what's the Arranged Marriage AU 👀
okay okay so
Late last year on my Shadowgast server someone bandied about the idea of an arranged marriage AU, and my mind—which had heretofore wrinkled its figurative nose at that trope, grabbed the idea and fuckin’ ran wild with it.
The setup is this:
As part of their peace talks, the Empire and the Dynasty agree to arrange a diplomatic wedding. The Empire chooses Caleb Widogast, one of the band of mercenaries responsible for the exposure and downfall of Trent Ikithon—honestly a bit of a thorn in their side because he’s a real firebrand and the crown (read: Cerberus Assembly) worry about him & his upsetting the balance of power even further, so they offer him this great opportunity to become a symbol of peace and new beginnings for his country, and he accepts.
The Dynasty chooses their Shadowhand, Essek Thelyss—honestly a bit of a thorn in their side because he has a lot of borderline heretical thoughts and wants to do a lot of borderline heretical research. So they offer him this great opportunity to prove his loyalty to the Dynasty and the Luxon, and he accepts.
The trouble is: Caleb, himself the product of an arranged marriage, is optimistic that love will blossom in their union, but Essek, whose culture views arranged marriage as little more than a strategic political partnership, thinks they should each just keep to themselves.
And the trouble is: they’re both harboring some big damn secrets…and Ikithon is still at large.
I’m currently working on outlining Act 4 of 5 and that document is sitting at 28,820 words so far—and I need to copy some stuff over to it from Discord, where I’ve been workshopping it. Gods only know how long it will be once it’s fully written, but if I’m lucky with convergences of time and spoons, I hope to finish it sometime this year.

In the Danny is Damian’s brother trope what if instead of Damian not telling the family about Danny wasn’t because of grief or shame or any of the more commonly used reasons for his silence. What if it was because he heard about how his father talked about Jason after his death, focusing and exaggerating the negative. That he was violent, angry, never listened to orders but in some iterations and popular fanon is that Jason was a cheerful and studious Robin.
What if while compiling info and researching the former robins during his tumultuous introduction he saw what kind of robin Jason was, good with kids and victims. Talking about his favorite books while on patrol and similar. Reminding Damian of his most Beloved brother.
Then he finds out about how Bruce talked about Jason after he died. Using him as an example as what not to do, erasing his good traits and just using him as a cautionary tale of what happens when you don’t follow orders. Just like what Ra’s said about Danny.
So he didn’t tell the family, not out of guilt or grief. But because his father stripped away Jason’s positive traits after death, the son he chose, adopted and loved. Who when he failed because he was a child led astray by his mother. What would he do to his brother, who loved the stars and excelled in stealth, who was quite in his kills but had no lust for killing.
Whether or not Bruce would do this to Danny’s memory doesn’t matter. B’s actions are gonna affect how Damian views his father even years after the initial actions. Because Damian will protect his brothers memory from being twisted even by their father.

Talia found Yasmin's hide out only two days after the bomb.
It wasn't easy. Yasmin had hidden herself well - her monthly reports had never mentioned an acquaintanceship with Vladimir Masters, the absolute gall of that girl - in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin. She bypassed the few security measures with ease, eventually finding her daughter sitting at a kitchen table, hyperventilating.
"What happened?" Talia's voice was cold and demanding.
"The-" Yasmin gasped before stealing herself. "The Fentons are dead."
"I know the Fentons are dead." Talia circled the girl. "One split navel to throat, the other strangled. What. Happened?"
"The Fentons discovered their son was a Meta. Specifically, they thought he had been replaced with the extradimentional species they study." She took a deep breath. "By the time I had discovered their actions, Daniel was... dissected on a table."
Talia closed her eyes. She knew from Yasmin's reports that she'd been acting as the Fenton child's primary caretaker since her adoption and a fondness had developed. "Yasmin-"
"Don't, Mother." She snapped. "Don't act like this is anything less than a tragedy."
"I know-"
"He was a child-"
"Everything's been taken care of," Talia said. "As far as the authorities are concerned, Jasmine Fenton died in that explosion you caused. You need to return now-"
"No!" Yasmin bolted to her feet, glaring at Talia. "He's dead, Mother! An innocent child, the child I raised as my own, is dead because I couldn't protect him! Don't you dare try to sweep this under the rug like... like Danny was something shameful! I'm not leaving! I have to-"
Time Out.
Yasmin shut her mouth mid-sentence, giving Talia time to convince her off her self-destructive path.
"What happened to Daniel is a tragedy, Yasmin. But wallowing in grief and what-ifs only leads to further pain." Talia sighed. "The Fentons and the research you were so fascinated with are gone now. You made sure of that. It's time for you to return home and put that knowledge to use."
Yasmin stared down at her hands. Odd that Talia hadn't noticed, but Yasmin's hands cradled a small, dark blue jewel, polished into a smooth, oblong oval. It glittered under the candlelight, like stars in the sky.
Yasmin swallowed the rock and spoke, refusing to acknowledge what she'd just done. "You are right, Mother. The time of Jasmine Fenton is gone now." She stared straight at Talia, no trace of fear in her gaze. For a moment, Talia wondered where her child had gone. Yasmin never met her eyes unless prompted to when she was growing up. Now she was met with a younger version of herself with cheap dyed-red hair, with the same level of determination that made Talia the Right Hand of the Demon Head. "I will mourn for Danny... on my own time. For now, what is my mission?"
Talia studied her daughter. There was a reason why she'd hidden the girl so far out of the way of her Father and her son. Yasmin was a strong fighter, but had her father's heart, despite her willingness to kill. She'd always reminded Talia of a bodyguard rather than an assassin, but Yasmin wanted to go her own way, wanted to study everything. For years, Talia had indulged her daughter, but now it was time for her to return to the fold.
"For the next month, you will be training to remove any weakness the Fentons may have left in you. After that, you will be guarding an ally for me."
"Which ally?"
"A boy a few years older than you, a son of the Bat." Yasmin didn't react to the mention of her father. Good. "His mind is infirm, but by the time you finish your training, he will be ready to strike a blow against Gotham. You will act as his guard during his training and act as my spy while he's in Gotham. Do you understand?"
For a moment, Yasmin's hand brushed her stomach before she forced her fists to her sides. "Yes, Mother. I will do as you ask."

can i b real with you guys. i think the eldest daughter thing has lost all meaning..... many of these guys are simply eldest sons. eldest daughter syndrome needs an inherent lack of trust and respect despite all responsibility placed on them. entitlement is very much eldest son behaviour. aegon is not eldest daughter that man is an eldest son for sure. kendall roy.... ill not speak on that man. i know a piranha pond when i see it. but know he is part of this post.

"For the good of those who see in us, the defense of our beloved people, whom we love above all else and whose love we reciprocate, requires us to use our children as instruments and bargaining tools to obtain the necessary ends." — Rodrigo Borgia (Lucrezia Giovane, directed by Luciano Ercoli)

i cant stop thinking about what if pregnancy was really hard for YZY.
what if her labor was so difficult that her doctors encouraged her to not even try again (the impossible be damned) despite having a daughter for a firstborn.
what if she pushed (and JFM was amenable, as he often was then) for her daughter to be made heir, only for JYL to struggle with foundation building so much that they worried she'd never reach core formation.
unsuitable.
it goes from improbable to nigh impossible for yanli to be sect leader.
so YZY decides to try again, its been years since the first time. surely she's recovered more than enough. if she can not make her body do even this then. then.
she will do this.
imagine her suffering another dangerous child birth, only to have another daughter.
and never once does her love for her children waver but she could cry, honestly cry because why could nothing ever be easy for her.
and then she has a thought.
it would be so easy. she could force the midwives to take an oath of secrecy. she would have to be more hands on in the raising of her child than most others in her position, but it wouldn't hurt to be seen as doting...
no one would ever know.
That year, the jianghu celebrated the birth of Jiang Fengmian's son and heir, Jiang Cheng.

for the wip game, what's the story with [Outline] The Son and the Heir (Shadowgast Arranged Marriage)? 👀
Oh man, so. This is absolutely not a trope I normally go for, but yon back we were talking about it on AifL and I got struck with an Idea, and I just kinda ran with it.
The setup is: as part of their armistice agreements, the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty arrange a marriage to stand as a symbol of their treaty. The Empire sends Caleb Widogast, notable member of the multinational mercenary group who brought to light the heinous crimes and abuses of former Archmage of Civil Influence Trent Ikithon, to be wed to Shadowhand Essek Thelyss, notable dunamantic prodigy and youngest soul to ever hold the title. If these selections also serve as a way to conveniently keep two known iconoclasts busy, so much the better.
Caleb goes into the arrangement full of hope. His parents had been an arranged marriage and they grew to love each other dearly. He’s looking forward to learning about his new husband and homeland. The fact that he’s gorgeous and a powerful wizard only sweeten the deal.
Essek, however, never wanted to marry. He got railroaded into accepting the offer to save face in the eyes of the court. He doesn’t want someone else in his home, he doesn’t want someone with ties to the Cerberus Assembly getting close, and he most certainly has no intention of doing something as embarrassing as falling in love.
The Son and the Heir is a story about a frigid heart that thaws, then breaks, and is mended stronger than it was before.
Send me a WIP title for more!

co-high kings galadriel & celeborn
since elrond doesn't want the kingship, galadriel & celeborn are the eldest in middle-earth of the lines of Olwe and Elmo respectively. olwe is older but hes the king of the teleri not specifically doriath sindar so there might be some dispute between which line the sindarin high kingship jumps to, but they very conveniently happen to already be married and so can skip all that and just be twice the headache for sauron

[Do you think the Siege at Forli was the downfall for his character?] [...] The one issue I’ve always had is I wanted to elongate certain sections. Every episode has so much stuff going on and so many great meetings whether it’s the fight between Juan and Cesare or Lucrezia meeting her different lovers or it’s the pope talking to different people about political machinations. I always wanted to have Juan in Spain. I wanted to have a month where I could go over with my own unit of shooting where he finds himself a wife, but that’s not to be.

desperately need people to understand that alicent is a victim but she’s also an abuser and a perpetrator
that she actively makes choices to harm other women because of jealousy and envy and the greed deep in her bones because submitting to suffering didn’t get her what those women fight to grasp for themselves.
she is absolutely a victim, in show.
that doesn’t change that she abused rhaenyra and her children, her own son, most likely helaena given how she flinches every time her mother touches her, and is actively weaponizing the patriarchy of westeros against other women- rhaenyra primarily, but also mysaria and dyana.
she isn’t the moral, righteous force of good that even she thinks she is, she’s a wounded woman directing all of the rot, pain, and fury inside her at the wrong people and forces.
#anti team green stans#anti team green#anti alicent hightower stans#i don’t wanna say it’s anti alicent bc honestly it’s more ‘accept her for who she is bc she’s so much more complex and interesting when you#but i made this bc someone genuinely tried to say that the reason people hate her is that they don’t see her as a victim#most rational people know show!alicent is a victim#it’s the point that’s she’s an abuser as well#that makes them dislike her#that she’s a hypocrite and a traitor#i don’t even like young alicent bc i don’t at all think she was a good friend to rhaenyra#‘it’s not your place to question the plots of lords and men’ to the named heir#dismisses rhaenyra’s hopes and idealism entirely out of hand#is baffled that rhaenyra is more worried for her fathers happiness and mother’s wellbeing than her position#she knew as early as ep 3 that otto was conspiring against rhaenyra and never told anyone#condemns ‘targaryen customs’ only to wed her daughter to her son even younger than she was when otto dangled her before viserys#acts entitled to rhaenyras secrets whilst condemning and judgemental even though she did not give rhaenyra that same courtesy#made no attempt at apology for the insensitive comment of aegon’s birth#though rhaenyra DID try to apologize for the ‘imprisoned in a castle’ line and tried to comfort her#uses her power as queen to push past the space rhaenyra is trying to create because she feels heartbroken and betrayed#rhaenyra took part in alicent’s culture with prayer at alicent’s urging because she cared about alicent and alicent was trying to help her#alicent is never once shown to return that favor instead condemning it for ‘queerness’ and growing to later#erase and remove all targaryen and valyrian heraldry from the red keep to replace with her own#like alicent is a victim and i DO have empathy for her. but i don’t like her and never will#especially not after the way her stans behave#she deserved better than otto’s machinations and viserys’…. viserysness#but that can also be true whilst i condemn her actions and behaviors

Jon Snow's Perpetual Princehood
Promise me, she had cried, in a room that smelled of blood and roses. Promise me, Ned. The fever had taken her strength and her voice had been faint as a whisper, but when he gave her his word, the fear had gone out of his sister's eyes.
"Mother." There was a sharpness in Robb's tone. "You forget. My father had four sons."
"The Night's Watch will make for Hardhome. I ride to Winterfell alone, unless…" Jon paused. "… is there any man here who will come stand with me?" The roar was all he could have hoped for, the tumult so loud that the two old shields tumbled from the walls.
