Gerd Katter, his gender certificate signed by Magnus Hirschfeld and his transvestite passport issued by the police based on Hirschfeld's certificate.
The certificate says:
"The patient Eva Katter, born on March 14, 1910, residing in Berlin-Britz Muthesiushof 8, known personally, is in clinical terms a transvestite. To maintain her mental well-being and her ability to work, it is necessary that she is enabled to wear clothing of the male gender, which corresponds to her nature."
The passport says:
“The worker Eva Katter, born on March 14, 1910, and residing in Britz at Muthesiushof 8, is known here as someone who wears male clothing.”
Gerd Katter remained an admirer of Hirschfeld throughout his life and donated these documents (among others) to the Magnus Hirschfeld Society in 1985.
These documents are from 1928, which is a few years after Hirschfeld coined "transsexualismus" but as we can see here, he was still using "transvestite" to describe what we'd understand as a trans man. This may just been because the term was more widely understood, or maybe the distinction was considered quite technical at the time.

🏕 Camp Lovers Lake - Chapter Five 🏕
An Eddie Munson x Female Reader summer camp story. Set just before the beginning of season 3 of Stranger Things, with a few diversions from the original plot of the series.
🏕 Chapters List
Pairing and tropes • Eddie Munson x Henderson Female Reader - fluff, forced proximity, slightly slow burn, summer camp clichés ♥︎
Summary • June, 1985. Close to the city of Hawkins, Indiana, the placid waters of Lovers Lake stand as the perfect background for the homonymous summer camp, where you’re about to be a counselor for the last time before senior year and then, hopefully, college. Your brother Dustin Henderson won’t be with you this year, as he’s chosen to attend Camp Know Where until July - but with your best friend Robin Buckley at your side and the unexpected addition of Steve Harrington to your duo, the upcoming months seem to promise endless fun and exciting adventures nonetheless. However, as you get closer to Eddie Munson, resident metalhead and drug dealer who’s been forced by his uncle to work at Camp Lovers Lake after another missed graduation, your plans for the summer might have to go in an unexpected direction.
Warnings • Cursing, possible mentions and/or depictions of violence, sexually suggestive language. Having no idea where this is going myself, you’ll need to be 18+ to read this fic just in case!
Chapter notes • Driven by desperation, I managed to finish this chapter exactly before leaving for my summer holidays ✨ Be patient with the slow burn, it will be worth it I promise! Also, if you can spot the little movie-related Easter egg I put in this chapter, let me know ;)
Chapter word count: 6.7k

After the bonfire, you, Steve and Robin start hanging out with Gareth, Jeff and Eddie more and more every day - and time starts running just a little bit faster.
In the following days, even if you’re often paired with other counselors on your different tasks, you always find a way to spend some time together. You have now reclaimed your own spot at the counselors' table in the Headquarters, where you all sit together both at lunch and dinner - during which you’ve discovered Gareth’s pure disdain for vegetables and Eddie’s preference for chocolate cake over apple pie.
Sometimes, you even find each other hanging out together outside one of your cabins before bedtime, sitting on the creaky, wooden steps of the tiny porch in the late evening warmth, with crickets chirping in the background as Robin snickers at Jeff’s jokes or Eddie comes up with a witty remark at Steve’s attitude. In those moments, you look at them in the dim light of the sunset and your heart warms a little as you realize that becoming friends with a couple of nerdy metalheads and an ex-popular heartthrob who just graduated high school is not what you expected for the summer - but it’s way better than you thought.
And thank god you’ve made friends with a group of musicians, you think as you now stride towards dinner with a couple of scribbled paper sheets and a pen under your arm, because you desperately need all their songwriting skills right now.
As the main door opens under the push of your hands and you start scanning the room once you get in, it doesn’t take much for you to find your friends. They’re sitting at the usual table (your table, you think with a smile) and as you make your way past the other campers to reach them, you feel your cheeks blush lightly and a soft smile bloom on your lips as you notice that Eddie’s there, too.
Well, of course he is - why wouldn’t he? But, even if you've all started hanging out together whenever you can, every time you catch a glimpse of his messy hair and bright grin, you still can’t help but be pleasantly surprised at how he wiped the idea you had of him completely clear now that you’ve gotten to know him better. After the grim (and probably prejudiced) description Steve made of him during the first camp dinner, you pictured him as a dark, dangerous guy with a troubled life - but you would have never imagined that he is, instead, a funny, witty, passionate and overall nice person to be around. And you like to have him around - a lot. As a friend, of course. A friend that also happens to look extremely handsome every time he bursts out in a laugh that can light up a whole room-
You shake these thoughts away as you finally approach the table, slamming the papers on the wooden surface and startling the whole group with your arrival.
“Jesus, y/n” Steve exclaims, clutching his chest with one hand, “you really need to stop doing this”.
“At least this time it’s not a tray full of perilously balanced food” Robin observes, scooting to the side to let you sit down between her and Steve. “What took you so long? There’s not much food left, and I was not ready to fight some prepubescent kid to save an extra serving of spaghetti for you - And also, what is that?” She asks you as you plop down on the bench that runs along the table, pointing a finger at the files you’ve brought with you.
“This” you reply with a sigh, your eyes shooting up across the table to Eddie, Jeff and Gareth as you tap lightly on the sheets, “is something I need your help with”.
The three of them stop eating and exchange some surprised looks, eyebrows furrowed and mouths agape in confusion as their forks hang in mid-air.
“Our help? With writing?” Gareth asks, trying to get a closer look at the scribbled and scratched words on the paper, “I don’t know how we could-“
He suddenly stops with a hiss of pain, one hand darting under the table to massage his leg as he swiftly turns towards Eddie. “Dude, what the hell?”
Eddie, however, ignores him and focuses on you, his deep brown eyes casually wandering over your face as he props his head on one ringed hand. “Shoot it” he chimes with a nod, “we’ll do our best”.
You thank him with a smile. “As you all know” you explain, “the big treasure hunt is tomorrow”
“Treasure hunt?” Eddie and Steve exclaim in unison, exchanging a puzzled look as Robin rolls her eyes.
“Yeah, dinguses” she says, her eyes darting between the two. “Haven’t you checked the schedule? You’ll be both on patrolling duty”.
The two guys lift their eyebrows in confusion, but you dismiss their perplexity and bring the focus back to your papers by hitting them with the palm of your hand. “For the hunt, we need to set up and hide hints all over camp” you continue. “You know, like, little pieces of burned paper that resemble pirate parchment or something of that kind”.
“That’s Mr. Smithson’s idea” Robin chips in, addressing Steve and Eddie, “the kids love that stuff”.
Across the table, Gareth nods absentmindedly with a smirk, probably thinking about last year’s hunt and how he managed to redirect everyone to the bathrooms by misplacing all the hints and creating utter chaos.
“The thing is” you go on, rotating the papers upside down so that they face the three guys in front of you, “the hints need to rhyme. And I have to write them, which I’ve been trying to do for the past three hours, but I can’t find the right words or make them sound good for the life of me. So, I thought-“ your words falter as you realize that probably this is stupid, or it might even offend them - but you’ve gone so far now, so you have to shoot your shot. “I thought that maybe you could help me with that”.
Three pairs of eyes move up from the papers and land on you, puzzlement still permeating their look.
“You know” you hesitantly add, mentally crossing your fingers, “you’re in a band, and you write music… and lyrics… I thought you’d be way better at this than me”.
Indeed, you remembered how Eddie talked about Corroded Coffin during the hike, and how it impressed you finding out that they even write and perform a couple of original songs - that’s why, in the heat and stress of the moment, you thought about asking them for a little help. And right now you really, really hope that wasn’t presumptuous of you - as Max Mayfield, another of Dustin’s friends, would definitely say.
Once you finish speaking, Eddie is the first to smile, and you realize that most of your nervousness actually depended on his reaction. You smile back, and remember to breathe again - not noticing Robin’s narrowed gaze and slight smirk as she stares at the two of you.
“Let me see” Eddie says, grabbing the paper sheets and the pen you’re handing him as Jeff and Gareth huddle closer, the food left on their trays now forgotten. They start to read what you’ve written so far, occasionally exchanging a few words that Eddie diligently reports on the paper with messy, slightly crooked handwriting.
While they work under the intrigued stare of Robin and Steve, you stand up to go get whatever food’s left - and when you walk back to your table, you’re too distracted by Gareth and Jeff’s sudden arguing about which word rhymes better with “pinecone” to catch the mean glare Jason Carver throws towards your group.
— 🏕 —
The following day, the atmosphere pervading every inch of camp is filled with electricity - and not just the one coming from the excitement and expectation of the young campers, who are ready to dart in every direction to find the trail of clues you and a few other counselors hid around the area and in the surrounding grove before breakfast.
The buzzing on the ground is indeed matched by a similar tension in the sky, as dark heavy clouds hiding sudden flashes of light are looming beyond the line of the trees across Lovers Lake, a stark contrast to the bright blue above the cabins.
And it’s exactly the thunderstorm that seems to be approaching camp with relentless slowness the main topic of the last-minute meeting you’re holding in the staff room behind the Headquarters, where Mr. Smithson is showing you today’s weather bulletin.
“The storm shouldn’t be here until later tonight” the camp director is saying, slightly rising his tone to overcome the nervous chatter of all the counselors crammed in the room. “So, the treasure hunt will still be held, but with a few extra precautions” he adds as he nods towards one of the older girls, who starts rummaging through some drawers in the back of the room. After a few seconds of loud poking around, she ends up taking out a box of walkie-talkies.
“You will do your patrolling rounds in couples” Mr. Smithson continues, while the background talking finally lowers at the sight of the devices, curiosity taking over everyone - you and your friends included. “I’ll read you the list before you head out. Each of the couples will be equipped with a walkie-talkie - you can use it to communicate with everyone else and to facilitate an eventual regrouping of the kids in case the weather conditions worsen faster than we predict. Those who are not on patrol duty will be helping Mrs. Janet with the food. Snacks have already been made for lunch, so you will make sure that everything’s ready for dinner”.
“For once I’m glad I’m on kitchen duty” Robin states, happily drumming her fingers on the table beside you. “I’ll be free the whole morning while you guys will have to deal with crazy kids running around the woods with a storm incoming. You should really start worrying” she chimes as she turns around to look up with a slightly mocking smile at Steve, Eddie, Gareth and Jeff - who are standing on their feet behind your chairs due to the lack of seats in the full room.
“Thanks for rubbing that in, Buckley” Eddie observes with his trademark lilt, arms crossed on his chest as he flashes her an ironic upside-down smile. “Don’t get offended if I’ll never come to you for friendly advice in the future, ‘kay?”
The idea of Eddie confiding in Robin for whatever reason makes you let out a low chuckle, but Robin is quick to notice it.
“Laugh all you want, y/n” she jokingly says, nudging you lightly, “but you’ll be out there in the rain, too”.
You attempt to reply, but you’re interrupted by Mr. Smithson’s declaration of the patrolling pairings for the day. Once a couple is called, they get up and head towards the door, grabbing a walkie-talkie on the way out.
Thankfully, you’re paired with Steve this time, so you’re glad that you’ll be able to spend the day in good company.  You’ll be monitoring the kids along the banks of the lake, very close to the Headquarters (and, consequently, to eventual shelter from the rain); the same goes for Jeff and Gareth, who’ve ended up together after switching partners on Gareth’s idea. Eddie, instead, is the one who has it worse: he’s been positioned in the closer edges of the woods with none other than Tammy Thompson, who looks more scared to be with him than of the low rumblings in the sky that can be heard in the distance.
As he walks away with the girl, the almost funny contrast between his unimpressed expression and her almost terrified and pleading one making you unexpectedly sorry for him, an idea pops into your mind.
“Steve” you exclaim, suddenly turning towards him, “why don’t you and Eddie switch places?”
Steve looks at you with a bewildered expression in his eyes, and you immediately realize that blurting that out like that could lead to a number of misunderstandings.
“I mean, you’re very, uhm… close with Tammy” you explain, “and you could spend more time together this way. Also, she doesn’t look very comfortable around Eddie… I don’t think it’s the best feeling for him, as well, being judged like that”. You hope he understands that you’re asking this for Eddie, with a possible advantage for Steve himself; sure, you really wouldn’t mind spending the day with Eddie - on the contrary, a very deep part of you hidden beneath your chest is already exulting at the idea, but that’s not really the point right now.
“Yeah, I think we can do that” Steve hesitantly replies, confusion still hinting through his tone - but as you both look back towards the trees you realize that you’ve lost sight of the two other counselors.
“Too late, I guess” he adds with a small sigh, patting your shoulder with one hand as he catches the disappointment on your face. “He’ll be alright, though, don’t worry. She’s harmless, and I believe he doesn’t care that much about what she thinks” he tells you with a small smile.
“Yeah, yeah, of course” you quickly reply, not very convinced about that last part. “You’re the one who’s dating her, so I will take your word on that”.
“Actually” Steve speaks again as the two of you start walking towards the dark waters of the lake, “I don’t think we’ll date any longer. We’ve actually never properly dated, to be honest”.
You look at him in surprise. “And why would that be, heartbreaker?” You jokingly ask him, causing him to smile.
“I don’t think she’s the right one for me” Steve shrugs, “she kept going on and on about my hair and how I look even better up close and stuff like that” he continues while you listen, your smile softly matching his as he reveals a new side to you. “I mean, of course I like receiving compliments - I don’t spend an hour in the morning to get this bad boy to look this good for nothing” he adds, passing one hand through his actually perfect hair, “but I’m not just that. I’d love to talk about other things, too, you know?”
As you finally reach the edge of the water, it’s your turn to pat his shoulder. “I have to agree with you on this one, Steve” you tell him, “you’re actually a very nice guy with a lot to say, under all that Farrah Fawcett hairspray”.
Steve’s cheeks blush slightly as his eyes widen in surprise. “How do you even know I use that?”
“Someone I know might have mentioned that” you reply with a laugh.
“Dustin” Steve exclaims, clapping one hand to his forehand as he realizes. “I swear to god, next time I see him-“
“Harrington, Henderson, are you in position?” Mr. Smithson’s voice croaks through the walkie-talkie, cutting Steve’s words off.
“Yes sir” he replies, his tone still slightly annoyed from your conversation.
“Good” the director states, before making the final announcement. “Attention everyone: we’ve just given the go-ahead to the campers. The hunt starts now!”
As soon as those words are uttered, you can hear the excited cries of the younger campers as they start scattering all over - some running along the lake and passing next to you and Steve, others darting beyond the cabins and towards the woods.
The following hours go by without anything exciting or noteworthy really happening - except a little kid tripping on a misplaced stone on the shore and needing to be escorted back to the Headquarters for a little fixing up.
You and Steve spend most of the time chatting, playing silly word games and riddles and walking up and down the edge of the lake with the walkie-talkie in your hand.
The dark clouds seem to have slowed down their approach, so you forget about them for a while - until, after you’ve had your packed lunch on the pier, your eyes always fixed on the shore, a low rumble makes your gaze shoot up. Right above you, the sky has turned completely gray, with flashes of light peaking through the now thicker and messier clouds.
Steve throws a glance at his wristwatch, his brows furrowing in concern.
“It’s 2 pm” he states, answering the silent question in your eyes. “And it doesn’t look like it’s going to hold for much longer”.
“Do you think we should start calling the kids in?” You ask, clutching your own naked arms as a sudden gush of wind makes shivers run on your skin.
Steve thinks on it for a second, but just as he is about to reply his word are cut off by the sudden buzzing of the walkie-talkie, followed by Mr. Smithson’s voice.
“To all counselors, please regroup the campers and head back to the Headquarters” the director announces with a hurried tone, “seems like the storm is about to break sooner than we expected. See you in 15 minutes. Over and out”.
You and Steve almost jump to your feet as you swiftly walk back, calling and sending every kid you meet along the lake’s shores back towards the main building.  After a few minutes, when no one else is in sight, you follow them to the Headquarters’ porch, where the staff and the other counselors are doing a headcount of the campers as they walk inside the main room.
Robin’s there too, leaning against the wooden railing as she worriedly scans the sky. You and Steve walk up to her, earning a grin as you reach her.
“You’re lucky this thing was called off” she exclaims, winking at you as she nods towards the kitchen. “I managed to steal a couple of chocolate chip cookies, we can have them with the hot choc we’ve made for the kids”.
“Sounds like a plan” Steve replies, shivering at the chilly breeze that’s getting more and more intense by the minute.
“An amazing plan, I’d say” you add as your stomach growls in agreement, causing Robin to chuckle.
“Then let’s get you inside, dinguses” she jokingly says, turning around and making her way past the other counselors crowding the porch to head towards the door with Steve right behind her, running his own hands up and down his arms to warm them up.
As you throw a last glance at the trees and pines beyond the cabins, billowing and bending under the growing strength of the wind, you suddenly stop in your tracks.
“Guys, wait” you exclaim, grabbing Steve and Robin by the back of their camp t-shirts just as they’re about to set foot inside. When their gaze follows yours, they see Jeff and Gareth rushing towards the Headquarters from the woods. When they reach you, panting and sweating from the effort of avoiding the upcoming rain, Gareth leans against the wooden wall of the building while Jeff greets you between a deep breath and the other.
“Jesus, that was one hell of a run” he states with both hands on his hips as he continues to breathe, “have you guys seen Eddie? He wasn’t here when we came back from our spot, so we went looking for him” he continues, rubbing one hand on his forehead, “but he’s nowhere to be found”.
“Yeah, no shit” Gareth adds, finally catching his breath, “we even tried to contact him on the radio, but he never replied”.
An abrupt weight drops on your stomach at Jeff’s words, the thought of Eddie being out there with a storm coming worrying you more than you expected.
“No, man, we haven’t seen him” Steve replies, while you and Robin start scanning the porch to check for him. As much as you’d be relieved to see his tall figure towering over the few counselors that are still outside, Jeff’s statement still holds true: he’s not there. However, a blonde ponytail catches your gaze - and that’s when you know that something’s not right.
“Hey, Tammy” you call out, waving at Tammy Thompson once she turns around. She sees you and starts walking towards you, flashing glimpses of turquoise eyeshadow as she bats her eyes at Steve.
“Hi Y/n, Robin” she briefly greets you and Robin, whose slight blush disappears as soon as Tammy turns to look up a Steve with a wink. “Hello, handsome” she flirtatiously says, her southern accent noticeable in her voice as she curves her lips in a big smile - which turns into a less genuine one as she becomes aware of Jeff and Gareth’s presence behind you.
Steve hesitantly smiles back, but you’re quick to take him out of his embarrassment by addressing her again.
“So, Tammy” you begin, hoping to get some answers out of her. “Where’s Eddie? He was with you during patrol, right?”
Tammy looks at you with big, clueless eyes. “You mean Munson?” She asks, permed curls falling on her shoulder as she tilts her head. “Sorry, haven’t seen him”.
“What do you mean you haven’t seen him?” Robin interjects, any leftover trace of her previous crush on the girl now completely gone. “You didn’t walk back here with him when Mr. Smithson canceled the treasure hunt?”
“Oh, God no” Tammy replies, the ghost of her smile now turning into a slightly annoyed grimace. “I left him in the woods”.
“You did what?” Gareth exclaims, taking a few steps closer with raging eyes just to find himself blocked by Steve’s arm.
“You left him in the woods? Alone? Does he at least have the-” Steve calmly asks Tammy, but he cuts the question off once his gaze falls on the walkie-talkie that she is fidgeting with. “Jesus, you took the walkie-talkie with you?” He blurts out, one hand nervously rushing through his hair.
“God, Steve, calm down” Tammy exclaims, taking a step back. “He was being all creepy, trying to make some conversation and then being completely silent - also, after what Jason told us, I really didn’t want to spend more time alone with him than it was necessary, so I left as soon as I heard Mr. Smithson on here” she explains, waving the walkie-talkie in front of you. “Munson said he saw a kid walking off the trail and he wanted to go get him, so I didn’t think it was necessary to wait for him. He basically left me alone in the woods” she concludes with a snort, her words causing you all to look at each other with worry.
You don’t even want to know what she means with her reference to Jason Carver, not now at least. “Steve, we need to go look for him” you plainly state, your whole body tense and ready to sprint towards the trees. “It’s dangerous to be in the woods with a thunderstorm, and he doesn’t know the area. We need to hurry”.
Tammy raises her eyebrows at you in genuine curiosity. “Why do you even care so much about someone like him?”
Her question is met by five pairs of glaring eyes. “Because he’s our friend” you all reply in unison, startling her as she looks back and forth between all of you to focus back on Steve.
“Geez, Harrington, I thought you shared everyone’s opinion that Munson’s a freak” she blurts out at him, her head shaking in disbelief.
You might want to punch her here and now, but Steve gently places a hand on your arm and speaks.
“Listen, Tammy” he tells the girl, who’s standing between you and the porch steps, “I might have been a dick in the past, but I regret it and I’m trying to be better than that. Yes, I might have thought of Eddie Munson as a freak once, but I know better now - and you should too. He’s a person, just like me and you, except he’s probably nicer. Now, please move, we have to go”.
Flabbergasted, Tammy stares at you in complete silence as you and Steve turn back to Jeff, Gareth and Robin.
“Wait for us here, and keep your walkie on” you state, completely ignoring Tammy, “we’ll update you as soon as we can”.
“Got it” Jeff replies with a nod, his eyes following you as you move past a still astonished Tammy Thompson and head towards the cabins and the grove beyond them.
The low rumbles coming from the sky accompany you along the whole path, often paired with flashes of lightning that create long, yellow veins across the dark clouds. It’s still early afternoon, so you can clearly see the trail you’re walking on, the same one you took when you went on the hike on the second day of camp - but this time, the strong wind that’s running through the forest slows you and Steve down a bit, causing the branches and leaves to shake uncontrollably in your line of vision.
“Uhm, y/n, you know where we’re going, right?” Steve asks you, moving a particularly long branch away from you to let you pass.
You nod firmly, your eyes stuck on the path ahead. “Besides the shortcut to the bonfire spot, this is the only trail leaving from camp. He mustn’t be far - hopefully” you state, stopping every now and then to listen to your surroundings, examining the woods around you to look for any trace of Eddie’s presence.
Steve looks at you as you keep moving forward, his eyes investigating your worried expression. “Don’t you think that maybe we… we should have warned the staff? Set up a search party or something?”
“A… a search party?” You stop in the middle of the trail and turn to Steve, your eyes now filled with dread at the idea that maybe you underestimated the situation: why did you have to rush like that, away from camp without telling anyone? And why did it have to be you looking for Eddie? His friends know him better, they could probably find him faster…
As soon as Steve catches your quickened breath and quivering lips, he rushes to you, reassuringly placing both his hands on your shoulders.
“I’m sure he’s fine, y/n” he tells you, looking straight into your eyes, “I really do. But since this thing up here seems to be moving pretty fast” he adds, motioning with one hand towards the sky, “and we are quite deep into the woods, maybe we should head back and tell Mr. Smithson. Then the staff could come out here and help look for him before the storm hits-“
“Shhh” you suddenly cut him off, placing your index finger on your lips, your eyes wide as you listen to the woods around you. “Do you hear that?”
Steve looks left and right, trying to find any sound that isn’t the rustling of the leaves and bushes or the wind blowing through the trees. Then, he hears it too - a low but not too distant high pitched voice, yelling something that sounds extremely close to “shit”.
As Steve’s eyes widen, you let out a short chuckle filled with relief. “Eddie?” You start crying out, moving fast towards the sound, which is coming from the right side of the path.
“Eddie, where are you?” You and Steve both scream, getting off the trail and into the bushes.
A loud rumble covers whatever response you get, but it doesn’t take much for you to find the source of the voice. With Steve following you close, you keep walking in the same direction, until you turn up in a very small clearing among some pine trees. There, frantically pacing on the soft grass, you finally see Eddie.
“Shit, shit, shit” he’s nervously yelling, his hands tearing at his unmistakable curly hair, “it all looks the fucking same, for Christ’s sake-“
You stop in your tracks at the sight, making Steve almost bump into you at the edge of the clearing - but you don’t care, because sweet relief is filling your chest and reminding you how to breathe.
“Eddie!” You call his name one last time, making him turn around with a startle.
“Y/n?” He exclaims - and as soon as he realizes that it’s actually you, a smile finally breaks on his lips as he rushes towards you. “Thank god, I was starting to think I was fucked for good”.
You sprint to him, too, your lips matching his grin - but both of you stop just before you crash into each other.
“You’re- you’re here” he stutters, his hands wavering in the air as you let out a chuckle, “you found me”.
“Yeah” you reply, your eyes meeting his, “we did”.
“We…?” He asks, but as he utters those words he notices Steve walking up into the clearing as well.
“Oh, hello Harrington” Eddie casually says, his cheeks blushing with… embarrassment?
“‘Sup, man” Steve replies, greeting him with a wave, “you gave me and y/n here quite the scare. How did you even get lost?”
Eddie’s eyes dart between you and Steve, his expression now unreadable. “I, uh… I think I saw one of those little shi- one of those kids running around, so I thought I’d grab him and take him back” he explains, casually walking up to a tree and unexpectedly throwing a few soft punches at its trunk, making you and Steve look at him with confusion. “You know, didn’t want them to be left out here in the fucking apocalypse. But I guess no one was actually there, so… yeah”.
“Well, thank god y/n rushed to your rescue then. Not even the fucking apocalypse could stop her” Steve says as he makes air quotes with a knowing smile, earning a death glare from you.
Eddie’s gaze turns back on you. “You- it was your idea? To come get me?” he asks you, his expression softening again.
You hesitate, not knowing what and how much to let out in the open (wait, is there something to let out about it?). “Uh- yeah, I mean, I know the area so I thought we could find you fast enough” you blabber, not really knowing if your words make any sense.
Eddie seems like he’s about to reply, but anything he wanted to say is abruptly cut off by a loud crackle - signalling the first thunder finally falling closer to the woods.
“Time to get out of here, guys” Steve exclaims, urging you to follow him back to the path.
You walk fast behind Steve, Eddie marching beside you as you make your way back to camp. No one speaks, as you’re all focused on making it through the vegetation in the now darkened light before all hell breaks loose. And you almost make it.
As you reach the final stretch of the path before the woods thin out to reveal the cabins, the first few, thick droplets of rain start pattering on the ground and on you, causing dark splotches to appear on the green sleeves of your camp t-shirts.
You quicken your pace, but it’s too late now: in a matter of seconds, after a few more claps of thunder and rumbles, heavy rain is washing over you, the last trees of the grove offering you little shelter.
“Run!” Steve cries out, sprinting towards the cabins and, further ahead, the safe and dry main room of the Headquarters.
You move to do the same, not completely sure if you’re going to make it before you get soaked to your bones - but your thoughts turn into a completely different direction as the feeling of Eddie’s hand grabbing yours and pulling you into a run with him hits you like lightning.
As your legs rush ahead on their own, rain pouring around you in the most intense summer shower you’ve ever witnessed, time seems to slow down for a moment. All your senses are pulled towards the point where your palm is touching Eddie’s skin, where the hard metal of his rings occupies the space between your fingers, where - if you could focus a bit better right now - you swear you could feel his heartbeat.
The moment breaks suddenly and you realize you’ve made it to the front porch of the Headquarters. Soaked, yes, but safe and sound beside Eddie and Steve
“That was fun - shit” Eddie states with a grin, strands of curly hair plastered to his face as he looks down on you. As soon as he does that, he realizes that he’s still holding your hand, so he lets go - lightly flexing his fingers open as he takes a step away. The grin, however, doesn’t fade.
“Guys! You made it” Robin’s voice echoes from behind you, her face peering from the door with a huge smile as she throws a glance at the three of you, her eyes settling on Eddie. “Glad to know you’re okay, Munson”
Eddie nods his thank-you in her direction, while Steve starts making his way inside.
“Are you guys coming? I don’t want to catch something by staying outside a minute longer” he asks, one of his hands already on the doorframe.
“Sure” you reply, following his lead. “Eddie?” You question him once you notice that he doesn’t move.
“I need to get something from my cabin first” Eddie states, earning a surprised look from you, Robin and Steve.
“Are you sure about that?” Robin asks, clearly referring to the downpour that is still going.
“Yeah, it will take me a minute. I’m soaked already anyways” Eddie replies, a reassuring smile painted on his lips.
And he is, soaked. You’ve obviously noticed the way his wet camp t-shirt is clinging to his torso, hints of dark ink now visible under the almost transparent cotton. You glimpse some vague figure tattooed on his upper chest, but you’ve restrained your eyes from lingering on him for too long.
However, you can’t help but let out a spontaneous question, one you almost regret as soon as you utter the words.
“You’re not going to get lost on me again, are you?” You blurt out to Eddie, hoping he won’t notice your blushing cheeks.
He looks at you with a weird expression, something between amusement and softness. “I won’t, princess. I promise.”

The dining room is filled to the brim with campers and counselors, seeking some shelter from the storm that’s raging outside.
The raindrops patter hard and incessantly on the wooden walls and on the thick, old glass of the windows, thunders occasionally cracking and startling the younger kids, grouped tightly around a few reassuring counselors.
Half-empty mugs of hot chocolate are scattered on every table among cookie crumbs, board games are opened and set up and dry camp t-shirts and sweatshirts are handed around for those who got caught in the rain. You’ve got one as well, probably a size or two too big for you, but it doesn’t matter: you’re just glad to be safe inside, sipping on your hot drink at your friend’s table.
It doesn’t take much for Eddie to come back from his cabin, either. After less than five minutes since he bolted under the pouring rain, the doors of the main room open to reveal his tall figure once again. He strides towards your table, holding something under his arm.
“Theeere we go” he exclaims in his signature sing-song tone once he reaches you - and this time, it’s his turn to place a pile of papers on the table, neatly collected in a black ring binder.
“What’s that?” Robin curiously asks, throwing at Eddie an extra camp t-shirt that he can change into. As he peels off the wet one he’s been wearing so far and exchanges it with the dry one, you force yourself not to stare.
Gareth and Jeff’s eyes widen and smile, as they seem to recognize the contents of the binder. “This one” Gareth states, his dreamy stare fixed on the closed folder, “is a gate to a whole other world”.
“Are we really going to play?” Jeff asks Eddie with the biggest grin you’ve ever seen on his face. However, you, Robin and Steve still don’t know what they’re talking about.
“Given that all other activities for the day just went into a literal drain and I was already working on a new quest for Hellfire” Eddie explains, gesturing with his hands in the air as he sits down on the wooden bench, “I thought it might be cool to try out a short campaign and make this forced camp vacation a little more fun. So, fellow counselors” he announces, his eyes going from Steve to Robin and finally setting on you, “what do you say about embarking on a Dungeons and Dragons adventure?”
“Was that what you were writing a few nights ago?” Steve asks him, ignoring the proposal and earning a glare from you and Robin.
Eddie looks a bit sidetracked. “Maybe” he replies, opening up the binder and extracting three sheets of paper. “I was setting up your characters. If you want to play, that is”.
“I’d love to” you quickly say, causing Eddie to smile brightly. He hands your character sheet over to you, his fingers brushing against yours as a few tiny butterflies start fluttering their wings in your stomach. You’ve always secretly wanted to try the game, and knowing that Eddie set everything up for you to play makes this even more special.
“Me too” Robin echoes you with a shrug, reaching out towards Eddie to grab her character sheet. You’re a bit surprised, because that doesn’t really strike you as something she’d like, but you’re happy that she wants to join - happy that Eddie won’t feel disappointed or judged by your best friend.
Now everyone’s gaze is on Steve, who still hasn’t replied - but it doesn’t take long for him to nod hesitantly.
“Alright, let’s see how this works” he says, taking the last character sheet and furrowing his eyebrows as he starts reading it, “maybe I will finally know what Henderson likes so much about it”.
It takes a while to get used to it - especially because Steve and Robin are a bit hesitant in the beginning, while you realize that your knowledge of how the game works is definitely too vague. But after a careful explanation on behalf of Eddie, Gareth and Jeff and Eddie’s incredible DM and storytelling skills, you quickly find yourselves immersed into a new, fantasy world.
Your character is a half-elf bard - just as you told Eddie during the hike, and the fact that he remembered warms your heart a little bit. He also managed to pick the perfect choice for your friends: Steve, of course, is a human paladin, while Robin is a halfling rogue.
You end up playing for the rest of the day, the rain providing the perfect background noise as you explore secret caves, kill evil goblins and raid wooden boxes that reveal hidden treasures and gold. You manage to go on a little longer even after dinner, and what’s most surprising is that Steve’s the one who starts booing, followed suit by Jeff and Gareth, as soon as Mr. Smithson announces the lights out.
“Shit, I almost had that asshole” Robin grunts, referring to a hobgoblin she was about to slay with her longsword, “I just needed one more attack roll”.
“Next time try to use your weapon with two hands” Gareth suggests, “you’ll do more damage”.
“I also wonder what’s hidden behind that locked door” you excitedly say, “I don’t think I can deal with the cliffhanger”
Eddie’s eyes glitter with happiness at the sight of your enthusiasm. “Fear not, brave adventurers” he declares with a satisfied grin as he starts collecting all his papers and files back into the binder, his gaze proudly lingering on you, “the quest will continue”.

Hope you enjoyed this chapter :) Feedback is always welcome!
Also, thank you to @eddiesbirdie for suggesting the concept of Eddie getting lost in the woods :)

Early History
Meredith Fell was born in Mystic Falls in 1985 to Michael Fell, a neurosurgeon, and Elise Samaha-Fell, a banker. As a child, her grandmother, Marjorie Ann, told her stories about woman named Samantha Gilbert When she was 16, she was made aware of vampires by her parents. Her father helped hone Meredith's mental strength so she wouldn't become reliant on vervain. As a teenager, Meredith dated Brian Walters, but on her prom night, he dumped her on Wickery Bridge. She never forgave him, nor did she ever get over her distaste for the bridge.
She went to New York for college for graduation and stayed for a few years before deciding to move back to Mystic Falls shortly after her father became the Medical Director of Mystic Falls Hospital. When she came home, she came across her grandmother's journal and marveled at the possibility of vampire blood's healing properties. However, it seemed her grandmother was unwilling to say more about the party or who hosted it, so she couldn't learn more.
On September 26, 2010, Alaric was hit by a car and transported to the hospital, she saw that Alaric was on his feet after treating him despite the severity of his wounds. Alaric thanks Dr. Fell for helping him but she rebuffs him, asking him to call her Meredith. She is suspicious and verbalizes that she believes he may have a guardian angel or a pact with the Devil. Alaric says that it's a little bit of both and leaves.
On October 10th, Meredith meets Alaric again at the Wickery Bridge Restoration Fundraiser. She is very forward in revealing to him that she knows about vampires. The same night, she gets into an argument with her ex-boyfriend Brian Walters, where Alaric intervenes. Before leaving, Brian warns Alaric that Meredith is a psycho. Meredith thanks Alaric for jumping to her defense but has to leave after being paged. The next morning Meredith runs into Alaric at The Grill. Both were depressed as Alaric had just dropped Jeremy off at the airport, and Meredith had just lost a patient. The same morning, the body of Meredith's ex-boyfriend Brian Walters was found in the woods by a hiker. Oddly, he was staked in the heart, even though he wasn't a vampire.
10 days later, Damon was suspicious of her ties to the murder of her ex-boyfriend, Brian Walters. When Damon spots Alaric and Meredith having lunch at The Grill, he warns Alaric to be careful as he finds it suspicious that she signed the death certificate of her ex-boyfriend. Damon makes a follow-up visit to the hospital and accuses Meredith of being a murderer. She vervains him, and takes his blood. Later when Alaric confronts Meredith about this, she tells him she took Damon's blood to save her patients because she hates losing them. To further emphasize her point, she brings him to a severely injured Bill Forbes, who suffered from an actual animal attack, whom Meredith injects with vampire blood to fasten the healing process. That night, bringing Meredith to his home, Alaric reveals he's a vampire hunter & shows her his stakes. He explains the Gilbert Ring to Meredith. They flirt, and she asks him if he believes she's supernatural, to which he answers he can't be too careful. They encounter an awkward moment when Elena comes home to find Meredith and Alaric about to kiss. On her way home, Meredith recalled what Alaric told her about his ring and remembered the stories her grandmother told her about Samantha Gilbert. Taking a detour to her childhood home to find her parents were out, she went into the attic where they kept some of her grandmother's things. After going through a few boxes, she found a journal - one belonging to Samantha Gilbert.
The next day, Meredith meets Caroline for the first time. She assures Caroline that her father's situation is better after the accident. Being a little humorous, Meredith jokes with Caroline about Bill's temper. When fingers start to point to Meredith about the murders, Alaric starts to believe Meredith is the serial killer, but Elena defends Meredith stating that his love life can't be that complicated. After Alaric is attacked, Sheriff Forbes tells Elena that Meredith couldn't have done it because she was in the operating room all night. The next day, Meredith was confronted by her distant cousin, Tina Fell, with the news of Bill Forbes's death as a human and failure to transition. Shocked at the news, she asks her how she found out and learns he was a mentor to her boyfriend, Barry, and after learning from him that a "Dr. Fell" was his primary doctor when Bill went in, it didn't take Tina long to realize it was Meredith who injected him with it. Surprised and a bit impressed, Meredith proceeded that the vampire blood was used as a last resort, and - without breaking confidentiality - Bill had come in with injuries that warranted the use of the blood. Tina remarks that someone died and it's on her hands now before asking how she even came up with such a practice, to which Meredith brought out her grandmother's journal that detailed what happened at a New Year's Eve party in 1957. Watching her cousin read her journal, she was surprised when Tina declared that she was keeping the journal until further notice and demanded that Meredith stop using vampire blood before she made a mistake she couldn't take back.
Guilty about what she indirectly caused, she went back to Samantha's diary to try to figure out what had happened to a man she had previously seen as very much human and alive. Upon going through everything, she began formulating a hunch. But first, she called in a few favors. Over the next two days, she got the dagger that killed Brian "on loan" and everything regarding his death while compiling a file of Alaric's history to collaborate a terrifying possibility - that he was the Mystic Falls Serial Killer. And Bill's death likely occurred because she made him a target, by presenting him to Alaric (easy to find) and giving him vampire blood (a reason to be killed).
On the 23rd, after getting beaten up by Klaus to save Kol, Meredith takes Alaric to her house to check for possible injuries. Alaric wanted to leave to search for Elena, but she assured him that the Salvatores were on the job and to just stay the night. While Meredith slept, Alaric woke up and accidentally stumbled upon a picture of the crime scene of her ex-boyfriend. Next to it was the same dagger that had killed him. Meredith wakes up and sees that Alaric has found evidence in her apartment of the killings. "You weren't supposed to see that," she says before pointing a gun at him and shooting him. She called Sheriff Forbes and told her to come detain Alaric while she healed him with vampire blood. She explained that she believed Alaric was responsible for the murders, but likely doesn't know he's doing it. And as hard as it was, Liz could agree.
The next morning, Elena confronts Meredith about her accusations toward Alaric while she's walking into the hospital. Meredith defends her actions by telling Elena that Alaric was arrested four times before he was 21 and that Isobel had two restraining orders against him before they were married. Later that night, Elena and Matt break into Meredith's apartment to find evidence to incriminate Meredith instead of Alaric. Elena claims that the Fells keep their secrets buried in their closet, so they should check there. She searches Meredith's closet and finds a hidden compartment that contains a box. Elena and Matt go through the box and find Samantha Gilbert's diary and Brian's coroner's report with a different time of death than what was reported. Meredith soon arrives home and Elena and Matt hide in her closet. After they think they heard her leave, they open the door to find her standing there. Meredith reports the two and they are taken in for questioning by Sheriff Forbes.
After Alaric is released, Meredith goes to the Gilbert House to explain herself, where she assures that the Gilbert ring is causing him to kill members of the council. She believes he even self-inflicted himself so he wouldn't be complicated and throw everyone off their guard. Elena descends the staircase at that moment, after having read Samantha's diary, and agrees with Meredith that he's the killer.
A few days later, Meredith searches for any mental damage the Gilbert Ring may have had on Alaric by using an MRI, yet the results do not show brain damage. Meredith mentions that her business is not vampires, but saving people. After they have exhausted all medical solutions, they contact Bonnie. Bonnie thinks she can help Alaric by using a spell that requires some herbs and a personal artifact from before his breakdown. Elena goes to Alaric's apartment to retrieve his old wedding ring, leaving Alaric and Meredith at the Gilbert house. However, Alaric begins to act strangely (The Darkness) and attacks Meredith, causing her serious injury. Stefan and Elena arrive in time and Stefan gives Meredith his blood and she recovers.
On November 5th, Damon goes to Meredith at the Hospital and she asks how Alaric is doing with Bonnie's herbs. Damon tells her Alaric had lied about leaving town and taking Bonnie's herbs. After Esther uses Alaric to make another Original, Alaric decides not to turn. When he walks outside of the mausoleum, everyone he knows and loves including Meredith is waiting to say goodbyes. Meredith stays and watches over Alaric as he dies, and gives him sedatives to make his death painless. She tells Damon to comfort him during his last moments and she leaves heartbroken.
The next day, Jeremy takes Elena to the hospital where Meredith tells him she has a concussion and just needs some rest. When Meredith goes to her office, Alaric is waiting for her, scaring her due to his apparent survival. He is the Darkness now. He tells her he is having her medical license revoked for secretly giving her patients vampire blood. He also empties her vampire blood bank and demands she release Elena into his care. He leaves Meredith crying in her office. She immediately called Damon, who explained that Alaric was magically linked to Elena, so as long as she lives, so does Alaric. That night, she was on call in the ER when Stefan brought Elena in, unconscious. Explaining that she and Matt went over Wichkery Bridge in his truck and Elena had drowned, he sent her to the hospital for help. Unbeknownst to Alaric, Meredith had one last tube of vampire blood on her when he destroyed the rest. So she used it on Elena. When Jeremy came rushing into the ER in panic, Meredith assured him that his sister was okay. However, Damon stormed into the hospital demanding to to know where Elena was. Meredith reveals that she lied to Jeremy earlier that night about Elena's condition because he was so distraught. She secretly had given Elena some vampire blood due to a cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding of the brain). But her injuries ended up being too severe, which resulted in Elena awakening as a vampire in transition.
Within the next 24 hours, Pastor Young unexpectedly arrives at the hospital and tells Meredith that he's putting out extra security measures on the blood bank. Later on, she alongside Elizabeth Forbes, Matt Donovan, and Damon discussed a way to find Stefan and Elena. She was relieved to know the two eventually made it out, however remorseful that Elena, unlike Bill, had to finish transitioning to survive.
On the 22nd, Damon calls Meredith for help after he gets trapped with a bomb in Connor's trailer. While cutting the arrows out of Damon, she sees him rejecting a call from Elena. Meredith tells him he's a good brother, seeing that he's trapped in a bomb while Stefan is "playing vampire" with Elena, who broke his heart. Meredith tells him he does a really good job acting like it doesn't suck. She then successfully frees Damon from the bomb by cutting the arrows out of his chest.
Damon, Klaus, Jeremy, and Meredith planned to trap Connor to question him. Jeremy and Connor secretly follow Meredith, who is wearing a bandage on her neck making it look like she's been fed off into the storage room. Connor goes into the room but finds his bombs, along with Damon and Klaus. After Connor activates the bomb blowing up the storage room, Meredith was very unhappy with what happened, stating that there are sick patients who don't need a bomb so close to their rooms. Damon assures her no one got hurt, and offers her to have a drink with him. She says no and that she's not his new partner in crime, and to fix things with Elena and Stefan and not to let his pride leave him all alone.
The following days later, she chose to voluntarily surrender her medical license and stay at home. She was comforted by her mom, who stocked her fridge with Lebanese comfort food while helping her clean her apartment. Elise listened to her daughter's woes (over Alaric, the potential loss of her career, her arrogance with vampire blood, and the inconvenience of being unable to get over patients' loss which resulted in her cheating death with said blood to begin with.) Elise tells her to take it one day at a time - one problem at a time - in Arabic. That it's good she acknowledges her shortcomings now than when it's too late. Whether it was the blood or an inevitable drinking problem, Meredith was playing a risky game and got caught - ironically by the supernatural itself. She can't change or take back what happened to Bill Forbes or Elena Gilbert, so the only thing she can learn is that cheating death has a cost. While Elise is no doctor, she told her patient loss is inevitable - hence why medical practice is called "practice" for a reason. She also tells her, from what she gathered, that Alaric was a good, yet troubled man that tangled with vampires until they became his end. In the end, medical suspension is good for Meredith. She can either reflect and decide it isn't for her or try again and do the best she can within her abilities alone.
Some time afterward, Meredith managed to keep her medical license due to the dubious factors regarding complaints made by the deceased Alaric & Pastor Young. Her father pulled her to the side, however, and explained while he may have done some "schmoozing" on his part to help her situation, Meredith was advised to lay low and find a new residency outside of Mystic Falls - for her protection and her career.
Meredith was later visited by Tina, who came by to return Marjorie Ann's journal and to apologize for the way she acted. Given certain events and the mistakes she's made herself, she understandably forgives her due to acting on her boyfriend's loss. Tina had heard Meredith had managed to keep her license, a salvaged good from Pastor Young's death. Meredith mentally added Alaric's passing as well. When she asks what she would do next, Meredith admits she's taking her father's advice and begins the initial beginnings of applying for a medical license in North Carolina. After taking her mother's advice, she reflected and realized she liked being a doctor but failed to accept she couldn't save everyone and it led to making the wrong choices in a precarious time. She didn't see herself exploiting vampire blood for a long time, if ever, and decided to go back to practicing within her human capabilities. Her dad reached out to a contact in Durham and considering their medical advancements - it seems like a good place to start over.
On December 1st, she resigned from Mystic Falls Hospital and left town decided to stay with some old friends from her college days in Pennsylvania for what would be through the holidays. Learning that one of them was a locum tenen, an occupation she once considered but turned down, Meredith realizes having a contract with a hospital might help reduce her anxiety and help allow her to do what she loves without putting too much strain on herself. While there, she meets a man named Dante, who's also on a bit of a vacation before they lose touch. Her father would call her that night and tell her that Carol Lockwood was dead.
After that, she opted to extend her stay and volunteer her services, with references sent in, at the local free clinic that reminded her of her pre-med days. With patients not in life-or-death scenarios and in need of everyday care, it helped her slowly move on from her need to cheat and remember the humanity in what she does. Sometime later, she got the chance to have an interview at Duke University Hospital, which is one of the hospitals she wanted to be at. She ended up deciding to work at the hospital, but as a locum tenen for the hospital instead of a permanent attending.
After New Year's, she came back to Mystic Falls to get her affairs in order before going between Virginia and North Carolina to find lodging and getting to know the city. Her father didn't completely understand her reasoning for being a "substitute physician" over something permanent, but Meredith lucked out that they had a position open and explained it was more likely to keep her out of trouble.
On February 5th, Meredith was contacted by Stefan and Caroline concerning Jeremy's body after he was killed by Silas. Shocked to hear of his demise, she demands they tell her what happened - staggered to hear about Silas and so many new details, especially regarding a cure for vampirism. She examined his body and concluded that he died from a broken neck and extreme blood loss, leaving him in a state of rigor mortis, which causes muscles to tighten and lose flexibility. Meredith stated that if they continued to keep the body, he would start to bloat. She asks Elena to release his body into her care so they can arrange a good funeral for him, but Elena, fueled with the hope that the Gilbert Ring will revive him, attacks Meredith and angrily throws her against the wall. Elena shouts that he isn't dead magic is the only way to revive him, and that she needs Bonnie. Her outburst frightens Meredith. Stefan restrains Elena from hurting Meredith out of rage, but she calms down when Matt arrives and sees Jeremy dead.
Meredith and Stefan stayed with Jeremy's body when Matt took Elena out of the house. Meredith covered Jeremy with a sheet and turned up the air-conditioning to help preserve the body, though she knew it wouldn't help for long. She sat on the stairs and spoke with Stefan. He confessed to her that after years of watching people die, the pain of the loss never stopped. She agreed and said that she saw death every day and the denial was the worst part. It was the next day that she heard of the unthinkable - or unsurprising - of the burnt remains of the Gilbert House and if she had to guess, Jeremy's remains as well. This was enough to convince her it was time to make her departure from Mystic Falls.
Living in Durham became an exhilarating experience. She had fallen in love with the hospital and met all kinds of people. She'd found a new cafe, explored whatever events had to offer, new restaurants to try, and a lot more. But things got interesting when, sometime in March, Meredith ran into Dante at the hospital, or rather, Dr. Dante Moore of Pediatrics. Surprised to see each other since December, they made plans to catch up. Meredith and Dante became fast friends and even introduced her to his older sister, Abigail, who also worked at the hospital as a neuro-oncologist. Eventually, Meredith caught on that she was falling for him fast, and considering her disastrous love life, tried to keep it strictly as friends. But Dante was open about his feelings for her and wanted Meredith to take a chance on him. "A lot of beer and ice cream later", Meredith came to the conclusion that after living life on the edge and Alaric nearly killing her - she realized life was too short to not risk a chance on a possibility.
In May, Meredith came to visit & attend the Fell Family Gathering, catching up with most of her relatives. However, she noticed that Tina wasn't looking well. Considering she survived to see her high school graduation, she wouldn't be surprised if it all finally caught up to her. But when she sees the tiredness, the frequent bathroom breaks, and the sick expression on her face when their uncle releases smoke from the grill, Meredith's medical knowledge came into play. When Tina went to use the bathroom again, she followed her and found her vomiting. Helping her by pulling her hair back, once Tina was decent, Meredith didn't pull back any punches and asked her about her period. It took the teenager a minute to consider the possibility she was pregnant and asked Meredith to buy the tests, which she happily did despite the looks she got at the store. When she got the tests to Tina and it came back positive, she consoled her and let her know that she had options and should tell the father. When she returned to Durham, she spent the night at Dante's home. The next few days, however, Dante was acting strange and dodging Meredith. One day, he asked Meredith to come over to dinner and to dress fancy. She came over and found he decked out his home in a romantic manner and made her favorites. Just when he brought out dessert, a miniature cake, she took a bite and felt something in her mouth. Pulling it out and cleaning it, she saw it was an engagement ring and Dante proposed. Thinking out loud, she asked why and he essentially explained how he fell for her in Pennsylvania and how he felt it was more than just a chance that they found each other again. He knows it's fast and considering that they have a "package" on the way soon, he couldn't deny what he felt and wanted to make it official. In his rehearsed speech, Meredith caught onto the "package" part, and realizing what he said, he told her how he accidentally knocked over her travel bag when she spent the night after returning from Virginia and a pregnancy test fell out. Turns out, Meredith had an extra pregnancy test she forgot to give Tina and Dante assumed she was either pregnant or suspected she was. The situation was so hysterical that she just had to laugh and promptly explained what happened when she visited her family. Seeing the sheepish look on his face, she asked if he was only proposing to her because he thought she was pregnant. He admitted he saw her as his future wife from the moment they met and a baby, albeit early, was just the icing on the cake. Surprisingly, Meredith said yes to his proposal but told him kids could wait a little longer.
At some point, they are invited for a brief stay in Anchorage, Alaska with some friends from work. To Meredith's surprise, she enjoyed it so much. The temperature wasn't a deal breaker since she survived winters in New York. It was the friendliness, culture, and community that stuck with her. And she justified that doctors were always needed in Alaska. However, she wondered if she was thinking without regard for Dante and herself. But surprisingly, Dante was on board. However, both sides of their families had a hard time accepting this idea.
After securing jobs in Anchorage, they made the move to Alaska. Then, after getting a permanent attending in a hospital, Meredith found out she was pregnant in September. Meredith and Dante got married in December, with a small ceremony including friends and immediate family. Her father tried to convince her to come back to Mystic Falls to have her baby, but she declined. On June 16th, 2012, they had a baby girl named June Alicia after the month she would be born and late paternal grandmother. They kept in touch with video calls and visits over the years.
In 2025, sometime after June's 13th birthday, Elise called Meredith and told her that her father had a heart attack. She hurried onto the first plane she could get and made it to Mystic Falls as fast. Seeing her father look so sick, she stayed by his side until he woke up. Surprised to see her, her dad asked where the rest of her family was, to which she answered that it was just her. The doctors believed his heart was wearing out on him and while he's normally taken good care of himself, it's not good. Meredith asks if there is anything she can do to which he has a surprising request: Move back home. The entire near-death experience made her father realize that he wants his family around him if he does die. Meredith called Dante had told him what was happening. It didn't sound fair to ask them to pick up the lives they made in Anchorage for the last 13 years and wanted to consider if it would be okay if she just stayed behind. But Dante wasn't having it, saying they were a team. Granted, telling June wasn't exactly going to be great, both of them had family that wasn't exactly thrilled with them going to Alaska in the first place, and coming back to the Lower 48 might not be too much of a bad idea. Surprised by how supportive he was, she'd sworn she'd make it up to him...and June if she took the news badly.
Meredith and her family had a bit of a chaotic move to Mystic Falls, not just due to sending in their notice and making their home a rental house in case they visited, but also warming June up to the idea. She loved her grandfather, but she would be starting school in a whole new environment and it was hard. Meredith was given a job as Head of Internal Medicine while Dante found an opening for an attending pediatrician. She also reunited with Tina, having heard of her becoming a successful reporter & reopening the council while being the "bane" of Alaric and Caroline's existence since their boarding school was opened. She mostly chose not to hear anything of the town's other "dynamics", but occasionally she slipped tidbits into various conversations over the years. From Alaric's and Jeremy's revival to the town citizens' being possessed by witches and then being supernatural-free for a few months, and last but not least, Stefan and Damon becoming human and the former dying. Everything else just showed Meredith she was right for leaving when she did, and as far as her opinion of the Salvatore Boarding School went - "Anything that can go wrong, will or already had gone wrong". It also meant she'd eventually have to tell June about vampires when the time came.
Meredith eventually reunited with Alaric and met his daughters, Lizzie and Josie. She was shocked, appalled, and amazed by what he'd gone through after he'd come back - from the loss of his wife to the amazing circumstances of the twins' birth (while not an OBGYN, her mind started trying to understand the science behind Caroline's pregnancy and how the girls' type of magic made the pregnancy sustainable). But overall, Meredith made the mental comparison that the Alaric she knew and the Alaric that came back were two different people. And so was she, and perhaps it was for the best they never worked out.
One night in 2026, Meredith was leaving the hospital for the night when a car pulled up and two teenage girls called out for help when they pulled an unconscious, young girl from the backseat. Meredith hurried to help and asked what happened. Shining a flashlight in her eyes, Meredith saw her pupils dilated but instantly smelled the stench of alcohol on her breath - immediately letting her know she was drinking and this was likely alcohol poisoning. Medics came and immediately put her on a gurney before rolling her into the hospital, Meredith following with the two girls behind her. She managed to get their names, Dana Lilien and Sasha Stoteraux, and asked for the girl's name & age as well, whose name was Harmony Kenner, age 15. Seeing their hesitance, she asks them what happened, to which they reluctantly relayed how they were at a party in the woods and it was only as they were driving back that they noticed something was wrong with their friend and pulled over to feel her pulse was weak. After managing to get the names and phone numbers of their parents, she sent Dante a quick text that she was running late and decided to stick around until their parents came. They arrived, but the one who surprised her was Bonnie Bennett, who rushed in asking for Harmony. Meredith took her aside and led her to Harmony's room and had to ask what her connection was to her. Bonnie revealed she's been the girl's legal guardian since February and that she was 14, not 15. Meredith told her what she knew of her condition, which mostly resulted in getting her stomach pumped. Distraught, Bonnie says she should have seen this coming, but Meredith assures her that she'll be okay and will be in the hospital for a few days. But Bonnie says she needs two days at best. When Meredith asks why, Bonnie looks around and asks if they could talk in private. Meredith finds an empty room and Bonnie gets to the point: Harmony had vampire blood in her. Eyes widened, Meredith asks if the other girls gave it to her, which she denies because the vampire blood in Harmony is pure - natural. And with that, Meredith's jaw drops as Bonnie reveals Harmony is Klaus Mikaelson's biological daughter.
Personality
Though Meredith is a kind, honest, protective, and loyal friend, she is surrounded by an aura of mystery and secrets, which caused some suspicion when unexplained deaths began occurring in Mystic Falls. Her ex-boyfriend Brian Walters described Meredith as a psychopath and a dangerous woman. So far, this has proved untrue. Meredith has a very calm demeanor, is not easily shaken, and very keen on her surroundings. She is also supportive and tries to protect the innocent.
However, after the blow from Alaric's loss and nearly having her license revoked, Meredith sought to rehabilitate from her use of vampire blood and relearn how to accept the ability to help people with her capabilities. This also played a part in her having a new adventurous outlook on life - which led to her whirlwind marriage to her husband, Dante, and moving to Alaska.
Years later, upon returning to Mystic Falls as a wife and mother, she is still very much the same person as she was as she left. However, it becomes increasingly clear to her that so much has changed, danger still lurks in Mystic Falls and it has made her much more protective of her family's wellbeing and those of the town more than ever.
Physical Appearance
Meredith is a beautiful, slim, and fairly tall woman. She stands at 5' 7, has brown eyes, and slightly wavy dark brown hair. She dresses casually, but at the same time, professionally, due to her occupation as a doctor. Meredith is a natural beauty who does not wear much makeup. She briefly cut her hair slightly shorter and made the color a lighter shade of brown before leaving Mystic Falls. However, upon her arrival back into town, Meredith's hair has grown lightly past her shoulders and has lightened her hair.

New Mutants Abridged: 1985
The New Mutants, the YA branch of the X-Men, are the next generation: they have to learn to control their powers and to integrate into a world that hates and fears them. As their first official spin-off, the much more coherent New Mutants are a part of the X-Men’s long, tangled history. Want to unravel this tapestry? Then read the Abridged X-Men!
(New Mutants 22 - 34) - by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, Steve Leialoha
Tumblr media
My favorite subplot of this year is Sam rebelling in the softest way possible by dating a rocker chick and adopting some of her wardrobe. Of course Xavier can't even abide this, the meekest of teenage resistance, because he’s the squarest of squares. (New Mutants 24)
Whereas the Uncanny X-Men in 1985 are a bit of a disorganized mess, the New Mutants are a lot more focused. We’ve got three main arcs, and the last one barely gets derailed by the intrusion of Secret Wars II! Sure, the first arc is largely disregardable, but the second arc introduces an iconic character and the third arc, while a bit sloppy, introduces an iconic villain. So let’s goOoOo!
The Cast
Psyche - Danielle Moonstar. One of the leaders, can telepathically conjure up your greatest fear or desire. Her powers are developing: she’s slowly becoming a full-on mono-target illusionist.
Cannonball - Sam Guthrie. Other leader. Jetass with big ears. Nothin’ can hurt him while he’s blastin’.
Wolfsbane - Rahne Sinclair. Scottish werewolf. Has terrible self hatred, which isn’t odd considering the fact that she was raised by reverend Craig who put the fear of God in her. Convinced she’s going to hell because of aforementioned werewolfishness.
Sunspot - Roberto daCosta. Brazilian hothead.
Magik - Illyana Rasputin. Teleporter, demonic sorceress and resident bad girl. Is slowly being enveloped by a mysterious armour while using her powers. Willing to take all the risks.
Magma - Amara Aquilla. Lavamancer. Exchange student from a hidden roman village in the Amazon, still somehow very boring.
Cypher - Douglas Ramsey. Starts out thinking this is all some great adventurous caper, but soon realizes that his inoffensive powers (he’s an omniglot) mean that he’s forever out of his depth.
Warlock. Techno-organic alien. Goofball.
Professor Charles Xavier - Telepathic headmaster, still violating boundaries all over the place. Has adopted a more ‘hands off’ teaching philosophy later, considering some events in the sister book.
Cloakspot and Daggersbane
I know I’m not the best at keeping things short and sweet, which is partly because I tend to ramble on and partly because I’m dealing with a writer who likes to take the Neverending Story-approach to his plots and riddle them with more hooks than can ever be picked up on. (Claremont, I love you, but you’re not exactly all about the tight narrative.) In the interest of succinctness, however, we can mostly ignore the first arc of 1985, which involves Sunspot and Wolfsbane being possessed by the powers of Cloak and Dagger. It doesn’t really figure into the grand scheme of things, it’s more about Cloak and Dagger – who have never really figured into the X-mythos and are (not coincidentally!) one of the few mutants I don’t know much about – and by the end of the plot the status quo is restored: Tandy and Tyrone get their powers back, Roberto and Rahne are happy and healthy! Yay!
Legion
And then, we check back in on Muir Isle (the Research Centre for Potential Future Plot Hooks), where a mysterious patient with truly the raddest of hair is throwing a ‘poltergeist tantrum’. It renders two of Moira MacTaggart’s aides catatonic. Oops! Since this obviously a psychic emergency (and not the kind where I can’t get up from the bathroom floor because everything is horrible), Moira calls Xavier, who comes a-flyin’ in the Blackbird, together with half of the New Mutants. (Moonstar, Wolfsbane, Cypher and Warlock.)
Tumblr media
Whatever, Dani. It’s not like you have stellar taste in lovers, I’ve seen you flirt with Sunspot. (New Mutants 26)
Waiting on Muir Isle is Gabrielle Haller, Israeli ambassador, previous paramour of Xavier and mother of David, the trouble-causing patient. Meanwhile, somewhere on the more populated part of the island (I guess? I never know if Muir Isle is just a barren rock or if there’s a tiny little Muir Town), Rahne runs into the man who raised her, the hateful reverend Craig. He calls her satanspawn because of her werewolfishness. Rahne runs to Moira’s lab for solace and for once, Moira is actually a comforting presence and not the pragmatic worst. She even tells Rahne she considers her her daughter. (Don’t ask what happened to Moira’s son Kevin, Rahne!) Anyway, such sincere emotions must be immediately punished.
Gabrielle, meanwhile, comes clean to Xavier. She mentions how she has not regretted their affair (despite Xavier being her therapist and therefore doing a hecking breach of trust), but she has not contacted him either, because of as of yet undisclosed reasons. And then, just as Gabby starts telling about “the trauma that made David autistic” (spoiler alert: not how autism works, narrative), a massive explosion interrupts them! In the wake of the explosion, Moira and Rahne are physically unharmed, but their minds are completely blank. Uh oh!
Tumblr media
My google search has yielded a disappointing lack of people cosplaying as Legion with his iconic hair. C´mon nerds! Hop to it! (New Mutants 26)
Xavier, who is still recovering from the brutal beating he suffered, has to use Rahne and Dani’s telepathic connection to enter David’s fortified mind. (It’s funny how much X-Men and New Mutants are an extension of one another, only reading this one is like watching Angel without having watched Buffy.) Anyway, Xavier inexplicably deduces that David had three fractured personalities, each with their own powers: a telepath, a telekinetic and a ‘pyrotic’ (we’d call that a pyrokinetic nowadays). Xavier starts breaking through the very real metaphorical wall, but when David reveals the one secret that Gabrielle could not spit out (“Luke, I am your father son.”), Xavier’s concentration is broken. Oops! Promptly, the newly minted daddy!Professor, Gabrielle and all the New Mutants are sucked into the abyss of David’s mind.
Legion is one of my favorite characters, but the portrayal of his autism and his what we now probably would call Dissociative Identity Disorder is… less than ideal, especially in this era. I  enjoy him later a lot more, when he becomes a fully realized character with autism rather than a plot point with a disability who sometimes triggers various dystopian alternative universes. One aspect I do love about him has fortunately been a part of the character since his inception: he is a perfect foil to Xavier. Not only because his powers are strong enough to prevent Charles from doing an easy!and!invasive!fix on them, but also because he serves a good reminder of Xavier’s foibles, on how his ideals sometimes fail him. Charles can’t control David, not through his powers and not through his rhetoric. David can always be counted on to be the reality check Charles sometimes sorely needs.
(David is also fascinating as a literary device, because the way he is treated as a character is also a sign of how much our understanding of autism and neurodiversity has changed over the last three decades. I found a great essay by Willow Callahan on the Fandomentals that unpacks that here.)
Tumblr media
God damn, I wish this were my mind on drugs. (New Mutants 27)
This arc is Bill Sienkiewicz’ swang song for the New Mutants, but damn does he deliver some gorgeous work rendering the bizarchitecture of David’s mind.
The group is scattered throughout this mindscape and separately, they meet three different people:
Jack Wayne, a smarmy telekinetic. He is quick to paint ‘the arab’ as the cause of the warzone in David’s mind: apparently, the violence only started when he arrived. He tries to convince Xavier to kill him, if he can.
Jemail, the telepath, also referred to as ‘the arab’. Gabrielle recognizes him as the terrorist who killed her significant other. In the real world, an even younger David protected his mother from him and his AK-47 and killed him in self defense. How the hell he ended up in David’s mind, she has no idea.
Cyndi, the pyrokinetic, a wild card who likes the current status quo. Still, she helps Rahne and Moira rendezvous with Dani and Doug. (Doug annoyingly keeps at his running thread of feeling useless because he has no useful powers, but Dani points out that none of them have powers in David’s mind, SO FUCKING SNAP OUT OF IT. (The last bit might have been me. I’m still right though.))
They all meet up (sans Jemail) and Jack convinces them to journey to the center of David’s mind, where they find the boy’s memories preserved as crystals. Some are broken, some are mended. Here, they get to the core of David’s trauma, which is implied to have caused his autism (eesh): while killing the terrorists that tried to murder his mother, he felt them die in his mind. They say it fractured his psyche, although I’d say that experiencing death three times might have also caused trauma if David had been neurotypical. Then again, IAMNAP.
It also turns out that Jack has been breaking David’s memory crystals and is intent on killing the other rogue personalities so he can own David and David’s body. Jemail, who is a reflection of one of the killed man’s psyches, learned empathy and insight through David’s telepathic powers and has been trying to fix David’s shattered psyche. Jack tries to cut Jemail to ribbons with one of the shards, but Dani frightens him off with a vision that is so bizarre and outlandish (it’s of Xavier being a good dad) that Jack flinches back. She then forces Jack and Jemail to help her bring order to David’s mind and return everyone who isn’t part of David back to their bodies.
Xavier, apparently exhausted from all the useless he was this arc, wakes up two weeks later. David is making progress, even though Jack, Cyndi and Jemail all still inhabit his mind. Xavier promises to help David and never leave him ever again. (It’s amazing this huge lie didn’t fracture David’s psyche a fourth time, but whatev. It will be at least half a decade before we see Legion again. XD )
Side-plot: Magleeto
After Warlock accidentally caused Asteroid M to crash into the Earth, an injured Magneto has charted Lee Forrester to bring him to his old C’thulu island, where the X-Men randomly decided to start living until they randomly didn’t. I love that nobody cares enough about this mysterious islet to actually figure the fuck out where all this alien architecture came from. Magneto’s like: “Yeah, this is my fuck island now.” Tale as old as time: the would be mutant supremacist softens when stuck on an island with one (1) decent human being.
Tumblr media
After this, they fuck. A lot. (New Mutants 25)
Side plot: Hellfire Happenings
Meanwhile, the Hellfire Club admits Selene and Emmanuel daCosta into their Inner Circle. Selene is a terrifying mutant who recently terrorized an Ancient Roman city hidden in the Amazon and who is currently looking to get a foothold in the modern world, and Emmanuel is Roberto’s papi. After his son rebuked him, he decided to really embrace that villainous side. Sebastian Shaw (always a delight) isn’t too bothered by the crooked Brazilian business man but does worry that the evil, blood thirsty priestess wants to take his spot as the leader of the Hellfire Club. Smart cookie, that Shaw.
Empath, one of the Hellions, continues being the worst. No worries, we love him for it.
Gladiat-ooh-la-la
While Xavier hears he’s a daddy, we check in with the remainders back at the mansion. Shirtless(!) Sam is chasing a plane! Apparently, somebody kidnapped Sunspot and Magma, and Cannonball, despite a myriad of ‘aw shucks’ lets them get away. It’s all very in media res.
Fortunately, Magik is able to interrogate one of the assaillants, revealing they were kidnapped by a secret gladiator ring somebody runs in Hollywood. (The wtf-quotient on this plot is pretty high, ngl.) Illyana bamfs them to the West Coast, but also shifts them one week into the future. Oops! Out of options, they go to Laila (Sam’s girlfriend! She’s in a band! And an intergalactic teleporter and thief!) And… WAIT IS THAT GUIDO?!
Tumblr media
WHY have Illyana and Guido never been on the same team? More of this snark, plz. (New Mutants 29)
It might be because the art has taken a bit of a nosedive, but holy fuck, Illyana is right on the money when she calls Guido an ‘ugly lump’. Also, Sam? Running around with teleporters means you always have time to grab yourself a shirt.
Wait, why am I complaining? ANYWAY.
On a whim, Laila teleports them all to her own private Dyson Sphere. (Seriously, Sam, what are you doing with this girl? If you want someone capricious who looks good in black, you’ve got your pal Sunspot right there!) Laila also brought her background singer, Alison Blaire, a.k.a. The Dazzler! And Dazzler knows all about the gladiators! How fortunate!
Man, this plot is really held together by spit and some glue, isn’t it? Anyway, Dazzler used to be one of those gladiators and might still be longing for that life. Ever since got outed as a mutant, her life has been in shambles. (She is reduced to being a background singer, you guys. And she doesn’t even have her own comic book anymore!) But as a gladiator, she could live for the applause! Life was easy! There were no worries! (Except being killed in the arena, but that's minor.)
Together with Dazzler and Lilah, Sam and Illyana infiltrate the gladiator ring. Sunspot and Magma appear, all bloodthirsty and ready to kill! Wait, what happened to them? And who knew Roberto looked so fine in his gladiator armour?
Tumblr media
Not looking disrespectfully or nothing, but that is one hell of a codpiece. (New Mutants 29)
Apparently, some shadowy figure forced Roberto and Amara to fight, because if they wouldn’t? Some other homeless runaways would have to fight in their stead. Their heroic hands bound, the two hapless mutants descend on their invading teammates and a confusing kerfuffle breaks out. (Some of this confusion is because of the art.)
But then! We interrupt this plot for some crossover shenanigans! Xavier alerted Magneto on Fuck Island: the Beyonder is coming! (Again!) There’s some Secret Wars II-related teleporting and Magneto recruits everyone for a fight against the Beyonder, and ugh. Whatever. Amara and Roberto share my lack of interest in this ill-advised crossover, but everyone else tags along.
So. While we wait? Who is this gladiator ring where mutant is pitted against mutant for? Are there, like, a bunch of jaded, bored and most of all rich Hollywood socialites who just… do this? This is their idea of a good time? Claremont, you love your textboxes and excessive prose, you couldn’t spare a few words to try and explain this? No? Fine.
The Secret Wars intermezzo is thankfully short, the Beyonder briefly brings out the Darkchylde for some reason I can’t be bothered to read up on. It also serves to reunite the whole team and together with Dazzler, Rachel and Shadowcat, they set out to free the gladiators, including Sunspot and Magma. So back to the main plot!
This story is mostly about Dazzler, who hasn’t earned anyone’s trust yet. (“You’re an artist, not a hero.”) Alison is determined to prove herself and not succumb to the temptation of performing for a hungry audience, but slowly, she feels herself slipping into old gladiatorial habits… Rachel, meanwhile picks up on a strange and sinister psychic presence; that same telepathic presence snatches Kitty, forces her in a robot that looks straight out of Earthbound and forces Sunspot and Magma to fight her.
Tumblr media
A+ funky robot design and A+ for giving a literal new meaning for ‘chewing the scenery’. (New Mutants 30)
While all of this is happening, an as-of-yet unseen (but large-shaped) villain is gleefully watching and pulling all the strings, riling up everyone involved by telepathically possessing them or suggesting them into action. Who could this be? Whoever they are, they are hilariously over the top and perhaps my favorite part of this jumbled narrative.
Roberto quickly figures out that the robot contains Kitty when it uses her phasing power and he helps her shake the telepathic thrall. Kitty stumbles out of the robot and it collapses, while the crowd bays for blood. (Amara is all: "Back home the crowd was never this blood thirsty", which I would doubt. I watched Rome.)
Dazzler, still possessed (uh, probably) strikes at Kitty while the cavalry arrives. Magik, fed up with this storyline, teleports Dazzler in and out of Limbo, breaking the telepath’s hold on her. The police arrive and both the audience and the gladiators flee. If you think these spectators get off scot-free… Well, apparently, they were punished by Dazzler’s singing performance, which was so earth-shattering that they’ll never forget it and nothing else will ever compare.
Mkay. I'm just saying, I saw Adele live and I can still enjoy other people's music.
Anyway, the New Mutants pursue the Ringmaster under the shadow of fatphobism (they keep calling their enemy fatso, glut, boat or blimp, and this fatphobia will be a sad but running theme this whole arc; I’ll be delving into all that in a later episode) and then, suddenly, all is revealed! Their enemy is…
Tumblr media
It’s not necessarily bad to portray one fat person as a monster, but when the only fat people in the narrative are evil!Karma or the Blob? Not a great look. (New Mutants 31)
Karma is a bitch
Karma threatens to let her enthralled slaves cut their own throats if the New Mutants don’t let her leave, so they kind of have to let her go for now. They decide to chase her without involving the X-Men (“We take care of our own”) so they ditch Kitty, Rachel and Dazzler and go on a whirlwind chase through time and space! (Mostly involuntary.)
See, the New Mutants infiltrate Karma’s secret compound in Madripoor, because apparently all their time with Xavier has taught them that it’s easy to sneak up on a telepath. Sure, they leave Cypher and Warlock behind as, er, ‘back-up’ (mkay, Dani), but ironically, a Boy and his Bot are attacked first. (Karma knows all.)
Karma first gloats that the professor protected well from psi-attacks, but she is a telepathic master equal to him! (This is perhaps the point where we, as readers, should figure that this isn’t entirely Karma.) She possesses all the New Mutants, except for Moonstar and Magik, who bamfs them off to Limbo. Dagnabbit! When they return, Karma’s New Mutants seem to have slaughtered Karma’s army. Whoops!
Dani picks up a lead to Egypt and bids Magik to drop them off there. Magik bams them to Egypt BC, deep in pharaoh time. They have a meet and greet with an ancestor of Storm, who sends them back, overshooting them with a mere five years! In this not-so-distant future, they meet the Bad Mutants, who are bloodthirsty monsters. Seriously, the Rowdy Ruff version of our beloved mutants is the only thing that makes all this completely unnecessary time jumping worthwhile.
Tumblr media
Poor Sunspot, getting grey hair at the ripe old age of nineteen. (New Mutants 32)
Poor New Mutants. Even when they’re evil, they look like dorks. Anyway, Illyana finally warps them back to current Cairo! Here, Warlock, immune to telepathic powers, fled to Storm for help. Storm has figured out who is pulling Karma’s strings (hope she shared this with the group), but despite this, her plan of attack is the same as Dani’s previous one: a full frontal assault.
It goes badly, with Storm also ending up possessed. Sigh.
Magik and Moonstar try to flee in Warlock-as-a-plane, but when they end up cornered again, Illyana realizes they have to stop doing this. She delivers Danielle on Karma’s doorstep, seemingly betraying her friends! She then bamfs her and Warlock back to Limbo, where an incandescent Warlock attacks her, before she can reassure him. She has a wicked little plan…
But first, Magik first bamfs back to Xavier’s encounter with Amahl Farouk way back when. Let’s not dwell on how the fuck she even figured to what time to teleport to, because the narrative sure doesn’t! And, just like Storm, she figures out what’s wrong with Karma: she is possessed. By the Shadow King!
dun dun dun
Magik comes to Karma for an alliance and the Shadow Karma wastes no time tormenting her while he succumbs to the villain speech. He explains:
How his licentious night club in Cairo (and his gladiator ring in Hollywwood) are places where regular people come to be entertained by the temptation of the lurid dark for a little while, but in fact, s/he is corrupting them from within.
How he lived on the astral plane after Xavier defeated him. From there, he possessed Karma. And after he makes Ororo kill Xavier, no one will be able to stop him…
Magik thinks otherwise. Suddenly, all the New Mutants disappear, because Magik? Was actually  Warlock (robots in disguise). And the real Magik? Was bamfing her teammates to Limbo to break the Shadow King’s hold. Magik ports them back in and they smack him around until the Shadow King evacuates ~the dancefloor~ Karma’s body. They quickly figure out he took Douglas, but Karma confronts and fights Amahl on the astral plane and he finally leaves leaves to lick his wounds.
Yay! Longest arc ever over!
This could have used an editor.
Didn’t you take Art History? Sienkiewicz is the right kind of scratchy and weird, Leialoha… less so.
Turns evil: Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball and Magma. It’s the ‘we’re in the future and we’re evil’-variant. Funnily enough, the same happened to Sunspot and Magma last year. Best unintentional period piece: the Bad New Mutants are punk. Sam has a safety pin his ear.

Note
give to me the dr. benson hcs
Okay, so they're from my Ben x Perry verse, but I think they'd work just as well in canon or for JDox.
So according to the Scrubs Wiki, Kelso became Chief of Medicine at Sacred Heart in 1985. While Amanda (@adventurouswallflower, with whom I created this whole verse) and I worked pretty hard to make everything we came up with line up with canon years-wise, this is one of those things that doesn't quite work. Because we have Ben and Perry moving back to California and Perry starting at Sacred Heart as an intern in 1985. And bc of our Dr. Benson HCs, it's important that he's still Sacred Heart for a few years after Perry starts. I'd say probably four years? This would have Benson retiring and Kelso taking the position in '89 or '90, which works out a lot better and still has Kelso being Chief for over 10 years before JD starts.
Anyway, when Perry's an intern, he's very much got that chip on his shoulder that we see in the show, with the added difficulty of having nearly lost Ben to leukemia a year and a half prior. Perry's intern year is a rough one from a personal perspective: It takes him a long time to find a work-life balance, meaning that his home life really suffers while he throws himself into work non-stop. This leads to a frustrated and upset Ben and an extremely stressed Perry who is determined to do everything and be the best at all of it. Perry needs someone to take him under their wing in a way that Perry will allow, because we all know he's the biggest control freak on the planet and would resist help and alienate himself from his colleagues. Plus he's kind of an asshole (spoiler alert, I know).
Dr. Benson is that person for Perry. He sees the potential in Perry, the drive, the ambition. But he also sees his godawful interpersonal skills, mostly with his colleagues and authority figures, but also to a degree with his patients as well. He can already tell that if this kid can pull his head out of his ass, he'll do great things -- both as a doctor and just as a person. (Sounding like any other mentor/mentee relationships we might know?) Anyway, Perry is, of course, resistant to the idea at first, until he has a huge fight with Ben.
Ben's understandably upset about how much time Perry's spending at work (and Ben works too, so they're barely seeing each other) and instead of acknowledging that Ben is right, Perry just digs his heels in and says something he shouldn't have. Ben packs a bag and goes to Jordan's for at least the night. I think part of Perry would expect Ben to be there in the morning (though Perry barely sleeps), ready to talk things through. But he's not. And Jordan either won't answer his calls or hangs up on him. And Perry still just. Goes to work. It's not til he's been on-shift for a few hours that he starts really thinking everything through and realizes how much he's fucking up and that nothing, nothing is worth losing Ben over. He asks Kevin Casey (who canonically knew Perry at least during residency, and I made an executive decision that that meant their intern year lmao) to cover his shift, and even tells him he has no right to ask him for anything given how much of an ass he's been, but Kevin does it.
I'm also remembering as I'm writing all this that this was supposed to be about Dr. Benson and I swear it is, but I forget that no one else knows the ins and outs of this verse and what happens 😂 So I'll fast forward through Perry going to Jordan's to talk to Ben and how he admits how fucking terrified he is to be a doctor (*cough JD cough*) and how he doesn't know if he can do this and if succeeding means losing Ben, he doesn't want it anymore. They do make up (there's a lot more to if, of course), but this is a HUGE wake up call for Perry, and afterwards he's a lot more receptive to Dr. Benson's attempts to guide him/help him out. Still pissed about it, sure, but he's smart enough to recognize that he should take help where he can get it, especially from the Chief of Medicine.
As part of these HCs, Kelso would have been an attending during this time and I think he can't stand Perry because of his attitude. So when Benson eventually makes him Chief Resident ("what am I supposed to do with 10,000 John Dorian: Chief Resident business cards?!"), that makes Kelso hate him that much more. It's not long after that that Benson retires, which is difficult for Perry, not bc he's scared of Kelso, but bc over the last 4ish years, Benson has become like a father figure to Perry. The only person Perry's ever had in his life that came close to that was his grandfather (mom's dad), and he died when Perry was 6 or 7. Benson even calls him "son" and yeah, it's more in the way that Kelso says "sport," but he absolutely cares for Perry and there's definitely that father figure dynamic. They stay in touch after he retires, though not as much as Perry would like. There's the annual Christmas card and the random letter here and there, but Benson's out traveling with his trophy wife 😅
But eventually, Perry lets him in (while they still work together) and tells him about Ben, about what they went through with the leukemia. And Dr. Benson is completely supportive while also respecting how private Perry is about his personal life. But in hindsight, it makes sense when Perry struggled with an admit with leukemia or late-stage cancer and why he sometimes got paged to the ER and would be down there for ages (Ben is a klutz who works in construction, like. for real.) and come back looking frazzled.
By the time we see Benson in s1, Ben and Perry have both kiddos (a girl that Jordan was their surrogate for and a young boy they adopted [cue me screaming]), so when Benson shows Perry his wife(s), Perry shows him pictures of the kiddos and it's really sweet. He still tells Perry the same things he does in the episode, and not because he's trying to be a dick, but because he still sees that very same drive in Perry and knows he could be great. But he also knows that he's made himself Kelso's number one enemy and: "If you would play the game even a little you'd be in a position where you could change things around here. But you're too stubborn for that aren't ya?" Like it sounds harsh, but that's the only way to get through to Perry. That, and who else is he going to listen to if not his old mentor?
This gives way to the whole self-sabotaging storyline, which in canon is Perry trying to prove to Jordan he's changed, but in this verse, it's Ben being disappointed (worst feeling in the world, table for one) and frustrated that Perry keeps getting in his own way. "You have a family now. It's not just the two of us anymore. One of these times when you go behind Kelso's back, you're going to come home and it won't just be a suspension. Is jeopardizing your entire career and our family worth sticking it to the man?" It's a big pain point for both of them and goes from there, with Perry eventually taking little steps to do the right thing, while still fucking up sometimes bc he's him.
Anyway, Perry still keeps in touch with Dr. Benson, writing letters and sending photographs every so often, for however many years until he passes away. And it's harder for Perry than he thought it'd be -- "It's not like he was actually my dad or anything..." -- but he goes to the funeral and Ben is there with him, because anyone who was able to help Perry take the right steps is a friend to him.
I'm pretty sure I said anyway about 14 times writing all this and a lot of it was just kind of setting the scene, but idk. Dave Benson was the exact kind of mentor Perry needed and when dealing with JD, Perry definitely thinks of some of the conversations he had with Dr. Benson and draws from that. HE'S IMPORTANT, OKAY

LAUNCH: Final project - Week 2
[Sci-Fi Horror Genre Research]
For this project, I wanted to mainly look into sci-fi horror as the main theme for my concept. Sci-fi horror is a subgenre of science fiction and horror film, usually revolving around mad scientists, aliens, alien invasions, experiments or the human condition itself. This genre is used within a lot of games, movies and media making it popular among horror fans, but what exactly makes sci-fi horror so scary?
Horror and sci-fi go hand in hand when it comes to unsettling the audience that it is being presented to, as they both deal with curiosities, and 'the unknown'. Sci-fi horror movies tend to explore the dark side of science, dating back to when this was represented in silent movies such as Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, introducing the trope of mad scientists. More of these motifs include unsettling imagery, out of people's control, fear of the unknown and a dark reflection of human development. These can be really frightful to people as it is something not commonly seen or even possible to occur.

RE-ANIMATOR (1985)
The 1985 American comedy horror movie "Re-Animator" is a loose adaptation of the 1922 H. P. Lovecraft story "Herbert West–Reanimator". The story follows Herbert West, a medical student who has a special interest in re-animating the dead using a special serum he had concocted. Herbert then meets classmate Dan Cain who finds out about Herbert's secret shortly after moving in together. The story written by H. P. Lovecraft can arguably be called the first tale to include corpses being presented as 'zombies'.

How to Earn Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Tumblr media
A Boca Raton, Florida-based physician, Dr. Robert Kast has practiced independently as an OB/GYN since 1985. Dr. Robert Kast holds board certification in obstetrics and gynecology.
Individuals with a doctor of medicine (MD) can begin the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) board certification process in their fourth year of postgraduate residency. No matter when MDs choose to pursue board certification through the ABOG, they must pass the written ABOG qualifying exam. They must also have amassed a collection of cases that reflect their unique care practices, and draw upon these cases while taking the ABOG oral Certifying Exam.
A panel of respected OB/GYN experts administer the final certifying exam, with a focus that is 30 percent obstetrics, 30 percent gynecology, 30 percent general women's health and office practice, and 10 percent cross content (which ranges from ethical conduct among colleagues to communicating effectively with both patients and their loved ones).

The Resident Patient (1985)

Elevance Health: Transforming Healthcare for a Better Future
Tumblr media
Welcome to an introduction and guide to Elevance Health, formerly known as Anthem, Inc. This leading healthcare company in the United States has a rich history dating back to 1944. With remarkable growth and a commitment to excellent service and effective business strategies, Elevance Health has set ambitious goals through its recent rebranding to address current challenges in the healthcare market and pave the way for future success. Let's explore the company's history, philosophy, and future plans.
History: Company Overview
Elevance Health's journey began in 1944 when a group of doctors in Indianapolis founded Associated Insurance Companies Inc. (AICI) to offer health insurance to local residents. AICI expanded its operations to multiple states and eventually changed its name to Community Mutual Insurance Company. In 1985, a merger with another Indianapolis-based health insurer, Mutual Hospital Insurance Inc., resulted in the formation of Anthem, the company we know today. A significant milestone occurred in 2004 when Anthem merged with WellPoint Health Networks, Inc. in a $16.4 billion deal, creating the largest healthcare company in the United States at that time, serving over 28 million members across 13 states. While the company changed its name to WellPoint Inc., it continued operating under the Anthem brand in many key markets. Anthem made strategic acquisitions, including IngenioRx in 2010 and Amerigroup Corporation in 2012, expanding its reach and diversifying revenue streams, particularly in the Medicaid managed care market. In 2017, Anthem attempted to acquire Cigna Corporation, but the merger was blocked due to concerns about competition and consumer prices. Anthem also launched its own pharmacy benefits management company, IngenioRx, in 2020.
Health Insurance Industry: Influence and Dominance
Anthem's growth and dominance in the health insurance industry can be attributed to several factors. The company's large size grants it substantial negotiating power with healthcare providers, resulting in competitive pricing for customers. Anthem has prioritized preventive care, investing significantly in programs that help customers maintain good health and avoid costly medical procedures, thereby reducing healthcare costs and improving health outcomes. While concerns have been raised about Anthem's dominance, such as higher prices, reduced competition, and limited innovation, the company's position has positively impacted many Americans. The company offers a range of healthcare plans, including Medicaid, Medicare, and employer-sponsored health coverage. Its investment in telemedicine has increased healthcare accessibility and convenience.
Philosophy: Core Values and Business Strategies
Anthem, now Elevance Health, is committed to providing high-quality insurance coverage with a patient-centered approach. They offer flexible, comprehensive, and cost-effective healthcare plans to ensure accessibility for everyone. Exceptional customer service is a core value, with a focus on customer education through a team of experts. Innovation is vital to Elevance Health's business strategies. They continuously develop new products and resources, leveraging technology to improve customer experience. Partnering with healthcare providers ensures a wide network and strives for quality care, cost reduction, and streamlined processes.
Rebranding to Elevance Health: Goals & Objectives
Rebranding to Elevance Health represents a new beginning, allowing the company to redefine itself and present its values in a fresh way. Goals include improving service delivery, establishing a stronger identity, enhancing strategic positioning, and fostering employee engagement.
Current State of Healthcare Market: Challenges & Opportunities
The healthcare industry is experiencing shifts in priorities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Preventive measures are emphasized, and healthcare spending has increased due to aging populations and chronic illnesses. However, challenges like rising treatment costs, quality assurance, and staff shortages exist. Opportunities for innovation through technology, data analytics, and mobile devices are being explored to address these challenges and reduce long-term healthcare costs.
How Elevance Health Works
Elevance Health assists healthcare organizations, payers, and providers in reducing costs and improving outcomes through technology and data-driven solutions. Services include Virtual Chief Medical Information Officer, Clinical Data Abstraction, Revenue Cycle Management, Population Health, and Telemedicine solutions, among others.
Future Plans: Long-Term Vision
Elevance Health aims to expand its service portfolio by introducing new services like behavioral health, addiction treatment, and telemedicine. Geographical expansion through new clinics and partnerships with healthcare providers in different regions is planned. Service quality will be improved through staff training and upgrading technology. Competitive pricing and partnerships with insurance companies will enable affordable healthcare services.
Conclusion
Elevance Health, formerly Anthem, Inc., has established itself as a major player in the health insurance industry with a history dating back to 1944. Its commitment to customer service and innovative business strategies has propelled its growth. Through rebranding, Elevance Health aims to transform healthcare by improving service delivery, establishing a stronger identity, and embracing opportunities for a better future.   Sources: THX News & Elevance Health. Functional Medicine is the Future of Medicine
Functional medicine is a personalized, science-based approach to healthcare that goes beyond treating symptoms to find the underlying reasons for sickness and take the necessary steps to resolve them. Traditional medicine places a strong emphasis on using medication to treat ailments. In contrast, functional medicine empowers patients and providers to collaborate and address the intricate root causes of disease and promote maximum wellness through dietary and lifestyle changes. Check out Kare Health & Wellness if you're interested in visiting a Functional Medicine Springfield Missouri clinic. Its practitioners invest a lot of time in getting to know their patients and creating a timeline that considers how a person's interactions with their genetic and environmental factors have led to long-term chronic diseases.
