I only knew four other people who had read or seen Scott Pilgrim and consequently I missed that apparently this film--featuring a thoroughly whatever dude ending up with, let's be honest with ourselves, a bog standard "scene" girl--somehow has caused unimaginable human suffering

I swear there is nothing more insane to me than watching the n*tflix adaptation of Archive81 after listening to the original podcast and then seeing people not hating the show, it gives me such intense whiplash

So Claude has thick hair, yeah ? And on some mornings, it just doesn’t want to cooperate, it won’t slick back in a natural way, looks too frizzy, looks too flat, there’s just something wrong with it.
15 minutes of struggling against his hair, then he looks over to Dimitri who just rolled out of bed, tied his hair however without even looking at himself in the mirror, and has the audacity to look like he just got personally tended to by the best hairdressers of the continent. Claude’s bow arm twitches a little.

Yeeeah it is way scarier if the vampire can eat anyone. Can you imagine Dracula but when Jonathan cuts himself Dracula goes ":/ not a girl" or the first mate goes "good thing vampirism is no threat to me or I'd need to jump" or Dracula trying to eat Mina and going "curses, foiled by matrimony". Then the threat is that no one is safe from the vampire, not just Girl Virginity.
Yes, exactly. When the human heroes go on a dumbass expedition to the crypt in the middle of the night I need to be at least a little bit worried that the vampire might Fucking Get Them or what's the point??
Also, vampires only being a threat to Girl Virginity is creepy in a bad way and the subtext implied by it is definitely not something I'm keen to preserve from the original text.

am i watching the winter embrace on repeat and staring at joels hand so gently on her cheek as she looks up at him in such an unbelieving manner because he shouldn’t be there because he’s half dead in that basement except he is there and he’s holding her and his touch is soft and comforting and protective and gentle and it brings her back to the present and helps her realize that she’s safe now because he’s here bur also that he is alive and here with her and she doesn’t have to worry about her worst fear coming true anymore because she can feel his hand on her cheek and his arms wrapped around her and hear the sound of his voice and see the alive look in his eyes? yeah.

the essays i could write about how pete has always pushed the envelope of gender presentation with regards to his fashion sense and how that gets ignored or swept under the rug or mocked because people think his fashion sense is ugly or cringe… like regardless of how you feel about his aesthetic you have to admit that out of his peers he has almost always been most often playing in the intersection between fashion and traditional gender presentation. the skirts aren’t new. even the eyeliner and (women’s) skinny jeans existed as a similar symbol back in the day
