The thing I hate the most about "the Promise" having Aang promote antimiscegenation is that when Katara points out that that would mean they would have to be apart, she doesn't even talk about her own feelings on the subject. She acts like this is a sacrifice she is willing to make if Aang declares it wrong for people of other nations to be together.

Like, what happened to the Katara who was enamored with the forbidden love story of Oma and Shu? What happened to the Katara who cared about justice, not just for herself but for others? Why does Katara seem to have no opinions about her relationship with Aang one way or the other? Why does Aang get to make all of the decisions in the relationship, not only about when it starts but when it ends, while Katara is just a passive observer? Why does Katara want to be with someone who she thinks might break up with her because she's from another nation? The fact that she even thinks Aang might consider this (and would let him do it) is not a great sign.

Thinking about how much it annoys me that "the Promise" treats Zuko talking to Ozai and not telling anyone as "keeping secrets" and "is Zuko turning evil again?" And it suddenly occurred to me that this is the same problem I have when people in the fandom blame Zuko for not telling the gaang about Ozai's genocide plan earlier. Aside from the gaang also not telling Zuko that they were going to fight Ozai after the comet, causing a mutual misunderstanding, Zuko tells the gaang why he didn't tell them earlier. He tells them that he was ashamed. He sat in that meeting and couldn't say anything and was ashamed of his own helplessness because that's what abuse is. And like. The same thing is happening when Zuko goes to talk to Ozai in the comics because he's desperate for someone to talk to and ends up humiliated and gaslit because even negative attention from the abusive parent is better than nothing. Sorry an abuse victim didn't divulge every second of their abuse to you. They were ashamed and didn't know how to tell you that.

Here's an excerpt from the scene in chapter 7:

He held his breath and prayed for the words to come, this time. His trembling hand sought hers and, as if she knew she would make speaking tenfold easier, she opened up and allowed his fingers to curl in hers.

“Zelda.” His voice broke over her name anyway. “You don’t have to share what upsets you, I will never press you to do so. But you cannot quench my wish to help you carry your burden, whatever it is.” He looked back at the four-poster-bed, the blankets and pillows partly hidden by forest green-colored curtains. “I offered because… I know you haven’t been treated well since your father died. You said you wouldn’t mind sleeping in the common room, and although I admire your dedication to our… goal, I still want to… want to…"

Her eyes had grown wider, the grip on his fingers firmer and Link already felt the words in his mouth getting plush and difficult to get out. Damn it, he hadn't even made his point yet!

"I want y-you to reach blindly for your stirrups because you know I'm there to set them for you,” he pushed through. “I want—I want to lead you up the stairs so often that you have forgotten how it is to walk them on your own. I want you to speak quietly because you know that I'll listen and not because someone drilled into you that your opinion has no value. I want that frown you wore with your family gone. I want your smile to grow unconscious because I hold the door open so often. I want you to roll your eyes at me because I’ll help you from your horse again.” She swallowed hard, her eyes shining with unshed tears. He hoped they were the good kind of tears. Link squeezed her hand, gathering courage to continue. “I want you to get used again to the respect you deserve, Zelda. Grow tired of it, if you must, but I won’t rest until then. So please, let me sleep in that armchair.”

She closed her eyes, forcing two teardrops to break free and fall into her lap. She had his hand in an iron grip, but her lips remained sealed. Had he gone too far? Was it too early to offer her his loyalty?
