My Dream Drake

Whether or not the Darkwing Duck reboot will be a reality, I created my own vision of what Drake Mallard could look like in another reimagining.

I used references from Jim Starling and Drake Mallard from “DuckTales (2017)” to design him.

Both these characters’ physical attributes are equally remarkable to me, despite their vast age differences.

Even though I don’t have a complete outline for the character or how the show would be rebooted, I came up with some key notes that stay true to the Drake Mallard character with a few changes.

His age at the start of the show is between 30 and 40, with a few visible head creases.

While he is older than Launchpad this time, their friendship is mutual and heartwarming. Drake never calls him sidekick or patronizes him in anyway.

A theater geek in high school.

Has a collection of playbills from Broadway musicals.

His EGO is bigger than his entire body, leading him to screw up occasionally.

Adopting Gosalyn will give him something to center and someone to love other than himself.

Chunky and noisy, but with stars in their black feathers, they spring from the telephone wire and instantly

they are acrobats in the freezing wind. And now, in the theater of air, they swing over buildings,

dipping and rising; they float like one stippled star that opens, becomes for a moment fragmented,

then closes again; and you watch and you try but you simply can't imagine

how they do it with no articulated instruction, no pause, only the silent confirmation that they are this notable thing,

this wheel of many parts, that can rise and spin over and over again, full of gorgeous life.

Ah, world, what lessons you prepare for us, even in the leafless winter, even in the ashy city. I am thinking now of grief, and of getting past it;

I feel my boots trying to leave the ground, I feel my heart pumping hard. I want

to think again of dangerous and noble things. I want to be light and frolicsome. I want to be improbable beautiful and afraid of nothing, as though I had wings.

I will never in my life get over how much better in every way Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter is than Mads Mikkelson’s.

Hopkins is having fun. He’s playing. He’s talking shit. He jump scares Starling and Graham because he thinks it’s funny. Because it gives him power in a situation where he’s powerless. In two movies he’s probably onscreen for 20 cumulative minutes, but he’s somehow still a main character. He’s magnetic.

After powering through three seasons of Hannibal I remember plot relevant things that Mikkelson did, but not a word of what he said.

(This is not entirely Mads’ fault. Hannibal the show prioritized elegance and sleekness, in the style of a regional theater saying they’re going to do groundbreaking performances this season and then spending a lot of money on another production of Macbeth where this time the witches get their tits out)

Anyway I love the cool and collected villain as much as the next goth but emotions aren’t minimalist. Let characters be messy. Let them out of their sleek plastic boxes sometimes. Let actors play.

“The Starling Girl,” with music by Lord Huron, opens today, but only on the coasts, as far as I know.

I ran into a neighbor Thursday who is lobbying to get the movie shown at the nearby single-screen Sun Theater in Williamston - the kind of place where the people who own the theater also sell the tickets, pop the popcorn and run the projector. We’ll see about that.

Lord Huron’s front man, Ben Schneider, wrote the score for the full-length movie, which had its premier at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Directed by Laurel Parmet, “The Starling Girl” tells the story of 17-year-old Jem Starling (Eliza Scanlen). Raised in a fundamentalist Christian community in Kentucky, she’s torn between her piety and her natural human desires.

Meanwhile, Lord Huron’s “Ace Up My Sleeve,” a song written for the movie, will be released next Friday. Take a listen by clicking on the photo.
