Field of Poppies Part 22

Summary: After being apart for six years, childhood friends Tommy and Amelia reunite under odd circumstances. Tommy is an outspoken young man and Amelia is pregnant and out on the streets. The bond of family can be unbreakable but it is tested often. Especially when Europe descends into war.

Part 22: Another Christmas without Tommy. Yet bright days are just around the corner.

“Did you know Alexander? He used to work down at the butcher’s shop before he was drafted.”

Amelia was in the betting shop working alongside Rosie, Danny Owen’s wife. “I think so. Was he the one married to that Italian girl?”

“Right, she passed some time ago from the flu.” Rosie nodded. “Well, he came back few months ago.” She reported. “They just locked him up in the asylum last week. Martha was telling me.”

“The asylum?” Amelia looked up from her ledger in alarm. “Whatever for?” From the brief time she’d known the young man, he seemed like a decent person without anything seemingly off about him.

“He went off his rocker. Had a gun and was threatening to shoot his own brother.” Rosie looked concerned. “They said he still thought he was in the war. They couldn’t convince him otherwise.”

“Jesus.” Then pen slipped from Amelia’s hand a bit. She couldn’t imagine what sort of horrors could change such a nice man. What could possibly cause someone to lose their mind completely? And would Tommy come back the same?

After almost four years of waiting for him, she couldn’t imagine having to lock him up to protect others and himself. Because Alexander’s case wasn’t some anomaly. There were many stories drifting quietly around Birmingham of the men who came back. Once upstanding figures in the community came home different men. There were two men that Amelia knew had committed suicide. Their families were distraught. They had waited so long for them to return, were so happy they came home alive, and now they had to bury them.

It made Amelia so anxious. Of course, she wanted Tommy home but what could she do if he was nothing like the man that had left her that day at the train station? How could she explain that to her children?

“It’s a shame,” Rosie said quietly. Both the wives were thinking about their husbands. Hoping, that maybe by some sheer luck, their boys would be okay. But it seemed foolish to even hope.

It would be another Christmas without Tommy. It never got any easier, although Amelia tried to make do. Annie’s awareness of Tommy’s missing presence was becoming more of an issue. There were only so many times Amelia could explain why he was gone. The almost-four-year-old was unsatisfied with the answers. She didn’t understand war, didn’t understand why her father was gone, and especially struggled with why he couldn’t just come home.

A week before Christmas, the Shelby household was in chaos. A loose thread on Annie’s teddy bear had caught on one of the kitchen cabinet handles. Instead of trying to unravel it from the metal, the young girl pulled and pulled until her darling stuffed animal had a loose arm hanging by a thread.

Annie screamed and cried, inconsolable as she cradled her bear close.

Amelia tried to calm her down, saying it wouldn’t be an issue to stitch the thing up again. But her daughter wasn’t listening. She wouldn’t even let go of the bear so Amelia could fix it.

“Love, please, it’ll be okay!” Amelia begged for her daughter to calm down. “Mummy will fix it and he’ll be as good as new. I promise.”

“But daddy gave him to me!” She sobbed.

“I know, but I can fix him.”

“Daddy’ll know I hurt ‘im!” She wailed and thrashed about on the kitchen floor. “Daddy’ll hate me!”

“Annie Shelby, what on Earth gave you that idea?” Amelia asked.

“’Cause…’cause he will!” She didn’t seem to have any basis for how she felt. “That’s why he won’t come home!”

“Now you listen to me.” Amelia gathered her up into her lap. “Your father loves you very much and if he could come home, he would in a heartbeat.”

Annie began to calm down in her mother’s arms. She hiccuped and wiped her eyes and nose on her sleeve. “Teddy’ll be okay?” She asked.

“Of course, I’ll patch up his arm and he’ll be looking nice for Christmas.” Amelia kissed her cheek. "Now go head upstairs. It's nearly bath time."

As they always did, they got through the holidays and made it out alive in the new year. Amelia was struggling to write down the date sometimes.

1918

How could it only be two years away from the new decade? And more importantly, would she be welcoming 1920 still without Tommy. Max would be ten by the end of 1920. By then he would’ve spent more than half his life without his father. It made Amelia sick to her stomach to think about.

She just didn’t realize good news was around the corner.

Annie and Max were running around the parlor while Amelia cleaned up after dinner. The two were sick of being cooped up inside because March had brought on endless rain.

The phone started to ring and Amelia called out from the kitchen. “Quiet down, you two, mum needs to answer the phone!”

It didn’t do much good. The kids were leaping off the sofa and creating a big ruckus.

Still, Amelia picked up the receiver. “Shelby Residence.”

“Mel?”

For a moment, Amelia was convinced she was in a dream. There was no other explanation for why Tommy’s voice would be on the other end of the phone. Her knees went weak and she clutched onto the stair banister nearby. “Tommy?” She gasped. “Is that really you?”

“Yeah, love. It’s me.”

It felt like her heart was in her throat. There was so much she wanted to say to him and yet she couldn’t find the words. “I-I don’t understand.”

“They’re sending us home. All of the 179."

Tears began to stream down Amelia’s cheeks. This was the day she’d been waiting years for. Now that it was time, she couldn’t contain her happiness. “Really? Oh, Tommy…I-I don’t know what to say. I’m over the moon!”

“I know, love. I can’t wait to finally be back home with you. I don’t have much time on the phone, are the kids there?”

“Yes, yes I’ll get them.” Amelia turned from the telephone. “Max, Annie! Guess who’s on the telephone!”

The two rambunctious kids ran into the hallway to see what she was talking about. “Who?”

“It’s daddy.” Amelia knelt down and held the receiver to them.

“Dad?” Max was cautious, unsure if his mother was just pulling his leg or not. Although he figured it would be too cruel of a trick for his mother to play on him.

“Hello, Max. Your sister there too?”

“Daddy?” Annie piped up. She looked thrilled but nervous at the idea of speaking to the man she’d never met.

“I’m coming home soon, you two,” Tommy announced happily. “Are you excited? I’m going to be coming home on the train next month.”

“Really?” Max’s eyes widened in shock. “For good?”

“For good,” Tommy promised. “You’ll be at the train station waiting for me, right?”

“Yeah!” Max couldn’t hold back his grin.

“Alright, well, I’ll be home very soon. I love you all very much.”

“We love you, Tom,” Amelia said tearfully before the line went dead. She hung up the receiver, her hand trembling.

“Aren’t you happy, mummy?” Annie asked.

“Of course.”

“Then why’re you crying?”

“I’m just so happy.” Amelia pulled her children in for a tight squeeze. “He’s finally coming home.”

Love Square Fluff Week Day 6 - AU

I decided to do a Princess/Bodyguard AU.

Marinette’s dress finally came to rest around her ankles once more, having been twirled around the dancefloor all night. She glanced around, seeing that everyone else had already gone, leaving her the only one dancing to the now silenced music. Everyone, that was, except her personal guard.

Their eyes met at the same time, but Marinette had been glancing at him all night. She wished he could have partaken in the festivities. He’d looked so lonesome, and she wished she could have relieved him of his duties, even just for one night.

Adrien had been watching over Princess Marinette for almost one year, and she’d taken quite a liking to him. He was kind, thoughtful, and respectful. Her last guard could not be described as such. She owed Adrien many times over, though he always denied that fact gracefully.

Marinette glided over to him lightly, even though her feet ached in her uncomfortable shoes. Still enchanted by the orchestra’s beautiful performance that night, the music danced through her mind continuously, and when her guard spoke, she thought she might as well be listening to music then, too.

“Princess, it’s a quarter past midnight,” he spoke gently, watching her smile widen. She nodded at him, twirling around a few times.

“My eyes aren’t heavy, not one bit,” she sighed happily, stopping and looking at him once more, seeing his smile that never seemed to falter when he looked at her. She bent down to take her slippers off, relieving her feet a little.

“Are you in pain, Princess?” he wondered. She smiled, shrugging gently.

“It’s nothing I can’t handle,” she spoke, handing him her slippers when he reached out to take them. “Thank you, Adrien.” He bowed slightly, and she turned towards the door to the ballroom.

“Would you mind accompanying me to my room? I sent my lady’s maid to bed hours ago, and I’ll need someone to unbutton my dress,” she smiled, briefly turning to look at him and seeing that he had an incredulous look on his face. She blushed immediately, trying to stop in her tracks mid-twirl to explain and ending up on the ground.

“Princess!” he exclaimed, rushing to help her up. He offered a hand, pulling her onto her feet again effortlessly.

“Ow!” she yelped, shifting her balance to accommodate the ankle she realized she’d twisted. “As clumsy as ever,” she commented, laughing a little and looking up at him and seeing the worry on his face.

“I’ll be okay,” she reassured him, dusting off her dress.

“Would you allow me to carry you to your chambers, Princess? I wouldn’t want you to further your injuries,” he offered, stretching his hand out towards her. She placed her hand in his, trying not to think about how she wished they could have danced together tonight, especially with that look in his eyes.

“Thank you, Adrien. You’re always so kind,” she stated, hiding her blush by looking down.

“Anything for you, Princess,” he replied as he gently scooped her up, smiling down at her before beginning the walk to her room. Her chambers were on the opposite side of the castle from the ballroom, so she was almost thankful for her clumsiness; walking all that way with her sore feet would have hurt more, she mused.

But somehow, staring up at his determined features passed the time quicker than she would have thought, her eyes getting lost in his own. He looked so steadfast and so focused, and she didn’t know how to tell him he looked beautiful without embarrassing him or herself, so she didn’t try.

Adrien set her down just inside her door, having her test her ankle.

“I think it’s okay now, I hardly feel any pain,” she told him, seeing him relax and smile back at her.

“Wonderful, Princess,” he nodded, glancing through the door into her room. “You wanted me to come in?” She bit her tongue, smiling and nodding. She hadn’t realized her request had sounded so unseemly.

“I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable,” she spoke as she turned away from him, walking towards her vanity and beginning to untie her hair and remove the pins.

“No, Princess,” he said quietly, remaining by the door. “I was simply surprised.” She smiled at that, realizing she’d been humming one of the pieces the orchestra had played.

Marinette began brushing out her hair, wondering when she’d let it get so long. She preferred shorter hair, but as long as it was kept up and out of her way, she’d often forget that it grew rather quickly.

She glanced in the mirror, looking behind her to see Adrien gazing at the floor but smiling to himself.

“What is it?” she wondered, pausing her humming.

“Nothing, Princess,” he answered. “It’s just that you remember that song like you composed it yourself.” She giggled, flattered by the compliment.

“Well, I danced for many hours,” she sighed happily, feeling like she was floating despite the way her body ached and longed to rest.

“Did you enjoy yourself?” He had looked away from her, and she set down her brush.

“I did, but none of my supposed suitors were very proficient dancers,” she recalled, thinking of how one prince nearly took some fabric off the bottom of her dress with his foot. She turned to look at her guard, noticing he’d been about to say something but stopped himself.

“What is it, Adrien?” she wondered, and she could have sworn he’d blushed, though the light was so dim.

“Well,” he started, scratching the back of his neck. “I’d be happy to try and match your talent if you’d allow me the pleasure, Princess.” She blinked quickly, feeling her own cheeks flush as his eyes met her own.

Marinette stood, walking over to him and smiling without hesitation.

“May I have this dance?” he asked, holding his hand out to receive her’s. She bit her lip, taking his hand once again. She curtsied, and he bowed formally, her heart fluttering as her wish seemed to be coming true right in front of her.

His hand moved to her waist, his other cradling her hand gently. As they began to waltz, she winced, having stepped wrong and felt her ankle begin to hurt again. He stopped, looking as if he would let her go. But then he smiled again, his ceaseless smile reserved just for her.

“I have an idea, if you don’t mind, Princess,” he grinned, and she couldn’t say anything. She could only nod, caught up in wondering what magic he had that made her knees feel weak with just his smile.

He shifted his hands, gently lifting her only to set her down so that her feet rested on top of his.

“Hang on tight, Princess,” he smiled before taking off in a waltz again, making her giggle as she was pulled along and spun and bounced around her room. She wished that the whole night had been like that. She didn’t want to think about any of those suitors or silly princes trying to win her affection. She would be happy with just this. Just Adrien.

When he stopped and set her down, her cheeks ached, too, and she could tell that his smile had been etched into his features.

“Thank you, Princess,” he grinned, bowing again.

“You’re most welcome, Adrien,” she giggled, curtsying for him once more. She fixed her hair, moving it out of her face, when a strand got caught in her top button, just below the nape of her neck. Adrien noticed immediately, always attentive and aware of his surroundings.

“Let me help,” he offered, and she turned around for him to be able to reach.

Adrien gently unhooked her hair from the button, and she felt his hands hesitate afterwards.

“Would you still like help with your dress, Princess?” he asked quietly, and she felt her heart flutter.

“Yes, please,” she replied, a lot quieter than she’d meant to.

He swept her hair out of the way, his fingers brushing the nape of her neck and leaving her with goosebumps. She shut her eyes tight, trying to focus on not blushing. He was her guard, nothing more than a very good friend.

She felt him unbutton to just above the small of her back, unsure if there was a draft or if she could feel his breath on her bare skin.

“Will you be able to do the rest, Princess?” he asked, barely above a whisper.

“Y-yes, thank you,” she answered, holding her bottom lip in between her teeth and feeling too embarrassed to face him again.

“Will that be all for tonight?” She felt her heart’s pace quicken at the thought of him leaving, but she could only nod, not wanting to keep him from resting as well.

“Then, if I may, Princess, request one thing?” he wondered, and she nodded again.

“May I call you by your name, just this once?” Her heart, she was sure, had stopped completely. But she managed to turn to look at him, seeing his cheeks a gentle shade of pink, his sheepishness unmistakable even in the low light.

“You may,” she whispered, her eyes wide in anticipation. His expression flashed with something she didn’t quite catch before he turned around. He walked to the door, scratching his neck like she knew he would.

“Goodnight, Marinette,” he spoke clearly, stealing one last glance at her before leaving her alone. The blush on her cheeks never quite disappeared, and the sound of her name on his lips echoed through her mind like a symphony.

suggestions for a young writer? im 15 and i just started seriously writing about a year ago~ since then I've written mostly poetry but I really write other stuff like short stories or plays too! but i always have trouble making my ideas ideas into something and just deciding how or what i want to write. and i get so worried that i lose motivation! i think that i first want to tackle trying to make characters/a simple short story. advice, tips, or tricks? thank youuu!

Hi! I’m glad you’re ready to get started! Beingeager about writing is the best. Writing a poem is a lot like writing a shortstory, so you’re on the right track. Good writing is precise and almost lyrical.

It can be really difficult to maintain motivation.Most people will advise you to write every day, which is good advice, but it’sjust not always feasible. The more you write, the better you will get!

Personally, titles and concepts and characters areall equally likely to get me started on a project. A cool title might pop up inmy head, and then I develop what story and characters go with it. Or I’ll havea concept that I’ll develop and label. Other times, I start with a characterand figure out who they are and what they do.

Keeping motivated can be really difficult whenyou’re unsure of your capabilities as a writer. But the more you wait to putyour ideas to the page, the harder it will be to pick things back up. Onceyou’ve gone a week without writing, one more day seems like nothing. One moreweek, one more month… where does it stop?

I’ve seen people suggest leaving off in the middleof a sentence. When you do that, you are setting up for success. You alreadyknow exactly how that sentence will end and where it will lead. So once you sitdown with it again, you can hit the middle of the sentence without staring at atotally blank page.

Hi! Your question makes me quite sad. If you liketo write, then you should pursue it. It’s that simple.

School doesn’t help much in terms of creativewriting. Over the summer, when I was little, my mom would make my sister and mewrite short stories. It kept me in the habit of writing even when school wasn’tin session.

(Wanna know a secret? I often got stuck halfwaythrough my story, so I’d coerce my sister into showing me hers. Then I wouldwrite the same events but in my own words. I did this for quite a while onesummer. Maybe two.)

Not only does school keep you ridiculously busy,but it also doesn’t like teaching creative stuff much either, because math andscience are deemed as more important than anything related to the arts.

All those negative voices banging around in yourhead along with all the good ideas you have? You need to learn to silence them.Those things are what you are being trained to think.

Here’s what nobody seems to know about writing:you have to start somewhere. No one starts off as an amazing writer.

People expect writers to have this magical well ofintuition, but honestly, it just comes from practice.

You know that thing about practicing 10,000 hoursin order to become a master at something? It applies to writing, too.

Writers write.

You need to watch and write things down–what youobserve can be the basis for characters or plot or whatever. Eavesdrop on astranger’s phone conversation to get a peek into other people’s lives. Sit on abench in the mall and watch people go by.

Do you know how babies learn? They observe otherpeople doing things and then try to mimic them.

I don’t mean that fledgling writers are babies, ofcourse, but I mean that you can get your best work by reading other people’swork.

Figure out what you like to read, what you don’t liketo read. And then ask yourself WHY.

What is it about that book you hated? Was it thecharacters? The plot? The slow story-telling?

What did you love about that one book? How did itmake you feel? What parts made you feel that way?

I was in middle school when I began reading a Series of Unfortunate Events (I’m25, for comparison’s sake). Do you know what my writing sounded like while Iwas reading those? Lemony Snicket. It wasn’t on purpose, but that’s just whathappened. (Also for comparison’s sake, I now have had a short story publishedin an actual anthology and completed a 60-page poetry collection as my creativethesis, as well as a book that I’m trying to get published.)

The more you read, the more you gain. If you readenough books, then you’ll have influences from all over that create a uniquewriter: you.

You are the sum of everything you have ever reador seen or thought about.

Yes, you’re a teenager. But that doesn’t stop youfrom observing the world and teaching yourself to understand other writers’work.

If you want to write something but are worriedthat it sounds too much like somebody else, then figure out why it sounds thatway. Is it just you that thinks it sounds that way? Or do other people tell youthat as well? Find out what it is that makes it sound like that. Is it thenarration? The plot? The themes?

Regardless of your answers, you are able to makeit unique to you.

You are a writer, and whatever you write will beyours and yours alone.

As far as plot development goes, I find thatoutlining helps. I don’t always keep to the outline, but askingyourself “Then what happens?” after each event that you write down is thebest thing you can do for yourself.

A plot is a series of events. If you know whathappens naturally after something, then you write that down. It also helps ifyou understand WHY something happens.

She goes to the mall.

Then what happens?

She ends up going home and crying in her room.

Why? What caused this? What physical actionscaused her to want to leave the mall? What mental actions occurred because ofthe physical actions?

She runs into someone she used to be best friendswith, and they get into a fight. This makes her feel disappointed in her friendbut also unsure of herself because she doesn’t know what she has done to makeher friend act that way. She places the blame on herself instead of on herformer friend. This is because she has been told growing up that everything isher fault and that her younger brother can’t do anything wrong.

See what I mean? And it’s okay to ask yourselfwhat you would do in that situation. But your characters are not you. Theyprobably won’t react like you would. And that’s okay and important.

As I told my students last year, ask yourself WHYand HOW after each sentence, after each paragraph, after each plot point, aftereach whatever. It will keep your story going until it reaches its naturalconclusion.

The Update I Promised You All About My Last OOC Post

So, I’ve been telling people for awhile that I would write this out soon, but kinda put off. But I’ve gotten around to it cause I know it’s important.

Under a read more for length.

I told you all that because of my boyfriend possibly leaving me, I’d be a little in the deep end of emotions and probably would be emotionally unstable for the next while.

But, we talked it over a little, and apparently he talked to his guy friends about our situation, and they seemed to be supportive.

My boyfriend of 9+ years decided that he enjoyed the good times with me more than he had self doubt.

What I think was going on was that we’re both young. And we started dating before highschool. (A pretty young age) So I think he was going through a time of doubt, unsure about his future and if he was making the right decisions.

Neither of us ever really had the chance to date other people since we met and kinda stuck together. I think he’s had the same anxiety I (And pretty much everyone else in the universe with a significant other) have felt. Those lingering voices asking if you really love this person. If you made the right choice, or what if there’s someone else out there for you that you missed? He says he loves me, is attracted to me still, and enjoys the time we have together, but was nervous about it still. Which I understand. Everyone fears the future, everyone fears making the wrong decision.

This fear of his was agitated by a fight we had over something trivial about a week ago.

But apparently, he thinks that because he still loves me, enjoys my company, etc etc, that he wants to work through it. As we always have.

Things have gone back to normal, they seem quite alot better. I gave him the chance to leave to explore other options, and he still chose to stay with me. It’s an odd feeling. I feel happy and thankful, but I’m also still scared and nervous about the future. Hopefully we’ll turn out alright, as time has progressed between us, things have only gotten better.

And I hope it stays that way.

Thank you to everyone who supported me or tried messaging me to be supportive. I’m sorry if I never messaged you back. I just wasn’t feeling good enough to do so. (I hate giving one worded answers of ‘Thank you’. Feels too impersonal.)

I am currently 29 years old and just recently married. I have come to a decision I have to make on my health insurance. I am not planning on getting pregnant for at least the next 2 years. So do I or do I not take the maturnity insurance. It would be a differance of 140.00 a month! Crazy since I am on the pill trying not to get pregnant. But it is still possible to get pregnant on the pill, but highly unlikely. So my question is do I take it to be on the safe side or waive it until it gets closer to that time. Money is tight and I hate to sink money into something I will hopefully not need. Any views on the situation would be much appreciated. Thnx.

I really need help finding a good health insurance option. I started my own company in 2009 and have kept it active and grew it slowly ever since. I was, until recently, employed at a large bank where I had good health and dental benefits. I recently left the job to take my business full time and scale it up. I am doing that full time now and it's been about a month since I left my job. I elected to keep my dental insurance through COBRA, because it will only cost me about $23/month.
