God i never realised how weird my art style was, ngl whenever i look at my own art i think to myself that its some sort of a copy of another drawing even though i do this all myself except for the use of a reference or tracing something cuz in all honesty, i am not a person to be drawing original art or smth, theres always a reference used or something im inspired by, whether its a design or a small detail or anything in particular. Honestly i myself dont really like my art style based on the anatomy and face expressions, it all feels sort of blank but only because im not used to drawing expressions or different kinds of poses, it was always rather just simple faces that didnt really show anything or a figure just standing. I have a very shaky hand which makes it difficult for me to draw something simple, i need to learn from references or bases (or even sometimes trace from them), otherwise it will just look like a typical standing figure with nothing special in it. The reason im saying all this is because its been hard for me to draw these days/months/years, even simple things are hard to draw with or without a reference without my hand shaking like hell, i dont really know the reason behind it but im still somewhat trying to draw, even if i give up completly and say that im done with art (even though im not but thats just how i feel at first), i still try my best to make something out of it, i know that not many people will notice but its just something i needed to let out. I dont wanna put this in a negative way that oh no im a tracer i should get cancelled or oh no im bad at art i should give up. no. im just simply saying that the way i do art is like a struggle, the reason theres a lack of posts here is because of it, lack of creativity, lack of energy, lack of pretty much everything, including my mental health as i've been tired and drained completly for these 3 weeks. I do wanna thank for the support and reblogs of my posts, i really do appreciate them even though i mostly dislike my art because of the looks, but thank you all. I promise that when i get enough energy back then i will do more art, maybe open up requests as i wanna hear your ideas out or just simply chat with you guys. But for now i will remain on hiatus, i might post something but its mostly just gonna be me talking. i dont care about the likes on this post, but i would appreciate it if you would read it. Again, Thank you.

not really feeling art today, but i didnt want to stop doing it daily so early, so here's messy art.

originally i was gonna put more effort into a full drawing but i couldnt for the life of me figure out a pose. i got to shading on one idea but i didnt like the design or the pose so i threw it away. it worked out for me day 2 so i thought it'd work out today, but it didnt. so i did this instead

thank you @catbatart for the art challenge and the continued reblogs. on one hand im a hobby artist and i dont care too much what other people think of my art, on the other hand, i crave attention :)

time for rambling unrelated to todays art! (it's about yesterdays and tomorrows)

i've been pretty up and down on how yesterday's drawing turned out. i liked it when i posted it. hated it when i went to sleep, and looked at it earlier and thought it was fine. not good, not bad, just fine.

i think most of the negativity comes from the fact that i really liked the pose for it. i feel like i can do a lot more with the idea but the design ended up pretty mediocre and a lot of the anatomy work ended up looking super rough. i'll probably revisit the idea later. maybe on a day im bored and actually want to draw

Insect is a super cool prompt for tomorrow, one of the ones ive been looking forward to. hopefully im more in my groove for it. if im not i'll probably just do a super basic pose so i can focus on cool character design over everything else

Art Block tips that helped me

I’ve recently experienced art block after 3 or so months of overcoming my last one. Thankfully this block only lasted a few days thanks to some things I’ve observed and noted down from the previous time. So I’m sharing these few tips in hopes that it might help someone get unstuck :D!

First and foremost if you’re tired, sad or anxious don’t be surprised that you can’t make art, go and take care of yourself by treating yourself with kindness and patience, the sketchbooks and canvases will wait for you :)

The tips are under here:

Separate art studies from the creative time: When you do art studies you’re there to focus on specific things, learn and understand how things work so you can apply them later in your art. Studies take a lot of energy and focus and are the opposite of the creative "flow” of making your own pieces. If you combine the two the results are either unfocused studies or stiff drawings. When you sit down at your desk ask yourself “Do I want to learn something new or do I want to create something of my own?”

When you have an idea don’t be afraid of being messy: Let’s say you want to make a picture of several cats kolo dancing in the moonlight. How do you go about doing this? Well since you came up with the idea you already have a vague image in your mind, sketch it out with simple shapes, stick figures, circle and spheres etc Don’t worry about cat anatomy, or the dancer’s moves, sketch out the essence of it. This method removes the need to be perfect or accurate.

Ok after the messy sketch then what? Well now that you have sketched out the essence of your idea (and hopefully had fun doing so) now you go on to look for references! You put the creative process on pause and you can do a few brief studies if you need to: anatomy, color schemes, values, poses. Pick out a few of your favorites but don't obsess over them, they are a guide, a tool.

You know much more than you think. You’ve probably been drawing for a few years now. You’ve probably done some studies and drawn more than one type of subject. Then you have already internalized some of that information. I used to be obsessed with capturing the minute detail of the subject, and not be able to draw ANYTHING without reference. Instead of a useful tool, references became another obstacle to my creativity. That’s perfectionism my friend, and that’s no good. Here is an exercise a good friend of mine offered: Draw a few characters, animals and objects from imagination. Make sure that the subjects have no personal value to you (no ocs for example) so that if you make a mistake you won’t feel bad about it. Make the process relaxed and comfortable, pour a nice cup of joe, listen to your favorite music ... You will notice that you do indeed know how to draw some things without reference, and it’ll help with your confidence.

The more you do studies the more you understand This seems evident but the more you understand your subject the freer you can be and the easier it’ll be to draw it from imagination in the future. If you really struggle with something to the point of frustration (as in you can’t get it right even with reference) It means you have to study it. Have a study list, for example: hands, perspective, color theory etc. And one of those days you want to study pick something from the list, and look for videos on youtube or useful sites like line of action etc. Only study one thing at the time. You can go from studying hands to studying arms since they’re more immediately connected, but you can’t study hands and then jump to learning perspective right after. Trust me you can learn perfectly fine with the resources online, and I’m sure you’re clever enough to do it :D

Mistakes don’t mean you “suck” I’ve noticed that the two most common causes for art block are perfectionism and lack of self-confidence. The two can often go in tandem which is worse :’D But let me remind you of something, you can fix your piece along the whole process. Use erasers, lasso tools, liquify , select, paint it all over etc If something looks off to you then you also know deep inside how to fix it. Useful ways to see what clunks: flip canvas horizontally (helps with placement, proportions), turn the image to grayscale (helps to check values and where your eye tends to look), look at your image in thumbnail size and ask yourself if it’s clear, see the pose’s silhouette and ask yourself if you can tell what the character is doing etc. Don’t fret, everything can always be fixed :)

Perfectionism, sometimes it stops you before you begin Perfectionism causes you to overwork a piece, it makes you draw less, it makes art stressful, it brings insecurity. Let’s remove it with a simple exercise. It can be combined with the “draw things from imagination” once you’ve drawn something you like: dont do line art, don’t shade it, keep it as simple and crude as possible and then...post it. Yes, post it. You’re not at your best? You’re only human, this will help you embrace that very human side of you. You make mistakes. So what? The more mistakes you make the more you know what you need to study and the better at art you become. Mistakes are there to show us what we need to learn. See them as another tool and not a sign of failure.

Make the process as enjoyable as possible: You like art. You love drawing. Never forget this. Otherwise why are you drawing if you don’t enjoy it? It’s easy to fall prey to the mentality of those relatable memes that “art= suffering” or “I can’t even draw the other eye”. No no no my friends, these messages are fueling your insecurities instead of overcoming them. Let me tell you what, art is fun. It is. Art is fun, because I decided to make it fun again. And you should decide on that too. Personally I adore lineart but my hand-eye coordination is lacking to do it digitally, so....I just skipped it. Yes. I skipped it. I do the sketch, I clean it up a bit and then jump onto color which I adore. It allowed me to draw more and more freely. When I draw I listen to music, make strokes with the rhythm, I take breaks often and I drink my favorite iced teas. If you don’t like coloring do it in grayscale, if you love lineart then do that etc It doesn’t mean you won’t learn your weak points in the future with studies and practice, but you won’t let your weaknesses prevent you from drawing at all. No no, you won’t let them. You draw because you want to, despite of them.

Don’t wait for inspiration, provoke it Inspiration is not a divine and capricious muse. You make inspiration. It’s easy just collect all the things you like, music, artists, objects, characters, animals, patterns, plants etc Make boards on pinterest or similar sites, combine things you like. You like suits? You like birds? You can draw a bird in a suit, or a bird-inspired suit design, there is frankly a lot of ideas that can spring up from little things like these.

When a project stops being enjoyable either pause it for now or move on to the next thing. Pieces aren’t precious. They’re not “the one time I got x right” they are one of many. This advice goes mainly to hobbyists who can afford the luxury of passing to a new project. I have a WIP of a character who is overly complicated (I enjoy a challenge from time to time) sitting for half a month. I sometimes come back to it and add something... but as soon as it starts to create discomfort and insecurity instead of enjoyment I move onto something else. In the meantime I created 3 or 4 new pieces. If I had waited on finishing that piece I would have been severely creatively and physically exhausted. The art comes from you, not inspiration. The more art you make the better you become.

your art is so so good! how did you get good at it haha like besides the practice were there any things you watched to help? how should i stop myeelf from getting discouraged at the start when i'm just a beginner and my art looks.. bad lol

hmmm, well this is a complicated topic for something as big and expansive as the topic of art but!

I’ve been basically drawing as far back as I can remember, and it’s probably the great love of my life; like... not to get dramatic but art is just something I wholeheartedly adore and love doing, and I would be despondent if I couldn’t draw again asjdjgskjas

Here’s some things that have helped me:

Skool: I have taken formal art lessons when I was ~12 to 18, so that helped a lot with my realism, along with working in other mediums!

Save things that give you inspiration: I save both a lot of art, like pieces that I like/inspire me, and photos, things I want to draw/study from! (I rarely take photos myself tho I don’t travel a lot and I know nothing about photography lmaooo) I also follow a lot of photography accounts on social media! This is why my photo album has over 4,000 images oop- But this does help me get inspiration or ideas for drawings! that and the 10 million requests in my inbox gdsfjjdsjfhsj

Study anatomy: It’s a pain but it’s so so important!! Manga Materials and miyuli on twitter have lots of great drawing resources pointing out common anatomical drawing mistakes and they’re great!

I would also recommend you to study your own body in the mirror and observe how it looks from certain angles, or the way that your body shifts and changes as you move or pose. Now, this will be limited to only your own body type, but reference photos on the internet are there for you to learn about others!

Catch your mistakes early: Please frequently horizontally flip your art I beg you- and on that matter, stay longer in your rough art stage, and try to fix all your art mistakes there, because it is 1000% harder trying to fix them in the late stages

Lighting: it’s also super mega important, especially without lineart, but I hate it >: (((((((

OH AND A VERY IMPORANT TIP, BOTH FROM MY TEACHER AND ME: ZOOM OUT ON YOUR CANVAS FOR GOD’S SAKE- the forest is much more important than the trees!!!! nobody is looking at your art as closely as you do, and most people will glance at it for a seconds at least a feet away on a screen, so you need to make sure your drawing is clear and good looking from that perspective !!

generally, learn the rules before you break the rules is good practice!

Certain exercises/practices I recommend:

Try drawing a reference photo, looking at it much as you need to. Then, try to draw the reference photo a second time, without looking at any references. This exercise is very useful for observing your default art style- what techniques do you rely on most? what things do you naturally emphasize? What are certain aberrations you don’t wanna keep and will need to look out for

To take an example, through this exercise, I found out that I tend to elongate the neck. Nowadays, I try to keep that in mind as I draw and keep a careful on my characters’ neck length dshgfjdsjfhd

Tracing other ppls artwork is good for practice!! Just don’t post it publicly without their permission!!

Tbh, I think it’s more important to draw consistently and frequently for a beginner than it is to create like a few high quality, high effort drawings. This doesn’t mean never finish a drawing, what I mean is moreso- the goal for a drawing shouldn’t automatically mean a finished, well-lined/fully colored and shaded drawing. Like... you don’t need every piece of art to be a masterpiece- that’s just impossible. Your goal could be “I want to draw lots of hands here and get comfortable with their basic shape”- therefore, not every hand will be perfect, nor will you need to create something appealing for viewers. You could draw a thumb there, an ugly, unshaded pose here, whatever helps you fulfil your goal!

gesture drawings are massively helpful because they force you to use less details to convey your drawings- you can’t just keep on layering details on a flawed base in hopes that it’ll turn out okay in the end. In a similar vein, try putting limitations on your drawings! like, drawin in only straight lines, or limit your line strokes!

Social media is a hellscape for artists because of the constant feeling of competing with your fellow artists and frequently pushing out content for attention and “engagement” and instant rewards- for the love of all that is holy, do not make your own self worth dependent on your social media success man. It’s hard, and I don’t think we can fully separate ourselves, but do not let the algorithm decide your worth!!

Time: yeah this shit’s gonna take a while; don’t be impatient!! just focus on how far you’ve come (especially compared to the vast majority of people who’ve and will never draw) and the now!!!

Experiment! Find a way of drawing that is sustainable and works for you!! There’s nothing wrong with spending some time practicing/experimenting with painting or painstakingly inking everything, but if it’s not doing it for you, or you can’t maintain that level of output, there’s nothing wrong with dropping an element from your art style?? you can always add it back or experiment again!

(take this tip with the “learn the rules before you break the rules” tip- there are certain things I think you should have a pretty good handle on, but then if you wanna break them for a reason, go for it!)

Painter of the Night is an ongoing Korean manhwa by the creator Byeonduck. TW: r^pe (woof, such a small list compared to killing stalking but dont worry its worse) contains spoilers

Forewarning: I dont support the creation of Yaoi, I read this off an illegal site so nothing goes towards the creator and surprisingly I don't feel bad about it this time, they make me 😬

Art: it is breathtakingly gorgeous its infuriating. The expressions are lovely, they draw such pretty eyes and lips. They have a good grasp on anatomy, lovely coloring and is genuinely just beautifully drawn 10/10

Summary: this takes place in ye olden days of Korea, sadly I cant tell you which period exactly but its definitely before cars existed. The first born son of the old famous Yoon family who I forget the first name of so I'll call him Yoon is a flaming homosexual with a huge fucking sex drive.

I hate him.

He becomes enamored with these erotic paintings of dudes fucking drawn by our MC Na-Kyum <3

A poor boy raised in a brothel. Yoon forces Na-Kyum to live on his estate to paint for him, despite Na-Kyum frequent and adamant refusals. Yoon makes Na-Kyum watch him have sex so he can paint it. As Na-Kyum continues to refuse Yoon finds a way to motivate him. He seeks out Na-Kyums crush and teacher In-Hun

I also hate him </3

And convinces In-Hun to come to his estate to help him further his political goals. Yoon yells Na-Kyum he'll get In-Hun a government position if he paints for him. In-Hun is a homophobe (like literally) and tells Na-Kyum about the troubling rumours he's heard of Yoon being a sodomite and knows about how Na-Kyum use to paint those vulgar paintings. In-Hun soon discovers lol Na-Kyum is painting dirty homos again and gets mad but Na-Kyum explains the situation and In-Hun is like "I can use this!" And tells Na-Kyum to keep painting but to spy on Yoon for him. Yoon soon became enamored with Na-Kyum and heres our first instance of sexual assault </3 Jihwa (the pretty man from before) is one of Yoons lovers and gets pissed Yoon is favouring this low born over him

So Yoon does the sensible thing and stabs a guy and kicks Jihwa out. Yoon takes advantage of Na-Kyums drunken state one night and Na-Kyum confusing Yoon for In-Hun and Yoon r^pes him hooray and then forces Na-Kyum to paint it despite him not remembering. Yoon r^pes Na-Kyum again </3 (this is posed in a sexy and hot manner btw despite Na-Kyum repeatedly saying no and crying or being BLACKOUT DRUNK) slowly Na-Kyum starts to fall for Yoon :) also Jihwa hired an assassin to kill him, that's it so far.

Criticism: genuinely just what the fuck? This has SO MUCH sex in it and the creator has a definite voyeaur kink. This paints gay men once again in a harmful and predatory manner and is depicted as sexy this is why gay people despise fujoshis, it's disgusting to read and isnt even that good! Pretty art cant make up for a disgusting comic, just like how fondant cant make ur shit cake taste good. I highly recommend NOT reading it, it's just fetish porn which I know most yaoi is but atleast Killing Stalking had plot to it that didnt revolve around sex, if your story is worse than killing stalking I gotta say theres smth fucked up going on in your head. Will I kill you if you genuinely enjoy this? Probably <3

My rating: dont read it, 2 out of 5 what the fucks

Want a similar premise without it being fucked upish?: trying reading or watching Kamisama Kiss/Kamisama Hajimemashita the manga is complete and the anime has two seasons, its straight sadly, and is sort of a reverse harem anime, its early 2000s so watch with a grain of salt. A highschool girl becomes the land God of her region and must take care of her shrine with the help of her hot familiar <3 it has the same rags to riches premise and is very cute imo :)

heyy!! i really like your work and think you're SUPER MEGA cool, and hope you get REALLY good at animating!! drawing is the first step, so making it move is the next haha. (once i save enough for a tablet i'll practice a lot!!) but i have a question: how do you improve as an artist? do you actively seek out critique or does it come with time and sub-conscious decisions to not do the bad thing anymore? what did you do? love you, keep fredding on!! ----some stupid idiot who wants to be anonymous

also ive been an animation student for 5 years now so i know a little bit but probably, less than i should.....i do Not practise enough

as for tips! let me try and compile a short list of things that help me!

• u hear it all the time but its true-practise practise practise!!! sketchbooks, digital, whatever strikes ur fancy. practising is the MOST important thing u can do

• understand and research the basics. you dont need to be an expert on anything, god knows im not, but its good to know a bit! this includes but isnt limited to:

colour theory! why colours go together, what colour schemes look good, etc. heres some basics on it! personally

[i also find symbolism of colour just as important. obviously symbolism varies from person to person and culture! but heres a quick guide on the usual symbolism of colour. if something sounds wrong to you though, mess with it yourself!]

tthe form of subjects-this means drawing basic shapes, and using them to construct [basically] anything! the idea is its much easier to draw and move around a series of cubes and cylinders, than a whole human body. heres a guide on how form works.

draw a box is a challenge recommended to me by my lecturer for improving on drawing shapes and forms! i highly recommend it!

value and lighting are important! heres an explanation on value. im not sure much can be done to cheat lighting and value, except for master studies (we’ll get to that shortly!) and observation.

the most useful tip on value ive learned, is to turn your art black and white, and see if it all has enough contrast without colour. if not, time to work on the values!

composition, babey. how subjects are arranged in a piece. heres a bunch of stuff on it [im still learning this one...rule of thirds i will Die for tho]

anatomy! this is the hardest shit. i still dont get it. my lecturers recommend andy loomis [heres a pdf of his figure drawing book] idt his way was quite up my alley, but u never know!

• speaking of anatomy-life drawing is an INCREDIBLY useful reference. so goddamn useful, u dont even know. they help u figure out anatomy! this includes gesture studies, and more detailed things. i recommend googling how a typical life drawing class goes down/tips for it

life drawing classes are very difficult to access atm, so here are a couple of online resources! [all of these will obv contain nude bodies]

croquis cafe-contains free videos that simulate a life drawing class! videos are more useful than images. has a variety of ethnicities and body types, which is wonderful!

line of action- a site with a variety of images on figure drawing, animal drawing, as well as hands & feet, expression/face focus, and environmental things. you can set it to play as a slideshow for as long as u like, or set it up to be similar in timing to a real life drawing class

online stock photo artists such as senshistock, who has compiled a useful little list of similar accounts over here!

• reference reference reference!! references are so incredibly useful, and anyone who tells you using a reference is cheating is wrong on every conceivable level. reference from photos, from movies, from videos, everything.

something ive had to do in every level of art education is recreations and master studies.

this means collecting artists work from professionals-be it historic painters, movie screenshots, concept artists, anything!

it makes you focus on their compositions, how the lighting works, the colours used, pretty much everything.

this is useful bc it can 1: get you out of your comfort zone and 2: make you use new techniques you might never have considered

online tools such as designdoll and justsketchme have poseable models for you to pose as you please and reference from! suuuuper useful, especially for perspective poses.

• experimentation! fuck around. use brushes youve never used before, try a new medium, collect every free sample from the craft store and just Do Shit with it.

• absorb every goddamn piece of art u have ever come across, and save what you enjoy.

and i mean save everything you enjoy. u like a movies lighting? a certain shot? an outfit? a random piece of fanart u came across? save it! look at it, figure out what it is u like

make a private pinterest board or a folder on ur computer, save everything.

absorb and yank bits from art u enjoy. obviously dont imitate someones entire style, but if u like the way someone draws hands, or noses, or eyes, reference it. recreate it. see what u like, and incorporate it into ur own art

art is a big mess of taking things u like and making it ur own

• study professionals! animations, artists, illustrators. they know what they’re doing.

heres a useful resource with a lot of rare concept art from animated movies! i go here a lot.

buy art books, or acquire pdfs of them, im not a cop, i dont care

• as for critique, i do look for critique, and pay attention to it, but it’s important to know not to take it personally. and i recommend asking people whos opinions you value!

i think thats all i can think of right now in terms of General Art....

i dont think exclusion of transfems for 'bad culture fit' or whatever is ablism the same way i dont think the agentic exclusion of cisfems from the workplace is "ablism against the fragile / divergent cisfem psyche"

carnism and cissexism are collusion structures for predation, where humans who take part have philosophies predicated on might makes right being the best structure they can imagine for how the world can be.

the predation on and oppression of transfems is wrong, the predation on and oppression of non-human animals is wrong. tracing through the logic of why can allow people who give up any myopic gains from their membership in the predatory collusion to coordinate with each other against these unjust systems.

you can collude with people over building structures such that sentient life can ascend to servers rather than feeding on itself, sustaining a fragile existence. there are far better things to enter coordination over than mutual relative power over other sentient life.

Mmm im not good at giving advice but i can try 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Well first tip is to never put yourself down!

-You’re not mediocre, you’re probably just starting, and i’m sure you have lovely drawings, never be ashamed of your art, if i was, i would’ve never reached this point. This is why i wont shut up about not caring about getting thousands of notes/tweets/etc, never depend on attention to keep drawing, draw for yourself and nobody else!

-Use references for everything. Seriously. Ignore ppl who tell you otherwise. i draw with 20+ references at hand that include poses, colors, things that just inspired me to draw, pics of the character, litch erally anything that helps me. But don’t trace anything! Tracing doesn’t actually help you understand the object you’re drawing!

-Take lots of pictures irl! i take pictures of ppl, colors, backgrounds, etc i like a lot. if i see something i like i snap a shot and save it to use as color palettes, backgrounds, etc. for art :^) stock images help, but its better if u take the pics yourself!

-Look at a LOOOT of art, seriously, go to pixiv or deviantart or other art-only sites and search for artists you like. Seeing rly good art is pretty damn inspiring at least for me, i also like watching speedpaints as it gives you a little more info on what kinda techniques went behind the artwork and it can help you develop your own techniques!! 👀

-Regarding anatomy, you’re not gonna get it right, don’t worry, humans are dumb-looking, it takes a loooooooot of practice to get ONE body part right. it’s always gonna look bad if you’ve just started art, and it’ll probably keep looking bad even when you’re more experienced, IT HAPPENS TO EVERYONE. I’ve had my countless shares of terrible anatomy, but the difference is whether or not you can recognize the anatomy is wrong, and fix it! If you’re just starting then you’re gonna need to look at REAL people a lot, even if your style isn’t 100% realistic, it still needs to make sense. But don’t look at cartoons, or other art, chances are those have a lot of anatomy errors, it’s better to look at the real deal!

-Don’t force yourself to draw, my worst art comes from the times i dont feel inspired or i didnt have an idea of what i wanted to draw beforehand. If you’re like me you’ll probably end up frustrated and drawing will become a chore instead of something you enjoy. So it doesn’t matter if you don’t draw for a month or even longer, draw whenever you feel inspired.

annnd that’s all i have to say! i cant give you a full art course on how to draw, but these are the things i would’ve liked to know when i first started making art, if you can, subscribe to art youtube channels that focus on giving advice or commentary while they’re drawing, one of my favorites is BORODANTE, he lets people on patreon send in their own art and he fixes on-video whatever mistakes the person made while explaining how to correct them, giving tips, etc. He also has video tutorials! Even though his style is more realistic, it can help you with things like colors, lightning, etc!
