out of nothing more then curiosity, thoughts on jinjae?

i would like to preface this with a disclaimer that i do actually, despite what it might seem, have non-shitpost thoughts about jinjae (touched briefly on their respective relationships with personhood & how their evolving partnership reflects that here, not enough imo but id only been reading for a couple of months at that point so i couldn't speak about shj with an appropriate level of confidence and we only have so much time on this forsaken earth anyways). especially since shj exists as a foil of sorts to yoojin (re:self-love vs "externalized" love, learning to love oneself through the "other", so on and so forth), with their character developments complimenting the other's in return, jinjae occupies a uhhh. lot of my brain all the time and i need to scream and possibly cry about them. unfortunately it is funnier to post about gay divorce.

yes!!! it's me!!! i'm ryomina fan (one of many)!!! thank you for visiting my askbox, i'll do my best to answer all of the questions because it always makes me happy to see that ryomina sparks joy for people! :D

...this got really long because i like linking to things, so i'm putting it under a read more (IM VERY NORMAL ABOUT THEM)

how did i get into it? i got into persona 3 around august 2021 through the movies- at the time my only experience with the persona series was with P5R / P5S / P5D. p3 was the one that interested me the most (i thought minato was very pretty + i caught wind that the themes of the game were very resonant with people). i picked the movies over the game because i'm a guy who plays games at a snails pace, haha.

admittedly, i did latch onto ryomina because of the scenes in the third and fourth movie (i have mentioned in the tags of this art i drew how much i felt like i was exploding and blasting off to the moon watching it).

but what really dug me into the ryomina hole (and what has kept me there) was thinking about how much ryoji encapsulates the themes of p3- and how interconnected his fate is with minato. i wrote some musings about their dynamic here, if you're interested!

tl;dr: what if we were both boys and we were mirror images of each other and i inherited your kindness and looks but god doomed our narrative even though we're soulmates

on ryomina fanworks recommendations:

regarding fics: i'm going to assume that you've probably read the fics that have the highest kudo ratings on them, so i won't really be listing those.

a personal favorite fic that i always hold close to my heart is Eurydice's Vow by crescentmoontea, which explores the idea of ryomina in p5r's third semester. this was the first fic i read about ryomina and it made me tear up lots...

i also think a lot about I Alone Await You by Nail_gun, literally scrumptious writing that captures the ryomina dynamic so so well. actually check out Nail_gun's other ryomina fics while you're at it too!

other fun fic i'm fond of: can't get my mind out of those memories (what were they?) by foxmulder_whereartthou. ryoji being homeless lives rent free in my head and it's all because of this fic. there's a bunch of other fun ryominas from the same author too (i still need to read them)

BkZa555 also has some fun AU scenarios if you're into that too, notably with Zagreus (P5-Setting, Ryoji focus) and The Definition of Insanity (TIME LOOP fuckery!), but they're currently ongoing.

these were some ones that came to my mind first- as i have the strongest recollection reading them. admittedly i haven't really been reading fic this year, so i don't have many recommendations from fic that came out this year. but if you're so inclined to let ryomina consume your soul, i definitely recommend giving the newer works in the ryomina tag a look-see and see if it strikes your fancy!

as a side note, i do have a few ryomina fics that i've bookmarked on my ao3 here, though i have to say that i'm not sure how well they hold up in terms of like... what i would seek out of a fic these days. but they made past me happy so i bookmarked them, LOL. it's kind of outdated (my collection of fic recs has my old username *disintegrates*).

regarding doujinshi: i have not read all the ryomina doujinshi available, but as a starting point, please take a look at this list from pandora-scans from livejournal!

notably, this is where you can find the strawberry-chan say good bye doujin- which features a small and cute comic from shuji sogabe (the p3/p4 manga artist), as well as other artists. the existence of this doujinshi is the funniest thing to me because it's like "HEY if you're wondering what the volume 8 cover is really gay it's because sogabe contributed to a ryomina doujin." this fact makes my head spin (positive). it explains a lot about the manga.

regarding persona side material:

i know you didn't ask for these but i thought that i mine as well list these too, since i feel that the side materials have some fun expansions on ryoji and minato's interactions. i haven't... watched/read all of these but, hey, i like to share these things!

for comic anthologies for the persona series (some of which have ryoji!). if you're interested in reading them, here's a scanlation index from maboroshi-no on tumblr. i don't think this is a comprehensive list, but i think it will be a great starting point!

poppy and ian's dynamic is so compelling, but not in an 'i ship them ' kind of way. they're coded romantically (always being compared to a couple going through a divorce, king and queen, paralleled to doc and beans + dana and rachel, both actual couples) but i also can't see them becoming a couple nor do i want them to. on one level i do think they're sort of soulmates, not in a 'fated to be together' way but more of a ' the way we developed as people throughout our respective childhoods, and then the way we grew together has resulted in us being the only two people who fully understand each other best and mean the most to one another' (the good place soulmates aren't found they're made etc). they're not in a romantic relationship but theyre clearly the most important person in the world to one another which is so refreshing in that it's so rare to see that outside of a romance. they're insane and they hurt each other all the time and yet they remain emotional core of the show. im sure there's some people who ship them but they're already so entertaining to watch have such a unique dynamic that i can't imagine wanting anything more out of their relationship than is already onscreen. i love them so much.

the MV thing just reminds me of the undeniable chemistry pete and patrick have like the way they bounce off each other so well in interviews or PR stuff a great example being the UK Foods video or just the way they talk about their dynamic or just each other in a way where your like damn what would either of you do without the other. im particularly thinking about the multiple times pete mentions them sharing a bus during tourdust like just in that causal way someone that's really important to you gets brought up a lot. I feel like they have the type of dynamic where if only one of them goes somewhere with people they mutually know they get asked where the other is

It is so very true. Their chemistry is insane. I think it's just part of their creative-soulmate-ness, like, they just play off each other well. Even when they're NOT playing off each other well, they're so obviously delighted with each other that it's still charming, like in many of the Riffs with Patrick, where they're just kind of quizzically grinning at each other while having pointless conversations BUT IT'S STILL CHARMING.

As ever I think of the way Elliott talked about their dynamic, that Patrick just understands Pete better than anyone else. And we know that, actually, they're different enough that they're endlessly bemused by each other, but Elliott translating that as deep understanding just illustrates the depth of that connection, that to other people it's impossible to imagine them unlinked.

not to go insane but Kanata Kara/From Far Away is probably the best isekai I've ever seen?? I grew up on it as a wee child and I gotta say. most of the ones that are being pumped out nowadays really don't compare

every other isekai i read is like. oop im getting engaged to the prince/duke/military leader/priest and now im gonna rule the country with all my fantastic riches

while the protag of FFA just bounces between capitols hanging out with her influential friends. Yeah, she rescued what would be considered the ruling royalty and befriended his family, but they're classified as a support system. She's considered a person with influence eventually, but it explicitly states its only behind the scenes, and all she does with this influence is goes on a roadtrip with her boyfriend/husband/soulmate/sopping wet beast of a man

not to mention in most isekai the whole trope is "i have a talent that's useless back home, but here I have An Ability" whether that be like, knowledge of the future, an actual superpower, being obsessed with a particular Thing, etc etc

My 5k word essay on why I like bringing pain and suffering to the two idiots I love dearly (A thesis)

[alternative title being: me ranting abt jipunk for 2 hours straight im kiddingg]

So like

At this point I'm pretty sure most people can tell I enjoy pulling angst out of nowhere for absolutely NO reason necessary other than pain heeheehaahaa well it ain't gonna stop 😁 CAUSE TRUST THAT I will make sure every au I ever make of these two end in numbingly tragic angst one way or the other 🦅 jkjk they won't all be that bad it'll just have varying degrees of sadness

Anyways

I actually do have a reason for never giving them a happy (canonical or implied) happy ending ☝️ the thing abt me is every detail or like choice I make in character design/relationship/etc is that it's always intentional (most of the time) like there's always some kind of corny reason behind it bc I'm jwndkwjd insane and just think too hard abt two characters that don't even exist.

So like so like

I am an absolute loser for tropes like 'in another life' or 'in every life' or just anything among those lines. Like genuinely it does smth irreparable to my brain it's not even funny.

And basically the thought process for jipunk was like they're LITERALLY from different universes which quite literally means they can't end up together bc it's just not possible. But tbh the whole multiverse logic and how it works is up to interpretation cause y'know it's just a movie but personally I see it as smth pretty impossible for lore sake and stuff HAHSHA

So because the 'original' jipunk (atsv versions) can't end up together, I decided to go and think

"HMM."

"WHAT IF THEY ARE THE EPITOME OF 'ill find you in every universe" BUT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM END IN THE SAME WAY (never ending up tgt)"

Cause for the different au's each of them is technically a different reincarnate in different worlds with different lives.

And like going back to when I said varying levels of sadness: what I meant was in some aus they'll be literally universes apart (which in itself is already sad asf) but in other aus they could live in the same world but their lives are like perpendicular lines because they'll meet and then never cross paths again (BECAUSE this is what their fate is supposed to be if we base it off their atsv counter parts: they were never meant to be bc they're from different universes)

rant incoming im so sorry

Double Life desertduo makes me genuinely insane, these guys are the most selfish individuals this server has to offer

Also their opposite attitude is making me spin, Grian acting like a teenage girl just to get this one person, his chosen special little guy to notice him, to leave his soulmate, to go with HIM and Scar not caring about anyone really. Not about finding his soulbound. Not about the fact he's burning bridges with majority of people he stumbles upon. Not caring that he's bringing more and more conflict upon himself. They're not thinking of each other as two parts of a complete piece. I feel like they consider sharing a life together a less integral part of themselves than people like Scott and Pearl.

The times of Grian feeling attachment on a level further than just sharing a health bar are over, the times when Grian would help Scar retrieve his captured animals are over but.. it's not like Scar finds it in himself to care because he, doesn't really actually.

The one thing that I'm sure of however is that the cake is a lie.
