the thing about tumblr in 2016 is that everyone went through a phase of saying 'x character/thing is x sexuality!' as a cute little meme and someone made a 'the moon is asexual' post and people lost their absolute shit because someone else had already posted 'the moon is a lesbian' and therefore to call the moon ace was lesbian erasure and proof that all asexuals are lesbophobic and people spent actual hours of their lives writing callout posts and linking sources to say that historically, the moon actually is a lesbian and therefore the original post wasn't part of the meme but actually a reference to all these cultures that saw the moon as a lesbian. the phrase 'asexuals stealing the moon' was used and this was all just par for the course because tumblr fucking hated asexuals

Nobody owns the moon, but NASA paid this private agency $108 million for this mission, and tribal members pay federal income tax. US Christians would probably be annoyed if the US government used their tax dollars to fund private companies rocketing other people's remains into historic cathedrals.

Also whether or not the moon has any religious significance to you, it's just kind of tacky, but 'this is tacky and maybe we shouldn't do everything just because someone can make a profit off of it' is not an argument American corporations and agencies typically listen to. A sovereign government making a religious complaint... it didn't work, but it at least got a meeting with the president. It's possible they made the objection because they realized they were one of the groups that could.
