See the last thing I could ever do is Commit Crime that’s not like the Pettiest of Petty Theft (think taking a gemstone out of a candle. Not even the full candle. Just the gemstone from the top layer of wax).
However.
Media that’s about a found family, emphasizing an undefined romance between two or more members of said family, where they all commit Crimes in various levels. That’s my shit man that stuff is so good. Even in media where they ‘go good’, just the fact that they were criminals together… it’s just. It’s really the best ever

Arrrghh. People are finishing up Rebirth and looking up the different localizations, and the inevitable wave of hate for the English version is starting to gain traction again just like with Remake. I guess I just get super defensive about it because I have worked on large translation projects before, and it's not as straightforward as players seem to think.
It's not like the good ol' days of "This Guy Are Sick." They don't write the JPN script first, and then just send it out for translation anymore. Nowadays the different language scripts are all written simultaneously, with the teams working back and forth together, to check over each ofher's work and make sure that no one sentence is under- or overshooting a goal. Like it or not— everything is checked over and approved.
There's a lot more being translated than just words. There's so much to take into account— tone of voice, the cultural context, the lip sync and corresponding length of each line (which isn't allowed to run over by more than 0.2 seconds which is CRAZY). It's a messy process and it's a lot of goddamn work.
And then there's the audience, too. Different languages' audiences are often going to have wildly different interpretations of a character. A really good example from FFVII would be Yuffie. In the JPN version of the OG, Yuffie is written to be a confident girl who's dead serious about her ninja training. The ENG translation didn't do that justice... she instead comes off as a silly annoying kid pretending to be a ninja. Remake's DLC was testing the waters to see if they could write Yuffie in a way that's still faithful to both of the strikingly different regional perceptions of her character. And they nailed it.
The same thing happened with Cloud, and continues to influence the way he's written in the Re-trilogy. It's much more subtle than with Yuffie, but it's still noticeable, and I think it's why a lot of people get up in arms about his dialogue.
Cloud has always been written as having a stark disconnect between his tone of voice and his choice of words. It's just that the two major languages get it swapped! JPN Cloud has a harsh, mean tone, but his choice of words is polite and easygoing. On the other hand, ENG Cloud says a LOT of nasty shit out loud, but his true feelings are betrayed by his soft voice and gentle body language.
The difference goes unnoticed by the average player who isn't so invested to give a damn. But if you're actively searching for "bad translations" to get mad at, then you'll find them where one version's Cloud comes off a bit too strong. It's only natural that English Cloud is the one that pisses people off more often— after all, he's literally saying stupid shit to to piss other characters off constantly. His character is so convincing that players want to reach into their screens and wring his neck, and I think that's glorious.
But that's why it upsets me to see people turn that frustration at the localization teams. They didn't "ruin" a character's dialogue— they were just barely able to make something work, all things considered. Character, line length, culture, story context, facial animations, voice acting, for MULTIPLE languages, like... holy shit. It's a miracle that most of it is really really good, and that the bad is only a little bit bad.
Idk where this rant is going. Just... c'mon people. Have some respect for such an insanely complicated art form.

Sailor Stars episode 200 was written with a different ending. Part 1
I was surprised when I started reading the script how parts of the ending was changed. Let me know your thoughts on what version you like better!
Side note. I am paraphrasing.
Page 4. On this page, Chibi Chibi is referred to as Cosmos in parentheses. Makes me wonder if they tried to plan a little more than just the silhouette.
Tumblr media
Page 17. This is where Sailor Moon defeats Galaxia. It mentions how the starseeds are returned and they shoot off of into the night. The entire scene of Galaxia and Sailor Moon speaking while they are both naked wondering what what happened to Chaos did not exist.
One of the starseeds materializes into Endymion. He calls her name and she calls him Mamo-chan. In the original script, he was the first appear. Not the Sailor Senshi. The anime reversed it.
Tumblr media
Page 18. Usagi still rushes into Mamoru's arms and they hug. He wraps his cape around Usagi. While that is happening the other senshi are returning in this order: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn.
Mars: Usagi!
Mercury: Usagi-chan!
Usagi: Everyone!
Mars rushes forward to hug Usagi and Endymion and the other Inners are right behind her. It is not completely clear, but I believe the Outers hug them as well.
Scene shifts to Princess Kakyuu appearing in front the Starlights.
Tumblr media
Page 19. Scene with Kakyuu and Starlights is pretty much the same until the end. Fighter looks up at Usagi and Usagi looks back at Fighter. They smile at each other.
Usagi says, "Thank you Chibi Chibi." This is the first time Chibi Chibi is mentioned in these past few pages. I would assume Chibi Chibi is not present for any of this.
Scene at the end shifts to all the starseeds returning throughout the universe to where they belong. This reads like an amazing scene to have countless shooting stars leaving the Earth to go home.
Tumblr media
Page 20. Continuation of starseed scene. We found Chibi Chibi!
This is rather vague. Chibi Chibi is talking to someone listed as "girl." Going back to the cast page in a previous post, "girl" has "Past Galaxia" listed and no cast name. Is this the freed Galaxia?
Girl/Galaxia is taking to Chibi Chibi about going back home. They discuss how light revived the galaxy but Chaos may come back.
Chibi Chibi talks. She says, it's okay because of Sailor Moon's warm light.
Girl/Galaxia agrees.
The Moon is rising and Chibi Chibi says they should go home.
Girl/Galaxia agrees and thanks Sailor Moon.
They hold hands and go home.
Scene shifts to plane lights in the sky twinkling like stars.
Tumblr media
Page 21. Saying goodbye to the Starlights. WOW. This is very different.
Ami asks Taiki if they are leaving.
Taiki says they are and his friends are waiting for him. They are going to make a new planet.
Ami says "Taiki-san......" (there are a lot of dots)
Taiki said thank you it was really nice to meet her and they shake hands.
Rei and the girls are surprised to see them shaking hands. Rei comments they're holding hands.
Minako says somehow.
Makoto says Ami-chan is doing well.
Ami is embarrassed by this that she is holding his hand and she is still shy she is trying to say something but her voice trails off.
Rei and the group ask, what about us?
Enter Yaten who states he is also really glad to have met everyone.
Rei, Makoto, and Minako... (I think) make googy eyes at Yaten and call him Yaten-kun.
Yaten then thanks Luna and shakes his hand with the cat. (I'm dying over here). I am also assuming he shakes the cat's paw?
Tumblr media
Page 22. Luna's response and Artemis are pretty much the same here.
Makoto says, wait a minute.
Rei comments, passing on all these cute girls/maidens.
Minako: Say hello to the cat?
Yaten and Luna laugh.
Seiya and Princess Kakyuu are looking up at the sky.
Seiya comments it feels like a long time since they chased Princess Kakyuu to this planet.
Princess Kakyuu speaks out loud wondering what happened to the Light Hope they were searching for.
Seiya says hope is within everyone. He will continue to guide everyone as a shining star and it was something he forgot along the way.
Princess Kakyuu smiles. She never gave up on that Light of Hope until the very end. (She is not clear. Maybe Sailor Moon? Chibi Chibi?)
Tumblr media
Page 23. Usagi calls out to Seiya. Scene is very similar to the anime.
Seiya turns around to see Usagi standing there with Mamoru. He tells her, he is glad she has her boyfriend back.
Usagi says it is thanks to him being here and she working hard.
Seiya says Odango. The two stare at each other.
Seiya says he will never forget her.
Usagi still says they're be friends forever. (poor Seiya)
Minako and Makoto laugh. Ami and Princess Kakyuu turn red. Rei and Mamoru look baffled.
Girls make fun of Usagi for not understanding.
Tumblr media
Page 24. Rei makes fun of Usagi for not understanding what Seiya means.
Princess Kakyuu says its time to return to their planet.
Seiya whispers in Mamoru's ear as he passes by, he has to protect her from now on.
Mamoru says he will and will make Seiya happy.
Seiya laughs and comments you say that. He turns around and says goodbye Odango.
They turn into the Starlights and say goodbye, same as the anime.
Tumblr media
Final pages in the next post tomorrow. Couldn't fit it all in one.

digital media i watched this year that i really really enjoyed: a (non-exhaustive, non-ranked) list
hi everyone! ray keys here. i'm writing this on Dec 21st because I know I'll forget to post this on time if I don't schedule it beforehand.
i don't watch things on streaming services because i don't have any of the apps downloaded on my phone and most shows just aren't my thing anyways (ATLA has been the only exception) so all of the links here go to YouTube or other (free) sites
here we go!
Misc. Series and Standalone Videos
17776
17776 is a multimedia webnovel (?) about American football in the year of, you guessed it, 17776, written in 2017 by Jon Bois. It's told through the communications of three space probes made by humans and it's genuinely comforting as someone who's generally terrified by the concepts of eternity and immortality. Trigger warning for unreality at the start.

20020 (the sequel, written in 2020 by the same author)
Code MENT
Code MENT is a YouTube series made by PurpleEyesWTF, of which the first episode was released in 2010. It's a fan-made abridgMENT of the anime Code Geass, voiced entirely by one guy (or at least i think so), and some parts of it have become legendary (see: Soup Store). Trigger warning for murder, infrequent use of the R slur, and depictions of blood and gore.

Star Wars The Third Gathers: Backstroke of the West
Star Wars the Third Gathers: Backstroke of the West, uploaded to YouTube by GratefulDeadpool in 2017, is a video where somebody put the entire script of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in Google Translate, translated it to Chinese then back to English, and dubbed over it. Yes, it's the entire movie. No, it somehow hasn't been taken down yet.

Mianite (S1)
At least some of you should be familiar with Mianite, seeing as how it has taken over my entire blog over the past month or so. The World of Mianite is a vanilla Minecraft SMP launched in 2014. It was streamed live, but the recordings of those livestreams were later uploaded to YouTube. The main members of the serverlist are CaptainSparklez, II_JERIICHO_II, SynHD, and OmgItsFirefoxx. Mianite has had three seasons so far, but I've only watched the first from one perspective so that's what you guys are going to get.

Alan Becker (and his Team)'s Work
Hi! This channel gets a special section all to itself because I just finished the Animation vs Minecraft series and I'm pretty sure my life has been irreversibly changed forever.
Animator Vs Animation
Animator Vs Animation (shortened: AVA or AvA) is an animated YouTube series by Alan Becker. The first episode was originally posted in 2006 and was later reuploaded to the platform in 2018. I recently binged the entire thing and was NOT expecting it to be as fucking incredible as it was. This is the de facto best place to start if you want to jump into Alan's other works featuring these characters, which I highly recommend because all of them are fantastic!

Animation Vs Minecraft
The stick men play the block game. Do not read the comments of any of the episodes until you have finished the entire series. Do not go in with any prior knowledge if you're able to. Set yourself up with a bowl of popcorn and a big ol' glass of ice water, sit back, look really closely for continuity because it is there and it is GLORIOUS, and enjoy.

Levi's Object
The House of Lamentation (8)
MC: I am going to have to return to the human world soon, but before I go, I would like an object from each of you that I can take with me and use to summon you.
General Content Warning: hinted praise kink, implied double dick action
I'm torn. Like, seriously torn.
I have the perfect thing to give to MC, but I don't know if I want to part with it. It might just be the most valuable item in my collection, and it's one-of-a-kind, so it's not like I can buy another one off the internet or something.
Should I? Do I? Won't I? Can't I?
When MC enters my room, I make a split-second decision and give them my gift. Well, more like I shoved it at them, but same difference. They look contemplatively at it before setting it down gently.
"You're struggling to part with this, aren't you?" they ask.
"Yes. I know it's just a script from a school play, but--"
"--it was written and autographed by your favorite author. I understand completely." They pause, a smile forming on their lips. "I will be right back." Before I can stop them, they open my door and leave my room.
My insecurities cause me to start spiraling. What if they think it's stupid? What if they're laughing at me? What if they're telling Simeon, and--
Enough.
That's strange. I've never heard that voice before. It sounds like me, but a lot more confident.
They wouldn't do that to you. They have accepted you for who you are. If they didn't like you, they wouldn't listen patiently to you as you ramble on about your interests. Furthermore, they wouldn't actively learn more about you so that they can better engage with you. They are your Henry. They would never betray you.
"Everything alright?" MC's back. "You didn't think I was running away, were you?"
"M-maybe," I nervously admit.
"I apologize. I should have told you where I was going. You see, I still had my copy of the script for With Me, and I had Simeon sign it as well." Oh. Oh my Lord. They're seriously giving me their copy of the script?!
"I left a little message for you as well," they state as they hand the script to me. Flipping to the very last page reveals their note.

(Transcription: To my Lord of Shadow, I have enjoyed the many adventures we have gone on together, and I hope to go on many more with you. Here's to our relationship. May it continue to blossom and flourish. Your Henry)
The next thing I know, I throw my arms around MC and bring them close to me. The fact that they went through the trouble of doing that...no one has ever been so thoughtful towards me before.
"It's okay, Levi." Shit. Have I been crying? Wouldn't surprise me, honestly. I tend to do that when I fan-boy a bit too hard. MC proceeds to gently kiss me on the cheek, and I momentarily freeze.
"You're not playing fair, doing something like that." The words tumble out of my mouth before I can stop myself from saying them.
"All's fair in love and war." What to do? This is usually the part in romantic anime when the main character kisses the love interest, but do I have the confidence to do such a thing?
I didn't use to. I would have ruined the moment somehow, because in the back of my mind, I thought I didn't deserve to do such things. I was my worst saboteur.
But now...
I don't stop myself this time. Instead, I give in to my desires.
I feel MC smile against my lips as I kiss them.
"Good boy," they murmur, sending shivers down my spine. "I'm so proud of you."
Do they know, or did they stumble upon that knowledge accidentally?
The look on their face when we pull away suggests the former. Who told them?
"Surprised?" they ask.
"How...?" I'm too nervous to finish the sentence.
"In some ways, you and I are really similar." Oh. I see. I suppose that makes sense.
"Anyway, there's something I've been meaning to ask you," MC continues.
"Okay..."
"So, I've seen a few pictures of higher level demon forms, where they start looking more like the animal they're representing. You took on a more serpentine form. I was wondering if--"
"Yes." I know they didn't ask their question, but if I'm correct...
"Even in your human form?" I nod my head. I knew it. "How does that work? Like, do you take care of one at a time, or are you doing both simultaneously?"
"Usually one at a time. I don't have enough coordination to do both." Where is this conversation going?
"Would it overwhelm you to do both?"
"I...I don't know."
"Wanna find out?"

After looking into the writers predicament and how it all led to the strike it made me realize that perhaps one of the reasons for the decline in quality media is becuase writers have been given less and less incentives to create good content, do you have any thoughts?
I don't think it would be exactly incentive. I would think in a certain amount of cases it would be down more to demotivation. Generally, writers for film and TV and such genuinely WANT to make a good story and, much like fanfic writers and fanartists, will do their best for very little thanks simply because it's what they DO. But not ever show or movie is going to be a passion project, in fact most of them won't. And if you're working for Disney especially, who owns 38% of all film (not counting TV and other media) so you most likely WILL end up wroking for Disney, you are going to have a TON of studio meddling on every level of writing.
As I mentioned in the other post, Mr Rick And Morty (sorry I don't know his name and I'm too lazy to check) wrote the story for the Dr Strange and the Multiverse of madness at LEAST twice when the movie's FIRST story and script was scrapped by a previous writer. The first script he wrote was heavily rewritten and changed and reworked by the studio. and then the studio just THREW OUT that script and he had write a brand NEW script 2 weeks before shooting started using all the props, sets, outfits and CG segments they had already made. And the thing is this is now STANDARD PRACTICE in working on a big budget Disney film.
Part of the reason the Barbie movie is written as well as it is, is because Mattel were almost completely hands off with the film's writing. (the only changes I heard about was them censoring one Barbie saying the word "Motherfucker" which they censored in the film by putting a Mattel sticker over her mouth) and various other things like the removal of a narration in one scene and one or two jokes were cut. You know! NORMAL screenwriting practices!
But Disney is so paranoid and controlling with literally everything they put out it is a death sentence for any kind of creativity. Even ignoring the fact that they hire brand new writers who they can control and push around easier, I imagine even if you were NOT a new writer just happy for a big break, it must be extremely demotivating to try and write a good story when you know Disney is just gonna shred it to ribbons.
This is absolutely not the ONLY reason of course. Velma's writing is so godawful because people who had only worked in live action cable comedy thought they could do the exact same thing for an animated show and it would work without knowing anything about the medium they were working in because they were arrogant, lacked restraint, and had gotten where they were thanks to being friends with the right people. HGS is so badly written because Raye Rodriquez had shopped around his story idea to EVERYONE and got rejected by all of them until Crunchyroll needed fodder to justify opening up its own studio to create "originals". Many times modern cartoons are badly written because the actual people writing the show are animators who haven't had any formal training or education in creative writing.
There are a thousand and one reasons for WHY something ends up badly written. But as for why we have gotten SO MUCH that is badly written recently I would chalk up to studio execs and the business side of Hollywood choking the creativity out of the writing process in an attempt to maximize profits in the short term.
That's an EXTREME simplification but that would be my opinion. Hell the only reason AI writing is even a conversation regarding film and TV is because it's the kind of thing these studio execs are SALIVATING over the thought of. A writer they have 100% control over that they don't have to pay and don't have to deal with all that "creative vision" or "artistic expression" bullshit which they don't like because it represents risk to sure fire income.
because most Studio Execs are businessmen who have no concept of creativity whatsoever, have no idea what being creative even means, and yet they think because they know how to make money in a corporate sense, they know how to monetise creativity to maximum efficiency.
It's like a fisherman getting rid of all the fish in the sea because they're getting in the way of him monetising the ocean.
Anyway this ask is a mess because this is a complex issue I am trying to express a simplified opinion on. But I hope you get what I mean.

MONTHLY MEDIA: March 2024
……….FILM……….
Tumblr media
Dune: Part Two (2024) Every piece of technology felt and looked so tangible. The baby worm too! Love the tactile nature of this whole production and I hope studios take note that CG can't be the only tool in your belt. So much bigger than I imagined and just enjoyed the whole thing.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) Ages surprisingly well and a script that lets the main quartet be both funny and layered.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
Columbo (1.01 to 1.03) Hey I'm starting Columbo! Love that each episode is feature-length and Columbo appears fully formed right out of the gate. The sets and costumes are all so glamorous and L.A. Very excited to keep going.
Succession (2.05 to 3.04) The Kendall play at the end of season 2 felt very much like the Kendall play at the end of season 1 and while I'm still a huge fan of this series, I just hope it's not the same going into season 3 and 4.
Delicious in Dungeon (Episode 1.09 to 1.13) Great adaptation that isn't just a straight recreation of the artwork in the manga. The more kinetic/frantic moments in the animation are a nice departure and while they don't pop up in each episode, now that I'm 13 eps deep I can appreciate how they're sprinkled throughout.
Love is Blind (Episode 6.02 to 6.13) It still amazes me that anyone goes on reality tv.
……….YOUTUBE……….
Tumblr media
Twilight | ContraPoints by ContraPoints Yes I did watch a nearly 3-hour essay on Twilight, sexual expression, and all that comes with that. And you should too. VIDEO
Tumblr media
Instagram fatigue and the rise of 'Resentment Reels' by Taylor Lorenz While I haven't noticed this specific phenomenon, I have noticed Instagram declining as an app (both as a user trying to see anything other than ads, and a creator trying to get my work seen in between those ads). It's a bummer. VIDEO
Tumblr media
Saltburn: The Tumblr-ification of Cinema by Broey Deschanel Every since I saw Saltburn, I've been thinking about what wasn't quite sitting right with me. This unlocked a lot of what I couldn't describe and most of it stems from the writer/director's upper class upbringing. Saltburn isn't a "take down the rich" movie, it's a horror story from the perspective of a wealthy family. VIDEO
Tumblr media
Why Is It So Hard To Cross The Street? (& What You Can Do To Help) by Strong Towns Accidents where drivers hit a pedestrian are going up in my area so this really hit home. And for those feeling like there's nothing you can do at ground level, consider taking their course (not a paid sponsorship I'm just in real support of community-lead initiatives). VIDEO
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock (Complete) After picking up the last book in this series (which I've yet to read) I figured I'd start at the beginning. Love the fast pace pulpy action and I can see how this influenced the creation of D&D.
The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie (Complete) This one would lose me for stretches but the final quarter of the book is stronger. A lot less cozy and a lot more action than I was expecting but skimming other reviews it sounds like this was written during her more...adventure-focused era. Three books deep and I have to give Christie credit that each has been a completely different experience.
Tumblr media
Adventures of a Japanese Business Man by Jose Domingo (Complete) Always love going back to this nearly wordless epic that follows the titular Japanese business man. I love the complexity of the earliest panels and wish that could carry throughout more of the book, but it's always such a treat to discover just where each new panel will go.
Tumblr media
Delicious in Dungeon Volume 5 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) Enjoying rereading this with shorter breaks between volumes as I certainly missed/forgot details on my first read. It's here that the story and tone shifts from light romp to a more dramatic and dangerous affair but it never loses its spot-on humour. Love those dryad pumpkins.
Ultimate Spider-Man HC Volume 11 by Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen, David Lafuente, and more (Complete) Going from some of my other comics back to this, I'm struck by just how wordy it can get. Now knowing where the story goes, it was a great idea to prime readers to the idea of Peter Parker dying even if it's not from this event.
……….AUDIO……….
Tumblr media
Blank Check with Griffin & David (Podcast) Late to the game on this but really enjoying burning through their back catalog. Obviously started with their episode on Speed Racer as it's a near perfect film that you should watch right now.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Tuesday group just killed a mayor! So the aftermath of that is going to play out over the next couple of sessions. And the Mof1 crew is investigating the aftermath of their own district-wide catastrophe and it's all looking rather suspicious!
Tumblr media
Spot It (Blue Orange Games) I can't recommend this game enough. It's so easy to learn, rounds last maybe 5 minutes, it plays well with small or large groups of any age, and all it requires is pattern recognition and quick reflexes. Every time I've played this someone says they're going to buy a copy for themselves.
And that's it. See you in April!

MAY 14TH, 2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a month of announcements and changes in the original schedule, Kpop Flex began its activities, and you might've seen multiple idols you admired walking around backstage.
The trip to Frankfurt was successful if you excluded the bickering between the self-proclaimed ‘Sunghoon Hate Club’ and Sunghoon himself. Not to mention the exhausting feeling of staying seated for seventeen hours. The journey to the stadium was similarly great, again, if you excluded the fact that the twelve of you did not have time to stop by your hotel.
Rehearsals were fine. ‘Just fine’, you'd say. Enhypen went first and did the mic test, followed by VOON. Finally, after long and unnecessary checkups, you thought you would have the ‘Dope’ cover final rehearsal. However, one of your managers informed you that you would not; the festival's organization expected both groups to keep up the suspense they created.
Partly, you were glad. You thought that if they let you do the dry run for the song, you'd mess up some moves like Enhypen did just for the main setlist. The number of fans starting to pile up inside the stadium made your stomach drop, enhancing your apprehension. Even with almost four years of performing and a world tour recently finished, you still felt the same anxiousness you felt when you debuted.
On other hand, you were disappointed. You wouldn't get the last chance to convince yourself that one week of training was enough time to get the choreography. An overbearing weight was set on your shoulders, particularly due to the official title of main dancer you held.
By that time, you found yourself seated on a leather couch in VOON's assigned dressing room. Every inch of your brain seemed to be torn apart brutally with the seven-hour jetlag. Your outfit itched, your makeup felt heavy on your skin, and the boots you wore squeezed your feet mercilessly. If there was any supernatural force responsible to dictate your life, it hated you.
Bouncing your leg up and down, you knit your eyebrows together in anxiousness. You trapped your bottom lip between your teeth while loud cheers passed through the door as staff members came and went.
You were too immersed in your negative thoughts to notice that seven new people entered the place. A gentle tap on your forearm made you quickly turn your head to a smiley person.
“Hi!” Jungwon chirped, a hand close to his chest waving shortly. He pointed to the free space on the couch as he raised his eyebrows. “Is anyone there?”
“Oh, uh, hi.” You replied in a daze. Looking where he motioned to and shaking your head, you denied, “No, no. You can sit here if you want.”
He obliged, and you scooted to the left to give him more room (though there was enough space for two other people to sit in between you). Your eyes traveled to your members quietly, taking note of other familiar voices.
Sora sat on a makeup chair, fanning herself with her script. A young woman calmly applied a peach blush on her plump cheeks. Sunoo and the black-haired singer chatted while occasionally stealing annoyed glances at Sunghoon. The cut on her head — as Jake said — was minuscule, and healed significantly.
A cameraman filmed Eunjoo showing Heeseung some locking moves, her specialty, as he stared at her with gleeful eyes. You thought the editor would definitely write something along the lines ‘Cool Senior Eunjoo’ or ‘Best Sister’ for the caption. The 02z (including April) watched the two and giggled enthusiastically, stopping whenever the lens focused on them.
Mingyu and Riki were hidden in a corner sharing a pack of chips, and probably gossiping or talking about animes — a thing they developed only when they saw one another in person. The boy caught your gaze and smiled widely.
“Seems like everyone went for people their age.” Jungwon spoke airly from beside you, observing many scenes develop before him and turning to you. “We weren't too invasive, were we?”
“No, no! I think Joo even said something about visiting you all.” For another time, you shook your head, pessimistic feelings about the show still clouding your mind. A camera started recording your interaction, and you almost considered faking a grin.
You took some seconds to admire his clothes and distract yourself. He styled black skinny pants with a pair of boots of the same color. A loose tie and his denim jacket with golden stripes closed the outfit.
“I like your clothes.” You commented truthfully, careful not to overstep the public boundaries your company set up for you. One thing is a bunch of paparazzi and fans seeing you in real life, the other is a video. There's no coming back once the content is released.
It was easy to Jungwon notice how you seemed bothered and tired. Sometimes, his weird ability to read people was enabled, and he got to raise everyone's spirits effortlessly. He thought giving you a motivational speech wouldn't help, so he decided to keep with his cheerful demeanor, hoping it'd rub off on you.
“Thanks. They're pretty cool, aren't they?” He grinned, slightly pulling the edges of his shirt to the front to get a better look at it.
You mumbled an ‘Mhm’ in confirmation, a tad annoyed by the cameras. “If you had a hat you'd look like a modern cowboy.”
He laughed at that, the sight of his dimples greeting you. “A modern cowboy?” His cheeks went up, covering his dark irises. “Well, you're looking like an emo straight from 2010 today.”
“Excuse you?” Gasping dramatically, you rolled your eyes at him. You ignored the object filming you for a while, forcing your concerned musings to tone down. After taking a good look at your attire, you sighed. “Yeah... Now that you said it, I think the chains and those pointy bracelets give it away.”
“At least you look like a cool emo, you are a real rockstar.” He consoled. A dumb idea to cheer you up crossed his mind, making him mimic a professional camera with raised hands. “Let me be your paparazzo. C'mon, quick! Strike a pose!”
Jungwon's playful attitude made you giggle softly. Posing with rock horns and an air guitar, you observed him crouch down to get different angles in his so-called photos.
“Look here, rockstar Y/n!” He lifted an arm, the other still making the form of a camera. “When will your next album be released? Your fans are dying to know!”
“You're asking too much, mister. That's a top-secret info.” You jested, acting like flashes were blinding you, preoccupation long gone. “I can only say that the title track is related to medicine.”
“You're joking,” Jungwon spoke incredulously, raising his head from behind his hands. You nodded to the sides, and he smiled mischievously at that. “You wouldn't mind telling me the real name of the song, would you?”
“Yes, I would.” Chuckling, you slowly pushed his palms down to stop him from clicking his tongue and making camera noises, his eyes squinted. “Joo would kill me, and my managers too.”
He hummed and sat back down on the couch, dissatisfied with your answer. The man that got your jokes on film laughed under his breath and walked away. The scene probably wouldn't be aired due to how close you seemed to be, even though you still didn't know much about each other (or you about Jungwon).
After that, you realized that the presentation might be ready to start at any moment. “What time is it?” You asked.
“Uh– It's twenty past seven.” He checked his phone, turning it to you in the process.
Jungwon's lock screen elicited a small chuckle from you before you could start to overthink again. A picture of a white, unbothered fluffy dog laying on top of a hoodie came into your view.
You moved your gaze to Jungwon in awe. “Is it yours?”
“Hm?” Frowning, he turned his phone back to himself. His confused face soon turned into a gleeful one when he picked up on your question. “Oh, yeah! This is Maeumi. He lives with my parents and sister. They adopted him some months ago, but he already thinks I'm his father or something.”
“He's adorable.” You commented, imitating his expression.
The boy giggled as a way to thank you. “And you have a cat at your dorms? Shoyo, right?”
“Yep, he's Mingyu's cat. She got him when we moved in together.” Your eyes went to your colleague, who was in a surprisingly calm discussion with the other maknae. “He gets all sad when we don't give him enough head pats and attention.”
Maintaining your focus on Mingyu, you asked Jungwon for a favor. “Talking about cats, remember two days ago when we made that video call, and you hypnotized me with your eyes? The Puss In Boots eyes.”
“Yeah... Wait– I didn't do ‘Puss In Boots’ eyes!” He huffed. “I only do that to get what I want!”
“That's– Oh my God, that is literally the same thing, Won!” You harmlessly argued back. “I need you to do it for me. Just one time.”
Yang expected you to wait for his answer, but you were already standing up and making your way through the sea of people. “Y/n, hold up!” He followed you, dodging the staff until he reached the corner of the room. “I didn't agree yet!”
His shouting was of no use. You were already tapping a young man's shoulder, who he recognized as one of your managers.
“Hi, Jihoon-nim!” Mustering your most innocent smile, you bowed slightly to him and Enhypen's manager, Taejin, on his right. “What's up?”
“The festival is up, Y/n.” Jihoon put his clipboard under his arm with a bored face. “What do you need?”
“Oh, yes! I wanna go see IVE for a little. Y'know, catch up with Wonyoung and Hyunseo, things like that.”
Jihoon eyed the confused teen behind you, suspecting your plans. He took a good look at both of you before putting his free hand on his hip. “And why should I let you go?”
“That's your cue!” Whispering indiscreetly, you nudged your friend towards your manager.
At that moment Yang wished he could have teleportation powers to vanish from there; he would be ashamed of his actions forever. But even then, he clasped his palms and did the best pout and ‘Puss In Boots’ eyes he could — for you.
“What are you doing?” Jihoon drew his eyebrows together. The question was mostly to you, and not Jungwon.
“Don't you feel like letting me see IVE? Look at these sparkly, beautiful eyes. Would you let poor Jungwonie down?”
Said ‘Jungwonie’ stopped a smile from appearing on his face, his stomach filling up with fireworks. Did you really think he had sparkly and beautiful eyes? Did you like them or were you just acting? Were his ears pink from your compliment? His imaginative pondering got interrupted hastily by your boss.
“I- Yes. Aren't you the one asking to go see your friends? What does Jungwon have to do with this?” He inquired, not paying mind to Taejin's snort and the boy's pleading gaze.
You were quick to mirror Jungwon's stance, pouting and batting your eyelashes as if you were begging your parents to let you sleep at your friend's house. “Please, Jihoon-nim!”
The manager sighed apologetically. “Sorry, kiddo. They're going up in a bit, but I'll see if you can meet them after the show, alright?”
“Worth the shot,” you shrugged in comprehension. “Thank you anyways. C'mon, Wonie.”
As the red-headed teen waddled close to you, Taejin shook his head in disbelief.
“He must like her a lot.” He pointed out.
“What do you mean by that?” Jihoon puzzled, writing down some reminders on his clipboard.
“Jungwon wouldn't do a skit like that if a random person asked him to.” Taejin clarified. “Even if it was his members asking, I don't think he would do it so easily.”
In understanding, Jihoon nodded.
⠀ ⠀ ✶
“You got this.” You kept repeating that to yourself to give you more confidence, pacing around backstage. IVE was almost finishing their last track, Eleven, meaning that Enhypen would soon begin their performance.
“Are you okay, noona?” Someone rested their hand on your shoulder. You turned to see Ni-Ki examining every single inch of your face with an evident worried look.
“Yeah, I am,” you waved him off bashfully. “Just getting ready for the show. I think the adrenaline is starting to kick in.”
“That's great!” He beamed, adjusting his earpiece while tapping your collarbone lightly with his fingertips. “We're gonna be amazing in our solo, hm? Now let's go with the others.”
Riki's personality was something intriguing. You noticed he was undoubtedly intense and diligent for his age, however, he had his moments of childishness.
Balancing these two sides should be hard for someone who already had so much on their plate — you knew that seeing that you two shared the same group position. You decided to stick with him if he let you, and try to give him a helping hand in the areas you had experience. If you could ease at least a small fraction of the weight he carried, you'd still be proud of yourself and Riki.
He guided you to Jungwon and Eunjoo, the leaders finishing their talk as you two came closer.
“Gather around, guys!” Jungwon spoke loudly, and the other eight came along.
“Second time in the year that we do this with other people.” Jay whistled, putting his hand in the middle of the group.
Sora let a couple of hands pile up on top of Sunghoon's to not touch his. “When was the first again?”
“Legend of K-pop with TXT and the Weverse Con,” Heeseung answered, shooting a glance at Jake because his dirty palm was brushing against his fingers.
April bumped her hip with Sora's. “We saw them at the Weverse Con! We were there too.”
“Ah, yes... I forgot.” The younger girl coughed awkwardly to the side.
“You're going up in one minute!” A staff member yelled.
“So... Does ‘EnVoon fighting’ sounds good?” Jungwon questioned, glancing around to gather the answers.
“Sounds great.”
“Yep!”
“On the count of three?” He chimed again.
“Just do it already!” Sunghoon whined in despair.
“Geez,” Jungwon muttered, the group pushing their hands down. “Okay... 3, 2, 1–“
“EnVoon, fighting!”

My Thoughts on Sonic Prime Season 3 (Spoilers Ahead!) I'm going to structure this in a sandwich style of reviewing, because there's a lot of good, a bit of bad, and a decent chunk of lame shit. Let's hop in, shall we? The Best: Grim Big Let's start this review off with the thing I adored about this season the most: GRIM BIG, BABY!!! Grim Big is the funniest shit ever and I loved every moment he was on screen The Lame: The Grim Bots (Minus Grim Big) The Grim Bots are cool in concept, but they just don't really do anything and have no notable personalities. They're just there as fodder. Alpha Grim Sonic does get a TINY bit of personalization in episode 5, but that is ENTIRELY carried by Shadow challenging him to "prove his worth" and the mild scowl AGS gives in response. Also the Grim Birdies are the most annoying fucking things in existence and I hate their sound effect. Alpha Grim Sonic could NEVER be Chaos Sonic.
The Great: Fight Scenes One of the best aspects of this season was the fight scenes (minus the ones within the Kracken and Mothership) by far. All of them are such a treat to my eyes and I loved every second of it. The Lame: Inconsistencies The writing seems to pingpong in tone a lot. One minute everything is hopeless, and then sonic has a plan. That plan falls apart due to infighting, rinse and repeat. Nine also feels a little inconsistent, as sometimes he's angsty, sometimes he's cocky, and sometimes he's manic. It's pretty jarring. Dread is also inconsistent. He said in either episode 2 or 3 that he had no incentive to fight, and then in episode 4 onwards, he's fighting with enthusiasm. He really only gets an actual incentive in episode fucking 6, which he abandons IN THE SAME EPISODE.
The Good: Nine While Nine was a bit inconsistent at times, he was still pretty good in this season. I can tell the VA and animators really tried. I just wish he was given a better and less inconsistent script. He gets really good in the final 3 or so episodes.
The Bad: The Retro Scene Just like in other seasons of Prime, the retro scene was pretty bad. But I feel that this season, it felt especially cheap and unnecessary. It looked like a fucking flash animation. Not even dialogue this time. It was pointless too because the entire first season had Sonic reminding Nine of him and Tails' friendship.
The Extra-Enjoyable: Jack, Squad Commander Red, and Renegade Knucks All three of these were great. Some were greater than others (Renegade Knucks was definitely the best by far and was the one of the only characters I can definitively say I cared about. Like, Renegade absolutely STOLE the show.) I enjoyed watching them on screen. Again, some more than others (I love you, Renegade Knucks), but all were enjoyable nonetheless. The Thing I'm Undecided About: Sappiness Sonic is a sappy guy. I am more than aware of that. However, I feel a few scenes put too much sappiness for the scene, or used sappiness when it could be used elsewhere. For the sake of being fair, the sappiness in the final episode WAS a good use of it. Overall not my biggest problem with the season. (I ran out of bads so the sandwich style ends here)
The STUNNING: Animation The animation in this season was PHENOMENAL. Multiple times this season, my brain was just in constant awe with how good it looked. Everyone was super expressive and bouncy. Definitely amazing. The Peak: Shadow Shadow was GREAT this season. I loved his interactions almost as much as I loved Renegade Knucks. Definitely the best Shadow has been written in a WHILE. It was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise flanderized character. We got a bit of Shadow in season 2, but this is where I think he really shines. I certainly will not forget the ultimate lifeform beefing with a 9 year old. Peak, honestly The Very Nice: Rusty I feel Rusty had more time to shine this season. She had more lines, her animation was more expressive, and even her voice actress seemed to read her lines with a bit more emotion. I especially liked her monologue against Alpha Grim Amy. Show's still not canon though :)

Can I ask how you learned Japanese? I'm curious about learning it myself but have no clue where to start.
Disclaimer:
I'm self taught (only have one basic class in Japanese) and never took JLPT. I can talk, write and understand basic japanese, but definitely not proficient. Because I only apply my jp knowledge for hobby stuffs (a.k.a i can read a novel about oshi and have conversations with fellow otaku. but none of it is applicable in regular daily life)
I started since 2014 so I've been learning jp for almost 9 years (still am). I dont think I'm qualified to give advice so instead, here's a short essay on how I got to this point;
2014: learnt reading & listening from manga & anime. reading raws while comparing to fan scanlations. same with anime. doing this consistently to get used to the language 2018: peak of my learning -took a basic class in japanese in college. helped a lot in getting used to sentence structure and particles -started translating seriously (short written text only: interviews, tweets, articles) -practice writing and conversing via twitter. started tweeting in japanese and talked to japanese people in same fandom. found kaiwa friends. -also started translating spoken japanese (livestreams), but was not confident enough to translate word-by-word 2019- jan 2021: started translating mobage contents. literally just doing the same things as the year before but more frequently and more quantity. also started translating short spoken japanese without any text/script aid (radio). feb 2021: discovered high&low. met todoroki yosuke. trajectory of life changed. stopped translating for the time being 2022: slowly translating media with real people starting with some kamen rider stuffs. got more comfortable with translating spoken japanese (unscripted). 2023: here i am.
The long essay version:
The earliest I started learning japanese was around ~2014 where I was into a very niche series that has no translation so I had to buy the manga and try to read them myself. At the time there's no translate using image function, so a lot of it was me typing in the words in hiragana and hoping that I find the right kanji. During this period I (was forced to) learn a lot about kanji radicals and how to properly write them.
From that day on, Jisho was my best friend
I learnt mostly by comparing anime/manga fan translations with raws and going back and forth to check the words in dictionary. I prefer fan scanlation bc most of them are literal and are easier to understand as someone who isn't an english speaker.
I still consciously do this whenever I watch anything but I can differentiate what's a literal translation vs localisation now.
I started dabbling in translation around 2018
At the time I was into Hypnosis Mic (rap songs). I was better at understanding jp words now and could write simple words. I would tweet in japanese and reply to my fav artists drawings (this template is my origin). I also started posting my drawings with jp caption
I used to help around the fan translation group with seiyuu interviews or magazine articles (mainly written text). And the admin of the group would check my translation before posting them. I tried translating songs myself, but I realised that while I could translate, they don't make sense 😅😅
I made some friends in the fandom who were also learning japanese and we would consult each other with translations. I also made a friend with a japanese person wanting to learn english. So I would talk to them in japanese while they would reply to me in english.
So I stuck around with translating short interviews/tweets. I also started doing livetweets of niconico livestreams. I wasn't confident enough in spoken japanese so I only made general summaries instead of word-by-word translation.
At the same year I also took an introductory class to Japanese Language at my college. It was my first formal lesson in japanese. The book we used was Minna no Nihongo Elementary 1. The class got me used to sentence structures, particles, numbers, time etc etc. The class did not made me translate my anime stuffs better back then but the present me is very thankful for everything I learnt during this class bc it's what people in the real world use.
The next following years (2019- early 2021) were when i was most active bc I got into translating mobage contents. I translated pretty much everything I could from home screen lines to event stories to radio. I got better at making my translation sound better and not too literal. Also helped proof reading friends translations.
I personally think this was the best learning duration for me. Compared to actors, seiyuu (voice actors) have really clear enunciation which helped me got confident in my listening skills for spoken japanese, thus became confident enough to translate it. I could understand and catch up with what they were talking about with minimal text. But I still need to listen to the same radio show 2-3 times before I could fully understand them.
I dedicated every waking minute of my life to this game until it shut down. Then I got so broken hearted, I didn't want to consume anymore 2D media. Depressi spaghetti phase.
On that fated day in February 2021, I watched High&Low on netflix and I fell for Todoroki Yosuke. Started the process all over again by consuming everything i can about highlow to get used to the actors voices, way of speaking, dialect, common words/phrases etc. Also includes stuffs related to exile tribe. During this time I barely translated anything bc I wasn't confident enough with unscripted spoken japanese.
By 2022 I got the hang of it and started translating stuffs for kamen rider. And this year I can listen to fanta's radio while doing chores without thinking too much about it but can still understand their conversation! I read a novel for the first time!
I'm sorry that this got too long but I hope it helped to give you an idea of where to start! Here's to learning more! 👍

Star Wars audiobooks! I've been restless for new Star Wars since Andor ended. Been going through a handful of Disney era and Legends novels over the last few months. I have enough reactions to get down into an actual post. Mostly I'm just going to be foaming at the mouth over Marc Thompson and Sam Witwer's narration and falling over myself about the characters. I have listened to: Dark Disciple, Last Shot, Disney Thrawn trilogy, Heir to the Empire, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. Lots of these books I liked, some of them I didn't but the narration and characters are still amazing. Motherfucking MARA JADE. Asajj Ventress!!!!!!!! I have no rational mind about Maul and I am one of those feral stick figures chewing on Thrawn. Hnnghh.
First of all, let me start with Marc Thompson. He's been doing the audiobooks for years and years now. Here’s a great intro where he’s talking about the differences of doing character voices and learning the importance of bringing the right dynamic to the prose. He slips so seamlessly into his Star Wars voices reel, ahaha.
youtube
Here is a really cute Lip Sync Battle where Marc Thompson will say a line and then have a fan lip sync the same line back at the camera. His energy, his energy I love it so much. Everyone is having SO MUCH FUN. There’s also a cameo by Star Wars author Christie Golden in this video. Super cute.
youtube
First book:
Dark Disciple - Christie Golden Narrated by Marc Thompson
Alright I actually had picked this up ages go from my library and never read it but since I’ve been on an audiobook kick, Marc Thompson got me goin’ with alllll his voices.
I love Asajj Ventress so I was pretty much guaranteed to enjoy something from this book. Apparently it was written based on some unfinished scripts for an arc that would have happened if the show didn’t get cancelled. Knowing this makes a lot more sense with regards to the pacing and I think I would have preferred the animated episodic for this since I think a lot of the early Quinlan and Asajj stuff dragged a little too much. However I did appreciate getting more of a deeper dive in Asajj’s head and it really made me want to go digging through AO3 for some amazing character studies that I know must exist at this point.
But yeah, I didn’t think I’d enjoy the eventual romance between Asajj and Quinlan but Quinlan was such a perfect set-up for a fall from the Jedi Order. I think I’m just really easy when it comes to whumping the fuck out of Jedi with torture and their own emotional repression.
I was really into all the Dathomir scenes and the history of Asajj with her sisters being touched upon again and how she managed to not “go crazy from the dark side” because of the balance she found because she was a Nightsister.
A++ for Asajj having to go to Boba fucking Fett to mount a rescue mission inside a fake heist.
Really I think I’m just so easy for murdery women with a rage boner. Fuck Dooku.
Marc Thompson’s narration was a delight and I definitely would recommend this for anyone who enjoyed The Clone Wars series and wanted to get a little more Asajj screen time. Here’s a scene where someone pulled Clone Wars clips and put Dark Disciple audio underneath. Marc Thompson bringing incredible Dooku subservience and Sidious danger, hhhngh.
youtube
7/10, would listen to again even though I'd rather see the finished episodes.
Last Shot (A Han and Lando Novel) - Daniel Jose Older Narrated by Marc Thompson, Daniel Jose Older and January LaVoy
This book was extremely disappointing. Normally I am a fan of seeing fan-favorites have their mid-life crises but I was extremely bored and over with Older’s take on Han having an existential crisis of who he was as a father an husband in this post-Empire world. Lando on the other hand, was having a crisis of genuinely having fallen in love and not knowing how to handle that. I fucking loved that.
This book had multiple timelines and jumped around a lot and I don’t know if I just wasn’t focused enough while listening but the timeline jumps were jarring and incomprehensible at times. The action plot ended up being rather unsatisfying.
It was also very jarring to have three narrators for the different timelines and I kind of feel bad because I went and looked and Older’s narration is just consistently getting panned across all reviewers—and for good reason. Thompson and LaVoy are experienced voice actors and with Older in the middle, Older just seems slapdash in his reading. If it was just Older all the way through I might have been more forgiving but going back and forth with everyone… it really was painful at times.
It was a slog to get through this book, really. What I actually really enjoyed was all the original characters: an Ewok slicer, a nonbinary hot shot pilot, and Lando’s love of his life whose name is slipping my mind even now, agh. I wasn’t fan of the villain character, unfortunately, and it was a bit of a letdown that the action plot was just… I don’t know, boring. It was a riff on transhumanism except with droids and a bit of droid supremacy to it and I was just... tired by it.
Marc Thompson was KILLING it tho. His performances always fucking delight me. January LaVoy’s narration of Lando and L-3 were also really great even though I just wasn’t into the scenes themselves.
3/10 - do not recommend, HOWEVER I would read fic about the lady ewok hacker Peekpa.
Darth Maul: Shadow hunter By Michael Reeves Narrated by SAM WITWER
I am, as the fannish parlance goes, Not Normal about Maul or Sam Witwer's performance as Maul.
This novel takes place just before the events of The Phantom Menace and it’s a Star Wars story that is very, very narrow in scope. The stakes are still very high because someone has gained information about the Trade Federation’s impending blockade and Sidious sends Maul to go and take care of it. The whole story takes place in the underbelly of Coruscant and I gotta say, it’s really refreshing after going through a bunch of Star Wars shows, books and films where it’s all galactic hopping whirlwind stuff to have that's in one place and happening in a short amount of time. I think it's something like 2 or 3 days that all the events happen.
Michael Reeves is a man of deep characterization and creates an amazing sense of place in the Black Sun alley of Corusant. We get very little Sidious and Maul interaction but what bits we do get are fascinating and haunting. I do like the ‘less is more’ approach here with these two...although I will say I’m not sure I would have picked up this book if I hadn’t gone through The Clone Wars and lost my goddamn mind over Sam Witwer’s portrayal of Maul.
And his performance here. In this book. I don’t know what it is about Witwer but when he does Maul my brain just lights up in a way that I haven’t really gotten outside of live theater performances. He brings this sense of ruthlessness and competence to Maul, his gleeful rage and oscillating mania as he ends up tracking an information broker and Jedi Padawan. Oh, Witwer is truly just. Fucking amazing, okay.
I would love this book even if it wasn’t Witwer narrating it but my god he elevates it to a whole new level. I got my copy from the library but it is immediately on my to-buy list once I can buy books again.
Michael Reeves also wrote for Batman the Animated series and Gargoyles which makes a whole lot of sense in the way he’s able to just create such lush sensory detail of place and people, oh holy fuck. He’s the writer who wrote the Gargoyles episode about Broadway accidentally shooting Elisa with her gun (this is an episode that got pulled from airing and I don’t think they have on Disney+ right now). Aw man, alright I definitely need to read more of his stuff now.
The action plot is Lorn Pavan is a down-on-his-luck fellow who got information he shouldn’t have and he is trying to sell it, Darsha the Jedi Padawan gets sent down to bring in a Black Sun informant and things go tits up for her in horrible ways. Darsha and Lorn’s paths collide and they try to survive Maul. I love everything about these characters, except for the end where Lorn started having romantic feelings about the Padawan. Blech.
Also somehow I think I-5 is now my second favorite droid character I’ve come across in the greater Star Wars canon (Chopper will always be my #1 grumpy cat droid). Witwer has the best dry delivery for the droid character. Like. It’s so fucking GOOD.
I’m also impossibly impressed and obsessed with Witwer’s performance of Sidious and the Jedi Council. His Qui-Gon is SO FUCKING GOOD. His Palaptine has my teeth rattling in my head oh my god.
Here’s the first 5 or so minutes of Shadow Hunter, hhnngh. You get Maul, Sidious a drunk Lorn Pavan, and my new droid bestie I-5:
youtube
I am 100% going to be reading Michael Reeves’ other Star Wars novels. Apparently he has a series that follows a Jedi-in-hiding post-Order 66 and I want to just dunk my head in all the Star Wars noir, I guess, yes please.
10/10 - I love, would heartily recommend to anyone wanting a kind of story that’s more heavy on character and setting and also SAM WITWER!!!!!!!!! Maul. Hnnghghghgh.
TIMOTHY ZAHN TIME.
Thrawn Trilogy (Disney era) Thrawn, Thrawn Alliances, Thrawn Treason Narrated by Marc Thompson
youtube
This was my second time through the Disney novels. I watched Star Wars Rebels first, then my friend jb_slasher told me about Thrawn having novels. I had vaguely heard of Heir to the Empire over the years and also my friend recommended the Disney trilogy so I figured I’d start with that since I was diving off from Disney canon anyway.
My god I love this trilogy so fuckin’ much. Marc Thompson out here nailing it. This Thrawn is the type of character who is always the smartest person in the room and I should get irritated by that like all the other characters but mmmm, I have a competence kink. And I am just over the moon with how he instills loyally and allegiance in his crew who can now have a commander who is not interested in politicking his way through things but actually is committed to strategy and whatnot.
Also fucking Zahn made Thrawn go back to space college. And gave him a little protege who he grew to admire. Eli Vanto is a great character, I am reading a lot of slash about them obviously but yeah, I loved seeing his growth throughout the trilogy. And THRAWN ALLIANCE. Y’all. Y’all. The Star Wars memes about Thrawn and Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker are AMAZING and really do the hilarity so much justice. Here's a fantastic book trailer cut together with Marc Thompson' narration, hnngh.
youtube
This man absolutely knows who Darth Vader is and Darth Vader is like “oh fuck no you don’t.” And when Thrawn had met Anakin during the Clone Wars and Anakin had to try and work together with him? Perfection. Bonus Padme getting to be a ridiculous and foolish badass when she goes looking for trouble. And also her also having a competence kink for Thrawn, too. It cracks me the fuck uuuuuup, okay.
Thrawn absolutely hates politics so fucking much and I love to see how that is the primary way he gets thwarted or has to build his strategy around. Because people are fucking assholes and political everywhere. Seriously, have I mentioned how much I love Marc Thompson??
youtube
Thrawn Treason gave us more of Thrawn’s people and whatnot with the Chiss which I also liked but I’m really less interested in their motivations and experiences as a culture on the edge of the Empire. More here for Vanto now getting to be the fish-out-of-water and leveling up and getting all the respect he deserves.
MARC THOMPSON, y’all. He does a great Thrawn, an AMAZING whinybaby sycophant Ronan of the Starkiller Project, and his Eli Vanto Space Yokel intonation is 💋. Also I feel like the loyalty and trust that Thrawn earns from his subordinates really feeds into this praise kink thing that everyone develops by being around him. I love it.
10/10 will lose my mind and listen/read this trilogy again and also read all the fanfic about it.
Heir to the Empire Timothy Zahn
I am sorry it took me 30 years to get here but I AM NOW HERE FOR MARA JADE’S RAGE BONER. Let me repeat: MARA. JADE. !!!!!!!!!
Also holy fuck. Luke Skywalker getting to be smart, technically creative and able to navigate through terrible situations in spite of a Force-Blocking Macguffin is AMAZING. I was not expecting to be this into a post-Empire Luke but I really fucking loved it.
I also love all of the Han and Lando scenes in this (WAY MORE than Last Shot, sorry Daniel Jose Older).
Leia and Chewie!! On Kashyyk!! Talon Karrde was so great (Thompson made him kind of sound like Antonio Banderas??)
Thrawn and his bestie Pelleaon! What a fascinating dynamic.
I actually was not very into Thrawn’s vibes in this book as much as I was in the Disney stuff. I don’t know if it’s because of the vibes they wrote him in Star Wars rebels that got filtered back into Zahn’s take on him for the books (or if it was the other way around?) - Like, the calculating tactical and man of strategy is still there, but… hm, I’ve been struggling to articulate what about it that didn’t tickle me as much. He’s still playing the long game in every situation but I don’t know… I think there’s this more pragmatic view of people he has in the Disney books that he doesn’t get here in the first of this trilogy. I haven’t gotten to the other two books from this series yet so maybe I’ll feel differently later. The anniversary edition of the audiobook that I got from my library was narrated by Marc Thompson and he (you'll be so surprised) fucking nailed it all for me. Love love love.
10/10 timothy zahn, I love you. You got an amazing way of writing action. I gotta read more of your stuff. Anyway, I'm also starting the Ahsoka novella that I think (??) is not quite canon anymore since they got a final season for Clone Wars, but it's by E.K. Johnston and narrated by Ahoska's voice actor Ashley Eckstein. Don't have enough thoughts about it yet but I love Ahsoka so I'm sure I'll have a decent time.

Oh man I can't agree enough, when I first started looking for fics I was honestly shocked there wasn't more. Especially for Jesse.
And luckily enough I've actually already started writing those headcanons a few days ago! So absolutely I can 💖

SFW
✯ He's a handsy person, he loves holding hands, having an arm around your shoulder or waist, having you sitting on his lap, etc etc.
✯ An excellent kisser too, soft yet passionate, he loves to have one hand bracing the back of your neck or on your jaw, he just wants to touch you.
✯ I've talked about this before but... the hugs this man gives are incredible. Very warm, loving, and safe feeling. The best hugs come when you're stressed or sad, he's just so caring and will bring you into his arms with no hesitation (and if you want it), hand softly stroking down your back and arms, keeping you securely pressed against him.
✯ He's a gift giver. It's his love language and that is definitely shown in your relationship. Perfumes, flowers, candy/chocolates (if you’re into that), movies, his own clothes, and sometimes things he'll find when walking outside like pretty rocks.
✯ The dates can be pretty cute, picnics in a clearing in the woods, him taking you to some local restaurants and diners, maybe even some out of town just for a fun little day adventure.
And the best one yet, going to the Renaissance Festival. What's better than dressing up during pirate weekend, eating a giant turkey leg while watching two people joust, and buying a sword and other interesting trinkets at the end of the day.
✯ Nights hanging out with Jesse and Pete are a must, playing cards or videos games while eating pizza. They were very quick to take you into the group when you and Badger got together.
And so as a result you were often at Jesse’s or Pete’s with a controller in your hand or sitting on the couch listening to your boyfriend ramble about another ‘script’ he’s written or a light hearted ramble about plot holes in a show he’s been watching.
✯ Since it’s Badger I feel like I’m sort of required to bring this up, but if you don’t do drugs he’s not going to be the type to try and pressure you into it if you give him a hard “No.”
✯ At night if you’re sleeping in the same bed, he’s not much of a cuddler (that’s more for when you’re both laying on the couch together), but he will have a hand laying on your forearm if you have your hand up next to your face, or a hand lazily laying on your stomach or waist.
✯ Will make you laugh all the time, whether it’s intentional or not, he’s just the type of guy who’s always funny somehow.
NSFW
✯ He's soft and sweet but he can be rough if you ask him to. A different side of him comes out if you beg hard enough.
✯ Not surprising to literally anyone but he's probably into roleplay, which is where this said rough side can come out.
✯ Loves having sex after smoking weed (but will only do it if you’re comfortable with that).
✯ He’s not very loud but you can hear the whispery curses and small moans passing his lips.
✯ I think he'd be pretty thick, but about average size.
✯ And is probably way too good at eating pussy. Like if he could he’d spend the rest of his life just doing that, he’s a fucking animal.
✯ Likes missionary not because he's boring but because he likes looking at you. Also loves to fuck with your back to his chest, both kneeling on the bed (or in front of a mirror) with him thrusting up into you.
✯ The easiest way to get him going is by sitting on his lap and kissing his neck while playing with his hair.
✯ If you were to give him a blowjob that’s probably the only time you’ll hear full moans come from him. His head thrown back on the couch, his hands coming down to the back of your head and trying his hardest not to thrust up into your mouth, or push you further down. He wants you to go at your own pace but oh god...
“Oh holy fuck... Baby please... Fuck you feel so good. I’m gonna cum-”
✯ He can also be pretty talkative too depending on if he’s high or not. If he is he’s definitely a bit more talkative, praises falling from his lips every few seconds, telling you “Oh fuck you’re doing so good.” or “Keep doing that- please oh god...”
✯ He’s a switch, he doesn’t mind being on the top or or underneath you depending on how the both of you are feeling.
✯ For anything particular he may be into I’d say he likes having his hair pulled, cockwarming, and I could be projecting but he probably has a bit of a breeding kink.

So one of my friends who makes games (here’s her itch.io, she’s made some REALLY neat stuff AND is currently making some even neater stuff right now that I may or may not be helping with) recently told me about the concept of developer logs. And I heard that and immediately was like… “Well I love talking about my projects…and I’m currently working on a comic.” So I'm making the Milwaukee Protocol devlog! Which will hopefully keep me on track with working on it! I’ll also throw in smaller updates about other side projects at the same time, just for fun.
Milwaukee Protocol is a horror comic about- you guessed it- rabies. It follows Lyssa (named for everyones favorite virus, lyssavirus) after she gets bitten by a weird animal in the woods and starts experiencing rabies-like symptoms despite the fact that medically, there’s nothing wrong with her. It’s about losing control! It’s about changing in ways nobody understands! It’s about suffering the consequences of completely avoidable choices! It’s about instilling the sheer terror/fascination surrounding rabies that I’ve had since I was a child in other people! I’m not sure how coherent it is, but it’s still being written, and at the very least I’m excited about it.
I’m still writing the script and working on actually figuring out what everything and everyone looks like (something I skimped on for the last comic I made, which I think made it suffer), but I’m hoping to put my all into this one! I’m hoping to have the script done by mid-November, and this is where we are now.
Tumblr media
Thrilling. I know. God I love Notion. I'll hopefully have actual drawings of them next week but it has been a very overwhelming 2 weeks and also im sick so things are going very very slow.
While I figure out how to put this beast together, I'm also trying to put together some search and find pages just for fun- I started one for the Fool tarot card, since it felt like a fun theme to start with. That said, I'm not a huge fan of the composition so I might go back and redraw it. I'm also making a comic for college using a rubber duck as an allegory for having a crush on someone because they make you do weird stuff in art school sometimes.
I'm also listening to a bunch of stuff this week! A lot of Parkdale Haunt, which is a horror podcast about two women and the creepy old house that one of them inherits. Probably not the best when my only roommate right now is a fridge that makes sounds like human breathing, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make for a good horror podcast.

The Secret Saturdays Iceberg
Original iceberg here.
Jay Stephens’ answers on the Toonzone Forums here, his Insta here, blogspot here. List of comics here.
THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS!
“I watched a couple episodes while it was still airing”
What most people know about Secret Saturdays from having seen it a couple times when it was on. It’s a children’s cartoon.
Doc and Drew have an exchange that goes “when have I ever done anything rash or irresponsible?” “I keep a list. It’s alphabetized,” which has plagued incorrect quotes blogs for years. Many people know the quote without knowing the show it’s from.
“I watched it through to the end”
This tier is about stuff you know about how hard the show goes once you watch it through the first time.
All cryptids in the show are based on real-life cryptids, mythological creatures, or prehistoric animals: true with a single-digit number of exceptions. The TSS wiki has done a really good job of cataloguing them.
Children die on-screen: both Zak Monday AND Zak Saturday die on-screen. It’s great.
Sneople: nagas.
Clone: Francis is a fucking clone! Holy shit!
Fisk has actual dialogue: This one actually belongs in the “I followed Jay Stephens” tier, as he has revealed that Fisk is written actual lines in the script, which are then translated to “Fisk-speak” by the voice actor.
Cheechoo is Inuit / Beeman is autistic / It’s the glasses: Cheechoo wears traditional inuit sunglasses, and also references the far north of Canada as being his “ancestral home” and having grown up there.
Tumblr media
Beeman, meanwhile, has a hard time picking up on social cues (”he’s a little rude to everybody,” Jay once said on the Toonzone forums, confirming that Beeman isn’t acting like that because he dislikes Zak or anything -- in fact, he acts the same way even when he’s actively trying to bond with Zak over his fake UFO footage), has a really good time watching hours of (what most consider boring) footage related to his particular interest, and his glasses are probably tinted pink to deal with photosensitivity, a common symptom.
Tumblr media
Wadi is Bedouin: The Bedouin are nomadic Arab tribes that live in the desert. So, like. Yeah.
Last will and testament of a guy who drowned: Zak and Doyle find the titular will in the episode where a lake is trying to hunt and kill them, left behind by someone that the lake has previously hunted and killed.
DNA brothers: Do you guys remember the episode where Zak, Fisk, and Komodo all get spliced together? Was that fucked up or what
Forgot to put this one on there but do you guys remember when Argost dressed up in an SS uniform look-alike to taunt the Saturdays in Once More the Nightmare Factory? Incredible.
“I read some character analyses”
This tier is all about realizing the full implications of the stuff they show in this children’s cartoon where they can’t say the word “kill.”
Serial killer that keeps trophies: I think Van Rook literally expresses disgust over how Argost kept trophies during his yeti era. Incidentally, this means Van Rook has ALSO killed multiple people, since at least he doesn’t keep trophies, lol.
Doyle has probably killed people and is definitely a felon: Doyle is cut short before he can elaborate on how many places he has a criminal record; he’s definitely stolen priceless cultural artifacts and other goods well above the felony limit, he has a story he doesn’t give Zak the full details of because “then things get messy. Let’s just say the bird and I took care of it.” Not to mention how many times Zak’s parents stress to him that Doyle has lived a dirty life, and he’s done many bad, bad things. Doyle has killed people you can’t change my mind.
Doc was Drew’s rebound romance: Drew dated Van Rook in college, presumably broke up with him when she realized he was studying archaeology so that he could steal artifacts to sell, and later wound up with Doc. She’s in her 30′s-or-so according to Jay (while Doc is in his 40′s-or-so) and her kid is 11 at the start of the story. She’s a “trained archaeologist,” meaning she’s probably got a PhD after at least 5, 6 years of college (she's a genius, so I wouldn't be surprised if she got it sooner than the usual 8 years We know she's an archaeologist from the Field Guide). So there’s a reasonable buffer of a few years between her dating Van Rook and her meeting Doc while mountain-climbing (Doc mentions this is how they met in the blue tiger episode), so he’s not necessarily her rebound romance exactly, but it’s funnier to word it that way.
Doc really thought Munya killed his family: In Once More the Nightmare Factory, when Doc reaches Munya after being separated by his family, Munya takes the tokens with Doc’s family’s faces on them and throws them in the trash to taunt him. Doc proceeds to go berserk and kick Munya’s ass (and nearly choke that bitch Argost out), while screaming that Argost took “everything” from him. So they can’t, like, have Doc actually SAY “you killed my family, you bitch!” but that is definitely what he was thinking. I also want to note here that part of Doc’s specific baggage throughout the episode is that he blames himself for the 43 secret scientists that died the first time they tried to assault Weird World - people who were his colleagues, if not his friends - so just keep that in mind when Doyle comes in later to rub in Doc’s face how easy it is to break in.
On that note, RIP the 43 secret scientists that died the first time they tried to assault Weird World.
The nagas were really gonna let them die: In the Legion of Garuda, Zak tricks the nagas into letting him into their sanctum by having his parents fight the Secret Scientists above the river, while pretending to the nagas that he’s decided to switch sides because the humans won’t stop coming after him. The nagas let him in and promise to help his family, but once Zak is out of earshot, Rani Nagi tells her guards to leave Zaks’ parents to their fate. “Give the boy a tragedy to avenge.” Bruh.
RIP Von Finster: RIP to the scorpion man, who was definitely killed after Argost caught him to silence him since he knew things about Argost’s past. This is what they meant when they said that people who know things about Argost were “disappearing,” and why Von Finster was so scared.
RIP Mizuki’s body: why does Mizuki in hibagon’s body cry out in rage when he sees his human body crushed under the rubble? Because that body is actually a corpse, man! On that note, RIP Ulraj’s dad, forgot about that one.
RIP xing-xing: so apparently the xing-xing shows up in War of the Cryptids so I messed up on this one. Just replace it with Ulraj’s dad.
RIP Dr. Basil: Yeah Doc’s father figure is dead. Old age probably, but also maybe he was killed as retaliation for scrapping the genetic human/cryptid testing research.
Argost’s body count is so high holy shit: 43 secret scientists, Ulraj’s dad, Von Finster, Drew & Doyle’s parents, Zak Monday, and Zak Saturday - and that’s just the deaths we KNOW ABOUT!
Forgot to put this in there but damn the Legion of Garuda guy was seriously gonna kill Zak, like holy shit. So many people want this 11-12 year old boy dead
“I followed Jay Stephens”
This tier is all fun Word of God stuff if you happened to follow Jay Stephens while he was posting on the Toonzone forums while the show was running, from his old blogspot, or while he’s talking to people on instagram. I have a minor and not exhaustive collection of such postings here.
Smoke mirror is NOT a mirror universe / It’s just a shittier universe: According to Jay himself on the Toonzone forums, and in line with actual Aztec mythology, the Smoke Mirror world is NOT a mirror universe. Aztec cosmology states that the world has ended and been remade 4 times, each stint being represented by a different god as the sun, and we're currently on our fifth sun. "The Smoking Mirror" is an epithet used to refer to Tetzcatlipoca (whose temple the Smoke Mirror was found in), who had the dubious honor of being the first sun, and his sun was black and only shed half as much light as our current one, possibly related to how he was missing a leg. Thus, the Smoke Mirror is not a portal to a mirror dimension - the fandom just kind of assumed it was because that's the common trope, but Jay has explicitly said that it isn't one. Rather, the Smoke Mirror is a portal a world inspired by Tetzcatlipoca's sun, a darker and twisted world where everything is generally much worse. This is further enforced by the fact that the Wii/DS/PS2 game is literally about this myth, as the game is called “Beasts of the Fifth Sun.”
Screwed by the network: The show barely ever had reruns shown and was constantly having its timeslot shafted by sportsball. It was insanely hard to keep up with the show as new episodes came out and even harder to catch up on missed episodes, which was death for a show with such tight continuity. On top of that, season 2 was only ten episodes, which is NOT standard (season 1 had 26 episodes and a half-season would be 13), which means they had to cut more than half of season 2′s contents. You can really feel how rushed it is in the last three episodes.
Dodo???:
The executives at Discovery Kids had spent many hours telling me that my original Tutenstein designs were "too cute" and "too Casper", so, stubborn jerk that I am, I made sure to make this one even cuter. For inspiration, I went over my old Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse comics... particularly the Seven Ghosts and Phantom Blot stuff... excellent, classic work. My idea was to update the 'funny animal mystery trio' by incorporating my love of Cryptozoology into the pitch. It went a little like this:"CRYPTIDS features a crack team of globe trotting cryptozoologists uniquely qualified for the job because they themselves were once cryptids! OKAPI, KOMODO, and MEGAMOUTH, along with their nine-year-old human mascot, FRANCIS, serve as a sort of anti-detective team. Scooting across land, sea, and air in their fantastic CAMPERCOPTER, their never-ending goal is to preserve the mystery of the world’s strangest creatures before they are exposed by humans… or destroyed by the Cryptids' nemesis, MONSIEUR DODO."I pitched it to a bunch of studios and got some interest, but, ultimately this incarnation went nowhere. Nobody 'got' the design, commenting that it looked like a kiddie show but read edgier. When I brought up the classic Floyd Gottfredson Micky Mouse adventure comics, I got blank stares. Not even Walt Disney Television Animation knew who or what I was talking about. Sigh... back to the drawing board.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doc’s design was based on Harry Belafonte: Said on Jay’s Insta.
Doc and Drew canonically straight but everyone else is open season: Said on Jay’s Insta. FWIW Doyle gives me really strong bisexual energy.
Viral Marketing: The show’s initial ads were found footage-style short videos of horrific puppets of the show’s cryptid protagonists. I think they’re still up on youtube.
List of “hundreds” of creatures compiled for the show: Said on Jay’s Blogspot.
I forgot to mention this one, but Jay Stephens says that in-universe, cryptids aren’t just “creatures unproven to science,” but rather, “creatures that share a common, mystical bond.” It’s never said in-universe but I figured I’d let you guys know that this is what sets cryptids apart from regular animals.
Can’t “stay on the side of good” if show didn’t end how it ended: This is referring to how, according to Jay on the Toonzone forums, Zak losing his powers was the only way for him to firmly stay on the side of good. This is a very contentious opinion in the fanbase, but honestly, I kind of get it. By the end of the show, Zak has enough power to destroy human civilization within a week, anytime he feels like it, just by thinking about it. And he’s 13 years old. Humanity wouldn’t survive if he had, like, an emo phase when he turned 16. As long as he has that kind of unchecked power, there’s ALWAYS going to be doubt as to whether or not it’s safe to let him wander around, there’s ALWAYS going to be people who either want him dead for the good of mankind or want to use and manipulate him to their own ends, and - as we see in Return of Tsul’Kalu - he’s not immune to despair, as he literally says “if even the good cryptids think I’m destined for evil, I don’t know why I should even fight it anymore.” Even assuming Zak is incorruptibly “good” (which, again, we have evidence that he isn’t), at some point he’s going to have to start thinking about whether it’s his responsibility to police humanity. If people are illegally burning down the rainforests, and the government won’t do anything, wouldn’t Zak be morally obligated to do something extrajudicial about that? Where does that slippery slope end? So, like, honestly, I kind of agree. The only way for him to firmly stay on the side of good is for him to lose his incredible power, because you know what they say about absolute power.
“I have done a lot of research into the show”
This tier is about doing a bit of extraneous googling into tidbits that are brought up in the show. The cryptids all being based on real things is pretty common knowledge, but there’s so much more in this show that’s based on real stuff than that.
Drew’s fire sword is Manjushri’s khadga: Drew’s fire sword is based on the blade (khadga is the specific type of sword) that the bodhisattva Manjushri wields. It symbolizes wisdom, which cuts through duality and ignorance. And there are ones from Tibet (where Drew was raised) that look JUST LIKE the one in the show.
Tumblr media
Tetzcatlipoca’s epithet was “The Smoking Mirror”: Most of this is covered in the previous section, but did you know that Tetzcatlipoca was considered the rival to Quetzalcoatl? This is especially interesting given that Quetzalcoatl is the feathered serpent, and Kur was believed to be a serpentine dragon (more on that later). I will also mention that Tetzcatlipoca transformed into a jaguar after Quetzalcoatl struck down his stint as sun, by the way. For fanart purposes, you know.
Garuda is a mythological Hindu figure: Garuda is a demigod in Hindu mythology that is depicted either as a giant bird resembling a kite (sea-eagle), or a bird furry. There’s a myth where he eats nagas. This is why the Legion of Garuda is named after him, and why the wizard guy summons a giant eagle illusion to scare off the nagas.
Kumari Kandam, Lemuria, Shangri-La Real: Kumari Kandam and Lemuria are two names for the same proposed (and disproven) sunken land bridge between the Indian subcontinent and Madagascar, which would’ve explained how monkeys got to Madagascar and became lemurs (hence the name). Due to some Hippie New Age Bull Shit, the survivors of Lemuria (often interchangeably used with Atlantis) moved to the Mt. Shasta region of California, where myths and legends of “lemurians” persist to this day. Shangri-La (the Lemurian homeland in the show) is unrelated to the two and is instead a fictional earthly paradise located in the Himalayas.
Dead Sea Scrolls reference: The scroll Wadi finds is definitely a reference to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Related to that,
Methuselah Tree Real: In real life, the methuselah tree is the oldest tree in the world, and - like in the show - its location is a carefully guarded secret. Not because it’s the font of all water in the world (a clear reference to the Norse myth of the World Tree and possibly a reference to the Zamzam Well), but to avoid vandalism, as we all know what people are like.
Inaccessible Island Real: Argost briefly mentions that they’re on Inaccessible Island before he steals Zak Monday’s powers. This is a real, shitty little island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Tomb of Kur Real: The Official Cryptid Field Guide lists the Tomb of Kur as the “Kohker Archaeological Site.” This is a real place, and is a temple dedicated to Shiva.
Library at Alexandria Real: The Library at Alexandria was a massive collection of books - every book brought into port at Alexandria would be copied, the copy stored in the library, and the original returned to its owner. Such a massive collection... all burned down. Tragic.
Naga fireball phenomenon Real: There’s a phenomenon that happens along the Mekong River where fireballs regularly erupt. The family goes looking for the naga using this phenomenon in the season 2 premier.
Mines set on fire that stay on fire for years Real: The mine that’s on fire in the bunyip episode is probably a reference to Burning Mountain, a mountain in Australia that has a fire under it that’s been burning for 6000 years. There’s many other such long-lived fires in the world.
Judaculla Rocks Real: The rock Zak damages in Return of Tsul’Kalu is the Judaculla rock, which is in the show the same as it is in real life - significant to the Cherokee people and associated with Tsul’Kalu, the Master of Game.
“Kur” used to refer to the first mythological dragon: So we now know that “Kur” referred to a TON of different things - the mountains, the lands, the people who came from the mountains, the netherworld, etc. HOWEVER, at the time, the main person writing about Kur attributed the word to a serpentine beast living at the bottom of the Netherworld, which he then called the first dragon ever depicted in human mythology. This has been more or less debunked now, but it’s what the show was using. Serpentine symbolism is used in the show to represent Kur - there’s a set of snakes on some of the doors in Kur’s tomb, and Kur’s most dedicated servants are sneople.
“I have done TOO MUCH research into the show.”
This tier is about my descent into madness. It covers research that wouldn’t normally be performed, supplementary material that very few people know about, etc.
Men of the Saturday family have biblical names: First we have Solomon Saturday and Zak Saturday, with Zak pretty obviously standing in for some variant of Zakariya/Zechariah. The prequel comics also give us an Elijah Saturday and a Samuel Saturday, so this is a very deliberate choice.
Solomon = “peace” but also associated with the Lesser Key of Solomon: The Lesser Key of Solomon is a famous demonology grimoire that lists several demons, their ranks, what they do, and how to summon them. A little bit like a cryptopedia.
Zak = Zakariya = “God Has Remembered”: That’s what his name means. And, like... kind of spooky considering Zak’s the reincarnation of a god. Now, while lots of spellings of this name exist, I prefer Zakariya. I think Doc initially would've wanted Zachariah/Zechariah because it's more biblical, but I also personally believe Drew (who speaks Arabic and is a white mom) would go for something a little more unique, compromising on the Arabic spelling. Plus, it has the K in it. Which I like. Though it would be in character for Zak to be Zachariah and shorten it with a K on purpose himself to look cooler. Either way, Zakariya/Zachariah/any of its variants is almost certainly what Zak is short for. Zechariah is also, famously, the last of the martyrs. And martyr himself Zak did!
Drew and Doyle are Gaelic / Ginger confirmed: Drew is albino so she wouldn’t have them but we were cheated out of Doyle with freckles. This is, incidentally, probably why Zak has freckles in the Ben10 crossover that I don’t like thinking about.
Wadi = riverbed that sometimes dries up: Wadi, noun. A valley, gully, or streambed in northern Africa and southwest Asia that remains dry except during the rainy season. It’s symbolism about the whole Eterno thing.
Short hair Drew: You guys want some concept art?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zak’s name used to be Francis:
Tumblr media
Abbey sold plundered relics to museums for money: Also from the prequel comics; Abbey was Zak’s favorite babysitter because she used to take him on wild wacky adventures... robbing tombs. And then selling the artifacts she’d find there to museums. Van Rook shows up and does a “not so different” on her for this. And he was sooo right!
Divining rod = Shiva’s trident: This fucking thing HAUNTED ME FOR YEARS
Tumblr media
Because that’s not any “divining rod” or “dowsing rod” I know about! Well, GUESS WHAT.
Tumblr media
It’s Shiva’s fucking trident. It symbolizes many different trinities, like “past/present/future” and “joy/compassion/love” and stuff. YEARS IT TOOK ME.
Kur is associated with the Hindu god Shiva, known as “The Destroyer”: Kur’s tomb is literally a temple dedicated to Shiva, one of Shiva's symbols is a cobra coiled around his neck (and Rani Nagi famously uses cobras to chat), and the divining rod used to find Kur is shaped like Shiva’s trishula. Furthermore, one of Shiva's aspects is the King of Beasts. So, like, yeah. The cobra tends to symbolize how Shiva has tamed the venomous ego, and his dominion over all animals on earth, so... they are making a really obvious parallel here. Rani Nagi even calls Kur “the destroyer” at one point! The clear implication of this association is both to more strongly enforce the idea that Kur is something divine, or seen as divine, and to cast its destruction in a more ambiguous light - Shiva may be the destroyer, but he is also the preserver, and in no iteration of Hinduism is he treated as an evil deity. Creation, preservation, and destruction is merely a natural cycle, one of the trinities represented by Shiva's trident. But it sure sucks for the people who are getting destroyed, so it's natural a creature whose existence IS destroying things would be viewed as "evil" or "bad" by the unfortunate species getting their asses kicked.
“These questions plague me deep into the night”
These are just questions that haunt me. Someone save me from this madness

From what I've seen online, the major consensus amongst HP fans is that Cursed Child is NOT canon ( and many simply pretend it doesn't exist). I remember when it first came out and was being promoted, both the stage show and the published script, and everyone was really excited for new HP material... until we realised that it just... wasn't canon... at all. Yeah, the idea of Voldemort as presented in the HP novels having any sort of romantic relationship with Bellatrix and having a child is simply ridiculous and certainly just exists as a way for him to have a secret child for reasons of the wacky plot... it's very tween fanfic and also very Disney channel sequel (like the og villains all having kids we never heard about is totally a real Disney channel thing).
I remember it being very clear at the time that it came out that any "pointers" or "ideas" JKR provided to the actual writer of CC must've been the very barest of bones, the tiniest of shards perhaps, because it simply read like a sort of AU fanfiction written by the most casual of fans... which, as I understand, it really was. At the time when it came out, it was pretty clear that she had very little to do with actually writing it, though I suppose more was made later of her 'involvement' to legitimise it. I heard since that someone asked her if it should be considered canon, and she said yes? Not sure how this interaction actually went down as I don't particularly care to look into it (since nothing will change my mind that the AU of CC makes no sense within the context of HP canon and lore and it was probably some kind of marketing tactic in support of the stage play) but as she clearly didn't actually write CC herself and it contradicts many things from the books she did write, I'm pretty happy to continue ignoring its existence.
What do you think of Fantastic Beasts in comparison? Personally, I put Fantastic Beasts in a separate category where I can kind of accept aspects of it as canon expansions of the lore and worldbuilding... I can see JKR's style clearly and the inconsistencies with timelines and certain characters being in places and times they shouldn't be don't bother me as much as the straight up character assassination we see in CC. To put it another way, I think CC feels like it belongs to a totally different IP and was written by a different author (because it was) while FB definitely still exists in Rowling's wizarding world, it's just the timeline is kinda off.
this is interesting context. I think she kind of has to say yes to that question in context, because like... who's going to shill out £150 to see some random dude's AU fanfiction play (if it isn't even good)? of course, JKR's stamp isn't nothing, but even she can't weld extra content into the canon by declaring it so. i see TCC like church ephemera: i'm sure SOMEONE finds it interesting or relevant to what we're doing here, but that doesn't mean it's part of the Bible.
i feel the same way about fantastic beasts, but to a lesser extent. i actually enjoyed the first fantastic beasts movie, i thought it was playful and charming and (with the exception of the dumb polyjuice plot) the perfect way to revive harry potter as a storytelling vehicle. like, yeah, it fucked up by trying to go too big too soon, but if you can remove one (1) subplot or narrative thread and have a solid movie, then as a writer, you've still done okay.
Fantastic Beasts also annoys me because it does feel like harry potter, in terms of tone and mouthfeel. it's got the sauce. it just heinously drops the ball in later installations. in particular, it starts getting nervous about holding the audience's attention and throws stuff in that just wouldn't make it in a natural, organic script — most of the shit from the original series is contrived and ill-suited to the dramatic tenor set by Movie About Funny Man Collecting Magical Animals. (e.g. going back to hogwarts? leta lestrange's secret white father revengeplot triple-rugpull? human nagini?? secret undead dumbledore brother raised by american evangelicals???). i like the idea of it very much. i'm honestly drawn to it as a creative space, because unlike TCC, there is potential there. it's just badly abused.

Went back and forth on whether or not to post these, but guess who went to Oogie Boogie bash!! Pics and thoughts under the cut if you're interested! Quick warning though, I am a lot more interested in the inner workings of theme parks than I am in the fantasy, so if you don't want to break the fourth wall, so to speak, don't read what I've written.
First, I don't usually do meet and greets because I am too aware of the fact that I'm talking to an actor, and all the questions I want to ask are "behind the curtain" type questions. But, I love cosplay, so I made an exception to check out the costume details on the Brunos.
Tumblr media
You can kinda see it here in the first picture, if you look past the blurriness, but one of the details I find most brilliant is that the lovely gentleman playing Bruno is wearing a shade of foundation a touch paler than his actual skin tone to make himself look a little grayer than he is. I saw another one of the Brunos up close and it didn't look like he was doing the same thing with his make up, so this might have been a personal choice on the part of the actor. If so, genius! If they start up an award ceremony for theme park actors, this guy wins best "Non-Prosthetic Make up" award.
Tumblr media
As for things beyond his control, all of the actors playing Bruno were a bit tall. Me included for scale. I'm 5'6" and the boots I'm wearing have a slight heel, so you can estimate my height as being 5'7" or even 5'8". This guy is about two or three inches taller than me, and the other actor I saw was the same height. I passed by the photo spot a few other times, but idk if those were additional actors or if these two guys switch back and forth all night (they're only allowed to work for like thirty minutes at a time or something). So I guess I can't say all of the actors are tall, just the two I've definitely seen. The ruana almost looked like real wool, but considering how warm it was, it was probably (hopefully) just cotton.

Did the Oogie Boogie treat trail, it moved faster than I was expecting, but had sunchips, so it loses points for that. 7/10. Mostly joking, I gave my chips to my sister. Anyways, wish I'd taken pictures of the theming, you can kinda see some of it behind Oogie Boogie, this was in the Animation Studio where they have all those screens, so they leaned into that with a lot of spoopy casino themed slide shows and a spattering of physical decorations. It didn't sound like Oogie Boogie's lines were prerecorded, but he had definitely received a script to lean on. The costume, as you can see, wasn't very scary, and the actor in it was definitely used to playing cute characters more than villains, but they did a pretty good job with the puppetry that moved the mouth. Really made it look like Oogie was talking.

Accidentally ended up on the Mother Gothel treat trail (we just thought it was one of the ones that didn't have a character). Actress was a bit young for the part (as can be expected), but damn did she play it well. As you can see, her set was beautiful, and the dress was a lighter fabric than in the movie but relatively accurate. She interacted with guests so fluidly. She asked a little girl if she listened to her mother and when the little girl shrugged and said a little bit, she said in a voice I've heard from my mother's obnoxious friends, "Well! At least she's honest!" Very convincing. I have no trouble believing this is a woman whose daughter doesn't talk to her for "no reason". 10/10.

The first character treat trail we did was Judge Doom from Roger Rabbit, unfortunately, we didn't get to linger that long because my mother had decided to forgo a scooter despite her terrible back and asking her to stand around while we took pictures of the guy in the costume would have been a war crime. But look at that set!!! There were barrels of the dip ingredients leading up to it, then you get past a tree hanging over the trail and viola! There it is. He was wearing a prosthetic chin that could have been blended onto his real face a little better, but he did some great improv when he saw a kid carrying a Roger Rabbit doll.
Tumblr media
And finally, last but not least, when the night was just about over and the lines were almost completely gone, I dragged my sister to the Ernesto Treat Trail because I'd seen pics of the costume and wanted to lay eyes on it myself. Look at that make up! It's so well built, so convincing. That's not a mask, but prosthetics, so he was able to act through them. His voice was pretty smooth, didn't get to see him sing the song, he was probably a bit too tired by this point, but he did a great job adapting Ernesto's affectations into something a little more overtly sinister.
Over all, wouldn't have minded if the party was a little longer. Or even if we'd been let into the park a little sooner so we could get some of the non-Oogie Boogie stuff out of the way while the crowds were milling about. We got in at 3, when all of the lines were a bit too long and got food, wanted to do the drawing lessons in the Animation Studio, but they stopped at 3:30, right when we had finished our meal. There weren't any shows going on, so my sister and I split up to do single rider lines (got on the Incredicoaster three times, so that was cool). I think being let in at noon would have been a bit better. I enjoyed the party, but I don't know if I'd fork over the money to do it again considering how little time I had in the park. I definitely wouldn't pay for a normal ticket and an Oogie Boogie ticket in the same day. So, they should maybe extend the time you're allowed into the park. Then again, they've sold out two years in a row, so what do I know.
