Dance with me (Charles Leclerc)
Although Ferrari's strategy is going somewhere, albeit all over the place, Charles and Y/N are quite sure about their feelings towards eachother
Note: english is not my first language. It took me a bit but I've managed to do a part 2 to Stomp your foot. Also @ ferrari, get your thoughts together so that, while the boys get the results they deserve, I can write about good things too, please and thank you. There is also a little Mariana Zapata reference, if you know you know 😏
Thank you so much to everyone who likes and reblogs, your feedback is appreciated 🤍 and I'm taking requests so if you have any ideas or concepts you want to share, feel free to do so as I'll try to get to them the best I can!
Tw: Ferrari's season, curse words, mentions of gender inequality
"Y/N is on her way here to spend the day with us", Charles reminded his family as they tidied the table from breakfast. He messaged you when you posted an Instagram story of the beach view from the room you were staying in Ibiza, asking if the meet up he proposed in Hungary was still up, the two of you finding a day to get together after your friend had gone home and before you left for Maranello. "So we're finally meeting the Y/N you're always talking about, I feel like I know her already", and Charles rolled his eyes at his brother Lorenzo's antics, "It's true, it's always Y/N this, Y/N that, oh Y/N likes that ice cream flavour too, and I stopped listening to you talk about her a long time ago", he finished as he headed upstairs, and Charles was about to bite back with a reply when he heard the doorbell, heading there to open to, he assumed, let you in.
You parked the rental car in front of the house Charles had sent you the address for, checking the door number on the message before ringing in, hearing footsteps on the garden path before Charles opened the small gate, "Hi Y/N, glad you could join us", he greeted with a kiss on each of your cheeks, "Hey Charles, thank you for the invite once again", you smiled as he stretched his arm so you entered the property, excusing yourself in through the open front door and taking in the house before Arthur's footsteps down the stairs caught her attention, making her turn her body to see the younger driver, "here's my favourite engineer, it's a shame Ferrari swooped you from the academy", Arthur said as he greeted you the same way his brother did. "You two know eachother?", Charles asked, the confusion clear by his expression, "I filled in for Prema Racing when one of their engineers was unable to attend for two races", you explained, "you're not the first Leclerc I'm ordering around", you giggled as Charles took the information in, "you never mentioned it when I talked about her", Charles said, and despite feeling like he might have outed himself, Arthur smirking as he saw his brother put his foot on his mouth, he simply shrugged, "there are many Y/N in the world, how could I know?", he teased as you walked into the outside area, "And here's another person who has ordered Leclercs about for a while, Y/N, this is my mother Pascale, mum, this is Y/N". "Hello, it's so nice to meet you. Thank you for welcoming me here", you said as she greeted you with a tight hug, "hi dear, it's so nice having you here, I'm the one who's glad you could join us. If you ever need tips on making them listen to you just let me know", she winked, "Charles isn't the problem, it's the other men that usually don't listen to what I say", you replied as you watched her head to the big window that led into the kitchen, "Can I offer you anything from the kitchen, darling? Maybe a drink...?". Taking the box from your tote bag, you explained its content "I'm good thank you! When my friend was here, we went to this shop that had these cakes with cookie ice cream in them and I thought I'd bring some for you", you offered as Pascale went to grab the box, thanking you before heading inside to place it in the fridge, "I told you you didn't need to bring anything", he said, "like I ever listen to you", you teased, "You really should, I have some great ideas and things to say", he said before his older brother made his presence known as he laughed, "you really don't sell yourself short, not at all. Hi, I'm Lorenzo, the older brother", he said as he greeted you.
You placed your tote bag on one of the sunloungers like Charles told you to before he grabbed a some beach rackets, "care to join us for a game? I promise we will go easy on you", he smiled as you stuck your tongue out at him, leaving your sandals as the four of you headed to the large grass area.
Lorenzo teamed up with Arthur while you and Charles made the other team as the net delimited the area for each pair. When Charles said they were very competitive between them, you'd never think it was like this. The balls were hit with great force, given that you were playing with athletes, but you dealt with athletes since you joined race early on, you knew competitiveness at a high level but this was beyond that, every now and again hearing muttered brotherly offenses between the brothers whenever one of them scored a point, Arthur and Lorenzo (only?) glaring at you when you scored the points as Charles highfived you. After playing for hours, you and Charles managed to win two out of the three games they had set to play after the first one ended with a one point difference between the duos, Charles hugging you while he lifted your body off the floor, "put me down", you squealed as he finally complied, "See? I know how to order you about", and little did you know he would probably do anything you asked him to if it meant you kept that beautiful smile that was now on your face forever.
"How about a swim now? I could use it to cool off", Lorenzo suggested as you grabbed the rackets and a ball to place them back in their bag that was next to the sunlounger you had placed your things on, seeing Pascale removing a cover up she was wearing so that she could join, "Why do I have the feeling that if I wasn't playing with them that would've been much uglier?", you said to her as you saw Arthur purposely throwing a ball he found at Charles and then pretending it was unintentional, "Oh definitely, yesterday Charles lost and he didn't speak to them for an hour, they take these games very seriously!", she chuckled as she made her way to get in the water. You rummaged your bag for a little pouch you had brought, reapplying the sun protection lotion on your face, Charles snickering at your white face, "what? At least I know how to behave in the sun and, as much as I like to work for Ferrari, I don't need to sport their colours all the time", you teased back as you rubbed the product in, checking your reflection in the window to see if you had done it properly, you hands moving to the button of your shorts so you could undo it and get ready to join the guys in the water, taking your flowy top off too.
You looked really good, Charles' eyes scanning your body as you folded your clothes neatly on the end of the lounger, the dark forest green of your swimsuit hugging your body complimenting your gorgeous figure, making the Formula 1 driver gulp, his brothers noticing his reaction and chuckling, the snickering between them going unnoticed by their middle brother as he watched your strong legs strut their wait into the steps, "Anyone seeing you would think you work for Aston Martin instead", he somehow broke the transe he was in, not wanting you to feel uncomfortable from his stare, "Seb is a good man, after all he was the one to teach me where the good coffee was at Maranello", you said and Charles looked at you, "Seb too? Really?", he mused, "I have been working in Ferrari longer than you have, I know many many people", you said once you submerged your head to wet your hair for a much needed dip, coming back up and smiling back at Charles as he shook his head. You were going to be the death of him, that much he was sure.
You were helping Pascale finish setting the table when Lorenzo handed you a tray with the bowl with the meat for the grill, "Can you bring this to Charles, please? And maybe stay in there with him and make sure he doesn't let it burn, we have everything under control here and you're our guest, too", he smiled as you excused yourself and made your way to a shirtless Charles that was lighting the fire in the grill, "the meat is here", you said simply as you watched him, "Shouldn't you put a t-shirt on? You could hurt yourself", you expressed your worry, not that you wanted him to cover his beautiful and well shaped torso, but safety came first. Smiling at you, "I think I can handle it", he said as he managed to get the fire to last for a little bit before it started to die down, "wait, there's salt here, let me just", you said grabbing the bowl from the tray and taking a bit on your hand before throwing it in the wood sticks, the flames livening up again, "You're a do it all, aren't you?", he smiled as he poked at the embers a bit, "in my case, you have to learn how to do it otherwise people will treat you like a child and assume you're a fluke, unfortunately", you reasoned while looking at what he was doing, not wanting to look at his face after you blurted that without thinking much first, but he picked up on it. Grabbing the the tongs to place the meat on the grill, "How come?", he wondered simply, "when you're the only woman in the middle of men, it can get quite intimidating until you find your ground and learn to stomp your foot. They're always assuming I need to be helped and that's the only way I'll get anywhere. And I haven't. I got into Ferrari with my hard work, my own blood, swear and tears, and I pushed through everything and every occupation to be able to become a strategist", you explained, the outskirts of what you had read after the Hungary GP about your position on the team taking a toll on you. You could only handle so much.
Checking the meat, Charles turned to you, tapping your arm so you could look at him, "I have been in the business for a good time too, and maybe you know a lot of people too", he tried to bring a smile to your face, succeeding as your lips curved upwards, "but trust me when I say that I never thought less of you because you're a woman, I actually think you fit really nicely in the team and there have been so many improvements that were all your doing", he said, the genuineness in his voice making the words sink into you easily, the butterflies on your belly dancing a melody of their own. "Thank you, that means a lot coming from you", you nudged his side, wanting nothing more than to hug him but refraining from doing so as you were still tiptoeing around your feelings for him, sometimes feeling like they were reciprocated but the nagging option of it affecting your job still present on your thoughts.
Pascale was looking at you as she placed the drinks on the table, noticing how her son's body language showed some hesitation to touch you and how you nudged him, seeming to want more out of it before resuming to laughing along to something Charles said, the smile on his face bigger than ever, "those two are taking their sweet time admiting what we all know", Lorenzo mentioned, Arthur humming in agreement as he placed the bread basket on the table.
.
"But why did it happen like that? That's my only question", your assertive tone was heard in the room, not rasing your voice to be heard as you knew that it was not how things worked out for the best, "we win as a team and loose as a team, we fail and conquer together. We all know that what happened out there today was not what we work for. Carlos deserves more. Charles deserves more. Ferrari deserves more. Tifosi deserve more. So much more. So I think we should really think about what we need to do to make it better. I've expressed my concerns and ideas and I hope you, too, think about it and bring them to the next meeting", you finished your intervention in the debrief meeting.
After a mixed feelings Dutch GP for the team, positive since Charles had managed to get on the podium but negative about the way things were handled for Carlos, everyone was quiet as they tidied things around the garage once you left that tense debrief, heading to the hospitality's balcony to get some fresh air and gather your thoughts. Hearing footsteps, you look over to see both Ferrari drivers, "Hey Y/N", Carlos said, "Hey guys", you replied, "Again, sorry we couldn't do anymore", you honestly said, upset at how the afternoon turned out despite a slight happiness that Charles was back on the podium, even though not in the spot you knew he wanted to be. "The guys, they were showing us the recording you have from what you discuss in the pitwall. And thank you", Carlos said looking at you and seeing in your eyes that you knew what he meant. When you noticed the rear tyre missing, you were pissed off, looking at the situation with your fingers rubbing circles on your head, the words just coming out of you as you defended Carlos and talked to his side of the pitwall, no one being able to tend to your questions and back to the pit stop area, groaning as you looked at that mess, your mumbled words after he managed to finally go caught by the system showing just how disappointed and frustrated you were about the decisions that were made, "Isa is downstairs, so I'll get going. See you guys later", the spanish driver said as he waved goodbye. Sitting next to you, Charles noticed your clear distress, "you're not the only person making the decisions, you shouldn't be taking all of this on your shoulders", he said, despite he himself feeling all the emotions about his own race, "fuck, this is just so hard, week after week, as you guys must feel it even worse, that we're failing you", you let out, taking Charles' honest silence as an (rightfully so) agreement, "we have Monza next week, and I'm going to make sure everyone in this garage knows what they're doing, I promise you", you said as Charles grabbed your hand in his as he squeezed them together, wanting to share some of your hope and resilience.
.
Monza really was a whole different atmosphere, the fans that gathered making it an unique race. You were putting on your yellow t-shirt for the celebration weekend when you noticed both drivers in their new suits that matched everyone else's tops, "you guys really look like minions, people on the Internet are right this time. I'm sorry, but that's the first thing I thought of", you said, "But we are handsome minions", Carlos said, noticing your eyes checking Charles out, "the handsomest", you replied, your eyes kept on the monégasque's face before you excused yourself and let them recover between the free practice sessions, Carlos speaking up as soon as you were out of earshot, "Honestly mate, if you don't make a move on her, I will make it for you. You guys are so into eachother it's actually insane", before he sipped on his water, Charles' eyes following you was you moved some pieces around.
.
Qualifying always got your nerves going, already being known in the paddock by how you could never sit for long during the three sessions, "Do you think we can get them both on the podium today?", Xavi said while you looked at the data, the beggining of Q3 approaching, "at this point I feel like if we can, Max is quick but maybe Charles could have an advantage, because looking here", you said as you pointed to some graphs and the notes you had scribbled down.
When Charles and Carlos were in the first two spots, you started feeling hopeful that, despite still having to work with penalties for the race the next day, the pace seemed to be there, your heart thumping on your chest as you tapped your foot nervously as Charles' data improved after the warm up lap, and when Xavi yelled "And P1!" into the radio, you did your happy dance, not having a care in the world about what others thought as you watched the Tifosi erupt in cheer.
Team dinner was going really well, everyone happy with how the day had gone and feeling hopeful for the race as they dug into their plates, the nights chill still not bringing the mood down. When nearly everyone decided to go inside for a liquor the owner of the restaurant offered, only Charles, Carlos, Isa, Xavi and you stayed behind, speaking until Isa noticed how you and Charles weren't particularly interested in whatever they were talking about and started having a conversation of your own, "I need to get something from the counter, amor, can you come with me?", she asked as her foot nudged Xavi's, the two men getting the hint as they left the table, you and Charles carrying on your conversation until one of your favourite songs rang through the outside speakers, "C'mon", you said, getting up, "dance with me, we need to celebrate today", you explained as you pulled Charles by his arm, your hand holding his as he spun you around, the both of you giggling like mad until Charles thought this was it, under the italian starry sky on an empty patio, his hand cupping your cheek as his forehead touched yours "tell me to stop and i'll stop, I promise", he whispered as his eyes flickered between your lips and eyes, your mouth pressing on his taking him by surprise for a second before he responded the affections, his other hand cupping your other cheek as your hands grabbed each of his wrists. Interrupting the kiss for air, Charles giggled as you hid your face in his neck, your lashes tickling him as his arms circled your waist, "it's going to be hard, but I promise, if you'll allow me, that I'll protect you and support your decisions at the same time. You are my equal, my partner and my teammate, and I want to navigate these feeling with you", he whispered in your ear as if he was telling you his deepest secret. Looking up at him, you smiled, "I want that too" before his lips latched on yours again, dancing together as the newfound addiction seeming hard to suppress.

“Cat and mouse…it’s my favorite game to play. Especially since I’m always the cat.”
Thursday, February 15, 2024
“Do you think she’s caught on that you’ve been watching her, jefe?” asked Antonio Zapata, leaning back into his seat and glancing over at his lieutenant.
Santiago sneered, meeting Tony’s gaze lazily. “No, but she will tonight,” he explained, turning his attention back to the barbershop across the street.
For months, Santiago had been watching the blonde woman only days following the accidental death of her brother and she was none the wiser. Her schedule was committed to memory. He knew where she lived, where she worked, where her nephew went to daycare, the usual stores she shopped in, the restaurants she ordered from, and the people she spent the most time with.
Yes, Santiago knew practically everything about Beverly Williams.
“You think she has the money?” Tony asked.
Santiago waved a finger lazily at the building. “That’s hers,” he stated. “She can pay.”
Hours later, Santiago took a moment to text his wife.
I love you, ---.
Tony’s hand grabbed onto Santiago’s jacket, shaking him a bit. “Jefe, that’s all of them. Everyone left the shop. She’s alone,” Tony said, his eyes on the barbershop and not looking at his lieutenant that he just angered.
“You fuck,” Santiago said, swearing as the angry texts from his wife started pouring in.
Tony’s hit had made Santiago misspell baby, autocorrecting it to Abby.
I love you, Abby, the text read.
The phone continued to vibrate as her texts poured in though Santiago had no time to remedy the solution.
Sidestepping his anger, he stepped out of the vehicle and slid his handgun into the waistband of his jeans. “Don’t fucking leave the car,” he said, pointing a finger at Tony. He closed the driver’s side door and crossed the empty street.
Santiago stood in front of Locke Studios, hands in the pockets of his jacket. Watching her through the window, the blonde woman busied herself with shutting everything down alone. He didn’t say a word nor did he move, at least, not until she turned around to see him.
Ten seconds, she held his gaze. She didn’t move nor did he see the rise in her chest. She was holding her breath and he knew he had succeeded. The broom she had been holding in her hands clattered to the floor. Santiago gave her a nod, took a step back, then gave her a wink before heading back across the street.
Santiago climbed into the driver’s side and closed the door, pulling the handgun out of his waistband.
“What was that about?” asked Tony. “She saw you! You didn’t even get the money!”
In a split second, Santiago had the firearm pressed against the side of Tony’s temple. “Question me again. Go ahead,” he warned.
He allowed thirty seconds of silence to pass between them before he lowered the weapon and stowed it in the driver’s door.
“Today was just a scare. You know I like playing with my food before I kill it,” said Santiago, eyeing the shop as Beverly emerged.
“You’re going to kill her even if she gives you the money?” asked Tony.
Santiago’s jaw ticked. “You really are a dumb fuck, aren’t you? You don’t allow anyone to live. Ever. That’s you get fucking caught,” he warned. “Don’t fucking talk the rest of the way or I’ll put a bullet in your head too.”
Tony did as he was told, remaining silent and sinking into his seat like a scolded child as they drove away.

María Elisa Brígida Lucía Acuña Rosetti was born in 8 October 1872, in Real del Monte, Hidalgo. She wrote for radical newspapers, and was jailed for a time, after which she founded the Fiat Lux newspaper with Juana Gutierrez, whom she met in prison. Going into exile in the US, she formed a group of 300 anarchist women called "Las Hijas de Anáhuac", fighting for better working conditions for women. She then became part of the leadership of the anarchist Mexican Liberal Party (PLM) alongside the Flores Magon brothers. During the revolution she joined the partisans of peasant revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, organising propaganda for them, then began editing the La Reforma newspaper with Gutierrez, which was the first Mexican newspaper to champion Mexico's indigenous people. Much of the rest of her life was spent advocating for and organising education in Mexico's rural indigenous communities.

FOR MAXIMUM EASTER EGG ENJOYMENT, start with stars above us. All of her books are duo pov
For a stand alone that will have you kicking and giggling at the main character? 100 lifetimes of us. Miles has a portion of my heart. I love him.
If you want a series, I’d start with the fall creek series, the first one is what hurts us. There’s fake dating, he’s a cop, she’s a paramedic. It’s then followed by what heals us, with a female mc who is a teacher and has chronic illness with an age gap firefighter. Last but not least, my favorite book in the series, what saves us, where we have brother’s best friend who’s a paramedic (and former special ops) and a single mom who has a terrible baby daddy.
And if you need another romance author recommendation may I also recommend my other QUEENS Meghan Quinn and Mariana Zapata.
Meghan Quinn has a book called “Dear Life” that made me cry. It’s beautiful.
We gotta give more credit to these queens and get that Colleen Hoover knocked off her high horse.
Ahhh thank you SO much for this! I can’t wait to check them out! 🫶🏻
Colleen Hoover actually needs to be stopped tbh, what she puts out into the world is harmful 😤😤

Apparently I didn't do this the first time round (what was wrong with me?), so here are my 4x02 thoughts:
Really cool puzzles in this episode - both the magnetite map and the ATM have such great solutions. I wonder who came up with the creepy facial recognition gas-ATM.
I get why Patterson was so pissed at Boston to begin with this time around (the whole 'I coded a backdoor into Wizardville so I could snoop on people's phones' thing was a massive betrayal of trust, even if he then apologised and helped the team arrest his terrorist boyfriend), but why was Boston so mean to Kurt? 'You got one, Limpy!' I'd love to see you survive a gut shot, Boston (and let's be realistic, if they hadn't stopped the show at season 4.5, he probably would have gotten one, because gut shots are Blindspot's favourite injury - Mayfair, Jane, Roman, Patterson, Kurt, Keaton, Weitz...).
I've said it before and I'll say it again - as much as I love both Rich and Boston, the comedy gay couple/sassy gay friend trope makes me facepalm. I just don't get the sense in this episode that these men are attracted to each other, despite Rich's cooing. They have sibling chemistry, not ex-lovers who are still pining for each other, and they remind me of children squabbling over who gets the first cookie. 🙄 At least 4x08 goes a little way towards fixing that (until Rich ruins it by being a total asshole).
Remi's face when Sokolov describes the FBI as hamstrung by bureaucracy and ego is just awesome. She's like, 'Yep, this guy gets it.'
And again, the FBI's 'shoot first, ask questions later' policy comes back to bite them, because if Sokolov had lived, no 4x08... 🤷‍♀️ But also, I have no idea how they would have written it into the show, so...
The Remi and Roman scenes just made me so sad, because Remi is completely alone, talking to her brother who isn't there, trying to justify herself and her convictions (which we see at the start of 4x03, she isn't that sure of. 'Of course I can kill my husband...but not right now, that wouldn't be the right time.'
They really could have used the 'Zapata was on the plane, but not really' plot thread to make everyone cry, but they didn't bother. I wonder if they filmed a scene or two that were cut for length. I'll forever be sad that we never got any deleted scenes for seasons 4 or 5. 😭
Sometimes Blindspot is as subtle as a brick to the face with its cases and subplot parallels, but they did a great job with this episode. Sokolov being able to convince agents from multiple agencies to hand over documents, because there's no inter-agency cooperation, goes nicely with Keaton's complete lack of inter-agency cooperation re: Zapata (and why does it need to be kept so super secret that even a team working to take HCI Global down can't be read in, Keaton?). And Madeline's gleeful confession that she killed her husband pairs really well with Remi mixing up a little gift for Kurt at the end of the episode.
Audrey did so well with her 'I hate this undercover assignment' scene. Poor Tasha. Even though I don't see why Reade couldn't know, I do feel awful for her.
Madeline has such potential to be a great villain, but they just didn't bother to go anywhere meaningful with her. Helios was pretty masterful as a plan, but her underlying motives with her father are tissue-paper thin. :/ It makes all of the Helios arc feel kind of pointless, in retrospect. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio does a great job, but after Shepherd and Roman, Madeline is just meh. Plus Remi just steals the show with her plotting and scheming.
Remi turning an argument around on Kurt again is so much fun to watch, and especially the way she course-corrects with the giant eyes and 'I just want to help people, just like you' stuff. Makes me think of the Jane-as-Goth!Remi episode, where she's just overly bitchy. 😁
Brb, squeeing over every moment of Remi now! Especially her knowing that he'll be first through the door to save her, even though she doesn't remember anything about being in the field with him from being Jane.

Day 10: Spine-Chilling
10/10: Spine-Chilling
Universe // Characters: Benny “Borracho” Magalon (This is a different reader from the IT universe.)
Big Nick O’Brien has a little sister.
Penny.
That’s not her real name, just the nickname that he’s always called her around the guys, the family nickname. Don’t want any of you fuckers looking her up. That was the brotherly threat to leave her alone whenever she came to LA to visit Nick, Deb, and the kids.
But Borracho always liked a challenge, especially when he knew it would mess with Nick. He figures this is why Nick’s kept him on the team for so many years. He’s not a diplomat, like Henderson. Or a workout buddy, like Connors. Or a lady’s man, like Zapata. He’s quiet, an observer, and Nick never can quite figure out what Borracho’s endgame is.
The big secret? Borracho doesn’t have an endgame. Not anymore, at least. At first, he thought he would end up with a nicely redone house in the suburbs, married with maybe a kid or two, pulling a nice pension from the LASD. But now, two months since the ink dried on his divorce, no kids, and a gutted house on a quiet suburban street with a For Sale sign out front is all he has of that particular plan.
So when he steps into the bar down the street from the Sheriff's office for a drink before heading back to a mostly empty one bedroom apartment a few blocks over and sees you sitting at the bar, he figures, fuck it, and sits down next to you. He’s not sure if you’re going to recognize him but you seem to as you give him a welcoming smile.
“Detective Magalon, right?”  Your eyes are the same shape and color as Nick’s but they hold a helluva lot more warmth.
“Only to the higher ups when I’m in trouble. Most people call me Borracho. Or Benny.”
You frown slightly. “Borracho. That’s kind of a mean nickname.”
He’s surprised you know what it means; Nick’s Spanish is atrocious at best. But he just holds up the beer that is placed in front of him. “If the shoe fits. You waiting for your brother?”
“Yeah, he was supposed to meet me here about forty minutes ago.” You shrug. “So I figure I’ll drink a couple more beers, put them on his tab and then head back to the hotel to get changed for McKenna’s school play tonight.”
That’s the reason for your visit then. “Well, he wasn’t in his office when I left so I can’t help you out there.”
You watch the basketball game that’s playing on the tv over the bar. “Yeah. It’s kind of his MO. I just hope he shows up to the play tonight. It’ll break that little girl’s heart if he doesn’t.”
The detective in him has a long list of questions to ask you. Nick has dirt on all the guys in Major Crimes, Borracho included. It would be nice to get some dirt on Nick himself. But he’s filing through all the questions he can ask you when you interrupt his thoughts.
“You don’t need to babysit me, by the way.”
He shakes his head. “Just having a beer before heading home.”
You hum, but he can’t tell if it’s a positive or negative acknowledgement of his statement. “So did Nick give you that nickname?”
“Yup.” And that’s all he says. He doubts that you’re aware of Nick’s post drug test parties with the booze, drugs, and girls. And he’s certainly not going to tell you that he earned that nickname at the first party when he pounded beer and whiskey all night to keep away from the drugs and women. He was trying to work on his marriage and didn’t want to fuck it up with some quickie with a party girl. So he drank himself into a stupor and Nick joked about having to get “el borracho” home safely and the nickname stuck. “He mentioned Penny isn’t your real name.”
You give him a side eye look, curiosity and suspicion mixed in your face. “No, it’s not.”
And then you tell him. Easy as that, he has your real name, a piece of banned information. “So how’d you get Penny?”
You think about it for a moment and then just shrug. “I fell in the backyard pool when I was two and Nick, who was ten at the time, jumped in and pulled me out. My mom said I was lucky to have a brother that saved my life. Lucky like a penny.” You take a sip of your own beer. “Nick took a different stance on it when I was a little older. He told me that’s all I was worth, that was all that the circus would pay him for me, a penny.”
Borracho laughs. “So the assholery started young with him.”
“Oh yeah. I didn’t have a childhood with Nick. I survived childhood with Nick.” You shake your head slightly. “Our mom was always hopeful he would grow out of it. But obviously, he hasn’t, huh Borracho?”
“Yeah, Mom may need to wait a few more years on that.”
Your eyes drop down to the bar for a heartbeat before returning to the tv. Interesting. He files that away as a clue that your mother has passed. He knew from a picture and newspaper article that is framed in Nick’s office, that your father had been killed in the line of duty about twenty years ago. It would make sense that both your parents are gone, for Nick’s behavior is much like an unsupervised teenager.
He takes a breath to ask another question when the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, that spine-chilling feeling of someone watching you with less than friendly intentions. Surprisingly, you must feel it too because a wry smile twists your lips.
“I sense a disturbance in the Force.”
Sure enough, here comes Nick, making a beeline towards you both but his eyes are laser focused on Borracho. You address Nick before he can say anything.
“You need to pay Detective Magalon overtime for having to keep me company while you were off doing god knows what. Or who.”
Borracho is convinced he’s about to witness a homicide. Right here, at the bar. He buries his face in the beer glass. Nice knowing you, Penny.
But Nick just sniffs and rolls his shoulders to shake off the accusation. “Borracho isn’t comfortable exchanging money for women’s company. He’s got other vices.”
That is not untrue.
“How’s the wife, Borracho?”
He sees you tense, whether at Nick’s attempt to needle him or the piece of information, he’s not sure.  But Borracho keeps his eyes on the game. “Doing great now. Divorce was finalized two months ago.”
The look you give your brother almost makes Borracho slink away from the bar. But it must be commonplace for Nick because it doesn’t even phase him.
“You should have said something,” Nick laughs. “We’ll get you two girls at the next party. What do you like? Redheads? Blondes?”
Borracho lets his eyes slide briefly over you. “I like brunettes.”
There’s a very slight rise of color to your cheeks and a touch of a smile on your lips. Nick also takes note of the implication to the statement and his jaw ticks. “Well, we need to get going if we’re going to make dinner and the school play. You know,” he claps a hand on Borracho’s shoulder, “things you don’t have to worry about now.”
You sigh and stand up. “Come on, Nick. We both already know you’re an asshole. No need to prove it.”
“Aw, Borracho knows I’m just busting balls, right? Cause that’s what I do, bust balls.”
The threat is very much understood and Borracho has no trouble believing that Nick would be more than happy to castrate him if he so much as hugged you. But he watches you follow Nick out of the bar and catches that devious little smirk you toss over your shoulder. He returns it before finishing his beer. Seems like he’s not the only one who likes a challenge.
This could be fun.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Literary Fiction Picks
It Would Be Night in Caracas by Karina Sainz Borgo, Elizabeth Bryer (Translation)
In Caracas, Venezuela, Adelaida Falcon stands over an open grave. Alone, except for harried undertakers, she buries her mother–the only family Adelaida has ever known. Numb with grief, Adelaida returns to the apartment they shared. Outside the window that she tapes shut every night—to prevent the tear gas raining down on protesters in the streets from seeping in. When looters masquerading as revolutionaries take over her apartment, Adelaida resists and is beaten up. It is the beginning of a fight for survival in a country that has disintegrated into violence and anarchy, where citizens are increasingly pitted against each other. But as fate would have it, Adelaida is given a gruesome choice that could secure her escape. Filled with riveting twists and turns, and told in a powerful, urgent voice, It Would Be Night in Caracas is a chilling reminder of how quickly the world we know can crumble.
The Lost Book of Adana Moreau by Michael Zapata
In 1929 in New Orleans, a Dominican immigrant named Adana Moreau writes a science fiction novel. The novel earns rave reviews, and Adana begins a sequel. Then she falls gravely ill. Just before she dies, she destroys the only copy of the manuscript. Decades later in Chicago, Saul Drower is cleaning out his dead grandfather’s home when he discovers a mysterious manuscript written by none other than Adana Moreau. With the help of his friend Javier, Saul tracks down an address for Adana’s son in New Orleans, but as Hurricane Katrina strikes, they must head to the storm-ravaged city for answers. What results is a brilliantly layered masterpiece—an ode to home, storytelling and the possibility of parallel worlds.
Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea, Enrique Hubbard Urrea (Translator)
Nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the United States to find work. Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn't the only man who has left town. In fact, there are almost no men in the village--they've all gone north. While watching The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men--her own "Siete Magníficos"--to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over. Filled with unforgettable characters and prose as radiant as the Sinaloan sun, Into the Beautiful North is the story of an irresistible young woman's quest to find herself on both sides of the fence.
Conquistadora by Esmeralda Santiago
As a young girl growing up in Spain, Ana Larragoity Cubillas is powerfully drawn to Puerto Rico by the diaries of an ancestor who traveled there with Ponce de León. And in handsome twin brothers Ramón and Inocente—both in love with Ana—she finds a way to get there. She marries Ramón, and in 1844, just eighteen, she travels across the ocean to a remote sugar plantation the brothers have inherited on the island. Ana faces unrelenting heat, disease and isolation, and the dangers of the untamed countryside even as she relishes the challenge of running Hacienda los Gemelos. But when the Civil War breaks out in the United States, Ana finds her livelihood, and perhaps even her life, threatened by the very people on whose backs her wealth has been built: the hacienda’s slaves, whose richly drawn stories unfold alongside her own. And when at last Ana falls for a man who may be her destiny—a once-forbidden love—she will sacrifice nearly everything to keep hold of the land that has become her true home. This is a sensual, riveting tale, set in a place where human passions and cruelties collide: thrilling history that has never before been brought so vividly and unforgettably to life.

REVIEWS OF THE WEEK!
Books I’ve read so far in 2023!
Friend me on Goodreads here to follow my more up to date reading journey for the year!
___
64. Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hear me out: The main reason why this isn't a five star read was because something about it kept putting me off. Like, I would pick up the book and think, "I'm really enjoying this, wow!" and then I'd put it down. Then anxiety would hit and I wouldn't pick it up for days at a time. But I've very glad I did.
I loved the story behind this and seeing how the FMC and the MMC worked through their *cough* sexual *cough* frustrations. Their chemistry jumped off the page from the moment they met. Their spicy scenes fed some of the spicy hunger I had while reading this book, but it was how they grew to not being able to be without the other that really got me...even if this was set in a short amount of time.
Let's be honest: this book was massive, but it takes place over a surprisingly short amount of time. That threw me off a bit.
I loved the whole "evil twin" trope because it felt like its own character for the first half of this book. It definitely added a nice twist to the traditional small-town romance storyline! Especially since the FMC was already running away from something in her past.
The cast of side characters were great and I enjoyed getting to know them and watching them grow and just warm the pages of the book.
One thing: This felt very much like a book Zapata fans would love. My only complaint (even though in other instances I would be the opposite of this) is that we had a dual perspective. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed seeing what Knox had to say and what his thoughts were, but one of the things I enjoyed about books like this is seeing the love interest slowly melt as the story progresses. Being able to see what he's thinking kind of took that mystery away for me. I'm just in a contrarian kind of mood, I guess.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this and I'm glad I kept trying to read it. It was definitely worth the fight and I definitely want to pick up the sequel at some point this year!
___
65. Hitting the Wall by Cate C. Wells--⭐️⭐️⭐️
I came for the secret baby and stayed for the tough as balls FMC. She was a fighter mom who only wanted the best for her daughter and who loved her no matter what society told her or threw at her. Their relationship was what made this book something so special.
But that MMC was something else. He was so naive and so frustrating. There was so much talk about "family" and being unable to believe that someone he grew up with could be so awful. But I WILL say that I appreciated how he did start to notice certain things and was immediately in dad mode. I do think, however, that he needed a backbone and I absolutely loved how the main character kept calling him out whenever he said, "I'll talk to them".
The spice was pretty good, but also felt slightly basic and a little fast--especially consider the trauma the FMC has of being shut out so soon after their ONS so many years before (when she was 17 and he was 24, btw, which was weird af.)
I did like the mystery behind this and how it carries into the second book. I DO think that one of the things that could potentially be detrimental to this series is how it is potentially intertwined with the other series by Wells. I'm pretty sure something happens in another book in her other series that is referenced in book 2. Also, the abrupt ending in this book where...no one really faces any real consequences was disappointing.
Good thing I liked the second book more.
___
66. Against the Wall by Cate C. Wells--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hands down, this book was better than the first one.
The MMC still had some naive moments like his brother in book one, but his spine was a little stronger. Plus, we all love the misguided guy who thinks the only way to get the love of his life's attention is by teasing her and *bullying* her in front of others, even though he insists that he wasn't bullying her.
I think with storylines like this, where we have two narrators, getting the full story really adds meat to a story, transforming it from a one dimensional bully story into a fully fledged story of a man pining so hard for another woman that he reverts to acting like a child. For example, her commenting that he was acting weird and twitchy, when, after reading what his personality is actually like, the reader knows that he's just nervous as hell.
The spice took a while, but I enjoyed it (even if it was admittedly brief) because we had to work for it. It wasn't gratuitous and it was granted to us after a build up of this relationship being fixed and healed.
But while I enjoyed the banter (I laughed a few times), the surprisingly delicious southern charm, and the thrilling undertone of the mystery and cloud of despair hanging over the town, I really didn't like how the FMC reacted to something she stumbles upon. Granted, maybe I'm broken, but I didn't agree at all with her reaction. Another thing I wasn't a huge fan of, but I won't take a star off for because it makes sense since this is a southern book, but the God worship was...a lot. If it wasn't for the sex, swear words, and innuendo, I'd call this a Christian romance. It was a lot and although it didn't feel preachy, it was a lot more than I was used to in my romance novels.
Also, some of the events of book one are transferred to this one, so that was a great way of continuing the tension from the last book.
___
67. Skandar & the Phantom Rider by A.F. Steadman--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
SKANDAR book one took me completely by surprise. I never expected to love it as much as I did, to the point where I sometimes still think about it. I think this is one of those series that has the power to be remembered decades from now because it has so many things that a lot of readers love in MGLit novels: adventure, mystery, a daring group of friends, an outcast MC trying to still do the right thing, and a world that is determined to make the MC's life as difficult as possible.
While book two didn't have the same impact on me as book one, I still really enjoyed it. I loved the twists and that ending! This book follows the MC almost directly after the events of book one, so we are immediately seeing the repercussions of his secret keeping, how the truth of his existence is affecting his new society, and what it looks like to be treated as an outsider in a very bigoted world (bigotry against spirit unicorns). I liked seeing these very really consequences and felt the pain the MC felt when he encountered the people who wanted to either keep him down or take him out completely.
One of the things this series also tackles in a slightly subtle way is grief, its effects, and its aftershocks. It shows us our inability to forgive when grief has its clutches in us--whether it's grief for a person or for a life that never was. This grief can be catastrophic and even world-ending.
SKANDAR also touches on the very real emotions kids might experience: jealousy, moments where emotions are overwhelming but because they're so young they don't fully know how to navigate them, and the fear of disappointing those we love.
This is just a very well rounded book with some surprising twists and fun but dangerous adventure. I loved reading about how these characters find the answers they're seeking, despite everything being against them.
I highly recommend this series!
___
68. Charge by Cate C. Wells--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Came for the single mom romance with a biker dude, stayed for the adorable kid and the slap in the face the FMC's dad and stepmom needed after all of the shit they put her through. The level of audacity these people have is so frustrating that that ending was *chef's kiss*.
I love how we're introduced to the MMC in this book because it felt very realistic (especially when he finds out that the beautiful and young woman he was hitting on is actually a very young mom). I don't think I've ever read a romance book where the love interest looks terrified and breaks that "oozing sexual confidence" that a lot of love interests tend to have when the MC first meets them. It was hilarious and one of the better parts of this book.
I think I'd have to dig further into this series to fully appreciate some of the characters since they're only briefly touched on, but I did find it entertaining to see some characters I recognized from Wells's other series.
Trigger warning in this one for the mention of r#@e--that part was rough. Also, victim blaming, and emotional and verbal abuse. Stay safe out there!
I'd definitely recommend this one to readers who love a strong mom who doesn't have an easy life, but has all of the love for her child. Also, if you like a sassy kid who has a huge personality, then this one might appeal to you. And finally, if you like the classic bad boy with a heart of gold and brothers who would ride to war for him, then you need to add this to your TBR.
___
69. Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak--⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
While this wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be (thanks hype trains), I ended up really enjoying HIDDEN PICTURES.
I thought the mystery aspect of this book was fun and had some pretty good twists thrown in there, even though they did feel like they came out of nowhere. The paranormal aspect of the story gave it that nice creepy vibe--especially the artwork thrown into the story here and there.
The writing wasn't the absolute best. There were some instances that felt very YA, especially when the MC is falling for her love interest. I do love their teamwork, but it was giving me YA Thriller vibes (which isn't a bad thing because I love that genre). I don't know if I'd call this a horror novel, maybe more of a paranormal thriller?
That being said, there were definitely some creepy and skin tingling scenes that had nothing to do with the paranormal aspect. Those scenes made me so uncomfortable and were probably the things that creeped me out the most about HIDDEN PICTURES. Other than the truth behind the mystery. That was some twisted shit.
If you're looking for a fast-paced paranormal thriller this summer, this might be the one for you. Maybe don't read it alone in a dark cabin, though.
