Norma Fox (il cognome da nubile è Nielsen), conosciuta anche come La Norma, di origine danese, è stata una grande trapezista che si è esibita in tutta Europa prima di trasferirsi negli Stati Uniti con il marito, il francese André W. Fox, nel 1949. Nel 1951 La Norma fu selezionata per lavorare come controfigura per l'attrice Betty Hutton nel film vincitore dell'Oscar "The Greatest Show on Earth". La Norma si è ritirata nel 1974 e ora vive a Sarasota, in Florida, nel 1989 è stata inserita nella 'Ring of Fame' per i suoi successi nel circo.

Nata a Randers, nello Jutland, il 9 febbraio 1926, Norma Nielsen era la figlia dell'operatore cinematografico Laurits Nielsen e di sua moglie Magda. Fin dalla tenera età, insieme ai suoi fratelli, si esibiva in spettacoli circensi nel loro cortile. Quando aveva 14 anni, fu notata alla scuola di ballo locale da Emilie Altenburg che, insieme a sua figlia, si esibiva in un numero circense pubblicizzato come le Florita Sisters. Dopo aver discusso le sue intenzioni con i genitori di Norma, la Altenburg portò la bambina a Copenaghen dove la formò per diventare una trapezista in condizioni rigorose, ai limiti del tollerabile. PER VEDERE IL VIDEO CLICCA QUI Norma fece il suo debutto al Varieté Maxim in Randers e ricevette il suo nome d'arte La Norma quando, all'età di 16 anni, si esibiva alla Scala di Copenaghen. Durante l'occupazione tedesca della Danimarca, la Altenburg portò Norma in Norvegia e poi in Svezia dove si esibì nel Cirkus Altenburg e nel Cirkus Scott. Dopo la guerra, nel 1946 insieme alla Altenburg, Norma fece una tournée in Danimarca con il Circus Belli. Lì incontrò André Fox, suo futuro marito, che l'ha incoraggiò a staccarsi dalla Altenburg. La coppia si trasferì in Francia dove Norma eseguì un numero aereo sospeso dalla Torre Eiffel.

Tale esibizione le fruttò un contratto con Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, portando la coppia negli Stati Uniti. Norma ha lavorato poi con RBB&B dal 1949 al 1951. Nel 1951, fece da controfigura a Betty Hutton nel film The Greatest Show on Earth. Per i successivi 20 anni, ha continuato ad esibirsi in altri circhi americani. Il collega trapezista Tony Steele ha riconosciuto di essersi unito al circo dopo essersi ispirato proprio a lei.

Dopo che suo figlio Gilbert rimase paralizzato in un incidente in scooter, si ritirò dal circo nel 1974. Il suo ultimo numero è stato lo "Space Act". In questo numero era su un unico trapezio appeso a un satellite spaziale rotante attaccato a un razzo. Dopo essere andata in pensione Norma ha insegnato molti tipi di trapezio a giovani studenti, ha formato giovani artisti fino alla metà degli anni '80.

Ora vive nella comunità circense di Sarasota, pur non provenendo da una famiglia circense, La Norma ha arricchito tutti gli artisti circensi che ha incontrato sul suo cammino e ha insegnato agli altri come è stato insegnato a lei.
