MONTHLY MEDIA: March 2024
……….FILM……….
Tumblr media
Dune: Part Two (2024) Every piece of technology felt and looked so tangible. The baby worm too! Love the tactile nature of this whole production and I hope studios take note that CG can't be the only tool in your belt. So much bigger than I imagined and just enjoyed the whole thing.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) Ages surprisingly well and a script that lets the main quartet be both funny and layered.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
Columbo (1.01 to 1.03) Hey I'm starting Columbo! Love that each episode is feature-length and Columbo appears fully formed right out of the gate. The sets and costumes are all so glamorous and L.A. Very excited to keep going.
Succession (2.05 to 3.04) The Kendall play at the end of season 2 felt very much like the Kendall play at the end of season 1 and while I'm still a huge fan of this series, I just hope it's not the same going into season 3 and 4.
Delicious in Dungeon (Episode 1.09 to 1.13) Great adaptation that isn't just a straight recreation of the artwork in the manga. The more kinetic/frantic moments in the animation are a nice departure and while they don't pop up in each episode, now that I'm 13 eps deep I can appreciate how they're sprinkled throughout.
Love is Blind (Episode 6.02 to 6.13) It still amazes me that anyone goes on reality tv.
……….YOUTUBE……….
Tumblr media
Twilight | ContraPoints by ContraPoints Yes I did watch a nearly 3-hour essay on Twilight, sexual expression, and all that comes with that. And you should too. VIDEO
Tumblr media
Instagram fatigue and the rise of 'Resentment Reels' by Taylor Lorenz While I haven't noticed this specific phenomenon, I have noticed Instagram declining as an app (both as a user trying to see anything other than ads, and a creator trying to get my work seen in between those ads). It's a bummer. VIDEO
Tumblr media
Saltburn: The Tumblr-ification of Cinema by Broey Deschanel Every since I saw Saltburn, I've been thinking about what wasn't quite sitting right with me. This unlocked a lot of what I couldn't describe and most of it stems from the writer/director's upper class upbringing. Saltburn isn't a "take down the rich" movie, it's a horror story from the perspective of a wealthy family. VIDEO
Tumblr media
Why Is It So Hard To Cross The Street? (& What You Can Do To Help) by Strong Towns Accidents where drivers hit a pedestrian are going up in my area so this really hit home. And for those feeling like there's nothing you can do at ground level, consider taking their course (not a paid sponsorship I'm just in real support of community-lead initiatives). VIDEO
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock (Complete) After picking up the last book in this series (which I've yet to read) I figured I'd start at the beginning. Love the fast pace pulpy action and I can see how this influenced the creation of D&D.
The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie (Complete) This one would lose me for stretches but the final quarter of the book is stronger. A lot less cozy and a lot more action than I was expecting but skimming other reviews it sounds like this was written during her more...adventure-focused era. Three books deep and I have to give Christie credit that each has been a completely different experience.
Tumblr media
Adventures of a Japanese Business Man by Jose Domingo (Complete) Always love going back to this nearly wordless epic that follows the titular Japanese business man. I love the complexity of the earliest panels and wish that could carry throughout more of the book, but it's always such a treat to discover just where each new panel will go.
Tumblr media
Delicious in Dungeon Volume 5 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) Enjoying rereading this with shorter breaks between volumes as I certainly missed/forgot details on my first read. It's here that the story and tone shifts from light romp to a more dramatic and dangerous affair but it never loses its spot-on humour. Love those dryad pumpkins.
Ultimate Spider-Man HC Volume 11 by Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen, David Lafuente, and more (Complete) Going from some of my other comics back to this, I'm struck by just how wordy it can get. Now knowing where the story goes, it was a great idea to prime readers to the idea of Peter Parker dying even if it's not from this event.
……….AUDIO……….
Tumblr media
Blank Check with Griffin & David (Podcast) Late to the game on this but really enjoying burning through their back catalog. Obviously started with their episode on Speed Racer as it's a near perfect film that you should watch right now.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Tuesday group just killed a mayor! So the aftermath of that is going to play out over the next couple of sessions. And the Mof1 crew is investigating the aftermath of their own district-wide catastrophe and it's all looking rather suspicious!
Tumblr media
Spot It (Blue Orange Games) I can't recommend this game enough. It's so easy to learn, rounds last maybe 5 minutes, it plays well with small or large groups of any age, and all it requires is pattern recognition and quick reflexes. Every time I've played this someone says they're going to buy a copy for themselves.
And that's it. See you in April!

COVER REVEAL!
Wonderland: A Fantasy Role-Playing setting is out this fall and you can now preorder it wherever you get your TTRPG goods. Folks often ask what’s the most supportive way to get my book. While indie book/game stores help everyone, I appreciate some sites are more budget friendly.
Either way, preordering (and leaving reviews) is the best way to support an author beyond buying their books. It tells publishers and retailers that this is the sort of stuff you want to see. Anyway I’m very excited and our plan is to do silver foil on the cover so that each cloud has its silver lining.
Happy Tuesday!

First, thank you to everyone who backed, shared, and generally supported Scallywags! We’re really proud of this game and the positive reception means so much. After launch, we got a lot of really great feedback and have since decided to pause and postpone the Kickstarter. So expect to see more Scallywags in the coming months as we revise.
Thank you again!

Ship Cards and Event Cards! In Scallywags, you use your discovered (or stolen) bones to buy ships. Your fleet of ships do battle with enemies and helps defend your islands if they battle you! Drawing 15ish ships meant exploring a range of designs and adding details so you could distinguish them from each other. Favourite part was designing the sail graphics.
With the Event Cards, the overall design was inspired by a blend of wanted and lost dog posters. I also had the idea to use these as a way to highlight the main mascot dog of the game (who remains unnamed). Kinda like the chance cards in monopoly, only far more anti-capitalist.
Scallywags is up for backing on Kickstarter right now!

More Scallywags card designs! These are the titular Scallywags you can recruit to join your pirate crew and each have a unique trait to help you along the way.
I had a lot of fun naming some of these dogs and it’s always a good time designing characters. You only have so much to work with in a single portrait so it’s an exercise in details and specificity. I love the challenge.
BACK SCALLYWAGS ON KICKSTARTER!
Happy Friday.

I want to share some individual components from Scallywags cause I love the intricacies of designing games.
The island cards are key to your adventures as a Pirate. Everyone starts off with their island base but you can only bury 4 bones there (and you need to bury 12 to win. Part of the game is exploring and discovering new islands to conquer! Some are easier to defend than others (the number in the blue shield on the right) and some even pay bones if you can keep them long enough (the black number in the white circle). I loved making these tiny worlds feel unified yet unique.
Anyway Scallywags can be backed on Kickstarter now!
Happy Thursday!

The core components of SCALLYWAGS! Each player rolls dice for the chance to find loot or discover new islands to claim, battles other players to try to take their islands (or loot), and then bury all that loot to become the greatest pirate to ever set sail! For those that missed it yesterday, Scallywags is now up on Kickstarter and being a grassroots project means every backer helps.
Happy Wednesday!

MONTHLY MEDIA: February 2024
A real grey month broken up by the colours and beauty of art. Here's how I spent the month of February.
……….FILM……….
Tumblr media
The Beekeeper (2024) Perfect February movie.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
Succession (Episode 1.01 to 2.04) Wasn't sure I was going to like this (every single character is just awful) but now I'm keen to see how these awful people are increasingly awful to each other. So far I'm really appreciating every shot that shows the staff and just the sheer number of people responsible for making the lives of these awful people as low-friction as possible. We 100% need to tax the rich more.
Delicious In Dungeon (Episode 1.05 to 1.08) Now having seen more episodes, the shifting animation styles feels more consistent overall and I love the frenetic style during the high-stress/combat scenes. If you like this show then know it's a near 1:1 with the manga but still worth reading.
……….YOUTUBE……….
Tumblr media
Pinocchio is a Story About Art and God by Jacob Geller This opened me up to a wholly new interpretation of what the story of Pinocchio is about. Also go watch the Del Toro adaptation on Netflix it's truly a work of art. VIDEO
Tumblr media
Vape-o-nomics: Why Everything is Addictive Now by Tom Nicholas In short: everything is a subscription now and it's making everything worse. Worth the watch and looking forward to further installments in this series. VIDEO
Tumblr media
This Experiment Undid Our Cities. How Do We Fix It? by Strong Towns Push back against any local government that doesn't want to introduce mixed use zoning into neighborhoods. The suburbs are subsidized by density, it's as simple as that. VIDEO
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
How To Watch Football: 52 Rules for Understanding the Beautiful Game, On and Off the Pitch by Tifo (Complete) So I actually read this over the course of a month or two. I'd read a rule or two, process, then read a couple more a day or two later. I don't even really watch football but this helped so much and now I expect I'll crush the fantasy premier league I'm in.
Tumblr media
The Big Four by Agatha Christie (Complete) Only my second Christie novel and this felt SO different. Turns out that's because it really is an outlier amongst her other works. So that was reassuring. Not terrible but I wouldn't exactly recommend it as it felt thoroughly disjointed (a result of stitching together a series of unrelated short stories).
The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett (Complete) Hey I love the Discworld series. You know this. I know this. But there's always gotta be an entry that goes on the bottom of any list. I love Rincewind, but prefer the other wizards in a less prominent role. Not one I'd recommend when trying to get into the series and probably not one I'll revisit. Oh well.
Tumblr media
Catwoman: Lonely City by Cliff Chiang (Complete) Big fan of Chiang's artistry on Paper Girls and really enjoyed this interpretation of an aging Gotham. It has such a clear and singular voice it covers so much in just four chapters! Really great read.
Silver Surfer: Black by Donny Cates, Tradd Moore, and Dave Stewart (Complete) Every time I read this I love it more and more. It's truly what I pictured comics to be when I was a kid: vibrant, dramatic, and a little bonkers. Why does the villain ride a dragon? WHO CARES it looks cool. I love it all.
Delicious in Dungeon Vol. 4 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) Watching the series and rereading the manga is really making for a great experience. This volume really highlighted that Senshi isn't a man with all the answers. In the upper levels of the dungeon, he's competent, but as they go deeper and face more dangerous monsters, the rest of the party take more of the lead. It's so good. This series is so good.
……….AUDIO……….
Tumblr media
Wolves of Glendale by Wolves of Glendale (2024) Comedy music is always tricky but for me, the comedy is second. If I don't enjoy the music having no understanding of the lyrics then I probably won't stick with it. Some tracks strike this balance better than others but I found The Gym to be a good introductory track.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Disco Elysium (ZA/UM) On one hand, I tend to prefer more...active games. Something that requires hitting buttons at the right time. On the other hand, I'm really digging the mystery and complexity of the game. It really feels like I can play this detective however I want without being forced to follow any one playstyle. Not sure how far into it I am but I read the review that it's less a detective game and more a game about being a detective and that really feels right. But I do have to say that it's...rather buggy on the Switch so that might not be the recommended way to play it.
Tumblr media
Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Tuesday crew is working towards ridding the island of a competing group of adventurers. Hook wants them gone, the Gnomes want them gone, heck even the Moss Mother wants them gone. But will they be able to do it? And the more lengthy recap is over here.
Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Mof1 D&D crew found a (literal) underground magic item shop so did a bunch of shopping after their big funeral heist. Everyone loves a good shopping session!
And that's it. See you in March!

Our Tuesday D&D crew just wrapped up another month in Neverland so I figured I’d share some art from the book. The spent a lot of time this month gearing up for a stealth meeting with Hook to discuss the island’s Elf problem.
I keep a campaign diary over on Reddit over here, if you're interested in reading more: https://www.reddit.com/user/kolbisneat/comments/il6jx2/adventures_in_neverland_master_thread/

G is for Ghostbusters!
Amanda Conrad and Hero Complex Gallery hosted a rad lil gallery show themed around a cartoon alphabet and I was given the letter G! I didn’t have much experience with the ghostbusters cartoon but after watching a bunch online, it’s a lot of fun and makes me wonder why (hot take) there’s only really one good Ghostbusters movie. Anyway check out the rest of the show cause every contribution is so good.
Happy Wednesday!
