My hot take about what they should do in the Mighty Nein animated series
They should reveal Essek is working with the Assembly AS SOON AS WE MEET HIM.
Hear me out. Everyone in the fandom knows it’s coming and everyone not in the fandom will get spoiled immediately, so just cut out the middle man.
Personally I knew the Essek twist when I saw campaign 2 and the best part of that arc was paying attention to Essek’s actions and slowly watching him fall in love with the Nein (and Caleb) while having the identity/moral crisis of the century.
Just picture it:
The Nein arrive at the dynasty and hand over the beacon, they meet the elegant and intimidating Shadow Hand and invite him over for dinner.
Next scene Essek is in a dark room talking to Ludinus who tells him that the Nein could ruin everything. Then in dramatic lighting Essek is like “Do not concern yourself Ludinus, I’ll deal with our guests”. Episode ends.
Throughout the show we can sporadically cut to him doing evil stuff and sabotaging the Nein in small ways.
Then next season we see Essek learning small talk, working on spells with Caleb, blushing at inappropriate comments from party and just having a real family for the first time.
Then in camera we can see the exact moment when he realizes “Oh shit, I love those idiots… OH SHIT I LOVE THAT WIZARD”
He then has a beauty and the beast like freak out in his laboratory and destroys it with graviturgy. It would be awesome.
There are so many moments that I'm anticipating for the Mighty Nein animated series. There are so many moments.
But one that consistently sticks with me is the moment with Fjord at the Kiln.
The scene is already plenty cinematic on its own. You can imagine volcanic underlighting. You can imagine the peaceful quiet of the night. Fjord, alone, sword in hand, is finally done. He challenges his patron and holds his pact blade against his chest.
But we can do a little more with this.
Because the funny thing about that moment is that every time Fjord would have a nasty dream and sneak out during C2, Matt would have Travis roll a stealth check. If only to see if he could make it out without being noticed. Sometimes his rolls weren't great.
But the night at the Kiln, Travis rolled a natural twenty on stealth. That's cool, except in hindsight. I hadn't realized until a re-watch, but because of that natural twenty-
Well, because of that, if Fjord had done enough damage to go unconscious beside the volcano, no one would've known.
Crazy, huh?
.....We can use that.
Have Fjord at the volcano.
Take a second where he's just standing there: considering the blade.
Then, he brings it up to his chest, delivers his ultimatum and waits for an answer. We cut to the Nein sleeping, huddled together. We cut to the Dust family, also sleeping. Spend a few more moments with Fjord, where nothing happens.
Then he steps forward and drives the blade into his chest. Give the audience a second to process.
Cut back to those who are sleeping.
Fjord drives the blade deeper in and takes another step forward.
Cut to the sleeping Nein.
Cut to one more step, one more push, a soft wind that eases the pain, and then the final throw.
Draw the scene out. Add to the anxiety of the moment by cutting back and forth. Have all of this go on while reminding the audience that the rest of the Nein have no way to know or intervene if things get bad.
Let's get the newbies screaming at the screen for everybody to wake up and keep Fjord from killing himself.
MIGHTY NEIN ANIMATED SERIES PREDICTIONS AND SCREAMING (I'm inconsolable right now bear with me)
First season will end when Molly does, so we'll get that whole arc and maybe the rescue with Caduceus as well? But perhaps a cliffhanger ending
Beau & Keg!
Yasha alone quests may be more fleshed out like with Pike?
KIRI
SHAKASTE?
The "he's my boy" Nott speech and the Caleb vs Everyone tension of the first arc? Delicious
I didn't think we would reach Essek in the first season because he makes his appearance later in the campaign BUT he was in the trailer so maybe he will be incorporated earlier?
MATTHEW MERCER WILL VOICE ESSEK (please please please)
Animated Jester Sendings! I want to see the looks on their faces when she asks if they're pooping
Also hidden dicks on every frame that jester is in? Not even her necessarily drawing them but like little easter eggs if you pause at the right moment
Actually I do think it would be Funny if Caleb and Beau are having their angsty conversations and there's just a little Jester in the background drawing a dick
Fjord's dreams in animation are going to be INSANE I can't wait
I feel bad already for whoever has to animate Molly's coat but I will be screaming, crying and throwing up when I see it for the first time
The opening tavern scene animated has been my one hope and wish since the moment I watched the first episode and I probably will cry when I see it again
Caleb mudwizard Widogast with his bread hands
Caleb unresolved trauma Widogast lighting up their enemies and then going catatonic
(are we going to get Percy style flashbacks of his time under Ickythong? 👀)
The forehead kiss Molly and Caleb that will later re-ermege in the forehead kiss Caleb and Essek (in a later season)
We're gonna get Dope Monk Shit ANIMATED I could cry, Beau is peak character design and Marisha is peak storytelling with her fight scenes, they're gonna be so good
NOTT THE BRAVE! NOTT THE BRAVE! NOTT THE BRAVE!
Nott trying to steal the reccomendation letter from Fjord and being caught by Molly is one of my favourite scenes from Cr2 I'm going feral
I just remembered that it'll likely end with Molly and now I'm scared, that's going to be heartbreaking when animated, I got choked up the first time I saw his coat swinging in the wind in the animated intro
I just have a lot of feelings about this announcement if you couldn't already tell
Gods, I hope Matt voices Essek. Like ik if they took the same route as Gilmore they would definitely cast an actor that would be phenomenal at portraying Essek, but by the gods, I hope Matt plays Essek.
I need the delicious sexual tension between the wizards that Matt Mercer and Liam O'Brien are so good at producing.
