this is my element (+ album)

asking me to pick my fave album is like asking an orphan matron to pick her favorite baby boy

so when i was a kid we had this skateboard vid by "element skateboards" on DVD

they were this skateboard kit slash apparel company that was all about progressivism and shit and they did these much lauded comp tapes of dudes riding around on their boards and doing the dopest of macho tricks on the shit

we had some of their merch actually

mostly clips from cali i think and i mean the camerawork is fucking insane on some of those shots

anyways he had an E-mu SP-1200 which is a really oldschool sampler invented by dave rossum in the late 80s

revolutionary to the hip hop scene

nosdam had this mega distinct sound to his music that i always wanted to replicate on my own beats

i dont know for sure if he used it on T.I.M.E. but he uses some of the same samples from "vol. 9" which was exclusively SP-1200 so im gonna get a lil j’accuzi on that

All or Nothing and lowave records

Strap in because this is gonna be a long one. This post will try to shed some light on how the whole lowave records thing works, how you can use this music, how it is being distributed, and what all a contract with lowave would include. All this and more below the cut!

Let us start with the basics: What is lowave records?

Quite succinctly summed up on their website as follows:

They make and distribute royalty-free music for content creators - specifically video-format content creators like Youtubers and streamers - they share some streaming revenue (30%, we'll get into that) with the creators who are labelled 'co-artists' and get promotion of their music through the content creators.

So, that brings us to the next big question: What is royalty-free music?

This is music that is free to use. Yes, by anyone, by Dan and Phil, by other creators, by you and me, any of us. This is by no means a new thing of course, anyone who has created content online would have come across other such services. just as an example, bensound.com hosts a large library of royalty-free music which you can use in any video by simply crediting the site in your description. Lowave works in a similar fashion. The music is not copyrighted. However, the rights to the music are held by lowave records and there are limitations on its use, which we will get into ahead.

How is the money working (preliminary edition)?

I will add details to this later when I discuss the contract, but let's see the info we get straight away from the FAQs: You do not have to pay them anything to make music for you

The money is coming in from the streaming platforms, depends completely on amount of streams, and is shared between lowave and the creators

Also from the FAQs: how can this music be used?

Anyone can freely use any of the music from lowave records, which means that yes, you can use any music from All or Nothing for your purposes with credit, it will not be taken down

Is this the only music we will hear on dapg now? Will there be more albums?

Not necessarily! This isn't an exclusive deal, DnP can use any music they want on the channel. As for new albums, seems like it depends on how this one does (and it seems to be doing quite well!) which will unlock future avenues for more collabs with lowave

Okay BASICS DONE if you're still reading you're probably here for the real meat so let us get into it

How is the money working (director's cut)?

Let us start with the terms on the partner agreement:

Content Creators get 30% of the 'remaining income'. This basically means any costs that streaming platforms are deducting, any processing fees, taxes etc will be deducted before the 30% share is calculated. The second point there basically means that the deductions here do not include business expenses of the label itself, ie when the label calculates its own profit production costs and various other expenses are deducted from the income, but these costs will not affect the revenue received by the content creators (You are probably already thinking 'how is this company earning enough to keep going?' and I will touch on that later as well)

Payment installments are simple enough but here we see a third party enter the chat: DistroKid. Who is DistroKid and why are payments going through them, Hazel? I hear you ask. Well I'll tell you dear readers:

It is basically a service that takes a yearly fee for putting your music on streaming platforms efficiently and then pockets 0% of the royalties. The royalties go from the streaming services (eg Spotify) to DistroKid who then send it to the rights-holders (in this case, lowave records). lowave records is using this service for a yearly fee to upload all their music through.

But wait! If DistroKid is working with lowave, and lowave owns all the rights, why is DistroKid making direct payments to the content creators?

Well, over the years they have offered a bunch of services:

I am guessing lowave is making use of the teams feature to send royalties owed to content creators ("collaborators") directly from Diskworld, which makes sense, the less people money goes through the less chances of mishandling.

People have of course been talking about what percentage Spotify even pays for many many years. The short answer: we don't know for sure because it is confidential, Spotify won't tell and artists aren't allowed to. The longer answer: people have estimated from a bunch of publically available data that the share seems to be 70-30 (rights-holders- spotify).

However spotify is not paying per stream anymore so that makes these figures harder to pin down. they are using a 'streamshare' system which is much more convoluted:

That was all about the money, now let's talk Licensing

Creators can use this music in any capacity, and do not have to share any of the revenue from their own content with lowave. They have put a stipulation that it may not be used in a way that is "illegal, immoral, discriminatory or derogatory to [lowave]" but what constitutes 'immoral' and 'discriminatory' is not really defined.

The other limitation applies to the contracted Content Creators only as far as I can tell: they are not allowed to remix, sample, or edit these songs without prior permission. This probably only applies to altering the songs and playing under the same name, so fan remixes should not run into issues here, as long as they are not monetised. (thanks kate @goldenpinof for making me think about this part a bit more, I think it should be safe, but even royalty free music cannot be transformed without permission at least in a commercial capacity)

They will also make more music free of cost if the streaming targets they set are being met by the albums produced. The process:

Other services they provide will be handling the creator's account which they set up (DanAndPhilBeats in this case) on streaming platforms and making changes as required, so the Cheeky Banter -> Project X thing was probably done from their end, possibly an older change that they forgot to update?

Also below are promotional obligations:

The promotion wasn't a one-time thing, it is expected to be ongoing, so we will probably be hearing about this in future videos as well. However, later in the partner agreement it is added that this has to be done as often as possible in a way that is "natural and appealing to their audience" which again, is pretty vague wording

Also the licensing goes both ways, so lowave can also use segments of the content DnP make that has the music in the background to promote their music:

Additional stuff from the contract:

lowave takes the guarantee of creating original works that it has the rights to and which do not infringe on copyrights, and the creators likewise take the guarantee not use the songs in content which infringes copyright. If there are any disputes regarding such infringement in the future the record and the creators have to back each other up (including sharing legal fees)

I mentioned before some parts of the agreement being written in vague language. There is also a clause that says if any provision ends up being illegal/not possible to enforce by a court (eg if a court were to it's impossible to say whether content featuring the songs was 'immoral') then only that provision will be removed, the rest of the contract stands.

The waiver part basically means that if any of the parties decide to not sue or forgo a complaint about breach of contract, that does not mean that those provisions are now unavailable, they can still sue later on or for some other breach if they wish.

That's the contracts done. Some of the framing there makes it seem to me like it's a pretty small company. The revenue they hope to generate does not seem to be very sustainable, especially since the revenue is being shared with content creators but the cost is not and they are additionally paying for other services like DistroKid.

So I looked more into this record label: they started business in 2022. If you go to their socials though, twitter and instagram they have followers in double digits and post very sparsely. Their tiktok seems to have nothing on it at all (thanks @lesbiandanhowell for the screenshot) and you may have noticed, Dan did not tag the lowave account at all when he announced the album on twitter

The agreement never mentions creators promoting lowave's social channels or tagging them either (and it is quite odd, I have worked with a bunch of organisations in their infancy and this is, now more than ever, a common requirement from collaborators). lowave records does not seem to be actively working towards promoting themselves on social media or building an online presence, even though they have been operational two years producing music throughout.

There are three people involved with the company on public record:

Benjamin Johnson listed as 'Head of Production' is probably the 'Ben' Dan has been talking about who made the songs. Seems like their scale of operations is not very big and possibly not a lot of producers in the records at all (despite the spotify page saying they have 'producers' plural, but that doesn't have to mean a lot many lol). Anyway, that would solve the mystery of 'how are they playing their employees?' if there aren't many employees to begin with (not even an intern to manage their social media it seems).

Look at the last person in the screenshots though: Robin. I looked at what other companies Robin is associated with and several of them - yeah several different operations that he's involved in - have the same correspondence address of '60 Thorpe Road...', so probably operating out of a ghost office (just to have a registered address and receive mail at etc). And one of these businesses that Robin is associated with is RWD, the business that made lowave records' website for them:

The no-cost production of royalty-free music, little attention to social media presence, vaguely written contract, seemingly small scale of operations with technical assistance like website design coming from an affiliated organisation makes me think that lowave records might be a side project. A labour of love, possibly, hoping to sustain itself enough to keep putting out royalty-free music in a time of extreme crackdown on copyrighted music use.

It makes sense to use content creators for promotion, gets you way more streaming than making your own music and putting it out. And the incentive of unique but guaranteed royalty free music at no cost is great for content creators of all sizes. It is far from sustainable on its own though, especially with streaming revenue being basically peanuts, and I do not think there's much interest in gaining a following or putting in that effort either, so it's probably a very small business by a few people. How long it manages to sustain itself as a project I am not sure, but it certainly isn't looking like something particularly geared towards profit and growth in its current state.

So it has just been revealed that the upcoming Bishoujo Starscream figure (TF x Kotobukiya collab) will also be available in a variant face version (as-yet unrevealed which retailer this will be exclusive to).

The face is, specifically, designated as the "Please forgive me, Megatron" face.

Other design notes include:

Underneath an ambitious, cunning smirk, Starscream’s false loyalty is represented by a precisely done necktie.

The active design of the survival jacket she wears is reminiscent of a jet pilot and sports the color scheme of Starscream’s original robot design.

The wings have been recreated as a gym bag slung over her shoulder, reminiscent of the transformation feature of the original design.

(my own observation) The braids evoke the vents on the sides of the Seeker model head.

XZ’s GQ February issue candies 🍬

now that we all had the time to appreciate the lovely photos and videos from that cover & collab — which is honestly a whole meal on it’s own, now is the time for some sweets. 🫶🏼 nothing too extravagant, a few similarities and clues we have connected only. i think the best candy still is the fact that it’s now confirmed that zz & wyb both have a good relationship with gq. even rocco going as far as choosing xz to start having simultaneous cover releases with other countries. sit tight and wait for all the toxic narratives to be proven wrong. don’t sweat it. the road ahead is long. let’s enjoy life and support the boys! 🫶🏼

One thing i noticed, and was actually surprised about was WYB posting an ad for Super X as early as 8:00 AM. Tho he may post at 8:05, which is rare, he usually does ad posts at 10:00. The 8:05 is mostly done by the brands. We have talked about them trying their best not have work overlap, this is a minor one, but as soon as GQ posted at 9:30 i feel like i know what’s happening. Then it didn’t stop till 12:00 nn. It doesn’t help cause i’m clowning that the short film feature for this cover was assigned Chapter 8. WYB posted at 8, the full short film is 8. What a nice coincidence!

Knowing WYB is not a stranger to doing short films with GQ and their love for movies! It wouldn’t really surprise me now if GG does a full feature about LOCH with them. These two really chose the same publication to do exclusive for their projects 😌😌

the similarity that i love is them in the bathroom and then looking at the mirror. tho wyb’s are scenes from HB, these stills were first seen @ GQ.

there is a story here 👀👀

it’s nice too how GQ used ZZ’s photos and put them in the frames. what a nice touch! since this is essentially his dream 💭

+ peter pan pop up art book on the bed too!

overall, there is really not that much we can clown about when it comes to photos alone. tho what gg is wearing has an interesting story as shared by @rainbowsky here. some may say it’s the stylist and magazine’s choice but we still love seeing the association. In addition, the clothes were inspired by Nicole Kidman’s clothes in a Chanel perfume ad. i love the unconventional wedding dress choice here, it fits them! <3

moving on to the biggest way we can cpn tho is the interview & cover story.

i especially liked the questions, it wasn’t cutesy. it asked what needed to be asked.

here are some of the similarities i found with them and their outlook in life and career. 🤍

First of all, being professional is an unavoidable topic. You can have a non-major background, but you must have excellent professional skills. This is what I want to do, this is who I am. I feel that I am not enough, and i’m too far behind.

I think (improving acting skills) is a cumulative process. You can’t make a big step forward with just one movie. This is difficult for me to happen. So you have to keep filming, but you have to keep filming good films and don't consume yourself.

It’s the intent to be a better actor and the self awareness of not having that “background” people expect them to have. However, they can compensate by being professional. by being the hardest working person in the room. Sometimes I feel like it’s okay for them to praise themselves and not always be this critical, but i guess that’s what make them the best too cause they have high standards for themselves.

At present, I want to be an actor who makes the audience like you. Maybe everyone is not your fan, or even not particularly interested in you, but you know that he has a drama, Do you want to watch it? His dramas are all good. I want to do this. This is my current goal. Is it possible to become the actor I like? This is a rule.

THIS. This!!!!!! I feel like they both have this outlook. They don’t need every single person to be their “fan” but the goal is to become known and liked by the general public. That people are familiar with them as good actors with excellent works. It’s why there is absolutely no need to beat yourself up on who is the better fan. It doesn’t keep the boys up at night. Lol.

There are many. For example, Zhou Xun has always been my favorite actor.

Zhou Xun! Who has worked with WYB in various projects, primarily with Chanel! I hope ZZ gets to work with her too.

I used to take the subway every day. for me there’s nothing I can't do. What do you think I can do? Say hello and leave. It’s just that I don’t want to cause confusion and trouble for everyone or cause a bad reaction.

The two of them have the same intention of not wanting to cause trouble to the people. That means making sure their fans do not cause unnecessary public issues like gathering in certain places.

Everyone has their own boundaries, and some people have no sense of propriety. I stay away from such people, but when the boundaries are broken again and again and the bottom line is touched, I will get very angry.

Chongqing pepper is here! lol. I see them being very patient and understanding cause they know what people expect of celebrities. But they won’t also take things lying down. They will fight if need be.

In principle, I am a very rigid person. If I insist on something and I think it is right, it will be difficult to be convinced. For example, if I want to be an actor, I don’t want to do anything other than being an actor.

I just want to do it well, just try my best right now. Maybe the result is not good, but what should I do? This is all I can do.

Sounds familiar? Especially the part that says I want to do it well? They have the same braincell 🙃

Now let’s look at the cover story. First, i wanna point out the comment of the interviewer about ZZ: “Before meeting, I thought Xiao Zhan would be very cautious about interviews. To my surprise, Xiao Zhan had a rare sense of relaxation, answered all questions, and even had some humor.”

Which is actually a common misconception about XZ or — you know what? he was kind cautious before but as time goes by, he became more relaxed and candid with his answers. It’s still insightful, but not as practiced. In the Q&A, he mentioned that there are things that cannot be said. Setting boundaries like that. Similarly, WYB is the same. We’ve heard stuff saying that he is in a more relaxed state now. I love that for them!

I still sneak out to ride a bicycle, take a walk, and do a CityWalk. Only once, just now in after walking in the alley for 5 minutes, I was recognized. I also sneaked into the cinema to watch a movie. No one will care about you, really. after leaving the Internet, many things will be solved easily. Sometimes the world is right in front of us.

This goes out to everyone that says how can they go out? How are the CPNs of them spending time together be true? Well this is the answer. Sneaked into a cinema to watch a movie? I hope they do that together too ^^

When he goes to different cities, Xiao Zhan will bring the same type of pillows and quilts. "I will bring everything that can help me sleep well." He has also tried aromatherapy lamps, lavender essential oil, and various other products that make him fall asleep when applied on his body.

This is such an easy cpn for us. Remember that time DLS clowned WYB about the aromatherapy candles? HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Hehe I bet you all didn't think voice acting was among my list of hidden hobbies/talents didja? (I’m just full of surprises x3) Well... I can only hope that I delivered well enough here. (please feel free to laugh at my attempted Yakou voice… LMAO)

So this is yet another collab project that @kazinsblog and I did together. The story is based on a kokowendy ch4 canon divergent skit that I made way back last fall. When Kazin saw it, she wanted to make it into a full comic. I didn't protest (I never do LOL) but then I wanted to try something.

I've never attempted a solo dub of a comic before, and honestly I didn't think I would with RainCode due to a majority of the characters being male. Sadly with my naturally high voice I can only do so much with attempting male voices. I usually only do female or child character voices.

But since Kurumi is the lead role of this story, and has the most lines, I decided to give it a try. I do love Kurumi (she's my best girl) so I hope I did her justice here. I like to think I did her voice fairly well. I struggled a bit with the guys (and Halara) but I think my Yuma is decent enough... x'D (plus it was really fun making him sound tired and out of breath :3)

I do enjoy Kokowendy as a ship, though I'm not a huge shipper. But these two are just too cute... ;w; So I think a scenario like this suits them both. Plus it gives Kurumi a chance to be reliable and try to help her beloved hero in his time of need <3 Honestly it can even be seen as platonic. Its very tame (the only small hint is that Yuma blushes at some point, but that's it)

I had a lot of fun doing this!! I got the voices and editing done in only 3 days, so it’s definitely not a long lasting project. (on my end anyway) But I still think it’s a pretty big project with all of the work both of us did. Editing the video was probably the most fun part for me >w< I knew exactly what BGM and sound effects I wanted months in advance c: I only hope I did the editing style of it right. Comic dubs are very peculiar in the way they’re done… 💦 (also no I’m not putting this on YouTube, this is a tumblr exclusive ONLY! And I give NOBODY permission to re-upload it without my consent!)

I’m not sure if I'm the first that's attempted a RC comic dub before, but if I am, then I am very happy c: Idk if I'll do another full one though. Like I said too many of the characters are male... x'D This may be a one time thing for me here. But if I were to do one, I figured why not on a comic that was made specifically for me? c: (ty again kazin!💕)

Both of us work grueling jobs that we are severely struggling with. We are both disabled, trans, and Neurodivergent. I work 8-9 hour days on my feet constantly to the point I've developed a need for a cane just to be able to get by. I'm also AUDHD and have begun to experience symptoms of severe burnout but I cannot stop working retail. Currently the NHS has decided I'm too high functioning/not bad enough to qualify for CBT or other therapies for my PTSD as well, despite the fact I've recently undergone traumatic events and have had multiple breakdowns. So if I want to treat these things I have to pay for it out of pocket and I cannot afford that.

My husband is in a job that has him constantly exhausted from early days and late night shifts, and the environment is not only discriminatory towards trans people but also to those with mental health issues. But again he can't leave his job.

Both of us are at our limit and we need something to change.

I apologize if this has already been discussed.

Disclaimer, I'm sorry if this is hard to read or follow. Sometimes I don't have a complete thought and my mind just bounces around. lol. I'm trying to make it as cohesive as possible.

I think 🎃 anon messages were pointing to this year, not last year. Especially the 5th message about the kitchen (Studio) and a team of chefs (Artists). I believe that they were talking about an album full of collaborations. "an exclusive menu" Also the part where is says "people line up around the block for your restaurant" We patiently wait for the album.

I kind of have two different theories on this.

1- Now with Taylor always flashing ✌️I think it could be pointing us to the fact that TTPD is going to be a double album. With that my theory is that the second part of TTPD is going to be a collab album.

Going back to the 5th message, "Someone is leaving early, abandoning their station. They stuff a recipe card in their pocket as they go." 🎃 continues on in the message that this person threatens to let the world know the secret menu. (leaked song list) Which brings me to the fact that the song list was leaked before Taylor announced it. But if Taylor decided to create a double album after this person left, they wouldn't know the rest of the "secret menu" Which means there is a double album.

2- The other theory I have is that Taylor is not working by herself. There are so many artists releasing albums this year. In the 4th 🎃 it says "I cannot share my role in this chess game, but friends have friends of friends" Now these artists can all be working together for something even greater. And collaborating on each others albums. Also many artists who are not in country, are releasing "country" albums this year. Beyonce, (though she did say it's not an country album, but it does have country roots) Lana Del Ray, Post Malone, and Zayn to name a few. What does that mean? I don't know, possibly they are working together to change the way music is done. Remove the corrupt corporations involved in music. Artists have more control now than they did 5 years ago. With streaming and the internet they are able to reach listeners more than on the radio. But I believe there is still a lot more going on behind closed doors than we know. And if we talk about the forced closeting that happens, possibly these artists are fighting against that as well.

I do think in the next few months these 🎃 messages will become more clear.

And I'm not quite sure if the last message about Halloween is literal. Because if you think about what people do on Halloween, they dress up as something they are not. And these artists who are in the closet have to pretend to be something they are not. They dress for the part, they act the part, just to make some people smile. I think when all this is done and over with, the masks will come off. And they will reveal their true selves. (possibly a mass coming out)

I also believe after TTPD (TS11, a story in 11 parts) Taylor is going to become either an independent artist or start her own record company. Which means if she waits to release Reputation and Debut under her own label, she will literally be taking back her Name and Reputation for herself only.

Thanks so much for the tag, @lyntergalactic! :D I feel like I've done this before, but it must have been a whole ago. It looks fun! (also, I'm pasting just the questions at the bottom of the post if anyone wants to copy those)

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 247, though I'm not really sure what the ratio is for images versus fics... Okay, apparently, 97 of them are tagged with 'fanart' and have fewer than 100 words, so somewhere around 100 image-only works and 147 fics.

2. What's your total AO3 word count? 1,141,145; which includes a few collabs and fics for which I just contributed an image.

3. What fandoms do you write for? TCW exclusively 😅 Though I've done a handful of images for other things like Arcane, Dune, Trigun, The Expanse, House of the Dragon...

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? A bunch of my works with the most kudos are images, but if we're talking fics, then I think it's just some of my oldest ones...

Will You Walk With Me? - Waxer's pov from the start of the war to the (fix-it) end, and it mostly focuses on his and Boil's friendship (Waxer & Boil or Waxer/Boil pre-relationship - take your pick). Even though this certainly isn't the best thing I've written, it's my baby. 🧡

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably You're Just Harder to See Than Most, which ends very sadly on its own, but it's part of a larger fix-it including Modulation above, so Fives and Echo get reunited.

8. Do you get hate on fics? No, just on one sketch dump, where someone went through 6 chapters of spicy cloneshippy images and then decided they needed to complain about it being gross and immoral 🤣 It was hysterical kjlksahfg

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Oh yes, I'm a certified smut goblin. Not really sure what the question means by 'what kind,' but I guess 'porn with feelings' is probably the AO3 tag that would most accurately describe all of the smut I've written XD

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Hm, I suppose if we're defining that as like, "what ship have you intensely shipped for the longest amount of time," it would be destiel? I was veeeeeery into that ship for many years.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I've had one wip sitting around for over a year, and for a while I was thinking I wasn't going to get back to it ever. But I made a little vibes playlist for it and had some help brainstorming, so I'm hopeful I can start tackling it again after I get some current stuff drafted.

16. What are your writing strengths? Starting something and working on it until it's finished.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I have a lot of trouble generating ideas on my own.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I think it's fine as long as it's either A. very short and clear from context or B. for some reason, the writer is intending to confuse the reader and obfuscate what was said. I know I've said it before, but I'm not gonna scroll to the bottom of a fic every few paragraphs to find the translations for whole phrases or sentences. If the amount of 'other language' starts making the dialogue difficult to follow, I'm just gonna nope out.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Technically, I wrote one thing for Gundam Wing back in like 2000, but I can't even remember what I did with it or what it was about, exactly. Other than that, TCW.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? flsdlfg that's really difficult... idk man, if it's quality we're talking about rather than sentimentality, I'd say it's a toss-up between these three 😅:

A beach house on the seashore, sticky, sandy skin, a swaying palm tree. A perfectly browned crème brulée. A delicately seasoned lobster. A slew of intricate cocktails. Your week in Cancun was proving to be nothing short of your expectations. Fun, a bit reckless, definitely free.

Everything was being documented on your Instagram page. Stories upon stories of your whereabouts, outfits, friends, and, obviously, food. After all, that’s what the majority of your followers were there for. Also the spectacular beach shots and the exclusive parties were appreciated; it all played into the rich life fantasy that was always beneficial to portray.

You’re known, you’re popular. Definitely not a Hollywood actress or a sold-out-concert superstar, but notable enough in your niche, in the realm of food blogging. Your food pictures have definitely clogged Pinterest at some point in time and a few restaurants have surely benefited from your reviews, your blog posts aesthetic, yes, yet concise and accurate.

So it’s not exactly a surprise when food magazines ask of you, a stimulating interview coming out of your collaboration. Or when a publishing company wants to have you advise future readers on the best eating spots in some European capital. Or also when a restaurant invites you personally to taste their cuisine, much like now.

The pretty invite stays projected on the screen as your eyes scan the pixelated words. It’s three am, but the muted ping of your phone was a temptation too big to resist. It’s an email from your manager forwarding you the message from the establishment, a popular one, it seems. You briefly imagine her excited tone behind the numerous exclamation points that accompany the few words of introduction.

You shouldn’t be doing this. Cancun is your vacation destination. Where to relax, unwind and rejuvenate. And yet, here you are, chewing on your bottom lip in contemplation. But then your eyes set on the final line of the invite; your brow arches in surprise. Dinner with the restaurant owner?

It’s not your preferred way to go about things, really. You’d much rather get to know the restaurant in its most organic form, how it usually is. You’re aware of the preferential, VIP treatment you get when you’re recognized, using the surrounding tables’ situation as a true gauge of customer service. But when, out of curiosity, you search your host, you don’t really care anymore.

It’s a bit embarrassing to fall for looks when it comes to rational decisions like these, but the striking beauty of the man before you is undeniable. Maybe it's the aloof aura that surrounds him, heavily set in the straight line of his lips. Or the wide shoulders that seem to struggle with the space inside his tailored shirts and blazers.

But when he’s there, right in front of you, looking down at you with a small, curt smile, arm outstretched in invitation, you get it. It’s everything, to be honest. He moves with confidence, not of the arrogant genre, but more of the matter-of-fact type: things need to be done this way, so he does them like that, no doubt in his mind.

He’s a strict man, you can tell. He walks with a stiff stride, a bit too statuesque to be spontaneous. He pulls out your chair with a smooth movement though, silently helping you, to then sit down in his own chair. And when he looks up at you, finally, you might add, citrine eyes shine under the lamp that hovers over your table. He looks oddly comforting, much more innocuous than his straight expression might suggest.

He’s much more awkward than what you pictured him to be, odd silences sometimes slipping into the conversation and settling for a few beats before a shy word of his comments on the food you’re about to eat. That’s when he glows, you realize.

He’s in his element, all discomfort gone from his expressionless face. He describes to you each and every ingredient, almost weaving intricate and picturesque explanations. Just almost, though. He falls short when he catches himself getting too carried away in the shiny glaze of the caramelized side greens. He’s quick to gain the sliver of composure lost, falling back into his routinely simplicity and straightforwardness.

He, to your surprise, looks at you with almost childlike curiosity as he raises his eyes once again, and the prettiest smile is set on your glossy lips. He can’t tell, but it’s most definitely the first genuine one of the night. It’s laced with an odd mix of amusement and endearment with a faint dash of hazy, wine-induced attraction. He doesn’t see all of that, the fact that you are actually before him has just sunk in; his mind is elsewhere.

Ushijima Wakatoshi has known you for some time. He’s never been one to care about food bloggers and critics, tending to have a very negative opinion of them, their arrogance and unthankfulness often slapping him across the face. So when he reads your interview in one of the top food magazines, he’s pleasantly surprised by your demeanor. Humble, down to earth, mature, likable. It’s a breath of fresh air, really.

And that’s where it starts. Binge reading your blog posts, that is. Poised but straight to the point. Never unnecessarily rude or harsh. Analytical but not complex. It’s almost enlightening, he gleans.

He subscribes to your newsletter, ready for each and every update, virtually following you across the globe as you taste and record your travels. He finds it really interesting how you seem to bleed beautifully into your writing; it’s almost like reading a diary at times. And Tendo finds it downright hilarious to repeatedly catch his workaholic boss swiping on his phone, tall man tucked in a secluded corner. And every time he passes by him and throws a glance, he’s, obviously at this point, on your website, brows tense in deep focus.

Ushijima Wakatoshi calls it pure and simple admiration. He respects your work, and finds your rise very inspirational. You struggled and worked to be where you are, just like he did. You have something in common, that’s why he likes, no, thinks highly of you.

It definitely has nothing to do with the way his eyes always fall on your dainty hands as you gesticulate in that one TikTok of yours. Or the apples of your cheeks that almost seem to explode when you laugh at a funny anecdote in your Vanity Fair interview on Youtube. Or the gentle curve of your waist that flows down into your hip in the dress you walked in with. Ushijima is a man who simply admires you, nothing more.

He just, for whatever reason, wants to keep it under wraps. So it’s convenient - or providential, if you will - when one of his employees approaches him with your instagram profile open on his phone. His eyes twinkle at the realization that someone he knows is aware of your name; it makes him oddly proud of you. But he doesn’t say anything, he just observes Goshiki babble and ramble about your work and your fame, as if his boss weren’t already aware of such basic information. Yes, basic. At least that’s what Ushijima, a dedicated fan of yours, thinks.

But he doesn’t bat an eye at the little, useless introduction he’s given; he maintains his stoic façade. He may slip when he’s told that you’re staying in Cancun for the week. And at the suggestion of inviting you over he gives his sturdy approval, one that Goshiki interprets as simple determination, not excited, hopeful, impatient expectation. It’s Tendo who sees right through his friend, grinning bemusedly at the almost feverish planning of his boss.

Ushijima sits down and plans a personalized menu for you, jogging his memory regarding your culinary likes and dislikes. He directs the little rearrangement of his restaurant, wanting to set the scene to something private and intimate, a little warm haven limited to the two of you, regardless of the sea of tables that will surround you. He even supervises the formatting of the virtual invite you’re sent, insisting to use one font over the other. It’s more appealing, he explains, even if, in reality, it’s the same one over on your blog, your favorite, he recalls.

First impressions matter, that’s what he says when he’s asked why such sudden changes take place. And even if his employees believe him, Tendo giggles behind his back.

He outrightly laughs when his friend flatly complains on the phone. Cufflinks are too formal, but a tie would be uncomfortable when eating. This is Ushijima’s debate, a silly one in Satori’s mind. But it’s a dilemma, a big one. One that has his shoulders droop and his forehead crease; one that has his hand scratch his chin and his mind race.

Their friendship is strong, with a deep understanding lining the bond, so when he’s given the advice to just be himself, Wakatoshi’s heart knows it’s sincere. On that evening, he approaches his restaurant with an odd sense of peace, the usual self confidence brimming from every step. He talks to his staff and encourages them, words succinct yet truthful. That’s their boss’ personality, and they appreciate the effort.

Everything seems to go to plan until he’s caught zoning out. Often. His eyes set on the way you grab hold onto your camera lens, almost maniacally adjusting focus and exposure. You’re a perfectionist, and he appreciates that, maybe a bit too much. So when you look up and ask him the ins and outs of the dish before you, he has no answer, torn out his little fantasy and pulled back on earth.

You take it all in stride, smiling warmly and repeating the question. You’re so gentle and polite that he finds himself feeling warm with juvenile embarrassment when answering you. He finds the whole exchange mortifying, you find the light blush on his cheeks adorable.

He thinks he can brush off his little blunder, but then Ushijima hyperfixates on the concentration in your eyes, unwavering and deep. It shines on your face, settles in your stance, anchors you to the ground. It’s mesmerizing, the entirety of you is. He lets his gaze drop, pupils rolling off the slope of your shoulders, down to the swell of your calves, until he slips deeper and deeper into his mind.

And over dinner, when you’re sitting opposite him, he gets distracted by the littlest things you do. He listens to you, even if he’s completely enraptured by the delicate twist and pull of your lips when you ask him to pour you some wine; or how your head tilts back to down the alcohol; or the slow, almost sensual, flutter of your lashes as you savor the distinct flavor. He’s lost in you.

And after many sincere compliments and a myriad of thanks, lingering touches dance along your waist as he takes you outside; he’s grown tired of just looking at you. A whiff of your perfume wafts into his nostrils, and he hates to admit that it stirs something deep within. But the nail in the coffin is probably the view of your ass swaying in the fabric that falls over your thighs. He has to get into action.

So when you gush about the beautiful view of the dark ocean, the gentle breeze chills him down his spine as opportunity peeks on the horizon. It’s quicker than a heartbeat, than the bat of an eye, and an offer tumbles out of his mouth, unrelenting underneath the sparkling stars.

You turn around, voice stuck in your throat, and a heat rises up your skin. It crawls from your neck to your face, from your belly to in between your thighs. He’s serious, oddly more than before. The look in his eyes is heady, deep and brazen. He’s probably never wanted anything more. Your lips part, and your answer spills from in between, shaky like the plume of a flame, but searing like its core.

And maybe the view from his place is much better indeed, but you don't have the chance to appreciate it, at least not while his hands hold onto your face and his lips press against yours.

It’s all so rushed: the clatter of his keys jamming into the lock; the way his leather shoes try to avoid your strappy heels as you kiss your way to the bedroom; the soft puffs of the pillows being thrown off the bed to make space for you.

He’s much more careful with your body. His hands dance along your sides, now resting on your waist, then going up to caress your back. And he never breaks the kiss, dragging you into a wonderfully consuming apnoea, a lack of breath that almost tingles, one that flows through you as pure desire.

And when he parts from you, lips glossy and flushed, he smiles at you, panting, breathing in your mouth, as you do with him. It’s as if oxygen weren’t an option, forgotten in the addicting dance your bodies are initiating, a rhythm that has you only needing each other.

Yes, because when he has you sit up to unzip your dress, all he wants is the warmth of your skin, so he kisses the crook of your neck lovingly, taking his time with each peck. Absolutely, because when he slips the thin straps off your shoulders, all he needs is to feel you in his hands, so he drags his palm along your sternum as the flesh of your breasts spills from his fingers. Without a doubt, because when your panties come off and a thin, crystalline web of your arousal breaks, he dies to have a taste of you, to bury himself in between your thighs. But then he scoots closer, pulling your sticky body into his, and as his muscular arm lays comfortably in the curve of your waist, your head sits peacefully on his chest. He presses a kiss on your forehead; it’s probably a silent ‘thank you’, one he doesn’t find the courage or the strength to say, one that you’d love to reciprocate with a spoken declaration. But in this particular case, it’s not needed.

You both bask in your afterglow, each one aware of that fizzling excitement that you both have to let go in favor of harsh reality. So you make the most of the moment, whispered conversations filling the little space between the two of you, hushed giggles laughed into the pillows.

Buried in sheets that need to be changed and heaps of rumpled clothing you understand each other, you find one the other. He’s lost in you, you’re lost in him. Both lost together.

Jeff Satur song theory

So there's something I noticed in listening to Jeff's English songs after Dum Dum came out last week. And it's just a theory, but it honestly was so interesting my brain just latched on and wouldn't let go.

For some caveats, I'm only counting songs he released in English that aren't related to tv shows, aren't collabs. So that means Fade, Hide, and Dum Dum. I'm specifying them having an English version, because there's not always full clarity with translated lyrics. With English releases I know that Jeff consciously chose the wording to evoke certain ideas/emotions, even if it may not be a direct translation to the original Thai.

So here's my theory...THE STAGES OF GRIEF.

The reason I thought about this was is interview with Woody where he talked about writing more melancholy music because he'd not had a successful relationship yet. Meaning for whatever reason they broke up, whether it was mutual isn't really the point, and honestly, the man is 28 (I think, I can't be bothered to Google) so in a decade I'd imagine he's had at least a few longer term relationships. But his songs that he writes are about his feelings after those 'failed' relationships. (I don't love the term failed, bc often it's not really anyone's direct fault, but I digress.)

But anyway, listening to Dum Dum, that's anger, 100% .

The lyrics scream anger and frustration, the aggression in the melody of the song, in the music video. It's all that white hot heat, and I think if you also look at the concept of there being two Jeff's in the video--there's a pretty common idea about anger turning someone into a different person. I've also seen people referencing the video in regards to Jeff kind of stepping back into the shoes of Kim almost in reference to what could Kim have been like if he lost Chay, or if he never found him, if he never became WiK, and I can definitely see that was well. In all of those scenarios, it's a Kim who's in mourning. A Kim who's grieving the loss of his true love, his first love, his chance at love. Grieving the loss of a future he decided for himself. There's a lot of possible subtext to read there. And all of this is what sparked the idea of grief and our human reactions to it as a possible theme of Jeff's music recently.

Going back and looking at the previous releases, we start with Hide, which was released in May of 2022. The lyrics, tone, feeling of the song, the say denial to me.

This idea of going to the places that remind him of their relationship. Asking to sing them one more song. Asking why they don't truly believe in his love for them. It also to me gives a feeling of maybe the relationship ending because they weren't in the same place as far as readiness for something public, serious, exclusive, there's quite a few reads here (which is why it's interesting). If you want to read it through a queer lens, as though one party was not ready to be out yet. I'm not here to speculate specifically on Jeff's sexuality, and honestly as a lyricist and composer, I don't think he needs to have direct 1:1 experience to be able to address that idea or include that as a facet of his lyrics.

The last song to go over is Fade. Fade to me brings to mind the bargaining stage, but in a little bit of a different way.

Normally with bargaining in regards to grief, it's very connected to denial, it's this concept of "if I had had done something different...", "if I made different choices...", "if I was a better person...". The music video offers the idea of his love interest dying, but this is of course applicable to just the idea of the 'death of a relationship'. It also relates to the story of the M/V on the level of "if I do better this life, maybe I wont lose them, maybe I'll be deemed worthy of more time with them..." Looking at the lyrics alone, without the context of the video, they can be seen as bargaining with the memory of the person. It's this exhaustion of being continuously reminded of a person, which makes you experience that grief over and over again. Our minds can't maintain that, regardless of the relationship you're grieving or the way in which that relationship ended.

In another aspect, not inline with this discussion, but certainly related in terms of this being a deep dive into his lyrics and concepts of his songs. I like that Jeff references crying. There's the overarching reason of it's important for boys and men to understand that crying is an acceptable reaction to grief and sadness. I think it really does matter, even with this not being the main point of the songs, it's still there, so it's still affecting listeners, it's still encouraging the idea of not being afraid of tears as a man, or as a human.

The lyrics of Fade say "crying but my eyes both have not been dry for days". He's deep in the grief still. Then in Dum Dum, "I used to cry but the tears is dry". He's starting to move on a little. I would say, based on the anger of Dum Dum, it's a mix of moving on and masking your pain with anger. I've said it before on here I'm sure, but it was pointed out by a therapist that anger is a secondary emotion. It's a reaction to something else, like frustration, like disappointment, and of course like grief or sadness. We bring anger to the forefront because it doesn't allow for too much analysis, and it also takes a lot of energy, which can help put you in a state where your mind becomes exhausted enough to rest. It's a similar idea to working out or doing activities you find physically exhausting in order to tire out your body.

Anyway, I don't know if any of you might have found this specifically accurate, relevant, interesting, but it's something that I just couldn't put away once I had sort of made the connection. In know they're loose connections, very much so, but I also don't think they're wild leaps.

381,482. It’s just that I can very easily write a 10k one shot, I have a lot of things to say, apparently. It just makes sense to illustrate every thought.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I’ve only written for Carry On because I’ve come used to them, but I’m interested in Wolfstar, so maybe in some time they will pop up too.

4.. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

I always do, it’s just that sometimes it takes me a while

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

That would be a WIP, but it’s a one shot 2k word “it’s hard to hide someone who loves you”. They both die at the end and it’s Simon rescuing Baz from the numpties, tell him he loves him and Baz gets killed! It’s just that I love making a character suffer along the story, but giving them a happy ending, so I’m not into writing a sad ending; it would kill me.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think “Done waiting” because it’s not angsty, so it feels happier, but I do give them a happy ending, even if it’s hurt/comfort.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Nop. Everyone who’s commented is so lovely.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do! OMG, I LOVE writing smut. I find it very relaxing and fun hahaha. I usually write them with a dom/sub dynamics, with bdsm, toys, and exploring. I do like writing kinky things; not into vanilla. And I prefer a dom Simon, he’s very lovely. And I always write them with enthusiastic consent, being so in love, and aftercare. It’s a must in my fics.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I’ve written Drarry within SnowBaz and from a book series I read when I was 10 (the wolves of mercy falls), but I’m normal about them.

Nope

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not really, it’s more like pin-pong-ing the ideas with another person, but I did write “Birthday Man” with the fandom! It was a fic for Simon’s birthday

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

SnowBaz OWNS me, but WolfStar is very close to ripping my heart out. And I am so very sorry, but I would die for MalMage. There’s a fic I’m plotting, and it makes me ache.

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I have several wips on my mind that I regularly come to, so I do plan on finishing them, but there are many ideas I’ve had that I just threw out. It was a thing in the moment, but not that serious to have me actually explore them more.

16. What are your wrimting strengths?

Angst and smut. I love writing dirty things and making my characters suffer. I l’m good at writing a lot, it’s very easy for me to write thousands of words. And I love dialogue.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Keeping things simple hahahaha. A short idea for a short silly fic is NEVER a short idea for me. I struggle with describing places, and well, I do have english for a second language, so it’s been a process for me to get better at grammar and phrasing. I’m not good at writing crack or fluff; it has to hurt.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I like it but I never know what it says if they don’t write it in the notes.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Carry On still. I’m living in a bubble hahaha. I’ve only written for my babies.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Definitely “The Second Chain” (smut). I wrote that fic exclusively for me and to me; I wrote all the things I like. And I like my Ballet AU because of all the backstories and how close SnowBaz feel to me (and Ebb). But I do have a MalMage wip, after all.

DMA'S praise 'amazing' Louis Tomlinson: "He's really cool, we respect him a lot"

Louis previously cited DMA'S as a heavy influence on his second solo album Faith in the Future

When we spoke to Louis Tomlinson ahead of the release of his Number 1 album Faith in the Future last year, he couldn't have been more complimentary about collaborators DMA'S.

The Sydney rock three-piece - comprising Johnny Took, Tommy O'Dell and Matt Mason - inspired tracks like All This Time on Louis' second solo record after striking up a relationship with the One Direction star back in 2019; and the band would 'love' to see a team-up soon.

Chatting exclusively to Official Charts around the release of their brand-new LP How Many Dreams?, DMA'S guitarist Johnny explains how Louis influenced a track on their 2020 album THE GLOW.

"We got in the studio with Louis the first time we met him," says Johnny. "We sat around playing music; we played him some tracks off THE GLOW and played him the demo of Cobracaine.

"He’s obviously got a really great ear for pop music – and music in general – and he was like ‘maybe you should get to the chorus quicker.’ Just a little comment like that really helped. It was a good call, as a structural thing. We thought ‘yeah, we should get to the chorus quicker,’ and it ended up sticking."

When we tell him we admire DMA'S openness to working with an artist like Louis where many rock bands might have pre-judged his pop beginnings, Johnny explains: "When you’ve reached the heights that Louis’ reached, you’d have to be a little bit ignorant or naïve not to realise how much amazing stuff he’s picked up along the way. That’s my favourite thing.

"If I get into the studio with somebody who’s 10 years younger or 10 years older than me, I learn something new every time. That’s the great thing about any musicians getting together in a room; you just start talking and discover things through that discussion.

"Louis’ an amazing guy. He put me on the door for his gig in Melbourne, and I went backstage. We’d just played that same venue a few months before, and it was great to see him in Sydney. He’s just such a good guy. I love the way he champions young musicians. I really respect that.

"Louis’ really cool, I don’t have a bad word to say about that guy. He’s an amazing songwriter, too."

And Louis isn't the only 1D lad to have impressed Johnny and his DMA'S bandmates. Liam Payne's also an artist the group admire.

"It was the same when I first met Liam," says Johnny. "He was the same as Louis; they’re these guys that are up on this level, but they love guitar music and music in general. They’re open to championing young bands, those bands that are smaller than them, and lifting them up. They’re passionate about the music and that’s what it’s all about; everyone lifting everyone up."

"I’d love to," beams Johnny. "That’d be awesome."

Speaking to Official Charts about his admiration of the Aussie trio last year, Louis said: "I loved DMA’s last album THE GLOW, which Stuart Price produced. That has dance elements in it but was done in a really authentic way.

"It doesn’t feel remotely contrived or like a f**king made-for-radio pop-dance hybrid. That was really food for thought for me throughout the process.

"They’re amazing. I’ve been lucky enough to meet them a few times. Johnny [Took] came to one of my shows in Australia. They’re just really f**king lovely lads, great blokes. They’re an amazing live band."
