Mrs. Payne cut a slice of cake and gave it to Liam. "Liam, darling, just eat a little." She looks at her watch and tries to give a smile. "Your friends are only two hours late--I think that's what most kids do; they always come late to parties and--" Liam's eyes start tearing up. "They're not my friends and they don't like me mum." He gets up and runs to his room, more tears filling his eyes.
Liam slammed his door shut and jumped on his bed, landing on his stomach. Bursting in tears in his pillow, fully sobbing. He had been lonely for years, constantly getting bullied, yet he gave all his classmates an invitation to his party, hoping someone, anyone would come along. He felt like a fool, giving himself hope that someone would give him a chance, even though no one liked him.
"Liam?" His mother softly asks from outside his door. "Someone's here to see you." Liam wipes his eyes. "Go away." He shouts half heartedly. "It's someone from your school. He's here for your party." Liam's eyes widen and immediately sits up. "Really?" He asks. "Who?" His mother giggles. "You'll have to come down and see, Liam." His heart steadily beats faster. He gets up and quickly wipes his eyes. He doesn't care who showed up, he was just happy that someone came.
He quietly walks downstairs and peaks around the corner to try and see who came. He sees a raven haired boy, wearing a white shirt and khakis. His beautiful big Brown eyes and long eyelashes fluttering, as he talks with his mom. He turns his head back around before the boy can see him. 'Who is he?' He thinks. He's never seen the boy from his school, but he's not against someone coming to his party.
He slowly walks around the corner and goes into the kitchen. Mrs.Payne sees Liam and smiles. "Liam, Zayn has come to join your party." 'Zayn. What a beautiful name' He thinks as his heart beats faster. "Hi." He says shyly. Zayn smiles. "I didn't know what to get you, so I got you a teddy bear." He says, giving him a small Brown bear. Liam hesitantly takes the bear and blushes. Mrs.Payne smiles and walks over to Liam. "I'll leave you two to the party. I have to go help at work. I'll be home either later tonight or tomorrow morning." She kisses Liam's forehead and heads out the door.
Liam, still blushing, says a quiet thank you and sits down. "I'm sorry I don't remember you from any of my classes." Zayn shakes his head. "I'm not. I actually saw a lot of invitations to this party. I decided to come since it looked like it would be a crowded party but I guess not." Sadness washes over Liam. "But that's okay. I like small parties like this, too. It's more intimate." He gives a smile.
"So what did you have planned for this party?" Liam looks up. "I'm not sure honestly. I just wanted a simple party where we ate cake and opened presents." Zayn nods. "Sounds good to me, especially that cake." He raises his eyebrows. He grabs the cake and cuts a slice for himself. "So Liam. Since I technically barged in, I will introduce myself. My name is Zayn Malik. I'm from Bradford and I love art. I love drawing and spray painting, honestly anything." He takes a bite out of his cake. Liam smiles and introduces himself.
"Wolverhampton. Nice" He says. "You know, it's kind of hard to believe no one wouldn't come to a party to celebrate someone so beautiful." Liam chokes on his cake. He's never been complimented before. He clears his throat and takes a drink of his tea. "Th-Thank you. But, I'm not popular. I don't really have... any friends." He says quietly. Zayn gets up and kneels in front of Liam. "Hey, don't worry about it." He lifts Liam's chin. "They're horrible if they can't see a great friend." He wipes Liam's tears away. "And it's the birthday. Let's go celebrate it." He takes Liam's hand and takes him outside. "Where are we going?" He asks. "It's a surprise." Zayn says, opening the passenger door for Liam. He then gets in and starts driving.
They go around the town, drinking lightly at a bar, before heading to a fancy restaurant that's dimly lit. They talk about their interests, likes and dislikes, future, before heading back on the road. Zayn drives for a while, until they get to seemingly nowhere, a sandy place far from the city with no lights.
Zayn parks and looks at Liam. "I go here when I want to get away for a while." He lifts the rooftop of the car. "You can perfectly see all the wonderful stars." Liam looks up in awe. The night sky was beautifully lit, the stars seemingly twinkles extra bright tonight. He looks over to Zayn and smiles. "Thank you. This was the best birthday ever." Zayn looks back at him and takes his hand. "I'm glad you liked it. Everyone deserves a great birthday. Although I'm sad no one came to your party, I'm also glad that they didn't. Otherwise I wouldn't have shared a great night with you." Liam blushes, his heart beating fast.
They slowly lean in, until their lips touch. A small peck was given, until Liam pushes forward, giving a bigger kiss. Zayn puts his hand on Liam's cheek and gives him another kiss. They hold on for a while, until Zayn slides his tongue across Liam's lips, asking for entrance. Liam parts his lips, now fully making out with Zayn. He climbs onto Zayn's lap, wrapping his legs around Zayn's hips and arms wrapped around his neck. Zayn wrapping his arms around Liam's waist. They continue making out until their lips get tired.
Liam puts his forehead against Zayn's, breathing heavily. They sit like that for a while, not talking or moving, just taking each other in.
After a couple of hours, Zayn drives them back to Liam's house. The air feeling a little crisper than usual, as they both come down from their high, realizing how much they want to stay together. The ride coming to a close, as Zayn stops at Liam's house. "Don't leave. Please." He begs with his eyes. Zayn smiles. "Of course not."
When they get inside the house, Liam takes Zayn hand and runs upstairs to his bedroom. He turns on the light and puts his house keys on his dresser, before taking his shoes off and changing into a t shirt and sweats. Zayn looks around. He sees Liam's toy story toys and some Batman posters. "Batman. Nice." Liam looks at his poster and blushes. He sits on his bed and twiddles his thumbs. "Do you mind laying with me? I don't want to be alone tonight." He asks softly with his head down.
Zayn takes his shoes off and goes to the other side of the bed and lays down on his side, behind Liam. He softly grabs Liam's waist, pulling him closer. Liam lays down and faces Zayn, as Zayn holds onto his waist. "You'll never be alone with me." He whispers before kissing Liam's forehead. Liam smiles and buries his head into Zayn's neck, taking in his scent, as he slowly drifts asleep.

"Really?" "Yes, Liam." "Who is it?" His mother smiles. "You have to come down here too see." She says before walking away. His heart steadily beats faster.

Chapter Ten
Jax came through the door as I was sat on the arm of the couch next to Chibs. Tommy saw the baby and he was instantly at Jax's side. I stood up just as everyone else did and got to look at my little nephew. Clay was joking around and offering the baby boy his first drink with his grandad. I smiled as Jax leant down to show Tommy his new cousin and the look in Tommy's eyes as he giggled while Abel held his finger made my heart swell. I had always thought about having another child so that Tommy wouldn't be alone. But that thought was just another thing to add to my list.
"Wanna hold him?" Jax asked me as I smiled down at the gorgeous little boy that was my nephew. I nod my head and Jax carefully passes Abel over to my arms. I cradled the baby into my chest as I lightly bounced him.
"Hey little guy." I cooed at him as his small eye darted around looking at all the wonders around him. Chibs reached around me and let Abel grabbed hold of his little finger.
"Tight grip on ya lad." He chuckled and I gave a soft laugh too.
"Mommy, can I hold him?" Tommy asked and I looked to Jax for confirmation and he gave the go ahead. And that was how most of my night consisted. Sitting with Abel in my arms and watching Tommy run around with Opie's kids. Chibs would come and check on me every so often as well, I had reduced myself down to just drinking coffee as I wanted to take care of my little nephew.
The party was going great. All I could see were smiles and all the club relaxing for once in the blue moon. Tommy was now being picked up by Chibs as he was talking to Opie and Tommy rested his head on his shoulder; a clear sign he was getting tired. Meaning I would have to take him home soon.
"Can I get a hold now; you've been hogging him all night." Tara asks as she sits down next to me.
"Sure." I reply and then slowly pass my nephew over to her. She looks down in adoration at the small boy and I decide now was the time to question her on my brother.
"So, you and Jax?" I raise an eyebrow and she smiles at me in a short response before talking.
"Yeah, I don't know. It's..."
"Complicated?" I finish off for her and she nods her head. "What's so complicated? You love him, right?" Again, she nods. "Then go for it. I know he has been smitten with you since he first lay his eyes on you."
"It's not him that I'm worried about." Tara sighs and I follow her sight over to where Wendy was talking to my mom. I knew exactly who she was looking at and I knew exactly why.
"You know, when I first got with George I had to deal with his ex." I began, which dragged Tara's eyes back to me. "She was a mean bitch I'll tell you that." I laughed and she let a smile come to her lips. "But I told him. It was her or me. He had no issues with cutting her off completely. I made my intentions known loud and clear and he followed them. Jax just needs to know who he really wants." I finish and Tara nods her head before I give her a smile and depart to go check on Tommy.
I found my son sat with Opie's kids and I smiled at the sight of them just playing. Tommy was watching as Ellie was playing with Kenny's hair. He saw me and ran up to me and grabbed my hand.
"Mommy, can you play with my hair?" He asks me with his little smile. My heart swelled at seeing him happy and enjoying himself, how could I say no to that face?
"Of course. Hairdresser mommy to the rescue." I reply and sit on the floor next to Ellie and Kenny. Tommy moved to sit in front of me and then I was running my fingers through his hair and putting some of his long locks in tiny ponytails with the bands that Ellie gave me. I sat with Tommy like this for a couple more minutes, until the kids decided to run around playing hide and seek. I happily let Tommy run and hide as Kenny began counting. I stood up and went to the kitchen to begin making myself another coffee to finish the night off before I would take Tommy home.
Once I was done, I re-joined the party and leant against the wall near the kitchen as I watched over how Kenny found Tommy hiding in Chibs' jacket. My chest shook with my laugh as I walked over to them.
"Mommy look!" Tommy cheered as he showed me again how he had hidden in Chibs' jacket. I shook my head at my son, as he then came back out of the jacket and jumped down from Chibs' lap. "Thank you Chibs!" He says and then he was running off with Kenny to go find Ellie.
"Riley." I turn around at the sound of my name being called. Dona was smiling at me as she came over to me. I gestured for us to move to the other side of the room as it was less crowded with the sons. "Your son is handful."
"Oh, I know, I pushed him out." I laugh in response and she joins in. "But he really loves Kenny and Ellie. Anytime you and Opie want some alone time, just drop them over to my house and they can have a sleep over." I offer her and she smiles in thought.
"That'll be great. You free next Saturday?" She asks me.
"I'm pretty sure, why?"
"We should have a night like we used to. Come by and I'll make sure to have a couple drinks ready." She suggests. When we were younger, before I left, Dona was one of my closest friends. I felt wrong for not talking to her a lot while I was gone, and I hadn't had chance to catch up with her since I've been back. So, having a night like we used to, much to our parent's warnings, sneaking alcohol into one another rooms and laughing about silly things, seemed like something we could both need.
"I'd like that." We then both click our mugs together and smiled.
***
I had finished my coffee now and thought it was time to start clearing up some of the mess with Mom. Tommy was happy sitting with Jax as he was letting him hold his little cousin again. I could see he was tired so I tried to make cleaning as quick as I could.
"You don't need to help sweetheart, get that little man home." Mom tells me as I walk into the kitchen with a black bag in my hand.
"I'm just helping, Tommy is holding little Abel with Jax anyway. He'll be okay for another ten minutes." I reply and Mom rolls her eyes at me. "You know, I got my stubbornness from you."
"That's what worries me." I laugh at her response before I continue clearing up plastic plates and washing up glasses.
Once I was done, I entered the living room again to see that Opie, Dona and the kids were leaving.
"Leaving without a goodbye?" I ask as I walk up to them all.
"Just returning the favour." Opie replies. I put my hand over my heart and act shocked.
"That hurt man." I say and then he laughs before pulling me into a hug. Once we had released one another, I moved to hug Dona.
"I'm holding you to that deal for Saturday." I whisper in her ear and she laughs as she pulls away.
"Better bring your best stuff." She replies and it was my turn to laugh at her.
"Tommy come say goodbye." I call to my son as he waits for Jax to take Abel from him. He then bolts over to Kenny and Ellie and hugs them both.
With our final goodbyes they all left the house and I closed the door behind them.
"'Cuse me doll." Tig says as he opens the door again and leaves. I raise my eyebrow at seeing Tig being one of the first to leave a party for once.
"Alright little man, say goodbye to everyone. It's time to go home and go to bed." I say as I turn Tommy around by his shoulders then he goes to Gemma to start his train of farewells. I get his backpack with his toys together and get his coat.
"You leaving darlin'?" Chibs asks as he comes up to me by the front door.
"Yeah, I've got to get Tommy to bed. That and I want to go to bed myself." I reply as I shrug my shoulders.
"Alright. Come 'ere." He sighs and pulls me into a warm hug. I held onto him a little longer than I should've, but it felt nice to have him holding me.
"I better say goodbye to my mom and brother or they'll both kill me." I joke before walking over to my mom and Jax and saying quick goodbyes. Tommy held my hand as we walked out the door and Chibs followed us. I put Tommy in his seat in the truck and give him his teddy bear to hold whilst I drove. I close the door and then walk around to my side where Chibs had already opened the door for me. I smiled to him as I climbed in and he closed the door behind me. I rolled the window down so that he could lean on the door and say goodbye to Tommy.
"Be a good boy for ya ma." He tells Tommy, who in response puts his finger on his nose and smiles when Chibs copies him.
"Since when did you have a little thing going on here?" I ask the pair as I ruffle Tommy's hair.
"Like I said, we're best pals. Aren't we buddy?" Chibs reaches across me and then the two children fist bump. Chibs pulls his arm back and then turns his attention back to me. "Will I see you tomorrow around the clubhouse?"
"I might drive by and see how everyone is doing in the morning once I drop Tommy to school." I reply and he nods his head before leaning in to press a kiss to my forehead and then tells me to drive safe.
When we arrive home, I make Tommy brush his teeth while I stand next to him and brush my own. Then he put his pj's on and I tuck him into bed. I go back into the kitchen to get a glass of water before I head to bed myself when my doorbell rings.
I open it to see Chibs stood there and he looked worried.
"You need to come with me." He says and doesn't say anything else as he starts towards his bike.
"What's going on? I can't leave Tommy." I call to him as he starts his engine.
"Ya ma is coming to get him, she wasn't far behind. Leave the key for her and get on." He demands and I glance back into the house and back to him before I get the key out the door and leave it in the plant pot next to my door before climbing on the back of Chibs' bike. He passes me his helmet and then he pulls off the side of the road and down to the main highway.
When I see the flashing blues, my gut churned at what or who I was about to see. Just as Chibs pulled up to the tape, the rest of the sons did as well, and Opie pulled up in Dona's car. I pulled the helmet off and stood bare foot on the road before I rushed over to see what was going on.
"Dona!" Opie yells and I stop in my tracks as I see my best friend on the floor in a pool of her own blood. "Dona!" Opie called again as he saw Dona lay on the floor and then fought against everyone to get to his wife.
I couldn't breathe. My best friend, who I had just seen less than an hour ago and made plans to catch up with, was dead. The flush that once filled her cheeks was now pale. Her chest didn't rise with air, it was stone still. Her hair was matted with blood from the hole that had been blown through her skull.
I made my way over to Opie as he held his now dead wife in his arms. His cries of pain broke the hold of the tears in my eyes as I knelt behind him as he slowly released Dona. I helped him stand and we both embraced each other as the tears didn't stop. Supporting one another as we came to terms with the loss of Dona.
She was dead.

for the first time: part two | steve harrington
Tumblr media
summary: A series of events through Steve’s relationship with the love of his life.
warnings: angst, mentions of cheating, jealousy, underage drinking
word count: 4.2K
a/n: READ PART ONE HERE, but here’s part two! Hope you all enjoy :)
She woke up in her bed next to an empty bottle of wine and a necklace that had been broken at the clasp when ripped off of her neck, presumably from her own doing. Her alarm clock was blaring and her mom knocked on her door loudly, telling her that she would be late if she didn’t get up now.
“Shit.” she mumbled under her breath as she stuffed the empty wine bottle deep into her closet after springing up from her bed.
As she ran around to get ready for school, Y/N desperately tried to remember what had happened the night before. When she eventually remembered, tears pricked her eyes as she tried to brush off the thought. She had caught Steve, who she thought was the love of her life, making out with and feeling up another girl, getting ready to take her clothes off.
They had gone to a party at Carol’s house and Steve got too drunk for his own good. She couldn’t keep track of him and eventually gave up, thinking he would just be hanging out with the boys, as usual. Turns out she was wrong and he was just looking for another girl to hook up with, and he had the audacity to do it when she was there. He had become distant a few weeks back, but she brushed it off as him being in a bad mood because of his dad pressuring him to do something after high school ended in a few months.
She was a sobbing mess in the corner of Carol’s living room afterwards and Steve nor anybody else there even said anything to her. Although she was in a crowded room filled with people, she had never felt so alone in her life. It seemed as though nobody cared about her when she wasn’t with Steve now, since her reputation had been slightly tainted. Nancy and Jonathan saw her curled up on the couch with tear stained cheeks and a bottle of wine on their way out. They dragged her out of the party and helped her get home, but couldn’t stay to help her through the night. That was when she finished the bottle and ripped the necklace off her neck.
The worst part about the whole situation was that everyone would already know about it at school, since it happened at a party. So, she had to show up to school and be talked about all day. They were going to talk if she wasn’t there or not, so she decided she would show up and be strong. She would try to hold herself together and not show everyone how her heart was breaking more and more every second.
Y/N quickly finished getting ready and grabbed her backpack before rushing downstairs. She said a short goodbye to her parents at the kitchen table before running out the door, for the sake of them not seeing her puffy, tired eyes. She drove to school in record time, making it there 5 minutes before classes started. That gave her enough time to go straight to her first period of the day, English, without having to talk to anybody on the way. Plenty of people stared and whispered as she passed quickly, but she ignored them all with her typical fake confidence.
English, chemistry, calculus and biology seemed to take an eternity to pass, but she made it through without talking to anybody about the situation. She had made it to lunch without seeing Steve, too. She knew his schedule by heart, so she avoided the halls he took and the hall by his locker at all costs. But, she knew lunch would be the time that could ruin everything. Nancy and Jonathan found her as she was getting her lunch from her locker, remorseful looks spread across their faces.
“How are you feeling?” Nancy questioned as the sat down in the lunch room.
“I’m fine. Just a little hungover, that’s all. I did finish that bottle I was clinging to when I got home.” Y/N chuckled, trying to joke to ease the awkward situation.
Jonathan looked at her with a furrowed brow before pointing at her neck curiously. “What happened?” he implored.
She reached to her neck and realized the tenderness of it when her fingers grazed where her necklace once rested. “I was mad...So I broke my necklace that he gave me a while ago. I don’t want to wear his name around my neck if he can’t even respect me enough to leave me instead of cheating.” she says smugly and the two nod, agreeing which her justification.
“He really is an idiot. Especially to do something so stupid that would make you, his dream girl, leave him. I never thought he would break your heart.” Nancy says curtly, shaking her head in disapproval.
After that, they sit in silence for a while, eating their lunches. Y/N didn’t really know what to say in reply to Nancy, since she implied that she thought she would be the one to break Steve’s heart. Lunch ended soon after and she was off to her locker alone for the first time all day. She had avoided stopping there by keeping her books with her, but it was getting too heavy. To her dismay, the person she least wanted to see was waiting for her there.
Steve looked at her with hurt and some hope left in his eyes but was met with her empty and broken eyes when he looked at her. She looked done with the conversation before it even started. He stood to the side of her locker as she did her combination and opened it. The whole time she stood there, she ignored him.
“Y/N-“ Steve started but was cut off when she put her hand up in annoyance.
“I don’t want to hear it, Steve. I don’t want to hear excuses. I get it. You were bored with me and wanted something different. But did you really have to do it at a party that I was also at and before breaking up with me? That’s fucking low, asshole.” she says spitefully, her words dripping with hatred as she stares up at him sharply.
He wanted to explain everything, how he was too drunk to realize that it wasn’t her, how she kissed him first and called him the same nickname Y/N called him, how she pulled him into that bedroom. He didn’t even remember seeing her after getting to the party, let alone seeing her come into the room they were in. But, Steve knew she was hurt and there wouldn’t be anything that he could say to help that hurt. She wouldn’t believe him if he said it wasn’t his fault, she was too far gone at that point.
His eyes fall to her neck to see his necklace missing and a large scraping bruise along both sides of it. She had said to him once that she wouldn’t take it off as long as he still loved her, and Steve had promised her that would be forever. Obviously it didn’t seem like he loved her anymore to her, so she ripped it off with no remorse.
Even if she was coming off as strong-willed and confident in a hard situation, he could see right through it. She was hurting so much. He heard the way her voice cracked when she cut him off, he saw the remnants of smudged mascara underneath her eyes from last night, he saw her digging her nails into her palms, reminding herself to stay strong. He knew he had fucked up, he was at a loss for words.
“I’ll be over at seven tonight to drop anything I have of yours off. Leave what’s mine on the front porch. I won’t be talking to you when I come, Harrington.” she said strongly, keeping herself together surprisingly well despite feeling nauseous at the thought of letting go of everything that they had built together. With that, she walked away from him and slammed her locker shut, leaving him with his jaw unhinged, words left on the tip of his tongue that he would never get to say to her.
Seven rolls around and Steve hears Y/N pull into his driveway and get out of her car while he sits in the living room quietly. He wants to go to his porch so badly, but he can’t do it to her. She wasn’t holding herself together like she had been at school, and Steve could see that from the window when she came to the front porch. Her eyes were bloodshot and puffy, she had changed into sweats, and she didn’t care that her hair was a mess. It was like she was trying to make Steve’s heart break more than it already had, but she really didn’t know he was watching in the window.
She sets the box of Steve’s things on the welcome mat in front of the door, which included some sweatshirts, a pair of boxers, two t-shirts, a teddy bear, pictures that Jonathan had taken of them, the broken necklace, and a letter she wrote to him. Her letter to him was her closure, her way of telling him that he broke her heart and that she would try to move on, no matter how much she still loved him. Tears freely flow from her eyes as she looks over at the box next to the door he had left.
Her box was smaller, since it seemed she always stole his things instead of the other way around. In her box was a set of red lingerie she had worn for him at the beginning of the month for Valentine’s day, a pair of slippers she had left there because she hated walking on cold tile, the maroon turtleneck she had worn the night of their first time, some pictures of her and the two of them that he had taken poorly with his polaroid camera, and a letter to her. His letter to her explained what happened that night, how he deserved to get his heart broken by her, and how he would still love her, even if she did move on. Before she can become too upset, Y/N grabs her box hastily and moves back towards her car. On her way back, she sees five kids pull up on bikes through her teary eyes, the party.
“Y/N!” Max calls out from the yard where they sat their bikes down.
She wipes her tears away quickly and waves back at Max and the gang, putting on a fake smile. “Hi guys! I can’t stay, I have to go.” Y/N says in return and the group frowns almost in unison. “See you guys later!”
Dustin goes to say something but is cut off by the sound of her car door shutting and the engine starting up. The party is confused, but doesn’t question it until they get up to Steve’s front door, to be faced with the box labeled ‘Steve’ along the side. “Holy shit.” Dustin mumbles as the door swings open. Steve lets out a sigh when he sees the party at the door, but grabs the box and lets them into his house. He knew he would have to eventually tell them the story, so he might as well do it while they’re here.
Y/N pulled out of the driveway with teary eyes, knowing that she wouldn’t be around the party much after that last terrible interaction. Steve would tell them what happened, but she didn’t know if he would twist it to make her look bad or not. She drove home in somewhat of a daze, her sniffles being the only noise to fill the quiet air. She knew that somehow she would have to get over him, she couldn’t let him ruin her like this. She was going to seem unbothered by this in public, even if it broke her. She didn’t want him to see her weakness anymore, that side of her was closed off to him from now on.
It had been a month since Y/N and Steve had broken up and neither of them had really moved on. Steve was single and not looking to find anyone new, but Y/N had set out to break his heart like he broke hers. She started to flirt with the one person she knew would drive Steve up the wall with rage, Billy Hargrove. Billy happily obliged to fucking with Harrington when she began reciprocating his flirtatious jokes. He knew exactly what she was doing, and he was loving it. On their first date, Y/N made it very clear what she was doing. She wasn’t capable of anything more than a lustful relationship at the moment and wanted to make Steve hurt; she knew Billy was a pretty heartless person, so he was perfect for the job.
It started out as a strictly sexual relationship, but they quickly grew closer. Billy and Y/N would spend day and night together, laughing, crying, telling each other everything. She poured her heart out to him and he actually listened, which shocked her. He was different behind closed doors and it was starting to grow on her.
“You’re still in love with him, aren’t you?” Billy questioned one night, laying in his bed with Y/N after one of their late night encounters.
The two of them had been laughing and talking for about an hour when he brought Steve up, which made her go mute. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Billy.” she said timidly, avoiding his eyes as she spoke. It hurt too much to admit what she actually felt. It was as if every time she admitted her feelings about anything, it would all blow up in her face, so she never spoke anything to existence.
“You don’t have to lie to me, Y/N. I can tell what this is. I can see the way you look at him in the hallway at school, I see the way you act when you remember things about him that made you happy or that make you miss him. As much as I hate the kid, I can’t deny that I can see how in love you are still. I’d have to be a complete idiot to say that you were anywhere near falling for me.” Billy said, his hands combing through her hair as he spoke.
She didn’t say anything in reply, but the tears that fell onto his bare chest as they laid there in silence said everything he needed to know. He knew she wouldn’t admit it, it hurt her too much to talk about it. She felt comforted by the fact that Billy didn’t question her too much, that he cared enough to be there for her when she cried but not enough to be overbearing. She liked being with him, the way he laughed with her and pulled her close, or kissed her deeply when they were alone made her feel somewhat normal again.
He was different in bed than Steve ever was, too. Billy was rougher, more controlling, and dominated over her at all times. She seemed to enjoy it, though; he had done things to her that she had never experienced before. He would always make sure she was taken care of afterwards though, never leaving her feeling neglected after being rough with her. There was no love in their relationship, though. No butterflies came to her stomach when she would go to his house, she wouldn’t get excited every time they would kiss like she did with Steve. He realized that she wasn’t emotionally with him and respected it. Even if neither of them were in love or falling in love, they sure as hell acted like it in public.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” Steve groaned when he saw her with Billy in the parking lot before school for the first time.
“Holy shit.” Dustin said from his passenger seat, leaning over to press his face against the window and get a better look. “Well that’s a couple that I never expected to see together.”
“Shut up, Dustin. You don’t have to rub it in my face.” Steve sneers, shooting him a quick glare before turning his attention back to the couple standing in the parking lot.
Jealousy grew inside of Steve as she stood in front of Billy, who leaned against his blue Camaro coolly. She stood on her toes and grinned up at Billy as if to ask for a kiss and he happily reciprocates, leaning down to her lips as his hands snake around her waist. Billy and Y/N both knew Steve was watching, so they put on a show for him. Billy's possessive hands stayed somewhere on her waist or back every time they were together, a knowing smirk playing on his lips.
Steve was hurt, confused and broken. But he knew that he was the reason she was doing what she was. She was trying to remind him of the broken promises and empty apologies he had left her with after they broke up. Was he just selfish? Maybe. But he wanted her and didn’t want her to be with anybody else. His heart broke every time he saw them together, every time Billy touched her skin or kissed her lips when he was around. It should have been Steve doing that, and she knew it all too well. As much as it hurt her to be kissing someone else in front of him, Y/N wanted Steve to feel remorse for his stupidity.
In reality, she was waiting for him to come crawling back to her. She had too much pride to make any first move towards getting back together with him. If that meant she had to wait months for him, she would. Billy and Y/N planned on breaking up after a few weeks to test Steve. She wanted him to do something, say anything about her, even give her a sympathetic or sad look in the hallway. And so she waited, trying to see what Steve would do after hearing of her and Billy breaking off whatever they had. She cried into her pillow every night, hoping that maybe Steve would come to her window to talk to her. She sat in the living room to do her homework after school, hoping that maybe Steve would come to the front door to apologize to her. She hoped and wished, but it seemed like nothing was going to happen. In reality, she just missed everything that they had together.
Two weeks after Billy and Y/N broke up, Steve began to see what she had been doing all along. She was trying to make him feel the way she did when she saw him with another girl. Deep down, he kept telling himself that she really did believe his letter from the box of her things. He was right, too. She was waiting for him to come to her, her pride wouldn’t let her come crawling back to Steve.
And Steve did exactly what she needed him to do; she knew him all too well. He waited until the time was right before trying anything, though. He could tell she was struggling when April came around, since graduation was right around the corner. She wasn’t graduating, but Steve was and that stressed her out more than going into her senior year did. She thought their time had run out and that he would leave for somewhere bigger and better. Little did she know, Steve wasn’t leaving Hawkins any time soon and wanted her to be on his side.
Steve waited until halfway through April to even attempt to talk to her again. The first time he tried to go to her locker, he was stopped by Jonathan on the way; he needed help with some pictures. The second time, he got caught up in the sea of people in the school hallway and didn’t want to be late to his English class again. The third time, he chickened out before he made it to her locker. After those three times, he promised himself that he would do something about it outside of school. The hallway seemed too public for him to even talk to her.
One day in late April, Steve finally mustered up enough courage to talk to her. Unfortunately, the day he planned on talking to her in the parking lot after class was a day that it poured rain, and he hadn’t brought an umbrella or worn a hooded jacket. Nevertheless, he had enough strength to talk to her and he was going to do it either way. He tried to get her attention in the front hallway before she walked out the front doors, but he failed miserably. He grabbed for her shoulder, but missed and almost face planted in front of the whole school.
He looked like a stalker, following her to the car in the rain, but he didn’t care. She had an umbrella covering her head as she ran towards her car in the pouring rain. Y/N was caught off guard when she saw a sopping wet boy out of the corner of her eye as she fumbled with her keys. She looked over at him with wide and curious eyes as Steve stood there, the rain pulling his hair down in front of his eyes.
“Can we talk?” Steve called out, trying to speak loud enough for her to hear him over the roaring rain.
“I don’t know, Steve. What in God’s name would you even want to talk to me about?” she questions from under the umbrella, trying to keep her typically brave facade up.
“Oh give it a rest, Y/N! You know exactly why I want to talk to you. Please.” he practically begs as everything on his person becomes drenched with rain.
She can’t tell for sure, but she could have sworn that she saw a tear in the corner of his eye; it was either that or a rogue raindrop that hit his eye. Her gaze softens when she realizes how serious he was being, his tone filled with pain. She nods hesitantly and quickly unlocks her car door, reaching to unlock the passenger side also. Steve hurries to the door and slides in, letting some rain in as he does.
“Before you say anything or cut me off. Just let me say that I’m sorry, I really am. You never gave me a chance to say that in person, and I understand why. But I’m fucking sorry, Y/N. And I love you, still.” Steve says quickly, staring over at her hopefully.
Almost immediately her eyes well up with tears and she tries to blink them away, but it doesn’t work. That’s what she had needed the whole time, just a simple apology. And he had never tried to give it to her. “You’ve had two months to say that, Steve.” she says calmly, staring down at the keys that sat in her lap. “I’ve been waiting for that for two damn months, you asshole.” she says with an exasperated laugh.
“What? That’s all I needed to do? Was say sorry? What the fu-“
“I was going to give you a chance to explain yourself if you apologized to me that night. You didn’t even realize I had seen it. You didn’t run after me or even acknowledge me when you came out of that bedroom and saw me crying on the couch as I slammed back my second bottle of wine by myself. But I guess that damn letter explained everything I needed to know. I didn’t want to believe that you would purposefully do that to me in the first place. I knew you loved me and that something had happened but I was too hurt to think about it, Steve. I didn’t even see you smoking weed with that girl, but obviously whatever you both had was not good and you need a new dealer.” Y/N says, shaking her head again as tears fell from her cheeks and onto her lap.
“Y/N, like I said...I’m so fucking sorry. I know I hurt you so bad. I deserve everything you’ve done to make me hurt back in the past two months. I didn’t deserve to get you back right away. But I love you more than you know, and I don’t know if I could handle you being with another guy again. Even if it wasn’t a real relationship.” Steve said, his lips curving into a tiny smile when he mentions her fake relationship with Billy.
She rolls her eyes and a small laugh escapes her lips at his words. Finally, she makes eye contact with him and sees that she was right; his eyes were teary and his nose red. Without saying another word, she reached across the console of her car and cupped his cheeks softly. The only noise to be heard in the car was the sound of the rain dripping down on the roof. She gazed into his tired, glassy eyes for a moment before kissing him softly.
“I love you too, Steve.”

“Do I look okay?” Veronica turns to Shane, then turns back again to the mirror. She pouts and points at the nearly invisible dark circles under her eyes - even Shane couldn’t lie, no amount of concealer can hide the hours upon hours they spent awake brainstorming for her Christmas album. “God, I look like a zombie.”
“But a very pretty - albeit a little tired - zombie.” Shane snorts from his place on the bed from the other side of the room. But she did look pretty, with or without a scary professional stylist who micromanages her everyday clothing choices. “Did Zadie pick that out?”
“Yeah, oh my god, you should have seen her face when she saw me packing this skirt in an overnight bag.” Veronica smooths out her maxi skirt, then cuffs and uncuffs her sweater sleeves. “I can’t believe I kept you up all night writing lyrics with me.”
“I’ll be alright… I’m worried about you, though. Do your fake dates always have to be this early?”
“Dinner is kind of teetering in the danger zone, if you know what I mean.” Veronica winks at the mirror as she ruffles her brown bangs. A non-awkward silence slips in, seconds ticks by before they burst into laughter. “Fiona just said dinner is too romantic at this point, okay?”
“Riiight… we can’t have you munching on oysters in dim lighting with Raleigh Carrera, cause you just might jump him.” Shane bites his lip to stifle his laughter. He almost feels a sense of deja vu - as if they were eight again laughing under the pillow fort that they always build in her parent’s living room. It’s as if this has happened before, except now they’re older and miles away from home - still somehow together.
“Ugh!” Veronica groans in frustration and walks over to Shane’s bed, collapsing beside him. Her weight makes the mattress dip as she tries to find a comfortable position. She ends up squeezed next to him, arms crossed. “I don’t even like him like that.”
Shane nods, closing his eyes. “It does suck that your first relationship is with a hot famous guy, Ronnie.”
Veronica smirks and burrows her cold feet under Shane’s legs.
“Eeee!” Shane squirms away. “What’s that for?!”
“That was for sassing me,” Veronica shrugs. “Speaking of fake relationships, weren’t you my fake husband?”
Back then, it was for a little movie he was shooting with his dad’s camera. That was when Shane fully realized that he’s into the whole concept of telling stories through film, so it’s only obvious that the star of all his projects would be Veronica - who also happens to be the only actress he can find that’s willing to work for candy. Everett, Veronica’s older brother, promised to play the officiant role but bailed at the last second - so they had to be creative and use their teddy bears.
“Damn, you really upgraded.” Shane still remembers that summer and how upset Veronica was when she found out that Shane already ate his ring pop wedding ring.
“Not really,” Veronica shrugs. “I mean, I don’t think he’d re-tie my shoes for me for a whole month until I figured out how to do it myself.”
“Oh my god, you still remember that?” Shane covers his face in embarrassment. “I think you realized you had to do it yourself when I accidentally tied your shoelaces together and you landed flat on your face.”
“Accidentally.” Veronica makes air quotes, earning a scoff from him.
“I was four!”
“I miss that playground… not how the sand tastes though.” Veronica smiles. “Are you coming back home for Christmas?”
“I don’t know, honestly.” Shane sighs. “Mom and Dad are already bugging me about booking plane tickets. Apparently she needs my help to convert a bunch of home videos she found in our attic.”
“Please tell me I’m invited! I want to rewatch all our movies!” Veronica sits up.
“That’s already a given.” Shane stretches his arms then proceeds to feel around the bed for his phone. “Huh… mom just sent me a video.”
Dear Shane,
Dad and I figured it out, but you still have to come home, I know for a fact that you’re not eating well at your dorm… I can tell from your Pictagram pictures. Please tell Ronnie we miss her and we’d love for her to spend the holidays with us. Love you sweetie.
LOL,
Mom
Shane bursts out laughing at his mom’s use of LOL - and the fact that his mother follows him on Pictagram.
“What is it?” Veronica lies back, scooting closer to Shane so she could peek at his phone’s screen. “Aww, I miss your mom too.”
Underneath the message is an attachment of a video, with a slightly blurry, and hauntingly familiar, thumbnail.
“Is that-?”
“Oh god. Oh no. Oh my god-” Shane tries to scramble away but Veronica’s prying hands are too quick, and she snatches the phone away from him.
Veronica taps the play button and instantly, hundreds of voices and clapping meld together into unintelligible noise and the video slowly focuses on the stage as an older student shuffles to the microphone stand.
“I now have the pleasure of announcing the final act of the Winter Talent Show,” they start a little too loudly, sending feedback throughout the auditorium. “Please welcome Shane and Ronnie as they sing Way Back Into Love!”
The announcer runs offstage and the stage lights flicker on as the curtains open, revealing a ten-year-old Shane and Ronnie by his side - both terrified. Shane remembers that moment when Ronnie couldn’t let go of his hand. The auditorium is silent and whoever is taking the video sniffs.
“Look at us!” Veronica coos at the screen, and just in time the video zooms in to their faces as they step forward to the mic stand. The announcer runs back with a spare microphone and stand for Shane, gives the two kids an encouraging nod before awkwardly running off. Shane looks at Ronnie and they finally let go of each other’s hands to get in position.
The first few notes of the song starts in a soft piano instrumental, and little Ronnie closes her eyes as if to take a breath. She opens her eyes and looks at Shane for reassurance, the uncertainty slowly fading from her face. She sings, softly at first.
I’ve been living with a shadow, overhead. I’ve been sleeping with a cloud above my bed. I’ve been lonely for so long, trapped in the past I just can’t seem to move on.
“Noooo, no no-” Shane grabs a pillow and buries his face in it, trying to drown out his own voice as he sings Hugh Grant’s parts in monotone.
“You weren’t that bad!” Veronica pokes his side as she continues to watch the video.
All I wanna do is find a way back into love.
Ronnie’s voice carries them throughout the whole performance, making both of them sound good.
“I still don’t know how you do that.” Shane tosses the pillow off his face, giving up and decides to watch the video again.
“Do what?” Veronica can’t stop smiling as she watches them finish the song and excitedly hug on stage as the crowd breaks into applause.
“That whole angelic voice thing.” Shane says oh-so-casually, hoping she doesn’t notice the tell-tale blush on his cheeks.
As the video comes to an end, little Shane and Ronnie hold hands as they walk backstage amidst the applause. Her hands were cold and clammy from nerves, not that he ever cared if her hands were sweaty or sticky with candy.
“That was so cute.” Veronica wipes her eyes, handing Shane’s phone over to him. “I love you, you know.”
Shane nods, trying not to put too much meaning in her words. “I know.”
“No, really,” Veronica sighs. “You didn’t really want to be on stage but it was my first time performing in front of a crowd that big, so when I asked you to sign up with me and you agreed, no complaints.”
“Well thanks to me we didn’t win, so.” Shane grins. A week after the talent show he gave Ronnie a trophy out of empty tissue rolls held together by glue.
Veronica sighs exaggeratedly and chuckles. She shifts position, locking her eyes onto his. His mouth goes dry. Was his best friend, since they were four, making heart eyes at him? Nah, he must be hallucinating.
He tries to squelch that weird flip-flopping in his stomach, whatever the hell it is. Tries to ignore the subtle scent of her shampoo, not quite masked by her perfume, and it takes him back to when they were ten with asters in their hair. Don’t stare at her soft lips - shit too late, too late. They’re inching closer, her breath is warm on his skin and everything’s tingling and
Riiiing!
Both of them nearly jump out of their skin when her phone starts ringing, cutting through the thick tension in the air. Veronica scrambles to get her phone and Shane’s cheeks ignite as he sits up to put some distance between them.
“Hank’s downstairs,” Veronica rolls her eyes and smiles, “Time to show up at fake brunch.”
“Duty calls!” Shane stands up and clears his throat, suddenly feeling awkward. Oh god. That was so unnatural just now. What’s wrong with you, Shane?  “So uh, I’ll walk you out?”
Veronica slips her socks on, quickly shuffling around the room to shove her stuff back into her bag. “Sure!”
“Wait, don’t forget this!” Shane fishes under his duvet for her lyrics notebook, then follows Veronica who’s already hurried out of his room. Shane spots something pink at the corner of his eye, but ignores it as he jogs down the stairs of their shared loft. After Veronica slips on her boots, Shane hands her the notebook.
“Oh my god, thank you.” Veronica takes the notebook and gives him a tight hug. “Hang soon, okay?”
“O-Okay!”
Shane watches as she rushes down the hall to the elevator. She flashes him an uncharacteristically shy smile while waiting for the elevator to reach their floor. It reaches them with a soft ding, and Shane’s stomach drops as his roommates step out - looking confused when they come face to face with Veronica. Veronica gives them a sheepish grin as she steps in the elevator, looking at Shane one last time before the doors close.
Tucker looks back at the closed elevator and back at Shane - who simply shrugs in innocence.
“That was… that was-”
“I thought you guys wouldn’t be home until Sunday?” Shane nonchalantly types a text to Veronica as he steps aside to let his roommates in.
You left your wig 😂😂😂
“Do not change the subject right now.” Tucker lugs his suitcase inside. “That person who obviously just came out of our place-”
“My friend-Ronnie? Yup.”
Shane’s phone pings with a text.
Looks like you have some explaining to do 😂
Tumblr media
Another A/N:
1. Ronnie is my Open Heart MC’s (Everett) little sister, she’s 23 and he’s 27.
2. honestly that’s it my mind is already blanking its almost 2 HAHA
3. Oh YEAH I almost forgot to talk about that edit…
4. I feel like Shane turned out as a cute kid but man…. Ronnie was looking a lot more demonic in the previous versions (I used to ILITW MC kids + their faces, not unlike my TRR edit with the TE MCs + the gang)
5. anyway i know i said i quit writing but this just stemmed from me needing Shane x MC content and not finding any so I took it upon myself to just make them lol (also Way Back Into Love is kind of my recent song obsession)
6. I just love hugh grant okay
7. okay bye

PART ONE (Biology Notes)
PART TWO (Careful)
PART THREE (Almost)
PART FOUR (Carnival Rides)
Summary: All hell breaks loose because of a goddamn scarf.
Tumblr media
“You two look cozy!” Nancy’s chipper voice made me jump and pull away from Steve.
“Where’d you two run off to?” Steve asked, “Too much fun in the photo booth?”
Nancy’s ponytail was somewhat disheveled and the top button of her blouse undone. Her cheeks went bright red.
We all silently agreed not to talk about the awkward scenario we had gotten ourselves into and instead watched the kids spin around on the ride. Matty let out a squeal, throwing his hands up in the air. The roar of the ride filled my ears as I turned to glance at Steve, who still had his arm around my shoulder. He showed me a smile, rubbing my upper arm reassuringly.
The ride ground to a halt, the kid’s sneakers rattling the metal steps.
“Ooooh. I don’t feel so good.” Matty groaned as he staggered off the ride.
The other kids were woozy as well, all of them dazed as they wavered back onto the grass.
“Told you you should’ve waited to eat funnel cake until after you were done on the rides.” I scolded Matty.
“You’re always right, I should listen to you more often.” He hiccuped, clambering up into my lap where I sat on the bench with Steve. He pulled out a bottle of water for the boy who enthusiastically accepted it, chugging down the rest.
“Why don’t we go play a few games while you get your land legs, huh?” Steve offered.
Matty nodded in agreement, climbing off my lap and reaching up to take my hand. He tugged me from my spot beside Steve, even though I didn’t particularly leave the comfort that was found under his touch.
“Matty, let’s go see if we can win a goldfish!” Dustin offered. Matty left me behind, forgetting that he wasn’t feeling so well as he chased the older boys.
“How’s he doing?” Steve asked, settling into step beside me, our shoulders brushing as we strolled.
“It’s hard to tell.” I replied, “Fine one second, sobbing the next.”
Steve nodded,
“We went to see Billy the other night when my parents were fighting.”
I could barely see Steve’s jaw clench at the mention of Billy, but I knew he at least had the decency not to trash him to my face.
“He was crying, and then he showed Billy his new shoes and suddenly he was fine again… I guess I’m just thankful for his limited attention span.”
“Can’t get it off your mind?” Steve murmured.
“Yeah. It’s just… Like… Everything reminds me of my parents. The families here, the games and rides at the boardwalk in California.”
“Steve! Come play basketball!” Matty cried, waving him over.
He glanced over at me with a look asking if I would be okay without him. I nodded, shoving my hands into my coat pocket as I watched him take off with Matty.
The boys spent their combined tickets to get a teddy bear for me from the prize booth. The cheap, pink toy already had a hole beginning to tear in the side, one of the eyes was stuck on sideways. But Matty presented it to me with a toothless grin and I couldn’t help but love it.
“Steve won it for you!” Matty beamed.
          “You helped, little man.”
“Yeah, but he got the most points on the basketball one. I guess I’m gonna have to practice with Billy some more.” Matty yawned.
He had been trying to hide his exhaustion since he got off the last ride, but I could tell the boy could hardly keep his chocolate brown eyes open. Steve squatted down beside him,
          “Piggy back?”
“Yes, please! I am sleepy!” He declared, climbing on Steve’s back.
“I think it’s time to head home, bud,” I told him, earning a pitiful sound of protest before he rested his cheek on Steve’s back, eyes closed.
“Hey! Kids!” I hollered to the party as they clustered around the prize booth, arguing over whether they should each get something or if they should combine their tickets for one item.
“I’m gonna head home, tell Nancy and Jonathan when you find them.”
“They’re probably making out somewhere again.” Mike grimaced, sticking out his tongue.
They all said their goodbyes to Matty and I,
“I’ll carry him to the car for you.” Steve offered.
“I don’t think you have much of a choice.” I grinned, glancing at Matty who had passed out in a matter of minutes despite the bustling crowd and roaring rides. If Steve hadn’t been holding onto the boy’s legs, he would’ve slipped off.
We trudged in silence to the car, the only sound being our feet on crunching gravel and dry dirt. I dug my keys from my purse, unlocking the car before gently prying Matty off of Steve’s back and getting him set in the backseat.
“Thanks for inviting us.” I exhaled, closing the door behind Matty.
“Yeah, no problem. Anytime you need anything, just… you know where to find me.” He smiled.
I opened my arms, pulling him into a brief hug before getting back into the car. He stepped aside as I pulled out of the drive. He waved in my rearview mirror, illuminated by my tail lights.
“Matty.” I coaxed, unbuckling the dozing boy’s seatbelt, “We’re home, bud.”
He let out a groan, flinging his arms around my neck as I placed my hand on top of his head to keep from hitting it as I hauled him out of the car.
I fumbled with holding the dead weight of a sleepy boy against my hip while I dug my keys out of my handbag.
I unlocked the door, stepping inside to see the house in disarray. Two broken glasses laid in the kitchen sink, a smashed bottle of some sort of alcohol on the ground, and the bar stools had been knocked over.
I let out a sigh, carrying Matty straight to his bedroom and setting him on the bed.
“Stay here, buddy. I’ll be in in a minute.” I told him, smoothing his hair and pressing a kiss to his forehead.
I peered into my mom’s bedroom, seeing her passed out on the bed. She hung off halfway, another spilled bottle laying on the green shag carpet. Adding yet another stain to the impressionist artwork that was the floor. I let out a sigh, running a hand through my hair. I closed the bedroom door as I went into the kitchen, I cautiously stepped around the shattered glass minefield, grabbing the phone off the receiver.
I didn’t even have to look at the sheet of paper that I had scribbled phone numbers on, dialing the Wheeler’s house from memory. It rang a few times before Mrs. Wheeler picked up,
“Hey, Karen. Hey. Uh, it’s Y/N. Sorry to call so late.”
          “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah… Uh…  Kinda… I guess… It’s…”I blabbered, “No. Not really. Can Matty and I come stay the night?”
“Yeah. Of course, sweetheart. I’ll get blankets and stuff out for you.”
          “Thank you.” I sighed.
I threw the dish towel over the mess on the floor, soaking up the liquid before I took out the broom and cleaned up the glass. The last thing I needed was Matty running in here barefoot and tearing his feet open.
I tore a piece of paper off the notepad by the phone, scribbling a note on it for my mother. Not that she would see it or actually care that we were at the Wheelers.
I returned to Matty’s room to see him struggling not to fall asleep while sitting up.
“Can I sleep in your room tonight?” He asked, rubbing his eyes.
“Bud, we’re going to stay with Mike and Nancy and Holly,” I told him, grabbing his backpack and loading it up with his PJs and a change of clothes for tomorrow.
“Got Scooby?” I asked as I slung his Scooby Doo backpack over my shoulder.
He clutched the ear of the dingy stuffed dog that he slept with every night, trudging over to me and leaning against my leg with a tired groan.
I decided it was best not to take the car, knowing that mom would wake up and panic thinking that we didn’t make it home last night.
I picked Matty back up, lugging him off the steps of the front porch and down the street.
“Y/N?” Somebody called out from behind me.
I twisted to see that Billy had just pulled into his driveway and was stepping out of his car.
“Everything okay?” He questioned as he trotted over to us.
I shifted Matty’s weight on my hip, earning a whine as he buried his head deeper into my neck.
“Yeah. I uh… We’re just going to stay with the Wheelers for the night.”
          “You’re walking?”
          “Yeah.”
“Jesus Christ, their house is like, three miles away. No. You’re not walking, come on.” He ordered, placing his hand on the small of my back as he led me back to the Camaro. I put Matty in the back seat, buckling him in.
I let out a sigh as I climbed into the front, leaning my head back against the seat. I was thankful that the car was already heated.
“What’s going on?” Billy whispered, resting his hand on my knee as he pulled out of the driveway.
“I… I don’t know.” I covered my face with my hands as I struggled not to cry for the second time today, “I just… I went to the carnival with the kids and Steve and Nancy.”
Billy let out an annoyed grunt, but I just ignored it,
“And I think Matty had fun. But we came back and the house was just… a disaster zone. Mom went off the deep end.”
“Did Matty see it?” Billy asked.
“No. Thank god. I just… I don’t know what I’m going to do, Billy.”
“You’re smart, you’ll figure it out.” He encouraged.
“I mean, mom can’t go to work like this. And then what? We have no income, lose the house, lose the car. God forbid, Matty and I having to go back to California with my dad.”
“It’s not gonna come to that, you can get a job. Make at least enough to make up for what your mom isn’t making. I think The Hawk is hiring.”
“Then who's gonna take care of Matty? Pick him up from school everyday, help him with his homework, tuck him in? Because I know for damn sure that Mom isn’t going to do that.”
          “I can help out some.”
“Billy, I can’t ask you to do that.”
          “You didn’t ask. I offered.”
I sighed, wiping my tired eyes.
“Thanks for the ride, Billy.” I smiled, giving him a pat on the knee as I climbed out of the car. I moved my seat up far enough to let Matty step out. I grabbed his bag and sent him to the front door as I stayed behind to talk to Billy.
          “I… I don’t know about you taking care of Matty… I just…”
“You don’t trust me,” Billy muttered, glancing down at his feet as he pulled a cigarette from his front pocket.
“What? No. That’s not it at all.”
“It’s okay if you don’t, not many people do.”
          “Billy. Stop it.”
“Then why don’t you want me to help you more?”
“He’s had nothing but shit men in his life, Billy. And I’m just being too cautious.” I admitted, “Besides. Dad just left, mom is MIA, I don’t want him to think that I’m abandoning him too.”
“Shit men.” Billy scoffed, “Yeah. That seems to be a trend, doesn’t it?”
“It’s not personal, Billy, okay? He worships you. Wears that denim jacket you got him every day, won't even let me wash it.”
“I know, but I mean, now that you’re with Steve-”
“With Steve? What are you talking about?” I interrupted.
He gestured with his lit cigarette to the scarf I had forgotten I was wearing.
“Oh. He just lent it to me at the fair. Forgot to give it back.”
He scoffed, running his tongue over his bottom lip.
          “What?”
          “Nothing.”
“It’s obviously not nothing.” I retorted, placing my hands on my hips.
“It’s nothing, okay?” He snapped. This was the closest he had ever come to sounding anything like the Billy that everybody warned me about. I was taken aback by the bite in his voice.
“Fine. Whatever.” I quipped, pushing myself off the hood of his car and heading towards the door.
“Y/N! Wait!” Billy called after me, but I ignored him.
When I got inside the Wheeler’s house, Matty was already changing into his PJ’s and settling into his spot on the couch. I didn’t even bother to change my clothes, I just climbed on the couch beside him, letting him curl up against me.
Despite our argument from the night before, Billy still picked me up for school. Matty ran over and hugged his legs,
“B! Y/N said you’re gonna come to the fair with us before it closes!” He exclaimed.
“She did?” Billy glanced up at me with a grin that quickly collapsed when he saw my disgruntled expression. It wasn’t necessarily directed towards him, although his little freak out over his fragile ego from the night before still played in my head. I was exhausted, never really being able to completely fall asleep. I would doze off, only to wake up and glance at the clock, watching the hours tick by between my short slumbers.
Billy leaned over to whisper something in Matty’s ear. His brows furrowed as he looked at Billy and then to me.
“Why are you pissed off, sissy!?” Matty shouted.
“Matthew!” I scolded, but my glare was directed at Billy, who I knew was the one to teach him that phrase.
“I’m ticked off because I didn’t get enough sleep last night, bud,” I told him, opening the car door and letting him in.
Billy drowned out the painful silence of the car ride by blasting music. Matty happily sang along from the back seat, but neither Billy and I would face each other. Maybe it was just as well, since I didn’t want to argue with him in front of Matty.
When we pulled up in front of the school, Billy instructed Matty to stay in the car for a minute,
“I wanna talk to your sister for a minute. Okay, bud?”
          “Okay,” Matty replied.
I climbed out of the car, crossing my arms over my chest as I stared at Billy. He refused to make eye contact with me,
“Talk.” I spat, sounding much more irritated than I intended to.
“Still wearing it,” Billy muttered, placing a cigarette between his lips and lighting it.
          “What?”
          “The scarf.”
“Oh for god’s sake.” I jeered, “It’s cold. I wore a scarf!” I retorted, throwing my hands up in frustration.
          “His scarf.”
“What the hell is your problem, Billy!?” I roared, my lack of sleep leaving me with no tolerance for bullshit.
“What the hell is my problem? We almost kissed like, three times the other night and now you're walking around wearing some other dude’s scarf!” He hollered back.
“Steve is my friend, Billy! He just let me borrow it because I was cold! He was just being nice!”
“Just being nice. Right. Right." He chuckled to himself, taking another drag of his cigarette, "You clearly haven’t seen the way that he’s been staring at you since you got here.”
          “What are you talking about?”
“Are you really that fucking oblivious? He’s totally got the hots for you!”
          “So what if he does!?”
“We’ve got something here, okay!? You’re my girl!” Billy shouted, grabbing my arm to punctuate his point. It wasn’t hard enough to hurt, but hard enough to startle me.
“Your girl? Since when did you decide that you fucking own me!?” I spat.
“Have we not been flirting with each other since the day you got here!?”
“Jesus Christ, Billy! What does that have to do with the fucking scarf!?” I screamed.
“I don’t know why I expected you to be different than every other whore in this shit town.” He snarled.
I felt tears stinging the back of my eyes from anger,
“Fuck you.” I hissed, “Fuck you and your stupid fucking car and your stupid fucking hair and your stupid fucking jacket.” I threw pathetic punches at his shoulder in an attempt to get him to let go of my arm, but he held firm.
          “Tell me you’re different.”
          “What?”
“Tell me you’re not like every other girl I-”
Billy was cut off by Matty running up between us. Neither of us had noticed the boy climbing out of the Camaro while we were arguing.
“Stop it!” He shrieked, tears streaming down his face. He threw meager punches at Billy’s leg until he let go of my arm,
“Don’t yell at her!” He shouted, resting his hands on Billy’s abdomen and pushing as hard as he could.
Despite being substantially smaller than Billy, he forced him to stagger back a couple of steps and bump against the hood of his car.
I brought my hands up and ran them through my hair. The last thing Matty needed right now was to have two of the most important people in his tiny world fighting.
“Matty-” Billy began, his tone softer despite his labored breath from our argument.
“No!” Matty interjected, he stood his ground against the larger boy, hands on his hips and his cheeks flushed with anger, “You don’t get to be mean to my sister. She protects me and I protect her!”
“I know you do, buddy.” Billy tried to mitigate, crouching down to Matty’s level, “We were just talking.”
          “No. You were yelling.”
“People argue, sometimes, Matty,” Billy explained, reaching out for Matty’s hand.
“You sounded like mommy and daddy.” Matty barked, pulling his had aside before Billy could take it.
I felt my heart drop into my gut and my whole body froze. Billy and I had unwittingly become substitute parental figures for Matty. And he had just caught us arguing the way our parents were before dad left for good. Billy’s eyes flitted up to meet mine, both of us coming to the realization at the same time.
I managed to lift my feet from the pavement, despite them feeling like they were weighed down with concrete blocks, stepping towards Matty.
“Matty, come on, you’re gonna be late.” I murmured, resting my hand on top of his head and redirecting him to the elementary school door.
“Just go. I’ll walk the rest of the way.” I snarled at Billy.
“No, you won't. It’s freezing.” He hollered.
          “It’s okay. I’ve got a scarf.” I retorted.
“Are you okay, sissy?” He asked once we were out of Billy’s ear shot.
“Yeah, bud. I’m fine.” I reassured, offering a weak smile.
          “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure,” I replied, squatting down in front of him and resting my hands on his shoulders. His cheeks were still flushed, brows furrowed in irritation.
I brought my gloved hands up to cup his cheeks,
          “I love you, Matty.”
          “I love you too, sissy.”
“Have a good day, okay?” I pressed a kiss to the end of his rosy nose before sending him inside.
Murmurs of my name could be heard from every corner of the school, each person stopping to stare as I trudged by. The argument in the parking lot had been on display for everyone and those who didn’t witness it had heard of it by the time first period was over.
“Ground control to major Y/N.” Steve coaxed, waving his hand in front of my face where I sat beside him at lunch.
“What? Oh… Sorry.” I exhaled, pushing the poor excuse for food around on my lunch tray.
“Are you going to talk about it or no?” He pressed, cramming a forkful of meatloaf into his mouth.
“Talk about what?” I bristled, feeling vexed that my one moment of peace during the day was being shattered by my friend talking about something that I wanted nothing more than too forget.
“Y/N,” Steve sighed, picking up on my indignation.
“Talk about what, Steve!? What? Do you just wanna say ‘I told you so’? Is that it!?”
I flung myself from my seat, snatching my backpack and shoving past the crowd on the way to the bathroom. I didn’t mean to snap at Steve, but I couldn’t help but feel stupid for not believing him. For not believing everybody that told me that Billy could be an asshole. That he was going to do something that hurt me and Matty, whether or not he meant to. It wasn’t until I noticed the bathroom mirror that I realized I had started to cry.
“Shit. Fuckin- Goddammit!” I blabbed, booting the door to one of the stalls.
The girls that were in there fixing their makeup quickly scurried away, leaving me to melt to the ground all alone.
          “Hey.”
I peered up to see Steve had followed me,
“This is the girl's room, perv.” I sniffled, wiping the tears from under my eyes.
“Seems like every time we’re together, you start crying. I’m starting to wonder if it’s something about me.”
I shook my head and rolled my eyes as he sat down beside me,
“I mean, is it the hair? I know it can be intimidating but I promise it doesn’t bite.”
I let out a feeble laugh as I reached up to the paper towel dispenser and pulled one out to wipe my nose.
“What happened?” He asked, throwing his arm around my shoulder.
          “Billy.” I sighed.
“Well. I figured as such.” He exhaled.
          “It’s just that… I don’t know… I should’ve listened to you.” I murmured, propping my head on his shoulder.
          “What did he do?”
“He saw me wearing your scarf from the other night and started getting all… jealous… possessive.”
“Well. He hates my guts, so I’m not surprised.”
“I know. I know.” I sniffled, “It’s just… I don’t know. I thought I could be friends with both of you without getting caught in the middle of whatever dick measuring contest you have going on.”
He chuckled, his shoulders bobbing as he did so,
“I wouldn’t be so upset but-” I cut myself off as I felt another sob bubbling in my throat, “but-”
Steve rested his head on top of mine, an encouragement to keep going.
          “Matty saw us fighting…”
“And he…” I smiled sadly to myself, “He put himself between Billy and I and nearly pushed Billy on his ass.”
          “Go Matty!” Steve cheered.
          “I don’t know… he just… with my parent's divorce-”
“Dead horse.” Steve corrected, forcing me to let out a soft laugh.
“He just…. He said that we sounded like my parents when they were fighting.”
          “Ouch.”
“Yeah. Ouch.” I chuckled to myself, “He… he just looks up to Billy, you know? And… I don’t know… I guess I just thought he had found a good role model. Lord knows mom and dad aren’t good examples.”
“He’s got me. Jonathan. The other boys.”
“I know. And I am so thankful for you guys. But he just formed such a quick bond with Billy.”
“To be honest, Matty’s the only person I haven’t seen Billy be an absolute dick to. Maybe he does have some standards as to who he torments.”
“I just… I feel like a shitty friend for not listening to you.”
“Hey, no.” Steve reassured, “You’ve got a lot of shit going on right now, you don’t need to worry about that.”
“Thanks for putting up with me, Steve.”
“Yeah, well, you’re cute so I decided to keep you around.”

Pick Me Up
(woooo after 3 months im writing again
thanks @sherlockvowsontheriverstyx and @clarkeisinlovewithbellamy)
5 times Bellamy picks Clarke up as they grow up.
(AO3)
I Clarke pushed herself closer into Bellamy’s side as he walked them around the crowd. Their moms had given them permission to get ice cream from the stand a couple of yards from the park where they were spending the afternoon. Bellamy looked down at the toddler and reached to straighten the vanilla – and sprinkles, thank you very much – scone that was slowly slipping from her grip. He sent a small smirk to his friend before gripping her free hand.
“Don’t worry, Princess. I got you.”
Now that Bellamy was older, Abby and his mom gave him more liberties but also more responsibilities. He could go farther from them than he used to but he had to watch out for cars if he crossed the road and had to make sure neither Clarke nor his sister got away if they were going with him. Bellamy always felt like a superhero when he could walk around without his mom even if he knew she was still watching him most of the time. Even more so when he oversaw the girls’ safety. It was a challenge to adapt to their clashing personalities. While Octavia tended to run around, explore and talk to every stranger she saw (even if everyone told her not to), Clarke was shy and got scared more easily. Bellamy had heard Jake tell his mom that he would make a good teacher one day and he loved the sound of that.
Bellamy was about to take a bite of his threat when someone bumped into him, sending most of the ice cream one the ground. The surprised of the impact made him removed his hand from Clarke’s. He quickly made a move to grab it back but only found air when he tried to. Panicking, Bellamy turned around to look for his friend. It took a few seconds but he located the mop of blonde hair a couple of feet away. She had her back to him and was obviously looking for him. He screamed her name and started running toward her.
“You were gone.”
She let out a little whimper as Bellamy bent down to her level. Bellamy slowly wiped her teary eyes but it only made her burst in ugly sobs.
“I know. I’m so sorry. I’m here now, we’re gonna go back to the blanket, is that okay?”
Clarke nodded and raised her arms, reaching being Bellamy’s neck. He flinched when he felt melting ice cream felling down his back, directly on his new shirt, but only lifted the toddler up and started walking toward their moms. The blonde buried her face in Bellamy’s shoulder as her sobs slowly calmed down. As much as he was dreading telling Abby what happened, the boy hurried to get back to his family.
“What’s wrong?” asked Abby reaching for her daughter when she noticed them. “What happened, sweetie?”
She pulled Clarke from Bellamy’s arms and as the three years old’s cries turned to hiccups, he explained to the women how he lost Clarke for a minute. He then turned to his mom and hugged her. He felt like crying too and he needed reassurance. Octavia raised from her spot on the blanket to curl her arms around her brother’s leg.
Bellamy smiled down at her and then turned to face Clarke who was now completely calmed down. She was still hanging on her ice cream scone but more loosely than before as exhaustion took over her.
Bellamy spent the car ride back home looking at Clarke’s sleeping form. She was holding onto her favorite teddy bear and was hanging out of her car seat. Usually, the girls’ need to nap was annoying him (Couldn’t they sleep at night like everyone?) but today he was just happy Clarke wasn’t still lost in front of the ice cream stand.
II After walking up and down too many flights of stairs to count, Clarke’s legs were starting to hurt. It didn’t help that the dress she was wearing kept getting stuck everywhere making her stumbles every couple of steps.
“C’mon, Princess! We don’t have all night,” said Bellamy has she tripped once again.
“Yes, Clarke. Hurry,” added Octavia barely turning around to look at her friend, eager to get more candies. “The best candies will be gone!”
“It’s okay, I’ve got enough.”
Octavia let out a gasp at her friend’s words. At 6, the girl couldn’t even imagine how many candies were enough.
“Just go without me, I’ll stay with your mommy.”
Picking up the plastic sword from her belt, Octavia pretended to threaten Clarke.
“Okay, Princess Clarke, but if you want my candies later, know that a pirate never shares.”
Aurora patted her daughter’s head before pushing her gently to the next house telling her to stop bothering Clarke. Bellamy glanced at the blonde to make sure she wanted to stay and, at her nod, followed his sister through yet another flight of stair.
Clarke leaned slightly into Aurora’s side and let herself put more weight against the woman when she put her arm around her shoulders. The Blake’s mom then reached for Clarke’s bag along with her wand before the little girl could drop them in the middle of the sidewalk.
“Are you okay to walk, sweetheart?”
Clarke only found the energy to nod once. Aurora chuckled before following her children who were already walking toward the next house.
Half an hour later, houses were starting to shut down, out of candy. The streets emptied leaving less and less costumed people in the way. When her mom announced that it was time to go back home, Octavia gave her the bag full of candies before raising her arms up to get picked up. Clarke untangled herself from Aurora’s side and let herself fall against Bellamy.
“Not easy being a princess, huh?”
“Don’t be mean, Bell. ‘M tired.”
“Okay, Princess. Come here.”
Bellamy opened his arms and Clarke didn’t waste a second before putting her arms around his neck. She loved when Bell picked her up, she felt safe and it was useful when she was tired and her feet were hurting.
The girls fell asleep before they even made it home. Clarke’s hands gripping Bellamy’s too long hair and her dress taking too much place in his arms.
III He was going to kill them. Or maybe he wouldn’t but. Fuck. Taking care of two 15 years old wasn’t always easy. Especially not when you were 19, that Bellamy Blake could tell you.
The girls would argue that he doesn’t need to take care of them but Bellamy had grown up doing it and it’s not because they were now in high school that he would stop. Plus, now he had proof that they needed someone to look after them.
Because Bellamy was currently driving to get to some house in the middle of nowhere, at least another twenty minutes away, after he had received a call from a moderately drunk Octavia telling him he needed to pick them up.
He spotted them the moment he turned on the right street. Clarke heavily leaning against his sister who, herself, was fighting to keep her balance. Bellamy quickly parked the car before walking toward the girls. He felt like his long strides weren’t fast enough.
“What the hell, Octavia!?”
She at least had the courtesy of looking ashamed of herself. It’s not like she didn’t know she wasn’t allowed to drink when Bellamy wasn’t there. Especially not at some college kids’ party when she was supposed to be sleeping at Clarke’s place.
A little cry made him lose his focus on his sister. Clarke had definitely just noticed he was there judging by her eyes. When they had been sad and looking at the ground a few moments ago, they now shone with amusement.
Clarke made a move to get off Octavia and walk to him. She managed to take two steps before falling hard against his chest.
“Hi!”, she cheered.
Bellamy chuckled and carefully placed his arms around her to hold her up. Sure, he was still mad at them for making him worried but at least now that he knew they were both safe, he could laugh at the situation. Plus, Clarke looked pretty cute with her rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes.
“Hey. Don’t ever do that again.”
Octavia gripped his shoulders.
“You’re no fun, Bell.”
He shot his little sister a look before guiding the two girls to his car. Bellamy carefully laid Clarke down on the back seat and secured her with the two belts. She fell asleep almost immediately.
Octavia quietly settled down in the passenger seat. Bellamy took a moment to watch her before starting the car. She was paler than usual and her hair was sticking to the sides of her face.
He started the car and slowly engaged in the street, making his way back to his flat. No way he would be the one bringing a very drunk Clarke to her parents. As much as they loved him, they wouldn’t be happy to see him like this.
“What happened, O?” His voice was harder than he meant it to be. Octavia winced a little before answering.
“Clarke had a rough week. She found out Finn had a girlfriend. She’s back in town and Clarke walked in one them.”
“Fuck.”
Bellamy made a point of staring at the road ahead of him. Octavia drummed her fingers nervously on her thighs.
“She wanted to get drunk and I didn’t want her going there alone.”
“Listen, I get it. But next time you guys wanna get drunk tell me.”
She nodded a little before closing her eyes. They drove the rest of the way in a tense silence.
Bellamy parked the car and turned to look at Clarke. She was still knocked out, and hopefully, she’d stay that way until the morning. The siblings got out of the car and opened the backdoor to have access to Clarke.
Octavia bent down to unbuckled the first belt but quickly got up again, a hand against her mouth. She looked at Bellamy in panicked and he helped her sit down.
“Just breath. You moved too fast.”
He watched as Octavia took in deep breathes, staring far ahead of her to fight through the nausea. Bellamy quickly got Clarke out of the car, carefully cradling her to his chest. He slipped a hand under her neck, raising her head so it rested on his shoulder.
He turned to Octavia.
“I’m gonna get her inside, you okay? Do you need me to come get you after?”
“No, no, I’m good. Make sure she’s okay.”
Bellamy nodded once before making his way to the door. He struggled a little to get it opened but managed after a minute.
He walked slowly toward his bedroom. Normally Clarke would sleep in Octavia’s bed when she slept over but Bellamy didn’t want two hungover teenagers in the same bed the next day.
He set Clarke down on his bed before removing her shoes and her socks. He thought about removing her pants for a second but they seemed comfortable, the stretchy kind, so he didn’t touch them. He removed the comforter from under her delicately and chuckled as she turned to her side and immediately cuddled into his pillow.
Bellamy brushed away hair getting in her face. Little noises came out of Clarke’s throat. He turned to leave only to be stopped by a hand around his wrist.
“Thanks, Bell. You’re the bestest,” she muttered.
“No problem, Princess.”
Clarke let out a content sigh and nuzzled her face deeper into the pillow. Her fingers lost their strength around him quickly and he carefully guided her arm back onto the bed.
He left the room to go get advils and a glass of water. And probably a bucket too, just to be sure. He could hear small snores coming from Clarke already. Bellamy found Octavia in the bathroom, brushing her teeth. He raised his arm over her to open the cabinet behind the mirror.
“You good?”
The brush muffled her response. She spitted, rinse her mouth and turned to face him.
“Yeah. Thanks for coming pick us up. I’m sorry I worried you.”
“I’m glad you called. Don’t do it again, okay?”
“I won’t”
“Good. Go to sleep now.”
She smiled up at him and left the bathroom.
Bellamy sighed and follow her out. His girls were going to be the death of him.
IV “Bell! Where are you?”
“I’m here! I’m sorry I’m late, my students had questions after class and kept me at school longer than I expected.”
Bellamy ran toward the door, quickly showing his ticket to the teenager on door duty and directly went to the room where he knew the graduates were waiting. Sure enough, his little sister was waiting next to a vending machine, dressed in her black toga, her mortar secured on top of her head. Bellamy stopped dead in his track. He hung up and put his phone in his back pocket before advancing to his sister.
“O,” His voice cracked under the emotion. He enrobed her into a hug. “I’m so fucking proud of you.”
Octavia pushed him away playfully.
“Thanks, Big brother. I need to go back inside but I’ll see you after I walked the stage, yeah?”
Bellamy nodded and hushed her with the others. He left to gain his seat, shooting the room full of excited chatter a last glance.
After hours of watching hundreds of graduates walk the stage and finally throwing their mortars as high as they could, Bellamy made his way to the front door. His head was hurting from all the noise and the lack of food. It’s not that Bellamy wasn’t happy to be there, no, he was overwhelmed with pride for his two favorite girls. But things quickly got old considering Blake and Griffin were announced pretty much at the beginning of the ceremony. Plus, since he was so late, there wasn’t any spot near Clarke’s parents and his mom. He had to keep all his snarky comments for himself.
“Bellamy!” The man turned around to face the voice. Jake was waving his hand and walking toward him.
“Hey, Jake!” The two of them hugged briefly as Aurora and Abby made their way through the crowd.
The women barely had time to kiss Bellamy’s cheeks before a blonde storm collided into his chest. His arms acted by themselves, curling around Clarke’s waist and lifting her off the ground. He kept her there, crushed to his chest and squealing for a long moment before he set her down. He kept his hands on her hips prohibiting her to get too far away from him.
Clarke was beaming up at him. Her hair was even more curly than usual and little braids were forming a crown around her head. She had heavy eye make up that was a little smudged from the heat. Bellamy wasn’t used to seeing her like this even after twenty years of friendship. He was used to her bedheads when she crashed in Octavia’s room, to her in sweat pants and huge shirts covered in paint. But here she was, wearing a blue dress that reached just above her knees. Bellamy knew he was in love with Clarke Griffin. And he knew that he had been for a little while. But seeing her like this, proud and happy and beautiful made him fall for her all over again.
“Can you actually believe it!?”
Bellamy blinked twice before he realized Clarke was looking at him. He could tell she was expecting an answer.
“Hm. I missed that sorry.”
“I’ve been talking for at least two minutes, Bell. What are you even thinking about?”
“I’m just proud you guys graduated and all. It’s so weird. Plus, you’re both gonna have awesome careers now. A child psychologist and an art teacher.” Bellamy could feel his eyes filled with tears as he talked. At least he found an excuse as to why he wasn’t listening. He choked a little on his worlds as he continued. “You both worked so hard to get this.”
“Thanks. You know you worked a lot to get your degree too, right? If you could do it, of course Octavia and me could.” Clarke’s tone is teasing but her eyes shined with tears. “Anyways. As I’ve been saying-”
That’s when Octavia decides to emerge from wherever she was.
“Did you tell them?!” she screamed, hugging her friend from behind.
“I was about to!”
Bellamy looked at Clarke expectantly. She still seemed happy and proud so whatever she had to tell them; it must have been good.
She turned around to get their parents’ attention. They excused themselves from their conversation and quickly noticed Octavia standing next to them. They exchanged hugs and congratulations with the girls before Octavia hushed them to give Clarke the spotlight.
“I got an internship starting next September at Arcadia High. I may not have a master like Bell does but they agreed to take me considering I double majored!”
Excited chatter started once again. Bellamy was frozen in place while his family hugged in front of him for a second time. Clarke turned to him. She was crying a little but her smile was the brightest he had ever seen.
“At Arcadia High?”
She nodded biting her bottom lip.
“You’re going to teach with me?”
Clarke nodded again. He teeth were pushing hard into her lip like she was actually worried he’d be mad about having the chance of seeing her everyday.
Bellamy had to force himself not to do something stupid. Like kissing her. That would be very stupid. Instead, he made two long strides to get to her and raised her from the ground. Like earlier, he turned on himself a few times making Clarke’s legs fly around them. They nearly hit Octavia in the process but Bellamy didn’t manage to feel guilty about it. He was so happy. His best friend was going to teach. In the same school as him.
Instead of setting her down like he should’ve do, Bellamy moved his hands from Clarke’s waist to under her thighs. She responded automatically, curling her legs around him and resting them on his hips. Her arms tightened around his shoulders.
Clarke hugged him again. She buried her nose into the creek of his neck, running it across his skin softly, making him shiver. Bellamy mimicked her; his face hidden into her hair he whispered:
“I’m so fucking happy for you Clarke. You’re the best.”
“You are too.”
Bellamy chuckled and pulled back a little to see her properly. In their position, her face was leveled with his. Restraining himself from kissing her was even harder now that her lips were a couple of miserable inches away.
“You know, it’s been awhile since I carried you.”
Clarke hummed a little. She turned her gaze to the space between their chests. Her hands made their way from his shoulders to his hair. Her fingers played with his curls for a moment before she answered.
“You could start doing it again. I wouldn’t mind.”
Bellamy’s words died in his throat. Was she flirting?
“C’mon guys! I’m hungry!”
Octavia’s cry broke the moment and soon Bellamy was letting go of Clarke much to his chagrin. The air was somewhat awkward between the two of them for a split second before Octavia slipped between them and put her arms around their shoulders. She had to raise one of her arms considerably higher than the other to get around Bellamy’s but her little struggle was enough to set the best friends back into their usual easiness.
Bellamy and Clarke shared a smile over Octavia’s head before the blonde turned to his little sister and started chatting with her. Bellamy looked behind him to see the Griffin and his mom walking with them to the exit. His eyes caught Jake’s and the older man looked between him and his daughter before sending a wink in Bellamy’s direction. Bellamy could feel his cheeks turned red and hot. He turned his attention back to the newly graduates.
He knew he was in love with Clarke but he wasn’t ready for other people to know just yet.
V To be completely honest, living with Clarke was a mess. She seemed to always forget to take out the trash and do the dishes, her things would get literally everywhere leaving paint strikes on their way at least half the time, the bathroom caddy was overflowing with the many bottles she apparently needed and her cat never understood the concept of privacy.
But the worst part, Bellamy found out, was that she had a problem with clothes.
“They get in the way, Bell!” Clarke had argued the first time he had mentioned it. “I don’t see why I have to wear pants in my own house.”
Which, to be fair, was understandable. Bellamy himself tended to avoid shirts when he could but. Fuck. Seeing her half naked around the house made it too easy for Bellamy to pretend that they were more than just best friends.
Too easy to pretend he could just walk to the sink where she was currently standing and put his arms around her waist and kiss her neck.
Instead, he moved to the fridge and drank large gulps of milk straight from the carton. He looked at the closed door far too long before taking a breath and turning toward her. Bellamy forced his eyes to stay on her face but he couldn’t help but glance at her bared legs a couple of times. He growled out a curse when Clarke caught his stare and smirked.
“Like the view?” her tone was teasing but it didn’t stop Bellamy from feeling ashamed.
“Sorry,” he mumbled, blushing. He closed his eyes and shook his head slightly.
Bellamy heard Clarke putting down the plate she was washing into the drying station. He heard her turned off the water. Heard her taking a few steps toward him after a moment of complete silence.
But he felt more than heard when she whispered a single sentence against his chin. Her breath tickling his neck and smelling fruity like the tea she liked to take in the mornings when she had a day off.
“Do you like it, Bellamy?”
The way she said it, low and hopeful, made him open his eyes again. He let roamed on her body, pretending to analyse it. Half of it was the make fun of her because of course he liked the view, who wouldn’t. The other half, well. If he was allowed to check her out, he wouldn’t miss his chance.
Clarke’s blonde hair was a mess, half of it pulled away from her face and holding up by a paintbrush. Her eyes were sparkling, there was some blue paint near her ear and some more near the mole above her lips.
She was wearing an oversized white shirt with a too big collar and a few colorful spots due to fresh paint. Now that she was facing him, he could read the few words written on it. “NO PANTS ARE THE BEST PANTS” it said in bold black letter. How fitting, Bellamy thought as his gaze fell on her bare thighs.
He was still looking at her feet, his eyes stuck on her bright pink nail polish when he felt her damp hands rest on his cheeks. Clarke pulled him up slowly until his eyes were leveled with hers. She tilted her head to the side, silently asking for an answer.
“Yeah,” Bellamy growled out. His voice was lower than he expected it to be. “Yeah, I really do.”
“Good.”
He felt Clarke’s lips on his before he realized what was happening. He felt her tongue push against his lips, impatient, when he took more than a few seconds to react. Bellamy started moving instantly.
His mouth opened and his tongue fought with Clarke’s for a moment before letting her win. His hands flew to her hips and squeezed the soft flesh. She let out a soft sigh and curled her arms around his shoulder and let her fingers curl into his hair. She pulled a little and Bellamy answered by moving his hands lower, high on her thighs, and pushed her up.
His original plan was to get her to sit on the counter and to stand between her legs. But Clarke’s legs circled his waist and the impact made Bellamy loose balance. He took a couple of steps back and soon he was stuck between Clarke and the fridge. Her body was completely pressed against his and he never wanted to move again.
Clarke pulled away first, gasping for air. She moved back a little like she wanted to have a better view of Bellamy. It gave him the opportunity to observe her. Her eyes were bright and huge, analyzing him the same way he was analyzing her.
After a moment, the tension between the two of them broke and they started laughing softly. Clarke let her forehead fall against Bellamy’s shoulder. He kissed her hair, still smiling.
“You know, as much as I love carrying you, I would much rather lying down right now.”
“You just got up, Bellamy. You don’t need to sleep just yet.” Her tone was teasing but she was biting her bottom lip, anticipating.
“Yeah, no. Not planning on sleeping. If that’s good with you.”
She gave him a quick peck.
“Definitely good with me.”
