Sometimes I can sit down and actually get shit done. Sometimes I can attempt that realism bit. And then I get too tired of blending, so whatever the fuck this is happens, and I'll just accept it. Close ups under cut.

Gortash acting as an enabler for The Dark Urge is so interesting imo. I can easily see redeemed DU feeling extremely betrayed and angry by it given that they now have a chance to contemplate their past self’s situation. They easily could accuse him like “you say you were my ‘nearest and dearest’ but you never saw how much I suffered? Or did you just not care because my misery advanced your (our) goals? You never wanted to help me? You could have stopped me.” At this point in the story, DU’s come to understand friendship in a way his past self never could have and Gortash’s previous inaction is a betrayal of those values. If he never helped them, then Gortash never truly saw the real them nor understood them.
In my personal headcanon (and somewhat supported by canon imo), I think Gortash tried to helped DU in his own “Gort” way. Aka promising that they’d one day rule as “Gods” which is essentially a promise to DU that they’ll rise above Bhaal or be free of his influence (as others have previously pointed out). However, I don’t believe Gortash has the emotional capacity to help DU in the way they needed. He doesn’t understand it or he might even be afraid to hit that particular nerve. He liked the routine they fell into, so why change it? It is also definitely pragmatic. The Dark Urge’s condition advances their plans. Gortash puts progress and the plan above all else even if it hurts loved ones. He rationalizes his inaction with cold logic, weighing the pros and cons of his intervention. Therefore, I don’t believe it’s necessarily malicious enabling. Gortash acts with the idea of pursuing whatever is more “comfortable” for him personally and their joint plan.
From my personal experience, this type of enabling is pretty common (at least in my irl situations). They don’t know how to act and are afraid to confront their loved one, so they do nothing. It’s “easier” to do nothing. Definitely would like to write something for it at some point because I feel like this would be a key tension point in their post-tadpole relationship (or lack of). Maybe even pre-tadpole where the Dark Urge just quietly endured but desperately hoped Enver would say or do something to save them, but he never did.

Do you think Gortash would ever willingly commit cannibalism if it was via food Durge made for him? Assuming either that Durge told him what was in it or he figured it out before eating it
tbh yeah i think he would, he's just as much a freak as durge 🙏 not to mention who knows what they feed to slaves in the house of hope. i mean it's Hell man, they either throw them scraps or live vermin or body parts.
plus he trusts durge with his life, committing cannibalism won't kill him and it will make his murder bf happy. they can feed each other human meat and kiss afterwards all bloody methinks

There are many brilliant ideas about Gortash and Durge. I would like to point some out below. Not all are mine.
HEADCANONS -
!! Some bulletpoints were taken from sources, from Gortash Fanficition. I have highlight the ones I know I got from fanfiction, I’ve linked all original source posts !! READ PLS !!
!! I do not want to be a plagiarist! if it's your fanfic, pls let me know if it makes you uncomfortable and I will remove it !!
*Orange means it's canon
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
The way Durge and Gortash know their doom is inevitable, but it was nice while it lasted trope.
<3
Durge’s Prayers to Bhaal for forgiveness: Every time durgetash do the nasty, Durge whispers little prayer of forgiveness to their god.
<3 found reference!
Durge is the “good child” out of Bhaal’s children. Which means they have an image to keep up, and keep up with Bhaal’s plans. They’re under constant stress and fear from their father. Treating him like a father and God gets tough.
<3
Gale’s line “with you, I forget my goddess” I love the idea of applying that to Durgetash: “You scare me. You make me feel like an individual, not like the spawn I am destined to be. I should not see you as an equal or take your companionship. But when I’m with you, I forget my god.” Something along those lines.
<3 found reference!
Durge is a fierce maniac but in no way competitive. I think there’s a laziness Durge and Gortash share. Unkempt. Uninterested in competition. Gortash just makes them an employee instead of killing them.
I love the idea Ketheric is just done with their bs. They’re two reasonable individuals but little giggly school girls in love at a catholic boarding house.
This headcanon is shared across Durge lovers! I will add one example but it is not unknown across the community!
<3 example!
Durge has personality. Scared to lose the rest of themself but scared to indulge when they’re with Enver. On one hand- handsome tyrant who wants to rules the world with them and peepaw. The other- fulfilling the worlds suffering for their father. Do they want either outcome. Durge’s neutral is to feel bittersweet or somber. (Or carnal damning lust)
When Durge has all those holes poked in their brain, and they’re with their travelling companions. They get nauseous after battle, they gotta sit down for a few. Sickened with themselves, or, feeling too much lust at once. Gale doesn’t ask why they need a rest, his knees need a break.
Durge has unusually soft spots on their skin. Made from Bhaal’s balls. Or from Bhaal’s inner arms, like the inner bicep or forearm. Soft and plush, possibly looser, where the skin is tougher. “He made me in his own image” fucked up kinda stuff.
Durge doesn’t harm Gortash. “When I like something I keep it good condition, I cherish it, I hone it, I keep it polished”
Durge is a clean person. Sloppy perhaps but their room is made up of minimalist decorations. A bookshelf and a small desk. They sleep on the softest fluffiest bed, anything to try and sleep as an insomniac. Bottles of empty angelic sleeping potions around the bed and on the side tables. They make their room up themselves. Some part of them wished they could share as much personality as their room does, so openly.
Durge has a hobby. Only hinted to those who are close. Cooking, cleaning, knitting, whatever you like. But it’s not something they share so much. They might comment on the poor stitching quality at Carmen’s Garms. Or how the fishermen on the docks will lie about the cod being sea bass, only a real cook would know.
Durge did/does temple services. I think they said that in the game. Lead everything. But also the Bhaalists are LAZY AS FUCK. And the Bhaalspawn spends hours cleaning the alter and other parts of the temple. The blood and guts and possible diseases?? Bhaalists def die off from blood diseases.
Being a Bhaalist means that it’s about the number of kills and the suffering of their victims, something Sarevok prefaced in game. Durge takes a different stance, placebo-ing themselves so they only kill a small number to last for awhile without blacking out and losing control. Like “I killed them in a manner I haven’t before- I’ll take satisfaction in their unique death more than usual”- spiraling and trying to make up for their guilt. OCD behavior.
Sarevok and Durge are toxic besties. Sarevok hates Durge but Durge comes back bc they’re lonely and need friends to relate to. Until Gortash.
Durge takes a liking to the Intellect Devourers before their fall- that special one named “Us”. Their brief interaction on the Nautiloid Ship when they lose their memories, Us was something they felt connected to. Adored it like a puppy. They feel a sense of incredible loss when they wake up on the beach without Us. But why? It’s a nasty brain with scaly claws, they shouldn’t feel sad.

NO BECAUSE I NEED TO TALK ABOUT ASCENDED ASTARION FOR A SECOND
I feel a lot of people think he just lost his soul when he went through with the ascension (myself included) but replaying for the third time (this time w/o rushing lol), it’s more obvious that he’s still him.
Of course, there’s a very obvious difference between spawn astarion and ascendant astarion in his dialogue, especially if you romance him. Ascendant astarion, in the state that he is immediately after ascension, is absolutely not a healthy representation of what a relationship should look like and should not be desired. Obviously some people think he’s hot but for the sake of the argument just go along w me here.
Regardless I don’t think the ascension changed him THAT much as a person. In fact I’d argue that NOT ascending changes him more (for the better). Ascending just made parts of him (the less forgiving traits) that much more prominent.
Looking back on Act 1 during the tiefling celebration (assuming you don’t side w the goblins), he clearly says he doesn’t revel in being a hero. And throughout the game he makes it very clear he’s willing to be selfish because he hasn’t been allowed to be selfish for the past 200 years.
And this selfishness manifests into him wanting power so he won’t face the same environment again. He’s always wanted power, and if he chooses not to ascend, he’s letting go of that part of himself. Not only does he go against what he’s believed for most of his life as a spawn, but accepts that being a spawn is okay with him. If he chooses to ascend, he’s amplifying that power hungry aspect of himself, putting act1/2 astarion’s personality in the basement, but he’s still there.
This applies to how possessive he is of Tav after the ascension too. He’s always been possessive, even if he doesn’t make it alarmingly obvious. Though rather than possessive I’d describe it more as a fear of being abandoned in act 1/2.
For example, when you drop the Githyanki Crèche on him he gets genuinely annoyed for a few seconds and then he thanks you for apologizing in a much softer tone, like he’s trying to repair any damage he might’ve done by getting mad at you. At the time, he still thinks of himself as weak, and therefore cannot bring himself to be possessive since he has no power to back it up. Instead, he manifests these feelings by doing everything in his power to please you even if it goes against his emotions. And while he doesn’t particularly love Tav going off with other people (as seen with the dialogue after you sleep with Mizora), he pretends that he’s okay with it just to keep you by his side. This tendency to please Tav in hopes they’ll stay is also seen in how he asks for your permission before he kills the Gur at the hag’s house.
Now, once he does ascend, he realizes he has the power to support all these darker emotions he feels. It turns twisted as a result, bringing us to the ascendant astarion we have today.
Spawn astarion, however, lets go of these emotions in a way, or displays them in a more healthy manner. It’s why his arc feels much more satisfying this way because ascendant astarion isn’t really changing, just adjusting. Spawn astarion goes through more raw character development which is also why I cannot bring myself to ascend him even in my evil durge play through!!
anyway yeah I made this account to do stuff like this hope you enjoyed my little rant🫶 this is just my personal opinion obviously but pls lmk if anyone thinks differently bg3 lore is so interesting

As I was just shopping I was reminded of the greatest nanny that is Sceleritas Fell. And the shit he said about 'doing the dishes'. For those that don't know, he just fucking smashes the dishes and scatters them around.
But this sparked another question, to which there are three answers I can come up with; how the fuck did Durge and Scel handle the dishes?
Do they just buy new ones everytime they run out? Singlehandedly securing the pottery business in the Gate?
Do they just don't bother with dishes anymore? Eating that dwarf leg like it's a drumstick?
How does Durge eat soup or smth? Do they just don't or do they have one kettle Scel just can't smash? Default Durge is a Dragonborn with icebreath, do they just deep freeze all their food? Soupcicle? The stew is (a) stewcicle?
Honestly atp I would do anything for an interview with my boy Sceleritas. Even my life. Which is probably the price I'd need to pay anyway. Huge fan btw keep up the wretched work.

remember the datamined "Minthara breaks up with Durge if they reject Bhaal" dialogue?
Tumblr media
it used to have the "IMPOSSIBLE" tag aka unreachable in game.
Tumblr media
it doesn't anymore as of Patch 6... (also one of the flags changed?) So, it's possible that it could be in game... 😬
Tumblr media
Yeah... Being rejected by two gods, then condemning your lover for... rejecting god...? I get the drow practicality of hoarding as much power possible but... She isn't even mad when Tav/Durge destroy the Netherbrain - something that could help them tremendously if they plan to take over Baldur's Gate 😬
This dialogue's supposed to trigger after Durge reject Bhaal. If any of you brought Minthara to the fight and make that decision, pls lmk if this works or not ty <3

I need more people to discuss the fact that Gortash and The Dark Urge created an entire “super-duper secret BFFs 5ever” code/language just for their communications. And that Gortash later hid these letters at his fucking parent’s place, acting like an embarrassed kid covering up his old love poems about his first crush or something. They are so goofy for one another, bro.

do you have any more general hcs on regressed Gortash and Durge? you’ve put the thought in my brain and just YES YES YES 🙏🙏🙏
absolutely, i love thinking about them 🙏
- Gortash either regresses to his 4-5 year old self or a baby
- When he's a bit older, his absolutely favourite thing to do is play with toys. He'll often gather clocks and pens from all over the house and put them together, pry them open, pull them apart, make hideous little toys and play pretend with them. Durge thinks it's cute but he's also breaking a ton of expensive stuff so he has to lock him in a playpen with normal toys like stuffed animals and wooden figurines.
- A reflection of his own past, but he's just so quiet as a kid. He's learned to exist without bothering anyone, so he's super slippery and Durge has to lock doors or he'll find him out in the garden terrorising the plants and throwing rocks at stuff (and people).
- Similarly, he's not too fussy about food. He'll eat anything off his plate because his brain is still in survival-mode, so Durge pushes the most veggies he can on him and all he gets is the occasional annoyed sigh.
- Durge steals a stuffed bear from his childhood home and when he's little, Gortash does. not. separate from it. He takes it everywhere, dragging it behind him, feeding it, playing with it, bathing with it and will not sleep unless he's hugging it. He doesn't have a name for it, just calls it "Bear".
- That said, Durge did have to take it away from him one time when he found him reenacting a scene where Bear broke something and little Gort played the upset mother who was beating the poor thing senselessly with a shoe. He had to give him a very awkward talk afterwards about how it's okay to break things because you get to fix them.
- Gortash likes to draw on the walls. He especially likes taking baths in the fireplace's charcoal and leaving handprints all over the walls and carpets (Bane is so proud <3)
- One time Durge didn't realise he was little until Gortash had accidentally scratched himself with his gauntlet and cried so hard. Durge had to shush him while cleaning up the scratch.
- Durge will explain human anatomy to him as a fucked up bedtime story.
- Going full baby doesn't happen often, only when things are getting waayy too bad mentally for him. When it does happen, Durge is extra careful with him, holding him close and bouncing him, feeding him his bottle of warm milk, tucking him in with Bear and praying to Bhaal he sleeps more than 15 minutes.
- It's a little heartwarming for Durge to watch how innocent and playful Gortash is when he's regressed. It's like the years of labor and hard work disappear from his eyes and he can smile genuinely again.
- He takes him camping sometimes, out in the garden. Teaches him about constellations while they're both laying in the grass, stargazing, and has to stop him from eating dirt multiple times.
- Banites find it so funny to teach little Gortash to recite Bane's gospel, it drives Durge nuts. Imagine a little 5 year old going around talking about the undeniable grasp of unity and prosperity under the leadership of a strong-willed black hand.

id love to know more about any backstory u've been spinning for ur tav ! i love their design sm
Thank you! I’ve been holding off thinking about a backstory proper until I finish the game bc I know Vaguely that the dark urge gets into some plot shit and I like the prompt at the beginning of the game that tells durge they have no memories of their past…that being said, one headcanon I have is that Whatever her guardian is (no spoilers pls I have no idea yet!) they took the shape of one of her parents to try and make her trust them, even if she just has like, the shadow of a recollection on who her parents were or what they looked like.
It makes role playing the scenes with the guardian very tense and conflicting bc Brigha does Not trust them but she can’t bring herself to do anything but be wary of them and try to keep her distance even though there is something strangely familiar and comforting about them. canon events may render this headcanon null but I think it's juicy larian don't shatter my dreams
(another small thing is that the choker/amulet I keep drawing her in feels very important to her and is probably a family heirloom - she never takes it off. Maybe I’ll land on a proper design for it lol)
