long have you been asleep, then?”

“Uh, half an hour?”

“12 hours.”

Oops.

Ok, so maybe she was a little more hurt than she realized. Head injuries do bleed a lot, and maybe she just needed to catch up on sleep! No biggie, she’s fine!

“Have you even noticed the other injuries?” he asks, and she starts.

“What?” Her eyes jump down, and sure enough, there’s gauze wrapped around her hand, and a few patches on her leg, who knows what her torso looks like. “When did that happen!?”

“Have you not been paying attention? You jumped into a pile of enemies for the little frog man! What if he hadn’t been there? What if you hadn’t made it back? What if-” He cuts himself off with an angry grunt. And… oh.

He’s crying.

“Grimes…” she breathes, struggling to sit up on one arm. “I’m sorry for scaring you, really. I swear, I just didn’t notice. Adrenaline and all that.”

He huffs. “You need to take better care of yourself if you want to be in one piece for your friends, lieutenant. I don’t want to have to tell them you threw yourself on a spear.”

Right… Anne and Marcy… friends. Is she still their friend? Do they still trust her? Can she still trust them? It must show on her face, because Grime gently pushes her back down onto the bed. It’s probably the gentlest he’s ever been in his entire life.

“Is this about proving yourself to them?” He asks, and she stiffens. “It is, isn’t it? Deep down.”

Damn, when did he become a therapist? “Maybe…” she admits. “I dunno, I feel like… I swore I’d protect Wartwood while Anne was gone, I want to prove to her that… that I’m worthy of being her friend. All I cared about was myself for so long, that I just… I needed to care for others the way she did, yknow?”

“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to change, Sasha. But throwing yourself in harm’s way isn’t the way to go about it.”

“I know,” she sighs. “I know.”

He pats her fondly, the faintest of smiles on his face. “Atta soldier. We need you alive and sharp. You’re not disposable, lieutenant. The townspeople, for as… dense as they are,” she snickers at his reluctance. “Are smart enough to look up to you. And they need their leader.”

I started my biggest project so far - the Halloween 2023 video. I prepared all the essential things, picked the location, drew my story board, did my makeup, picked out the outfit, shot the shots for many hours as I had a really specific idea in mind and acted in the video. (It’s not yet finished, there will be a part 2).

This will probably be the most challenging thing I’ll do over the course of IB as it took MANY hours, required me to go out of my comfort zone and stressed me heaps. From the start, I got inspired by a tiktok and immediately started thinking of how I can execute my idea. I procrastinated with drawing the story board because it takes a lot of time and effort to actually clearly imagine what you want to convey and exactly how you want to do it. It took me probably 3 hours to create the storyboard for this video. I got frustrated many times and I was drained afterwards. I felt as if my brain were about to explode. Then on the day of shooting, I carved out 4 pumpkins and prepared my look. I was really happy about how my makeup and outfit turned out. Then, in the evening I started shooting. It was 9 degrees outside and I was wearing a dress that’s why my fingers absolutely froze. I was especially stressed because everything was supposed to be shot in slow motion but I couldn’t remember how to turn it on on my video camera. Eventually, I figured it out. But still, I wasn’t sure if that was a great choice as the scenery was very dim and slow motion uses high resolution which makes the image even darker. I lost hope of that video because some of the footage was just a black screen with some highlights. Additionally, my brother was my camera operator and I wasn’t able to explain to him how exactly I want every shot to be, but he still did a pretty great job. The filming process in itself was fun except the frozen limbs. When we finished shooting I felt enormous relief because one step of this project was done. I was exceptionally proud of myself because I kept my promise and actually brought myself to putting forward my idea into the world (because it usually stays at the inspiration stage). Also, this was an exception as I respected myself enough to actually take the challenge seriously. Normally, I would find an excuse not to do it. It shows how much respect I have for authority (teachers etc.) but not for my own will. (If it were for school, I would make myself go onto the project really easily).

(Please note: after three hours of writing out this response, I realize I may have misunderstood your question 😂 If you meant "what do you think a buddie sex scene would look like given tarlos", please let me know and it would be my genuine pleasure to describe that in great detail. What follows is not that.....)

I have been thinking about the potential of a buddie sex scene more than I ought to, I'm sure. You could say I've been a smidge preoccupied since realizing all the legit sex scenes in the show happened in season 1/early season 2. In seasons 3/4, the closest I think we've gotten to textual sex is Madney having sex to induce labour and that consisted of Maddie throwing her shirt at Chimney from off-screen.

Someone on that post (can't find it now of course) said that 911 Lone Star took over the original 911 later time slot and thus took over the ability to have sexier content.

As someone who hasn't watched a television show live in like 5 years, your ask has prompted me to do actual research to confirm this 🤓 According to pogdesign, 911 currently plays Mondays at 8pm and 911LS plays at 9pm which supports the theory.

That said, it kind of strikes me as weird that 8pm is considered too early for sexy content? But maybe I'm just out of touch with cable television??

So I did more research! So much research omfg this took 3 hours of my life. 😅

First we define the issue at hand

I'm defining a "sex scene" as a scene that involves two or more people mackin' on each other with any of the following:

the beginning of clothing removal onscreen

the movement towards a bedroom or bed

getting into someone's lap as a sign of escalation

post-coital pillow talk or cuddling

actual shots of naked skin and writhing (softcore porn essentially)

So 911 got moved to 8pm. Do any other 8pm shows have sex scenes?

CW - The 100 🔥 (I know there was a minimum of 2 wlw sex scenes, though they may have been post-coital)

CW - Riverdale 🔥🔥 is another teen show that I don't watch so I youtubed "Riverdale sex scenes" and I'm led to believe at least one couple is banging semi-onscreen well into season 4 (it has 4 seasons???)

NBC - Chicago Med 🔥, a procedural show not about teenagers and seems to have a least 1 couple with sexy scenes (the other Chicagos air at 9pm and 10pm) and I saw lap sitting for a hardcore makeout for the other couple!!!!! TIM TAKE NOTES!

NBC - Superstore 🔥, a half-hour comedy that played at 8pm on NBC, did have at least this one cut-away sex scene

So 2 teen shows, 1 procedural and 1 comedy all had something in the way of "sex scenes" while airing at 8pm.

But what if Fox the network is the sex-scene-killers??

Apparently Fox literally has only 5 scripted dramas of which the 911 is one and the others are:

The Resident 🔥🔥, a medical drama that plays at 8pm as of season 2 (9pm for season 1) and the main couple seem to have several sex scenes, but interestingly from what I can glean from YT, they may have stopped after s2 (though the couple stays together until at least s4 from what I can tell)

LA's Finest 🚫, a rebroadcast through Fox, it airs at 9pm and YT didn't show me any sexy scenes

Fantasy Island 🔥🔥 which plays at 9pm and looks to have sexier content based on the trailer

911: Lone Star 🔥🔥🔥 which plays at 9pm. Tarlos have had like 2 heavy makeouts/implied sex scenes plus a pretty hardcore-for-tv sex scene in the s2 finale

So it seems like even for Fox, the 8pm timeslot isn't necessarily what's vetoing the sex scenes in 911. But just to hammer that home, I did even more researching into the watershed hours, which is apparently the designated time broadcasters can show sexiness, but in the US that's 10pm to 6am so if the restrictions were such that they couldn't show any sex scenes before 10pm, Tarlos wouldn't have gotten that finale action (thank you, IRL bff who watched 911LS so I didn't have to!)

TL;DR - a summation of our findings

The 8pm timeslot is not the sex-scene-killer I once thought it was (see: all them filthy shows)

911 being a cop show is not a sex-scene-killer (see: dramas, procedurals and comedies all had sex scenes)

Fox is not anti-sex in their 8pm scripted dramas in general (see: The Resident)

Fox is not anti-sex homophobically (see: Tarlos, Hen/Eva)

However!! There seems to be a somewhat weird, somewhat isolated trend of Fox shows either cutting off or tapering off sex scenes (see: 911, The Resident) after 2 seasons or specifically after 2019.

So what are the theories (from least to most favourite)?

Theory #1 (Buddie loses 🚫): "Something" happened at Fox in 2019. The Resident is the only true analogue to 911 as it's also on Fox, also premiered in January 2018, also started at 9pm but was moved to 8pm (in season 2, not season 3 like 911). If my very brief googling can be trusted, The Resident saw a lot of sex scenes in season 2 (at 8pm) but after 2019 there isn't much to write home about. That lines up with what we've seen in 911. If something happened internally at Fox that changed broadcasting guidelines for 8pm, then canon Buddie will not get sex scenes unless the timeslot changes back.

Pros: It would be a hell of a coincidence wouldn't it?? Both shows airing around the same time, both stop showing sex scenes around the same time???

Cons: It's pretty weak, I can't find anything that supports "something" happening in 2019 that would affect an 8pm timeslot but not the 9pm one.

Theory #2 (Buddie loses 🚫): Sex as a short-term sales tactic. Fox uses sex in the first two seasons of shows to boost ratings and get people hooked because sex sells. But then, for whatever reason, they taper it off. If so, Buddie being canonized would not produce any sex scenes as we're far removed from season 2.

Pros: The Resident and 911 both stopped showing sex scenes after season 2 from what I can gather

Cons: If sex sells, why wouldn't it keep selling all the way to the bank?? There's no reason to stop something that's working.

Theory #3 (Buddie wins 🔥): Actors are the roadblock. Fox is fine with sex scenes at 8pm but the actors aren't comfortable! If so, Buddie sex scenes could be in the cards as both actors have had on-screen sex scenes previously.

Pros: Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and JLH are bigger names and they presumably get to not get naked on screen or simulate sex scenes if they don't want to. Aisha Hinds as a (criminally) smaller name wouldn't have had that kind of leverage in season 1, nor would Ryan Guzman in season 2? And Oliver Stark knew what he was signing up to to play a self-diagnosed "sex addict" so.

Cons: This is absolute, complete conjecture. I have zero idea what each of their comfort levels with sex scenes are or how that might relate to the writing/direction of their characters.

Theory #4 (Buddie wins 🔥): Stable canon relationships kill sex. Fox dramas use sex only pre-maritally to build relationships and the network or the showrunners/writers decide it's not as important once characters are in stable relationships/married. If so, we will get Buddie sex scenes as their canon relationship develops.

Pros: The Resident couple did get married post-season 2 I think? Athena stopped having onscreen sex after she married Bobby. Hen had sex but out of her marriage.

Cons: That's dumb, let married people bone. And we technically do have a Madney sex scene, tame as it was (but maybe they straddle of the line of stable but pre-marital???). Also if sex = building relationship, EddieAna have been excluded from that formula oops 😌

Theory #5 (Buddie wins 🔥): We're overthinking all of this. There hasn't been sex scenes past season 2 because the stories haven't called for it but when it does, such as the start of a new relationship, then we'll get some!

Pros: We haven't had any "new" relationships other than EddieAna since season 2 and their lack of intimacy is a glaring reminder they aren't well suited - they're not boning for plot reasons. While not strictly meeting the aforementioned definition of a "sex scene", we could use Albert coming out of Veronica's shower as a use of sex-as-relationship-building.

Cons: That's dumb, let married people bone, the sequel. Especially since HenRen is criminally neglected in terms of development and could use a fun playful sex scene.

So what have we learned?

Should Buddie go canon, 3 theories indicate we'd get some sex scenes for them, and only 2 say we wouldn't. The odds are in our favour. 🤡

I will do literally anything to procrastinate writing this damn fic that's been tormenting me for weeks. Please someone, anybody...send help...

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Eh. Well. Listen, I always want and mean to respond to comments, because as a commenter I always love a response from the author, but I am procrastinator supreme so a lot of the time I just... don't. Not for a great long while at least. Then, two years AFTER you left a comment, you might get an e-mail notification about me responding. It's horrible, really, because I keep the comments in my heart and treasure them so much and the lovely people taking the time to leave a few words on my silly stories really do deserve better.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Life, Still to Come has the one main character Jim Moriarty killing himself and his lover Sebastian Moran after he's diagnosed with incurable brain cancer, so I guess that's pretty angsty? The tone of the fic, however, is... kinda soft and peaceful, really. It doesn't feel so very sad, I think.

For Gallavich, I've got Chapter 7 of my ficlet collection Highs, and Your Lows (i will weather them). It's an Wild West AU kind of deal, where Ian Gallagher is visited by the ghost of the young fiend Mickey Milkovich after his dad beats him to death. That one is sad, but there's the glimmer of a promise that they might meet again one day, in a better world.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

My fics mostly end on a happy note, and I have a hard time pinning down which is the happiest. Hm. I'm gonna say Pressure or possibly Foreign Country, if only because the happy endings there are offered in contrast to the otherwise angsty story and so seems all the happier for it.

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I have, once. Well, started one, really. Notes Regarding the End of the World is a crossover between Sherlock BBC and Mark Lawrence's The Broken Empire trilogy. I still feel there's a bunch of potential there, but I'm very hesitant I'll ever finish it.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not to my recollection, no. Back when I posted my SW fic on the Jedi Council forums you might receive critical comments at times, but no hate.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Not really, no. I'm not very interested in reading it, and so see very little point in writing it. There's been a few semi-explicit depictions of sexual acts – most notably in Claim – and I'm not averse to writing kink fic, even if they don't typically include actual sex when I do. For instance, I did The Ways We Bend and Break and Mend for X-Men, and the whole point was Charles first whipping Erik and then cuddling him – except in the end it turned into a character study with lots of emotions, and I think any attempts to write smut would be like that for me. Accidental character drama. XD

I might have a Gallavich thing for kinktober that is likely to be pretty explicit and kinda messed up. We'll see.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don't think so. There have been a few instances of stuff popping up bearing a strong resemblance to things I've written, but there's also been times when I realize that things I have written bear a (very much unintentional) strong resemblance to other stuff that predates them, so I really think that's the nature of the beast. In any big fandom, the same ideas are likely to occur to multiple people, and we are all, often unconsciously, inspired by the same things and by each other.

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah, to Chinese and Russian.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! Pathoftheranger and I co-wrote (How to Break the) Alibi Armistice, which was fun!

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

I'm a creature of ever-changing affections, so I'm not so good with ”all-time favourite” and to be honest, I mostly tend to have favourite characters and ship them with everything in sight... Currently it's all about Gallavich but pretty much all ships including Jim Moriarty is forever gold to me (though MorMor is The Best. Or is it Sheriarty? Or maybe Mormorlock? Or Moriadlock? Or Johmlock – notice the 'm'?). Cherik's a big one too!

Ask me again in six months and my answer might well have changed!

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

The aforementioned Notes Regarding the End of the World. And I have this superlong Star Wars fic I started writing when I was 16 and wrote for years and years and then just... stopped writing, when I was maybe 20 pages from the end? It's currently at 180k words. This one I DO have some hope that I will go back and finish one day, although it's likely to be a jarring experience since I'm very much not 16 years old any more and my ideas about writing and the characters and everything have shifted quite a bit.

15. What are your writing strengths?

I do pretty well with the short format, I think. And with dialogue? Finding the voice of the characters (some more than others, certainly). Writing in my native Swedish, I think I'm pretty good at offering decent prose – I'd like to think I have a fairly developed ear for the flow of the text, and the melody of it? But when writing in English, that gets quite a bit harder. This really annoys me, because I'm rather preoccupied with the stylish elements of writing – though I've found that a lot of people seem happy enough to overlook clunky writing as long as they find the story otherwise engaging, which is a huge blessing for me. I believe I can build a decent plot, but since I can't write anyting longer than a few K these days there's no telling, is there?

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

Primarily getting any writing done at all. Mostly, I stare at a blank page and despair and then I give up. This is why I no longer write long fic. I also tend to reuse favorite phrases or themes far too often. And there are so many subclauses... Proofreading happens to other people (I'd like it to happen to me too, but I'm terrible with it). I'm not good at accepting constructive criticism, even when I ask for it. I will often favour style over efficiency, and I'll stubbornly refuse to admit that this can be a problem.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

This question makes me feel like I ought to have developed thoughts on this, but I don't so much... I don't mind it? I've used it. Uh. It's a good idea to do a bit of research and not just rely on Google translate for it? If you don't like it, don't use it. Those are my thoughts.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Star Wars. <3

19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

Buffy/Angel/Spike. The Book of All Hours. Heroes. Maybe something based on The Coldfire Trilogy... ? Oh, and the Bible. I'm sure there are others.

20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I really don't have one. There are a few I'm particularly happy with, but no one that truly stands out... That said, I was quite chuffed with how the first ficlet in Or Else Into the Light, my (tiny) collection of Anakin redemption one-shots, turned out. And Claim. I’m very pleased with Claim.

Best Of The Best: My Top 10 Videos Countdown

Y'all liked them once, and I like talking about my videos and the making of, so here's the 10 wrestling videos I've made that have gotten the most notes and my commentary on them

#10: The Corporate Ministry & Stone Cold Steve Austin Blood Mobile Segment 7/19/99 except I edited out all the non-Undertaker parts

I have yet to name a video more accurately to the contents. That video made me simp hardcore, but unfortunately, there were far too many parts that didn't include Taker. So I took the fuckers out. Literally went frame-by-frame through the whole video and snipped. Have been tempted to make a second installment, but why mess with a good thing?

#9: The Very Best

My only Marko Stunt video thus far. Which is a shame cause he's an absolute delight. This was requested by @the--blackdahlia who wanted a video set to the OG Pokemon theme. Not many wrestlers who could fit it perfectly, but Marko can. I think it's because he's a meme

#8: blah blah blah…

The tricky thing about MJF is he does a lot of chatting and not a lot of wrestling. Which means it's hard to set him to music cause chatting and music don't go together very much. But when he wrestles, his personality comes through in spades. Having a style that shows you're a heel while still being fully legal is so tricky, but MJF does it and I wanted to showcase that in this request/suggestion/pointing out the song fits him by @theparaphoenix

#7: 30 Years of The Undertaker (condensed into a very speedy 5 minutes)

Taker takes forever to enter the ring. This is a known hilarity. I joked about that as part of a previous video, and decided to expand the gag into a full career-encompassing video featuring 1 entrance from 1990-2020 sped up to 4x and set to the Benny Hill theme. Do kids these days still know Benny Hill? Hell, even I don't really know Benny Hill. I just know that any sped up footage set to this theme is hilarious and 5 minutes' worth let me see every year (2003 gave me a lot of grief)

#6: ❤️YOU START A FIRE❤️

My first Hartbreak content. It had to be made when I found one of Bret's songs. As in, a song he sang. It's not a fantastic song by any means, but when paired with the bitch-facedness of the Screwjob, it's just *chef's kiss*

#5: Undertaker V Kane @ Wrestlemania 14: The Better Version

I must've been procrastinating when I made this. I know I was. I spent 2 hours just dicking around with a crack vid made from my favourite and most-viewed match of all time. Just wanted to add as much silly goofiness to it as I could. The opening bit inspired the '30 Years Of Taker' video and as a fun fact, the entrance was sped up to 4x, but the audio was an overdub that was only 2x, because otherwise the gong sounded like stubbing one's toe on a trash can

#4: The Story Of Kane (As Told By Kane)

This was an experiment of a crack vid with structure. Crack vid timing and style, but within the frame of Kane going to his anger management group. The hardest part of this one was fitting all the clips into a 5-minute frame (crucial, cause my software only lets me make 5 minute videos for free. Longer, and I have to pay)

#3: RKBrOut Of Touch Thursday

My very first true 'video'. I consider everything before it to be tiktoks or experimental videos to learn the software on. This one was designed to be a video in the style of these other videos and I have rewatched it so much. That being said, I am STUNNED that it is #3. I think I've only reblogged it myself once or twice, but even if I hadn't, it would have still ended up in the top 5. Guess it just hit the right funny bones

#2: Wrestling Out Of Context

I don't often blend companies, but this was an exception. The Jericho/MJF bit inspired this video, but it also gave me a place to use "The Cream", which is a mini-edit I'd made previously. I still have ~4 mini-edits from the spree that produced "The Cream", which have yet to be posted and unless I make a second installment, y'all probably won't see the other mini-edits.

#1: Danhausen In Exactly As Much Context As He Requires

Y'all just ADORED this one, huh? It has literally 6 times as many notes as the 2nd place video. My intention was to introduce tumblrs who didn't know Danhausen to him and also the Assboys running joke, and it worked like a charm. He's got at least one very nice, very evil new fan and if I hadn't been on a 2-hour time crunch to make this one, it would have included plenty of other videos from his channel in it.

Got tagged by @calamity-unlocked for the procrastinating writer ask, and might as well! Always fun to get away from the pains of editing, RIP to Falling Down Dry’s eighth chapter.

1) How many works do you have on AO3?

26.

2) What’s your total AO3 word count?

220,000.

3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

A lot. Just...a lot before I got into Ao3 so let’s keep it at that. But mainly I wrote for SU, Amphibia, and FMA.

4) What are your top five fics by kudos?

-Death of the Ego

I would say this happened because I wrote this at the right place at the right time. People had been theorizing that Steven would get corrupted ever since the trailer to SUF, and I originally made this as a one-shot...until people encouraged me to start exploring it.

Wouldn’t say it was my best work, but every time I wrote something it meant I improved slowly, and I would always appreciate that no matter the weather.

-Doesn’t Have to be Solo

Oh man, I loved this one! Just a series of connected events with Steven going on his road trip, and learning more about himself and who he was along the way. It also was the fic where I needed a lot of beta readers as time went on, so it made me learn a lot about grammar, prose, and overall the internal rules I developed while writing in general.

-Beyond the Music Box

This was the surprising one! This fic was originally a place where I could archive all the drabbles I written on Tumblr, and y’all really wanted it due to how chaotic my tag format is for this stuff.

It’s surprising for me because I didn’t expect a lot of love when it came to my casual writings since they take I don’t know an hour or so in creating, so thank you everyone who encouraged me to do this.

Just ignore the fact I’ve been lazy at updating the drabbles, shhhh.

-Building One Up

Marcanne, my beloved. Me and my friend kept talking about how Anne was a buff dork and this was at a time where no one really focused on that except mainly on Sasha when it came to strength (for obvious reasons).

I found this slander (I’m joking, by the way) and decided that I needed to write my feelings out on the topic.

And y’all agreed with me so dthdfthtfhtfht.

This also was the first time I had to hone in on a new form of characterization entirely, being that I infused the character’s thoughts and feelings into the way the prose flowed out itself. For Marcy, I went on a pretty analytical front with this piece, and it helped me get into the groove for people like Anne and Sasha and many others over the course of writing.

-Late Night Talks

I didn’t expect this one to blow up at all. I wrote this at one a.m. and y’all just grabbed this fic and ran, I am still confused.

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I respond to comments all the time because comments just give a lot of serotonin, you know? Someone took their time out of their day to remark on things I did in the work itself, and it’s just very validating to see. It also creates this environment that says, “Yes, I see you, and you can interact with me anytime you want.” so it’s all about that friendliness unless you’re rude to me back.

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Pizza for One. Had an angst kick when SUF occurred so I milked it whenever my motivation got the best of me.

7) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I don’t write crossovers unless you mean a crossover of characters to a new environment and set of rules. I would gladly write characters into the FMA world, oh my Lord!

But I guess the craziest stuff I’d written would just be comedy sketches? Best example would be Joe and Bessie having kids and Marcy having a conniption over it, so take that what you will.

8) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

9) Do you write smut? If so what kind?

I do write smut. I write it privately but I adore characterization and intimacy, and so I try to make rather domestic pieces that connect to the characters themselves. If it has a certain kink, I make sure to research it so I could understand why the character finds the act rather arousing, and I just want to pay respects to the act itself.

Even with our current day and age, there’s still a lot of conservative anti-sex rhetoric going around, and I always try to view the act of physical intimacy in the same lens as one who adores love in all its different facets and forms.

Nope.

12) Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Sadly, no. I do art trades with people and those are lovely to do since we get to brainstorm and make art together, but I’ve never co-written work with someone. If anyone wants to do that, then sure, just hit me up.

13) What’s your all time favourite ship?

It changes every season, every morning tide, every peace loving hour on the Planet Earth.

It’s Marcanne, right now.

When it comes to ships I always go with the Friends-to-Lovers dynamic, but a lot of the ships I have come from seeing the amount of intrigue in how that type of ship would play out. That could be with Kannao and the amount of commentary over Japanese gender biases, or Royai with their very complicated but extensive adoration and loyalty to one another.

For Marcanne, it’s all about that playful banter that could definitely bubble out of the surface if you just (bangs table) allow them to communicate and be transparent fully. (cries)

14) What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Sadly, that Anne fic with her confiding in Hop Pop after they get settled in her house. After what happened with the sneak peek, I realized that this fic would need a lot of build-up to be satisfying and I didn’t have the strength to do a 10k build-up to Anne crying.

Maybe I’ll finish it, we’ll see.

15) What are your writing strengths?

Writing strengths would be concise prose and characterization. I am a worry wart, I worry over the importance of each paragraph and how it all forms and transitions together, it’s just a part of how I work a great deal of the time. And man, characterization is the big one for me, if I don’t understand how the people work and could theoretically function in the story itself, I feel absolutely lost.

Which is also the reason why I’m struggling right now with FDD Chapter Eight, because Marcy’s reaction to Yunan keeps eluding my grasp!

16) What are your writing weaknesses?

I overthink a lot. Concise prose is great but I force myself to get all fancy and massive with details since I’ve got to unless I want a specific part to be so quick and unmeaningful, and this leads to pacing issues or just not enough intended time for people to breathe in the fic itself.

17) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I need to get a beta to make sure I don’t sound like an asshole, haha. I do love other languages, they are beautiful and can add a lot towards an audience who does know the language itself, but it depends on the work I’m doing.

18) What was the first fandom you wrote for?

That would be uhhhhh, my memory is lacking but Minecraft. The whole videogame had a wish fulfillment atmosphere to it, and since I got rather obsessed by how anything could happen in the engine itself I went with it.

19) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

When it comes to me, my own perception of my art changes day to day. Back when I first posted the Lapidot fic I thought it was the best thing I’ve ever done even though now, with the knowledge I have from workshops and betas, that the style I drafted had a lot of grammar and prose mistakes that I wouldn’t make in the future. It is pretty subjective, but for now I think the best fic I could look at right now would be amestrian catcher (set something ablaze).

Top Games Played 2021

Hello, hello, hello. It is that time of the year again folks. (Yes, I know I’m late this year) Let’s get into it!

10 - Monster Hunter World

Now I’m giving Monster Hunter World the first mention at Number 10. I’m not saying it’s a bad game, because I have heard a lot of good things about it - I just think I’m at the beginning of the game where you need to keep going for it to get good. I spent about 2 hours just customising my character and pet, the level of detail to customation is awesome! The fighting mechanics are a big clunky but hopefully if I go back to it I will enjoy it more.

9 - Hidden Through Time

Yes, I am well aware I have a gif from Runescape, but this is such a small indie game - you try and find a gif for it! It’s basically a Where’s Wally game, but with no Wally and more items to find. My bestie and her dad also love it. Fun for all the fam, honestly give it a try.

8- Blair Witch

So the first horror on the list, I know y’all were waiting. Blair Witch, has a lots of similarities and references to the film but is a whole other experience. Best part is you have a dog that you can customise, pet and give treats to. The graphics are hella amazing too! However, I did stop playing this game as I loved that dog like it was child and (SPOILER ALERT) I’m pretty sure it died, and I refuse to accept it.

7 - Harvey’s New Eyes

Right listen, the gif ain’t from the game but it does give off the vibe from the game (another indie game if you were wondering.) So definitley would recommend this game if you have a pretty dark sense of humour, please don’t play in front of your parents, you will be in therapy the next day. It actually made me laugh so loud and the pun game is unbeatable.

6- Genshin Impact

I haven’t played this game as much as last year sadly, but you know I’m here for the free stuff you get logging on. I got more Childe content this year so I’m more than happy, that sexy bastard. I like how they’ve expanded the map, though I’m not high enough level to get there yet, so sad. The Summer quests were so cute though.

5 - Don’t Knock Twice

Another horror for the list, I know you were waiting. Don’t Knock Twice is a fantastic short horror game! It absolutely shit me up the first time, I literally had to pause the game and wait for my friend to join for support. The tears in my eyes were real lemme tell you. Also graphics 10/10, honestly the atmophere created just went so well with the jump scares, the waiting for something to happen was terrifying.

4 - Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Aaaaaah Lara, my queen, my wife, the woman who made me realise I’m a little gay. I’ve always preferred the classic Lara to the new games, HOWEVER, I absolutely love the Shadow of the Tomb Raider! Nothing felt forced or like a filler, the plot is so much better and the characters more interesting. Easily the best out of the newer triology!

3- Fallout 4

This was a surprising game that made a comeback to me this year, now I’m playing it every available moment. I played them a long time back, F4 is easily better than Fallout 3. My bestie enjoyed watching me play it so mcuh that she’s starting to replay it too. That lady that sings in that underground bar has my heart. I will romance everyone, except McCready he can die in a hole.

2- Fortnite

Fortnite easy had to be 2nd place, was very close to coming in first! My bestie and I played this game so much this past year. We have gotten top places in almost every battle babe, so if anyone wants an earlier death I got you boo.

1 - Final Fantasy 7 Remake

I WAS ABSOLUTELY STUNNED WHEN THIS WAS OFFERED AS A FREE GAME ON PS+!!!! I downloaded it straight away! Although I procrastinated for ages before I actually played it because I was so worried it wouldn’t be as good as the original. Oh how wrong I was... It is EVEN BETTER! The graphics, utterly beautiful. The characters are more easy to become invested in. Our sexy daddy villain Seph. There was a point a character started humming the original FF7 music and I almost started crying. I also much more prefer this combat system to the original. It’s so fucking good

commission 4: slow burn/best friends/college au w/ jin

note 2: I tried to make ramen-making as unboring as possible but it really is just....water and spice. If you’re confused about eating ramen at convenience stores please search that up on Youtube, I’ve exhausted my link resource skills (except for when I want you to listen to songs.) Also, the songs I mention are titanic/the end by cehryl and Subside by Eloise. I actually listened to Sweet Night on repeat while writing this so if u wanna listen to that... ;_;

note 3: everything about this story is in medias res. I realized I had no proper beginning or conclusion and I didn’t wanna change the flow of the story by concretely adding one or the other... so if the story feels incomplete/fragmented then please understand that this was a conscious and intentional decision done on my part :,) It’s slow burn!!!! I Love you ha ha!!

The library is open twenty four hours. The convenience store in the student centre is not.

“Please use your car,” you assert.

Seokjin huffs. “Then pay for my gas.”

It’s an empty threat. He’s got no business driving hard bargains when he has capital in the form of a rich CEO dad. He ignores your glaring, calmly closing his laptop, shoving it into his bag. Closing up shop after a derivative crisis you’d called him up for because he lives on campus, plus he never sleeps early. You appreciate that he gives into you so easily.

“Fine.”

So you go, searching for a convenience store that has those instant noodles you suddenly came up with a craving for this late at night. Seokjin’s used to it by now. You get things done when you want to, even if it means making a home of the pillowy chairs in the library you’d claimed for studying purposes.

The mathematical theory of chaos. You don’t want to think about it, and you click your seatbelt with a yell, throw your bag in the backseat with as much strength your anger allows for. “I hate school!”

“Please don’t scream in the car.”

“I hate it!”

Seokjin slots the key in. “Can you look up where the convenience store is?”

He tosses you his phone to unlock. You jab at the screen with more grumbling and colourful cursing, pulling up whatever Google Maps says is the nearest store open.

“Plug in the AUX cord,” Seokjin urges next. He merges into traffic, which is really only one car and the late night bus. A quiet night for your suffering.

“Can I play my—“

“Nope.” You sneer. Tapping open his playlists, you pass under orange lamp post after orange lamp post and scroll in silence before Seokjin groans. “I made a new playlist, pick that one.”

“What’s it called?”

You can see that he’s stiffened up. You don’t comment. “The one with the three heart emojis.”

Simple enough. You don’t care to sift through the songs, and the first one plays with one more indulgent tap of the screen.

Why don’t you tell her? I think you should. You know how you’re feeling, you can’t fight the truth…

Google interrupts the soft voice with the indication of the next right. Seokjin eases on the gas pedal. You watch him nod his head to the softness of the stereo. “I can’t pay for your gas.”

“I know you can’t.”

“I can pay for your ramen,” you suggest. Seokjin makes a quiet noise, like he’s amused by your generosity, or maybe he just thinks you’re dumb. You think it’s the latter.

“I don’t want you to pay for my ramen.”

“Then what do you want?”

The lamp post light striking Seokjin’s face gives way to the harsh red of the stoplight. In the stillness, he sends you a hard look. It makes you feel weirdly vulnerable, like he’s stripped you bare.

To make things worse, Seokjin says:

“Nothing you don’t want to give me.”

He doesn’t heed your confusion because he presses on the gas, looks straight ahead. You do too, and you try not to contemplate the cool brevity of his attention you suddenly want back. You push your uncertainty aside.

(He has a handsome face, you think.)

Seokjin interrupts, “So why’d you wait till now to study?”

“You know me.” Procrastination. The complete and utter mistake of underestimating the allotted time needed to get a successful grasp of concepts for your midterm. In not so convoluted terms, this class sucks ass.

“Yeah but that was—a lot of notes.”

It was. You probably pushed five weeks of material in the span of three hours. You can feel the very tips of your nervous system frying up as you pass through gas station-lit intersections. But there’s a real answer to his question, and you have the intense need to curl in on yourself in this leather seat.

“Well I would have started yesterday, but I was busy,” you counter.

“With what?”

“So you know Hyukjae from Psych?”

Seokjin pauses to listen to Google’s instructions, and immediately makes a left onto another main intersection. “Sure.”

“We went out yesterday,” you admit.

He hums a tight sound, tapping on the wheel. “Hm. How’d it go?”

It wasn’t bad. You shared butter tarts and laughed at his anecdotes and Hyukjae-from-Psych paid for your Uber home. He gave you a very weak hug before you slipped into the car. It was in that seat you’d decided you wouldn’t be sending him an I had fun! text that night.

“It was okay. Like, nice to me and stuff. But nothing…”

“…Worth revisiting.”

“Sure,” you mimic, and you wonder why he’s right.

“The guy’s okay,” he says. Almost like it’s with relief. “It’s—not to sound rude, but. Uh. I think it’s, uh—good. That you weren’t… interested.”

You think he’s gripping the steering wheel a little too tight. “Why?”

“Can’t trust guys with bad handshakes.” Seokjin chances a glance at you, and laughs at the confused scrunch of your eyebrows. “I met him during that networking conference in third year. Limp-wristed me. Like a chump.”

“Ew.” You can’t say he’s wrong. That hug Hyukjae gave you really was weak. The dude has noodles for arms. “But yeah, I guess you’re right. Wasn’t really my type.”

“Hm,” is all Seokjin comes up with. You watch him pass right through the turn Google tells him to take. “Oh shit. Sorry. I’m just. Thinking. About… limp… men.”

You snort. “What?”

“Like a man. A limp man. Hyukjae. Not me,” he clarifies fast—proudly— “just. Anyway! Back to you saying what your type was.”

“I wasn’t,” you accuse.

“Yeah well now I’m asking because I don’t wanna think about limp men. Your type, please.”

He sounds weirdly inquisitive. Demanding, almost. You chalk it up to the near-delirium of being awake past 1AM.

“I—don’t know,” you start. Somehow you feel like you’re messing something up. “He was kind, I like… kind. And soft. Sweet. You know Kim Taehyung? From Neuro? Like, almost big shoulders but not really. I like big shoulders. Yeah. Guys like Kim Taehyung-ish.”

Seokjin just hums again. There’s another song playing, and you don’t know how many you’ve rotated through in this playlist. You didn’t think it’d take this long to get to the store.

Google says it’s just two minutes away now. Seokjin says, “Cool,” and then sings along to the stereo.

You got me losing sleep over you… I usually sit still but now I can’t help but move… When I see you, I don’t know what to do…

“Spicy or not spicy?”

“Whatever keeps my stomach lining intact,” Seokjin says.

You don’t say anything more and grab two of whatever ramen packaging isn’t scarily red. The convenience store is void of any customers, and the cashier rings you up with a very sour face for interrupting the show he’s got playing on his phone. His face shrivels up even more because all you can pay with is coins. Seokjin laughs behind you when you apologize for clattering the dimes too harshly on the counter.

“Enjoy,” the cashier announces, and he doesn’t mean it one bit.

The hot water machine at the back is a very intimidating thing next to the tiny display of cookies. Too many buttons and knobs you don’t understand, so Seokjin takes on the chivalric role and prepares everything for you. He rips the plastic open with gentle hands. Dumps the powder with too much conviction.

You both watch the water stream hot into the noodles. “Do you like macadamia nuts in your cookies?”

“I guess,” you say.

“Wanna split a cookie?” He hands you chopsticks to stir the ramen with, gestures at the cookie display with a jut of his chin.

“Are you paying?”

“Can you imagine if I made you pay after I asked to split,” Seokjin spits at you. “Yes I’m paying.”

“Then I want chocolate chip.”

He freezes, then jabs smartly at his noodles for a tense ten seconds.

“You make me mad,” he finally answers. “Should we eat in the car?”

“The bowl is too hot to hold.”

The counter at the window it is. You’re sad that you didn’t buy pickled radish, but your coin purse has weeped all its coinage out. Seokjin leaves you as Noodle Guard, going off to pay for that bonus cookie with a crumpled five. In the next second you contemplate the evaporation of ramen soup, the cookie is duly dumped right next to you, and Seokjin takes a huge bite of what still appears to be extremely hot noodles.

He promptly chokes, and makes sputtering noises.

“Holy shit,” Seokjin cries.

You take a much, much slower bite. “You’ll be fine.”

“I thought I could be cool for you,” he cries some more.

“You don’t need to be cool for me. Who eats ramen in a cool way?”

Seokjin nods his approval, that tear of theatrics sliding down his cheekbone. He eats carefully. A noisy car roils on outside, and passes quickly outside your periphery.

“Thank you for bringing me here,” you remember to say.

“I love standing at counters and eating things hot,” Seokjin retorts. He dodges the fist you aim at his abdomen with swift ease. “It’s no problem.”

“I—“ You don’t really know why but you need to talk. “You know—you’re really, um, kind.”

Foolery. Absolute foolery that sentence was, and the cashier probably heard that foolery, and Seokjin definitely heard that absolute foolery, and he’s laughing. Like really laughing, caught with the noodles dangling from in-between his teeth. That’s all you had to say? The guy drove you out to get cup noodles out of his own volition. That’s kindness maxed out, and he deserves better than you fumbling between your teeth. Your nerves have fried up so bad, you guess.

Seokjin’s giggles dwindle down. “Thanks,” he says, smiling small.

You blame the heat of your cheeks from the heat of your soup.

Neither of you are desperate to get to that last quarter of noodles to broth ratio. The knots of your shoulders loosen with the sound of your slurping combined, and silently you are reminded of Seokjin’s warmth, standing so close to you.

The easiest path to a nice ending involves a happy belly and Seokjin driving you home with nothing more than a goodbye and a thank-you as you slam the car door shut. This is not unknown to you, because you and Hyukjae-from-Psych took that easy path yesterday.

You just don’t do this often, contemplating all the routes of romance. When is it appropriate to laugh at a joke, to wipe your mouth on the napkin? To smile and peel at your heart and grant that person access to all your inner workings? You belatedly notice that Seokjin did not bring napkins.

(The moment in the car—nothing you don’t want to give me—you want to laugh at his jokes, and smile, peel and peel and peel at your heart, but slowly. Slowly, you put your chopsticks down.)

How funny it is to come to very sound conclusions within a split second, because all you know is that it feels good, being with him like this.

Seokjin, in your quiet realization, takes it upon himself to decide the cookie-eating rights.

“Want the first bite?” He asks, propping the chopsticks horizontally on his bowl.

You nod. Desperately you try not to look at him because you might make more realizations, and you don’t think you’re ready for any more unleashed and unknown emotions. “Please.”

He gives it to you. The right side decidedly has more chocolate chips, and it’s a very nice explosion on your tongue. So nice you groan into it. “Oh that’s really good.”

He snatches the cookie away before you can take another bite. “I get bigger bites because I paid for it.”

“That—? Uh, that’s not how sharing works.”

“Yes it does,” Seokjin argues. But he just takes as normal a bite as ever. You can’t say you don’t focus on his mouth for too long, though—

—And you immediately seize up at the thought. Horrified, you shriek: “Actually just—have the rest of it!”

He looks alarmed. “O…kay?”

“You’ve got a nice mouth,” you blurt out next.

An absolutely awful feeling settles heavy in your stomach. Because almost immediately you realize that this is a kind and soft boy with nice anecdotes that have yet to be uncovered this night (he likes telling you stories) and he’s got wider shoulders than Kim Taehyung and you’re not sharing butter tarts but you’re sharing a cookie with him.

Another realization: does Seokjin have limp arms?

He puts the cookie down. (His arm looks very strong, doing that.) “I—thanks?”

“I think I’m losing my mind,” you note.

He watches you slump over the counter. Purposefully burying your face in your elbows to muffle your betraying mouth. “It’s late,” is all he says.

“Did that make you uncomfortable?”

“Not at all.” You don’t think you’re breathing. Your lungs have evaporated, like those steamy ramen noodles you just ate. Seokjin probably notices you’ve stopped moving, so he says, “Really.”

“Okay.”

“Did it—did it make you uncomfortable?”

“Not at all,” you say.

“Cool. Do you wanna go—“

You stand up straight, grab all your garbage before he finishes. You don’t look at him. “Yep, yep, please.”

(iii)

He puts the key in the ignition, and doesn’t budge.

“Somehow I feel like you wanna say something else,” Seokjin says.

You curl your hands into fists. “It’s late.”

“I’m aware.”

“I’m—I’m sorry.” You are acutely aware of how garbled you must sound. It’s starting to get on your nerves, how flimsy you’re being. “I’m not… thinking.”

“For what it’s worth, I think you’re being pretty articulate for someone with an empty brain.”

“Are you making fun of me?”

“Don’t put words in my mouth,” Seokjin sighs.

The seat squeaks where you tense up. “I don’t want to think about your mouth.”

“Do you wanna know what I think?” You nod. Jesus. You’ll just let him do the talking from now on because your tongue can’t be trusted this early in delirium, late in the hour. “I—I…”

Seokjin struggles some more, then deflates. He starts laughing.

“I… don’t drive just anyone out to convenience stores at two in the morning for ramen. You have to know that.” He clears his throat. His eyes are shiny with the harsh glare of neon signs. “I guess I just—wanna know… what you’re thinking.”

“I’m thinking…” Your lips part. Searching for words feels like a physical thing—your stomach is swimming with what feels like a billion thoughts but nothing comes up for air. “I’m thinking I—don’t want to say the wrong thing.”

Seokjin turns to look at you. “I won’t make fun,” he whispers.

“I think. I think, you look—um—really… Good. Um. R-Really… good, right now.”

“Thanks.” He looks up like he wants to say something but his eyes harden where he gazes, locking in on the dust motes of the windshield. Your lungs swell small in the quietude. “I think you really look good, too.”

If baser compliments already have you burning then you don’t know what you’d do if he tried anything more romantically complex. Some people are meant for loud love stories and grand gestures and you—all you can do is think too much and you want to say more but Seokjin understands. He understands your silence, your ineptitude.

In a fit of controlled passion, you reach over the console, grasping at his knuckles till he flips his palm right into yours.

“Feels… ”

You wait for something to come to mind. A phrase, a proper thought to give utterance to, all the failures and successes of the night. Faithfully, nothing comes.

It just feels.

And Seokjin seems to agree. He holds tight between the grooves of your fingers.

“You’re very pretty and it hurts,” he says, and he doesn’t try to meet your gaze, and one feeling comes resolute: it feels right.
