reading the most iconic creepypastas for the very first time and reviewing them (part 1)
surprisingly, i never went through a creepypasta phase when i was younger.
so now, in the year of our lord 2022, i decided to finally deep dive into this world and share my thoughts on them.
shall we begin?
(note: i read all of them through here!)
who was phone?: ...?/10. you guys should've seen my reaction when i read this and later found out it's the first creepypasta (trollpasta?) to ever exist. what the actual fuck. this is hysterical.
white with red: 6/10. pretty okay, i guess. way too simple, though.
he who should really not be named (candlejack): 4/10. diversity win! the demonic spirit who will gouge your eyes out is non-binary!
polybius: 7/10. kinda generic, but still a fun read.
the dionaea house: 9/10. i don't know what i was expecting when i started reading this, but THAT surely wasn't it. holy fucking shit, that was good!
the portraits (a.k.a. the cabin in the woods): 1/10. meh.
the rake: 6/10. not bad, but it felt a little incomplete.
candle cove: 7/10. shout out to horror stories that involve childhood nostalgia, gotta be one of my favorite genders.
1999: 8/10. same as last one.
gateway of the mind: 5/10. hm, could've been better.
slenderman: 7/10. ohohoho okay, NOW we're getting to the fandom territory. NOW we're getting to the actual juicy stuff. we're off to a good start!
smile dog: 8/10. honestly, if i were in mary e.'s shoes, giving the diskette to literally anyone else would be my immediate reaction 🙃
dead bart: 7/10. ah. the first ever "cartoon lost episode" creepypasta, i assume. and it even features the whole 'simpsons predictions' thing. sweet.
suicidemouse.avi: 7/10. ok, so i've actually seen the video for this when i was a kid. i didn't know it was based on a creepypasta! huh.
the statue: 0/10. bruh, whoever wrote this one wasn't even trying 💀
licking: 0/10. this one doesn't even make sense wtf
squidward's suicide: 8/10. another one i've already seen when i was younger. it aged pretty decently imo.
the theater: 3/10. "swirly head man" sounds like a villain's name from a pbs kids show lol
mr. widemouth: 9/10. this one was actually pretty enjoyable! why isn't it more famous??
herobrine: 6/10. okay so, here's the thing: i was never interested in minecraft. never played it, probably never will. but i had a childhood friend who was OBSESSED with it and every now and then i would hear him saying "herobrine". i just assumed it was like a really important item you can get in the game or, idk, something along those lines. it wasn't until last year that i found out it's a fucking creepypasta character 😭

im so obsessed with finding out what other people find legitimately creepy or scary, specifically in terms of media (not like phobias). most horror movies don’t really scare me because im so invested in horror as an art and storytelling medium, but im really legitimately freaked out by the lady in the radiator scenes from “eraserhead”. the popular horror scp’s do nothing for me but the ones about the people who are trapped in the recording of a basketball game and the sopranos dvd where u can use the remote to travel around the show’s world legit send chills down my spine. the end of the twilight zone episode “time enough at last” gives me the weirdest, gut-wrenching feeling. everyone is so unique in what specifically makes their skin crawl

With the 48 hour horror film project kicking off in two days, I'm settling myself into a particular headspace by revisiting my childhood and teen years because horror... is where I started. Not Friday The 13th horror but Edgar Allen Poe. H.P. Lovecraft.
Alfred Hitchcock.
Even my first pair of books from Scholastic in grade school were horror story collections.
Not sure why... but that's how I rolled back in the day. And one of my big takeaways of that experience, looking back from my current vantage point, is that horror existed entirely in my head. The suspense, the scares, didn't have to take place on a screen. They could play directly inside my head.
These days you can look up the kind of thing I'm remembering on YouTube any time of the day or night: scary stories. Over the last years, I was reacquainted with my childhood experiences through a series called Creepypasta. But seriously. Search for scary stories or horror stories on YouTube, and you'll get the drift. They’re not short films or streaming content, you see.
They're sound only. The stories are either narrated or the voices of the characters carry the narrative or a combination of both.
That's now, of course. Any time. Day or night. When I was a kid, though, there was only one way to hear these stories: radio. In my case, transistor radio.
What's a transistor radio, you ask?
Well, they're cheap radio receivers that fit in your hand. Battery powered. Portable. A.M. reception only. A product of the late fifties, they were hugely popular through the sixties and seventies until boom boxes made them obsolete in the eighties.
I was a kid in the seventies, so... I owned a small, black, transistor radio at the same time I was mad for scary stories. And a local station had a show. Certain nights. Horror stories. Definitely after my bedtime.
So.
I'd hide my transistor radio under my pillow and, when the time came for the show to air, I'd plug in an earpiece (one ear only), jam it in my ear, and turn the radio on. No need to dial it in. There was only one thing I ever listened to.
And there, in the dark, under the covers of my bed, I'd listen to these scary stories.
Okay no. I didn't listen to them. I experienced them.
I was there. Locked into a dark narrative entering through one ear... but happening in every corner of my brain.
I was hooked.
Later, after my transistor radio phase passed, maybe this was late jr. high, maybe high school or later... I caught a promo for a dramatic presentation of Stephen King's "The Mist". On the radio. In 360 degree sound.
So when the time came, I plugged my dad's headsets into my boom box, dialed the station in and, at the appointed time, the room I was in, the house, everything around me receded as "The Mist" asserted itself all over my brain.
I was there.
And only there in that Maine grocery store.
The sound effects, by the way, were frightening. I can't imagine what my parents thought... but I was sitting at the dining room or kitchen table next to my boom box gripping my dad's headphones tightly with both hands on either side my head.
It was an immersive experience, through and through. It was a finely crafted experience that captured all of me. Suspense and tension, after all, are transmitted through muscle. So there's definitely a physical dimension to the experience along with an emotional one, along with a conscious and subconscious one.
And it's an experience I've never forgotten.
But definitely.
Definitely it’s an experience I hope to command as an editor and sound designer this weekend.

Creepypasta/MH - Doing Halloween Stuff With Them :)
(Characters: Tim/Masky, Eyeless Jack, Jeff the Killer, Nina the Killer, Jane the Killer, Ticci Toby)
Tumblr media
Tim/Masky
Hear me out... corn maze
I believe that Tim enjoys a good puzzle every now and again
He loves trying to figure things out (specifically when there's nothing at risk)
Getting to show off his navigational skills is also a major plus
He just likes to impress you, even if it comes off as annoying sometimes
"See? What'd I tell you? The exit's right there."
Though he does like the satisfaction of completing the maze, what he really treasures is that time you spend together figuring it out
Once you finally find the exit, you'll celebrate with hot cocoa :D
Eyeless Jack
This man LOVES carving pumpkins
He goes all out; definitely one of those people who makes the crazy intricate designs that look like they take hours
He'll love it if you help him!
If you have a steady hand, he'll let you do the details
If you don't, he'll task you with gutting the pumpkin/handing him tools
You guys collaborate on multiple pumpkins throughout the month, setting them in random locations for everyone to see
If there's a design you want to do, just show it to him, there's no question he'll be down
If it's too simplistic, he'll try to add more details
"Ooh, Jack, look at this one. Can we try to re-create it?"
"Of course! Though I do have some ideas on how it can be improved..."
Jeff the Killer
Another pumpkin carving enjoyer
But for a different reason... a very different reason
He loves the goriness of gutting the pumpkins
He couldn't care less about making actual designs, he just wants to get messy stabbing the pumpkin and gouging out its insides
That being said, he'll 100% gut your pumpkin if you ask him (he'll probably end up doing it even if you don't ask)
It's honestly a little disturbing watching him work
He just gets this look in his eye...
"You, uh... you doing okay there, Jeff?"
"Hm? Yup! Never better!! Say, can you grab the big knife from the kitchen for me?"
Nina the Killer
You best bet she's the costume queen
Spends the whole year planning matching horror-themed costumes
She'll settle for no less than creativity and perfection
High-quality props and articles only!! She'll even make them herself if she has to!
You can expect to spend at least an hour in front of the mirror while she does your makeup/adjusts your clothes
She's an SFX makeup legend, loves incorporating as much gore into your costume as possible
Don't ask why it's so realistic (it's not like she knows how the wound would look if it was real or anything)
"Wow, Nina... It's almost like I can feel it! It's so real!"
"No, no. If you were feeling it, you would be screaming pretty loud right now."
You can also expect to attend multiple parties where you show off your costumes
You guys dominate costume competitions
Jane the Killer
Horror movies!!
Specifically, making fun of them
You both pick apart the plot, the characters, the dialogue, the special effects, everything
No horror film is safe from your scrutiny
If you're the type to get scared during horror movies, her snide comments will help distract you
"Ooh, I can't look!"
"Oh, come on. Look—I bet they used corn syrup for that fake blood. It's way too thick."
When the movie ends, you're both feeling more amused than scared
She doesn't like to see horror films in theaters because she doesn't get to make commentary, plus she doesn't want to "waste" money on a "stupid tryhard-horror flick"
She'd much rather dig up some old indie DVD/VCR and have a home movie night with you
Ticci Toby
Halloween sweets are his bread and butter
Candy apples, fun-sized candy bars, candy corn, pumpkin bread...
He would perish if you made anything homemade for him
Spends the whole month gorging on sweets almost as fast as he can get his hands on them
He will not share with anyone but you
And even you only get a small portion of his goodies
Robs at least one child on Halloween night, mostly for the candy but also because he likes scaring little kids
"Where did you get all that candy?"
"Got it from a little birdy. By that I mean a kid in Falcon cosplay."
"Toby! ... save me the (favorite candy)."

I absolutely adore Lucifer, right? His depressed theater kid with ADHD energy is so up my alley you don't even know, he is ADORABLE yet so BADASS!
And for the longest time I didn't care about Alastor that much. He was a bit too, like, Joker-coded creepypasta edgy OC for my taste
But Hazbin Hotel fandom has taught me to like him. Like, people analyzing and picking him apart, showing different (not necessarily canon) sides of him with their art. And, most of all, RadioApple. I frickin' love RadioApple, that kinda bickering enemies/rivals to lovers who are secretly soft for each other talks straight into my ZoSan loving heart
Anyways, this post is me saying that Alastor's cool with me. It also helps that I learned he wasn't a cannibal when he was alive and actually had a reason behind killing, besides just liking it or something as psychotic

Headcanons about Winx and Specialists <3
When Sky is stressed/worried, he absent-mindedly traces the scars on Brandon’s hand.
Stella wants to try theater/drama club. C’mon, look at her – she is a drama kid, born and bred.
Bloom definitely had a punk faze. (Semi-canon? Look at her ex-bf Andy and Selina, and tell me she wasn’t at least a little edgy in middle school.)
Bloom never lost her interest in mythology, but during the ‘punk’ phase, she shifted her focus towards origins of monsters & creepypasta, and – well, that particular interest continued into adulthood. Except her scale for normalcy has been tampered with and what she considers fun facts disturb the shit out of the Winx and the Specialists.
Musa, while enrolled in Alfea, has had regular music gigs at a Magix cafe. For a very long time, she wouldn’t allow the Winx girls to come and see her during the gigs, afraid that they would glean something too personal from her songs.
Riven and later, Timmy, are one of the only people allowed to come with no invitation required.
Tecna, who had been subjected to epic highs and lows of musical education on Zenith, sometimes helps Musa compose and edit her songs. It’s both a way to bond with her very artistic roomie and a way to have fun with a discipline that was forced upon her. The two even start performing together at some point!
(Tecna refuses to sing; it’s a good decision, she’s horrible at it. But she plays keys and is learning drums!)
Out of the whole friend group, Timmy, Riven, Aisha and Bloom are the most competitive. They are also all sore losers.
Bloom is a coffee girl, Stella is a vitamins-only “I don’t ruin my body with those filthy drinks” wellness kind of girl, Tecna and Musa are energy drinks girlies, Aisha is a power nap girlie. Flora snorts drugs.
Brandon and Sky switching identities was prompted by an assassination attempt made on Sky. Assassins sneaked into his quarters while he was sleeping and tried to slit his throat. While they did manage to cut the skin on his neck, Brandon, who was sleeping over, woke up and together they stalled the assailant until the guards finally showed up. That’s when Brandon was made Sky’s squire.
Sky has a thin scar on his neck because of that.
Tecna doesn’t notice it when she cries. She never makes a sound either: tears just start leaking out of the corners of her eyes, with the rest of Tecna’s face remaining completely unchanged.
Flora's love language is gift giving and she loooves spoiling her friends with presents.
Aisha loves imitating people and Musa finds it hilarious. Stella stakes her life on being better than her at impressions (she really isn’t)
Brandon and Sky definitely kissed a few times.
Everybody knows about that.
