Chapter 18
“I’m sorry about Christmas,” she said suddenly. Her hand dropped away, joining its counterpart on his chest.
“What?” He hadn’t even been here for Christmas. “What are you talking about?”
Elle frowned, her eyes screwing shut. “Wait— no. The party. Nathan and Sylvie’s party.”
Oh. That. “The mistletoe thing? That was Haley’s—”
“No, when I—” she shook her head. “I turned my head.”
John just stared at her. She had turned her head. For a fleeting, wonderful moment, he’d thought they actually had a chance. Until she’d jerked away from him.
“I crossed a line,” Elle continued, completely unaware of where John’s thoughts were headed. “And then again at New Year’s.”
“At New Year’s?” John had kissed her on New Year’s. And almost gone a lot further, if she hadn’t pushed him away. Again.
Elle just nodded, though, and sniffled. A tear escaped the corner of her eye, rolling slowly down her cheek. “I know you don’t— I mean, you’re not into me like that. I’m sorry I took things too far.”
“You—” What the hell was she saying?
“I know you see me as, like, a— a kid sister,” she continued, voice shaking. Another tear slid down her cheek, and John reached up to brush it away.
It was a mistake on his part, apparently. Elle stepped out of his reach the moment she was free, her hands flying up to her face, trying to stop her tears as they began to free-fall.
“I’m— I’m so sorry,” she choked out, fully crying at this point. “I—” She sucked in a sharp breath, backing up as John scrambled to his feet.
“Elle—” but she was gone, turning on her heel and fleeing up the stairs.
Shit. Shit. She loved him. She thought he didn’t love her. And his distance was only adding to her misconception.
John dropped heavily back onto the couch, cradling his head in his hands. How in the world was he going to fix this?
