yaay the lil cutie :] was waiting for someone to request her!
Junebug 🪲
• she was made much later in The Neighborhood. the city network urged them to make a character that could appeal to little girls who were more fond of girly things, so Al came up with the idea of a preteen girl who could teach kids about being responsible and independence while still having time for fun.
• so many parents HATED her character. the thing that saved her from being removed was the fact that 97% of the children watching loved her and actually started doing tasks their own parents couldn’t get them to do just because she did them.
• staff actually liked her a lot. her silliness and genuine innocence managed to overpower most feelings of distain.
• bad habit of going places she wasn’t supposed to be. there’s a bunch of bloopers in the archives where she ruined the mood by running in front of the camera, yelling out something random, or doing something in the back when she wasn’t even supposed to be there. one of the funniest examples was Junebug in the background of a shot, awkwardly trying to climb down a tree, only to give up and crash to the ground with Richie trying his hardest to stay in character.
• to everyone’s confusion, she’d sometimes ended up in the offices: the main theory being she wiggled her way through a vent. the writers would let her explore before taking her back to the set before anyone figured out she was missing. this was so common, she got into the habit of bringing stuff as ‘gifts’ with every visit. the explanation for the prop food in the cabinets.
• oh, her handler was STRESSED. she was an older woman, well into her 40s, who never married (fiance died in the war) or had children. she’d lightly joke about how Junebug gave her the full experience for free.
• was the wrong height for the first few months of her being around, around four feet tall. this was a mistake, as she was meant to be around the other puppets height, yet didn’t even go past Norman’s chest. she was eventually fixed, to everyone’s dissapointment. the other puppets still ‘mourn’ how tiny she used to be.
• although she brings up her parents and mentions living with her mom, they were never played by anybody. her mother was just a puppet hand that was being controlled by a puppeteer offscreen and her dad never made a physical appearance whatsoever. it took her a long time to understand she wasn’t supposed to point out that this yellow felt hand wasn’t even attached to anything but a stick and to just play along for the skit.
• George filled in the role of an uncle for her both onscreen and off. they became really close buddies despite it all being scripted, with Junebug seeing him as this cool adult she wanted to be like and George just wanting to help her out in any way he could.
• can’t stay still, insists she’ll die if she tries. Gordon would prove her otherwise by yelling, ‘the floor is lava.’
• Junebug was intentionally written to be neurodivergent. Al never told anyone this, mainly because the network did not approve of other suggestions he tried to include in the show and doubted they’d be open to the idea.
• became a bit more sassy after the shutdown. likes talking back to Ricky just because she knows he can’t do much about it.
• Gordon constantly has to pry her mouth open because she’s always eating something she isn’t supposed to. he’s not sure whether she learned this from Goblette, the pups, or even some sort of commercial from the television, just that he’s tired of her spitting it all back up an hour later. if you shook her around, it would sound like a bag of marbles.
• all the Junebug duplicates made a little club for themselves. unfortunately for everyone involved its Rule of Rose 2.0.
• her mask being the ‘agony’ one is exactly what was going on in her head after watching tv. she did not take what she saw well at all, even if there had been an adult figure to help her through it, she would have the most trouble trying to accept it all.
• in the show, she was the ‘oldest’ out of all the other younger puppets, acting like the responsible older sister for them. she’s the only one left, as most of those kids ended up in the unfriendly neighborhood. this is the main reason she has duplicates.

🪲🪲🪲🪲🪲 ¡¡Scarab Beetles!! 🪲🪲🪲🪲🪲 So fun collaborating on this with friend and songstress Sara Melson @saramelson, who wrote and composed an excellent song about the Scarab beetle to go with our video! Wonder Science filmed these careening van-like Coleptera in Los Angeles during their peak late-summer season. The family Scarabaeidae consists of over 30,000 species of beetle, and beyond their rich history as a sacred symbol in several countries (the most notable being Ancient Eygpt), each species has their own unique characteristics, and several serve vital purposes in their respective ecosystems. Some of the major players in the Scarab family are Dung beetles, June beetles, Rhinoceros beetles, and Flower Chafers, like the glossy green giants you see here, which are called Cotinis Mutabilis or as they’re colloquially dubbed, the Figeater Beetle. Flower Chafers do what you think they do, bump into flowers! These gentle fruit, pollen and petal eating beauties pollinate their environments while eating their fill! Another ecosystem contributor worth mentioning is the subfamily of Dung Beetles, which help to recycle waste and carrion. And finally the famous, or perhaps infamous, member of the Scarab family: June Beetles. 🪲Shino comes home from a long day of teaching with a soft smile on his face. He sits to remove his shoes at the walkway. Not minding the small single file trail of sugar ants that trail through the hallway. They make way for him; as he does for them. He removes his coat and calls out to you like clockwork.
🪲"Home, Honeybee." Is today's greeting; yesterday's was, "I'm back, Lovebug." Tomorrow's will be something along the lines of, "Missed you today, Junebug." Or "Happy to see you, firefly."(He hasn't decided which yet.)
🪲He tries not to sneak up on you, he knows he is a bit quiet. When he finds you he places a hand on the small of your back or the dip of you neck, whichever is available, and places a cheek against your head. This is almost a hug, being an outsider in his own village made him hesitant with physical affection. This intimate action is for you alone and used to leave his hand shaking when he first began to court you.
🪲When he finds you upset he is instantly panicked to the bone. His insides are thrumming, beatles buzzing, heart pumping,it is a bug like instinct meant to push him into action, but of course he remains calm and composed on the outside, he has trained for year to perfect his calm facade. What you see instead is a soft frown on his face and upturned eyebrows.
🪲"What's troubling you?" His voice is soft, cooing, of course this is a talent he picked up in his teaching profession. It's different with you of course. He speaks to the children as their guide and sensei; You are, in his eyes aways, his equal. He gets down to eye level when he speaks to you like this, he is rather tall. He may come down a few inches by leaning on a wall or door frame, if your sitting-he doesn't mind getting down on a knee, and if your laying in bed or on the couch he will crouch down- knees bent, forearms on his thighs, and hands clasped together inbetween them fingers clinched tight and knuckles pink under the pressure.
🪲He is a fixer by nature. Should it be a specific thing that is bothering you, one that he is capable of fixing, he will not hesitate to take it into his own hands. He isn't boastful about it either, he sees this a part of being partners. You're a team. He wakes in the middle of the night to slip out of bed and down the hall and get to work. When he is done he leaves a small note or surprise there. Imagine dreading returning to that troublesome issue or problem only to open the drawer, cabinet, or box to find it empty except for a small praying mantis, with a note in one of its pincers. It sees you see it, and does that little dance they do in celebration. The note is simple and direct, "I love you." or "Have a better day today."
🪲During a difficult time, it is common for him to send a little friend for you. You look up from chores, work, studying, or something, to see a lady bug or jewel beatle just off to the side, trying to get a message across. It's running its little legs off attempting to make a legible and understandable shape, a heart.
🪲He is also the kind of man who likes to have schedules, rituals, or actions to fall back on when things are tense. Like giving you butterfly kisses when he is ready to leave for work, greeting you when he arrives home, he will do both again should he have to run back in even if he is in a hurry and has only been gone a minute. He likes the act of grabbing your face, warm palms against your cheeks and laying a kiss between you eyebrows, over your eyes on the side of your nose as he nuzzles in, and finally one or two pecks on your lips. On days when he is especially sentimental he will wait for you to open your eyes once he is finished, hands still holding your face close to his. He finds comfort in it everytime and will turn around again if he forgets either one. He hopes it gets a message across to you aswell, his way of saying, "I'm happy your here and I'm glad I am here with you."
🪲Other rituals are passed down by his clan, bugish or insecty things that he considers precious pieces of his culture. Humming into your neck when the two of you are in each other's arms; a way to mimic a mating call or a signal to others that you are his and he yours. Taking off his glasses in the dark of your bedroom every night. He pulls you close, needing to hide his eyes from the sunlight that will eventually shine through the windows come morning. If he is the big spoon he will burrow down into the pillows. His forehead flush with the back of your neck, his breath warming the spot between your shoulders. If he is the little spoon he will lay his hand over yours and lace your fingers together then place them over his eyes and will hold them there as a shield come morning.
🪲another bugish/insecty quirk he introduced you to, a 'clan ritual' he called a "Night to Morning Metamorphosis." If you tell him you've made a mistake, are unhappy with yourself, your actions or reactions to something, he bring this to the table. He is a big advocate for 'you can try again tomorrow, the only failure is giving up.' and to prove his point, he will gladly take your hands into his and tell you about the life cycle of a butterfly. He will suggest that you, come morning will emerge a butterfly yourself. Stronger, more beautiful, and capable.
🐛"How do you know that I can be better? What if this is my limit, what if this is the best I can do?" he responds to your heart breaking confession with, "Why? Because, no Caterpillars hatch knowing that they are a butterfly. They only know only know themselves to be chunky little larva worms" He chuckles at your reaction to 'chunky little larva worms', "then one day they will find their value, and begin to work towards who they want to be, building a chrysalis. Then they emerge with new skills, beauty, and purpose. You're in the chrysalis phase now and I can't wait to see who you will become tomorrow."
🐛He is carefull, dressing you in one of his big, relaxed shirts, light fluffy socks(he plants a kiss on your ankle), wraps you in a fluffy blanket and then the duvet, then finally his arms. When you resemble a slug, worm, and caterpillar he will lay beside you and hold you close. Should you feel self conscious or doubtful he tells you what he like about you, the traits he loves.
🦋"I can't believe that you can become even more beautiful, and yet I know it will happen because I had the same thought yesterday and every day before that, and you proved me wrong every time, my butterfly." Come morning when you emerge from you chrysalis he acts whole heartedly like there's been a transformation. Lots of, "Oh, look at you"s and, "I told you so"s.
🦋Once you bring it up to his father or other relative, they deny having ever heard of such a custom. Turns out he made it up completely, and thought it up on the spot- when he found you so distressed that first time.
