Mephisto and Shiro: It's complicated. They're life partners.

I've been writing some new crazy ideas about blue exorcist lately, but they're starting to make sense.

I always had a sneaky suspicion that Mephisto acts like a "parent' with Rin, and that's because he is. And so are Shiro, Yuri and Satan.

The reason that Shiro Fujimoto was such a strong and resilient clone in section 13 experiments has everything to do with Mephisto. Mephisto realizes that a young Shiro was brash and highly intelligent, traits that the demon admires. Shiro by far was a stand-out amongst the other clones.

Shiro makes a demon contract with Mephisto, wanting power, beautiful women and a chance to be Paladin. Mephisto grants Shiro his wish. But here's the thing, how do humans get demon powers? The demon needs to partially possess that human.

This seems reasonable: Shiro appears to be the only clone from the Azazel group that can withstand the painful tests. That's because he had Mephisto's protection.

WIthout Mephisto's power, Shiro might have ended up a mindless, babbling husk, like Goro.

This is also the reason why Shiro heals so quickly after he commits suicide to dispel Satan. Shiro doesn't realize it, but it has everything to do with Mephisto standing right next to him. Mephisto tries to attribute Shiro's healing to Shemihaza, but I have serious doubts.

If a human has a contract with a demon, they heal remarkably fast when that demon is nearby. Shura explains this concept when she is injured.

I think Mephisto possessed Shiro and used his powers to keep him alive.

When Mephisto possesses people, he slowly acclimates to them. Meaning over time, Mephisto has more and more access to the contract's body until a complete possession occurs. Eventually, Mephisto has full access to their consciousness.

In the case of Faust, Mephisto jumps into Faust's body and uses it as his own. Did Faust's mind and soul die?

No, I don't think so.

I think it melded seamlessly into Mephisto's. Faust's personality and skills become part of Mephisto in a symbiotic relationship. Hence, Mephisto can suddenly speak fluent German like Faust and has an affinity for Tudor-styled clothes. In the Weekend Hero novel, it alludes that there are "two Mephistos" one being the demon and one being the host. At some point in the past, the demon and Faust the man became each other.

Getting back to Mephisto and Shiro.

Mephisto has slowly been possessing Shiro since their contract was consummated. This means that Mephisto was riding along like a passenger periodically throughout Shiro's entire life. Possibly influencing Shiro's words, thoughts and actions. When Shiro has sex with women, Mephisto is right there, no doubt having the experience with him. That's why Mephisto gets so horny reliving Shiro's intimate past. He wasn't just watching, he was an active participant. Shiro's memories are his memories.

This also explains why Shiro doesn't remember sleeping with Yuri. He only kinda remembers, that's because Mephisto was mostly in the driver's seat when it happened. That's why Mephisto was so smug about the pregnancy and acts so damn strange. Yuri didn't just sleep with Shiro, she slept with Meph/Shiro. And yeah, Yuri's Mephisto's type. A beautiful girl with a sad past....yadda yadda.

Now, if that wasn't complicated enough. Satan enters the picture. Did Satan and Yuri sleep together? Maybe, but it's entirely unnecessary. Yuri already had a demon contract with Satan and had that contract since she was a child. This is why Yuri was always defended by blue flames when she was under threat. She was partially possessed by Satan and under his protection and immune to his blue flames. (just an aside, this is why Satan was frantically searching for Yuri during the Blue Night. He wanted to take her body as his own. Both Yuri and Satan could've lived on as one entity by doing so. Satan would have taken on pieces of Yuri's personality and might have wound up half-decent.)

Back to Rin and Yukio.

Rin and Yukio's DNA is super fucked up.

Meph/Shiro slept with Yuri/Satan.

Who got what?

Yukio: Gets his intelligence and cunning from Mephisto. The fact that Yukio's eye acts as a portal to Gehenna is a trait of the Time King. Yukio also has immunity to blue flames from Yuri/Satan and his cut-throat attitude from Shiro. He also looks more and more like Shiro as he gets older, he has also Yuri's eye colour and moles. Yukio is 5'11 tall. Satan and Shiro, being identical Azazel clones are only 5'10. Yuri Egin, is absolutely short probably around 5'3. Mephisto meanwhile, is 6'5. Yukio gained that extra inch from him.

Rin: Looks like a younger version of Shiro, has Yuri's book smarts and loving personality. Has Satan's blue flames and Mephisto's time powers (he just doesn't know it) But the kid can accidentally open portals and undo Mephisto's magic.

But Mephisto alludes to it...

So the question remains. Did Shiro die?

Yes and no.

The night Rin's powers awakened, Mephisto was riding along in Shiro's body. Hence, Mephisto knew all of the conversations between Rin and Shiro that day.

When Satan possessed Shiro the second time, Shiro appears dead. But it could all be an elaborate sleight of hand by Shiro's life partner Mephisto. Mephisto saved him the first time, it only makes sense that he'd save him again.

Plus it doesn't make sense that Mephisto would be so devoted to Shiro for all of those years, put in all of that time and effort to simply cut and run. Shiro belongs to him.

Blue Exorcist 10th anniversary book Q&A session

The 10th anniversary book has a section where Katoh answers 100 questions submitted by fans on Twitter, so here they are translated/paraphrased! May contain manga spoilers up to the recent flashback arc, so be warned.

(Note that I’m playing it very fast and loose here because there are A HUNDRED OF THEM, so not exact wordings, but it should capture the gist. Lemme know if there are any you want elaborated on)

1. Katoh likes the feel of traditional drawing more than digital but is impressed with how far digital has come

2. Meph THOROUGHLY ABUSES spacetime to watch all his shows and ensure that he gets all the merch he wants

3. Did the girls take all of Yukio’s school uniform buttons in middle school? Yes, they did (apparently it’s like A Thing for girls to ask for a button from their crush at middle school graduation, based on some sad movie from the 60s where a guy who got drafted as a kamikaze pilot gave a girl one of his uniform buttons to remember him by)

4. Rin's tail is about a meter long

5. There are tons of servants working at Mephisto's mansion. Belial is in charge of them

6. Katoh borrows from all sorts of neat real locations when making settings

7. Katoh identifies with pretty much all the characters the most! Except Lucifer.

8. Demon designs she's proud of include the impure king and hachirou, pretty much anything that was the main one in an arc

9. Katoh lists a bunch of her favorite musical artists/music she’s listening to recently: King Gnu, Official Hige Dandism, Kenshi Yonezu, BAD HOP, Sakanaction, Keyakizaka 46, Hypnosis Mic, Aimer, B’Z, Queen Bee.

10. Awww the rabbit manga that characters are often reading isn't just Robo to Usakichi, it's an even older one that she drew as a little kid

11. She likes industrial style interior designs

12. Rin and Yukio alternated who got the top bunk growing up, because they couldn't agree on it lol

13. Katoh cares a whole lot about panel layouts and speech bubble positions, might even be her favorite part of the process (it shows!)

4. Katoh does NOT have a mashou, lol

15. Rin has probably been practicing in secret so he can learn to carry stuff with his tail

16. Izumo probably got into shojo manga around 1st grade, her mom had some around the house

17. Specialty dishes: Rin - lots of stuff but especially nabe Yuri - stuff you can throw together quickly Shiro - stuff he learned from Yuri and/or cookbooks, alongside teaching Rin Yukio - Does. Not. Cook.

18. Can't pick a favorite place she's been on research, but there's no place like Japan

19. Kinzou's band isn't currently meeting because demons, but he's probably still thinking of new songs

20. Hardest characters to draw: anyone with detailed flowing hair. Hardest to write for: Lightning and Gedouin. She had to go read books about serial killers specifically for material for Gedouin, lol

21. Suguro actually gets a dorm room to himself, though allegedly Yukio is technically assigned as his roommate, lol. Didn't end up that way what with Yukio being a teacher and also Rin’s whole...situation

22. Shiemi makes some of her own hair accessories! Cute

23. Katoh doesn't mind if you include stuff with fan letters but check with the editor first

24. Time for making each chapter: Planning/storyboarding: 1-5 days. Sketching: 3-5 days. Drawing/inking: the rest. Just...the rest of the time

25. Neither Suguro nor Izumo have dated before and neither is currently dating. But that's probably just because things were hectic for them! It could happen

26. Yukio breaks 5 or 6 pairs of glasses a year, someone get this kid a strap or something

27. How many spare glasses does Yukio have? Check the fanbook lol it's in there (dang it Katoh)

28. The demon she wants us to pay the most attention to is Lucifer. Because plot.

29. What's under the Order's big meeting table? It's a BOTTOMLESS PIT and if you fall in it you DIE that's what makes it COOL (laughs)

30. What are the job requirements for the angelic legion? Literally just Arthur liking you and inviting you to join

31. She WANTS to do more character profiles but just hasn't gotten to it

32. Rin's tail feels like a cat tail, texture wise

33. The "red Assiah fire" is literally just actual fire nothing special

34. Rin's current hair color is light blue fading to white at the ends

35. Thoughts on Rin's growth: she likes that he stays positive in awful situations and she also thinks it's very main character of him to face the past instead of avoiding it

36. Mephisto didn't purposely surround Rin with stuffed animals when he woke up after going crispy. Mephisto's bed is just Like That

37. Kurikara was based on a cool sword she found in a sword book, but that one was technically just a ceremonial sword. The symbol on it us a Sanskrit letter kaan (sp?) associated with Fudou Myouou

38. Kuro can communicate with normal cats and hangs out with them often

39. Sometimes Shiemi's skirt is extra fancy around the hem what's up with that? Apparently it's an optional accessory that comes with the skirts help I haven't noticed this and don't know any fashion terms in any language

40. When coloring, Katoh always tries to have an overall theme in mind ("emphasis on blue" etc) so it comes together in the end

41. Yes the twins are genetically related to Shiro because of Goro (she says they're like his nephews but I say GENETICALLY at least they'd be indistinguishable from his children)

42. Strongest mom of all the strong moms around here? Yuri! Did you SEE her give birth??

43. Are you careful about your own health Katoh-sensei? Not particularly! Her mom has had to bring her food at work sometimes! Don't do this at home kids

44. At the dating events Shura goes to, does she drink cocktails in moderation? Yeah, she probably downplays her normal drinking habits at these things. But normally she's down for just about any kind of drink

45. Lucifer just really likes oysters okay

46. How many pages of manga does Katoh draw in a day? If she's being good about self-care: three. Maximum number ever: TEN

47. Mephisto is one of those folks who can eat like a garbage compactor and never gain weight. Possibly because his body resists that sort of change the same way it resists aging etc

48. First food Rin cooked: fish burger type patty. Yukio's favorite things Rin cooks: fish simmered in soy sauce, yellowtail with daikon radish. It's fish all the way down

49: Did Rin ever get more monthly allowance from Mephisto? It doubled! He gets TWO 2000 yen bills now (rip) [T/N: That's uh, that's USD $37.26 a month or 33.10 euro]

50. Why isn't Rin more popular with the girls? He gets nervous talking to them, plus he's too oblivious to notice even if he DID have some fans

51. Why change Suguro's hair? She gets bored with keeping everything the same, and she wanted a visual representation that he was getting serious and going into kind of a training arc

52. Things Katoh pays extra attention to when drawing: trying to capture the feel of whatever she's drawing (like "that looks warm and soft" or "I bet that guy stinks" cough Lightning cough)

53: Does Rin take after Yuri more? (He's got her eyes!) Katoh tried to draw Yuri so she looks like both twins. Personality, too - Yukio has her smarts and Rin has her optimism

54: Do you ever wanna be like Mephisto? Well she'd like to be able to get away with just ANYTHING EVER, but no, let's not be like Mephisto

55. Konekomaru not only carries around a cat toy in case he meets any cats, he MAKES cat toys to carry around based on what he thinks the cats would like

56. How'd you come up with Shima? Go read the fan book!

57. Do the kids have Twitter/Instagram accounts? Rin - probably not. Konekomaru might be on some social media. Paku and Izumo are totally on instagram

58. Is there something Rin makes that you wish you could try? All of it! That's the whole idea! He's good at cooking!

59. Will we ever have a (G-rated) reveal of what ALL of Mamushi and her family's tattoos look like? Maybe! She'll think about it

60. Does Arthur have a repertoire of different hairstyles? Not really, he just puts some of it up on the top. Heck he might even have people to do that for him

61. If you wrote a shojo manga what would it be about? She'd have to do a lot of research before even coming up with a story, since there are so many style differences between the genres aside from just the subject

62. The other two of Mephisto's top 3 favorite foods: Cup ramen and....f-fried bubblegum?? Is that a THING???

63. Where do you start when drawing a character? Usually the outline of their face but if it's a complex pose/composition she'll start with whatever's in the foreground (like hands)

64. If Katoh could have a familiar, what demon would she choose? Mephisto. As the all-powerful author, she might actually be able to command him as a familiar!

66. If you swapped Yukio and Rin's relationship around what would change? not much, you'd pretty much have Rin going to the Illuminati and Yukio going to the past

67. Top 3 foods/souvenirs to try in Kyushu? Well she doesn't know what’s good CURRENTLY but when she was there she always used to like burdock tempura udon, hakata torimon (a kind of manju with white bean paste inside), and Chikae style cod roe. today I learned Katoh went to high school in Kyushu

68. Katoh listens to music a lot while she's storyboarding, then when she and the assistants are all drawing and inking they put various videos/movies and stuff on in the background

69. For all his hitting on girls, is Shima actually popular with the ladies at all? He's got enough girls in his life that he probably COULD find a girlfriend if he really wanted, but the double agent thing tends to get in the way. He still wouldn't be as popular as Yukio though (side thought/translator’s note: Shima would be proud of being number 69.)

70. Katoh has the ending planned out in a big-picture way, but there are still a few details here and there that she's fretting over

71. It's cute when the boys put their ties over their shoulders when they're working on something! Where'd that come from? She just figured a tie might get in the way and that seemed like a realistic way to get it out of the way

72. Looks like Yukio is getting some facial hair! What about Rin? They're both about the age for it, but maybe Rin can't grow a beard yet. Maybe a little peach fuzz here and there

73. Katoh's favorite blue exorcist merch? There were some exorcist licenses a while back, and the exorcist pins. Basically it's really cool that these little accessories she drew ACTUALLY EXIST NOW, LIKE YOU CAN HOLD THEM IN YOUR HANDS

74. Okay realtalk how long do we have left, I don't want the series to end yet? We're solidly in the second half by now but it's not, like, ABOUT to end yet

75. Katoh would be a Knight meister, based on what characters she likes to play in games and such

76. How many people in the whole exorcism cram school? More than you think! She doesn't give a number but apparently licensed exorcists also attend classes for new meisters, etc, so there's a wide age range attending

77. How's Arthur feel about, like, studying Taming on the way to becoming Paladin? He's at least mostly accepted that you have to use demons to fight demons effectively

78. Konekomaru started wearing glasses in his first year of middle school, so like 7th grade (more recent than I thought!) He has one spare pair, in contrast to Yukio lol

79. Katoh's current obsessions? Ghost/scary stories! She's even been going to live readings of them recently

80. Media Katoh consumes for inspiration? A wide range of foreign teen drama, horror/suspense, shojo manga, light novels, anime, etc. Special focus on things where two boys are in conflict or there are brothers involved

81. If they weren't exorcists what jobs would they have? Rin - chef. Yukio - doctor. Shiemi - uh, florist?

82. Inspiration for the design of True Cross Town? Katoh and her assistants gathered up a bunch of references, picked out stuff they felt matched the tone, and mashed them all up together

83. Did you use any references etc for the school/exorcist uniforms? She says she probably should have but she just kind of made them up before publication

84. Favorite part of drawing? For color pages, picking out a color scheme. For black and white, drawing in all the little details (though she doesn't always get time to lately)

85. Once again confirms the demon kings' weird hair is a representation of their horns. ADDS THAT PEOPLE WHO CAN'T SEE DEMONS CAN'T SEE THE WEIRD HAIR

86. Now that Yukio's at the Illuminati, where's he gonna get his Jump SQ and spare glasses? Well he probably never planned to stay for long, but hey it's a big ship and they might have an optometrist and/or newsstand there

87. Do you base the demon characters on any references etc? Not really, she just gets a general idea of popular demon designs and then makes up her own in her own style

88. Merchandise Katoh personally wants to have made: stuff that an adult could just use in their day to day life. Also, it's not gonna happen, but if her favorite figure brand made AoEx figures she could die happy

89. If Beelzebub's host body was a beautiful woman, how would Shima react? Would the womanizing win out over the bug phobia? Katoh replies that Shima would probably just faint from being near a girl that pretty, before the bugs even got involved

90. Will the twins ever get to smile and eat dinner together again?? We'll just have to wait and see!

91. What do you check at a "scenario check"? what's a scenario check man I dunno They check for people being out of character or the setting feeling off. They had a lot of these checks for the anime, but they also do them for the drama CD, games, and all that other stuff where multiple authors are involved

92. Why does Shura use baldy as an insult for people who are clearly not bald? She feels like they have some kind of metaphorical, mental kind of "baldness" and she's calling them out on it. Whatever that means

93. After Blue Exorcist ends, what do you want to draw next? She has SO MANY IDEAS, SO MANY

94. Did Katoh make up the Shinto chants that, for example, Izumo used against Gedouin? They're assembled from bits of actual Shinto prayers according to what feels right in the scene

95. Yukio reads the Jump SQ, right, and, just hear me out here, he likes gag manga, right? Does this mean he reads Salaryman Yukio? It's something he would read, but let's say that in the AoEx universe there's just a very similar manga that he finds oddly relatable

96. What do Yukio and Shima do in their free time on the Dominus Liminus? oh my god you guys this ship has so many amenities. Yukio probably spends time reading in the library, which they totally have. There's also, like, a gym, and a movie theater, and a THEATER theater, all of which are free. Shima probably hangs out at the pool (!) and goes to the movies, and hits on illuminati girls, lol

97. Easiest character to draw? The ones with boring simple hair, lol. Lightning gets an honorable mention for ALSO not having eyes in most shots, but Rin wins--he was specifically designed to be easy for Katoh to draw because that's what you want in your main character

98. How do demons understand gender? They just possess whatever feels like the best match to how they feel in Gehenna, whether that's a man, or a woman, or a rat, or whatever

99. Where do you start when you're coming up with a story? She starts with character design and how the characters relate to each other. Currently she's just continuing an existing story, so she works on splitting up the overall plot into episodes and fleshing it out with scenes and information about characters

100. When do you feel most happy? She honestly feels like she lives a very happy life overall. Mentions noticing a lot of little things, like how nice her cats' heads smell when she cuddles them or taking a nice cold refreshing drink of water. There's happiness in everything. aww.

Mephisto:

he thinks those pictures are actually really cute! he won’t admit it though; he’ll stare at them and smirk a little, rising one of his eyebrows.

time flies by so fast, and oh the irony, he’s actually a little impressed. i mean you grew up,,, from a little chubby baby to this? damn.

he once thought about using them to blackmail you. he realized it won’t work cus you actually look cute. I can’t say he wasn’t a little disappointed.

he himself doesn’t have that kind of pictures (and thank god, I don't think he’d enjoy seeing them,,) and thinks it's a little bit silly. I mean... he’s seen so many lives be born and die, it’s just doesn’t phase him much.

despite it being another antic of humans, he understands the point of it though; after all, no human is able to see their past, unlike him and pictures are somehow the way to look back at it.

BONUS: Rin! since its a bit too short for me, I'm adding Rin.

Rin:

he absolutely loves your baby pictures! he literally can’t hold his excitement and almost jumps on his chair when you get the album with your old pictures.

Rin loves seeing the pics with your family the most. it automatically makes him really calm and smile softly, reminding him that your family has taken good care of you.

he laughs like crazy at the silly ones, i swear, he even choked on seeing one.

seeing your baby pictures makes him want to have kids. obviously, not right now, but maybe in the future. he’d love to see a small, cute copy of you.

he probably asks for one in order to place it in his wallet.

last song: I’ve been binging Old Wounds by PVRIS bc it gives me big mephirin vibes (speifically from the fic A Nest of Wrens on ao3 lololol). and JOLT by Unlike Pluto bc it reminds me of the Bad Ending I thought of for the BRS sequel fic wherein Abduxuel decides uhhh actually I need some space so I’m breaking off the claim, Samael, srry XD

last movie: Just watched Vivarium with the family and it wasn’t the greatest but I liked the concept.

currently reading: Ahhhhhh I’ve been in the mood for demons doing demonic stuff so I’ve been re-reading Remedy, Unbecoming, and some of my own things on ao3 to get my fix lol I have an actual physical book series I started called the Demon’s Lexicon trilogy that seems excellent so far so for any of my aoex followers, I highly recommend that one :D

currently watching: I just finished Great Pretender on Netflix and holy shit u guys, u guys, it has my ot3 in it!!! Like, this one is everything I wanted out of a fun heist series plus it gave me the suave manipulative character, the edgy kindhearted character, and the feral bastard character as the main trio and I found my new Meph/Rin/Amai ship lmao (also the last main character, Cynthia, fits my oc Abduxuel perfectly so that’s even better bc ot4 ayyyyy). But I’m about to start/finish Gankutsuo next :D

For the fanfic ask~ do you have any head canons for how Nepenthes might have continued if Shiro hadn't kicked the bucket? (Like a Shiro lives au but juicier 😂)

Ooh this is a good one I definitely thought of a continuation (that I’m working on here and there actually!) but so far that remains canon compliant with Shiro dying. If he survived, I think he might find his dynamic with Mephisto transforming again as the twins grow up (likely torn between trying to hope Mephisto has a plan, asking him even more questions about demon things upon Rin’s awakening and how to handle that tactfully, and still dealing with being very mistrustful of Meph and hesitant to let him take the reins, so to speak) I think throughout Nepenthes, Shiro came to the personal conclusion that while Mephisto may not expressly wish ill on humanity or Assiah as a whole, and may indeed be working for its protection, the scale he thinks and operates at is so immense in scope compared to a human’s that coupled with his lack of emotion (and not great track record), he isn’t going to blink at causing harm to people again in the name of progress. Shiro can hack it. I don’t think he’d want to see the twins endure it, though, and all that would cause another bout of contention between the two. However, Meph is clever and knows how to get under Shiro’s skin. When push comes to shove, he’s probably going to find some means to get his way when he really wants it or considers it necessary, and in that case, Shiro’s gonna be collateral damage if it comes down to it. Thank you!! This was really fun to consider and I’m more motivated to work on that epilogue of sorts now :0

Okay, Yukio had awesome moments in this chapter. Love that the action is coming back, not that the past wasn't lively, but this is NEW territory. And I'm am THRILLED he isn't falling victim to being a puppet for the Illuminati like many had feared. We knew he didn't care for either it or the Order, but I honestly thought he'd have stayed docile a bit longer.

Dem Azazel kin, though... Damn.

Lucy looking like a kicked puppy in more ways than one, and that's not even including Homare's ballsy slap.

The interplay between Lightning (love any chapter with him in it <3) and Angel seemed to gloss over the entire divide that erupted between them (on Angel's part, especially) very quickly, but not going to talk about that, either.

I think enough people will talk about that portion: my bigger interest is in the the tail end of the chapter.

So we leave off with a shakey, terrified-from-Mephisto-popping-out-of-nowhere Koneko going with the hilt and scabbard to find Rin via a dresser drawer. Rin, who is still wound up from having "just" lost control after seeing what his infant self did. The hilt and scabbard will most likely help him to contain his inner demon, but nothing is a 100% certainty as Meph told Osho.

Are they speaking of the upcoming battle or Konekomaru's task?

I like that Koneko, one of the people who was most afraid of Rin early on, will probably be the first human to come across him again after he's (sort of) regained his sanity. Shiemi has been the easy default that everyone's been speculating will help him calm down, but she's embroiled in her own issues right now.

Also, is Rin still some time in the past? If so, then Koneko is too.

Call me horrible, but what if it's just as Blue Night is about to shake down and Miwa sees his sect die with his own eyes? Standing next to the friend that almost barbecued him and is having massive control issues.

Or even worse, Rin IS the cause of his sects partial demise and he has to help Rin regain control with the hilt and scabbard, while watching his family and loved ones die by his friend's flames, confirming his worst fears.

The two of them have had such a great, natural friend dynamic (even moreso than than Godaiin) since the fear was set aside, and as ghoulish as it sounds... I kinda want it to happen. Miwa representing human compassion and willingness to forgive.

I go into each new chapter knowing Kato will twist my heart and she has yet to let me down. That face Shiro made after Mephisto said "she was pregnant" is actually hard to look at... Was it really that shocking for him to find that out?

I suppose it was his definite confirmation that Yuri is in great danger? That Satan’s influence over her is greater than he thought, that the balance has tipped (since he previously sort of listened to her)?But there’s something very off about that… “was”.WAS pregnant.The issue here is that we don’t know when exactly this takes place- Could be Mephisto just mentioned this in passing before the whole attempted escape “Oh btw I saw your almost-girlfriend seems the other guy knocked her up lol”… But a lot of people are re-hatching the old theory that maybe, just mayyybe- Satan may not be the father of at least one of the twins. They’re fraternal after all- two eggs, not one.Satan seems kind of angry about her “smelling different” (as in, change in hormones affecting her body odour? Or smelling like… cigarettes, perhaps?)… Shiro however, seems adamant about killing the kid, no matter who’s it is (though he emphasizes it’s Satan’s)… Then again… He only mentions ONE kid. Does he know they are twins or not? It seems he may have already been on mission to fetch the sword when that was discovered…But Satan always acknowledged only Rin as his son, not Yukio. Same for the kings- you never see Meph refer to Yukio as his little brother. Because he doesn’t have the flames? Or because he’s not really Satan’s offspring after all?Sooo many questions!~Stay tuned for the stunning conclusion next chapter :P~

Hi there! So, in the light of the recent Ao no Exorcist chapters and Katou having a solid grasp on her timeline after all, my brain shocked itself enough to produce some serotonin and I decided I’m gonna diverge from my own principles and post this. Brain producing serotonin should be encouraged. Buckle up, everyone bothering to read: this timeline breakdown/fan theory emerged in 2012, when a bored AnE-fan pieced together a few of the plot reveals we’re starting to see now.

Spoiler warning for The End of the Beginning! Though strictly speaking they’re a timeline framework I developed in order to write TEotB, which means they’re gonna drop very soon via the flashback! So it probably isn’t as mind-blowing as it was to me... BUT I DON’T CARE I’ve been waiting 6 years for the content we’re getting right now, 6 years I’ve been on the edge of my seat for this misfit clone dork to finally tell his story and AAAAAH

This is basically a full-body search of the Kyoto arc chapters, 'cause that was the only bit of the past we had back when I started writing. To this day that’s the part of the manga I have the best grasp on. x’D But all those hours paid off, good gods they paid off! This is long. Bear with me, ‘kay? Old-time AnE-fans remember that it was commonly thought the twins were born on Blue Night, much due to the anime: Kyoto Arc said it wasn’t. If you looked carefully, you could figure out that Blue Night was in fact the time of the twins’ conception, not their birth. Though to be absolutely sure, I plotted out the timeline three times and dug up records from a weather station in Kyoto to see if there would have been snow at that time of year in the early to mid 90′s because that’s how goddamn obsessed I am. And if you did figure out that the twins were conceived on Blue Night, you were inevitably sucked into an even more obsessive downward spiral into crazy fan madness because that meant Fujimoto Shiro was sent to steal Kurikara to “kill some kids” before those kids existed even on an embryonic stage.

My original estimate was that the stage had taken 24 years to set up, based on the info in Kyoto Arc, but with Mephisto’s recent director’s cut of how he ghost wrote history that number bumps up to 36 years or potentially even longer.

For reference, the timeline I put together for TEotB plus the fresh dates from the flashback arc: 1977: Mephisto pressures Shiro into promising him a free wish because extorting a kid that’s struggling for his life is an ok move 1984: Satan fails possession for the first time because whoa so many limbs at once 1989: the Myou Dha is struck by disease 1993: Satan figures out how to properly possess someone, that’s Rin’s unrelenting never-give-up attitude right there 1994: after a nine year learning curve on just staying in a body Satan has three PhD’s and ditches school after one year of education - guess possessing a body really is a difficult thing to pull off huh 1995: Shiro unwillingly becoming the caretaker of orphans: part I 1996: not yet confirmed but Saburota’s first meeting with Lucifer/Asylum is probably now Also 1996: Satan returns to Section 13 with a reclamation claim on that crap body they sold him 1996-1997 (somewhere around New Year’s, I estimate): Shiro, who was an Upper First Class exorcist at the time, cures Myou Dha and oh is that a sword in your pocket or are you just happy to return to your boss after a successful mission? 1997 (probably mid-to-late March): Blue Night sucked for everyone, but at least Shiro and Tatsuma got promotions - yay 1997: Shiro unwillingly becoming the caretaker of orphans: part II 2003: when you’re a cursed, massacred and financially broke sect like Myou Dha, there’s few options but to join the Order of the True Cross to stay afloat 2005: Saburota recruits Mamushi to spy by raising suspicions against Mephisto ‘cause really, that ain’t hard 2013: a giant pile of shit appears in Kyoto and unleashes destruction on its surroundings and for once it isn’t Mephisto

The manga and the timeline are pretty self-explanatory so what I wanna stress here is what happened 24 years ago, in 1989, ‘cause that’s something Katou hasn’t touched upon yet and it’s really fun except for those involved. In 1989, a disease starts plaguing Myou Dha and the symptoms are identical to what you get from exposure to the miasma from the Impure King’s Eyes. It seems to be a very local problem, as we don’t hear of any epidemic in the rest of Kyoto. Did the seal on the Right Eye spring a leak? Nope. Because the Eye wasn’t there.

We haven’t seen the shrivelled up bit of IK cause any trouble - not saying it couldn’t, but it seemed like that one hadn’t been active much for the past 150 years and it had been constantly monitored by the High Priest. I cross-referenced with the dates given in the new flashbacks but the outbreak doesn’t coincide with any boost of demonic activity related to Satan’s progress. So? The disease in Kyoto is its own separate disaster, and it’s most likely engineered. Let’s work our way back from the present to see how Mephisto set up this stage~ Mephisto knew of Saburota’s plan to unleash IK, and was all cool with that ‘cause hey, good opportunity to test Rin’s flame, build some team spirit, power up Bon, etc. For that reason he decided to move the Right Eye from his own keep to Myou Dha’s: if Saburota had been able to steal both of them from True Cross he wouldn’t have needed the pit stop at the Kyoto Office. He would have revived IK straight away, and even Mephisto couldn’t have motivated sending a bunch of kids into that chaos. So, move the Eye to a secret strategic location in Kyoto and force Saburota into jumping through a couple of extra hoops to get it. The Eye was moved in 2003 or thereabouts: this coincides with Myou Dha joining the Order, and makes perfect sense. The relic has ties to their sect, and it’s kinda fair to give them something back since Meph indefinitely borrowed their main relic, and now that they’re part of the Order and all - yada yada, smoke screens. Mephisto gave them the relic to set Saburota up, but not until he had the means to also give Saburota a trail to follow. Our fav Uncle Goat approached Mamushi, his student, in 2005 and recruited her to get the Right Eye. He probably thought he was cleverly working around Mephisto’s attempt to prevent theft, but if we think about it: who gave Saburota the opportunity to manipulate her in the first place? It is much easier to get your hands on an impressionable young Myou Dha kid if the Myou Dha kids attend the school where Saburota teaches. But why would they? When their families are very competent exorcists on their own and they’re used to keeping to themselves and...

Keeping to yourself is only an option so long as you can survive by yourself, and from 1989 on Myou Dha couldn’t. But Granpa Suguro, being as stubborn as he is, has refused any modern/outside help for 7 bloody years. This disease is weird for several reasons. Its localised spread, for one; its similarity with the Eye mashou when there is no Eye present; the way it vanishes and is never heard of again after Shiro’s visit; the suspiciously good timing. We now know Mephisto is aware of the future to a certain extent - we saw that confirmed when he set Shiro up with that promise. That was the last doubt removed from my theory about the Kyoto disease, so here we are. Satan hadn’t even manifested with a consciousness yet but Mephisto had his sights on Kurikara and Myou Dha’s cooperation in 1989. He is a man of sophistication, so he takes the “if the mountain won’t come to Muhammad, Muhammad must come to the mountain“ approach: he used the Eyes to orchestrate an outbreak that would force the sect to reach out to True Cross - the biggest, most knowledgeable exorcist organisation around - for aid. Because the alternative would be to smash in there and outright steal the sword and nobody would send their kids to your organisation after that. But it didn‘t work. Granpa Suguro refused to follow script and so the years went by, Satan gained consciousness, grew intelligent, grew bored, oops there goes the Asylum ceiling, jfc Suguro how many more have to die before you just play along like a good boy...? In the end Mephisto had to deploy Plan B: screw it, theft it is. If Muhammad won’t go to the goddamn mountain I’m gonna drop the mountain right on Muhammad’s stubborn head.

Of course this means fucking things up for Shiro, ‘cause that’s just how these things go when you’re running a tight deadline getting the Antichrist(s) a birthday present. Also it’s fun.

This frame says everything, really. xD Come now, how would you expect these people to trust you, and develop a friendly attitude to the Order, if you barge in there on your black-ops mission like a humanoid battleship, grab their relic and ditch the scene? Bad PR, very bad PR. Buuut if you’re injured enough that you can’t make that immediate escape, and you just happen to know how to cure this very specific disease that never flares up again, which you can contract from only 2 items in the world, of which both are owned by the snake-tongued sass ball you are enslaved by work for...? What a fortunate coincidence, what a golden opportunity to create some debt gratitude and-

Nevermind...

I headcanon that if Granpa Suguro hadn’t died on Blue Night, Mephisto would have set him on fire personally for being such a roadblock to his plans. After Blue Night Myou Dha was decimated, bankrupt, thought by the population to be cursed - what is a poor sect to do? Who could possibly help? Oh wait wasn‘t there some guy a while back, y’know, that exorcist dude who came crashing in and saved the lives of our families and friends? He seemed to know what he was doing, think we could ask him? So the take-away from this is If not for that disease, if not for Mephisto’s misinformation and Shiro’s break-in, Myou Dha would never have joined True Cross. The Right Eye would never have been kept in Kyoto, there had been no Myou Dha kids at the Academy for Saburota to recruit, and the cram school kids would never have been in Kyoto to fight the Impure King. And also that Mephisto is a fabulous bastard and a pure joy to write! ☆

Okay I hope this isn’t rude or mean to any shippers but I really hope you can help me figure something out. And that is, why is it that I cannot ship and honestly very heavily dislike the thought of Mephisto and Shiro being in a relationship due to their relationship when Shiro was growing up and Shiro’s upbringing. But I have no issue with MephistoxArthur and really enjoy the pairing despite Arthur probably having a simialrish upbringing. (I’m sorry if I’m not making sense)

Personally I’m not too big of a fan of MephShiro myself (but I don’t hate it either) because I preferred the idea of them just being asshole friends. The whole cliche of “secret past lovers” is so overdone and yknow, he’s dead already. Plus when it’s not that fans make Meph more a part of Shiro’s life, which he never was, especially since Yukio only knew Meph through his training as an exorcist and Rin never knew him at all...I really doubt Mephisto would want to really start any sort of family deal. They were friends, but even not that much. They both conflicted so I could never see them forming a relationship that would actually work. It’s more a boss/underling kind of deal than anything.

Also I’m starting to enjoy the idea that he really did love Yuri and never really moved on past her death, it looks like there was something like that since how he was when Shura tried to seduce him.

Hoo boy, I hope I don’t get chewed out by MephShiro fans either. >~>

But I’m glad you like MephArthur! Personally I like it because they’re more of an aesthetically pleasing couple, both in terms of design and personality. They’d just look really nice together. ^v^

So there's this post i saw making fun of how Meph always says he's a demon and how he can't feel emotions, and Rin basically says, "are you sure You're not continuously saying that just to convince yourself that," .... what are your thoughts on that? Do you think maybe he does feel emotions he just doesn't want accept it so he pushes feelings away and claims demons don't feel?

THIS. I think that Mephisto does indeed feel emotions, but he just doesn't truly know/acknowledge/understand what they are, and how they should feel like.

Behind that facade of his, is someone who is mysterious. Many would even say, dark and possibly evil. I agree. He has his moments in both the manga and anime where he talks about his plans, and the whole cheerful Mephisto that we know and love (hate) disappears. I read from somewhere that Mephisto is capable of feeling love, but he won't believe in it unless someone is willing to prove it to him. This just makes his character even more interesting. I really do think that is possible for him to feel emotions. Our poor Mephy just doesn't want to accept it, due to his nature and experience.

Mephisto the big bad (notes)

Rambling thoughts....i drank a bunch of Quebec maple liquor.

These things happen.

OK.

So, if Mephisto turns out to be the big bad. He’s probably going to need a new body. I’m convinced Shura might be that body.

Mephisto is probably going to use Shura’s attachments to Rin and Yukio as leverage. Leverage to get Shura to a sign demon contract with him. Once that happens she belongs to Mephisto. Just like Shiro, that poor sod that came before her.

Shura’s a perfect vessel for Mephisto with a stong body and the ability to take on the powers of powerful demons, plus she has an empty demon sword that can be used as an additional horcrux for Mephisto. He’s already gifted her some sort of magical scabbard and put her in charge of his duties. So it’s already in the works.

But why else would Mephisto choose Shura?

Rin and Yukio could never hurt her.

If Mephisto possessed Shura the boys couldn’t bring themselves to destroy him. Yukio is secretly (or not so secretly) in love with Shura romantically and Rin treats her more like a big sister. A big sister he’s willing to fight to the death for.

Mephisto wants to develop these complex emotions between Shura and the boys for his own protection. He’s not stupid.

I thought for the longest time he’s using love to save Rin and Yukio. Setting up situations to make Shura feel love for the boys so she will help protect them. But what if his motivations are much, much darker.

Even though Meph is my favourite character, i’m fully believe him capable of a wide range of distasteful things. The Mephisto/Shura thing could end quite poorly. What if he’s using love against her to protect himself and protect his legacy in Assiah.

Totally possible.

(CRACK THEORY)

Who shot Mephisto?

YUKIO DID?

Yukio knows all about the Kamakushi key, not only that but he’s trigger happy. When Yukio gets angry he shoots stuff. Maybe he shot Mephisto out of pure spite and out of revenge for everything he did to them. Mephisto fully expected Yukio to shoot him the first time, but somebody beat him to it.

But was it Yukio from the future?

Mephisto is surprised, it hasn’t happened before. That being said....it was the shooter he intended. Just from a different timeline.

Honestly Mephisto shouldn’t be surprised at all. He’s a bastard. Yukio probably felt a lot of gratification from making the shot.

SO WHAT ELSE MAKES MEPHISTO THE BIG BAD?

HE WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO WIN.

Once he gets rid of Lucifer and Satan, he can rule over Assiah.

1) Mephisto knew Satan would show up in Assiah when he created section 13. Maybe not at first, but once it happened he had multiple opportunities to change the timeline and rid himself of Satan.

But Mephisto didn’t...

Instead he continued with the macabre and morally destitute experiments. He needed a force stronger than himself to take out Lucifer. Satan showing up in Assiah was great timing. Satan was his trump card, Mephisto just needs to trick him. (he’s working on that side hustle.)

On top of that, Mephisto created himself an army of clone exorcists (Shiro, Angel, Abel and probably Lightning). All of these creations are pawns in his game. He wouldn’t hesitate for a minute to sacrifice them. (Luckily Lightning is cunning and just as morally destitute as Mephisto. That might save his ass.)

(Plus, remember Yuri and Shemihaza? They give Lucifer and Satan shit for wanting to kill things in cold blood and choosing who lives and dies. Yet, Mephisto isn’t innocent either. The blood isn’t literally on his hands, but he’s still the ringmaster. He’s no better, honestly. I guess you could say he’s just trying to survive and defeat Lucifer for the greater good. That his sacrifices are justified....but still, Mephisto is capable of some seriously evil shit.

Other Shitty things Mephisto has done.

2) Mephisto manipulates Shiro, Yuri and Satan into some sort of love triangle to make Rin and Yukio. The failsafe to get rid of Satan when he was done with him. (I don’t know how it exactly went down...but I know he orchestrated it.)

3) Yuri had to go through that horrible birthing process to give birth to Rin and Yukio and then she died in the end. Yuri’s entire situation was tragic and horrible.

4) Mephisto knew the blue night would happen and hundreds of people would be killed.

5) Mephisto got Rin and Yukio to free Shura from Hachiro’s curse, only to enslave her to himself. That’s so low.

6) Mephisto adopted Izumo’s sister to takara corp’s CEO and she doesn’t remember her.

7) Mephisto is the director of a religious school and gave Shima pornography. (Okay...this one does make me laugh.)

8) Mephisto tricked Shiro on more than one occasion. Like..doesn’t this woman look like him? If Meph decided to tranform into a hot woman...this would be her.

Okay now that I’ve had the day to piece together my cracked out Ao No Exorcist dream from last night, I’m ready to share it:

Essentially, chapter 100 was going to be a big event, like, super big, so big that instead of it being a manga chapter, it was going to be a full 60 MINUTE TV SPECIAL. And even more interesting, I was one of the only few people who got to watch it for some reason?? Anyway, the day came and I was so excited to see it and then blog about it so everyone could know how the “chapter“ panned out. The episode/chapter started out surprisingly normal in that it started off with Kaneki Rin waiting to go back in time to see his past. He activated the little infinity key Meph gave him and zapped back in time...

And this is where it gets strange: In the process of Rin poofing back in time Lewin, Shura, and my conscience?? jump in the time warp too. All of the sudden I find myself in some weird basement of a nursing home with plastic tables and chairs, your grandma’s couch™, and Christmas lights decorating the room. Confused, I look around to find that both Lewin and Shura became kid versions of themselves??? I could not find Rin either. Suddenly a crowd of Illuminati goons were in the room. Only, they weren’t the typical Illuminati goon, all these guys had black clothing and black capes with sequin flames(?) sewed onto them they basically looked like the typical villain team in a Pokemon game.

Piecing all of this information together I decided we must’ve zapped back in time to a previous Illuminati hide-out. And then I realized...WAIT I CAN SEE LUCY IN PERSON???? I immediately go look for him..and found him...outside in the dark by a tree... floating in a standing position...and circling around Rin...I guess to keep him contained?? I’m not sure, but he looked like he was a video game character that was hardcore glitching atm. It was so fucking funny I wish I could project that image to you all.

Now it gets a little fuzzy... Because of my strange Lucy encounter I come back inside to find lil’ Lewin and Shura causing havoc by jumping around on that couch I mentioned before. I guess the goons finally figured out we were intruders as they were attempting to attack us... Rin must’ve somehow gotten free because Shura, Lewin, and myself found him in the next room over rescuing/hugging a little kid version of Yukio and getting ready to zap back into the present. (No doubt this portion of the dream must’ve been inspired by @vongrell ‘s amazing art since I was looking at it yesterday- seriously go check it out!)

After being zapped back to the present I find myself back in my house. Excited to tell everyone about the “new chapter“ I go into the living room and lo and behold I find @bigbrolucy dissociating sitting in my dad’s old recliner..only it was floating for some reason. And in case you were curious, Omen, my brain decided dream you was essentially Lewin only with thicker/curlier hair? Upon making the discovery all they said was “’sup” and I just accepted it and moved on to telling them about my ANE experience. I then proceeded to go to the kitchen pantry and grab a fuck ton of [supposedly my] shirts that either were black and had a tiger face with “Chihuahua“ written in gold on them or were green and featured puppies and/or floofy goats with “video game“ written in blue on them. I brought them all back to the living room and for some reason decided to bury poor Omen in them. (Not violently, I just kind of threw like all 40 of them on them for no good reason?? XD)

And then I woke up. I looked at the clock, it was 8:07am. I stared at the ceiling for a moment and suddenly had a flashback to that wonderful image of Lucy glitching the fuck out. Cracking up, I thought to myself- “yup..this one is going in the vault.” THE END
