IF we told our true stories, nobody would believe us,

the tale raw and unpainted, without the obfuscation

of pride or appearances, like a shell stripped clean

of the delicate body that once encumbered it with

needs and defenses before it was scrubbed clean

by the razor wash of endless sand and blind current.

This is required to achieve purity of spirit, to separate

it from the uncleansed ego, the labels and libels and

layers of insult that have buried us beneath ourselves,

between unrealized ambition and brutal consequence,

behind a wall erected of the skulls of each dream that

met its demise at the teeth of those who would bury us.
