MPW Ep 2 Subtitle Corrections
Subtitle Corrections: Ep 1 here
Cultural/Language Tidbits: Ep 2 here
Same translation disclaimer applies. Thanks to everyone reading the first post and geeking out with me in the notes, I really appreciate it XD Ok, Ep 2, let's go! Sorry in advance for the length!
Tumblr media
If you're wondering why Yoh's freaking out about the rainy season even though they've been together for 3 years, the manga artist posted a clarification on twitter:
By the way, “it’s been 3 years since then” – that phrase refers to it being 3 years since that conversation regarding the slave contract. As for living together, they’ve only just started (to do so) around Mar/April*, so (at this point) it’s only been a few months (for them). What if (I) got it wrong…. I remember making a note of it, but the file that I wrote it in and passed over (to the crew) couldn’t be found right, so… (was it) a dream?” *Japan's rainy season comes around June/July, so this means that this is the first rainy season these two have been experienced together.
Tumblr media
[Y: まずっ] Y: Tastes bad In case the original "that sucks" sounds like Yoh might be talking about the news of the young forecaster - he's really just talking about the food here.
Tumblr media
[S: 遅くなるからいらねぇっつっただろう] Original: I told you not to bother since I returned late Mine: I told you I wouldn't need it cause I'd be late right? This is actually a pretty harsh sounding line tbh. It's sort of inkeeping with Segasaki's curtness, but still pretty harsh - so this tells us he's tired after a long day, and explains the frown on his face that Yoh just wipes away with his cuteness
Tumblr media
Nikujaga literally means meat and potatoes. It's a stewed dish and a very well-loved comfort food. Super easy to make too (link goes to an easy to follow recipe, and the site also explains a little about the dish).
Tumblr media
[Y: 本当、顔だけはいいよな] Y: Really, it's only his face that looks good.
Tumblr media
I've talked about this in my cultural/language tidbits for this episode (linked up top) but I'll add it here for completion's sake
[Y: あ、いや。なんでもない…です*] (Ah, iya, nandemonai…desu*) Y: Ah, no, it's….nothing* Yoh let's his sentence trail off before tacking on a "desu" at the end. "Desu" is an ending verb characteristic of "polite" speech, which Yoh doesn't use frequently with Segasaki (in fact, by this point, he has not used polite speech with Segasaki at all, except for maybe saying the full form of the word "welcome home", and even that's pushing it). Here he adds it at the end as an afterthought (the polite form of "iya" would be "iie", if he had wanted the whole sentence to be polite from the get go), which tells us that Yoh's feeling a little off-kilter here, and does introduce the slightest distance between him and Segasaki. We'll see this distance increase as the episode goes on.
Tumblr media
[Y: いや、どう考えても食べ過ぎだろう] Y: No but, no matter which way you look at it, (he's) eaten way too much hasn't he? Btw, if your hair started standing at the spoon scraping the pot - in the manga artist's post about visiting the shooting venue (as well as during Ep 1 twitter space) it was mentioned that Mashiko, the actor, can actually cook, so during filming they had to tell him what someone who can't would likely do, and also asked him to do the housework poorly (because Yoh's not supposed to be good at cooking or housework hahaha)
Tumblr media
この人*、明日も朝早いんだよな。たぶん。 Original: This guy, has an early morning again tomorrow. Probably. Mine: This person*, has (to leave) early tomorrow morning too. Probably. *The word here is "kono hito", literally "this person". There's actually nothing wrong with the translation "this guy" tbh because that's a fairly neutral term in English, but I'm highlighting it here because in his monologues, Yoh usually refers to Segasaki using much rougher language, such as "koitsu, aitsu", except when he addresses Segasaki directly in his head. I'll talk more about how Yoh addresses Segasaki in the analysis post, but for now - this sentence hints that Yoh has clocked Segasaki's tiredness (subconsciously or not) and is feeling a little bad for him. Then again he quickly hides that by adding on "probably". (Adding the word "probably" behind your sentence is a common way to express doubt/negate what you just said, and incidentally is commonly used by comedians to deliver a punchline).
Tumblr media
[Y: あの*…あの…寝るなら部屋でとおもって。] Original: Um… Hey… You should go back to your room. Mine: Um*... Um... if you're going to sleep then, (it would be better to sleep) in your room - at least that's what I thought...
*"あの…" (ano…), translated as "um" here, is a common sound you use when you want to get someone's attention but don't want to sound too demanding - it actually isn't being polite per se, but it does show the hesitancy with which Yoh approaches him. Contrast this with the way Segasaki gets Yoh's attention (so far it's just been "Yoh" or "Oi" - the latter of which you would NOT use unless you were close to the person, or looking for a fight).
As a general rule of thumb, the level of politeness in Japanese is directly correlated with the length of the sentence and just how far you can beat around the bush. So, Yoh's suggestion that Segasaki goes to sleep in his room is literally just "if sleeping, then room..." and everything else in that translation is assumed. He may not being using polite speech forms here (that would be "to omoimashita" instead of "to omotte") but this is still a common way to be polite because he's making a suggestion that is so mild Segasaki can choose to ignore it. This is a great example of Brown & Levinson's "negative politeness" which we'll revisit when analysing their speech patterns, and which you can read about in entirely too much detail here (free to read).
Tumblr media
[Y: じゅあ、俺は寝るので** あの、その、そういうことで、おやすみ] Original: Then, I’ll go to sleep. That…sort of thing. Good night. Mine: So then, I'm going to bed, therefore**... Um... that... with that... night!
"Therefore" is an awkward translation for the word ので (node), which is more often translated as "so". I've chosen to use that word because "node", whilst again not a polite form per se, is less colloquial than the more commonly used "から(kara)", to mean the same thing. It tends to pop up more in writing than in speech. "Therefore" doesn't make a sentence polite/formal in English, but it's definitely less colloquial than using the word "so". The use of "node" is just that tiny bit out of place in this sentence paired with the informal pronoun "ore" for "I" as opposed to the more formal choice of "boku".
Tumblr media
Again, Yoh answers Segasaki properly here with a "はい (hai)" as opposed to his usual "un" (which is a sound that expresses agreement), when told that Segasaki will be late again. There actually aren't very many moments where Yoh does speak politely to Segasaki (he's definitely rude when he talks about Segasaki in his head hahaha), so these moments stand out. This whole short exchange, together with the random -desu he added earlier, just make Yoh's sentences a little more stilted/awkward, and more distant. Individually they don't deserve much mention at all, but together, and in the context of his jealousy, show just how unsure Yoh is about where he stands with Segasaki.
Tumblr media
[Y: あの人の帰宅が遅くなり] Y: That person returned home later and later
"That person" - similar to the above usage of "this person". This sentence is incomplete - the verb form of the last word - 遅くなり (osokunari) indicates that there should be a second part to the sentence (the "completed" form would be osokunatta). But after he says this, there is a pregnant pause, as Yoh puts his phone down and continues cooking alone. The pause continues all the way into the next scene, before the sentence continues, highlighting the loneliness that Yoh feels.
Tumblr media
[Y: 当然、触れられることもないままに] Original: Of course, he did not touch me at all Mine: (and) of course, (I) remained untouched (by him) as well
The literal translation for this would be "(the situation in which I) was not touched (by him) continued on as well". Yoh uses the passive form of the word "touch", which places the emphasis on Yoh "receiving" the action of being touched as opposed to placing the emphasis on Segasaki "carrying out" the action of touching Yoh. Consider the difference between the sentences "I was hurt by him" and "he hurt me". The former is the passive form, and is super common in Jp, much less common in Eng. If this is confusing - welcome to Jp grammar just know that the emphasis of this line is more on what Yoh does not have, rather than what Segasaki has not done. It accentuates Yoh's feelings of emptiness and loss.
Tumblr media
Y: すっかり日々は過ぎて Y: The days pass by completely ...
Similarly, this sentence is "incomplete", and is instead continued by Segasaki walking in and telling Yoh he'll be late again. (This whole bit just hurts my soul tbh, Yoh is so lonely. )
Tumblr media
This is a teruteru bouzu aka a charm of sorts for good weather. See the cultural tidbits post for Ep 2 linked up top for more info!
Tumblr media
This is said really strongly, and gives the "what the hell are you doing" feel. Yoh's truly upset here.
Tumblr media
I try not to care about some of the subs in these side conversations because they don't add much to the main story and these posts are already too long, but this sentence should really be "Dammit, maybe I should (go) troll the chat" (and the previous sentence should be "If this was broadcasted in a certain country it would be instant death" aka N.Korea ^^;) and I just think it was a nice touch to hint at the fandom wars/flaming that goes on between fans hahaha
Tumblr media
[Y: しんどい] Y: This is too draining The word here used is "shindoi", which is a term used when you're feeling mentally/physically exhausted/drained, and carries a sense of frustration (at feeling this way) and sometimes (emotional) pain.
Tumblr media
This. Is. Huge. Segasaki does 2 things here - one, he rejects an after-work meal, which you rarely do because Japan is all about the group and rejecting a group invite, to welcome a new member, can make you seem like you aren't a team player - two, the guy who invites him is his senior, which you can tell because Segasaki sticks to polite speech forms whilst the other guy does not. It's still relatively casual, so you can tell he's got a good working relationship with them (probably why he's not worried about rejecting them) but still. In Segasaki's world, Yoh is the No. 1 priority.
Tumblr media
This is more accurately "WTF". There are many sounds in Japanese that aren't exactly words, but carry a lot of meaning - "Haa?!" is one of them, and is a very rude way to express a lot of anger and shock. Please, never say this in real life. You will royally piss off whoever it's directed at and if you are outside a Shibuya bar you will get punched.
Tumblr media
The word used here is てめぇ (temee), which is a really rude way to say "you", and has the same energy as "you bastard". Segasaki usually uses the informal pronoun "omae" for "you" when he talks to Yoh, he's definitely pissed off here.
Tumblr media
This is the same word, "shindoi" again.
I'm going to put the rest of the whole argument here with just my translation because it's too long to screencap the whole thing.
Breakdown: S: What's up with this? This lewd disaster of a scene Y: (You're) annoying! ["うるさい (urusai)" is often translated as "shut up", but it literally means someone is being "noisy", and here is more of a complaint that Segasaki is being bothersome] Y: I'm going to become a hot-selling erotica manga artist! [the word used here is 売れっ子 (urekko), which literally means "someone who gets huge sales" and mostly refers to idols, entertainers, TV personalities etc. So Yoh is not just saying he's going to become popular, he's saying he's gonna be like a celebrity manga artist, which is why Segasaki snorts a little at this] S: What's with that? Hey. *takes away beer can* Y: The hot sellers say that if you jerk off whilst drawing your storyboard, you'll come up with good stuff [urekko-san is a pretty cute way of referring to these popular artists] S: You've not drawn anything, you know? [this is said with a really indulgent air, which contrasts directly with the more authoritative tone of the next line] S: Hey, I'm telling you no more *grabs beer can* S: You drank too much. You just shot what you shot and then went to sleep didn't you? [And this is back to an indulgent tone - also, everyone knows Segasaki is talking about cumming here, he just doesn't actually say it so directly] Y: Shut up! ["黙れ (damare) - contrast with "urusai" earlier. The former is used much less commonly and really does mean to "be quiet". This is why Segasaki pauses and looks at Yoh. Up until now Segasaki just thinks Yoh's gotten drunk and is whining cutely, but this word means things are serious.] Y: I'm going to draw manga that is erotic, that you can wank off to, and then earn lots of money [this is a call back to the conversation with Man-san over the phone in Ep 1, which I did not include earlier because I didn't think it was important to the story when Yoh says "the work that was released last month was amazing! There was a big buzz around the topic "I can't wank off (to this)" - Yoh was being sarcastic here, meaning that he got reviews that his work wasn't erotic enough] Y: and leave this sort of place soon! S: What? Hey - what (the hell) are you thinking? [Again, "haa?" here shows he does NOT like what Yoh's saying, but he does soften the end of the sentence with a "yo"] Y: I'm not thinking of anything! Y: Embracing me so easily - don't think you can (keep on) doing that [again, this is the passive form, so the emphasis is on Yoh being embraced, and here has the nuance of "don't think I'll just (keep on) being fine with being embraced (by you) like it's some sort of norm"] Y: when you don't even like me [this line has quite a bit of bitterness in it - the emphasis here is strongly on Segasaki and his apparent "non-liking" of Yoh my english is dying.] Y: You think of me as just a convenient slave, don't you? Y: If you want to do it that much, go do it with that forecaster next to you! S: You... from the start... what have (you been saying?) Y: I have never been smiled at like that before [again, this is in passive voice]
It's obvious from the acting alone that this entire argument is pretty emotionally charged - this is also reflected in the language because Yoh uses the pronoun "ore (I)" a lot. Pronouns are frequently dropped in Japanese - often you can go an entire conversation without ever uttering the words "I/me" or "you", in part because the pronouns are assumed and also because emphasis on an individual can come across as too selfish/narcissistic or direct. Segasaki uses them often enough with Yoh, which fits his personality, but Yoh normally doesn't. So, when he uses "ore" here it stands out - his plans to be successful and leave, his feelings, his interpretation of Segasaki's actions - all of the emphasis is on his own self. The message is very clear - Yoh is hurting a lot more than he is blaming or accusing Segasaki.
Tumblr media
[Y: もう疲れた。あんたといると疲れる。嫌いだ S: お前 酒入るとめちゃくちゃしゃべるんだな Y: ねぇ、何で雨の時はだめなの? S: はあ? だって、お前が言ったんだろう] Y: (I'm) tired out. When (I'm) with you, (I) get tired. Hate it. [We've lost the "I" pronouns here, because the emphasis is on the extreme sense of physical and emotional fatigue as opposed to Yoh himself, and on how much he dislikes that feeling. Of note, "hate" here is closer to "detest/really dislike" - the word is "kirai" - which is not as strong as the word "nikui" which we talked about in Ep 1 when Yoh said he hated the part of him that always listened to Segasaki. Also, this is the first time Yoh has addressed Segasaki with the pronoun "you" out loud - he uses "あんた anta", which he also used in his head in Ep 1, after they did it. Again, we'll talk about this in the analysis post in the future, but for now just know that this term is usually used between older couples.] S: You... once you start drinking you really start talking huh? [literally, you "become able to talk"] Y: Hey...why is it when it rains, (we) can't do it? S: What? Because, you said so didn't you? [the last "haa?" from Segasaki! This time expressing his surprise and slight indignation.]
Tumblr media
[S: 俺は優しいんだ] S: I. am. Kind. Great example of Segasaki's use of the "ore" pronoun here to quite literally emphasise how great he is. "優しい (kind)" in Japanese carries the connotation of being thoughtful, anticipating the other person's needs and wants and then meeting them etc. It's a characteristic that people often say they look for in their potential partners.
Tumblr media
[S: そもそも、なんだ先の言いぐさは 好きじゃないだの 出ていきたいだの お前 俺のプロポーズを受けといてよくそんなことが言えんな S: 養ってやる*っつってんだ プロポーズ以外になに] S: In the first place, what was with those things you said earlier? That you don't like me, that you want to leave... You... that was rich, saying all that after accepting my proposal. S: I was saying I'd provide and care* for you. If that's not a proposal than what is? ["養ってやる" is a pretty possessive way to say I'll provide for you - it's the same word used when referring to parent providing for a child, or an owner providing for a small animal. It's not rude per se, but it does imply a power imbalance. Segasaki actually sort of has a point here because... this is not something you say to someone else unless you're in a relationship ^^;]
Tumblr media
S: ていうかお前、俺のこと嫌いなんだ S: どうなの S: Actually about that... so you hate me huh? S: Which is it?
Tumblr media
S: ふーん。あ、そ S: Ohh..? I see. ふーん (Ohh..?) - Segasaki says this a lot, especially in this episode. This is another one of those sounds that isn't a word but carries a lot of meaning. It has a dismissive sort of tone to it, like you've already assumed something or when you're pretty nonchalant/not impressed about whatever the other person has said and are just playing along with them by giving them some attention (so again, if you use it wrongly, it can piss people off). Segasaki uses it whenever Yoh goes mute or shy, as a way to tease Yoh - though Yoh seems to think Segasaki is dismissing/not interested in his answer. あ、そ (A, so) - again, Segasaki says this a lot - can be interpreted as "oh really?/I see/is that so?" - Combined with the above, you can see why Yoh often thinks Segasaki isn't interested in his answer, and even when he does recognise it as teasing, he gets too flustered to do anything about it.
This seems to have gotten longer, if you reached the end - congratulations! I hope this makes it a little clearer why it's so obvious to us as the viewer that Segasaki is really quite patient with Yoh, and is waiting for him to come to terms with his feelings, but at the same time so confusing for Yoh, because of the way many of these interactions can be read both ways. In Ep 3, we'll really be able to get into their dynamics because they've got so much more interaction together.

Oh, im so sorry! i didnt know you're unable to open links.
this is what ana's posts (the one that was linked) says (its about the xenophobia btw)
"also i will fall on my sword and try to clarify things that can be lost in translation and can just be simple misspeaking:
no one is upset that quackity made statements in spanish. we're upset that he made no private statement, and his public ones were at inaccessible times for the workers affected, in a language the majority do not understand, and that he has no subtitles / the translation website wasn't fucking working.
speaking in spanish = obviously okay
speaking in spanish without subtitles when saying nothing to his workforce / said workforce having to tune in to twitch.tv in the middle of the night to find out their employment status = not okay"
"Inaccessible time for the workers affected" so only the french ones? Bc the first statement was in english and it was almost as quick as Quackity could make and it was late to EVERYONE. Then the others that he got better understanding about whats going on he spoke in spanish bc he didn't want to be misunderstood and wanted all info to come from him. It was a shot in his feet?? Yes it was. But he doesn't owe anyone to speak in english, that's the truth
Also, coming here and saying "It wasn't xenophobia, Lea and Lumi didn't mean to 🥺🥺" to a latino that read over and over thinking ey were going insane and reading too much between the lines until others agreeded that it was fucking xenophobic and then speaking about it just to be shut off bc "im lost in translation" is really bold

Rammstein in Amerika - Richard's accident at Teotihuacan
for @zharptitsa11-blog from the Rammstein in Amerika documentary (abt 1h18) the link is only in German i think, there's bound to be one with english subtitles somewhere; post on topic 'Richard has the odd accident now and then' (but also...is very likely a lot less fond of pain than some of his bandmates 😉)
Rammstein were touring Mexico (i think in 1999) and visited the ruines of Teotihuacan together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
by the way: Flake not really in the tourist-mood outfit-wise 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
well, as they were getting down, Richard fell the last 3 meters down and sprained his leg
Tumblr media
Schneider: "How did that happen, did you want to jump onto something or down or..?"
Richard: "I wanted to get down, I just fell.."
Tumblr media
and because they were in the middle of the tour and he had to play, he got injections against the pain
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Btw: love that documentary, especially how the 6 of them just sit on the couches and ask eachother stuff too... there really should be another one like this of everything that happened in recent years 😊

since you're Italian, would you explain to me what this is: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t3al1PBx09A&pp=ygUQcXVvIHZhZG8gdHJhaWxlcg%3D%3D
I died when he started praying to our flag😭💀 Jesus-🇳🇴🙏🏼😂 (as a norwegian I find this hilarious but I just want to know what the hell is going on, what is the plot??)
Here’s the link btw for those curious- it has English subtitles
😭😭 Ahh Checco Zalone
“Quo Vado?” Is a comedic/satirical film about a Southern Italian guy who has a “posto fisso” (secure position) job- basically working in the public sector- and is desperate to keep his job after a new government tries to downsize bureaucracy. A woman who works for the new government is desperately trying to get Checco to accept a buyout so he can quit, but he refuses because he wants the stability and benefits that are guaranteed to him even if he does fuck-all at work. So she sends him off to worse and worse job postings to get him to quit, but he refuses to back down. She eventually boots him to the arctic (where the 🇳🇴 bit happens), and he almost quits until he falls in love with an Italian researcher there. They do end up in Norway for a bit, but that’s as far as I’ll go with describing the synopsis, but I hope that explains enough shvbdhc
If you’re interested in watching it I’m sure you can find a version with English subs somewhere :o

House of the Dragon: 1x03
Today is a new day and I feel much better after rewatching episode 3 with English subtitles (thanks God). Here my true review.
We met Prince Drahar, but we never learned anything about him, besides that he has greyscale. That’s a shame, because he is wearing the broken mask of the son of the harpy and they called him Prince at the beginning of the episode. So at the end, I was wondering if he was literally mute.
I like the contrast between the guy asking for help to Prince Daemon, but he is instantly killed by Caraxes. War is messy and there are collateral damages every times. In addition, I liked the link that riders and dragons shares, especially when Daemon was injured by an arrow.
And yes, three years have passed, baby Aegon is two years old, Rhaenyra is seventeen and Alicent is pregnant for the second time.
It was interesting to witness the relationship between Otto and his brother who is influencing him, and then Otto is influencing his daughter. A vicious cercle. Also, did you notice that Otto is wearing more or less the same necklace as the Maester?
Viserys is so bad for making good decisions. Instead he doesn’t want to make any. As the show goes on, he is getting worse by the minute, drunk, tired, confused, weak. Viserys is not true dragon as he is not a dragon rider. The Targaryens are too different from the others, and too alone when they are separated.
The song about “The dragon eyes” was too much alike the one from Dandelion’ song “Toss a coin for your witcher”, can it be related to the Island of faces where they are some weirwood trees?
Even if I have read Fire and Blood and became quite angry towards some characters, I find that Alicent is well written. They gave her some stature that she hasn’t in the book, because she is trying to make peace between her and Rhaenyra, and between Viserys and Rhaenyra, even if there is some tension still. I noticed, also, that she likes to watch everything and listen to everyone.  Btw, I love her hairstyle.
In this episode, Rhaenyra was so alone, angry and separated against everyone at court, which is strange because in the book she is described as the Realm’s delight (and of course, she has Daemon). On the other hand, she is seventeen and she should be married at this point.
I liked the contrast between the royal hunt and the war of the Stepstones.
Furthermore, they mentioned Lady Swann who is The future Black Swann of Lys. They have also shown us a lot of peacock in relation of House Serrett of Silverhill, which means that they are more in the Westerlands. And yes, Ser Larys Strong, known as clubfoot, has a deformity with his food and he will become the master of whispers in the small council, as he likes to listen without speaking. Lady Redwyne had a lots of opinions. On the other hand, Jason Lannister made me think a lot about Jaime Lannister, with his pride.
Question: Where was Syrax? How is it possible for Rhaenyra to leave King’s Landing without her dragon?
Please don’t hate me, but I really liked Rhaenyra and Ser Cole dynamic, even if we are going to hate him after, but here he was nice to Rhaenyra. Consequently something truly horrible must happen between them in order to hate her so much and switch side. Also, did you notice the foreshadowing with his sword?
It seems that only Lyonel Strong can give well-though advice to Viserys. His proposition for Rhaenyra to wed Ser Laenor is quite true.
Strange I didn’t know that a boar could be that strong and throw Ser Cole over several meters, and, of course, not kill Rhaenyra. But I liked the scene where Rhaenyra saw the white Hart, without killing it. Btw, can they dye her eyebrows please.
I liked Harwin Strong’s glance toward Rhaenyra at the end of the hunt (foreshadowing?).
As for the tapiserie in Alicent’s bed chamber was hilarious, especially when she was talking to her father. Can we notice that Alicent and Viserys are not sleeping in the same bedroom.
In the book, Veamond Valeryon is the nephew of Corlys, but I don’t know why they change him for his brother. Also, why Rhaenys was missing from the battle? She is a warrior too.
I think that everyone notice that two fingers are missing from Viserys’ hand now.
Can someone tell me where is Dwarfstone?
Finally we see Rhaenyra wearing a new dress and she sat on the Hand’s chair.
I really liked Laenor Valeryon. He is quite alike Rhaenyra. Unfortunately for her, he likes boys. What a shame when you think about it for the future story.
Also, I really liked the crab exiting the mouth of the skeleton when Daemon goes to his death. The battle scene was not believable at all. Where is Caraxes? How Daemon could have dodged so many arrows and continue fighting while he had three inside him is beyond me. In addition, I don’t see the difference between a Valyrian sword and a normal one. But at least, we got the pleasure of seeing Seasmoke for the first time. Another thing that didn’t make sense was Daemon touching Drahar knowing that he had greyscale. So now greyscale is not contagious?
Last thing: RIP Legolas’ wig.

Smiley also knew, or thought he knew - the idea came to him now as a mild enlightenment - that Bill in turn was also very little by himself: that while his admirers - Bland, Prideaux, Alleline, Esterhase, and all the rest of the supporters' club - might find in him completeness, Bill's real trick was to use them, to live through them to complete himself; here a piece, there a piece, from their passive identities: thus disguising the fact that he was less, far less, than the sum of his apparent qualities… and finally submerging this dependence beneath an artist's arrogance, calling them the creatures of his mind…
this passage from tinker, tailor, soldier, spy is what i think of every time anyone tries to put me on a pedestal as Tumblr User Autisticandroids. like genuinely my main skill is making connections with other people and essentially propping myself up through them, though of course i don't really do it on purpose.
anyway unfortunately my taste in media isn't going to contain what you want i don't think. i'm going to give you an extremely random list of things i like. not favorites, but just stuff i enjoy.
my favorite episode of star trek: the next generation is season six episode fourteen "face of the enemy," but if you're going to actually get involved with star trek i would recommend deep space nine instead. when i want to alienate people i put on an episode of the prisoner (1967) because i love that show but it's deeply unenjoyable. i unironically think kill la kill is a great anime. the private life of plants is probably the tv series i've seen the most times.
talking to you, talking to me by the watson twins is underappreciated and contains some of my favorite pieces of music. however, the only thing i've listened to lately is the rise and fall of ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars by david bowie because it's a castiel thesis to me.
passing by nella larsen is one of my favorite books ever, and when i first read it i had this free online version where you could actually turn the pages, i think it was this version. i think speaker for the dead is wildly underrated but feel vaguely guilty about recommending orson scott card. a bad book that has brought me a lot of joy lately is absolute friends by john le carre. as a kid i really like the underland chronicles by suzanne collins. a while ago i read the three body trilogy by liu cixin and while the second one dragged and was rather poorly translated, i enjoyed the first for its creativity, classic scifi feel, and understated spookiness, and i enjoyed the third for its dark camp and comparatively strongly drawn characters. even the second had acceptable elements, but mostly because i was tickled by the fact that it reminded me a little of the futurological congress by stanislaw lem.
i just finished relistening to the white vault, a horror podcast which i like a lot but am more ambivalent about now that i know the ending (it wasn't finished the first time i listened). if you hate horror, my favorite non-fiction podcast is you're wrong about.
my favorite source for horror short stories is the scp foundation, and here are some faves.
my favorite movie is alice (1988) dir. jan svankmajer, which is an adaptation of alice in wonderland. it's very much a childhood nostalgia watch for me, unbelievable as that might seem. here's a link, but this version is in czech with english subtitles, so you might have to scout around if you want the english version. not that this movie has much dialogue. a rather eclectic selection of other movies i've liked that i just thought of in the last ten minutes is bride of re-animator (1989), x-men (2000), d.e.b.s. (2004), mirrormask (2005), isolation (2005), the host (2006), hard revenge millie (2009), black swan (2010), excision (2012), the handmaiden (2016), and swallow (2019). my movie taste is probably the closest you'll get in terms of media recs that you might enjoy based on my blog, since i hate movies and can only be tempted to watch them if they cater to me. but also big trigger warnings for some of those lmao.

hi hi pls help... french person who likes lastman... where may i find season 2?.. you seem to have watched it...
Hello there! If you understand french, you can watch all episodes for free on france.tv. But it seems it’s not accessible in every country, so that depends on where you are. Also if you can watch it on this website, I think because of the age ratings for this season, it’s only available at weird hours like between 10pm to 5am or something?
Also, if you don’t understand french, there’s no point in trying this website at all because they don’t have any subtitles other than french for Lastman.
A fellow Lastman fan on tumblr gave me a link to a google drive folder where we could download the episodes and the english subtitles, so if you dm me, I can send you the link as well. However, last time we checked, a few days ago, the last episode of season 2 wasn’t in the folder, so we still haven’t been able to watch that one :(
Anyway, good luck to you. I really wish Lastman was easier to watch/read online lol
Btw if anyone in the Lastman fandom sees this post and has a link for season 2 episode 6 with english subs, feel free to dm me, I’ll be eternally grateful.

Meet Cute Anniversary (Part 1)
*Edited (10.26.22): new example
(Right now my tl is being filled with clips of Jinkook moments in Memories of 2021 and as always offbeat, I'm making a post about their first meeting instead of fawning over these new interactions... let's get it)
Tumblr media
🤓
Bro I had no idea I'd be able to make a whole post centered around just one date:
June 4th 2011
~20110604~
Basically, when editing for fact checks and grammar I realized this post had turned into a compilation of Jk's obsession with 110604. Jin... he's obsessed with something else (part 2?). It got a bit long so I decided it'll be broken into parts.
So to summarize first, June 4th 2011 is the day Jinkook met each other.
Both of them have been pretty consistent with how they try to bring up this first meeting when talking about anything at all. Even if the topic is remotely related, here they go, here's their chance.
Part 1 is almost entirely centered around Jk's mention of the date. Like nothing else. Not the details of what happened on that day, just this date, these numbers.
There's an aspect of this that links up with how they present information on camera (camera awareness): one of them tends to 'claim' a thing special to the both of them as something individual, and the other half would remain quiet. More often so it's Jin who is quiet and Jk who claims it. (Oof, consistent with Jk's obsessive streak. "What's mine is mine. What's yours is mine.") Note that Jin isn't unaware whenever Jk brings it up. His reactions are always interesting.
Examples given below, Jk tends to fib a little about what the date means.
He usually gives a vague answer - it's the day he joined Bighit, or the day he joined BTS, or the day he joined the dorm. Tbh all these explanations are similar but it's interesting that he can't get his story straight for such an important date.
He's disproved his words over the years numerous times too.
Like during the behind-the-scenes for their Dope MV he held up the police baton and said the numbers [20110424] was probably the date he was cast, the day he joined BTS. Subsequently, a lot of armys trend #xyearswithjungkook every year on April 24th.
Another instance that disproves Jk's claims is during that chaotic JijinJung vlive. Jin was struggling to tell a 5 sec story of Jk mispronouncing an English word and in the midst of Jimin teasing Jin with selfcam mode, Jin and Jk were also arguing about the logistics of when they first met:
Tumblr media
According to Jin, it's the day Jk first went to the practice studio, and Jin had been there a couple days before. Meanwhile Jk believes they both went to the practice room on the same day, and threw in the tidbit he already signed the contract by then.
The specific day wasn't mentioned but Jk insisted that he and Jin went to the studio on the same day.
During their new year countdown for 2020, filmed in the morning in NYC, the guys were chatting randomly to pass time until the clock hits KST midnight and RM brought up how the 2010s were meaningful to him because he spend it all with BTS.
The three rappers started chatting about the topic and in the midst, Jk went o.o for a moment as he recalled something and stuttered as he tried to chime in 'Mine, mine was 2010...June...June 4'.
Tumblr media
Then RM reached out to ask Jk to repeat himself since they were speaking over each other just now. So Jk repeated June 4th and said he thinks he joined the company on June 4th.
Tumblr media
During Run BTS Ep 133, Jk mentioned that he arrived in Seoul in 2011.
Tumblr media
They may have filmed this episode around the beginning of Jan 2021 because Jin made a comment~ a new year has come. I rewatched a bit of the intro to see who prompted Jk to bring up June 4th and it was himself. Jhope, "it's 2021." Jk's mind: 2021 minus 10 years is 2011, 2011 is the year I came to Seoul... and btw [June 4th] y'all.
To that, Jin happily replied saying they were there together...
And the editors tied everything up with a ribbon in the subtitles [Met Jin on June 4, 10 years ago].
(which reminds me I have to do a post someday about BTS content editors. Those guys ship Jinkook way too hard. Esp. the BV editors.)
During 3J unit interview on You Quiz in March 2021:
Tumblr media
Again, what prompted him to mention June 4? Can't be exactly sure, there's cuts in the footage. But the interview topic atm was their dorm, where the host YJS mentioned Taehyung and Namjoon had brought up their dorm and then asked the trio how dorm life was like. Jhope went into explaining how they all used to live together and he was glad they have separate rooms now. Then YJS asked, 'how about you, Jungkook-shii' and the first thing he says is [see figure above].
Just broadly speaking, who remembers the day they move into a new place that clearly?
When they all got to choose their own 6 digit numbers for their Butter jacket 'mugshot':
Tumblr media
During their comeback vlive for Butter, Jk explained why he chose this number:
Tumblr media
The day he moved into the dorms, he says.
Ok. Twice he's brought June 4th up in relation to moving into the dorm. Maybe that's just it.
But here's what the officially released HipHop Monsters webtoon says:
Tumblr media
It's a day off: June 3, 2011. The difference isn't significant. Maybe he misremembered, that's all.
It's just that he's been 'misremembering' everything but 110604. Mountains will move and oceans will become deserts, but Jeon Jungkook will not stop mentioning June 4th 2011.
Jk will put down 110604 any chance he gets:
Tumblr media
*In the Seom game developer notes.
The most recent mention of the day without the date itself:
Tumblr media
He said 'the day' and 'that moment' which points to a pretty specific time and date.
I don't know if you've heard of this day, but I heard Jk mentions June 4th 2011 a lot.
The war flashbacks Jinkookers all get whenever 110604 comes up.
Also, look at Jin's proud little smile after Jk spoke. Cute af.
In conclusion, June 4th has been established as a very important day to Jk. Out of all 6 other members, only Jin has ever been associated with June 4 as well.
Could Jin be part of the reason why June 4th is so special to Jk?
(see title and beginning of post and Run BTS 133 for answer)

Hii how are you?
Have you seen this fan edited video?
https://twitter.com/mhsn_presents/status/1574035055907065863?t=2s3CcnIxV9SfEu2teovk3Q&s=19
I think that account is jaedo fan? Or just content creator about jaedo. But it well made I thought.
That link, one of my favorite btw. There's some other video too about jaedo editing in that account. And sub English in yt
If you haven't watching yet, I hope you like it. And give me some your review about it. Cuz, I watched many edit video, and I think it's one of the best edited videos I've ever seen. Because some provide English subtitles, while the other videos I watched were without subtitles, or were in Thai :))
Thank you
Have a nice day
Link The creator's YT channel.
I haven't seen this one, but my YT history tells me I came across the channel in the past.
I can't give an opinion on the linked video with Do "being" on a programme as it's not been subbed yet. But yes, OP is good at making a story and editing.
You can tell apart a beginner fan-editor and a one with some experience by the footage they use. A beginner has a small variety of popular in the fandom photoshoots or scenes from a tv-series, while the one with a bit more experience has a library of less known shots, adds sequences from films and stock shots, looks for scenes that match the story. Some make a story first, others choose a song and work around the lyrics and the mood.
The OP has room to grow, but I agree that the videos are one of the best for the ship.

Is Sonon really dead?
Yuffie’s mission in Midgar ended unsuccessfully. Shinra destroyed the base of her allies in Sector 7, she couldn’t get hold of the Ultimate Materia and, most importantly, Sonon died in order to save her.
His death gives a sense of closure to this newly introduced character. Although being quite short, the DLC is full of clever parallels between Yuffie and Melphie, Sonon's younger sister who got killed in front of his eyes during the Wutai war. He failed to save Melphie back then, but he can save Yuffie now.
But the big question is: is Sonon really dead?
The OST playing during the death scene is Seeing Melphie again. After getting stabbed, he has a vision of his little sister (a very touching moment tied to FFVII theme of reunion in the afterlife) accompanied by a bitterweet piano melody, that gets always softer until his last breath. But just when Nero seems to finish Sonon off, instead of mercilessly swallowing him into the darkness, he gently picks him up while the music digresses in an ominious and mysterious tone, hinting that his role may be not over yet.
Tumblr media
But what could Nero want from Sonon?
I think the answer may be deduced diggin a bit into Dirge of Cerberus lore.
There's a not very well known entry related to the main DoC game (especially by the western audience since it had been released only in Japan and for a very short period of time): Dirge of Cerberus Multiplayer on-line. While some of the missions were later included in the international release of DoC, the plot of this game got lost despite its importance for the full understanding of the Deepground dynamics.
Here is a link for an excellent article from thelifestream.net that tries to keep a record of this expired entry, and here's a playlist of cutscenes from the game with English subtitles that helps understanding the main plot (btw, a great YT channel where you can also find localized playthroughs of rarities like DoC Lost Episode and Before Crisis).
A quick summary about Deepground and the Multiplayer game.
Deepground is a top secret facility created by President Shinra and located beneath the slums (remember that underground lab where Cloud, Barret and Tifa went to save Wedge? That's Deepground) where troopers and SOLDIERs - but also unaware civilians - endure severe experimentations that push their bodies and minds to the limit, aiming to create ruthless SOLDIERs with no moral boundaries. The elite DG SOLDIERs are known as Tsviets, like Weiss, Nero, Argento, Shelke, Rosso and Azul. To avoid any rebellion each candidate and Tsviet has a restriction chip implanted in their brain controlled by four Restrictors loyal to President Shinra. This mechanism is particoularly useful to control those Tsviets who don't make a distinction between allies and enemies.
Because of this the Tsviets started to secretly plot against Shinra until they finally understood how to cheat the system. Shelke and Argento found a way to implant a non-working chip in a candidate, so that they could kill the Restrictors. The protagonist of DoC Multiplayer is indeed this candidate (gender and name chosen by the player). Thanks to her special abilities Shelke tricked the candidate into seeing a supporting partner, Usher, who helped them into ranking as a Tsviet, and most importantly she instilled the hatred towards the Restrictors giving to the candidate false memories of a little sister brutally killed by one of them. In the end the candidate managed to kill one of the Restrictors but got stabbed as well. This is the final dialogue of the game:
Weiss: Can this one still be of any use?
Shelke: Negative. The prolonged SND [Synaptic Net Dive] has rendered most of the brain inaccessible. It's only a matter of time before it breaks down completely.
Rosso: Really? After all that hard work. What a shame.
Weiss: Then hurry up and find a suitable replacement. After all no one knows what the Restrictors really look like.
Azul: So we have to find another one? This is becoming frustrating.
Weiss: It can't be helped. Only one out of hundreds can make it this far.
Rosso: Ordinary humans simply aren't as strong as we are.
Weiss: Precisely.
Shelke: Well, it's actually quite simple. With the help of the HJ Virus I am able to hack into Patricia [computer system] and bypass security. Then all that's needed is to pick a suitable subject before it's implanted with the chip.
Weiss: Shelke, find a new one quickly.
The devs had never provided any time reference for the Multiplayer story but now, with Intergrade, we know for sure that the Tsviets are still under Shinra's control when Yuffie and Sonon met Nero on December 12, and, while the President will be killed the next night, it seems clear that Scarlet is the one who will take full control of Deepground until her defeat the next month.
Conclusion
My theory is that Sonon could be the perfect person to replace the Tsviet-candidate and the dead Restrictor, so that Weiss and the gang can pursure their plan of rebellion gainst Shinra:
Unlike many soldiers Sonon has proved to be an extremely strong and capable fighter standing up to Nero.
He has the right motivation as he seeks revenge against Shinra - especially Scarlet - for the death of his younger sister, which Shelke could further manipulate.
Unlike any other Deepground candidate, he has no working restriction chip implanted.
Sure, one could argue that Nero severely wounded him, but the game clearly reminded us before the battle that Nero can easily disintegrate the bodies of his victims, while he reserves a different treatment to this particoular character. And, by the way, this wouldn't even be the first time a Tsviet pretends to kill someone as Shelke did the same with the Tsviet-candidate. As far as I know the main DoC game never explained how the Tsviets overpowered the remaining Restrictors, who replaced the Tsviet-candidate or what happened to Argento - who isn't part of the DoC cast. Sonon might be the missing piece of this sub-plot that may lead to new secondary arcs that could tie a bit more Deepground to the main FFVII story.

For the censorship theme, I wanna talk about the film Anders als die Andern (Different from the Others), released in Germany in 1919. TW suicide, holocaust mention, antisemitism mention, homophobia, nazi mention
It was the first movie to address the social and legal difficulties faced by homosexuals (and portrayed this as a bad thing). It's about a violinist, Paul Körner, who falls in love with his male student. He is eventually blackmailed for this and, although the blackmailer gets jailed, the violinist also gets a nominal sentence for it and loses his musical career because of it, leading him to commit suicide. It was essentially a condemnation of Paragraph 175 (the law that criminalised homosexuality in Germany, the same one the Nazis used to put gay men in concentration camps and that wasn't repealed until 1994), saying that homosexuality wasn't a crime or even an illness, just a different way of being, and that rather than prevent the "crime" of homosexuality, it in fact encouraged the crime of extortion/blackmail. As you might expect, Magnus Hirschfeld was heavily involved and even has a cameo in the film, as a doctor explaining homosexuality and the injustice of the law to the audience. Below are some screenshots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(full film linked above, I seem to remember seeing at some point that it's technically not the *full* film since it was obviously censored/destroyed during the Nazi period so it's possible that some of the original scenes have been cut. But the above video has most of it I guess? With title cards in English, since it's a silent movie. Also subtitles in Russian for some reason)
The film was a box office success when it premiered but was quickly overshadowed by organised protests by conservative Catholic and Protestant as well as right-wing anti-Semitic groups. Even though the Weimar Republic (the German governmental system from 1918-1933) was relatively progressive and permissive when it came to homosexuality (hence Hirschfeld’s Sexological Institute being allowed to exist, hence the thriving queer culture in the form of bars, clubs, magazines in Berlin and elsewhere in Germany), eventually the film was banned from public screening because it apparently "only showed one side of the debate about paragraph 175" and "might confuse underage viewers about the phenomenon of homosexuality and be used as a recruitment tool" 🙄 From then on it could only be shown at Hirschfeld’s institute for educational purposes and special events.
However, despite facing the scrutiny of the censors, during the Weimar era there were a remarkable number of films released with queer/homosexual themes, even more about crossdressing. According to Robert Beachy in Gay Berlin (where I got most of this information from): "the freedom in the 1920s to depict realistic homosexual or lesbian characters, and their relationships, was all but unique to Germany."
I find this era and the art from this era so interesting because it was a time when there was relative freedom to express and explore queer sexuality, there was a concerted scientific and political movement to decriminalise (and to a certain extent depathologise) homosexuality but that still existed within the bounds of censorship and alongside the growing far right movement in Germany at the time. It's also important to note, I think, that persecution and protests of Hirschfeld and his research, while obviously stemming from queerphobia, also stemmed from antisemitism because Hirschfeld was Jewish.
If anyone wants to learn more about this era btw, I can't recommend Gay Berlin by Robert Beachy enough. It was the first book I read about queer culture/politics/science in this era and it got me interested enough in Weimar Berlin's queer history that I've now written two dissertations on the subject!

🏳️‍🌈 Rec post!! A queer film + a queer TV series from Hong Kong ~
Tumblr media
1) Twilight’s Kiss (叔·叔) (Dir. Ray Yeung 楊曜愷; 2019)
youtube
Twilight’s Kiss offers a very realistic depiction of two elderly, in-the-closet gays in Hong Kong, who have dedicated their lives building a conventional family before unexpectedly falling in love with each other. It is a quiet film, and the romance is told in the same subtle manner as love is expressed (and not expressed) in their generation. The actors were phenomenal at playing regular Hong Kong men of their age (Pak mentioned he “came to Hong Kong”, ie, he was a refugee from Mao’s China, as the vast majority of his demographics was), which added to the resonance of the story ~ they could’ve been anyone, and anyone could’ve been them.
The director of the film, Ray Yeung, is an openly gay man.
(Long review: Hollywood Reporter) Streaming link to film (with English subtitles; pls ignore and close the pop-up window)
2) Ossan’s Love (大叔的愛) (2021)
Tumblr media
The unlikely (and hilarious) love triangle between Muk (Left), Tin (Center) and KK (Right) in Ossan’s Love.
For those who found the name familiar, it’s because the series is a (faithful) remake of the popular 2018 Japanese series of the same name. The Hong Kong version is longer (15 episodes; ~ 40 min each) compared to the Japanese original, and its mood is cheerier, sweeter, and also ... more BL, with the lead characters Tin (Haruta in the original) and Muk (Maki in the original) played by two idols, Edan Lui 呂爵安 and Anson Lo 盧瀚霆, from the very popular local boy band MIRROR.
(Being idols didn’t prevent them from kissing. Not in Hong Kong, 2021.) (Yes, they kissed, and hugged and fought and bantered...)
Ossan’s Love is culturally significant in that it became the first gay drama to be aired primetime in Hong Kong, and by extension, in China. Beloved by the locals, it was also very much discussed—hk-queers expressed their (surprised) joy that finally, they got to see a respectful, dignified presentation of who they are and how they love. More importantly, they got to see HKers, older generations included, glued to the TV for their kind of love story, rooting for the lead male characters to get together.
This signifies a broader acceptance of LGBT+ in the city than previously assumed; this is very important and comforting to the community in June, 2021, when the future of LGBT+ rights in the city is very uncertain. After the 2019 protests, pro-democracy leaders have been arrested and jailed in large numbers; newspaper that advocated for freedom has been shut down. Meanwhile, during the airing of Ossan’s Love , the (in)famous pro-Beijing politician, Junius Ho, claimed the series to have violated the city’s much feared, much abused National Security Law—the law that officially aims to catch “traitors”, but has been used as a “catch-all” excuse to arrest political dissidents and suppress the freedoms of the city. Ho was of sufficient prominence that his words could draw the attention of officials who have been sent from across the mainland-HK border to do Beijing’s bidding.
Also, Ossan’s Love was produced not by the powerful, once popular TVB (local TV station), which, with Chinese investors becoming its major shareholders like many other HK press and media companies, has become very pro-Beijing and conservative. The series was produced by ViuTV, a much smaller station preferred by young, pro-democracy Hong Kongers ... which means the future of the series, of its stars (MIRROR’s members are once-contestants of a ViuTV talent show), of even the station itself is also uncertain.
Hence, I’m recommending Ossan’s Love now ... even if the official version doesn’t have the best English subtitles. The full series is on Youtube (links below); the soundtrack is in Cantonese and (Traditional) Chinese subtitles are available, but English is only available via Youtube’s built-in Auto-Translate function.
For those who would like to catch a short scene of two cute HK boys in love, the last 5 minutes of Ep 11 would be a nice place to watch. You can see how comfortable these two bandmates were with each other—Edan (Tin) had played two supporting roles before this series, while Anson (Muk) had never acted before. Edan and Anson have claimed that being close friends in RL meant their intimate scenes were easy to film (BTW, Anson is gay, Edan isn’t).
Tumblr media
Edan Lui (Left) & Anson Lo (Right), Harper's Bazaar HK, May 2021. Edan was a uni student before joining hk-ent. Anson was a dance instructor.
(You can also see why, when I watched the Gg + Dd Happy Camp episode very, very early on in my turtlehood, I assumed Gg and Dd would have ample opportunities to work together again, to play and be happy in front of the camera ... just like how I remembered on-screen couples from my days in HK—the couples, the CPs of the time, would collaborate repeatedly after having demonstrated chemistry and become commercial success—in film and TV projects, in variety shows, in awards ceremonies as presenting guests etc etc. This multi-project collaboration was, and still is, viewed as a Very Good Thing, and not only for commercial reasons. The inter-personal fate (緣份) to play on-screen couples repeatedly, per the tradition of HK-ent, is something of a blessing, talked about as a small-scale version of having the destiny, the luck to be together across multiple lives, multiple incarnations. Actors treasure this kind of collaboration and the HK audience celebrates it, regardless of the marital status of the actors in RL. Entertainment news dedicate articles about it.) (There’s actually an example of that in Ossan’s Love: Kenny Wong 黃德斌, the actor who played the titular Ossan, KK, and Rachel Kan 簡慕華, who played his wife Francesca, had already played husband and wife three times before. Rachel had retired from acting in 2017 and moved to Canada; she told reporters that she returned to shoot Ossan’s Love primarily so that she could play Kenny’s wife again).
* Below is a small warning for Ossan’s Love ~ *
The humour of Ossan’s Love is often wild and zany, especially where it adapts from the Japanese original. Some of it, i-fandomers may find uncomfortable. Notably, the titular Ossan (Japanese, meaning “Older Man”) was Tin and Muk’s boss; and he and Darren, another superior of Tin and Muk, were also part of the romantic story line.
One can argue, therefore, that Ossan’s Love contains a *very* “Me Too” situation; however, this is also why I find Ossan’s Love interesting beyond being a Chinese-speaking gay drama—it is clear that the production team of this series meant no disrespect, and from the series’ reception, it’s also clear that hk-queers and other more progressive members among the audience didn’t see disrespect in the product. This series therefore offers a glimpse to the answers of some questions I’ve had: how does Hong Kong of 2021 translate respect for queers (as well as for older men and women) into day-to-day words and actions? How do these culturally-specific habits in speech and behaviour compare to the norms in, for example, the United States (that I’m familiar with)?
“Political incorrectness” was also found in some of Tin’s internal monologue. However, I thought, perhaps, that was why the series has proven to be disarming to the general audience both in HK and Japan, places with a tradition of homophobia stemming often not from malice, but from ignorance, from sex being considered taboo for so much of the places’ history. Tin, as someone who haven’t seemed to have spared a thought about homosexuality before the story had taken place, spoke the minds of the audiences who aren’t familiar with homosexuality. Muk, meanwhile, presented the perspective of someone who already understood what being gay was and wasn’t about. Tin, therefore, led the audience towards Muk and his views step by step, all the while without being judgemental—how could he be? He was one of them too during his journey. He was the student, and he was also the protagonist who everyone—and I mean everyone—loved (in a rather funny manner :D). 🌈

My Nitpick Issue with Sherlock in Moriarty the Patriot
Tumblr media
By: Peggy Sue Wood | @pswediting
It may surprise some of you to know that I have degrees in book reading and writing. While earning those degrees I studied one specific time period more than the others--that being British Literature from late-17th/18th century through the early 20th century. This is to say that it is a time period I know a little more about than you might think. And early 1900s is probably my favorite period out of that timeline, particularly England under Victoria’s rule.
And, perhaps, because of this strange obsession I have with the period, I presently have a small bone to pick over Moriarty the Patriot.
It’s not the minor inaccuracies of the clothes, nor the adaptation of character designs. It’s not even the adjustment to social tendencies depicted that are more Japanese than British-English of any period thus far either--because those kinds of things happen frequently in adaptations. And it's not Moriarty or his backstory too! Because, again, this is an adaptation, and liberties will be taken to fit the new story (besides, even in the original works by Doyle the man’s backstory was inconsistent).
My issue is with the character of Sherlock and his supposed “deductions.” Well, maybe more accurately it's with the writing of Sherlock.
You see, Sherlock is almost always introduced the same way in an adaptation. He makes a judgment about someone (usually about Watson or the Watson stand-in) and then proves it using his observational skills. This introduction is important because it clarifies that the world of the characters is one based on where common sense and science not only work but make sense. His deductions are logical and based on some semblance of rationality. Here is an excerpt from the original novel:
“I knew you came from Afghanistan. From long habit the train of thoughts ran so swiftly through my mind, that I arrived at the conclusion without being conscious of intermediate steps. There were such steps, however. The train of reasoning ran, `Here is a gentleman of a medical type, but with the air of a military man. Clearly an army doctor, then. He has just come from the tropics, for his face is dark, and that is not the natural tint of his skin, for his wrists are fair. He has undergone hardship and sickness, as his haggard face says clearly. His left arm has been injured. He holds it in a stiff and unnatural manner. Where in the tropics could an English army doctor have seen much hardship and got his arm wounded? Clearly in Afghanistan.'
How does this prove we are in a world where common sense and logic works? Well, because he didn’t pull any of these deductions from thin air. He just used his eyes and common knowledge to make a quick judgment.
In the example above, everything that Sherlock assumes is true and based on reasonable assumptions about the time period and about what he can observe of the person before him.
The tan of Watson’s skin is something he notes because London is usually dark and wet around this season, so you’re unlikely to get a tan. The way the man walks and stands is also a thing he can observe, and fresh military men walk very differently from the average citizen or gentleman. These two observations, coupled with noticeable injury and limp could lead one to think that maybe he has just come back from the current war (the First Anglo-Afghan War). Of course, maybe he wasn’t injured in the war at all--maybe something else happened; however, you can make a pretty good guess that an abled bodied soldier would not be home and looking for a room in the middle of war-times if something hadn’t happened to him on the battlefield.
My point is that all of Sherlock’s deductions come from observing details, paying attention to the basics of the world (such as the ongoing war or understanding rigor mortis), and using your senses. Sure, there may be a few things the average person doesn’t know that Sherlock does, but that’s because Sherlock has studied different things and to a more serious degree. The level of understanding is different, but not impossible to achieve in one’s own time or effort. And, as another note, Sherlock is not perfectly observant all of the time. There are plenty of examples of him needing to take breaks, of him closing his eyes to block out distractions so he can better focus on what someone is saying, and of him smoking to zone out for a bit so that he can come back to a problem with fresh eyes at a later time.
It’s absolutely vital to Sherlock’s character, and the original story, that all of the deductions are based on the “possible,” which is why the introduction of Sherlock in Episode 6 of this adaptation immediately irritated me. Here is the scene:
Tumblr media
Side note:  I’m sorry it’s shown as a poorly made gif--I literally could not find a copy of the clip with English subtitles on YouTube so I could not include it as a video. If you want to look at it in the episode itself, it starts at about the 13:00 minute mark. EPISODE LINK)
Here is what bothers me so much. Why would a mathematician be checking to see if the staircase on a ship fits the golden ratio? More importantly, why would that in any way matter to Moriarty as a character? Based on what we’ve seen so far of this character, and we’ve had 6 and 1/2 episodes to define him so far, none of Sherlock’s statement makes sense here.
Like, at all. (And I know that this also happens in the manga--doesn’t make sense there either.)
You know what would make sense though? For the time period and the character development we’ve seen of Moriarty thus far? A pause to consider-- and maybe even compare--staircases on the ship between the main steps for passengers and the steps for commoners or staff.
Why would that make sense? Oh, thank you so much for asking. Time to get real nerdy here for a minute:
Class issues were a serious problem in Victorian England (as they are now, though in a different way). These issues were not necessarily the same as depicted in the show but it was still consistently present throughout the society as a whole. (A good, short read on the subject can be found here for those of you interested: Social Life in Victorian England.)
One way that this issue came out was in the very architecture of homes. In Victorian England, nobleman homes and estates were built with main staircases, where the residents and guests walked, and servent staircases, where the staff and other temporary employees walked. The difference in these stairs was huge, as the servant staircases were basically death traps.
In the late 1800s, a mathematician (and architect) named Peter Nickolson figured out the exact measurements that would generally ensure a comfortable and easy walk upstairs:
Tumblr media
BTW: Here is a great video on the subject and how they were death traps: Staircases in Victorian England
However, Nickolson’s math and designs were not used regularly in the design of houses for years to come.
By the setting of the story, and given Moriarty’s interest in maths, his understanding of class issues, and beyond--this kind of knowledge would make far more sense than searching for the golden ratio in a man-made set of stairs.
Moreover, the golden ratio is generally interesting to mathematicians (to my understanding) because it can be seen in nature frequently. It is a pattern found everywhere, from the way that petals grow on flowers, to how seashells form, to freaking hurricane formations! So why on Earth would Moriarty be interested in an architect's choice to use such a ration when planning a staircase?
He wouldn’t, I believe. Nor would Sherlock generally be able to make that assumption based on his time gazing at the staircase, distance from said staircase, nor angle.
So what can he deduce, if not that? Well, he may be able to deduce that Moriarty is a nobleman based on his attire. He may also be able to deduce that the man is a student based on age, as in an earlier episode we were told he’s quite young to be teaching in university and appears close in age to his students. Maybe he’s a student of architecture? But, if he’s a nobleman--as we suspect he is based on his attire--then it's unlikely he works a labor-intensive job or one close to it. So, he must be in academia for academic reasons such as mathematics. Physics during that time, as an academic subject, focused more on lighting, heat, electricity, magnetism, and such. And, Sherlock notes that Moriarty is specifically looking at the stairs, not the lights of the ship.
So, BAM! I’ve deduced Moriarty is a young nobleman who is likely a student of mathematics. Perhaps he’s recently had a lesson on staircases or another algebraic concept that’s caused him to pause with momentary interest.
It makes a heck of a lot more sense than finding a “golden ratio” in a man-planned and man-made staircase... don’t you think? And, maybe, we can even deduce that rather than a student he’s a professor who has just thought up an interesting lesson--though that would be a BIG jump from the data we’ve been provided here.
Deductions that come from major leaps in logic make it seem like Sherlock is doing magic... and he is--because it is magical that people find it impressive or believable. It’s not. And I would argue that the original character would find it insulting based on his comments to Watson regarding being compared to other fictional detectives.
Pay in mind, I have this feeling about several adaptations, so my judgment on Moriarty the Patriot isn’t technically exclusive. It just hit me so hard in my first viewing that I felt I needed to share because generally, this issue of deductions becoming magic rather than stemming from logic doesn’t happen in the first two minutes of meeting Sherlock Holmes.
So... yeah. Thanks for coming to my absurd history/lit lesson through Moriarty the Patriot. I appreciate you sticking with me to the end and hope it was enjoyable.
You can watch the series on Funimation.com right now at: https://www.funimation.com/shows/moriarty-the-patriot
Overall, it’s a pretty good series; although there was a lot more child-murder than I expected...

Korean Frankenstein musical: every subtitled song I could find
Because not many English-speaking people share my madness, my obsession for countless days whose name is Frankenstein musical or 프랑켄슈타인 뮤지컬 to be correct, I have decided to make yet another post about this Frankenstein adaptation.
After my boring and long review from last week, I said to myself: what if I try to find more subtitled songs from this? There isn’t much musical content apart from press conference recordings (and I can’t find bootlegs either) and even though not many people know about this show, there are some subbed vids! So thank you, sweet people from the internet, for putting subtitles on these clips, I can at least understand what’s going on in them.
(For further context of these songs, plot or whatever else go read my older post, I don’t know how to put a link of post here, I posted it not so long ago :) )
The Only Future
youtube
Victor tries to convince Henry to make a better race of humans with him, Henry doesn’t want to play God at first, later agrees. And an epic singing happens.
This song is very good. I seriously want their voices, acting skills and everything. And Victor’s statement about God is interesting. I mean, from a theological POV you are not correct, but you got the spirit. It’s a great song, Henry/Victor song, epic start to this play, what else do we need.
In Your Dream
youtube
I’m not gonna lie. I cry everytime.
This is a song from almost end of Act 1, however, I find it the most emotional in a terms of love from the whole play. Henry loves Victor so much that he sacrifices himself, falsely confesses of a murder that was a Victor’s crime, and dies so Victor can live and continue his experiment. They two are as close as they can be, yet Vic is dumb and Henry voluntarily takes the blame.
And the later part of this song is a heaven. Just listen to this song, even if you don’t care and just pass by, go watch it.
The Great History of The Creation of Life Begins
youtube
First of all, the title lenght. Second of all, this is as good as Birth to my Creation. But more twisted and Victor wants to fist-fight with the God. And "God bless me or rather hurl down your curse," sentence is so good.
For a bit of context, Victor reanimates the creature and uses Henry’s head to finish the creature. The thing Víc is holding in the beginning is Henry’s head. He just sews it to a rest of a body. Are you sane Victor? I knew you are capable of a lot of dumb stuff, but now you crossed a line...
The previous three songs + Monologue + Troubled Friend
youtube
There are previous three songs in this video plus another two. I just had to put those three songs before, because they have better translation and that previous version of In Your Dream is my favourite.
So we get a Monologue. It’s fine, it’s a love ballad, something like a Once Upon a Dream from J&H musical, however, they went Frankenstein: a new musical road, so it’s a Victor’s cousin singing a lovesong about him :-| ...
But Troubled Friend, DEAR MY! It’s like the tavern scene from the Frankenstein ballet but this time Victor and Henry are taking all the spotlight, and are the stars of that evening. Seriously, I didn’t know and I didn’t even think that Henry and Victor have THAT level dance moves. They are drunk, but hey! Go listen to it, they make me happy, Victor and Henry are happy.
But somebody tell Henry he shouldn’t joke about death like that. Little does he know, he will die in like next two songs.
The World of Men
youtube
Second Act starts and things start to go very far from the original source material. The Creature escapes Vic (who wants to kill him, btw) and finds himself lost. His strenght is noticed by an Eva, owner of a fighting arena and Creature voluntarily/involuntarily ends up as one of the gladiators.
I thought only Linda Eder can sing "bad wh*re" songs the best, this singer is very good too, I want her talent, I am jealous.
You Are a Monster
youtube
I don’t know if to like Jacques or utterly despise him.
Jacques, a husband of Eva, makes a deal with one of arena investors: if the Creature wins a fight against the investor’s fighter, the investor will forget their debt. And Jacques does not prepare the Creature, or does nothing, he simply slaps Creature and hits him with his cane a several times while making fun of him. That’s not how encouragement works...
In case you don’t know, this musical has double-roles. There are 22 characters in this musical and they are played by only 11 actors. The actors of characters from the first act are now another ones with a nice sybolics. The characters who abuse the Creature are later the characters whom Creature kills. Henry’s actor plays Creature, Victor’s one plays Jacques and later he plays Victor again, and so on. And I love double-cated musicals, look a Hamilton for example.
But the way Jacques says: "Victor Frankenstein’s experiment log," is so funny to me for some reason.
—————
That was all from subtitled songs, I shall continue more about other things.
Another thing I learned, is that this musical is the most popular original Korean musical (so like an original thing, no Broadway production, no West-End, no Wildhorn) and it had very good revenue as well (and although the first production premiered in like 2013 it has it’s fandom to this day), but the most shocking thing for me is that they are planning to go on a Broadway with it!
However, I feel like this performance won’t appeal to western audiences as much as to Korean one. I have a bad gut feeling, that this will either be a total disaster (monsters tend to not do very well on Broadway, see Dracula, Lestat, or even Frankenstein: a new musical) or it will pleasantly surprise us. Either way, I hope they won’t change the story and songs too much because this musical has it’s original charm like no other musical produced in West. It sounds more magical, emotional, foreign-like. I hope it will have it’s essense even on Broadway.
See, even though I sometimes feel like this musical was made by a Wildhorn fan who wanted to do their own Jekyll & Hyde musical but with Frankenstein, it’s kinda a good thing. If we forget Wildhorn-ish love ballads and Wildhorn J&H tropes here and there, we get a brilliant play with a great soundtrack. I mean, The Great History of a Creation of Life Begins, In your dream, I’m a Monster are so good! The chills every time...
I felt inspired by @dragonheadskilax ’es post about obscure Frankenstein adaptations and decided to make a post about another one myself. His posts about those adaptations made me curious, and I searched on my own as well. Which resulted in finding of this musical. So thank you if you are reading this :)
Okay, I think this post is way too long. If you want to know more about this musical, I made it’s small review with a plot summary before, you can check it out on my blog.
That’s all about this musical for today. See you :)
